COMPREHENSIVE GIFFING TUTORIAL (vapoursynth + ps cc 2018) + some tips and tricks on color correction, blending and subtitles

You guys asked for it, so here we are! This is by no means the gold standard to giffing. Rather, this is simply my process and my own preferences. Take it as you will. Additionally since I use a mac some of my controls/panels may look different than what you would see for windows users.

DOWNLOADING YOUR SOURCE

This step is extremely important to the quality of your gifset. If you want high-quality gifs I would recommend giffing sources in 1080p whenever possible (especially if you’re going for larger dimensions). You may get away with 720p for smaller gifs. For kdramas, your go-to source would be dr*maday or torrents. (you can search my faq tag if you’d like to know specifics on finding and downloading torrents).

IMPORTING + PROCESSING YOUR FILES WITH VAPOURSYNTH (VS)

Please note that this tutorial does not cover basic installation and set-up of vs. If you would like to know how to download and set-up vapoursynth (it works for both mac and pc) along with some of it’s basics you can find more information at: https://hackmd.io/@nibreon/vapoursynth-book/%2F%40nibreon%2Fvapoursynth-book

Once you’ve identified what portion of your video you’d like to gif, simply drag your video file into VS. Specify the start time and duration of the clip you’d like to import. Typically you’ll be aiming for ~3-8 second clip depending on how big your gifs will be. I am very lazy when it comes to importing. The less of it I have to do, the better. Therefore, I often import clips that are 10-15 seconds long, sometimes even up to 20 seconds. I wouldn’t recommend going over 15 seconds most of the time though, because this will usually bring you over the 500 frames photoshop allows you to import at once. (when I do go over, I will sometimes import the processed VS file into PS in segments). You can also choose to import the VS output as segments if you want all your gifs on separate canvases. (I'll go into more detail on this later)

Once you’ve imported the clip into VS your screen should roughly look like this once the resizer pops up:

In the top left is where you will be applying your cropping, sharpening and denoising filters. Cropping: Keep in mind the Tumblr dimensions: 540px for full-width gifs and 268px for half size gifs, 177/178/177px for 3 gifs across. The height is completely up to your own preference. Usually I work in 540x300px. Once you edit those parameters you can drag/resize your video file to fit your new canvas. Sharpening + Denoising: You can choose to skip this if you would rather sharpen in ps. I personally do all my cropping, denoising and sharpening in vs. I use finesharp and KNML for sharpening and denoising respectively. Once you select those two filters from their drop down menus, be sure the select the checkbox as well. You should now notice 2 additional lines of code in the top right box. The line that reads: video = core.knlm.KNLMeansCL(video, 0, 6, 4, 1.2, channels="YUV") is where you will adjust your denoising parameters. You will only be adjusting those 4 numbers. I usually use: 0, 1, 0, 1.2. Now find the line that reads: video = hnw.FineSharp(video, sstr=0.22). These are your sharpening parameters. once again we’re only adjusting the number at the end. I typically use somewhere between 0.33-0.55. Depending on the quality of your source and preferences these parameters may change.

Here is a breakdown of the KNML parameters (source: @/nibreon HackMD):

Once you have finalized your parameters, copy all the code in that top right box and paste it into your vapoursynth editor. Note: you can ‘inactivate’ certain lines of code by adding the # symbol at the start the line. That line of code will then be greyed-out. This is what your code should now look like (the highlighted section is the part I just copy and pasted):

If you would like to preview your filters and see if you need to make any adjustments, simply navigate to the top bar and select script > preview. If you like what you see, great! If not, you can adjust the parameters directly in the editor until you see a result you’re happy with. Once you’re happy you can move onto the final step in vs: processing.

Processing: Once again, navigate to the top bar and select script > encode video. Another window should pop up. Make sure you set ‘header’ to ‘Y4M’ then click ‘start’. Patiently wait for that to finish processing. The longer your clip is and the more filters you add, the longer it will take.

IMPORTING YOUR CLIP INTO PHOTOSHOP (PS)

Now you’re done with the vapoursynth section! Not too hard, right? I use the timeline method when I gif. To import your video file into ps navigate to file > import > video frames to layers. Here you can use the sliders to further specify what range you would like to import. Make sure the ‘make frame animation’ box is checked. To optimize smoothness of your gif, avoid checking the ‘limit to every _ frames’ box. Hit ‘OK’ and wait for the frames to import. Depending on the size of your clip, ps may notify you that you are importing a large file and it may take a long time to process, simply say ‘ok’ to this. UNLESS you get a message saying it will limit to 500 frames. This means your clips contained more than 500 frames and you should select a smaller section to avoid cutting out any critical parts. (Note: you can always go back and repeat this process to select a smaller range of frames from the same video clip until you’ve imported all the frames you need).

Timing: You can adjust the timing of your gifs before converting to timeline. Select all the frames (Navigate to the icon with the 4 bars at the bottom right of you screen. Select “select all frames”). Click the drop down next to the timing of any of the frames. Select ‘other’ and input a your preferred timing. I personally use ‘0.04′ but I've seen people use anywhere from 0.4-0.8ms. Also as a note: when you convert your gif to timeline it has a tendency to mess up your timing so even if you input 0.04 or 0.05 it won’t actually be that timing later. If you want the true frame rate you can set your timing right before saving. You can also adjust timing at the end. (see export/saving gif section for more info)

Now the next part can be tedious and for that reason I’ve created numerous actions to speed up this process. But for the sake of this tutorial I will walk you through the steps. At the bottom of your screen is your timeline. As you can see, it defaults to frames, but we want to convert this into a smart object so that all your coloring/edits are made to all of the layers. To do this: 1) Navigate to the icon with the 4 bars at the bottom right of you screen. Select “select all frames” 2) Now select all your layers in your layer panel. On mac you can use cmd + option + A as a shortcut. 3) Back to the icon with the 4 bars, select “convert to video timeline” 4) Right click on all layers (which should still all be selected) and find “convert to smart object”

(Aside: Actions) actions are SUPER helpful to streamlining your giffing process. you can find actions people have made available on resource blogs like itsphotoshop OR you can choose to make your own custom actions. To do this, all you need to do is locate your action panel. Then from the controls at the bottom of the panel select the one that looks like a sheet of paper to “create a new action” Once you’ve named it and hit ‘ok’ the record icon should now be red. PS will now basically ‘record’ whatever you do. To stop recording hit the square icon. Now whenever you want ps to execute the same set of steps you just did, you can locate the action you just made and ‘play’ it by selecting the triangle icon. I highly recommend making an action for the steps I just outlined above to convert your gif into a smart object timeline. It will make your process much faster and more painless.

COLORING

Now the fun part! I focus on emphasizing the colors already present in the video source or getting rid of some less-than desirable overtones when I color. It gives the gif a natural look, but makes everything pop a little more. We will be working with selective color, curves, levels, and brightness/contrast mostly. This is the original gif I will be using to demonstrate coloring:

Curves: I always start with curves. The first curve layer I use to set a desirable black point. To do this, locate the top dropper icon from the curves panel and select the darkest point of your image. This will set that section to “true black” Feel free to play around with this until you find a desirable outcome. Now add another curves layer. This one we will be using to adjust the brightness/contrast. First, I always start off with ‘auto’ and see where that takes me. If you like the outcome, great! If you don’t play around with the different curve points until you get an outcome you like.

Selective Color: This adjustment layer will be your best friend. For me, I will typically work with reds, yellows, and black. If the source has a lot of blue/cyan I will use those too. Basically look at your source and determine which base colors you’d like to emphasize/alter. For blacks I usually up the black by +1-5 depending on the source. For reds, it also depends on the source. But I will typically either decrease cyan (to make red stand out more) or increase cyan (to make the red not look so overexposed). You want to be careful here. Overexposing the red can make your skin tones look like red tomatoes! And for my content base, where most of the actors are of asian descent, we should be emphasizing the yellows and NOT the reds (see aside on color correction + skin tones for more info). After altering the reds to my liking, I do the same process for the yellows. To bring back natural skin tones and color, you will likely want to darken the yellows, expose them a bit more and maybe even up the yellow slider. A common rule of thumb: if you want to make any of the colors less exposed, increase the cyan. If you want to increase exposure on any of the colors, decrease the cyan. If you want a color to appear more strongly or prominently, increase the black. The magentas and yellows I use more to adjust hues. You can add multiple selective color layers to further emphasize your changes.

Levels: Now we will work on the lighting some more. This creates more contrast and depth to your gif, often making them look ‘crisper’ To emphasize the bright parts, move the right-hand slider to the left. The emphasize the dark parts, move the left-hand slider to the right. You may also choose to move the middle slider to adjust more neutral lighting. Do so until you find a setting to your liking.

Miscellaneous: Depending on your gif you may need to play with other adjustment layers. Some other ones I often use are the brightness/contrast and exposure to adjust lighting and add more dimension to the gif. For additional color correction I use color balance and to a lesser extent hue/saturation and vibrance.

(Aside: Color correction + skin tones): We are anti-whitewashing and anti-redwashing when it comes to asian media. Like I mentioned earlier, natural asian skin tones have yellow undertones, not red/pink. Therefore when you’re bringing in color you should be mindful of this delicate balance. Adding more red does NOT equal un-whiteashing. Be VERY careful how you balance the yellows with selective color/hues/color balance.

^^ Here is an example of what I mean by overexposing the reds. Poor seungho is looking as sunburnt as a cherry tomato. Note: if your original source is already overexposed with red, fix it! You can do this by applying the same basic principles I explained earlier. Try upping the cyan on the reds in selective color, or shifting the color balance to favor cyan over red with the color balance adjustment layer. You may also choose to favor the yellow over blue.

^^ Now this is straight-up whitewashing. This is what happens when you are not careful with your correction of yellow. I’m not saying you can’t touch the yellow slider or get rid of some yellow form the overall image (because sometimes it is very much needed), but you should be very mindful how your corrections can affect skin tones. If you decide to decrease saturation of yellows, or decrease yellow in the selective color section of the reds, do so with caution. If your reds are looking too pink, add some yellow in the red selective color, up the yellow and black of the yellow selective color.

^^ If you hit that happy medium, you can emphasize the natural skin tones without overexposure. Here the underlying tones are very much still in the yellow range.

(Aside: Blending): I will very briefly talk about how to blend two gifs together. First make sure you’ve imported both your gifs into ps and converted them into the timeline format. On one of the gifs, right click the gif layer in the layer panel > duplicate layer > select the canvas of the gif you’d like to blend the gif with. On the canvas you just copied your second gif to, you can now drag the two layers around the on the canvas to get your desired positioning. On the top gif apply a layer mask. This can be found in your layers panel at the bottom, and is indicated by the white rectangle with the circle. Next, make sure you select the mask in the layer panel (it will show up as a white rectangle on the layer you applied the mask). Grab your paintbrush tool and make sure your color is set to black. Now you can effectively ‘erase’ the part of the top gif you don’t want to show anymore. I recommend setting your brush hardness to 0% to get a smoother transition. You can also play with the opacity settings. If you want to add back in a part you erased, just switch to a white paintbrush and you will be able to undo what you had just ‘erased’ with the black. When you merge the gifs, they will play the same number of frames. This means your blended gif length is limited by the gif with the fewer number of frames. You can move around your timeline layer and shorten the included portion by dragging either end of the timeline layer in until you get both gifs to play the parts you want.

CAPTIONS/SUBTITLES

I often get asked about my subtitle font/styling settings. Personally I find the best fonts for subtitles are calibri and arial. I use calibri with the following settings: 12-14px, bold italic plus faux bold, 1px black stroke (optional: drop shadow set to ‘multiply’ at around 85% opacity), and tracking (VA) set to 75. If you would like your subtitles to fade-in or fade-out you can apply the ‘fade effect’. Locate the b/w square icon in your timeline panel. Select fade and drag it onto your text layer in your timeline. You can then right click on the wedge shape to adjust your fade duration. I usually use 0.35s. If you drag and drop the effect towards the beginning of your text you can get the fade-in effect. To get the fade-out, simply drag and drop your fade towards the end of your text layer.

SAVING/EXPORTING YOUR GIF

We’ve reached the final stretch! If you need to adjust your frame rate timing: you will need to revert your timeline to frames. To do this: 1) Navigate to the icon of 4 bars at the right of your timeline panel. Select convert frames > flatten frames into clips. 2) Navigate to the icon of 4 bars at the right of your timeline panel. Select convert frames > convert to frame animation > when promoted hit ’ok’. If at this point you see more than one frame in your timeline panel, delete the frames until only one is left. In the example below I would delete the first frame by hitting the trash icon from the timeline panel.

If there is only one frame, leave it as is. 3) Navigate to the icon of 4 bars at the right of your timeline panel. Select ‘make frames from layers’ You will most likely need to delete the first frame in your timeline panel (it won’t have your coloring). Sometimes ps adds in some ‘blank’ frames as well, delete those too. Now you can adjust your timing.

Once your timing is set: When you’re saving your gif, just keep in mind it must be under 10mb. Navigate to file > export > save for web. When it comes to your save settings I typically use either selective diffusion or adaptive diffusion. I also also occasionally use adaptive pattern (I find this is best for dark scenes without a lot of contrast). Set colors to 256, quality to bicubic and looping options to forever. If you want to preview your gif, hit the preview button in the bottom left. Otherwise, go ahead a hit ‘save’ and you’re DONE!

Is it probably too long again? Yes. Am I going to shorten it? Nope! Enjoy part 5 of care for the living!

Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3 || Part 4 Villain woke up on their mattress. For a moment they were confused, no idea where they were. Only moments ago they’d been on the battlefield. They sat up and hissed as wounds on their back started to burn with pain. Pain.. right.. the battle was more than a hundred years ago. The day of the curse, one of the few days they could still remember in their memory that was filled with gaps. No-one was able to remember everything in such a long life. Villain searched around, looking for any signs of the guards. Hero? Where did they take hero? They groaned as they got to their feet. Muscles burning, their body exhausted from all the power that had left. Villain’s head started to spin, but they had to know where hero was. They wanted to see what they had done, they wanted to say farewell. A guard walked past the doorway and villain screamed, trying to get their attention. “Please, I just.. I want to know.” The guard walked back, standing in the doorway. It was one of the two guards that had been there. The one that told villain that they weren’t hurting hero, but trying to save their life, although villain had never seen anybody do such a weird thing to an unmoving body. It had to be a modern thing, then. Something villain didn’t get.

The guard came in and villain pressed themselves back as far as they could. They didn’t want to be hurt, they just wanted to see hero. The guard’s expression softened at seeing villain’s fear. They didn’t say anything as they put hero’s mp-3 in front of the bars, for villain to pick up. “What.. what does that mean?” Villain asked confused, their eyes filled with tears. “Are they dead? Did I..” But the guard left without saying anything. Maybe they were being nice because villain just saw their loved one die before their eyes. It made sense, this guard had never been too mean to them. Villain leaned against the bars as they put the earphones in. They closed their eyes as they listened to the music. The instruments calming them down and taking them to another world. They thought about hero, how good they’d been for them. How much villain had loved their visits. Now they were alone again, exactly as the curse wanted. “H..hey villain, I..it’s mm..me.” Villain shot up, looked around surprised, searching for hero. The source of that shaking voice. But the room was empty as always. “I.. I hope the gg.guard.. gga..gave the mp-3 to you,” the voice continued. Villain nodded, yes they did. The guard did what hero asked them. “I just wanted... wanted to let yy.you know.. I’m okay.” Villain heard hero gasping for air and coughing. Hero moaned before they continued. “I.. I know I scared you. I just wo..woke up in the hh.hospital. Wanted to let you know... know I’m alright.” Villain smiled and held the Mp-3 close to their chest. They started to laugh, relieved at hearing hero’s voice. Knowing they were okay, at least alive. “The guards told me… Told how upset you were. It’s alright. I hope they didn’t hurt you much.” Villain shook their head even in this condition hero cared more about them. Villain heard sounds at the background they didn’t recognize. They heard how much trouble hero had with breathing, but they couldn’t stop smiling, knowing hero was alive. The audio stopped and villain wiped their tears away. Happy and relieved. They could hardly believe that this was real. But the mp-3 in their hands and the audio on it was everything they needed to know it was. Even if they didn’t completely understand all the modern things, they knew this was real. They could feel it. Weeks passed by and villain listened almost every day to the audio. The shadows hadn’t returned and villain hadn’t even felt a little bit of power swirl inside their body. The guards had been scared that it became worse after that big outburst, but nothing had happened in weeks. Villain heard footsteps nearing the cage. They opened their eyes and looked up at the person standing in front of the bars. The same guard that gave the mp-3 was walking with hero beside them. Villain got to their feet and reached a bit unsure for hero’s hand through the bars. “Good to finally see you in person again,” villain said, a blush spreading across their cheeks. “How are you feeling?” “I have felt better,” hero admitted. “but I’m home again and I managed to do a few things.” Hero gently squeezed villain’s hand. “I heard that your powers haven’t shown themselves in weeks.” Villain nodded, smiling brightly. “I haven’t even felt it. I can’t remember the last time I felt so peaceful.” They lowered their head, staring at their bare feet. “So.. what are we going to do now?” they asked quietly. “You scared the hell out of me last time, I don’t want that to happen ever again.” “First, I want this damn door to open,” hero said, “secondly, I want a big hug and maybe a kiss.” “No more kisses!” villain said, they immediately let hero’s hand go and took a step back, but hero already opened the door and pulled villain close. “Please, hero, I can’t do this,” villain protested, trying to pull themselves out of hero’s embrace. “And lastly, I want you to pack your things and take this lovely sweater.” Hero pushed the sweater in villain’s hands. “What do I need a sweater for? You know the guards take them off.” “No, they’re not, because you’re coming with me.” Villain froze. “Wait, what?” “You are coming home with me, so come on, pull that sweater over your head. You don’t want to be here any longer, do you?” Villain shook their head. They couldn’t leave, even if they wanted to, they would kill hundreds, no thousands of innocent people. “B.but the curse?” Hero took their hand and held it in front of villain’s face. “Do you see any shadows?” hero asked. “Have you seen even a little bit since I arrived?” Villain shook their head, no they hadn’t. “But that doesn’t mean anything, it’s just like the beginning.” Hero shook their head. “You always had some sort of smoke or shadows surrounding you when I was near and it became worse the more you loved me and the more you cared. At this moment you should care more than ever, scared that you might kill me, that you might hurt me again and that I won’t wake up, but look at you, no smoke to be seen. Not a single sign of the darkness.” Villain turned their hand a few times, staring at it in confusion. No smoke? Where did it go? Was it gone? They looked at hero again and back at their hands. “I don’t understand, how?” They looked at the guard. “I can g..go? Just like that? How do we know?” Hero kissed them on their lips. Villain wanted to pull away, squeezed their eyes shut waiting for the smoke to come back and push hero away from them. But hero held them close and nothing happened. Villain opened one eye to look. No smoke, hero was still there. They found themselves leaning into the gentle touch. “Here is your proof,” hero said as they pulled away. Villain stared at them, not knowing what they had to do. No idea what they should think. They looked at the guard again, waiting for some kind of answer, but they only nodded at the sweater in villain’s hands. “I haven’t been outside in a long time,” villain babbled. How would the outside world look after all those years? Would it really be alright? “172 years,” the guard said, “I found the journals. You have been in this cell for 172 years and before that, you wandered in the middle of nowhere for six more years until my ancestor found you and turned the village against you.” That means they had been cursed for 178 years, villain thought. The sweater was too big for their thin figure, but it was soft and villain loved that the sleeves were too long. It was comfortable and warm and it made them feel safer, knowing that they weren’t so exposed anymore. That they could finally cover the wounds and the scars and no-one would take it away anymore. It even smelled like hero. They were quiet on their way to hero’s house. Villain stared out of the window as hero drove, trying not to become too nauseated. They had never been in a car before and they couldn’t understand how hero could sit there so peacefully without feeling sick. But at the same time villain was too stunned by the world outside the car. The way the roads looked, the lights that shined everywhere, the people that walked on the streets, so peaceful, no sign of war. Villain looked at all the weird-looking buildings and wondered what hero’s house would look like. They sure missed a lot in all those years. Villain had fallen asleep in the car, snuggled up in their sweater. Hero gently touched their shoulder to wake them up as soon as they arrived. Villain was happy to see that the building wasn’t too big. Just a small house with a nice garden in front of it. Hero helped them out of the car and guided them around the house. Explaining where villain could find the things they needed and how some of the things worked. “I don’t know if you want a room for yourself or..” “I don’t want to be alone anymore,” villain interrupted, a flush crept up their face. “Good, that’s what I hoped for. Follow me.” Hero walked in front of them and opened the door of their room. Candles were burning and there were fresh flowers on the desk. The smell of the candles reached villain’s nose, lavender. It looked so cosy, with only the candles burning, spreading an orange light across the room. Villain lay down on the bed and hero came behind them, pulling them a little bit closer. Villain relaxed, feeling the heath of hero’s body against theirs. Laying like this for the first time, together with someone they loved and cared for. “You know what? He was wrong,” villain said quietly. Hero moved, laying their head on villain’s shoulder. “Who was wrong sweetie?” “The man who cursed me.” Villain rolled on their back so they could look hero in the eye. “He said I saw people as tools, but I never did. I cared too much. I hated the fights, I was far too young to be a commander. I never wanted anyone to die, I hated it.”Hero hugged them, quietly whispering an “I know.” Villain bit on their lower lip, thinking for a while. “I wonder how much I've changed in those years. This curse was playing games with my mind for years. It wants you to think in a certain way so you don't kill anymore, but the problem is that if I started to think like that, I would become someone I don't want to be. I hope I didn't become like that. Like the commander, that man saw in me.” Hero kissed their cheeks and villain closed their eyes, enjoying the touch. “You didn't,” hero whispered, “You care. You always did.” Villain pulled hero close, so they were laying on their chest. “Thank you,” villain whispered in their ear. “What for?” Hero’s arms were reassuring around villain as they answered. “For being pure of heart and stubborn of ass. You broke the curse.” Hero chuckled, their chest moving against villain’s. “So commander, any new orders for this stubborn ass?” hero grinned as they leaned above villain, eyes filled with sparks. “Only one,” villain said, their voice filled with need as they pulled hero closer. “Please kiss me.”

A COUPLE WEEKS AGO I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT

They'll edge gradually into a different business without realizing it. Once you start getting investors to commit, ask them to introduce you to other investors they respect. If you run out of ideas? The angels made a huge return on that investment, so they're happy. It's just 178 square miles at one end of it. And in addition to the concentration that comes from specialization, startup hubs are also markets. But only a bad VC fund would take that deal.

We'll have to worry about this, because there have been cases of startups that kept trying to raise $250k. It was by being benevolent that Ronco became so powerful. Usually you want to say and ad lib the individual sentences. But if you get an email from a partner you should try harder. The two words are pulling in opposite directions. Online, the answer seemed obvious.1 In this case we get three: the NPD Group, the creative director of GQ, and a large class of startups that need less than they used to. And indeed, the world and afterward they went wherever they could get in the open market. If audiences were willing to pay more for better content, why wasn't anyone already selling it to them? The reason it seems to matter more than that. So if it seems too good to be true to think you could grow a local silicon valley by giving startups $15-20k each like Y Combinator or individual angels, then 2 raise a few hundred thousand we can hire one or two using Python or Ruby. If Sarbanes-Oxley deters people like him from being CFOs of public companies, that's proof enough that it's broken.

The bar will be higher next time. If you're a founder in the middle of raising a round, the round is going to have more lines than the same program written in Basic is is going to have to be fired, and one version is much shorter. Some investors will let you email them a business plan, but you may lose a bunch of ads, glued together by just enough articles to make it easy to attract such money. On the other hand, the extra million dollars would give them a lot. And she too knows the creative director of GQ, and a good speaker uses that. Now I understand what she meant. Work in long stretches. If good design must do what the user needs, not simply what he says he wants. How do you see ideas that involve painful schleps.

Bencic certainly has the skills to disrupt Andreescu’s game, just as she disrupted the defending champion and No. 1 seed Naomi Osaka’s game in the fourth round, beating her for the third time this season.

“I practiced with her once in Toronto,” Andreescu said of her recent session with Bencic. “I found that she takes the ball really early. She likes to be very aggressive. She has a very good serve and she moves pretty well, too. So I’m going to do my best to just focus on myself mainly and just keep doing what I’m doing because I think my game is throwing off a lot of players.”

Andreescu is 7-0 against top 10 players this season and 13-3 in three-set matches. Ranked No. 178 at the end of last season, she is about to break into the top 10 and has not lost a completed match since March. That statistic is misleading because she missed significant playing time with a rotator cuff injury, including most of the clay-court season and all of the grass-court season.

She is on quite a roll again after winning the Rogers Cup in Toronto, her hometown. She prevailed in the final after Williams retired with a back injury when trailing by 3-1.

Andreescu’s form has fluctuated in New York, particularly in her last two matches, both played in the cavernous confines of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I just told myself to keep fighting and hope that I can switch things around,” Andreescu said.

The turning point came early in the second set, with Andreescu serving at 2-2 and 15-30. Mertens hit a shot deep into the corner. Andreescu took a huge swipe at the ball in extension and threw up a towering lob that might have met with resistance if the Ashe Stadium roof had not been open.

It landed, finally, on the opposite baseline and Andreescu ended up winning the point. Instead of facing two break points at 15-40, it was 30-30. She went on to hold serve and change the flow of the match, winning five straight games.

“Sometimes it just takes a point and a shot like that to change things around,” said her coach, Sylvain Bruneau, late Wednesday night, taking a quick break from answering his scores of new text messages.

“You wouldn’t believe how many of these I’m getting,” he said.

Bencic and her camp have been through something similar.

At age 17, when she reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 U.S. Open with a surprisingly sophisticated game, it looked as if deeper runs were right around the corner.

But plenty can knock a young prodigy back, which is a good reason to fight the urge to expect 15-year-old Coco Gauff or Andreescu to zoom straight to the top.

Bencic is wiser for the wait.

“People tend to think I’m older than I actually am,” she said.

“You take it for granted and then when you can’t play, you miss it so much,” she said. “I’m enjoying my tennis so much now.”

Though Vekic defeated her on clay at the French Open, Bencic is at her best with true bounces on hardcourts, where she can lock in her timing.

The biggest change in her game of late has been the serve. Fitter and stronger in the lower body, she is generating new power and penetration. She struck seven aces against Vekic and won 84 percent of her first-serve points.

The serve is also what separates Bencic’s game from that of her longtime mentor Martina Hingis, who won five Grand Slam singles titles in her teens only to be usurped by the rise of the Williams sisters in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Bencic, whose game was developed by Hingis’s mother and coach, Melanie Molitor, said that she lacked some of Hingis’s chess master’s qualities but possessed more power — a vital component to success in this era.

Sanchez, meanwhile, is working just as hard … possibly even harder. He comes in on a four-fight win streak with back-to-back submission choke victories. His win over former champion Daniel Straus cemented him as a top contender in the division and a subsequent win over former UFC fighter Sam Sicilia was the icing on that proverbial cake.

Sanchez recently chatted with MMAmania.com about finally getting his crack at a Bellator world title and how he plans to maximize this opportunity in Israel.

“Oh, you better believe it my man. This is a long time coming. I’ve waited patiently, worked very hard, and it’s time to go make the dream come true. I’m just gonna stop [Pitbull], man. I’m gonna put it on him, that’s it, that’s the best way I can put it.”

Given the chance to pick where, when and how he could win the fight over the course of five rounds, Sanchez instead said there would be plenty of moments to capitalize on.

“Yeah, I’m not a guy that says, ‘Ah man first round knockout’ or ‘this round submission, blah blah blah,’ you know? I’m gonna take what I see. I’m an opportunist. So whatever opportunity I have to go out there and put this man out, I will do it. I’m prepared to beat him up for five rounds, but I don’t think I’m going to have to — but if I have to, I will.”

Of course, Sanchez isn’t taking what Patricio Freire brings to the table lightly. In his four losses, two were split decisions, only one was a decision, and one was an injury (technical knockout). “Pitbull” is as tough and fearless as his nickname implies, but to Sanchez he’s a man and not a dog.

“I know he’s a great fighter, he’s obviously great everywhere, and got a lot of experience. That just doesn’t mean anything (though). He’s another human being, he’s another man like me, and I’m just excited to go out there and lay it all on him.”

Even though Freire has more wins by submission (11) than by knockout (nine) it’s his relentless in-your-face striking that fighters remember best … and fear the most.

“How does any boxer get ready to go out there and fight a heavy puncher you know — Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez? You know how does Mayweather get ready to fight any young kid ready to go out there and try to knock him out, you know? In combat sports people always think, ‘oh man he hits so hard.’ Everybody hits hard man! These little gloves? Anyone can put anyone out.”

Sanchez isn’t afraid of the “Pitbull” power, though. Maybe it’s the size disparity (5’9” to 5’5” plus a whopping 11” reach advantage) or maybe it’s just too big a moment for him to falter now.

“I’m not stupid. I fight smart and I’ll take the bull head on (by) the horns. For me it’s ‘the bull is stronger, but the matador is smarter.’ I live by that and I show it each and every time I go in there, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do at Bellator 209.”

A few fighters have groused that Sanchez jumped to the front of the line for a title shot after beating Sam Sicilia in April. The haters will just have to wait their turn.

“It is what it is, you know? I think this fight was inevitable. I think this is the fight Scott Coker and Rich Chou wanted to see. Of course Darrion (Caldwell) is great, (Aaron) Pico, everyone wants a piece of the the Pitbull Brothers, so to me it’s like, ‘whatever.’ Of course they’re great fighters (and) the Pitbull Brothers want to fight everybody, too. I’ve been in Bellator for five years now, so to me it doesn’t matter, I’m the one who got the fight.”

If they still complain Sanchez’ response is simple: CHECK THE RESUME. With wins over former champions like Marcos Galvao and Daniel Straus, his time is here and his time is now.

“Right now I’m the most deserving guy. I’m quiet, I’m humble, I work hard, and I earned this. I didn’t talk my way into this, I didn’t trash talk my way into this, I didn’t call anyone out into this. I just knew that I wanted the champion, and I asked for that (back) when it was Pitbull and Weichel. I said, ‘I want the winner.’ It just happened to be Pitbull — wouldn’t matter if it was Weichel.”

His confidence heading into Tel Aviv may not strike people as “quiet” or “humble,” but four quality wins in a row say he’s ready … and that “Pitbull” may soon be ready for non-title bouts.

“Once I go and take this man out, then anyone who called Pitbull out, they can fight Pitbull then.”

In closing, Sanchez doesn’t mind if anyone thinks this isn’t his time or should be someone else’s. He’s ready to seize the moment and the Featherweight world title.

“Truthfully, I guess people doubt me. I don’t get the respect I deserve from some people. That’s not saying from interviewers or commentators, or fans, but I guess it’s the fighters, you know? Or maybe it’s because it’s an intelligent fear. That’s why they don’t call me out or say my name. That’s smart of them I guess.”

If they want to win the belt after this weekend, they may not have a choice.

Hello friends. I hope this finds you well. How is your pet cat doing? Did she get fitted for that mouth guard yet? Good, that’ll help with the headaches. Nice. Sweet. Tell her I said hello.

Oh you wanna talk Diego Laxalt? Okay, I’m game. In less than twenty-four hours it appears that Leodini have made eye contact, courted, bedded, and signed a non-disclosure with the Genoan left-back and Uruguayan national, Diego Laxalt. This, was on no one’s radar before yesterday but much like the Samu signing, makes both tactical and economic sense with The Hair Buds (I can do better) using the always-welcome-here Gianluca Lapadula as a piece to drive the price down. The deal appears to be €14m with €4m in possible bonuses, with Genoa owing us Lapadula’s €11′s option, driving the price down to €4-7m. No word on the man’s paycheck. The responses to this transfer have been a lot more positive than Baka and Samu’s, which honestly means nothing to me since online Milan fans are uh... well, fickle, but I figured “Hey, you’re at home sick from work today, what else are you gonna do? Probably just check Twitter a million times waiting for Leodini to announce SMS.” So for those of you who don’t know much about Lax outside his awful hair (c’mon man, at least keep that shit tight), heres a lil’ primer.

History

Purchased by Walter Mazzarri’s Inter in 2013 from Uruguayan side Defensor, the braided bombshell would find himself immediately loaned out to Bologna, and then Sarri’s Empoli in successive seasons, failing to secure consistent playing time at either club. The third loan was the charm though with Inter renting him out to Genoa for 18 months and where, under the tutelage of current Atalanta wizard Gian Piero Gasperini, Laxalt would develop into the attacking left sided player that has piqued the interest of bigger clubs and would eventually convince Genoa to purchase outright for €5.8m and Cristian Ansaldi in 2016. His breakout season came in that 2015-16 campaign, which saw Genoa finish a respectable 11th, marshaling the left side of I Rossoblu defense while hitting the back of the net three times and providing four assists. Gasperini’s departure didn’t see Lax miss a beat, with the speedster one of the few bright spots in Ivan Juric’s (a vastly underrated coach, by the way) 3-man back setup. By now, Lax was attracting attention from bigger clubs for his deep driving runs, speed, and crosses, with Genoa rebuffing numerous attempts by English clubs over the past few transfer windows. At 25, coming off another impressive season, the time for Laxalt to jump into a deeper part of the pool has arrived.

What to expect

Well, let us begin with what a lot of us already know: the kid has wheels. Less than a day after adding more speed on the right with Samu, Leodini have markedly increased the possible pace on the left with the addition of Lax. My own personal recollections of watching him play at Genoa are the direct and uncompromising end-to-end runs, punctuated with accurate crosses or some nimble footwork opening up space for a shot or to find a teammate. He’s good at finding space and he’s a very comfortable and confident ball-carrier and his penetrating runs are a huge part of what put him on the radar of bigger clubs. Because of this ability to beat defenders with speed or dribbling, he can draw defenders in the attacking third, and depending on formation, could provide Calhanoglu with dangerous pockets of space to work his magic. Or, he can blast it from range with a respectable shot accuracy from outside the box (30%). Though his passing is certainly not his strongest attribute with a rather ho-hum 72% completion percentage, his ability to contribute more than just crosses makes him an exciting prospect on the wing or at left-back. Oh and he’s got a pretty first touch.

He’s also been praised for his intelligence both in possession and in defense. Offensively, as alluded to above, he often prefers to wait for the most sensible option when in possession up the pitch, and possesses decent vision for the position. Defensively, coming of a respectable World Cup campaign where he featured in three matches as an out-and-out left back on a four man line, he displayed impressive positioning, balancing both offensive and defensive duties against Russia and Portugal, before being sent home by eventually winners, France.

However, Lax does come with a few warning labels. For one, he’s spent pretty much his entire club career playing as a left-mid or left wing-back in Genoa’s counter-attacking 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 system. In many ways, his strengths reflect his role as the first touch on the counter, and his runs, confidence, and decision-making are in many ways byproducts of being tasked with that role. In a more possession based setup like Milan’s, and as one in which he may not need to start as deep, or conversely, need to play more conservatively as a left-back, there’s the chance we may experience hiccups in positioning or see him dribble himself into trouble, especially in our defensive third. He’s also not a terribly efficient passer with a 72% completion ratio, which again, for a team that has been trying to play more from the back the last two years, could present some problems.

Rockett’s final words

I like this move a lot even though I’m not sure where he fits in yet. As of right now, he’s a backup for the entire left side of a 4-3-3, as he can slot really anywhere down that side, top to bottom. He’s proficient enough in attack and certainly possessing the required pace to act as a winger. He is an adept enough defender to play left-back, and has both the experience and attributes to play as a left-mid, though it is here where I’d probably consider him only as a back-up. So even if the plan is for Rodriguez to stay, I think you see these braids a lot, albeit it in a few different roles. If we switch formations, again, he can act as both a winger or a very forward thinking left-back depending on the circumstances so much like Baka and Samu, there’s a bit of flexibility in where you can field him contingent on what is necessary, and I dig that a lot (I think we’re transitioning away from a 4-3-3 for the record). Hanging teammates out to dry and his passing worries me a bit, but for his current role and the price (€4-7m) I think this is a really smart piece of business.

Now with everything I just said, and while I joked yesterday that this made R.R. dispensable as a piece for Rabiot, for all you ready thinking that this is an upgrade to R.R. I’d advise you to consider one, how consistently above average to good Ric was last season. Two, that Ric’s attacking abilities were hamstrung by the ineptitude of the left side’s ability to attack. And three, the statistics paint a more mixed picture. Now, I understand Lax was playing at a counter-attacking Genoa that didn’t have the same pieces as Milan, but head-to-head [via: squawka]

Laxalt: 3 goals, 29% shot accuracy, 23 total chances created, 72% pass accuracy with a 17m pass average, and 43% duels won.

Rodriguez: 1 goal, 39% shot accuracy, 21 chances created, 87% pass accuracy with a 19m average, and 46% of duels won.

Splice that how you may, and there are things to consider for both players, but I think it may be just a little too bold to say that Laxalt is an upgrade, which I’m seeing a lot. However, for now, and in the future if we do change formations, I think this is a shrewd and smart piece of business by Leodini with the potential for a return much higher than the price.

The Rockets Love Launching 3s From Way Past The Line

DALLAS — The Houston Rockets, who at the moment seem to be the only team worthy of challenging the defending champion Warriors, just might be the NBA’s most unapologetic club.

The team set fire to the record books last season by launching more than 40 3-point attempts per night, which shattered their own record from 2014-15 and was over six 3s a night more than the team with the second-most attempts. Yet entering this campaign, reigning Coach of the Year Mike D’Antoni still wanted more, saying that Houston could realistically take 50 per game. Houston may not be quite that extreme so far, but they are on pace to become the first team in history to shoot more 3s than 2s — which is mind-boggling in its own right.

Yet for all the attention paid to how many 3s the Rockets are taking, there’s been less attention paid to where, exactly, the club is hoisting them from, and the positive difference it’s making for their offense even if the shots don’t all go in.

Going into their nationally televised matchup Friday night with the Pelicans, the Rockets were spotting up from a different zip code far more than any other team. Houston’s taken a whopping 178 three-point attempts from the 28-to-35 foot range, according to data from James Jackson of ESPN Stats & Information Group. For context, the teams right behind Houston on this list, Portland and Indiana, have taken just 108 and 107 attempts from this distance which is at least 4 feet behind the line. But after those three teams, no one else has even managed to crack 100 so far. This number is unusually high for the 3-point-obsessed Rockets, too: They’ve already taken more 3s from that range in 46 games this season than they took during last year’s entire 82-game slate.

Of course, it’s not like Houston — which entered Friday as the No. 2 seed, at 34-12 — is regularly canning these looks. The Rockets are connecting on just under 30 percent of their shots from that deep,1 a far cry from the 36 percent league-average mark from 3-point range in general.

Still, there are several reasons that those shots help the team even if they don’t go in, and just about all of those reasons stem from the spacing these long shots create. Chris Paul and James Harden certainly benefit from the extra room, and they already rank among the NBA’s best playmakers, even without the help.

Watch this pick-and-roll play against Utah, where Paul comes down and finds big man Clint Capela for a dunk. Jazz swingman Joe Johnson was prepared to help at the rim, but began scrambling back toward sharpshooter Ryan Anderson, even though he was standing nearly 30 feet from the basket. Johnson’s recognition that Anderson can make shots from that distance was enough to send him rushing away from Capela.

Capela, who’s in the middle of his best season and is currently leading the NBA in field-goal percentage, has been perhaps the biggest beneficiary of the additional spacing. Harden and Paul, two of the best no-look passers, have had a field day throwing him lobs (He’s second in the league in dunks). His average shot attempt this season is coming fewer than 2 feet from the basket.

“Having all that extra space definitely enhances Clint’s game,” said D’Antoni, who told me he gave a handful of players (namely Anderson, Harden and Eric Gordon) the green light last season to experiment with the longer 3-point tries.

The importance of Capela’s vertical floor-spacing role within the offense can’t be overstated. For starters, the Rockets run an NBA-high 62 direct2 pick-and-rolls per 100 possessions, according to Second Spectrum and NBA Advanced Stats, meaning he’s involved in dozens of scoring opportunities each game, with both Paul and Harden. One thing worth noting about this trio: Paul, Harden and Capela have led the Rockets to a 19-0 mark this season when all three suit up and play. The team is just 15-12 when one or more of them doesn’t play.

When I asked Paul what it’s like playing in an offense with so much space, he explained that he’s still learning to adjust to how open some of his teammates are. “My friends joke with me and tell me I’m a new player now, but it’s a cool way to play,” he told me. “Nobody argues about shots or anything. When you see us get frustrated, a lot of the time it’s because we’re not defending. The offense is free-flowing, and guys just let (long shots) go.”

Giving players like Paul and Harden more space to work with is almost cruel. A weak-side defender’s inability to help leaves primary stoppers on an island, and the star point guards are happy to take their chances with those matchups. The result so far: The Rockets go 1-on-1 more than any other NBA team and are the league’s most efficient isolation team by a wide margin.3 Similarly, Harden and Paul rank No. 1 and No. 2 in isolation efficiency among those who go 1-on-1 at least three times per contest. (Harden is somehow scoring nearly 53 percent of the time in iso scenarios to this point.)

But the isolation plays are just one way the extra spacing has helped Harden this year, after he showed himself to be perhaps the NBA’s best passer last season. The extra room has also enabled him to toy with defenses at times. In this first video of the Rockets playing against Sacramento, Harden draws three defenders at once — two of whom run into each other — and feeds the ball to Capela after the Kings fail to account for him in the paint. Less than two minutes later, knowing that the defense won’t make the same mistake and leave Capela open again, Harden makes it look as if he’s going to throw the ball back to his center but instead swings the ball to a wide-open Anderson, who’s waiting 5 feet above the top of the key.

In just those two plays, the Rockets illustrate how easily they can break a defense. If you pay too much attention to Harden or Paul, they’ll simply go over the top to Capela. Pay too much attention to someone cutting through the paint? There’s a good chance it’s going to cost you 3 points, given the caliber of shooters they have lining the perimeter. And it goes without saying that if you neglect Harden or Paul driving into the paint, Houston will either score or draw a shooting foul, which the Rockets do better than anyone.

All of this explains why Anderson likes to stand so far off the line: It forces the defender to make a choice: Am I going to come out and guard him up to 30 feet from the basket and be too far away to provide help on James or Paul, or do I want to be in position to guard against the drive and risk letting Anderson or Gordon get an open 3 from basically another county?

“I kind of like shooting it from that deep. Most times, no one wants to come out that far, so it feels kind of like a free throw, where there’s no pressure,” said Anderson, who was prodded by D’Antoni to start taking that shot based on what his coach had seen in shootarounds and practices. “And if they do hug up on me, like Harrison Barnes was doing tonight, all it does is leave room for James and Chris.” (Harden finished Wednesday’s game with 25 points, 13 assists and one turnover.)

You might think this sort of dilemma might send a defense scrambling, but opposing teams sometimes treat the court like a minefield: Often they’re a bit too confused about who they should shade toward and wind up unwilling to make a definitive step in any direction. Houston’s opponents move at the league’s seventh-slowest rate on defense, according to STATS SportVU. On the flip side, the Rockets know exactly what they want to do when they have an open look, regardless of how far away they may be from the basket.

“They’re really comfortable out there,” D’Antoni said of his players, who get more wide-open 3s per game than any other team. “If it’s just as comfortable [as a shorter 3], why not shoot it? I’m willing to live with that.”
