Ranking The Umbrella Academy Seasons
1. Season 2- The plot was well executed, they nailed the tone, and everything great about this show from the beginning was improved upon. Namely, all of the characters were fantastic with great plotlines (several of whom were improvements from Season 1), the family dynamic was better, the romance was better, and they nailed the quirkiness of the show. Overall it was just peak Umbrella Academy.
2. Season 1- If you ask me, this was a great introduction to the series! I think the characters became a lot more enjoyable after this season (and their family dynamic became a little more both sweet and entertaining). The plot was also a little slow. That being said, there are several elements to Season 1 that I love and that aren’t present in the other two (namely Hazel and Cha-Cha, a few of the plotlines, and a slightly darker feel compared to the following Seasons). In the end it will always hold a special place in my heart.
3. Season 3- Honestly, I really enjoyed this season, it just wasn’t nearly as good as the other two. The plot was overstuffed, the pacing was a bit weird (filler episodes), some of the storylines weren’t as well thought out or fully realized and often quickly abandoned after being ‘solved’ or fixed or whatever. However, the family dynamic and the heart of the show remained from Season Two, ensuring that it was still a whole lot of fun (good not great). I also feel like I should add that a few of the special effects were noticeably subpar, and some of the dialogue was cornier than the first two seasons (although i appreciate the addition of heightened swearing). Overall it just didn’t flow as naturally.
Ultimately I still love this show, and I really hope Season 4 can regain it’s footing following some of the disappointments of Season 3!

Favourite Theatre Shows of 2023
My Favourite Theatre Shows of 2023
It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again, when I look back at my theatregoing year and look forward to the year to come (that’s coming soon in another post). Although 2023 has seen me see more shows than last year, I’ve still only seen about a third of the shows I’d see pre-lockdowns. I’m slowly getting back in the routine of planning ahead and booking theatre (which is something I’d…

So I just finished the first season of The Umbrella Academy, here my thoughts :) :
-Five x Dolores and Hazel x Agnès are the best relationships of this show and I take no criticisms.
-Still hating Luther x Allison, I was happy the last episodes didn't have the time to focus on their "romance" because of the apocalypse, the apocalypse is much more enjoyable to watch :)
-The lack of respect and recognition Vanya and Klaus get physically hurt me. At least Vanya gets to explore a little bit her relationship with Allison but Klaus is been constantly step on and ignored, it really hurt me :( especially when he is doing so much efforts for fight against his addiction and the other still considering he is just high and with nothing important to say.
-Vanya becomes emo and my brain goes brrrrrrr.
-I wasn't a fan of Luther character since the beginning but I was doing efforts because he is fucked up like the other. But I seriously hate is attitude, he always tries to control everything, makes bad decisions and, in particular the thing I hate the most, he always uses his superior force to get and do what he wants. It's awful. Even if he thinks he does the best for his family I think he is just kind of abusive. He doesn't take criticisms or let them choices and physically holds them back to go against his own will. The worst exemple is when he locks up Vanya in the cell and let her imprisoned even when the majority (Diego, Allison and Klaus) isn't OK with that and stopped them to free her multiple times until they have to give up. I truly hope his behavior will change in season 2 because for now I seriously consider he is one of the most important cause of Vanya's snap.
-I wasn't sad when Pogo die, sorry not sorry :)
-Is this motherfucker of Reggie is an alien?? I didn't understand his flashbacks.
-Ben's screen time YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH. I love Ben. When I first saw him I though he will be a kind of Jiminy Cricket for Klaus, and sometimes he is, but most of the time he just has the same chaotic energy 😂😂😂. The scene when Klaus thrown a bowling ball at him and he didn't catch it I swear his Pikachu chocked face was so funny. Now that the other FINALLY believe Klaus I hope to see him even more in season 2.
-Personal preference but I miss the old "faint of exhaustion" trope in this series. It's just on of my favorite and it usually work well with superpowers intrigues. It's maybe kinda bullshit to see Vanya, Klaus or Five doing insane things they never do before and just be like "I'm fine, what a piece of cake :)".
-I liked Patch, sad that she died.
-I hope more parallelisms between Five and the Comission's bitch, I think they can be a good illustration of "same beginning but different paths" .
-Good to see you dead Leonard/Harold, I will not miss you :)
-I still don't know how Ben died and I want answers!

film reviews: Uncle Vanya (1970, Andrey Konchalovskiy)
Synopsis: Serebryakov, a retired professor and his beautiful, much younger second wife Yelena, visit their country estate, which was originally his first wife’s, and which funds the couple’s urban lifestyle. Living on the estate are Sofya, Serebryakov’s daughter by his deceased first wife, and Vanya, Sofya’s maternal uncle, who together manage the estate, which makes barely enough money to pay for Serebryakov’s townhouse with very little over for Sofya and Vanya to live on. Also living on the estate are Vanya’s elderly mother; Sofya’s elderly nursemaid; Astrov, a doctor and family friend; and “Waffle”, a local impoverished landowner who stays on as a dependent of the family. Vanya and Astrov are both natural intellectuals and have long felt stifled by their rural lifestyle, which is monotonous; Vanya and his mother have long admired the older Serebryakov, who has held many lectures on art and philosophy over the years, and Astrov concerns himself with environmentalism, particularly forest management. Sofya is of marriageable age, but though intelligent is considered plain-looking, and with her meagre dowry her marriage prospects are negligible out in the countryside. When Serebryakov arrives on the estate for the first time in years, Vanya realizes that the professor is a man without true intellect or insight, an empty vessel which merely makes a lot of noise on subjects without truly understanding them. Thus precipitates the downfall of Vanya and the unhappiness of the rest of the family.
Review. Chekhov was a master of writing plays that are, on the surface, merely a collection of people together in a single setting, but are emotionally profound dramas that offer piercing psychological insight as they delve into the characters’ relationships through dialogue. The film is a fantastic adaptation of this Chekhov play, beautifully shot and fantastically acted, although the movie makes the strange choice of switching between sepia and color film without apparent reason. The film is slow and insightful, faithful to the heart of the play and to Chekhov in general. I recommend the film heartily; it can be watched on YouTube here.

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two-time Tony-winning dancer-extraordinaire Bebe Neuwirth (1958) is best known for her winning role as Velma Kelly in Chicago (1996) alongside her beloved Annie Reinking. After playing Velma off-and-on for some years, she then took on Roxie, and later Matron "Mama" Morton. Bebe has also won for Sweet Charity (1986), and is a two-time Emmy winner for, of course, Lilith in Cheers. Other credits include Here Lies Jenny (2004), Fosse (2001), and Cabaret (2024), which opened to glowing reviews for Bebe, and dismal reviews for basically everything else. In addition to her beloved stage, Bebe is a devoted cat-lover, and activist. She founded the Dancers' Resource program to provide support for injured and/or aging dancers.
Anika Noni Rose (1972) is a Tony-winning actress known for Caroline, or Change (2004), A Raisin in the Sun (2014), and the 2013 first workshop of Hamilton where she originated Angelica Schuyler. She is also known for being one of the iconic Dreamgirls in the 2006 film, as well as the voice of Tiana in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. In 2011, alongside Lea Salonga, she was named a certified, official, Disney Legend. Her latest Broadway show, Uncle Vanya, just opened this past week.

"Bebe Neuwirth, my beloved, I have at last seen you in Cabaret, and I am so sorry. You deserve a far better production, and a far better show social media team that recognizes your abundant talent and rave reviews. Please continue to post cat photos, because they bring me nothing but joy."

"Does Anika Noni Rose not have a pet? In my quest to get a photo of every Diva with their animal, she turned up empty, so...that's something. Also, her Vanya revival wasn't well-received, so that's two Divas in this poll in substandard revivals. Woo-hoo."

From what I've glimpsed from Andrew Scott and general theatre fandoms discourse, not giving the Olivier to Andrew this year would be similar to Bafta not nominating Tennant for Des in 2021. I.e. many people, including critics, loudly questioning this decision in the press and on socials. Sure, not even nominating DT was more unfair, because it's an acknowledgment among peers, even if not a win, and he wasn't given even that. But from how many people already virtually give the Olivier to Scott this year in advance, it feels it would be a similar shock and side eye action if he doesn't win.
Yes he’s got it completely locked and it would be shocking if he doesn’t win but that in itself was surprising because Vanya wasn’t universally well received (not just by me lol but also by major critics) so it’s funny to see that once awards season rolled around everyone was like “no that’s the best performance of the year for sure.” On the other hand, Sarah Snook looked like the clear front runner based on reviews and now I think she’s in a three way race with Sophie Okonedo and Sheridan Smith.

book review: little thieves by margaret owen
characters: i have found some of my new favorite characters. vanja is a fantastic mc, i love her voice and her growth. she is overflowing with emotion and so smart, but the kind of smart that bites her in the butt. she is so snarky and lovable and i love her skewed moral compass. AND shes aspec. i thought her companions were also incredibly compelling and complemented her and challenged her in various ways. and the low gods were fascinating and the villains were horrific. *chefs kiss*
relationships: vanja has like 3 foils for characters and they all are so lovely and unique in their own ways. the romantic relationship i did not think i was going to like but they got my onboard. this is also a book i would point to for those who love found family. sometimes i think it gets thrown around where it doesnt apply but you can feel the love here. and the dynamic between vanya and gisele? we love to see growth.
plot: incredibly fast paced and well thought out! thieves make for some of my favorite protagonists and stories so i loved seeing the fast paced action scenes and the scheming. i also am partial to fairy tale retellings, even ones i am not familiar with.
writing: i loved the mix of classic fantasy elements with modern day commentary. sometimes it can both me but owen masterfully intertwined them. i will say i did not care for the sections owen would tell the reader and not show but luckily those were not often.
themes: i would love to do a marxist reading of this book honestly. but also the theme of how past trauma effects people and how power is viewed and who decides who deserves what. . .i thought it was incredibly wise and well thought out.
favorite quotes: so so many but they are also so spoilery
"I've already met Death, she doesn't care if I'm pretty."
"The maid was learning to lie, you see, because she had learned the truth would not protect her."
"I know bravery is real because I see you choose it every day."
5 out of 5 stars, i adored it, if you love ya and fantasy and fairy tales, this is a must read!!

As much as I’m happy about us getting some amazing trans rep (from what I’ve heard from the reviews), I’m low-key pissed at the fandom and how they’ve been handling Viktor’s transition. I seem to have noticed a slight shift in the way people view Viktor, with a lot of people kind of infantilising him (did I use that word right 😭). A lot of people are starting to say stuff like “Omg he’s like the youngest sibling” which I get are meant as harmless jokes/comments, but I would like to remind you guys that Viktor is still a 30 year old, and Elliot Page (the actor who plays Viktor) is 35….
I get why some of you guys say that, since it’s really common for transmasc people to look younger because they usually have slightly more feminine features, HOWEVER this still doesn’t excuse it. Please treat transmasc people a little bit normally, cause I can gaurentee none of you guys would’ve said this about s1-s2 Viktor (who was known as Vanya at the time if you haven’t watched TUA which I’m assuming you have lol) no one would’ve been saying “omg Vanya is like the younger sister of the group” (also may I add that Klaus also exists, and if you really had to assign anyone as the “youngest sibling” KLAUS IS RIGHT THERE? HE LITERALLY HAS SO MUCH YOUNGER SIBLING ENERGY ISTG)
TL:DR : People infantilise (again, not sure if I’m using that right 💀) Viktor ever since it was revealed he was gonna come out as trans and it’s not a coincidence

About Umbrella Academy 3
Definitely my fave Five and Klaus chaotic interaction..lol xD
----
Okay...
What the heck...
Argh.. what kind of ending is that? 😂
.
.
.
My thoughts:
-I honestly think this season pretty cute and bubly for most of characters (looking at you Luther-Sloane, Diego-Lila and Reg), also less bloody and disturbing...
-The Sparrow Academy...not really that memorable tho..hahaha
-I love Klaus ever more!!! Great to see him in control to his own power (finally)..
-and of course FIVE!! aaaw how can you still be so charming even in his retirement? 😂😂😂
- Also Klaus and Five, they're bonding together??? Wow.. also..they carry this season..hahaha
- Diego... Finally your short hair is back!!! 😭 Looking good~~~ also I think I am starting to like him in this season..
-Good that Vanya/Viktor finally understand himself better now..tho feel sad with Harlan (and we got info about the original TUA siblings's mothers? Wow)
-Lila is actually pretty wise hahaha.. Didn't expect her to gives that advice about 'find the other focus' to Allison
-Aaand....well...Allison..
Hmmm..
I've conflicted feeling about her (since I always kinda dislike her since the first season), but...anyway..
She's always been a family person. I mean, in the first 2 seasons she always had her own 'other family' (Claire and Ray). But in this season, she was alone... While the other siblings finally started to getting their own families... Well, Luther-Sloane, Diego-Lila, Viktor-Harlan, Klaus-Reg (also a bit with his Aunt) and Ben, and Five with..his retirement time and his otherself (again lol).
And in the entire season she's basically becoming the trigger for the story to move on...(other than Five and Klaus ofc). And that's because she is in her lowest point..losing her own family and envies the other...
But she hurts a lot of her siblings.. especially Viktor and Luther...which I think..hmmm....too bad...
I think I like her version more when she's still with Ray.. (on season 2)
I wish there'll be season 4. Can't believe I waited for entire years and this series completely binged in just 2 days... Lol I need more 😂😂😂
((Just rambling..gonna adds more after more thoughts...maybe...))
Update:
I posted this review in wrong blog..omg...😂 But cannot easily copy and pasted it again.. Thus why I add the fanart here..because this account only for art related post..

Alright, almost a week later, here is my review of Vanya and the night I saw it. Autocorrect didn't let me type this on my phone in my grimy bunk bed and that cold got me good, but here are my thoughts! @itsathingialwayssay , @shegottosayit , @illfayted17 this might interest you. Be aware, there are spoilers for the play as well as the production behind the read more.
I saw the play on Monday September 25th, so my opinions are based on that evening, can’t say anything about other nights!
I’ll start with some negatives:
The theatre. Not so much the interior or the personnel, who are absolutely lovely, but why oh why did I have to hear the trains throughout the whole performance?! At first, I thought it was on purpose, with it being the Russian country side, so you might hear some trains here and there, but no, it’s Charing Cross that you hear. Also it’s freaking expensive, but we knew that.
Secondly, I was annoyed by the audience. It was a surprisingly large number of classic elderly theatre goers, who all seemed to enjoy themselves a lot (except for one guy who snored), some teenagers dragged there by their parents (or the promise of seeing Moriarty) and some assholes, like the ladies next to me. One came in after the first act, prosecco in hand, they whispered to each other during weird moments and generally seemed bored and/or disappointed. Which is their prerogative, you don’t have to like everything I do, but with these two it seemed… performative.
Also, about the standing ovations: I get Andrew’s critique, it’s dumb if you feel like you MUST do it, but the fact is, that in a theatre that small, you don’t get to see the person bowing, if you don’t stand up. So yeah, people stood up, I did too (because unlike in Austria where you clap for like 5 minutes if you DIDN’T like it and for like 30 if you did, in the UK they only come out to take a bow once or twice and I wanted to see him), but these two ladies just left with sourpuss faces.
Thirdly the cigarettes. I knew he was going to smoke on stage, what I wasn’t prepared for was them smelling this bad. They’re not normal cigarettes, they’re of the self-rolled, cheap student tobacco kind, that you only really use for blunts. They reeked. If you’re in the first few rows, I’m sorry.
Fourthly, I don’t know if the play really lent itself to a one man show. Don’t get me wrong, I loved what Simon did with it, the way he mostly cut out the love rivalry between Vanya and the doctor, and shifted the focus more on Helena was a great decision. It made the play more cohesive and boiled it down to its message quicker. Loved the modern language and the Britishisms (could have dealt without the name changes, no one is called Vanya in a play named Vanya) and it was truly laugh out loud funny at times, which is great, because I’m depressed enough without listening to depressed Russian people for a full show.
But still, while it all worked in the end, I think there are plays better suited for this treatment. I have spoken to shegottosayit about this, but I also think they kinda expected a familiarity with the play, because it helps you following the plot. I talked to two girls in the queue outside though and they weren’t familiar with the play and understood it well, so what do I know.
Which brings me to the great stuff. The whole thing starts with Andrew just wandering on stage, smiling into the audience, switching off our lights and turning them on on stage. As if to communicate, ok, we’re in the theatre, you’re here to watch a play, I am an actor doing that play, like we’re all in on a joke. He starts with the different characters and they all have an identifier. For example, Vanya has his sunglasses, Helena her chain, Sonya her dishrag and it’s all nice, haha, see the actor is using props, so you know who is who, it’s simple and harmless. That’s how he gets you. Because he doesn’t need them and over the course of the play he starts playing and fucking with them and it’s SO GOOD!
He doesn’t change his voice much between characters, except the two “funny” ones (and maybe Alexander), there he goes a bit into more comical registers, but for the main characters he pretty much uses the same voice. And you still can tell them apart! Because he changes posture, his body language, yes, his tone, but not his voice and the levels of masculinity and femininity (in a traditional sense), yet he never veers into camp or offensive (that aspect really fed into my unpopular opinion on the whole “straight actors in gay roles” discourse, which I will never talk about). It’s incredible to watch how fast and seamlessly he does that and how effortless too. That’s the craziest thing about watching him act, he makes it seem easy, as if it’s nothing to him.
And the faces. The theatre has opera binoculars you can rent for one pound, I forgot my glasses (mild myopia, objects further away get blurry after a long day, especially if they’re an actor I’m watching from the second to last row), so I was super glad to have them and look at his face close up. What did I see? He changes faces. I’ve seen him do it before, but in this it’s instantly and so quickly! I’m not gonna lie, it’s a bit creepy how he can change his facial shape somehow and go from sweet Sonya to hardened Ivan Vanya. It’s not just countenance or expressions, it’s something else and wow is it impressive! But a bit scary too once you think about it. ^^’
Also “zooming in” on him really cleared up something I’ve been wondering about ever since I’ve seen King Lear: One of Andrew’s biggest shortcomings on film can be that he sometimes comes across as too much, as a bit over the top. It is a theatre actor thing and he’s not the only one doing it (especially not in King Lear) and yes, that completely disappears live on stage. He acts for the whole house, but it always feels natural.
The one thing that felt a little bit forced was the singing in the end, he's right, he’s not a good singer (sorry!) and it took me out a little bit. The ending of Vanya is beautiful and heartfelt, I get what they wanted to achieve with him singing “If you go away”, it was a pause, a mood setter, but I think there are better ways to do this than through a musical interlude. That said, I saw A Little Life the other night, which is by the same production company, they made poor James Norton sing too and compared to him Andrew sings like an angel. So maybe I’m just a massive snob (hint: I am).
The other things that took me out a little were the sex scenes. Yeah, sex scenes in a one man play where the original play has none (at least not explicitly so). Damn, it’s been almost a week and my mind is still reeling from them. Did I like them? I have no fucking clue! I seriously need to talk to someone who didn’t have Andrew star in all her lonely sexy fantasies for the past 4 years, because I need to know how they affected someone with a normal, working brain who is not me.
I was torn between “wtf is going on” “JESUS HE TOOK HIS SHIRT OFF” “…you’re watching a dude make out with himself…” “…the sounds…” “don’t look at his naked back while he’s humping the stage, that’s rude, OH GOD YES LOOK AT HIS NAKED BACK, LOOK AT IT MOVE”. The second scene was even worse, because he’s standing up against a door, entangles his fucking impressive arms and moans as the lady while you see him move as the guy. Which was, yes, hotconfusingweird too, but I could have dealt with it, if he hadn’t mimed the penetration literally two seconds before and my brain just short-circuited and disappeared downstairs. The third confusingly hot thing happens in the end, when the doctor says his goodbyes. It’s actually a very good and touching scene, it has been set up that he’s falling into alcoholism and now that all his endeavours are nil, he downs more than half a bottle of vodka. We’ve all seen Andrew chug that beer in The Town and he does it here as well, but it takes a while and it’s so quiet in the theatre that you can hear him swallow and cry all the way through. Yeah. Yeah, I know.
Seriously though, there are more than one moment when the whole theatre is just stock-still. I mean, people laughed and reacted, again, one guy snored, I sighed a lot at Sonya (#ohlookitme), but in the important moments the theatre was dead quiet. Except for Charing Cross, of course.
When I left the theatre, my brain was buzzing and I walked out right into the backstage area. I read “backstage to the right” and was ready to walk to the right, even though no one was there. Except that stupid me HAD to ask the security, who I recognised from pics and the Cyrano backstage, if that was the way to the signings. And no, it wasn’t, that’s literally in front of the theatre (and honestly, probably why there are no selfies allowed this time, if they were, people would block that busy street for hours), I was walking towards the actual stage door. If I had had just one ounce of more self-confidence, I just could have kept on walking into the dressing rooms, God damnit!! (I’m kidding, I would never do that, and it would most likely get me banned for life, but still, it was a funny situation and that security was actually really nice and cool).
As for the signing, it’s a straight-forward affair, you line up, you move forwards, he signs your stuff, you move on (except if you’re an old lady, but more of that later). I soaked him in in all my manic brain overloaded happiness while waiting for my turn though, and the first thing I noticed was that he isn’t as short as people pretend he is. Yes, he wore some trainers with a thicker sole, but with them he wasn’t that much shorter than I am. Perfect height, for eye-contact, just saying.
Second thing was that he’s in the shape of his life, dear Lord! I always read him as wiry, which can look buff on screen, but no, he’s genuinely, proper buff. Those are some serious arms and just generally he’s wider than I would have expected. Other than that, he looks pretty much exactly like he does on screen. Some actors don’t, they’re either plainer or prettier (Anne-Marie Duff, she really was fucked over by some cruel form of unphotogenicness) in fact, the second night I went there I saw Sam Yates (he shook my hand :D) and he does not look like he does in pics for example. Andrew does. He has a fascinating and alive face and looks just like he did in that Vanity Fair video, except without the orange goo.
The first night I saw Simon Stephens coming out the stage door too and I literally hopped over to him, beaming like a loon. He and the people he was with were SO nice and so helpful, he signed my version of Vanya (the German edition) and I could actually voice my thoughts (which I couldn’t with Andrew) and tell him how much his interviews have helped me through the lockdowns and how I admire his writing, bla bla bla.
Anyway, I made him laugh, he shook my hand and said “it was a pleasure meeting you [widge’s real name]” in which moment my jaw literally did that looney tunes thing and dropped to my chest. Night was MADE, you don’t understand how much!
[Here I cut out a large chunk of extra thoughts to allow myself to post this in the tags]
Anyway, back to the old lady, she was the one who made Andrew laugh during the signing (LOVE that laugh), I passed her on the way back to the train and had to talk to her. She was a proper lady, dressed elegantly and she was the first damn person outside the theatre who understood my need to DISCUSS the play! Everyone else in the line was talking about other things, I had to PROCESS what had happened. She and her assistant were so cool, and she said she’d absolutely loved it and had a ton of other well thought through opinions on it. Big fan of her, no idea what her name is, but we all should get some cool older ladies to talk about theatre with, when our brains are buzzing with so many new impressions!
I aimlessly wandered on over the Thames after that, sat down in some red paint on the way, which made my jeans look interesting for the rest of the trip and had to just move for a while to cool down. I did go to the queue the next day too, just to be a little less tongue tied around Andrew (it did not work, whatsoever xD), but that was the day Joe Alwyn and a fox made an appearance, so it was totally worth it. As was the whole international camaraderie in the queue. Honestly, I’ve missed that, just people being excited about something together, I got hugged by a tiny Indian (?) girl and a Russian lady, all because we’re a bunch of excited nerds outside of theatre. It felt fucking great.

Pining starters, for Egg/Finno:
"I know it's silly to hold onto this hope, but my heart refuses to let go."
pining starters
It is easy to know when Aikanár, Egg, has had another 'heartbreak'. Findekáno knows the symptoms as well as the back of his own hand by now: without fail, Aikanár shall be waiting for him either outside Finwë's palace, or else outside his house (the weather for this option must be impeccably timed; it should be raining cats and dogs, for maximum dramatic effect), or else right inside his house -- Aikanár has long made Findekáno's home his own -- since the former was an elfling, in fact, visiting near every day, growing in frequency as he hit puberty and he quarreled more and more with Findaráto -- the dread teenage rebellious phase. During that phase, Aikanár had left much things in Finno's house, claimed one of the two guest rooms for his own -- and Finno knew better than to refute the imposition claim.
Today, it is a particularly bad heartbreak. Egg has chosen the second option: it is raining (rains are stupid in Tirion, so close to Valmar and Ezellohar; all they ever get is light drizzling. If Egg wanted true rains, he should have gone to Alqualondë, or Formenos, or one of the many towns far south or far north). Finno, who is sitting near his hearth reviewing papers from that morning's council, hears the tell-tale clack of a small stone against his window, and he sighs in exasperation fondly, abandoning his parchment and getting to his feet.
He opens his door, and there he finds Egg, lightly drenched under a sheen of moisture, clad in royal blue Telerin skirts, ropes of pearl necklaces and coral armbands. Egg's nose is red -- enough to rival Finno's prize-winner tomatoes, and his eyelids are equally crimson, puffy from dramatic weeping.
"Ai, Aikanár," Finno murmurs, stepping back, allowing his best friend into his home. Egg steps inside, shakes his head as if he is one of Turko's dogs, and sends water flying everywhere. Finno briefly eyes him in disgust as he wipes his own face, but there is no hostility there. This has been routine in their lives so much. It is simply how things are. "Who is it?"
"Manyariel," Egg says, and Finno remembers at once the Noldorin elleth -- proud in beauty and countenance, every bit an opportunistic one, eager to marry into the aristocracy. Good riddance, he thinks, but does not say. "I sundered with her." Egg sniffles, and he collapses onto one of Finno's couches. Opens his arms, expectant.
Finno closes the door, and he sits on Egg's lap. The now-taller elf hugs him like a stuffed plush toy, nosing into his back.
One, two, three-- Findekáno counts inside his head, and, exactly like clockwork, Egg begins the litany of 'mourning': how Manyariel was perfect for him; how he has always seen her as his wife, how he dreamed of little children with her dark hair, her cute cheeks, her---
Finno listens obligingly. He pets what he can reach of Aikanár's arms, and he thinks-- where has time gone? It seems a blink ago, he was helping Ingoldo with his spoilt, tantrummy second brother. Now, Aikanár is taller than he is, broad in the shoulders and chest, tanned, muscled. An over-cooked Vanya, as Turukáno often says in jest.
"I know it's silly to hold onto this hope, but my heart refuses to let go." Egg says as he finishes his litany of mourning, and Finno feels him rest his cheek against his nape.
The thing with Aikanár, Egg-- he falls in love easily, as if on a whim. He has had a string of 'great love affairs' now. Elleth, whom he claim shall be his wife, one after the next. Love eludes Aikanár as it had eluded Maitimo and himself. Perhaps, Maitimo once said, their match in the Music was in Endorë, and if so, they will all have to sail to the Hither Lands, looking for their destined wives.
Now, if only they could sail.
"You will be fine, Egg," Finno says. "This too shall pass. Manyariel was simply not--" "Not my match in the Music," Egg finishes for him.
Both of them end up chuckling at the spectacle of it: the routine heartbreaks of Egg, the routine acceptance of Finno as his person-to-go-to, the routine, the routine, the routine. Like clockwork. It is muscle memory now, Findekáno is sure.
He shakes his head. He taps Egg's arms, and Egg relinquishes his hold, and Findekáno stands, faces him, and he bends a little to plant a kiss on Aikanár's forehead.
"I love you, Finno," Egg chirps, leaning into the kiss. He returns it -- also routine, this -- cupping Finno by the cheeks and kissing where his dimples would be, if he smiled. "You are the most beautiful elf in all of Arda. Woah! My best friend is fairer than even Varda's stars! Woahhh! I am lucky!"
Findekáno smiles, the dimples Egg adores showing. "Now. I expect you shall be staying for supper. I have soy chicken. Let me just get you a towel so you can dry your curls."
