Out of curiosity, is gijinka'd Lurien's mask covering his eye because its messed up, or is it just a really fancy/potentially magical monocle?

(as an aside, I adore your dreamer designs and the occasional other gijinka'd characters you do - it really helps sell that they come from different backgrounds rather than making everything look all samey)

In my little brain, his mask is covering multiple eyes on that side of his face. Why does he have lots of eyes? Because it seemed cool to me and I like to headcanon him as a dragonfly which are bugs that are known to have very good vision and reaction time to pair with it. As such his eyes on that side of his face serve the same purpose 😁

As to specifics on why he covers his eyes, its not really to do with appearances (i.e. in Hallownest, him having multiple eyes wouldn't be considered odd). The main reason would be to correct his vision. After all, being able to see clearly for miles in all directions out of one side of your face and not the other would be extremely disorientating and distracting. I imagine he does exercise all his eyes regularly anyway so he can adjust accordingly in the event the mask comes off (e.g. when he needs to super focus and react to everything happening around him) .

So to answer your question, the mask would be closest to a monocle in that he wears it to make his vision more manageable, but it's probably closer to an eyepatch with a hole in it to allow for one eye to look around so he can still maintain his depth perception.

I wrote a thing.

Holofernes Hollow

Prologue

The embers looked like fireflies, pouring out of the skeleton of the horticultural shop.

With his glasses crushed to dust somewhere inside and the new, aching black gulf on the right side of his vision, he could almost pretend that he was watching a theatrical lightshow. Any moment now, dancers would leap out with their faces made ethereal by golden masks and start leading the Midwinter Prayer.

But the stink of smoke digging into his skin and the heat of the flames baking the blood onto his cheek made the desire impossible to keep hold of. The roaring of the inferno echoed in his ears, drowning out the gathering crowd and ringing bells of the fire guild’s carriage.

At that moment, his knees buckled and the roof fell in.

He landed heavily, painfully, on the cobblestones, sparks showering his clothes. Distantly, he could feel them start to smolder through the thin cloth but lifting even a finger to stop it was unthinkable. Gravity had sunk its claws in and he couldn’t move, couldn’t remember how his aching muscles worked.

It was shockingly cold.

How could it be cold? He was burning. This close, he could see the tiny fires.

And suddenly he was on his feet, voices cracking by his head, hands slapping at his body. He cried out, just once, as somebody tightened a blanket around him. It itched and smelt so strongly of horses and burnt hair that he gagged on it.

No, the sheet smelt of horses. He smelt of burning.

Arms wrapped about his waist, around his chest, fingers bruising in his armpits, turning him firmly away from the blaze devouring the building. He sagged, but he wasn’t allowed to fall again, being half-carried and half-dragged further into the cold.

“Someone get a doctor!”

“We’re gonna need an apothecary too. The burns –“

“Are you an idiot? He is the apothecary!”

Nausea battered his guts, shivers wracking his body.

“Has anyone seen his old man? Is he still inside?”

The world spun around him, the sky and ground trapped in a bewildering dance. Da. Had he been there? He couldn’t remember. He couldn’t remember.

“His eye, oh my Lady, look at his eye!”

“Flastaff’s Night! How in the world –“

“Make way, make way, please. I need something to stop the bleeding…”

With almost polite disinterest, he watched as the tendrils of blackness stole across his vision, robbing the voices of the crowd and the bellow of the flames.

But even over the ringing of his ears, in those last seconds of consciousness, he was sure he could still hear Arland’s terrible, mocking laughter.

I spent like an hour drawing these with my finger on my phone in a moving car, just so I could properly articulate my Hollow Knight hot take:

Adult Ghost shouldn’t look like THK but with shorter horns just because they had similar looking shells when they were young. Hollow looks the way they do now because they were the only vessel to be “Fully Grown” and “Raised to prime form”

The entire point of the Godhome Ritual is to have a symbiotic relationship between the Seekers and their God, the seekers gaining a respite from their “silent minds” while their “godly focus” elevates an entity to their most powerful form, whether that means returning them to a state of former glory, or ascending them to an all new level of power. (possibly both in some cases?)

Additionally, when Ghost uses their Void abilities (most notably, Shade Cloak), the shape of their horns become slightly more exaggerated while they are briefly void.

Quid Pro Quo; I’d say it stands to reason that a “Fully grown” and “raised to prime form” version of Ghost, would be a much LESS exaggerated version of The Shade Lord.

To further my point, consider that young Hollow’s horns only have 2 prongs, but when fully grown, they have 3 and they don’t really resemble their original shape THAT much. Ghost’s horns are rounder than young THKs, so I’d say it’s also fair to assume they could become more curved than Hollows, as well as developing a 3rd prong like Hollow’s. All this could very well be interpreted as looking something like the shape of Shade Lords head.

TL:DR:

Adult Hollow Knight: Round, spindly, sad Soul baby.

Adult Ghost: Sharp, pointy, angey Void baby.
