18th century/Rococo/1700s fashion explained by a fashion history lover.
Let's start with 1700-1709. The century had just started, so the styles still looked quite Baroque. The womens fashion was a bit simple. The hair was not quite as big as what we think of when we think of the 18th century, the hair was long and sometimes powdered, the skirts were not that wide, they were quite narrow, but they were starting to get wider, the sleeves were wide and frilly at the cuff, the neckline was a bit triangular, and the bodice had a low waistline and would not push the breasts up, unlike later in the century.
The men's fashion, unlike women's fashion, was extravagant in every way. Most men wore wigs, because extremely big, long and curly hair was very fashionable at the time, most men would powder their hair or wig white, the coats were long, and the sleeves were quite big, and frilly at the cuff, the collars were long, the pants werent tight yet, and around this time you can see that men wore longer heels.
The next one is gonna be 1740s. During this time the fashion was starting to become more rococo, the women's hair had become flat, but powdered, braided and heavily decorated, bonnets as we know them today began to appear, the skirts were very wide and almost square in shape, the sleeves were short but puffy, usually only frilly at the cuff, and the bodices which were now highly decorated, still had a low waistline, but this time they pushed the breasts up, and the neckline was a bit square.
The men's fashion was still very extravagant, but this time, it was at the same level as the women's fashion. The hairstyles became shorter, curly bobs with a pigtail at the back were now the look, and almost every man powdered their hair, the coats were still long, the sleeves sleeves were still quite big and had frilly sleeve cuffs, but the collars began to get smaller and tighter, the waiscoats were long, peaking through the overcoats, and the pants were even tighter than before.
During the 1790s, there were a lot of styles. During this time, big hair was in fashion, but also small hair, so some women wore their hair puffy and powdered, while other women wore their natural hair, the waistline had gotten higher, the neckline was now triangular again with some frill, the sleeves were usually very tight, sometimes with a little bit of frill, and the skirts were quite narrow.
The men's fashion was even more versatile than the women's. Some men wore powdered wigs, while other men wore their natural hair, the coats were tight, the waistline of the coat was higher, but there was still a long tailcoat at the back, sometimes the waistcoat would peak out of the overcoat, the collars were usually big and frilly, the sleeves were tight, sometimes with a bit of frill at the cuffs, the pants were even tighter than before, and the heels were unfortunately replaced by boots and flat shoes with small buckles.

How did women manage to hide their gender at sea?
That is a really interesting thing when you consider that there were some who pretended to be men in order to be able to serve on a ship and even managed to remain undiscovered for a longer period of time. Certain circumstances played into their hands. For one thing, the crew, many of whom were boys or young men from about 9 to their mid-20s.Together with the clothing, which consisted of a loose shirt, a waiscoat or jacket, baggy trousers or petticoat breeches and a handkerchief around the neck, made it easy for the women to hide their curves. And since everyone wore their hair tied up long in a pigtail or ponytail, it wasn't very noticeable either. But what many had to do was, if their breasts were too big, to tie them flat so that they didn't stand out. So they were just mistaken for a young man in his teens or early twenties. Like Ann Johnson, the daughter of a shoemaker, who even served as Able Seaman in 1849. Her appearance was described as that of a handsome boy aged 16-17, even though she was already in her twenties.
Mary Ann Talbot (1778 - 1808) donned male clothes and enlisted as a sailor during the Napoleonic Wars; she was wounded in 1794 and later captured by the French. She returned to London in 1796 but the following year was seized by a pressgang, shown here, and was forced to reveal her gender (x)
A much bigger problem was the daily need to go to the toilet. Because these facilities were more than primitive on a ship and rather practical in nature, because if it was necessary, well, then they just peed over the railing or used a urinal. Otherwise the men went to the head. The area in the bow behind the figurehead that served as a toilet. Many probably always went to the head, but it is also known that some used a small tunnel made of horn or metal as an aid to avoid attracting attention.
You would think that the ladies would have one more thing that would expose them. Because a comrade who bled once a month for a good week was something unusual. But there are no notes in historical writings about it. According to historians today, there are three theories. One is that the women on board lived such ferociously active lives that, like modern athletes in training today, they may have ceased to have periods. In case of prepubescent girls, the hard life and poor diet could have delayed the onset of puberty for several years. Another theory is that so many seamen suffered from a range of diseases and ailments including piles and gonorrhea that they were not likely to comment on one of their number having bloodstained clothing on occasion.
Considering these points, it was quite possible for women to pretend to be men and hide their true gender in order to serve as sailors at sea.

And let's take a look shall we, Let's take a look at what's really happening to Kate during this scene because Simone Ashley's performance is so nuanced and beautiful, apparently I write essays on it now.
So this Kate, we know has been repressing what she wants since her father died, and if you wanna think about why she's done that and why she feels this responsibility I have a small (large) treatise on her relationship with Mary that sheds a bit of light on it.
Anthony, less than 24 hours before this, held her so close, and as good as admitted that he felt something, asked her to admit that she felt something too, asked her to deny what was between tham, and yes she didn't say what she felt, because Daphne walked in and she was I think still very confused about it, but look at it. Look at the way she leans her head against his and responds to his touch.

I wanna talk a little about Why this scene has me in such a chokehold. Why it's so important that it does come at the very end.
We're going under the cut because this is probably going to get long
Now if any of you have read any of my AUs you know that most every one of them has a scene like this. Offside most of all. I love Mary and kate's relationship and it's my absolute favourite Parent-child relationship in the Bridgerton series. Because they are mother and daughter by choice.
But with that choice comes the assumption or the feeling that one day, one day, one of them could choose not to have this relationship. Especially for Kate who, even in the book, craves belonging to something. Even though she keeps her emotions so tightly guarded, she wants to desperately to be loved.
And Mary loves her. Kate knows there's no difference in the way Mary treats her and Edwina, but there's a tiny voice in the back of her head that says If she chose to love you she could choose not to so easily. It's why we see this look on her face when Mary starts defending them all

Both of them, yes. Even though Corvus would be way more pragmatic about it. Give him something to eat or to drink with pumpkin spice in it and he would like it. But asking for it specifically? No.
Luscinia would want to try it just for the sake of it and would mix it together herself. From there we have two options: if she succeeds, she will get addicted (atleast for a few weeks) and put it in literally everything. If she screws up, she will be frustrated and probably repeats the same next year.
Day 4 : Are your MCs more likely to prank or be pranked?
Luscinia is more likely to get pranked, Corvus definitively would prank himself.
Did they get in fights because of that? Oh yes.
