There's a popular tweet going around that's like "If you say your favorite anime is [string of Japanese words] and I find out that's just [English name of very generic popular anime] I'm shoving you into a locker"
And I take issue with that! Actually! Because it overlooks the context where some new anime starts airing--sub-only, referred to by its Japanese name only--which you and a micro-niche of like 4 of your mutuals decide to watch. And the only name it's ever called is the Japanese name, because there's no English speaking audience beside you and 4 weirdos reblogging gifsets from each other.
And then, months or years later, it blows up. Season 2 hits it big or some youtube personality does a waifu ranking of it and now Hot Topic is shilling its merch and Cosplay Tiktok is calling out some 14-year-old for race-faking and now someone asks you "hey what anime are you enjoying right now?" and you're like "oh I like [Japanese name]" and they have the audacity to go "scoff, you mean [English name]?"
Buddy! I was here first!! I've already established my tumblr tag for this!! Now I have to change in order to not be pretentious!? Because your favorite 16-million follower minecraft youtuber is wearing a skin from it now!!? This sucks. Put the minecraft youtuber back

on the point of including black people in the show (or any period show), a lot of the outrage can sometimes come across as performative to me. it's one thing to feel upset about how little screentime black characters get compared to white characters (a valid criticism, believe me, I Know! give me an hour and i could talk your ear off about how this constantly annoys me as a black person who's damned to enjoy period pieces), but it's another to Only get upset while not actually creating content for said black characters, Especially when fandom (not just hbo war, but in general) is famous for taking Extremely minor characters and creating entire worlds with them, to the point where you wouldn't know they're minor characters at all until you check out the source yourself. richard macon, alexander jefferson, and robert daniels each have only 20 or less posts about them (at the time of publishing this post). in my own fandom experience (within fandoms both big and small and old and new, whatever), i've seen more content (posts, art pieces, analyses, fics, etc) made for minor white characters in less than a mere week's time (it's not a competiton lol i'm just giving a perspective here). so idk. obviously, there's nothing anyone here can do about a show that's already been filmed and released. we got what we got. thas it. at least in the great wide world of fandom, you can actually do something about it, turning the big into small. there's precedent for that. otherwise it just feels like complaining for the sake of complaining

Ahh I have found quite the relic at my local antiques store! The "fotonovel" of Amok Time!
Before the internet and streaming services/the ability to take screenshots, it seems these were the way to see stills of any of the episodes! Or even the way to "watch" any episodes, since the television schedule was set and even vhs/dvds weren't a thing yet so you couldnt watch whenever you want.
The access and manuverability we have with the media we consume now has made these comic-style versions look very... antiquated? nowadays (at least to me!)
(I had another picture but I was shaking with excitement and it was too blurred!)
