Researchers evaluate a new imaging technique for monitoring intermediate uveitis, a rare eye illness
Tumblr media
- By InnoNurse Staff -
Uveitis, a rare inflammatory eye condition, is responsible for approximately 5% to 10% of blindness worldwide. Intermediate uveitis is frequently associated with a long course of the disease and the necessity for immunosuppressive medication. Intermediate uveitis primarily causes inflammation of the vitreous body, although it can also reduce blood supply to the retina.

I don't know if anyone needs this, but: If you're experiencing nausea or other gastro symptoms on methotrexate and you already take folic acid, buy an OTC bottle of folic acid and take even more.
I went from 2.5 mg/week of folic acid to 7 mg and now 10 mg, and I'm amazed at how it has completely eliminated the constant nausea I've had for two years now—even though my blood test results have always shown that my folic acid levels are normal. The more I take the better I feel.

Your eye doctor will prescribe medication to relieve your pain and other symptoms. He or she may also treat the condition that's causing your uveitis, if known, or refer you to another medical specialist.

Uveitis Symptoms Causes & Treatment
Uveitis, also known as middle layer inflammation, is a condition in which the eye develops. The iris, the ciliary body, and the choroid make up this structure. They control light penetration, produce aqueous hormone (fluid filling up front parts), and supply blood and oxygen to the retina.
Uveitis may be caused by infection, an autoimmune disorder, or idiopathic (of unknown origin). Uveitis can cause eye pain, blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Uveitis can be treated with steroid eye drops/injections, oral medications, or surgery in the most severe cases.
If you suspect you might have uveitis, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Untreated, it can lead to vision loss and glaucoma.

What are the symptoms of Uveitis?
There are many symptoms associated with uveitis. They can vary depending on the cause. Nevertheless, there are some common symptoms and signs associated with this eye condition:
Eye pain
Eyes are red
Blurred vision
Photophobia - Sensitivity towards light
Floaters are small spots or specks that appear to float in your field of vision.
Vision loss or decreased vision
Headaches
Tearing or watering down the eyes
Eye irritation or discomfort
Uveitis can present in various stages. Some people may not have symptoms at all, and some inflammation may only be diagnosed during routine eye exams. Consult an eye doctor if you have any of these symptoms, or have concerns about your eyes health.
What is the treatment for Uveitis?
The treatment of uveitis depends on the severity, location and cause. The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation, alleviate symptoms, prevent complications, and preserve vision. The following are common treatments for uveitis:
Uveitis must be treated immediately to prevent complications and maintain vision. It is recommended that you have regular follow-up visits with your eye doctor to monitor the condition, adjust treatment, and report any changes.

It's hard for me to go out in public. More so lately because I'm in a worsening autistic burnout. This means I'm more sensitive to things like light, sound, people, etc. I'm not wearing a hat and pink glasses to be cool or disguise myself. Light is painful to my eyes. Not just because of autism. I also have glaucoma and since September have been dealing with an autoimmune condition causing iritis and episcleritis. If you happen to see me I'd appreciate it if you could please not comment on my red eyes or my hat and sunglasses. The sunglasses are pink because they're an FL-41 tint to help with migraines. I hate pink but they work. #autistic #autisticlife #iritis #uveitis #episcleritis #glaucoma #glaucomaawareness #autoimmunedisease #autoimmune #photophobia #autism #autismawareness #migraine #fl41glasses https://www.instagram.com/p/CmNscmKrrH-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ordering specific test in Uveitis – Avoiding a scattershot approach
--------
Ordering specific investigations in uveitis involves a systematic approach to identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment, with the initial evaluation typically including a comprehensive eye examination, detailed medical history, and assessment of symptoms, carefully analysing risk factors and clues to diagnosis.
This short discouraging the blunderbuss approach to ordering tests and taking into account both sensitivity (how well the presence of a disease is predicted by a test) and specificity (how well the absence of a disease is predicted by a test), targeting a golden ratio of minimal amount of tests for maximum amount of data (The analogous blunderbuss was a a 17th- century large-bored gun firing balls or slugs which scattered projectiles in a broad range but lacked subtlety and precision).
Specific investigations may be ordered based on the clinical presentation and suspected aetiology of uveitis. Common tests include blood work to assess for infectious or autoimmune diseases, such as full blood count (FBC/CBC), inflammatory markers such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), organ profile (LFT, U+E), Chest X-ray to look for TB or Sarcoidosis, Syphillis.
Other tests depend on the outcome of targeted history and examination, and include Serum ACE, Toxoplasma and Toxocara antibodies, HLA-A29, ANCA, ANA, Mantoux Test, Interferon Gamma Release Assay, Fundus Fluorescein Angiography, Indocyanine Green Angiography, Electrophysiology, CT Chest, CT Abdo/Pelvis, MRI Brain, Lumbar Puncture for CSF Studies, Conjunctival biopsies, Anterior chamber tap,  Biopsy of vitreous/choroid - In infectious uveitis cases, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of ocular fluids or serological tests for specific pathogens may be necessary
Sometimes doing routine immunological tests doesn’t really help as there are often weak positive anti-nuclear and other antibodies found in Uveitis which are not really interpretable, so
Tailor Those Investigations!

James Joyce and I got the same eye disease at 25.
Also, I dunk a lot on a Harvard English PhD for thinking he could make a medical diagnosis in Harper's magazine.
Also: why sexism is the reason we can't cure more diseases.

My Blind Dog
This week's post touches upon ableism in veterinary medicine as I talk about Finn, my mostly blind dog.
This post was inspired by a Twitter post about ableism in veterinary medicine and how people treat disabled animals, so CWs for discussions of ableism, medical treatments of a pet, eyeballs. For a little background, my dog Finn developed uveitis sometime between 2019 and 2020. Uveitis is inflammation of the interior chambers of the eye, and for most pets who develop it, there’s no known cause.…
