So he's for sure funny and charming. He's also extremely insightful and emotionally intelligent. Also, I think he's a very chill and non-judgmental person (but he will say judgmental things to people when he wants to hurt them even if he wholeheartedly doesn't care). And he's fiercely protective of those he cares about. Things often get dirty after some time but as long as nothing triggers his abusive side, he can be genuinely the best, most supportive friend/partner ever that has this special ability to make people just feel good. With Val it's always a high-risk but also high-reward game and that's what makes him so dangerous.

They're set up in a way where they all prop each other up. They all heavily rely on each other and their respective industries. Genuinely how successful and powerful would they be if they were on their own? How would they actually function if one of them was gone?

VELVETTE likely helps with their publicity and PR. Making sure they & their brands stay relevant and up to date with current trends and fashion and stuff ('cause while they both are pretty current, Vox and Val are from the 50s and 70s, there's bound to be this generational gap to a degree) I'd say more on her but there's only so much canon stuff we know/see about her.

VOX essentially is the salesman and tech guy out of the group. He sells their products and supplies them with top of the line equipment for their work and keeps their respective businesses/industries consistently moving forward. He basically keeps this all cohesive and organized as one unit operating together in sync. As well as making sure they all maintain the image Velvette likely spearheaded in making for them in the first place

VALENTINO I'd say helps keep all their employees "in line" (Like Vox saying he'll send that month's lowest earners Val's way so he can shoot them) and helps both Vox and Vel's industries by incorporating more sex appeal into them. Sex sells after all. Not to say Velvette and Vox aren't powerful in their own rights or can't hold their own but Val is the one we see brandishing weapons all the time and is easily the quickest to get physically violent out of the 3 of them. Like if they wanted someone dead Val probably would want to take care of that personally meanwhile I just get the vibe Vox and Vel would rather just save their time/energy and just get someone else to do it for them (unless it's obviously a personal thing like Vox's rivalry with Alastor)

Book recommendations: queer adult fantasy romance

This is a relatively new genre. Before, pretty much all YA fantasy books are heavy on the romance, but that's becoming more popular in adult, creating fantasy romance as a genre. I read mostly queer fantasy romance. Unfortunately, there aren't many traditionally published ones yet, I think the top rowin the left picture is all of them (if there are any I didn't know of, please let met know). I've excluded sci-fi romance for this post (which is why Winter's Orbit isn't here).

In indie books, I think there are some more, but I'm not super familiar with the indie market. The bottom three in the left picture are all indie books that also come in paperback (many are ebook only and I don't have an ereader). Most of these books I have talked about before but not all of them.

A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland

This is a prince/bodyguard romance set in a kingdom inspired by the Ottoman empire. Kadou is the queen's younger brother, and after a mistake puts him in a bad situation with his sister and the body father of her child, he has to help her uncover a conspiracy to do with forged money.

He gets a new bodyguard, which in this case has both the task of being a guard and being a personal attendant. Evemer hates Kadou at first. He's very duty bound and thinks Kadou does not take his duties as prince seriously.

But they will have to trust each other if they want to get to the bottom of that forged money conspiracy.

Evemer is a very stoic guy. He doesn't talk much. He can go entire days only saying 'Yes, my prince' 'no, my prince' or simply 'my prince' when he tries to convey he is annoyed or disagrees.

Kadou has very well written anxiety, and deals with this in numerous ways, including at first drinking far too much wine to dull his fears. Evemer is at first very judgemental, but over time he comes to understand Kadou better.

There's lots of discussion of ethics in this book, partially to establish how a relationship between them could happen without there being a power imbalance because of it.

Also by this author: several self published books, in 2024 comes their next trad published book, Running Close to the Wind, which is a queer pirate book pitches as Our Flag Means Death x Six of Crows

A Marvellous Light & a Restless Truth by Freya Marske I've already talked about several time

And yet I'm going to do it again. I love the each book features a different couple structure and I'd love to see this more often. It's a great way to have many different major characters but also give all of them their moment to shine and have properly development instead of trying to balance three romances in the same book.

The overarching plot in the trilogy has to do with the conspiracy Robin and Edwin begin to uncover in the first book, something that threatens all magicians of england.

A Marvellous Light features a himbo x librarian m/m couple. They're the softest, sweetest couple of the three in the trilogy to be sure, and I'm planning to reread soon.

A Restless Truth features a sapphic rake x wallflower couple. They're both very chaotic, and I love Maud's energy, as well as the whole sexual awakening arc she has in here, which is so funny.

The third as of yet unpublished book is a Power Unbound, featuring a couple that I think is grump x sunshine but in a asshole x asshole way and it sounds like it's going to be amazing so definitely keep an eye out for that one coming November.

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

This is one I don't think I've talked about before. Before reading this, definitely check the content warnings. There's a pretty graphic rape scene very early in the book, as well as several moments of suicidal ideation. That said, this is a healing story, and the character this happens to is doing a lot better when the story ends.

Vel is a prince who ends up in an arranged marriage to a noble girl from a different kingdom. When his preference for men is revealed in a pretty awful way, his family is ready to disown him. But the envoy of his betrothed's family had a better idea, marry his former intended's brother instead.

But before Vel arrives at the castle of his betrothed, he is attacked and nearly killed by assassins who clearly do not want his marriage to take place.

When attacks keep happening after Vel and Cae have gotten married, they will have to rely on each other to figure out what's going.

I love queer arranged marriages in stories, like in Winter's Orbit, so I was super excited when I first found out about this book. This book ends with everything wrapped up, but there is a sequel coming out this December. Unfortunately, that's still pretty far away, but there has been a cover reveal and blurb. The sequel will feature the same main characters.

Then to the indie books

Prince of the Sorrows and Lord of Silver Ashes

These are the first two books in the Rowan Blood series, which the author intends to be an eight book series in total. But since it's an indie series and the author is a pretty fast writer, they come pretty fast after one another. The first one came out last March, and the second one October, and the author released a different book this February. The next book in this series is schedule for late spring somewhere.

This series is set in a fae world, with a parallel historical human world we don't see much of.

Saffron is a beantighe, which is a human servant who is raised in the fae world after his parents made a deal with the fae. His patron sends all these children back to the human world once they become too old, but Saffron wants nothing more to stay in the fae world. To do that, he'll need an academic endorsement from a fae so he can stay and study.

When he accidentally finds out the true name of prince Cylvan, the two strike a deal, Saffron will help him find a way to remove the power on his true name, and Cylvan will give Saffron an endorsement. The only problem is, Saffron has no clue what he's doing and barely taught himself to read.

In the meantime, beantighes are getting killed one after another by a mysterious person known as "the wolf" and it will be up to Saffron to stop the killer, because no one else will.

The first book ends on a cliffhanger, but the second is a bit more wrapped up so I'm not sure what's going to happen in the next book since there will definitely be more. Fortunately, the wait is not super long, but the release date and covers are released much later than for trad publishing

Last is the Fox & the Dryad by Kellen Graves

This book is set in the same world as the Rowan Blood series, but it is a standalone in the modern time period.

Briar is a ballet dancer, and while he enchants many people on the stage, he cannot get the attention of the one person they really want to notice them. So they strike a deal with a fae lady, if he can perform one perfect dance she'll make him the most enchanting thing on two legs. Of course, a dance is never perfect and now he's stuck dancing for the fae lady whenever she asks him too, despite him getting worn out and injured from it.

Malric is the son of said fae lady and used to be a dancer himself. All his siblings are artists and their mother abuses their talents to entertain people at her revels, all at their cost. Malric left, but he finds out his mother struck a deal with Briar, who is now his replacement. Malric wants to rescue Briar, and tries to help him posing as his new dance teacher in the human world as well as a mysterious masked fey lord at the revels. But then he starts developing feelings for Briar, and he has to ask himself if what he's doing is really helping him.

This book takes place a lot more in the human world than the main Rowan Blood series, which ballet playing a big role which I think was done really well. Briar is a masc enby and uses he/they pronouns, and use alters through the book. I think this is the author's best book so far and if you're not looking to get invested in a long unfinished series yet I would try this one first and maybe start Rowan Blood afterwards.

Velvet doesn't even want me to do anything today and I haven't seen Y/N yet today so he's probably still asleep..or doing something foolish, you never really know with that guy.Y'know, I could go talk to the troll...oh what's his name..? Do trolls have a name..? Oh! Flower? I think that's his name! Flower! I'll go talk to him.

••••••3rd person PoV:Veneer walks into the studio room to talk to Floyd when he sees that Floyd is in fact, not there. The whole diamond perfume bottle is gone actually! The troll Veneer trollnapped has been double trollnapped!

••••••Veneer's PoV:Sh*t...oh no...Vel's gonna kill me when she finds out Flower is missing! What do I do? What do I do? Aaaahhh.

••••••3rd person PoV:Veneer starts running around looking for "Flower" and yelling "Flower, where are you?" . Everyone in the building assumes he either lost his mind or is looking for flour for baking, not that they've ever seen him bake, but who knows what those twins get up to in their free time? I mean, their little brother bakes so who's to say the older siblings don't?

••••••Veneer's PoV: I still haven't found that dang troll! What do I dooo? Ughhh!I walk past my little brother's room to hear him talking to someone, maybe he's in a phone call...but I like to know who he's talking to because he's ended up talking to some real strange people without knowing it thanks to me and Vel bringing him to put shows. I kind of feel bad about it so I try to protect him where I can while still letting him have fun.I stand just outside Y/N's bedroom door, which he's conveniently left open. I'm just out of view from where his bed is. I don't understand why he wanted such a small room actually, he just insisted on it, saying it was more cozy or something? Maybe it is, but I'm not interested in finding out.Anyway, I stand outside his room and listen quietly to hear who he's talking to.It's that troll! I recognize that voice! What's he doing talking to my little brother!? What was Y/N doing in the studio? ...what has that troll told him..? If he knows what me and Vel did will he still love us...?I start to get worried and lean against the wall, sliding down it until I get to the floor. It's really hitting me now just how bad everything we did to that troll and everyone else is. I knew it was bad, but now that I'm worrying my little brother might never want to talk to me again...I don't know...it just really solidifies how bad of a person I've become just to make Velvet happy...

••••••Earlier in the dayY/N's PoV:I was just wondering around the mansion, it's early morning and I woke up before everyone else, as per usual. It's winter break so I don't have to go to school, but I'm still stuck on that schedule for waking up at 5, which is annoying because I was really hoping to sleep in. My older siblings are so lucky! They're famous so they don't have to go to school right now, they make so much money off their music that it doesn't matter what else they do.I remember them always being really bad singers...I guess maybe they took voice lessons? I vaguely remember Veneer saying something about that...I wish the would have asked me to sing with them but I guess that would have thrown off the twins gimmick if their little brother is also with them. I'm a great singer...I did choir for years...I've sung on stages for crowds many times...I can even play a few instruments...maybe I should just make my own music career?Actually, that'd be something to do with my morning since no one's awake to tell me not to...I can use their studio! I don't think I'll actually become famous, but it might just be fun to play with the equipment and pretend I'm a famous singer like Velvet and Veneer!

••••••3rd person PoV:Y/N starts walking to the recording studio. Normally Velvet or Veneer would make him leave but since they're both asleep no one's there to him from just going in, except maybe a lock? But Y/N doesn't believe either sibling is attentive enough to actually lock a door.

••••••Y/N PoV:I slowly push open the studio door, trying to be quiet just in case Crimp hears me and goes to wake the twins up.Once inside the room the first thing I notice is this diamond perfume bottle with this little blue thing in it, it seems alive.I walk over to it and pick up the perfume bottle, the thing inside groans, I feel bad for it and set it down."Sorry...did I hurt you..?" I ask shyly, feeling bad that I upset whatever it was.The blue thing looked shocked at my apology and shook it's head, "no, no, who...who are you? I've never seen you before, it's usually just Velvet and Veneer and sometimes Crimp.""Oh..um..I'm Y/N, I'm Velvet and Veneer's little brother. Who are you? And why are you in a perfume bottle..?" I ask curiously, I'm rather confused by why my siblings have a tiny thing in a perfume bottle."I'm Floyd, it's nice to meet you, Y/N. I don't know how you're gonna take this or if you'll even believe me, but your siblings have been keeping me in this perfume bottle and using my talent so they can sing! It's...kinda killing me..." He said nervous for my reaction.I'm upset that my siblings would go that care but not surprised either, I figure it's more Velvet's doing than Veneer's as she tends to push him around a lot, he actually kind of seems scared of her...I wonder what she does to him when I'm not around if she also does things like this to tiny blue men... actually...that's a weird looking man...I should ask him what he is."What...what are you..?" I ask awkwardly, it's such a strange question to ask someone, but I wanted to know, he's something I've never seen before.He gives me a weird look before collecting himself and saying, "I'm a troll."I gave him a weird look but nodded afterwards like it was normal. I kind of remember Velvet saying something abouts trolls in a band called "BroZone" but maybe I'm delusional? Maybe I should just ask Floyd since he's here."Um...like...from BroZone..?" I ask with some suspicion that I'm correct.He responds," yeah, Floyd, from BroZone...that's me." "Sweet." I say casually before continuing, "so...my siblings trapped you in a perfume bottle and are kinda killing you, yeah?" Floyd nods. "Cool cool...well, not cool, but, like, I'm comprehending the situation, y'know? Why am I still talking...ahhh...um.." you looked at the clock seeing it's almost 10, the time when the twins wake up, so you panic and grab the perfume bottle and run to your room. You were in such a rush that when you got in there you didn't even close the door, you just hid under the blankets with Floyd."Sorry for just grabbing you...I hope you didn't get hurt..." You say worriedly."No no, I'm okay..." Floyd says, clearly a little shaken up."Ahh, what do we do? My siblings will be awake any minute! I'd just let you go but what if they see you and hurt you?..." She yells at me, not even realizing the door to Y/N's room is wide open.I give her a worried look and shush her, pointing at Y/N's room. She then groans and storms off, telling me that we'll talk about this later.I see Y/N slowly pop his head out of his room and look at me, he doenst look happy, he looks disgusted and maybe even a bit scared.He asks me, "why'd you do it..? Why are you hurting this troll..? If you couldn't sing you could have been a model or an actor...it's still not too late for that stuff...just stop hurting him..." He sounds so sad, so dissapinted in me.I'm supposed to be his older brother yet I'm the immature one who was so desperate for fame and money that I hurt an innocent troll..."I'm sorry for what I did to Flower...I... shouldn't have done it...it's too late to go back on it now...I know that...but...I can help you get him past Velvet and out of here...we'll talk more about what I did later, okay? The priority right now is to get Floyd to safety. Sound good, Y/N?" I say sincerely, I truely do feel bad, I'm just so afraid of Velvet, but seeing that look on my little brother's face...I just couldn't take it any longer.Y/N agrees without a second thought, he just wants Flower to be happy and free, I guess maybe they've become friends while Velvet and I were sleeping? Anyway, not the time for logistics! It's time to save this troll!I see Y/N make a weird face for a moment before looks at me and saying, "Flower?" In a very judgy tone.I was confused and responded, "t-the troll..?"Y/N rolls his eyes at me and sighs, "yup.. definately his name...""Well what's his name?" ••••••Floyd PoV:Dispite Velvet and Veneer's behavior their little brother is very kind hearted, he wanted to help me without a second thought. It's nice to know that some people aren't just power hungry succubi...I guess Veneer isn't either is he..? He's just the scared brother to Velvet. Still doenst make up for the fact that he joined in on Velvet's plan, but it does explain it...so though he's not completely off the hook in my mind, I don't hate him either.

••••••Veneer PoV:We're almost at the front door and we haven't ran into Velvet yet, this is good, maybe everything will go smoothly..? Damn it! Now that I thought that something's gonna- "Aaaa!!" I scream as I slip on soapy water in the hallway, falling onto my butt.Y/N laughs at me as he gracefully slides past me and over to the door, "haha! Should have taken ice skating with me as a child!" He opens the door and lets Floyd out of the perfume bottle."Bye bye, Floyd" Y/N waves sweetly at Floyd and he waves back. I also wave at Floyd and give him a shy smile, he nods at me as a thank you before saying to Y/N, "Thank you for saving me, I thought I was gonna die in that bottle...haha, goodbye, have a nice life you two!" He then starts walking away.Y/N says one final thing," I hope to meet again sometime!"Floyd responds by looking behind him and nodding with a smile before continuing on his way home.

••••••After Veneer and Nolan talk in Nolan's roomVeneer PoV:Me and my little brother talked about what happened, he still seems dissapinted in me but he understands why I did it. He doesn't seem to want to hold it against me but said he'll support Floyd if next time we see him he holds this over my head and honestly I agree with that, I deserve it.Y/N told me he's gonna talk to Velvet about it and that I don't have to join him if I'm too scared to, but that he's going to be giving Velvet and earful about this.Heh, for the youngest sibling, Y/N sure does act like our older brother.

I read it and omg it turned out amazing like the way you described Valentino’s and Velvette’s demon form has a chokehold on me I never really see people portray Velvette as an actual doll too much it’s mostly just a comment that’s it so you just going all out on that was so good and Valentino being the one with the cool head during this was nice but also fitting normally people would make Val a brainless idiot or a manipulative dick so him being just calm and strangely scary was a nice change but I can totally see him being more like a evil all his moves are calculated type overlord whenever someone he honestly cares about is at stake or hurt we really just need more found family vees but Vox literally just letting himself get kidnapped was such a pleasant surprise I didn’t expect myself to be so spot on about the fact Vox really has more control over the situation and don’t get me started on Alastor I just love the way you always give Vox and Alastor a muse x painter dynamic so this story was just the epitome of that trope but come on Alastor don’t be stingy let the vees go to y’all’s wedding another thing I love dramatic stories but it’s always so funny thinking what the other characters think like can you imagine Charlie’s confusion when Vel says he kidnapped Vox and he just like yeah I did lol Lucifer coming in to save Charlie he probably doesn’t really care about what’s happening let alone knows. Lucifer needing a reminder on who Velvette and Valentino are but recognizes Vox instantly gives off Adam not knowing who Alastor is but knows angel also I need to know what Charlie and Alastor talked about when he left the room cause I know nothings good gonna come out

haha thank you!! i based velvettes demon form off those like, old stories about those haunted dolls like annabelle and such. i think the dichotomy between a sinners regular and demon form is such an interesting concept to explore- i think personally that a sinner's demon form is their 'true' self-- since so many sinners and overlords especially wear a mask to hide their true faces, when they turn to their full demon form they shed that mask in a sense. from vals actions in masquerade, i developed this headcanon that val is the type of person who throws little tantrums for fun, but when he gets Really angry, his anger is cold and calculating more than anything. in that way, he's a lot like vox, except... well, vox is able to keep more of a lid on things most of the time because he Has To as the face of the vees. so yeah, i def agree with you! found family vees really does have my heart, they're the worst and they love each other <3

Is there any thoughts and musings around Vel and the other chosen of Bhaal (idk if you keep the choice of Torlin Silvershield or not!)

(I should probably note that I would prefer never to read Murder in Baldur's Gate and am basing my headcanons and understanding of the characters on their wiki page alone)

Running on the assumption that Bhaal returned at his original status of Intermediate Power before the end of the Second Sundering, and was capable of having more than one Chosen, I'd have that category include Torlin Silvershield, Rilsa Rael, Orin the Red and Vel himself, all empowered in 1482 DR. I guess it'd be hard to include Ulder and keep it canon compliant, but I do think it'd be funny for Vel to be aware of that Bhaal considered it - would Wyll or Ulder ever believe him? Probably not. But he remembers... The Dark Urge is described alternatively as Bhaal's avatar and his prophet, so I assume Vel was warned before hand and prepared for both Bhaal's return and the potential candidates for his chosen.

Vel's general opinion on the concept of other Chosen, regardless of who they are, is that they aren't any different from any other servant of his Father. They are favoured, and high ranking and he expects them to serve the interests of the church and their god above all other things - and answer to him. As Bhaal's walking avatar upon the mortal world, obviously he outranks them. His relationships remain personal and professional, regardless of his own opinion on them as a person. He does look down on Torlin and Rilsa a bit, because they're not true faithful, but whatever. It's not for him to question Bhaal's will in deciding who serves him... even if he is killing and mutilating Torlin in his mind every time he perceives him.

I'm thinking that both Torlin and Rilsa were allied to the Bhaalist cult before Bhaal's return, and lived their lives indirectly (even unknowingly) strengthening the deity and his temple.

Starting with Grand Duke Silvershield: Torlin would have told you that they were such very good chums, and he would've believed it. Vel would smile politely and tell you the same thing, while stabbing him in his mind. Growing up below the poverty line, then being homeless between the ages 8-15 and so desperate for food he was driven to discover the joys of cannibalism (unaware of the fact that he can't actually starve to death) has certainly not given him a chip on his shoulder about the rich and powerful, nor has he ever taken "eat the rich" literally. Nope.

Torlin ties in nicely to my headcanon about the Bhaalists running red rooms in the Undercellar; a headcanon slightly inspired by Pillars of Eternity, where there was a performing troupe doing literal snuff plays for depraved nobles who could hide behind their wealth and privilege. Torlin was introduced to Vel and Bhaal when he was young, visiting the Undercellar to bask in its bad reputation and look edgy and grown up, as teenagers do. Unlike some of his friends, Torlin's interest of the sick, evil crap that was rumoured to be happening down there was genuine. The Bhaalists use divination magic like detect thoughts and detect alignment in order to pick out potential clients/converts in the crowd (as well as trading notes with the Loviatans and the Sharessans (more discreetly) for who amongst their clientele really likes the bad stuff).

And they picked up on Torlin, and a nice heavily veiled person offered him a mask and asked him if he'd like to see a private show, because he seems like he'd really fit in with their exclusive clientele, and edgy, genuinely kind of fucked up teenage Toril agrees. (It's ok! the "guest actors" are all criminals, monsters, vagrants, adventurers... nobody "important.")

As far as Vel was concerned, Torlin was evidence that the world was an inherently terrible place when you look closely enough, and he was doing people a favour by sparing them from living in it.

And so the future Grand Duke grew up visiting red rooms and snuff plays and maintaining an interesting circle of friends, who he was happy to help make even more connections in government. He often mentioned during his little chats with Vel in his drawing room about a young man making waves amongst the halls of power, incredible knack for invention young Enver has... Vel made a note to keep an eye on him in case Gortash became somebody useful, or a hinderance, but mostly ignored this.

As far as my own canon goes, Torlin retained Gond as his patron deity, and was genuinely Master of the Hall of Wonder, but he certainly worshipped Bhaal through his actions and was a great friend to his temple. When he died, the temple saluted his memory during the Feast of the Moon that year - Vel was uncharacteristically enthusiastic about it.

Rilsa was a little more on Vel's level, though he'd loooong since given into depression and stopped giving a shit about anything except the pleasure Bhaal could give him. He lost her idealism and belief that getting rid of those in power would do anything at all to improve things before he hit 20, but hey, she's happy to work with and be sponsored by the shady assassins and we do so admire a creative butcher. He certainly wasn't above using his miserable childhood experiences and legitimate bitterness and dislike of the wealthy to play on her sympathies and get her to see him as an ally. If they'd met when he was young, he would've seen her as a genuine ally.

And Rilsa did see him as an ally, she maybe wasn't completely up to date on what her allies were (beyond one of those oddball cults who refuse to move on after their gods' deaths) but they were very useful. Any maybe they did tend to push her towards the more murderous options now and then... Rilsa maybe enjoyed killing and hurting the oppressive classes a little more than was healthy.

Where Torlin was an advantage in getting the temple connections and worshippers in the upper ranks, Rilsa was one of their best connections on the street level.

Rilsa, an idealist willing to take creative and "ruthless" measures in achieving her goals, often worked with the crazy murder cultists worshipping their dead god. She provided the Garden of Whispers for the Bhaalists to have their clandestine meetings in, when the Undercellar or the Undercity weren't ideal. The unofficial public forums in the Calim Jewel Emporium were useful for identifying sacrificial targets who had pissed everybody off so much that wouldn't make too many waves - some would even put you in public favour if you offed them.

The fact that she was buddies with Ettvard Needle and may have been able to sway his opinion before writing incriminating things about her allies certainly helped in making her allies fond of her.

Rilsa doesn't strike me as the type who'd work well in the temple for the long run (too much cosying up to nobility and preying on the poor and powerless), so I'd guess that Bhaal withdrew his power and revoked her Chosen status after the Sundering was done. She might still be an ally, if she's not aware of the Bhaalist's other friends.

Between Torlin pulling the strings in the halls of power, and Rilsa disrupting law enforcement, the two of them (unwittingly) managed to work together to secure Bhaalist holds on the watch and the Flaming Fist.

Ulder Ravenguard, obviously, never became a Chosen, but he could've been. He didn't become one, so Vel never paid him any attention, and post-game Vel and Bhaal aren't on speaking terms and Vel doesn't live in Baldur's Gate anymore, so it's not his problem. He still has to bite his tongue and fight to roll his eyes at the mention of the man and his virtuous nature.

Ulder remains blissfully oblivious to all this.

Orin would be in her own category, which would come with content warnings for horrible fucked up shit that comes from being raised in a cult with a fixation on keeping holy bloodlines "pure" that neither of them were happy about.

Mostly their relationship consisted of Vel ignoring her (he did not expect her to live to adulthood) and little Orin trying to get his attention/upstage him for Bhaal's attention and accidentally gaining a smidgeon of Vel's condescending respect/affection for her drive, skill and attitude (she doesn't care - die and acknowledge my worth, damn you!)

I'm so proud of her for stabbing him.

So I saw a post about this concept and thought it would make for a interesting ask. Magical damage, like a necromancers fingers slowly turning black and losing sensation or a wizard with lighting bolt scares across their arms. What dose it look like when Arnoss, Zarunpel, Sezashi and Dancing-Hands push their magic beyond what their bodies can handle?

I find this question funny because of all my characters you could have picked, those are probably the ones that can strain their magic the least! So instead, let's talk about why they don't really do that, and we'll touch on the question! But I do appreciate the effort of narrowing down your questions to some characters for the copy-paste when it comes to my inbox, it hasn't gone unnoticed.

Most of the magic for Arnoss and Zarunpel is passive.

Zarunpel's "blessing" from the Wilds might not even function under the same rules as traditional magic, it follows more narrative rules. It affects her body and hair in many ways, but when it comes to the limits of it, it often is more about what would make a better story. She's stronger than someone that looks like her should be, but depending on what she has to do, the exact degree to which this is true varies. As long as it's somewhat reasonable, in important situations she's often just strong enough or almost but not there, depending which tells a "better" story. Of course, she has no idea how that works.

As far as her spellcasting, it's mostly temporary protection spells, they're more likely to be cast too late or not last long enough than to hurt her when she overuses them. Which means she or whatever she's protecting gets hurt the way it otherwise would have been. When the Urborg panther living in her shadow gets "killed" or banished in some ways, Zarunpel can also be left without a shadow for a time while Vel reconstitutes.

Similarly, Arnoss's magic is mostly passive buffing and reinforcing his scales, when it is overstrained, he gets hurt the normal way. However, it also depends on how many people need and want his help nearby, and in some cases that can be overwhelming to feel during major disasters in populated areas. So many people needing help and he can't help all of them. And he's found that when he tries to help all of them in a city when it's not a disaster, he exhausts himself going from one to the other for hours and days, there's always something in large population centers.

Sezashi has a hard cap on the number of spells he can maintain at once, at four, represented by the floaty objects that orbit him. While some are harder to maintain than others (maintaining multiple charges of the same nature on someone else requires concentration and effort), the failure point is usually just that one or multiple of the spells slip and come back to him, and he probably isn't in a state to reuse them just yet. With that said, premature failure of magic that can manipulate sizes and create duplicates is generally not a good idea, plenty of unfortunate timings possible. Also duplicates that are ended in this way don't fuse back as cleanly to the original, which certainly causes headache and can cause the loss of memories the duplicate had.

Dancing-Hands's innate telekinesis can be overpowered or overwhelmed, but it's very difficult, and it generally doesn't strain the kitsune much to use. Using it on non-physical things is more relevant here. It only works on nonliving elements. Using it on eldrazis, even scions and briefly, made him feel sick and gave him headaches, and he couldn't sustain it for more than a few seconds. He rediscovered how to use it on magical effects not too long ago, and that has taken a lot more out of him, and could potentially replicate or redirect harmful effects to him if he's not careful. The telekinesis itself is invisible if not for its effects.

As far as his Kanji magic, well, he typically only uses ink, and on paper, but much more powerful and dangerous opportunities are possible when this type of magic is used with blood (or other living material) and on living tissue. Be it using his paper blade on himself or drawing with his own blood on paper, the result would be white paper and fur marred in reds. It's not something he'd ever want to do, but in theory, it's possible.

It’s not funny that Cassian and Melshi barely hugged, it’s clearly that Disney didn’t want to address the true nature of their relationship and made them look like bros lol We all know it would be different if it was a woman instead of Melshi (see the Rogue One ending)

the "TRUE" nature of their relationship sure jan like i wanted them to fuck as much as the next guy but they won't even let cinta and vel kiss and they're sharing a blanket, like established to be queer. tbf we haven't seen cassian actually be intimate (like kiss or whatever) anyone so i think that in all seriousness this might have been the most he's let someone in during the show's run so far.

and once again i do not consider a thing to be queer rep unless it's established in some way, unless it's intentional. so yes im disappointed but im also not surprised because i doubt they were intended to be boyfriends. i mean maybe someone ask tony gilroy about it or diego (duncan retweeted some melshi/cass thing lol hes a real one)

but there is truth to the fact that the show did give us one kiss so far and it was with fucking timm and bix, despite timm being horrible and bix having barely anything else to do :/

and also you're not wrong that jyn and cassian were almost certainly "allowed" (LOL) to be coded as romantic and endgame because they are mf. but fun fact: when jyn was being developed the writers were trying to go about her in a very gender neutral way. (@goingroguepod actually talks about this in more detail in one of the episodes - it was a very mid 2010s approach to writing women tbh). now I may have some issues with how they basically said she's a woman but we're writing her sort of gender blind(?) so that it's feminism or something. the thought process was very much a "man is default so basically gender blind is writing a man but as a woman" idk if i'm saying it right. but undoubtedly had they REALLY been writing jyn to be completely genderless and gender neutral (and by default because of the time more masculine) they wouldn't have been writing jyn and cassian's relationship as romantic from the jump.

and also there is a part of me that is cackling just because of the literal harassment i and other mainly wlw received for having the audacity to ship cassian with a woman (as well as with men but these slash shippers don't wanna let bi men be bi) and so it is a bit of petty schadenfreude on my part, but also lol i literally ship them too soooooo you're barking up the wrong tree
