[ PART OF MY JUNGKOOK BIRTHDAY DRABBLE GAME ]
“We’ve made a terrible mistake,” you complained, sinking down on a park bench to rest your chin in one hand.
Coming to a stop, Gina craned her neck to peer over her shoulder. “I agree,” she said. “We should’ve stopped and gotten donuts at that shop I pointed out.”
“Gina.” You looked up. “Read the room, alright?”
“Right, sorry.”
She grinned, plopping down on the park bench beside you. Adjusting her green and white striped shorts, Gina lifted a hand to scan the horizon. A few children played on the slide at the playground, their innocent cackles drifting over the hedges.
Utterly exhausted, you sighed. “We should give up.”
“No!” Gina turned to face you, appalled. “We’re not stopping until we’ve combed every newsstand in the city. Until we’ve harassed every bodega owner! Until our names are plastered under persona non grata in every library!”
Normally, Gina’s speeches were enough for you to crack a smile, but not today. Today was the day Jungkook’s big magazine article was released and you had woefully dropped the ball. To be fair, Seokjin had suggested you order the volume ahead of time, since the People’s Sexiest Men issue tended to sell out, but you completely forgot.
Jungkook had stayed on campus through Senior year, but then had immediately entered the NHL. This was his second full season with the team and already, he was garnering national attention. Much of this was due to a viral clip of your boyfriend removing his jersey at the end of game five of the western conference finals, but said clip wouldn’t have gone viral if Jungkook had been on the bench.
The fact that he got playing time in his first season was remarkable – let alone that he was playing in the semis and was now considered the league’s It boy. Already there were rumors of him being nominated for end of year awards. Jungkook was excited about those, of course, but you and your friends were more excited for this. People’s Sexiest Men Alive.
He wasn’t the cover, of course – that was reserved for A list celebrities – but it seemed Jungkook’s abs had been enough to land him a mention. You’d planned on wallpapering the apartment door with the photo before he got home tomorrow, but that wouldn’t happen if you couldn’t get your hands on a copy.
Unfortunately for you, the issue seemed to be sold out.
Sighing again, you folded your arms over your chest. “Has Seokjin said anything to you?” you asked Gina. “Was he able to find one?”
“How should I know?” she said, somewhat defensive. “It’s not like I know everything Seokjin does or says.”
You stared at her for a moment, unsure how to respond. “Uh – I know?”
“Right.” Gina swallowed, somewhat mollified. “Why don’t we call him?”
Shaking your head at her weirdness, you pulled your phone from your pocket. Honestly, Gina and Seokjin had been acting mad weird lately. They acted all cagey and awkward whenever you asked one about the other. If you didn’t know better, you’d almost think they were fighting.
Dialing Seokjin’s number, you leaned back on the bench and listened to his ringback tone. Kim Seokjin was one of the only people you knew – well, him and your aunt – who still had that feature, and Seokjin hadn’t bothered to update his since 2011. It was still Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen.
HEY, I JUST MET YOU! AND THIS IS CRAZ –
“Hello?”
“Seokjin,” you groaned. “When are you going to change that dumb ringback tone?”
“Whenever Carly Rae goes out of style, so never.”
Gina, having overheard, cracked up beside you.
“Anyways,” you said, switching to your other ear. “Any luck on the search?”
“Sorry, but nope. Seems your boyfriend is more in demand than that one donut shop Gina always wants to go to.”
“That, or it’s the fact that Michael B. Jordan’s on the cover.”
“Yeah, probably that.”
“Alright,” you sighed, picking a thread on your jeans. “Thanks for trying, Seokjin.”
“Anytime,” he said and hung up.
As you shoved your phone in your purse, Gina looked at you warily. “No luck?”
“Nope.”
“Hm.” Gina leaned back on the bench. “Maybe we should switch gears here, get creative. We could cut out semi-nude photos of Jungkook and stick them to the pages of last year’s edition!”
“Where would I get last year’s issue, though?”
“Good point.” Gina thought. “You could just stick semi-nude photos of Jungkook to your front door?”
“Gina,” you laughed, shoving her shoulder. “Stop stripping my boyfriend!”
“There it is!” Gina beamed. “I knew I could get you to laugh.”
Shaking your head, your smile faded a little. Gina was right though, this was silly. It would’ve been fun for Jungkook to come home from his away game to this, but it was hardly the end of the world. You would just order a copy online and wait.
Heaving a great sigh, you stood from the bench. “Okay,” you said, turning to Gina. “Let’s head out.”
Gina convinced you to go to the donut shop at least, so you didn’t arrive home empty-handed. That was the reason she gave you at least, although you knew it had more to do with her recently launched donut Instagram.
The box was precariously perched on your hip as you shoved open the door, placing the keys on the hook to kick the door shut. As you turned to walk inside, you started – nearly dropping the entire box of donuts on the floor.
“Jungkook?” you gasped.
Chucking the box on the counter, you dashed across the room.
Jungkook laughed when you reached him, immediately jumping to wrap your legs around his waist. He caught you easily, warm hands on your waist as you buried your face in his chest. Somewhat awkwardly, he walked you towards the kitchen.
“You’re back!” you blurted, pulling back to see him.
Jungkook grinned, rosy-cheeked from your touch. “I’m back,” he agreed, depositing you on the kitchen counter. “Miss me?”
“How?” you demanded, poking his chest. “How’d you get home so fast?”
“I feel so welcome,” Jungkook teased. At the look on your face, he grinned. “Coach cancelled tomorrow’s practice, so I caught a flight back today.”
“Yay,” you said happily, leaning to rest your head on his chest.
The steady thrum of his heartbeat reassured you and for a moment, you allowed yourself to enjoy this. Jungkook smelled as he always did, like light floral and cotton, and the weight of his hands on your thighs made your heart calm.
His thumbs played with the thread on your jeans, which sent your mind to other places – places involving your bed, his ass and zero clothes – but for now, you were content with this.
“What’s in the box?” he murmured into your hair.
“Oh, right,” you said and pulled back. Twisting around, you dragged the donut box towards you and popped the top. “Some might be a bit squished since I threw them. Gina and I went to the new donut place on Lakeview.”
Jungkook’s eyes went super-wide. He immediately bent to grab the closest donut, powdered sugar getting everywhere when he bit into the side.
“Yum.” Jungkook’s eyes rolled exaggeratedly back in his head. “Wow, this is the best welcome home I’ve ever gotten. There’s you, of course, but also – donuts.”
“Obviously,” you said. “There was actually supposed to be another surprise, but I kind of messed it up.”
Jungkook licked powdered sugar off his wrist. “Messed something up? You? Don’t buy it.”
“Suck up,” you teased. “But no, really. I wanted to get your People’s Sexiest Men edition! I was going to plaster it across the front door and embarrass you.”
Jungkook grimaced. “As fun as that sounds, the donuts are better.”
“What? You aren’t proud of how sexy you are?”
“I don’t care about that.” Jungkook swallowed the last of the donut. “As long as you find me sexy.”
Tipping your head back, you groaned. “Okay, now you’re seriously sucking up.”
“Mm.” Placing his hands on either side of your thighs, Jungkook’s nose grazed your jawline. “Anything else you want me to suck?”
“Jungkook!”
Drawing back, his gaze glinted darkly. “Besides, why do you need that photo of me with my shirt off?”
You frowned, perturbed and he reached one hand overhead. Still looking at you, Jungkook did that stupid-hot thing guys do where they remove their shirt with one hand. When his six pack abs were revealed, they left you a bit speechless.
Flexing a little, Jungkook grinned. “You have the real thing.”
“Shut up,” you groaned, shoving his pec. Oh – hard. Sliding down from the counter, you began walking towards the bedroom. “But since you offered…”
Jungkook waggled his brows. “I did.”
“Get in there, sexiest man alive,” you laughed. “Show me what you got.”
“Alright.” Jungkook caught himself on the doorframe with both hands. “But before we go any further, I feel compelled to clarify I’m not People’s sexiest man, just one of them. Michael B. Jordan is the sexiest man alive.”
“Jungkook!” You pointed through the door. “Bed!”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said with a salute.
You stared after him, grinning stupidly before following.

I've been really into graphic design lately and I want to start! do you have any tips?
Hey, thanks for asking, I guess I do have some tips
• For absolute beginners I'd recommend first looking into graphic programs and finding the best fit for what you want to create - the adobe cloud is great but to start out there are many free alternatives. If you're into drawing as well I'd recommend checking out Procreate.
• Study the basics - e.g. look at the difference between vectors and pixel graphics, file formats (jpg vs png vs tiff etc.), look up different methods to cut out images as it's something you'll probably need at some point, and maybe also have a look at recent design or color trends (that's always fun, too). Also advisable as a beginner is to study general do's and don'ts (for example working with text, website design or layouting have some clear rules for what works and what doesn't - most people already have a sense of aesthetic but it's always a good idea to prevent creating some graphic design is my passion meme stuff, see r/crappydesign or the likes).
• If you want to create with the intention of publishing your works effectively on certain platforms (like Instagram) it's always clever to look up which formats work best (1080x1080 is standard square for Instagram for example). If you want to create wallpapers look up common sizes and set up your canvas accordingly.
• Find inspiration and ideas - of course you need at least a rough idea about what you want to create. I for example love all things 80s, so for inspiration I look up 80s media, technology, fashion etc. to find things I could incorporate in my designs (e.g. patterns, color schemes, shapes, fonts etc.). An amazing platform for this is Pinterest of course, but I also frequently use unsplash.com (free to use gorgeous photography that you can use right away for your designs), youtube (for tutorials mainly) and lots of tumblr blogs.
•  If you want to use photos make sure you know about copyright and fair use - platforms like Pinterest mostly feature copyrighted images, so never just use an image without considering this. Always ask first and give credit.
•  Watch lots of tutorials - in the beginning I had no idea about the capabilities of graphic programs and was often wondering how artists were able to create certain things. So of course you need to learn somehow and watching tutorials on youtube is a great way to do so. It’s also fun to just look through random design tutorials until the algorythm shows you something you really like and want to recreate or use for your own works. Like this I also learned lots of basics (advanced working with layers, clipping masks, transparency, layer styles, filters and all kinds of photoshop tools).
• Familiarize yourself with the graphic program of your choice. Check out which tools are available and try to use them. Experiment with shapes, brushes, text, gradients, etc. Set up your workplace according to your needs and look through all options, settings and tabs to see what your possibilities are. Play around with a photo and try to edit the hell out of it. Like this you’ll probably already find some tools or settings that inspire you and ways you might want to incorporate them into your designs.
• Recreate and adopt. Recreating artworks that inspire you or designing along tutorials is the best way to learn in my opinion, as it is with drawing as well. As you learn new techniques you can begin to incorporate more and more of them into your own artworks, your drafting process will change as you’re able to consider more ways to reach your design goal, and you will also gain lots of new inspiration as well. When I discovered the possibilities of layer mixing I began designing with them in mind and just playing around yielded some amazing results; I made note of my favourite styles and now am frequently using them in my designs.
• Draft and save inspiration. I always carry my sketchbook around and doodle things when I have a few minutes of time or when inspiration hits me. You often see things in the real world that strike you as interesting, so make sure you don’t forget about them later when you want to design. This can be posters, flyers or other design works but also nature, people, clothes, etc. Taking written notes also works great for me. For collecting inspiration online I mostly use Pinterest (create artboards for specific aesthetics and pin all images that fit and inspire you in some way so you can look them up later as reference), but I also have lots of bookmarks neatly organized to save images that aren’t on pinterest. I never just copy and save on my computer because I might not know who to credit later.
• Refine your own aesthetic, polish your artworks and take challenges. Try to design outside of your comfort zone (I’m really not a fan of working with Adobe Illustrator for example but need it a lot for my job so I decided to use it more at home for my own art and am now quite fond of some of the tools) and challenge yourself - e.g. you can try to design within a certain decade’s aesthetic, participate in online design challenges, ask for requests from friends or followers, etc. Keep up with design trends (especially if you’re planning to sell your artworks in some way at some point).
• Less is more. Edit edit edit. Something I still struggle with given that the 80s aesthetic I love always screams more is more. Train your abstraction ability (making pixel art or super minimalist things is a great way to practice). Learn what an artwork / layout / website etc. really needs and what can be scrapped. Don't be afraid of blank spaces. Never bedazzle just for the sake of filling space.
That’s all I can think of right now, hope this helps ♡ if you have questions about specific things you can always hit me up.

Your Remedy
Like clockwork he called you. Every Wednesday at 7:00, for the last four months. You stared at your phone and watched it ring. His stupid handsome face plastered across the screen. Your dumb face smiling next to his, sitting in his lap, arms wrapped around each other, blissfully happy. The 30 other selfies you’d taken together at that time now resided in a hidden folder where you’d be less likely to see them.
7:00. Every Wednesday. He knew you’d be home and settled, relaxing after a long day at work. Feet kicked up on the coffee table on your patio, glass of wine in hand. At first it took everything you had not to answer. Then it irritated you and you purposefully walked away from your phone at 6:58. For a brief period of time it made you smile. It tugged at your heart strings that he was still trying. Now it just made you feel guilty.
You were the bad guy in this scenario. You were the one breaking his heart. You were the reason he posted sunsets with sorrowful captions on Instagram. You had seen the tabloids. “Mystery woman crushes Cavill.”
Tumblr media
He even talked about you on talk shows. Instead of pushing his new show, he sulked and smiled forlornly. He never mentioned you by name. He knew his celebrity status was what was keeping you away. You had refused to be a part of the fishbowl life. You were a private person and couldn’t fathom prying eyes commenting on every aspect of your being. You didn’t feel strong enough to endure it. He didn’t fault you for it, but he knew he couldn’t protect you from it.
He told you he understood. That he’d do his best to respect your wishes. He did so by sending flowers to your office every Monday and your favorite Chinese takeout to your house every Friday. The delivery guy knew you by name, he’d sigh and shrug every time he arrived at your door.
This time he surprised you. A text followed the call. Three words. And it cut you deep.
“I miss you”
You opened the text and read it. Your heart instantly sinking into your stomach. You chugged the last of your glass of wine and went inside for more. As you opened the door to go back outside you heard your phone ping again.
“Please talk to me”
You started to type, but immediately deleted it. He must have seen the text bubbles...
“I miss us” and he sent the pic you saw every Wednesday at 7:00. You knew he had saved it as his wallpaper. But now he was reminding you of how happy the two of you had been. A tear rolled down your cheek as you tossed your phone into the chair and went inside. He was clearly on a roll, and you couldn’t mentally or emotionally handle it. You knew you’d cave. You’d call him back. He’d talk you into getting back together and saying screw everyone else.
Tumblr media
But it didn’t work. It couldn’t. Your life wasn’t in LA. It was here. Your family, your friends, your job that you had busted your ass to get. His life was in LA and London. Far from the small quiet life you had worked so hard for. You couldn’t justify flittering off and living abroad, forsaking everything you knew and loved. You were too level headed and logical for all of that. You didn’t believe in fairy tales, in happily ever afters with Prince Charmings, and you were bound and determined to keep your feet planted firmly on the ground.
You stood in your kitchen, back against the counter as you finished the bottle of wine. Another one staring at you from its rack.
“I see you damnit. It’s Wednesday. I’m not doing this.” You said defiantly to the inanimate object.
Your blood ran cold. You could hear his ringtone blasting from outside. He never called twice, but then again he didn’t usually text either.
You swallowed hard and grabbed the second bottle of wine. Swiping the corkscrew off the counter you slid down onto the floor.
You sighed heavily as you opened the bottle. The cork popping as you pulled it out. You leaned your head back against the cabinet and tried to fight the flood of emotions and memories hitting you.
The feeling of his full pouty lips on yours. His massive hands sliding around your waist. The way he’d bury his nose in your hair, breathing in the smell of your shampoo. The sweet way he’d smile at you when you’d wake up and say good morning. The safe feeling that would wash over you as he tucked you under his arm while you were cuddled up on the sofa. And the little things you didn’t even realize until now that meant so much. He’d always walk between you and the street. How he’d lead you with his hand on the small of your back. The secret grin he’d give you making you feel like you were the only two people on Earth. The way he’d kiss your forehead or gently squeeze your hand and wink.
Being in love with him made you smile like a fool. You were always giddy and excited. Nothing else mattered when you were with him. Nothing bothered you. But the rational part of your brain started chipping away at your happiness. This wouldn’t last. It was just a fling. You can’t leave your life for a guy. And your biggest fear, that he would ultimately break your heart.
You were still sitting on the floor reminiscing by the time the third bottle was empty. And you were drunk. Drunk enough you contemplated sleeping on the kitchen floor.
“Alexa! Play Adele!” You drunkenly yelled.
You were in the mood to sloppily sing sad love songs. You climbed to your feet, and fell into your feels. Eyes closed, hands in the air, you belted out Adele songs like your life depended on it. The power of the music swept you up. You clutched onto your remote like a microphone, haphazardly balancing on the sofa cushions and sang your heart out.
The doorbell ringing startled you so much it gave you the hiccups. You hopped off the sofa onto the floor and tossed the remote. You yelled at Alexa to stop as you drunkenly stumbled to the door. You tripped on the rug and face planted against the door, barely catching yourself before attempting to peer out the peep hole. A feat your eyes refused to focus on.
You regained your footing and opened the door. There he stood. All 6’1” of him. You hiccuped and tried to shut the door. You were mortified. His strong hand stopped the door from slamming in his face.
“Babe please.”
You wretched. You knew what was coming. You bolted down the hall to the bathroom. Skidding to your knees and slamming the seat up. The last thing you remembered was Henry’s hands gathering your hair away from your face.
You came to expecting to be clinging onto the toilet for dear life. Instead, you were cradled in Henry’s lap, his hand stroking your hair. You squinted as you looked up at him. He was watching tv, and flipping through channels.
“Hey there” he smiled.
“Henry.”
“Yes darling?”
“Water?”
“Of course.” He helped you off of his lap. You rushed to brush your teeth as he made his way to the kitchen to retrieve some water for you.
You had never been so grateful for his persistence as you were making your way back to the sofa. He came back into the living room with a bottle of water and a couple ibuprofen. He sat back down pulling your legs over his lap.
“Take these my love. Judging by the vineyard you projectiled, I think it’s safe to say we need to get some food in you.”
You nodded happily as you sipped the water, swallowing your pills in a poor attempt at staving off a hangover.
“Pizza?” He questioned, raising an eyebrow.
“Carmine’s?” You squeaked hopefully.
“Consider it done my love.”
You watched him as he rubbed your legs and ordered the delicious wood fire pizza.
You didn’t care about anything else right now. You didn’t even think of the dozens of reasons why he shouldn’t be here. You didn’t even worry about what happened beyond tonight. You were just grateful he was here to take care of you.
The two of you laughed and ate while watching movies. You snuggled up against him, deeply breathing in his scent as he kissed the side of your head and hugged you tight.
You sighed heavily, “I don’t deserve you. I’m so sorry. For everything. I’m horrible.”
He rest his chin against your head, “You really are.” He laughed before continuing, “...but I love you. And I understand, I do. But I need you. It’s as simple as that.”
You turned and looked at him, shifting in his lap to face him. “I’m so sorry Henry. Please forgive me. I love you. I-“
“I know my love.”
You leaned forward planting a quick kiss on his lips before ducking your head down feeling almost guilty for it.
“Hey...” he tipped your face up to meet his with his finger. “Don’t I deserve a proper kiss after everything?” He smirked.
You kept a straight face as you climbed off his lap and stood up. He furrowed his brow and gave you a confused look.
“Aren’t you coming? I owe you a proper welcome home.” A brief smile was replaced by a seductive look as you stood there waiting.
His eyes got wide as he jumped up off of the sofa, sweeping you off your feet into his arms as he carried you to bed.

Madame Leota from Haunted Mansion / cosplayer : @alia_vera
Dressing as Madame Leota was inspired by many years of visiting Disneyland with my favorite ride being the Haunted Mansion.  My family wanted to do a group costume for Halloween to participate in a local costume parade, so we chose this theme with various family members dressing as characters from the ride.  My family has always loved Halloween and that’s how I got into costuming in the first place.
For those who aren’t familiar, the Madame Leota character calls forth the spirits in the seance room of the ride and is essentially a floating glowing head in a crystal ball above a card reading table.  She was the obvious character for me because not only do I love her, but I also knew I could use my powerchair to my advantage with being at a lower table height and by having my chair support the table structure.
I could not hear a thing in my Madame Leota costume with my head in that globe with all the fans running, no one could hear me, and I couldn’t gesture from under the table.  So, I had my husband and I connected through Bluetooth earpieces and he was the only one I could talk to or hear.  All day people kept trying to talk to me, but it was like they had to go through my bodyguard!
We also spent some time waiting in line for the parade to start and I would just hold perfectly still letting people believe I was a table and prop- they even tried to lean on me- then I would slowly and eerily turn my head and make direct eye contact.  I really startled some people with that!  I maintained that eerie head turn during the parade as I rolled down the route and people couldn’t figure out if I was a real person or not until I looked them straight in the eyes!
Tumblr media
In the current Disneyland ride, Madame Leota is basically a crystal ball with a disembodied head inside floating above a table, but in older versions, the crystal ball sat directly upon the table.  I opted to pass on decapitation and emulate the older version, so I constructed a table surface to rest on my wheelchair frame and placed a large hole for the crystal ball to be placed.
I used tablecloths to cover the table, my body, and the wheelchair, including a table cloth with the wallpaper pattern from the ride.  The crystal ball I used was a large acrylic globe meant to cover an outdoor light.  It had poor ventilation, so I used small fans to blow air in and out of the globe from the table underneath and I cut ventilation holes into the table.  I also installed battery operated lights around the globe hole shining upwards for added ambiance at night.  I found the most amazing blue and white wig that was huge enough to fill nearly the whole globe and I added blue LED lights in the wig scalp to make it glow at night.
Of course, I had a couple of battery operated candles to set the mood, too.  For make-up, I used white foundation and contoured with blue and green to emulate the glowing effect from the ride.  And then I just scowled and sucked in my cheeks the whole time since Leota has cheekbones to die for!
Tumblr media
Alas, I have yet to attend a convention in costume.  It’s certainly a goal of mine as I would love to see all those amazing costumes in person.  I am working on building up my ability to be in large crowded spaces which can sometimes be a bit overwhelming and take a lot of energy for me to navigate.  I’m very thankful for Instagram and social media which have helped me to connect with the costuming and cosplay community online.
I always loved dressing up for Halloween and even as a child, I had a singular vision of how I wanted my costumes to look.  That singular vision meant that I had to custom make accessories and clothing.  So, out of a love of costuming, I learned to sew and became an avid crafter.  As my health has become more challenging with time, those skills stay with me and for the most part, these craft hobbies are still accessible to me, though sewing has been on the back burner for a while.
My latest projects have been around personalizing my newest power chair, like making custom cushion covers and accessories for myself.  I love looking at mobility aids not just as tools, but as an extension of the body which are to be celebrated and adorned.  I love the growing community online that gets so creative with connecting costume and fashion with mobility aids.

Fate - Chapter 2
Authors Note: Aubrey's ex-boyfriend will be portrayed by actor Ryan Guzman, based on his role in Boy Next Door. In case anyone is wondering since he will be mentioned in this chapter. And Kenny Rixton will be Jay's partner in this series, because I loved his character (Not that I don't like Hailey, I just don't think Rixton got enough credit for his role)
Chapter 2
It had been two weeks since Detective Jay Halstead had met his son for the first time, and he couldn't be happier. He was madly in love with the little boy who had warmed up to him quicker than him or Aubrey had expected. Henry was glued to Jay's hip from the moment the little boy spotted his father walk into Hank's home. It made it difficult for Aubrey to put the little boy down for bed, resulting in Jay having to carry the little boy up the stairs, laying with him until Henry fell asleep. There were a couple of nights where Jay had fallen asleep, waking up the next morning to see Henry cuddling with him while his little hand was holding onto whatever part of Aubrey he could, with her arm draped across his little stomach, and Jay’s arm wrapped around the both of them. Jay had ended up snagging a photo of them and putt it as his lock screen wallpaper.
Hank Voight had given Jay a week off, he spent that entire time spending time with Henry as much as he could, the days that Aubrey worked, Jay would watch their little boy. The week that he had went back to work, he hated being away from the little boy, who was being babysat by Cindy Hermann, the only person Aubrey and Jay could agree on.
Once he had got back to work, Hank had pulled him into his office, wanting to investigate Aubrey's ex-boyfriend, without the woman knowing. He had pulled the entire team onto finding out whatever they could on the man. Jay had decided to check out Aubrey's Facebook page since he was friends with her, seeing if there was anything that he could find. Jay wasn't surprised that there wasn't much information on there, barely any posts.
"I got something..."
Jay looked up to see Kenny Rixton speaking from his desk, causing him to push his chair back from his desk, standing up. Jay let out a breath as he moved towards Kenny's desk, standing behind him, looking to the computer screen. "According to his Instagram name, his name is Noah." Jay looked at all the different pictures displayed on the screen. He felt a pain in his chest seeing the dark-haired man, his dark eyes, silently admitting the man was decent looking. Jay's eyes looked to the few pictures of Noah and Aubrey, it felt like his heart clenched seeing another man kissing her cheek, a large smile on her face, the same smile he had put on her face over the years.
"See if you can run any facial recognition." Hank's voice caused Jay to tear his eyes away from the screen, "I want to know what we are dealing with. I rather be prepared than be caught off guard." Hank added then looked to Jay, "Aren't you supposed to be meeting your father?" Hank questioned and Jay glanced to his watch to see the time.
"I'm late." Jay realized that he was going on twenty minutes late, he was suppose to pick up Henry and Aubrey, so that his father could meet their son for the first time for an early lunch, "I gotta go..." Jay moved quickly past Hank and towards his desk to grab his jacket, cell phone, badge and gun, then headed for the stairs.
Jay had been hesitant to allow Pat Halstead to meet his son, considering that Pat had not always been kind to him, he didn't want his son to deal with that. Aubrey had mentioned introducing Henry to Pat, since Jay was trying to give the man a second chance now that he had stopped drinking. Jay had been torn about it for a few days, but he finally caved. Jay had told Aubrey that he didn't want his father to be alone with Henry, just not trusting him entirely. Aubrey respected his wishes, and he had called his father to tell him the news. Jay had to admit that he was surprised that Pat handled the news pretty well, it helped that Pat had always loved Aubrey saying, "I'm glad it's her and not some hussy you slept around with."
Pat had no filter, since he had been on speaker phone, Aubrey had heard his words, and Jay could have sworn that Aubrey looked hurt at the comment. Jay knew that there was a lot of history between him and Aubrey, and as much as he loved her through everything, he still had needs. He knew that if he heard about Aubrey's sex life, he would probably want to drive his truck into a building. He didn't want to think about another man touching her, he couldn't think about it, because he would end up losing his entire shit. Jay had offered her an apology for his father's blunt comment, and watched as she just shrugged it off, focusing her attention on Henry.
Now rushing through the streets of Chicago, Jay had glanced to his phone to see that Aubrey had text him, saying that she and Henry were going to be meeting Pat at a small pizza joint near his apartment building. He definitely didn't want Aubrey and Henry alone with Pat. He found himself rushing to pull in front of the restaurant, slamming his truck into park and climbing out.
Quickly walking through the door, Jay spotted Aubrey, Henry and Pat sitting in a corner booth, noticing that Will Halstead had joined them. Aubrey was smiling at something Pat was saying as Henry sat on Will's lap, and he slowly made his way across the floor towards his family.
"Dada!"
Jay grinned hearing his son's voice, watching as he quickly climbed out of Will's arms, and out of the booth, running straight for him. Jay quickly bent down to pick the little boy up.
"Hey buddy, you having fun?" Jay questioned, kissing his son's cheek then moving towards the booth, sliding in next to Aubrey, kissing the side of her head, "Sorry I'm late. There was a case we were working on." Jay commented, letting Henry settle on his lap, "Hey dad, Will." Jay looked to his father and brother, giving both men a nod.
"Pat was telling me how much Henry is like you." Aubrey commented causing Jay to glance to her, "Guess you were a shy too, which surprises me for how much trouble you'd get in as a teenager." Aubrey joked with a playful wink causing Jay to chuckle.
"I never thought I'd live to see the day that you would have a son Jay." Pat commented, "He's a real good lookin' kid, I see a lot of you in him, but mostly Aubrey." Pat joked causing Aubrey to chuckle beside Jay.
Jay focused his attention on Henry who was using the crayons on the table to draw on the paper mat, he wasn't too interested in having a conversation with Pat. There was still a lot of resentment that Jay held towards his father, and was extremely skeptical of having him in his life now that Henry was involved.
"So are you two living together?" Pat questioned, causing Jay to glance up from seeing what Henry was drawing.
"No, I am staying with my father for right now." Aubrey spoke up, "I had an apartment that fell through when I moved here." Aubrey explained.
"How is the pizza here?" Will questioned, trying to change the subject on behalf of his brother's sake, knowing that this conversation was going to cause some tension, but Pat cut him off.
"You two ever think you'll get your shit together?" Pat chuckled. Jay tensed and felt Aubrey's hand on his knee under the table within seconds, giving him a squeeze, trying to calm him down, "Jay, she's a good girl, I've told you that since she started coming around. You need to step up and be the man she deserves or let someone else." Pat spoke coolly, Aubrey swallowed loudly as Jay tensed beside her.
"Well, right now our main focus is Henry." Aubrey spoke up, "We aren't the same people we were back when we were kids Pat, a lot has happened." Jay used his free hand to lay it on top of Aubrey's as it rested on her leg under the table.
"Well you're the best thing that's ever happened to him." Pat stated, "I've seen some of the chicks..."
"Enough." Jay snapped, not wanting to have Aubrey hear any of what was going to come out of Pat's mouth, "Is this how you really want the first time you meet your grandson to go?" Jay questioned heatedly, keeping his voice low to not upset Henry, "Unbelievable." Jay shook his head with disgust, "I get it, I'm no Will, but don't you dare ever question if I'm man enough." Jay nearly growled, and Aubrey decided to speak up.
"Jay..." Aubrey's soft voice caused him to tear his glare away from his father, then glanced to Aubrey, feeling her hand squeeze his hand, silently telling him now wasn't the time.
"No Aubrey, let him say what he wants." Pat offered, while Will spoke up beside his father.
"Now is not the time for this." Will stated trying to de-escalate the situation.
"No. Now is the perfect time for this." Jay gently lifted Henry from his lap, moving the little boy to Aubrey, who wrapped her arms around the dark-haired boy, then turned his attention to Pat, "Since I met her, you've done nothing but shove it in my face how Will would be a better match for her. You've done nothing but try to beat me down since mom died, when I found her, you decided to try to beat me down even more. You don't know anything about our relationship, so you have zero input on what happens, and you get to make no comments on what you think. The only thing that matters is I love her and I love our son, and I'll spend every day of my damn life making sure I never treat them the way you treated me." Jay spoke heatedly and Aubrey frowned, not knowing that Pat had used his favoritism with Will against Jay when it came to their relationship, "You can't even just focus on your grandson because you have to try to prove a point that Will is a better person than me, he can offer them so much more than I can, it's pathetic, and this was a mistake." Jay added.
Aubrey was getting ready to speak up when her cell phone began to ring, then Will's and then Jay's, causing the table to fall eerily silent for a moment.
Aubrey glanced to the screen of her phone, seeing that the hospital was calling and she was needing to come in because it was an all hands on deck situation. Aubrey glanced to Jay and then Will.
"I have to go into work." Will spoke up, glancing to Aubrey and then Jay.
"So do I." Aubrey stated, kissing her son's forehead.
"Me too." Jay moved to stand up from the booth, grabbing ahold of Henry, "I'll drive you." Jay stated, thankful he hadn't taken Henry's car seat out of his truck.
"Who's gonna watch Henry?" Pat questioned, hopeful.
Jay grabbed ahold of Aubrey's hand, helping her stand up from the booth while Henry was hoisted on his hip, Aubrey was about to answer, but saw Jay shake his head. Aubrey offered Pat a small smile as Will said his goodbyes to his father, quickly following Jay and Aubrey out of the restaurant.
Aubrey quickly called Cindy Hermann, who had began babysitting Henry just last week once her husband came in asking if the hospital had any part time positions available. Once Aubrey had told him that she was looking to hire a babysitter for Henry, Cindy jumped at the chance to watch the little boy.
As Jay drove his truck to the Hermann residence, it was extremely silent and Aubrey wasn't sure what to say. Aubrey decided to remain quiet as Jay pulled up to Cindy's home, moving to the back of the truck to un-hook Henry from his car-seat. Once the little boy was in her arms, she moved to Jay's door, allowing the man to have a quick goodbye, and was surprised that Jay opened the door, pulling her and Henry both into his arms. His face buried into the curve of her neck for a moment, feeling him let out a big sigh, then turned to face his son, kissing him on top of his head, and telling him he loved him. Aubrey quickly made her way up to the porch, promising Cindy that she would let her know as soon as she could what time she would be back to get him, then kissed her son, and jogged to Jay's truck.
Driving through the streets of Chicago, Jay found himself reaching for Aubrey's hand. His fingers lacing around hers as her hand rested in her lap, giving her hand a squeeze. Jay knew that he couldn't speak because he was still angry over Pat's comments, but this was his way of letting her know that he was somewhat okay. Jay glanced to the woman, seeing her a pair of black boots, black jeans and a white t-shirt that was covered by her black leather jacket.
"Do I need to take you to the house to get scrubs?" Jay spoke quietly, seeing Aubrey turn her head away from the window to look at him, and shake her head.
"I have an extra set of scrubs and shoes in my locker at the hospital." Aubrey commented, "Do you think your call had anything to do with why we got called in?" Aubrey found herself questioning.
"I'm not sure." Jay spoke, "Voight didn't say anything other than we needed to come in." Jay added pulling under the awning of the hospital, "I'm sorry for how I reacted to what he was saying." Jay added a few moments later, "I shouldn't have done that with Henry there."
"Jay don't apologize, okay?" Aubrey gave him a soft smile, squeezing his hand, "Be safe, okay?" Aubrey moved to reach for the door handle, and Jay had stopped her.
"I meant what I said, about loving you, loving Henry..." Jay spoke quickly, "I might not be the man you deserve, but I will try like hell to be." Jay added.
"Jay..." Aubrey sighed, her hand reaching to cup Jay's cheek, "We will talk about this later, okay?" Aubrey hated that she couldn't continue this conversation, and leaned towards Jay to brush her lips against the corner of his mouth, "I promise, we'll talk about this later." Aubrey promised, watching as Jay's eyes turned hopeful, "Now go save the city Detective." Aubrey heard Jay chuckle as she climbed out of his truck, shutting the door and rushing into the hospital.
Aubrey rushed into the locker room to change into her maroon colored scrubs and white sneakers, tying her long hair into a tight bun at the top of her head, and quickly went to work.
"What do we have?" Aubrey questioned to Will Halstead as he met her at the nurses station, gesturing for her to follow him into a patient's room.
"I'm not entirely sure." Will stated, "It's some sort of flesh eating bacteria." Will stated, moving the patients cover down to reveal a large portion of the man's leg, and Aubrey couldn't help the small gasp that escaped, seeing the man's flesh oozing different liquids, the skin practically eating itself.
"Start him up on IV's, keep him monitored until we figure out what this is." Aubrey glanced to the nurse, then back to Will, "It looks like you and I are going to be doing some research."

Ghost Hunting
Warning: one swear word
"Hey guys! Its me, y/n and today we're doing a ghost hunting episode!"
You were a popular youtuber and an occasional tv show actress. You were currently speaking to a handheld camera, outside a huge victorian-age mansion, at past midnight. You were with your neighbor, Joe Mazzello, who agreed to be in your vlog since you guys have the same agent. You weren't particularly a fan of this guy, but since he's now a big shot actor, it would be great to have him in your vlog.
"Now, I'm with a really special guest tonight, you might know him as John Deacon in the award-winning film Bohemian Rhapsody, its Joe Mazzello!" You panned the camera to the man dressed similarly as you. Black rain jacket, a GoPro strapped on his forehead and chest, and a backpack for his goods. He gave a tight-lipped smile and waved as he said "Ghosts aren't real!" to the camera.
You narrated the history of the place as you walked up the grand entrance of the house. Joe kept his flashlight forward and occasionally drops a witty comment about the facts you've gathered.
"So what do you think, Joe? Are you down to catch some ghosts on film tonight?" You faked your enthusiasm to mask your fear."Fingers crossed! Lets do it!" He was somehow cheerful despite the terrifying nature of the expedition. He was just really excited to be working with you, spending the night together despite being in an allegedly haunted house. You exhaled at the mic attached on you. "Alright lets do it!"
Joe opens the large wooden door creaking all the way through. Your handheld light bursts through the hallway, making the cobwebs, dust, and decades-old furniture visible to both of you.You can feel your heart hammer against your chest as you ventured deeper into the hallway. You were sure Joe was making a funny joke but you were too nervous to even comprehend. He seemed to notice your anxiety as he pulled you behind him. "Why are you doing this anyway?" He asked, chuckling as he wiped his sweat."Its fun. Imagine if we actually catch a ghost on video though" you tried to be nonchalant. Suddenly you hear heavy footfalls from upstairs. Like someone running.
"Oh shhh- shnipes!" Your heart was about to leap out of your mouth as you tried to keep your language PG. Joe remained unfazed as he pointed his flashlight to the direction of the stairway. "Its probably just a cat." He laughed at your reaction. Not cool, Joe.
You kept moving around the ground floor of the house, suddenly feeling colder at some parts of the house, particularly the dining hall. "Is that the music room?" Joe announced as he headed to the last room at the end of the hallway. "Joe, wait!" You chased him, afraid of being left alone. Despite being neighbors, you and Joe weren't really close. He was constantly away and if ever he was home, you had no reason to come over. Your only interaction with him was when you meet at the lobby of your building, or in the basement parking. An occasional smile, good morning, thats it. At some point, you assumed he was somewhat conceited, but so far he's been nice and funny.
The room was empty except for an upright piano fitted against a wall near a french-style window. There were no other pieces of furniture in the room."Okay so this is the room where there were said to be apparitions of the last lady of the house. The reason why there are no other furniture in this room is that the lady would throw objects at whoever dares to intrude." You spoke to the camera."How does that make you feel, Joe?" You panned your handheld camera to him while he was walking up to the piano, touching the dust-covered keys and pressed a chord you recognized as the first key to Bohemian Rhapsody. "I feel that its a shame she doesn't keep a bass guitar here." He chucked. You caught yourself laughing, slowly loosing up the tense situation.
Suddenly you hear a third laughter from within the room. You held your breath and held eye contact with Joe. "Did you hear that?" You whispered. He nodded, slowly backing away from the piano. He pulled you out of the room and into the end of the hallway, near the exit.
"Joe what was that?" Your voice was trembling now.
"I have no idea y/n" he said as he moved toward the main door.
"We cant leave yet! We have to go see upstairs! Management will have my head if we cower and cut the trip short!" You said, slightly annoyed at Joe.
"Are you serious? You look like your gonna pee in your pants a few minutes ago!"
"I'm serious, Joe. Get up here." You said, already climbing up the stairs.
The second floor wasn't much different as from the first. The wallpaper still had the faded sky blue design, the air still felt stuffy, and it still was dusty everywhere. You quickly moved through rooms, narrating about the various deaths that allegedly occurred there. Joe was quiet the whole time.
You reached the master's bedroom. Despite being dusty, the furniture in this room was grand. The bed was a large four-poster bed, still equipped with embroidered cushions and bed sheets. There were several paintings of people on the wall, Joe went over to see them. You, however, opened a plain-looking door adjacent to the bed. As the door creaked open, Joe looked over to you.
"Its a nursery." You said, spotting a crib in the room.
You stepped in the room to find a tall shelf filled with Victorian-age wooden dolls. You moved closer to the shelf in order to get proper footage. Suddenly your eyes caught some movement at the top corner of the shelf. Shining a light, you felt goosebumps rise on your skin as you witnessed a doll blink twice.
"Shit!" You started to bolt toward the door when it slammed shut, almost smacking you in the face.
"Joe!! Open the door!" You screamed, slamming your palm at the door. You felt the room shake and see the dolls fall to the floor. The room is filled with manic laughter coming from the dolls as they seem to move closer to you. You've now sunk to your knees as you continued to scream and cry for help.On the other side of the door, Joe was trying to twist the doorknob but it wouldn't budge. He was also panicking upon hearing your screams. He faced the painting of a woman in black clothes and screamed "what do you want? What do you want from her?!" The face in the painting smiled.
Suddenly everything was quiet. The only sound was your sobbing and the creaking of wood against Joe's shoes as he pulled the door open. He saw you on the floor and didn't hesitate to pick you up and carried you downstairs, through the exit and into the SUV he drove on the way here. Both of you were still catching your breaths as Joe sat you on the passenger seat.
Tears still kept flowing from your eyes, your cameras and microphones still recording, and hands still trembling. You closed your eyes and counted down to one in order to calm yourself.Joe was looking at you, feeling relieved like never before. He was never a believer of the supernatural, but for a moment he had to make a bargain to save you. You.
Joe looked back at the second floor to see the old lady dressed in Period clothes standing by the window, staring down at him. He stared back fiercely as he pulled his phone out of his pocket, swiped up to the camera app and took a picture of the house, the lady still visible.
"What are you doing?" You asked Joe, finally feeling better.Joe looked to you and smiled. Your eyes were still red and rimmed with tears but he thought you were very beautiful. And brave.
"Nothing. Let's take a selfie!" He said, flipping to the front camera and snapping a picture.
The sun was slowly creeping by the time you pulled out of the mansion's driveway. Warm yellow sunshine taking over the darkness of that horrid night felt like heaven, You smile contentedly as the sunlight hits your face through the windshield. "Mcdonalds?" Joe asked. You nodded enthusiastically.
Three weeks later, Joe was contacted by his agent to come at the office to see the edited video of your vlog before it gets posted on your channel. He was holding a hot cup of coffee as he entered the office, greeted his agent and took a seat. His agent brought out a laptop and faced it to him as the video started playing.
"Who edited this?" He asked, halfway through the video.
"Y/n herself." He was surprised that most of her scaredy-cat moments weren't edited out. He thought y/n was a very brave person for being able to face her fears and not being afraid to show that she does get scared sometimes. He had no qualms about the video so it was bound to be posted within the hour.
Joe took out his phone and opened instagram to post two pictures. One was an enhanced photo he took of the mansion where the victorian lady can be clearly seen through the window, and the second photo was the selfie of him and y/n.
joe_mazzello: spent a crazy weekend at a haunted mansion with @y/ig/n who proved herself to be one of the bravest people I know. INSANE GHOST HUNTING ADVENTURE link in bio!

Soraya Roberts | Longreads | March 2020 |  9 minutes (2,261 words)
The image that struck me most was the empty piazza. That Italian square — I believe it was in Venice — with no one in it. Maybe a bird or two. It looked inviting but also wholly unnatural. A city square is made for people, lots of people, people from everywhere. If people aren’t there, does it cease to be a square? I wondered the same thing about the Louvre and its tens of thousands of objects with no one to look at them — is it still a museum, or is it just a warehouse? I wondered about all those Berlin concert halls with no one to hear their music, all those Indian cinemas with no one to watch their films, all those crumbling ruins everywhere, standing there with no tourists to behold them or to record that beholding for everyone else. At this particular point in history, does art exist if we aren’t sharing it?
By sharing I mean not only sharing a moment with the art itself, but also sharing the space with other people, and more literally, sharing all of that online — posting updates on Facebook, photos on Twitter, videos on TikTok, stories on Instagram. This kind of “sharing” is constriction rather than expansion, regressing back to the word’s etymological root of “cutting apart.” This contortion of a selfless act into a selfish one is symptomatic of a society that expects everyone to fend for themselves: Sharing online is not so much about enlightening others as it is about spotlighting yourself. It’s impossible to disconnect the images of those now-empty spots from the continuous splash of reports about the coronavirus pandemic gouging the global economy. In America, the economy is the culture is the people. Americans are not citizens; they are, as the president recently put it, “consumers.” And on the web, consuming means sharing that consumption with everyone else. That the images suddenly being shared are empty exposes the big con — that in reality, no one has really been sharing anything. That social distancing is nothing new.
* * *
Even before Hollywood started postponing all of its blockbusters and talk shows started filming without audiences and festivals started to dismantle and bands canceled their tours and sports seasons suspended indefinitely, the public was turning on cultural institutions run by a subset of morally dubious elites. In December 2018, protesters at the Whitney Museum of American Art burned sage (“smoke that chokes the powerful but smells sweet to us”) and forced the departure of the board’s vice chairman, Warren Kanders, the CEO of the company that manufactures tear gas that has reportedly been used at the border. Two months later, artist Nan Goldin, who had a three-year opioid addiction, led a “die-in” at the Guggenheim over the museum’s financial ties to the Sackler family, the Purdue Pharma founders who many hold responsible for the opioid crisis. In the U.K., the Tate Modern and Tate Britain also dropped the Sacklers, while climate activists pulled a Trojan Horse into the courtyard of the British Museum to protest the sponsorship of an exhibition by oil and gas company BP. As performance artist Andrea Fraser, known for her institutional critiques, wrote in 2012, “It is clear that the contemporary art world has been a direct beneficiary of the inequality of which the outsized rewards of Wall Street are only the most visible example.”
If that recent exhibition of impressionist paintings seemed oddly familiar, or that ballet you just saw appears to keep coming back around, or that one classical musician looks like he’s hired nonstop, it’s not your imagination. It’s a function of that exclusive control, of the same artists, the same works, the same ideas being circulated (“shared”?) by the same gatekeepers over and over and over again. “Far from becoming less elitist, ever-more-popular museums have become vehicles for the mass-marketing of elite tastes and practices,” wrote Fraser in Artforum in 2005. Which is why certain names you wouldn’t think would cross over — from contemporary artist Jeff Koons to art-house filmmaker Terrence Malick — are more widely known than others. According to The New York Times in 2018, only two of the top 10 all-white art museum chairs in the country are women. And almost half of the 500-plus people on the boards of the 10 most popular American museums have become rich off the finance industry, while many others owe their wealth to oil and gas; the small group that is responsible for exploiting the world is the same group that is responsible for its enlightenment. They determine which pieces of art are bought, how they are curated, and how they are disseminated — theirs are the tastes and practices we are sharing.
With this “increasingly monopolized market and increasing parochialism,” German artist Hito Steyerl explained last year, “a sense of international perspective gets lost, which is a wider sign of rampant isolationism.” And this doesn’t just apply to high arts, but “low” arts as well; movies, music, television, theater, books have all been corporatized to the extreme, with huge amounts of money going to a few while the majority lose out. This is how you get a never-ending Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Leslie Harris — the first African American woman to win a Dramatic Feature Competition special jury prize at Sundance for writing, directing, and producing her 1993 film Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. — still can’t get a second feature off the ground.
While public funding for the arts has plummeted since the ’80s, however, the web has increasingly encouraged public sharing of its consumption on social media. Online, we look more traveled, more cultured, more inclusive than ever before. And it’s difficult to argue that wider access to art, that our increasing proximity to foreign cultures, could be wrong. But if you look closer, you notice that all this connectivity is largely superficial — it is heavily prescribed and strongly overlaps. The latter-day bourgeoisie all travel to Portugal at the same time, all visit the same Marina Abramovic exhibit, all watch the same Agnes Varda films, attend the same Phoenix tour. They clamor less to immerse themselves than to record and reproduce everything they have experienced, their distraction expressed by the ever-growing collection of imagery memorializing all the different experiences they’ve had — the same kind of different as everyone else’s.
“An idea of progressive internationalism,” Steyerl told Ocula magazine, “is progressively abandoned or gets snowed under constant waves of affect and outrage manipulated by monopolist platforms, and solidarity is swapped for identity.” In other words, all of this supposed sharing is really a tech-sanctioned performance of capitalism to showcase one’s value in a toxic din of competing consumers. The more photogenic the better, which means the less nuance, the better; think the Museum of Ice Cream, which costs almost 40 bucks for access to photo-friendly adult playgrounds — “environments that foster IRL interaction and URL connections” — like a “Sprinkle Pool” of multi-colored biodegradable bits you can’t actually eat. And the more recognizable the look (see: the retro aesthetic of any teen Netflix show), the more heady words like “nostalgia” become a proxy for depth that isn’t actually there. As we speed online through Steyerl’s distracted fragmentary so-called “junktime,” we quickly compound what she dubs “circulationism,” propagating images with the most power, giving them even more power. Standing next to the Mona Lisa, for instance, offers greater token currency among a wider set than standing next to anything by Kara Walker, who speaks to a more immersed but smaller audience. Either way, online, currency is king.

Culture has, above all, become a mark of personal wealth. When Americans share their experiences on social media, they are sharing their cultural capital with a neoliberal society that defines them by it. This is a result of the culture war Fraser recognized several years ago, which “has effectively identified class privilege and hierarchy with cultural and educational rather than economic capital.” But, again, economics ultimately rules. While the poor may be allowed to briefly occupy the space of cultural capital, it is the rich who own it, who offer it up for limited consumption.
Yet the desperation to share, to express one’s value in a world that is so intent on devaluing us all, is deeply human. Which is why you get people Photoshopping themselves onto famous backdrops, which, from a cultural capital perspective, is no different from being there — on social media a photograph is a photograph, and the real Sistine Chapel looks the same as the Etsy wallpaper reproduction. People have always consumed art partly for the cultural capital rather than just the personal enrichment, but now the goal is to broadcast the enrichment itself to the public: sharing one’s consumption of the aura has priority over one’s actual consumption of the aura. Though a hierarchy persists even here. The authentic art consumer, the one who actually experiences the work in person, looks down upon the forger. As Walter Benjamin wrote, the aura of a piece of art is tied to its presence, which can’t be replicated. Which is to say the essence of art can only be experienced through the art itself — a picture can’t recreate it, but it does make its shared image more valuable.
It’s apt that right now, in the midst of a pandemic, the popularity of a cultural site can kill and that virtual tours are being encouraged over actual ones. What better way to illustrate that our increasingly insular art world has not in fact connected us at all, but has done the opposite? As Steyerl noted in e-flux magazine in 2015, the Louvre, that model of national culture, was a “feudal collection of spoils” before revolutionaries turned it into a public museum, “the cultural flagship of a colonial empire that tried to authoritatively seed that culture elsewhere, before more recently going into the business of trying to create franchises in feudal states, dictatorships, and combinations thereof.” Those with the means flock to symbols of elitism like this, not to widen their perspective in solidarity with the world, not to connect with a community of strangers, but to bolster their own value locally by sharing the encounter online. This is not globalism; this is the neoliberal stand-in for it.
All of that foot traffic, all of that online diffusion, is an expression of how we have commodified the individual consumption of art to the point that it looks like we are sharing it with others. We aren’t. We are instead dutifully promoting ourselves as valuable consumers in the capitalist community we are complicit in perpetuating. “It’s not a question of inside or outside, or the number and scale of various organized sites for the production, presentation, and distribution of art,” wrote Fraser in Artforum. “It’s not a question of being against the institution: We are the institution.”
* * *
One of the last movies I saw in the cinema before they started closing down was The Invisible Man. It was a perfect example of how a public screening can tell you what streaming cannot — in real time, you can gauge by the reactions around you whether or not it will be a hit. As with certain art installations, you are experiencing not only the art, but also simultaneously others’ experience with it. In that theater, we screamed and laughed and sat agog together. It was a spark of community that extinguished the moment the lights lifted. A few weeks later, these same strangers who shared that moment of emotion together, headed to supermarkets to empty out toilet roll aisles, buy up all the disinfectant, and clear out the fresh meat despite a collective need for it. These same strangers who in concert cheered on an oppressed heroine, went on to unashamedly side-eye the Asians in their community. Individuals in North American society can occasionally partake in a cultural experience with their neighbors, but in the end it’s to exhibit their own counterfeit edification. It’s telling that the big tech these individuals ultimately share their consumption on — Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Tumblr, Instagram — rarely funds the arts.
Which brings us back to those empty images from the start of this essay. Proliferating photographs of abandoned culture, of objects ignored, confront the hollowness of online sharing. Social media implies connection, but the context of its shares is as important as the context of art’s production and neither can be divorced from the hierarchies in which they reside. No wonder our meagre individual expressions of value dictated by capitalist enterprise fit perfectly within a capitalist enterprise that profits off our inability to ever sate ourselves. The only way to really share — with art, with each other — is to remove sharing from this construct. The only way to really connect — to support a collective of artists, to support a collective of human beings — is to distance ourselves from the misguided values we have internalized.
“At its most utopian, the digital revolution opens up a new dematerialized, deauthored, and unmarketable reality of collective culture,” writes Claire Bishop in Artforum. Under a worldwide pandemic, we see a move toward this — individuals freely leaking their cultural subscriptions, artists offering performances for nothing, even institutions waiving fees for access to their virtual collections. While the vulnerability spreading across America right now is ordinarily framed as weakness in the landscape of capitalist bravado, it is central to real sharing and offers a rare chance to dismantle the virulent elitism that has landed us here. It’s unfortunate that it takes a dystopia, a global interruption of the systems in place, to see what a utopia can be — one in which sharing is about the creation and cultivation of community, a reality that only exists outside the one we have built.

In need of new desk decor ideas for your home office? You’ve come to the right place. While many have recently made the transition to working from home, even if you aren’t used to it, there are some simple ways you can make your space simultaneously more productive and comfortable.
Not only are these home office desk ideas budget-friendly, they’re also stress-free and easy to implement in large and small spaces – all it takes is a little creativity and self expression. You’d be surprised how little touches like picture frames or plants can add new life to your work space and give you a much-needed boost to get through the day. Plus, taking the time to map out your space the way you want is a great way to stay productive through days of endless meetings and projects.
We’ve rounded up 16 of our favorite desk ideas for the home office that’s sure to give you some inspiration as you decorate and organize:
1. Use Unique Accents to Define Your Space
The first thing you’ll want to keep in mind when thinking of ideas for your desk decor is that even the small accessories can dictate your work space vibe. To create a sense of much-needed tranquility, a decorative sculpture can remind you to stay calm when you feel overwhelmed with tasks and everyday stressors. Or, if you want that ultra mod Silicon Valley office vibe, minimalist-style home accents are the perfect choice. Just remember, keeping it to just one or two items is key for honing in on a look while keeping your desk free of distracting clutter.
2. Build a Trendy DIY Terrarium With Succulents
Give your eyes a break from the computer screen with a pop of vibrant greenery. It’s a refreshing sight for tired eyes, and plants have been shown to boost your mood Since succulents are easy to care for and don’t require a lot of sunlight, they make the perfect work space companion. With some extra time around the house, be sure to give this fun DIY Terrarium a try.
3. Keep Yourself on Track with a Stylish Wall Clock
Wall clocks are a practical choice that might not seem exciting, but practical doesn’t have to mean boring. There’s a variety of wall clocks out there and, chances are, there’s one that fits your style perfectly – whether you’re a fan of sleek modern lines, traditional rich hues or beachy-chic flair. It’ll also help you stay on track with your deadlines and team check-in meetings.
4. Make it Personal with Your Favorite Memories
A smile can really make all the difference. Personalize your work space with photographs of your friends, family, pets or memorable moments. Good desk decor isn’t only about aesthetics, but about what makes you feel happy – so surround yourself with good memories to make work more enjoyable, and give those memories a worthy home tucked inside picture frames.
5. Create a Chic DIY Mousepad
If you like getting crafty, then you’ll love this desk decor project. Give your plain old mousepad a totally new look with fabric and spray adhesive in a few easy steps:
First, find a fun fabric that resonates with your style.
Trace the diameter of your mousepad onto the back of the fabric.
Cut carefully and use the spray adhesive to attach atop your old mousepad.
How easy is that? If you love the look of gold metallic polka dots, follow Lovely Indeed’s tutorial here.
6. Decorate With Motivational Messages
Hang up decor with motivational messaging for that little extra push on days you may be feeling unproductive. Whether it’s a simple “be happy” mantra or a quote that brings you joy, there’s plenty of ways you can display an uplifting message or two by your desk.
To recreate this clipboard art gallery look, you can use gorgeous free printables by Craft-o-matic. She took plain clipboards and painted the silver hardware in gold – so you can customize the look with your favorite colors.
Also keep in mind that motivational messaging isn’t restricted to just quotes or phrases – a picture says a thousand words, after all. Hang up a scenic landscape to whisk you away into your creative sweet spot, or consider a piece with artistic expression that reminds you of your dreams and aspirations.
7. Increase Focus With Inspirational Colors
White walls are fresh and clean, but too much white can actually inhibit creativity. Scientific studies have shown that colors can impact our productivity, and that bland gray, beige and white offices can create feelings of sadness and depression. Ick.
You don’t have to worry about going all out with the paint though – a couple pieces of wall art can do wonders for your desk space. Keep the creative ideas flowing at your desk with colors that help improve efficiency and focus and your overall well-being, such as blue, green or purple.
8. Add Dimension With Wallpaper
It’s not your mother’s wallpaper. The quality, styles and ease of use have really improved over time, and nowadays you have a sizable selection to choose from. Going for an urban-chic look? There’s faux brick wallpaper for that. Want to show off your worldly bohemian flair? There are so many vibrant patterns to browse. It’s the perfect solution for a hassle-free accent wall.
9. Organize in Style with Unique Bookends
If you’re a bibliophile, this is sure to rank as one of your favorite desk decor ideas. Keep your favorites and the books on your “to-read” list proudly displayed and within reach. A pair of bookends keeps your literary treasures neatly at bay, all while showing off your personality.
10. Keep Pens and Pencils at Hand
Have you ever been prepared to start working, only to get distracted by a mess? It’s easy to let things get out of control when you don’t have proper desk organization and you’re now home more than ever. Luckily, these trendy boxes neatly conceal all of your small trinkets so your desk area doesn’t become chaotic. Keep them close by for added style and functionality to your desk. Or, you can use small decorative baskets without lids to easily locate and grab what you need.
11. Keep Yourself Calm with Candles
Creative desk ideas don’t have to be purely visual. In fact, scent in your work environment can also have a big impact on your productivity. Keep your mind in the zone with scented candles housed in stylish holders. Lemon, jasmine, cinnamon, peppermint and rosemary are popular scents for boosting both mood and productivity. If you want to personalize candle holders with your own unique spin, consider glass holders. You can easily decorate the exterior or even fill the bottom with interesting textures, like natural rocks for a zen feel.
12. Bring Life to Your Desk with Plants and a Classy Vase
There’s a reason why indoor plants are so popular: they not only improve air quality, but they’re also shown to reduce stress, boost your mood and are nice to look at – of course it had to make our list of best home office desk ideas.
Once you’ve found your ideal plant or plants (be sure to check whether they’re pet safe or not if you’ve got furry friends), pair it with a stylish vase that can hold freshly cut flowers or stand out as an accessory of its own. You can just as easily fake a green thumb with pretty faux flowers in a set of small vases for the same effect.
13. Increase Storage Space With a Monitor Stand
Give your neck, and your desk space, a break with a monitor stand. This frees up your desk’s surface area, allowing you to slide papers, note pads or desk organizer tools underneath your computer monitor.
14. Illuminate Your Space With a Luminous Lamp
It’s desk decor that’s just as bright as you are. Whether you’re blessed with plentiful natural light or have an office space tucked away without windows, you could always benefit from better lighting – especially for extra light. Little pops of gold are always trendy, and integrate beautifully with all kinds of decor styles.
15. Arrange the Essentials on a Stylish Tray
One of the best things about working from home is that you don’t have to stay in one place all day. On a whim, you can take your work with you to your cozy sofa, your patio space or the kitchen bar. Make movement easy by arranging all your essentials, such as pens, notepads and a laptop charger, on a decorative tray. It looks great and makes transferring rooms a simple affair.
16. Elevate Your Decor Accents With Floating Shelves
Desk space is precious, especially if your home office is smaller. A great way to maximize the square footage you have is by installing floating shelves. They’re easy to DIY, and they make it easy to organize your essentials. Display your favorite books and home accents, and add hooks to hang small jars from – what an innovative way to store pens, paper clips and more.
If you’re not the type to whip out the hammer and measuring tape, then this ready-to-hang golden metallic wall shelf just might strike your fancy. With four slots to display your favorite home accents and store your office necessities, this fabulous find will help clear off desk space and inject cool style, all in one.
Did any of our desk decor ideas speak out to you? We’d love to see photos of your new home office. Since working from home for many of us might become the norm for the foreseeable future, make it your own productivity hub that works best for you. The important thing is to remain productive and focused wherever you find your work space.
Make sure to share the inspiration on Instagram with the hashtag #MyAshleyHome – it might just be our next featured post.

2010s Menswear Trends To Leave In The Past
Looking back, from the outside in, the 2010s were a bold and often brilliant decade for menswear. It was a time of experimentation, when no one look ruled. Men swaggered in tailoring, sportswear and everything in between at various points. Smart dress got casual, casual dress got fashionable. Not everything worked though, did it? Waking up the morning after the decade before, we can already cringe at some of the clothes we wore and some 2010s trends, especially from the first half of the decade, have already died a quiet death. Scoop-collar T-shirts, top knots and peacocking tailoring have all gone away without anyone needing to start a petition.Whisper it, but even a few of the classics got a little overexposed during the decade of Instagram. They’re too evergreen to retire completely but we must be getting a little bit tired of biker jackets, bomber jackets, Chelsea boots, roll necks and minimalist sneakers. But that’s not what we’re focusing on today. Below are a list of trends whose time is most definitely up, along with what to replace them with.Shrink-Wrap JeansSkinny jeans have only every really worked on men with a very specific leg shape. They look great on tall, lean men who only wear all-black, have a tendency to chain-smoke and are handy with a guitar. Basically, rock stars. If you’re not a rock star, don’t have skinny-but-not-too-skinny legs and aren’t at least six feet tall, then skinny jeans probably made you look like a tightly-wrapped sausage.Because the window for success rate with skinny jeans is so small, and the concept of the rock star doesn’t really exist any more, let’s just leave them behind shall we? It’s a small wonder what attracted millions of men to them in the first place anyway.Let’s face it, they’re hard to put on and take off; restrict your movement; the pockets are impossible to put anything in; they’re anti-comfort; make your top half look bigger (not in a good way), and make you look child-like. Yeah, let’s definitely leave them.H&MWhat To Wear InsteadWouldn’t you rather be able to move freely and sit down at will without fear of being cut in half? If you want a streamlined silhouette, go for slim jeans, but for the rest of us the most flattering cut is straight with a taper.Jeans with a slightly higher rise elongate the legs, making you look taller and, ironically, slimmer, which is probably what most skinny-jean wearing men were hoping for in the first place.Charlie Thomas, senior editorOverpowering LogosCuriously, the ’90s were big in news the ’10s. And of all the ’90s trends in fashion, none were in your face quite like big logos. From skatewear brands to luxury fashion houses, streetwear seized the day and took the resurrected trend to its breast, quite literally. And we’re not just talking logo tees and hoodies, but tracksuits, bags and knitwear all wallpapered in brand logos. Now, at the turn of the decade, logos have tired somewhat. The sustainability agenda, among other things has called on customers to ask for more creativity from designers beyond “how big can I make this font?”.The trend has evolved as such. Industry leaders like Off-White and Gucci have flipped the script creating off-kilter versions of their own logos, interspersed with creative graphics and printed them in unexpected places over its tees. Logos haven’t gone out of fashion, but being a walking billboard of your favourite brands shouldn’t be a priority in the ’20s.GucciWhat To Wear InsteadMake a statement in other ways, besides the fact you can afford certain designers. A bold shade is one. The other route is an all-over pattern. At once statement but also uniform in its nature, camo is the de-facto pattern of choice in streetwear. A camo in bright orange? Streetwear gold.Richard Jones, staff writerThe Menswear Blogger UniformThe 2010s was the decade that saw street style go stratospheric, with fashion week runways increasingly playing second fiddle to the well-dressed men outside the shows. While this meant plenty of outfit inspiration ripe for the plundering, it also ushered in a strange homogeneity of menswear which congealed to form the dreaded menswear blogger uniform. What constitutes said blogger uniform? Well, a five-minute scroll on Instagram should tell you. It’s a strange alchemy of otherwise innocuous menswear pieces (slim black jeans and a leather jacket, perhaps, or check trousers, tassel loafers and a camel coat) which come together to form a wardrobe that isn’t just safe, it’s peak passe.Ironic really, given that said uniform purportedly serves up a hefty dose of #outfitinspo. Who knew intentionally standing out could be so alarmingly conformist?ReissWhat To Wear InsteadRather than abiding by the tried, tested and tired formula of selecting clothes purely for their ability to ‘pop’ for street style photographers, instead consider the virtue of simplicity. That means no attention seeking clashing pattern, no purposefully contrasting outerwear to catch the eye and no acres of ankle flesh.Keep things pared back, but if you’ve worn your favourite combos 500 times already, mix them up. Quickly.Luke Sampson, head of creativeMuscle-Fit AnythingThere’s another name for muscle fit: too small. I mean, we get it. You boarded the train to Gainsville, ended up in Costa del Swole and now you want to show off your new hard-won pecs/biceps/quads (delete as appropriate). However, shirts and suits are not supposed to be compression gear. If there’s even the slightest risk someone’s losing an eye to a button-turned-missile, or you have to avoid taking the stairs because your trousers might not survive the journey, then, dear reader, we have a problem.boohooMANWhat To Wear InsteadFit is relative to the wearer. Not every guy is trying to stuff ten pounds of sausage in a five-pound bag, and equally, not every guy wants to be seen in trousers so wide they could double up as bell tents. In truth, there is no holy grail cut that will look good on every guy.To give yourself the best chance, aim to find the middle ground; where seams rest on your appendages rather than strain over them, where T-shirts fit like second skin and no one can see, quite literally, how it’s hanging.Luke Todd, deputy editorBushy BeardsAround the beginning of the 2010s, it seemed like every nan and her cat was clambering aboard the trend best termed, the lumbersexual. One part man who cuts wood but really just sits around doing latte art, the other a relic of the previous decade, the metrosexual, the admittedly-quite-boring uniform rested on a pair of skinny black jeans, a heavy flannel shirt, and of course, the bushy beard.Said facial hair was usually placed alongside a sharp fade on the sides, maybe a man bun up top and some neck tattoos for good measure. It worked on about five per cent of guys who tried it. For all the beard oil and trips to the barbershop, you really do have to be follicularly blessed for it to look smart and planned, and not like Tom Hanks in Castaway. What To Wear InsteadOne of the biggest problems with a big, sculpted beard is that it needs more maintenance than a 17th-century chateau. For something much more flexible and manageable, keep a trim, short beard that can quickly be shaved clean or trimmed down to stubble.Functionality That Doesn’t FunctionIn the last two or three years, menswear has gone big on utility wear, with designers and consumers alike getting unfashionably excited about clothes that are built for a purpose: hiking gear, performance fabrics, trail-running shoes and the combat-inspired warcore trend. If somebody came out with a Gore-Tex pocket square tomorrow, it wouldn’t surprise us.We’re all for functional fashion, but it gets a bit ridiculous when office workers don coats fit for the Antarctic during increasingly mild winters and when runways are awash with Call of Duty cosplay masquerading as high fashion.Tough fabrics? Great. Useful design points? Gimme. But after a certain point, this isn’t functional fashion at all. Empty, unused pockets are every bit as decorative as sequins or florals.SimonsWhat To Wear InsteadUnless you’re an actual reservist, leave the combat vests well alone and stick with functional fashion that actually makes your life easier. Breathable fabrics, sealed zips, concealed extra pockets, well-cushioned shoes and hoods that actually stay up are all worthy of the modern man’s wishlist.Outdoor brands like Patagonia and The North Face are worthy investments because their wares work as well in the city as the great outdoors. They’re also built to last and come with more sustainable brownie points than 90 per cent of other labels.Ian Taylor, editor-in-chief Source link

Two year before and after house tour! {I've done a LOT!}
Hello there! I was away at a blogging conference last week and I came home energized to tackle a bunch of projects both in the house and on the blog. I'm excited to get to work! But first, our two year anniversary in this house! It was just a few days ago and I can't let it pass by without a before and after recap from the past couple of years. I LOVE these posts because I see how I've made this house our home and can see proof that I'm a lot more productive than I feel at times. I hope you love before and after photos as much as I do! It's so much fun to look back. This time I'm using TRUE before shots -- taken before we moved in. Keep in mind the before pics look much bigger because there's nothing in them. :) I'll talk about what I completed in each space and link to the big projects as well. Let's start our tour in the foyer -- here's how it looked before we moved in:
And here's that space now:
I painted the ceiling a pretty blue (I love to paint ceilings!), changed out the light fixture (that one went to the pantry) and completed these projects:
$15 board and batten wall
DIY chunky door trim around front door and passage into great room
Our powder room was the first room I tackled after moving in, and I haven't changed one thing about it since:
If your basics are in good shape you can make a big difference with a little elbow grease!:
The big stuff stayed the same in here -- additions like a wall treatment, the mirror and wallpaper helped to transform the room:
How to hang peel and stick wallpaper
Board and batten tutorial
This is one of my favorite projects ever! Here's a before of my office:
A new light and DIY bookcases made a big difference!:
Our family room is another favorite. This is the room that made us fall in LOVE with this house:
DIY built ins by fireplace
Grid pattern on fireplace wall
Make a oversized coffee table for less
DIY picture ledges on stair wall
Affordable drapes and hardware for large windows
Our kitchen hasn't undergone any huge projects, but the little ones have made a big difference. Here's how it looked before we moved in:
And this view now:
I don't think any of these projects cost more than $100:
Stain and protect butcher block counters
Extend chunky sides of island
DIY cabinet feet
How to hang kitchen shelving
Upgrade ends of builder grade cabinets
DIY platter and cutting board storage on side of fridge (not pictured)
How to add light rails to cabinets to hide under cabinet lighting
Our morning room has undergone the most dramatic transformation:
I LOOOOVE the custom touches I've added in here!
Painting the dramatic wall color
Adding the window seat
DIY bookcases on window seat
DIY squares on wall with trim
Our master bedroom is slowly but surely becoming a cozy cocoon of a space and I love it! Big updates are happening in here this week -- check out my stories on Instagram to follow along!
The wood beams and dark tray ceiling have made a huge difference in here. I just love it.
Our basement hasn't seen as quite as much DIY action, but I've still accomplished a lot down here. Here's a before:
Here's that back corner now:
I added game storage and fun kid shelves as well:
Check out the wood wall on the stair landing and the gallery wall down the stairs here.
Our mud/laundry room is one of my favorite rooms in the house because it's so big and spacious. It looked great before:
But I've had a lot of fun adding my own touches to it!
Big chalkboard how-to
Painting interior doors black
Planked gray wall
No sew bench cushion
And last but not least, our backyard looked like this when we moved in:
And this summer we were able to add a large patio with a DIY fire pit. We absolutely LOVE it!!:
There are some rooms I didn't share because the projects aren't as dramatic -- but this shows how different the house looks in just two years. I can't wait to see what happens in the next year! :)
Did you miss any projects I shared here?
Keep in mind house projects are my JOB and my passion, so things happen at a quicker pace around here. It's been an absolute blast and I've had so much fun sharing it with you! We still pinch ourselves every day that we get to call this house our home.

Adtwixt - News: 7 Cheap Kitchen Renovation Ideas
Moving to another house doesn’t only require hiring the best moving company or Brooklyn movers; you still have to unload and unpack all of your moving boxes to make your house feel like home. This is an essential step to ensure that your entire household will be comfortable staying indoors. And being one of the most important areas of your house, you should start by renovating your kitchen. This is especially true if you’re an aspiring chef who wants to impress your guests and family with your cooking skills. Contrary to popular belief, renovating your kitchen doesn’t have to cost an arm and leg. Sure, you might need to allot a certain amount of money, but this will become a worthy investment in the long run. To help you start off, here are some cheap kitchen renovation ideas to try out: 1.    Bring in the pattern. Soft hues and pastel colors are common choices for a kitchen wall. These colors can easily complement any color you might have in your home. If you want your kitchen to be unique, opt to bring in a pattern. This means using wallpapers or decals on your kitchen walls instead of painting them with soft hues and pastel colors. You can also use printed rugs, hand towels, and silverware in your kitchen. Bringing in patterns to your kitchen will surely bring this area back to life! 2.    Hang floating shelves. Regardless of your cooking skill, you will always need storage in your kitchen. You need to properly store all of your silverware, spices, and cooking utensils, just to name a few. Aside from using cabinets (which are usually built-in in every kitchen), consider adding floating shelves in your kitchen. This renovation idea will not only improve the functionality of your kitchen, but it can also improve its aesthetic value. Just make sure that you’re using a material that’s suitable to the strength of your kitchen walls. 3.    Add color with stools.  Your kitchen will never be complete without seats. You’ll need to have chairs on your dining tables and countertops. If you want your kitchen to be as colorful as possible, invest in colorful stools which have contrasting colors to your overall theme. For example, if your kitchen has gray walls, look for stools in bright colors of green, blue, red, and yellow. Using these types of stools is like hitting two birds at the same time – you’ll improve the seating options in your kitchen while adding pops of colors. 4.    Use plates as wall décor. Do you have any broken plates? Are you having second thoughts in throwing these out because of their sentimental value? Worry no more because you can still use these plates even when they’re already shattered – but this time, as decorations. Glue broken pieces together and hang these plates on your kitchen walls. If possible, use plates which have different sizes and designs. You’ll be surprised how this simple tip can make your kitchen luxurious and attractive. 5.    Invest in an expensive dining table.  A dining table is essential in every kitchen. Every family will have to have a dining table in order to eat comfortably. If you’re looking for a showstopper piece for your kitchen, invest in an expensive dining table. If you’re leaning towards this direction, make sure that you’re choosing a dining table which fits the overall theme of your kitchen and your budget, as well. You don’t want a single dining table to become the reason why you’ll face too many debts, right? 6.    Add in plants. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know how beneficial plants are to your health and environment. Plants can improve air quality while being an excellent source of nutrients and minerals. For you to enjoy these benefits, add in different plants in your kitchen. You can add in small plants which fit in your countertops or bigger ones which can stand alone. When choosing which type of plant to have in your kitchen, always consider your lifestyle and schedule. Don’t have plants which will require daily watering when you’re available during the weekends. 7.    Improve lighting.  You might not know it, but the amount and quality of lighting you get from your kitchen can affect the ambiance of the space. If your kitchen is too dark, don’t expect that you’ll be motivated to cook anything or your guests will stay here for long. If you don’t want any of these to happen, improve the lighting of your kitchen. Add in pendant lights or lights under the cabinet for added functionality and style. Choose The Best Cheap kitchen renovation ideas aren’t only limited to the information from this article. If you have the time and interest, you can do your own research online and get ready to be bombarded with several other options. To narrow down your search, determine what you really want in your kitchen and while you’re at it, don’t forget to let your creativity and personality shine, as well! Kitchen and Residential Design
Fudgy Gluten Free Brownies with Coconut Frosting are a rich and decadent dessert. They truly take standard brownies to the next level. Hello coconut lovers, I’m back with another delicious coconut recipe to satisfy your sweet tooth! Todays recipe is a mashup of two recipes already on the blog – my Fudgy Gluten Free Brownie Recipe and the simple Coconut Frosting recipe I posted last week. You guys, when chocolate and coconut come together, magical things happen. I’m a big, big fan. Which, I’m guessing you’ve already assumed since there are so many chocolate and coconut recipes here. Recipes like Toasted Coconut Truffles, Toasted Coconut Fudge, and Almond Joy Brownie Bites. #yum Did you make this recipe? Leave a star rating and let me know in the comments! You can also leave a photo/comment on this pin for others to see. Adam isn’t normally as fanatic about coconut as I am but, you guys, he raved about these brownies. Like couldn’t get enough of them 🙌🏼 These brownies are now gone but he’s already requested more. I’m not going to lie, I love them enough too that I’m willing to hold off on some new recipe development to make them again! If you guys are all about that coconut life, you’re going to go nuts for these. Guaranteed 🥥👌🏼😎 How to Make Gluten Free Brownies with Coconut Frosting Step 1. Make the brownies then cool them completely. Step 2. Make the Coconut Frosting recipe. Step 3. Spread the frosting on the brownies in a nice, even layer. Then top with toasted coconut or coconut chips. Step 4. Chill the brownies in the fridge or freezer for 15-30 minutes (or until ready to serve) then cut into squares. You can skip the chilling time but cold brownies are easier to cut cleanly like you see in the picture. Tips for Making This Gluten Free Brownie Recipe  You can double the brownie recipe to make a full 9×13 pan and make the full frosting recipe. OR you can make the standard 9×9 brownie recipe and halve the frosting recipe. I highly recommend doubling the brownies! If you double the brownies, bake them for 30-35 minutes. To get the nice, clean slices you see in the photos, freeze the brownies for 10-15 minutes or refrigerate the brownies for about 30 minutes before cutting. If you love this recipe for Gluten Free Brownies with Coconut Frosting, be sure to follow me on social media so you never miss a post: | facebook | twitter | pinterest | instagram | youtube | Yield: 16 Gluten Free Brownies with Coconut Frosting Print Fudgy Gluten Free Brownies with Coconut Frosting are a rich and decadent dessert. They truly take standard brownies to the next level. Ingredients 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup all-purpose gluten free flour (See Notes) 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum 1/8 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1 Tablespoon cornstarch 2 large eggs (cold) 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled to room temperature 1/3 cup avocado oil (or canola oil) 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 Tablespoons water (cold) 1/2 batch Coconut Frosting 1/2 cup toasted coconut or coconut chips Instructions Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line a 9x9 inch metal baking pan with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, xanthan gum, baking soda, salt, and cornstarch. Make a well in the center and add the eggs. Beat the eggs and mix in the butter, oil, vanilla extract, and water. Mix until the dry ingredients are incorporated. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and bake at 325 degrees for 22-25 minutes. Cool completely in the pan before frosting. Top the completely cooled brownies with the coconut frosting and toasted coconut. Slice into 16 pieces and serve at room temperature. Notes I use my Nightshade Free Gluten Free Flour Blend in this recipe. If you use a flour blend that already contains xanthan gum, omit the amount called for in this recipe. If you like a firmer, more well-done brownie, you can bake them a little bit longer. The frosted brownies freeze well, just leave off the toasted coconut on top. Slice into individual pieces before freezing. Defrost at room temperature and top with toasted coconut before serving. Refrigerate the frosted brownies for 30 minutes before before slicing if you want nice clean cuts. Wallpaper is making a big comeback. Here’s how to choose, use and remove.
digital wallpaper for home Wallpaper is ready for its next act. The polarizing paint alternative and longtime decorating taboo has returned to fashion thanks to ultra-stylish prints, dimensional fabrics, and new materials that make it easy to install and, yes, to remove. Offering more drama than paint, it’s a fun way to transform a room and reflect your personal style without breaking the bank. Some designers even liken it to contemporary art for the mass market.
What’s caused the big comeback? It’s easy to attribute the sales spike to style bloggers, HGTV and Instagram, but at the core of wallpaper’s new popularity is a hint of rebellion.
Curtis says the renewed interest is in part a backlash to the “sterile grays-whites-neutrals” of the ’90s and early aughts, and the more recent obsession with the layered rugs and clustered collectibles of the California bohemian aesthetic. Wallcoverings offer a personal touch and less stuff. “People want their homes to feel special and unique,” she said. “Wallpaper is the perfect toy to do that with polish.”
Paulina Berberian, a creative director at Brewster Home Fashions, a wallcovering company, credits millennial consumers with driving the trend, as they’re new to the housing market and to wallpaper itself. “Young people who grew up in the clean, minimalism era have never had wallpaper,” she says. It’s likely they know it only as a design punchline, the busy ’80s florals popular with dentists and grandmas.
Indeed, today’s popular papers are vastly different from the old school. The prints are dramatically oversize and fantastically whimsical, with characters that feel pulled from a storybook and patterns right from the runway. The colors are richer. The fabrics are textured and sometimes three-dimensional. And the images have a lifelike sharpness thanks to advances in digital printing.
Speaking of which, we’ve hardly scratched the surface when it comes to custom-printed papers. Erin Burke, who runs the contemporary home furnishings website Burke Decor, frequently receives requests to scale and print wallpapers made from personal photos that can be tiled or enlarged to mural size. “It sounds strange, but remember, wallpaper is a conversation piece,” she said, adding that hotels and restaurants already do this in bar areas and bathrooms.
If there’s a common thread to modern wallpaper application, it’s restraint. Designers suggest using it sparingly and purposefully, in one or two rooms or perhaps a single accent wall (though fabric papers such as grass cloth should cover a whole room). For consumers, that’s low-cost and low-maintenance. Says Curtis: “An artsy, adventurous print can speak for itself.”
Low-maintenance is key. Installing and removing wallpaper used to be a notorious headache, so technology — including new adhesive formulas and stick-and-peel fabrics that strip off walls without leaving residue — has done wonders for its reputation. “The days of scraping and steaming are over,” Berberian said. “Less mess, less stress.”
Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, says wallpaper has never been more affordable or more convenient. Sherwin-Williams, the country’s largest wallpaper distributor, is planning to release four new books of wallcoverings this year, putting its total catalogue at more than 100,000 options.
Those numbers aren’t exactly comforting for folks who are already overwhelmed by all the patterns, textures, fabrics and materials to choose from. Where do you start? And when prices range from $25 to $500 per roll, generally, how do you set a budget? Here, we’ve offered a few guidelines for choosing, using and removing wallpaper.
●Types: Wallpaper is categorized by its material and adhesive coating. Nonwoven substrate paper is popular with renters because it dry-strips easily from the wall. Pre-pasted papers come with a water-activated adhesive backing. Both are durable, strippable and generally grease-resistant, which makes them smart choices for those with children or pets. Wallpapers are typically sold as single rolls or bolts (double rolls).
●Print matching: The “match” tells you how to line up the pattern from strip to strip. There are three types: straight, random and drop. Straight-match papers run the width of the paper and across the seam onto the next strip. Random-match papers continue seamlessly no matter what. Drop-match papers require extra planning and must be aligned horizontally and vertically on either side, as the pattern is slightly offset from strip to strip.
●Pastes and booking: Pre-pasted wallpapers usually need to be “booked,” which means wetting the paper and letting it sit, usually for about 10 minutes, while the glue activates. Unpasted papers don’t come with adhesive, so you’ll need to paste the wall or the back of the paper.
●Repeats and waste: Repeats are the number of inches a pattern stretches vertically until it repeats itself. Generally, the lower the repeat, the lower the waste. Solids and textures, for example, have no repeat and little waste because the amount you’ll need is easy to calculate.
●Calculating coverage: Before you buy, you need to determine how much wallpaper you need. This gets tricky when you take windows and doors into account, so using an online calculator (such as those offered by Lowe’s and Home Depot) is recommended. Exact roll measurements vary by manufacturer, but most cover 25 to 28 square feet. Retailers often price wallpaper by the single roll but sell only double or triple rolls.
●Upkeep: Wallpapers are surprisingly durable, and these days, maintaining them is easy. Scrubbable papers can be cleaned with a sponge and detergent. Washable papers can be gently cleaned or wiped with a damp cloth.
●Removal: Commitment-phobes should look for two types of paper: strippable and peelable. The former can be removed without water or chemicals and leave no backing. The latter peels off the wall and may leave some adhesive residue behind, which can be removed with soap and water.
Graham & Brown (grahambrown.com): The U.K. wallpaper company is gradually expanding into North America and is known for florals, ticking stripes and rich solids. The website allows shoppers to surf wallpapers by pattern, material, size and removability. A bonus: It also includes customer reviews.
Aimée Wilder’s Jungle Dream Lune Aimée Wilder (aimeewilder.com): Fresh, playful and on-trend, this Brooklyn artist’s imaginative motifs are bold without being loud. The Jungle Dream, Deliciosa and Cactus Spirit collections are inspired by exotic flora and fauna. Most are available in 10 or more colorways so you can find the best match for your project.
Burke Decor (burkedecor.com): Erin Burke’s online store sells tableware, lighting and furniture, but wallpaper has been her top seller every year since the site launched 10 years ago. Find fashion-inspired subjects such as jungle birds and botanical gardens, as well as geometrics, faux marble and brass.
Tibetan Grasscloth peel-and-stick wallpaper by Wallpops
Metropolis peel-and-stick wallpaper by Wallpops ($50 per roll). (Brewster Wallpops)
Brewster Home Fashions ( brewsterwallcovering.com ): Peel-and-stick papers are a great choice for apartment dwellers. WallPops, Brewster’s wallpaper-inspired take on wall decals, are essentially large vinyl stickers that you can cut to fit your space. Peel them off when you’re done.
Sherwin-Williams (sherwin-williams.com): A notch more daring than their joint paint lines, Sherwin-Williams and HGTV’s wallpaper collection has such themes as Neutral Nuance, Global Spice, Coastal Cool and so on. Each paper is dry-strippable, washable and eco-friendly.[Source]-https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/home/wallpaper-is-making-a-big-comeback-heres-how-to-choose-use-and-remove/2017/02/28/c9b2eb40-f88a-11e6-9845-576c69081518_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.6807bae55c6b
