Two US Navy Seals declared dead after raid in Red Sea

Two US Navy Seals who went missing in the Gulf of Aden earlier this month during a raid on a ship carrying Iranian weapons were not found after an exhaustive search and their status was changed to dead, the military said on Sunday (21 January).

US military personnel were reported missing after boarding a ship during an 11 January operation off the coast of Somalia, US Central Command said on Sunday (21 January). Centcom Commander General Michael Erik Kurilla said in a statement:

We mourn the loss of our two Naval Special Warfare warriors, and we will forever honour their sacrifice and example. Our prayers are with the Seals’ families, friends, the US Navy, and the entire Special Operations community during this time.

Joint forces from the US, Spain and Japan have explored more than 21,000 square miles of ocean in search of the missing harbour seals, Centcom said in a statement.

US, South Korea, Japan hold military drills involving aircraft carrier

The US, South Korea and Japan held a planned joint naval exercise involving a US aircraft carrier to ensure preparedness for nuclear and missile threats from North Korea, South Korean media reported.

The drills, aimed at strengthening their joint capability to respond to threats from North Korea, are being conducted under a multi-year joint exercise plan developed after last year’s trilateral summit, South Korean naval officials said.

The aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and destroyers Howard, Russell and Daniel Inouye, as well as warships from Asian neighbours, took part in the two-day exercise, held since Thursday in international waters between South Korea and Japan. The South’s navy said in a statement:

The participating forces conducted anti-submarine warfare drills to improve their responses to North Korean underwater threats including from submarines and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
