Dream looked at the phone a third time, this time to see what the weather would be like at the beach. He really liked surfing and since he hadn't been surfing in a long time, he decided to go that same day.
He put on the black neoprene with green parts and on top of it the clothes for that day, he also prepared the spare clothes along with the towel for when he was going to return.
It didn't take long to get there, though by the time he got there, the weather changed drastically, making it dangerous to surf in that weather.
Dream didn't give it any importance, he would surf anyway bad weather or not, so he entered the water. The first few minutes that he was surfing, he did quite well, until there was a wave a couple of meters bigger than the others, which would be about 5-6 meters high.
Dream tried to get away from it with his surfboard, but it was impossible, the wave caught him, taking him to the farthest part of the sea, so much so that he was several miles away from the beach.
//
Several hours later he woke up stranded in the middle of the ocean, his surfboard the only lifeline. He got on the surfboard but when he felt his leg itching, he looked at it and saw that he had a wound from which a lot of blood was coming out, although not enough to bleed to death.
Of course, it did not seem like a good sign since it would attract a lot of sharks and that was something he didn’t want. He looked around in a panic, not wanting to run into one and become its meal.
A while passed and no shark seemed to be approaching, so he relaxed a bit. Big mistake. Something quite large and slimy wrapped around his leg and yanked him off his surfboard, starting to sink him deeper.
He tried to escape from the grip of the animal that was sinking him, but it was impossible, it seemed that it was glued like a squid. Dream began to panic, he needed to breathe, having been suddenly dragged into the water like that, he hadn't been able to catch enough air, so he almost couldn't take it anymore.
He finally reached his limit and instinctively tried to breathe, beginning to choke when instead of air, water began to enter his lungs. His vision began to dim, not noticing that the animal had suddenly released him, letting him sink in that same spot. Before passing out, he felt his cold surroundings turn hot.
//
Sapnap had only gone out for a swim to go around the ocean, what was not expected was that a giant squid was dragging a human to the bottom. Soon the human let out a lot of air, letting him know that he was beginning to choke.
He quickly approached the squid, biting down on the tentacle that held the human, swallowing the bite. He licked his lips, it had been a while since he had eaten squid. The animal noticed his hungry look and disappeared as fast as it could.
Sapnap just snorted, beginning to quickly separate the human from the tentacle. Sensing that the human was about to lose consciousness, he hurriedly put him into his mouth, closing it immediately as he pressed the human against his palate to swallow the water. Once he swallowed it, he placed his tongue in its normal position, the human lying placidly on top of it.
Sapnap panicked and swallowed him, hoping the muscles in his throat would tighten enough to force the water out of his lungs. Once inside his pouch, he began swimming towards a sea cave with air he knew.
He could feel how the human began to cough constantly, causing him to let out a sigh of relief, although that changed drastically when he gave a startled scream. He increased his speed, wanting to get to the cave as quickly as possible.
//
Dream began to cough, expelling all the water he had swallowed. When he finally stopped coughing he looked around, noticing the slimy, slippery walls of the space he was in. His eyes widened in fear as he realized where he was, giving a terrified scream.
A stomach. He was in a stomach... He began to hit the soft walls, not harming the being that had eaten him because of how weak he was, begging to be let out, although if he were an animal, his request would not be answered even in dreams.
"Please! Let me out! I don't want to die! Not yet… Not like this… Please…” He felt something gently pressing on him, as if trying to reassure him, but… that was impossible, right?
He tried to calm down by looking around, noticing that its stomach was glowing a soft shade of orange, preventing him from being completely in the dark. If he wasn't completely terrified, he'd admit that it looked pretty even.
The space he was in began to move and in the blink of an eye he was pushed up the throat, appearing in the mouth soon after. Dream was completely surprised, he really thought he was going to die, but during the time he was in the stomach nothing happened to him and apparently this creature had the intention of releasing him.
The mouth opened and instead of water entering as he thought it would, quite cool air entered. Looking at the entrance, he saw that there was a stone floor outside the mouth, so he began to crawl.
Once he was out of it, he slowly got up and turned around, giving a small yelp of surprise when he saw that what had eaten him was not an animal, but a giant mer.
"I'm glad you're okay, I really freaked out for a moment when you went limp on my tongue." said the mer with black hair and orange eyes a tone stronger than his stomach color.
“W-what happened? How am I still alive if I was in your stomach? Dream commented quite confused and scared by the situation he was in. “Okay, let me explain, okay? Be calm…” Dream nodded letting the mer explain what he had to say.
“Okay then, I saw that you were being hunted by a giant squid, but by the time I released you from its grasp you were about to pass out, so I placed you in my mouth and swallowed the water so you could get air. . Although apparently, by that time you had already passed out, so I panicked thinking that you were going to die and decided to swallow you, hoping that the muscles of my throat could renimate you. Apparently it worked, since as soon as you entered the pouch, you began to pour out all the water you had swallowed and well after that was when you screamed. He explained while scratching the back of his neck.
“B-But what about the stomach? Wasn't I in the stomach? Dream asked, confused. “Oh no, no. If you had been in my stomach you would have died for sure, you were in my pouch, which is made especially for hatchlings when they still can't breathe well underwater or to keep them safe from other creatures."
Dream’s eyes widened in surprise. “So, you... saved my life. Why?" Faced with that question, the mer passed his hand across his forehead, brushing the hair out of his eyes. “Honestly, for some reason I felt like I should, you look about my age too. I don't know, I just didn't want you to die, okay?" He finished saying, looking away not knowing how to explain it.
Dream gave him a small smile. "Thank you." The mer placed a hand over his face, hiding the blush that had formed on it. "You're welcome, by the way, I think this is yours..." Dream's eyes widened as he saw his surfboard in the mer's hand, who placed it next to him.
“I thought I had lost it! Thank you very much!" The mer smiled slightly. "You don't have to thank me, by the way my name is Sapnap." “Dream, nice to meet you, Sapnap.”

Stowaway Mer AU
Part 1: Discovery
So it’s MerMay and I have be working on my MerMay project since October… don’t ask. It’s not G/t and is going to be somewhat focused on the Eldritch terrors (sea demons) accosting the characters and the town.
Also thank you @horseyneigh2002 for listening to me ramble on about fish and stuff for the past six months!
As for the characters in this story we have Em who’s a human, Vega (also human), Flynn Taggart (Doomguy but he’s only mentioned in this one), and Seth our cinnamon roll of a Mer (who is a combination of a Port Jackson and a leopard shark)
This chapter contains; Alcohol Mention, Almost Drowning, Animal Death, and Injury.
Now that that’s all out of the way here’s the story
It was a cloudy day today on the stony shores of Port Murlow. But Em didn’t mind, she loved cloudy weather and even if she didn’t nothing could sour her mood today!
Well maybe a thunderstorm could, but she had double checked the forecast and made sure that there was no danger.
The reason for her cherry mood as she walked down the pebble beach was because she had recently moved into a new house. Her great aunt had informed her that someone had moved into the old manor and that he was looking for a roommate.
Aunt Nihm had told her the owner was ex-military and had inherited it from his grandfather or something. She had said the guy had picked up a job on one of the fishing boats in town and that he still seemed a little on edge after being discharged from the military.
Her aunt had also told her that he wouldn’t be there until tomorrow because he had to go and grab some things from his old place. Em had already packed her things up and had booked some time off for the move. She decided to kill some time and try out the wet suit her great aunt had given her.
She already had it on and was just going somewhere without any boat traffic, she had bought her backpack, a few sacks, and her diving knife with her too. Em’s hobby was beach combing and she had wanted to see what she could find in the bay.
Most of the time she’d find glass or garbage from tourists or townsfolk, other times she’d find porcelain and old smoking pipes from years gone by. Sometimes if the was lucky she’d find shark teeth or old bones from the town’s whaling days.
She wasn’t sure if it was legal to keep the whale bones so she’d store them in one of the many sea caves the dotted the cliff sides.
Once she had gotten far enough from the town and harbour she set her backpack on rock by the cliffs before putting her goggles on and grabbed two sacks before wading into the water and swam out.
——————————————————————————
Seth was relieved when he had found shallow waters, the open ocean made him uneasy and vulnerable. The run in with that pod of orcas didn’t help either.
He was lucky that pod of humpbacks intervened. If they didn’t he’d have been dead. He waved goodbye to the whales and swam into the bay.
He rose to the surface and and took in his surroundings. Even with his poor eyesight he knew that this wasn’t home. The water was cooler and darker, and the whales sounded a little different from the ones back home.
Seth dove back down and decided to look for something to eat. After some searching he had managed to find some clams to eat. As he was eating he could hear something thrashing about nearby.
He set down the clam he was eating and went to investigate the noise. As he grew closer he could begin to make out what appeared to be either a diver or a seal trapped in the kelp, given the fact they had arms flailing about he figured it was probably a human. From what he could see they appeared to have gotten their leg tangled up in it.
Between their erratic movements and lack of an oxygen tank, Seth realized that the human was running out of air. Part of him wanted to swim away out of fear, but another part of him wanted to help.
So against his better judgement, Seth approached the human.
——————————————————————————
So far Em had found the usual beer bottles and cans in rocks and silt. But then she spotted a sunken rowboat and went to investigate.
As she searched around the sunken rowboat she found many broken bottles, but these ones were a lot older than the ones she found earlier. Further investigation revealed a small crate labeled “Embalming Fluid”.
Em surfaced for air before diving back down to investigate the crate of supposed “Embalming Fluid”. Using her knife, Em pried open the the crate and found that it didn’t house embalming fluid, but in fact wine. Em hammered the lid back down with the butt of the knife before surfacing once more for air.
Before she dove back down she emptied one of the plastic bottles she found and screwed the lid back on. She put the now empty bottle back into the bag and dove back the boat.
Once under again Em looked around for a long piece of kelp so she could tie it to the bottle as a makeshift marker. She found a particularly long piece of kelp and cut it near the base of the plant and swam back over to the boat.
She tied one end to the thing the oars went in and then tied the other to the bottle. Once she let go of the bottle it rocked up towards the surface. Em noticed something shining in the sand not to far away.
She swam over to investigate and found that it was either an old compass or pocket watch. She put the item in one of her bags and began he accent but was stopped. She felt something slimy wrapped around her leg and began to panic.
Faster and faster she kicked her legs but she still couldn’t move. She could feel her air running out and began to panic more. Just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse she felt hands wrap around her ankle as well.
She whipped her head around and was greeted with the face of some sort of creature. It had wide eyes and a human like face, it had two dully pointed fin-like ears on the sides of its head and it was looking directly at her.
She saw that it had her leg in it’s hands which were connected to a human like torso but that was where the similarities ended. The rest of its body resembled a shark but with more rounded fins and tail.
Suddenly Em remembered the knife she had and pulled it out before swinging it at the creature. It let go of her leg and backed away. She took the opportunity and tried to swim away, but she was still stuck on something.
The shark creature came back and grabbed at her leg before lunging at it. Em let out a muffled scream and stabbed the knife into the creature’s side. It winced in pain as Em took off like a bat out of hell, leaving her two bags behind.
Once she broke the surface she immediately made a beeline for the shore. When she made it ashore she started booking it towards town, not realizing that she had now also forgotten her backpack.
Not long after she left, an older man had found her bag. He was of average height and built and wore rubber overalls on top of a white sweater.
He adjusted his glasses before checking the name tag on the back of the backpack. He recognized the name as the same one that the cashier had at the bait shop down by the pier.
He took the bag with him as he walked back to his research station so that he could get his boat and return the bag to its owner.
——————————————————————————
Seth had grabbed the diver’s leg so he could try and untangle it from their leg. He had tried to convey he meant no harm to the human but it clearly didn’t work when the human has swung a knife at him.
He had backed off and the human began to struggle more as they tried to swim away. He knew they couldn’t have much air left. Seth needed to act fast, and made the decision to bite through the kelp.
He grabbed the seaweed with both hands and bit clean through it. As he did that he felt a sharp pain in his side. He had been stabbed. He winced in pain and immediately backed away into the kelp as the human swarm off. He waited a moment before re-emerging to make sure the human was gone.
When he was certain that the human had left Seth looked around before deciding to swim under the rowboat for shelter, not long after he began to softly cry, wishing he knew where he was and how to get home. Eventually he fell asleep to sounds of fish and the distant calls of the whales.

Avatars and Rocky starts
Cw: Mentions of almost drowning, forced marriages, violence.
Summary:jon meets Jerico's avatars, whom he didnt even know they existed.
->Only mutuals allowed to reblog,
Tumblr media
Its not always that Jon gets a break, but after his whole trip across America, hes jetlagged to shit. Which leads him to his current situation.
Hes getting ready to go out, he ties up his coat and fixes up his hair a little. --Im ready to go!--He calls out towards Jers room.
Jerico comes out looking as stunning as ever, she smiles and gestures towards the door-- Shall we?
Jon,though a little flustered, nodds and walks down the corridor to the bookshop with his girlfriend in toe. As they step out, they see the overcast Sky above, grey and rainy.
--It never lets up,does it?--He mutters a little annoyed, stepping into the passenger Seat of the car. An old vintage Mustang in a dark Teal color.
--nope--jer answered, settling down on the drivers Seat-- I Like it though
--Well youre associated with storms, no surprise there--He replied, putting on the seatbelt-- so,run me by the plan again?
--Im going to visit a few people, then we can go Grab lunch-- she answered-- do you need any more details?
Jon thinks for a moment, she knows his need to be in controll of everything, its what makes him feel safe.
--My avatars--She replied gently.
--YOUR WHAT? YOU HAVE- how do you have avatars?!--He exclaimed as she turned on the car.
--Ill tell you everything, settle down Jon--jer said Gently, stroking his knee soothingly before pulling out into the street and Driving down it.
Noticing his freak out, he clears his throat and takes a deep breath-- sorry its just- ive seen what avatars can become- it doesnt...it doesnt work how it works for others?
He sees her shake her head, understanding of his concern-- I have few avatars, and well- I try to make sure not to hurt them, theyre not human but...theyre not Michael level of not human
--So..theyre not insane?
--Theyre not, quite sane actually-- she replied, eyes not looking away from the street, a little empty.
--So...what are your avatars like? Like- they dont go insane or anything,How do they work? -- he asked, aware of how differently Antiquarian operated from the other beings.
--Theyre like...normal people. They get things for me you know? One of them gets me antiques, others get me books or transporation. But I take good care of them, I Keep them well--jerico explained, stopping ar the stop light and stretching a little.
--Im not used to that...--Jonathan confessed--How you take care of them, you actually care. Theyre not tools, theyre not playthings, theyre people you care about
She smiles and turns to him, leaning in to kiss him Gently and briefly. He barely has time to kiss back before she pulls away-- just like I care about you-- she pauses for a moment-- well, youre special, you get privileges
The archivist looks away, skin darkening a little-- oh uhm...I uh..--He looks away scratching his bicep.
Jer giggles and pats his thigh, to then Keep driving-- but yeah, I treat my avatars almost like...my children yknow? I Keep well,I Keep them healthy and safe, if they need my help I help. That sort of stuff
A thought comes into his mind but he doesnt say it, he doesnt know if its appropiate to say-- you surprise me more with each day-- he says instead, hand going to rest on her thigh.
She smiles and turns a corner--Cmon,youl distract me and we'll crash
--Ah thats not a me issue, love -- he answers smugly with a grin.
--Damn you archivist, you and your charming allure-- she replied slowing down to take the hand on her thigh and kiss his knuckles.
--Guilty as charged,im afraid-- He pulls away all flustered, and he sees her reach for the radio to turn it on.
The car drive is somewhat calm with sparse conversation and jerico vibing to the music on the radio. Jon,being the lovesick puppy he is,watches With loving abandon at how his girlfriend moves and sings along. Shes bright as the sun in those moments.
After a while, they reach their destination. The car gets Parked, and both step out. Jon looks upon one of the buildings, a small rustic café, nothing big or particularly eye catching, just cozy. Above it an old sign read "Seafoam Cafe"
--Who are we here for?-- Jon asked, opening the door at letting her go through first.
--Azariel, she procures hard to get books for me--jer explained, stepping in and walking alongside him to a booth.
--Like leitner's books?--He asked a little concerned.
--Nono,dear god NO--She exhaled with exhasperation at the mere thought of it. She sits at a booth and gestures him to sit by her side. --Those are off limits,im talking like... books with limited copies or those who are heavily censored by one entity or another
--Oh gotcha--He answered, taking off his coat-- and what book are we here for?
Jer smirked-- Oh youll see-- along comes a waitress to take their order, after both order some light breakfast, she adds-- oh by the way,can you call up the owner? Tell her Lady Racounteur is calling her
The waitress nodds and leaves,Jon smirks--Lady?
--Azariel insists on calling me that, ive tried to make it stop but.. shes stubborn--She shrugged it off, before taking off her jacket and feeling Jon help her out--Oh,thanks
Feeling a little mushy,he kisses her lips briefly and sheepishly says--its...its nothing
--Youre so sweet
--Cease
--I mean it!
--Well hello Lady Raconteur--A third voice says beside them, both turn to see a black girl with a slight hispanic accent, her hair is a bright white and tied off into space Buns, she wears a small lacey bolero and a black dress with tights and short boots.
--Azariel!--chirped jerico with a big smile-- good morning
The girl sits infront of them all happy and bubbly-- good morning, im guessing youre here to pick up that gift?
She nodds while Jon ignores the conversation, his eyes settle on the choker around Azariel's neck. Its that same symbol as the one hes got in his own necklace. A one eyed octopus in a stormy sea. The gold its made of looks pretty New, a little polished.
--Thats her insignia right? --He blurts out in a moment of recognition--Antiquarian's I mean i- I have the same one--He lifts up his own necklace to show It off.
Azariel grins with a child like happiness--Oh yes it is! Who might you be?--She turns to jerico-- is he another avatar?
--Oh nono,he is my boyfriend--Jer explained with a beaming pride in her voice. Jonathan goes a few shades Darker and he looks away.
--Oh pleased to meet you then!--The youngest avatar chirped-- lovely choice!
--Thank you--Antiquarian replied all sweetly,Jon sulks as he feels pretty flustered. The two ladies catch up, Like theyve been old Friends forever.
When their food arrives,Jon manages to calm down and ask-- s-so,how did you became an avatar?
Azariel's smile faltered a little and cleared her throat-- ah well, y'see, before my Lady over here came into my life,I was in deep debt to some people. Anything to fund this little place of my dreams
She stirrs her tea lazily in deep thought. Her eyes lost in the swirling liquid in the cup--Lady Raconteur here was a regular for the coffee part of the shop, one time she came late at night, and I was...cornered by these people...she uh... took care of them and my debt
--I was going to let her to free of charge but...--Jer trails off, taking a sip from her hot chocolate.
--I knew that what I saw,That Giant wave of well...you know--She follows up,though Jon doesnr know what she means-- was real,That she wasnt human, but she was such a sweet patron that I...invited her inside, asked her what she was and well...I accepted being an avatar, I mean she saved my life
Jer shrugs it off-- I did It out of good Will...but she wouldnt hear it, in the end she insisted so much that even after I explaimed everything she just...accepted
The archivist finds it endaring-- oh so youre telling me you defeated an eldritch being with the mere Power of human insistence?
She rolled her eyes at her boyfriends antics--Okay Simms, get it out of your system cmon
--Nonono,im gonna savor this-- He says, leaning in with a smirk-- Ive seen you take hordes of things down and what does you in is just...one human
Jerico sighs and takes a sip from her tea,Azariel giggles with mirthful joy and adds--You two are so entretaining to watch
--Im afraid we wont be here for an all day performance, still gotta visit the others-- Antiquarian replied, trying to put a stop to her boyfriends lighthearted mockery.
--Though im sure youll convince her to stay if you insist enough--he adds as a final comment, ignoring the glare from his girlfriend while he finishes his drink.
--But yes, she saved me,im here- it mustve been five years now--Azariel said to defuse the tension-- thats why this thing--she points at the disk with the insignia-- is not that old looking
Jon nodded in understandment-- mines...quite old actually
The avatar looks at the necklace, squinting a little. Theres barely any shine to the pendant, if gold could be corroded,it wouldve been nonexistent by now--jer never told me how old this pendant is -- he turns to his lover and asks-- how old is it?
He sees her start to count on her fingers in that dead language she uses sometimes, it sounds like the lulling crashing waves and a deep deep reverberating growling harmonies of the deep.
--Is she counting...?--He asks as his eyes widen.
--In centuries? Yes-- Azariel andswered non-chalantly.
--She just keeps going...
--III think it was originally made in the neolithic era--Jer finally answers-- first of their kind
Jon just stops, looks at jerico with wide eyes as his mind struggles to understand just how old the thing around his neck is--Are you mental?! This should be in a museum!
Antiquarian just shrugs-- You deserve it, anyway, im done. Azariel?
Azariel nodds and gestures them to follow her, they go to the storage room of the place, small and a little cramped, filled with boxes that contain books and supplies for the coffee shop.
She pushes a seeminglh normal wall and gestures them In-- welcome to my humble Office
It was rather small YES,possibly underground, but its cozy and quite comfortable. Cream walls, one half circle Window to let the sunlight in and a few shelves and boxes with a few hanging plants that looked a little too alive.
The avatar goes to Grab one specific book, not too big or too small. Its like an old leatherbound Journal that looks like it has seen better days-- so my Lady here has been looking for this thing, its really old.
Jer smiles and signals Jon to Grab It, she has a big big grin on her face filled with warm and excitement-- what is it?-- he asked, a little confused.
--Read it-- his girlfriend says.
So he does, the first few pages are unassuming until he spots the notes that have to do with the fourteen fears. More and more knowledge he starts to notice, then he stops and looks at Jeri-- oh my...god. -- he breathes out-- I...this is so helpful
--I had to make up for my lackluster insight on it all. Technically I just...helped. yknow? The information is yours to decode
Jon chuckles and hugs his girlfriend tight,--Im sure elias Will be happy to see it-- he said with obvious sarcasm.
--He'll be screaming with joy im sure-- she followed up squeezing him.
--Thank you love-- he murmurs, kissing her briefly.
--Dont mention it-- jer answers nuzzling the side of his face-- And thank you, Azariel
The avatar smiles wide--Anything for you,my Lady
Antiquarian looks at the time on her phone-- we Better get going, im hoping to get to Rudy's by the end of the morning
--Yes,of course. Do send my regards to him and Yuzuki--Azariel said, guiding them back out-- and Tell our lovely fisherman to be nice
--He needs the reminder?--Jon asked and the avatar scoffed, not answering the question.
Soon theyre back on the road towards their Next stop, the antique store. The drive is mostly silent with the radio playing barely audibly--
--what did Azariel meant with telling the fisherman to be nice?
--Ah, well Rudy's a bit of a....special case. Hes got a sense of humor thats very acid and comes across as really mean-- she answered-- hes a good Man, jusr rough around the edges
He blinks a few times-- I was hoping the other two were as nice as Azariel was...
She scoffs lightheartedly-- theyre not...That sweet but theyre good of heart, you know?
--I trust your judgement--He answered, looking out the Window.
Once at the antique shop, it was mid morning. Still that same rainy street, overcast Sky with that awful grey, and a wind thats starting to pick up as if to usher a storm. Jons about to ask if jer is the reason for the increased wind but he keeps it to himself.
Above the store,a pretty sizeable one, is a sign that reads "mother of pearl Antique shop" with the same thing written in japanese. The sign has that 1920s art deco and it looks old but well kept.
The store has that english look to it and its all in those brown, beige, cream colorations. As they enter through the white Doors, a small bell rings above, theres a few people here and there, Theres soft jazz music playing.
--wonder where she is now--Jeri mutters,Jon looks at her weird-- usually she has other employers cover the work here, but she did tell me she'd be here today
--Well, we can go look--He says, taking her hand a little shy.
--Yeah, cmon-- they walk around the place in comfortable silence for a little bit. They look at the Many oddities stored around, the halls they walk by arent crammed but theres certainly a lot going on.
--Soo..how did yuzuki find her way into being your avatar?--He asked, walking closer to her.
--Its kind of a dark story-- She explains, looking at some of the old portraits thar looked a little too haunted. She swears the eyes follow her as she moves
--eh, ive heard worse
Jer nodds and says--Well,Yuzuki was being taken from japan, her home,to the UK. She didnt want to go and her father forced her. To Marry her off rich or something. Every day and night she prayed to anything that would listen to sink that boat into the depths of the Atlantic.
--Then?
--Well, I answered. I sunk that ship so far into the Ocean. Yuzuki washed up on the shore and thanked the sea- me for it.  She started leaving me offerings and one morning I appeared by her side, she thanked me with a tight hug and well...she Wanted to serve me.
--Im guessing you explained her what an avatar was?-- he asked, stopping look at the old books.
--No,at firsr she just got me relics, antiques I needed. She had a way of talking herself in and out of situations. The years passed and Yuzuki told me she wanted to spend her life with me, i had been so good too her so far...--She explained, looking at him briefly to see his handsome face-- I had given her a home, a place to work...
--Basically a New life--He answered, pulling a book out of the Shelf.
--Yeah, and Well, I relented. I told her of the dangers but she said her New life had to have me in it. So I agreed. I named her The Collector, for obvious reasons
--You...named them?--He asked, putting the book in his bag.
--Youre literally titled "The Archivist",let me have fun, simms
--okay, okay. Sorry,please continue
--Azariel is The Scholar,Yuzuki is The Collector--she makes a pause to see a small miniature boat in a bottle and take it-- and Rudolph is The Scourge Of The Deep
--We were going pretty normal until we reached Rudolph-- he half joked, standing infront of a nice ornate fullbody mirror-- oh hey, Thats a nice mirror
--Yes it is--Jer agreed-- we should take it home...
--Im afraid thats not a good idea,my Lady-- Another voice comes from behind them. Jonathan turns to see a tall, elegant woman wearing a chestnut brown coat with fur across two large panels on the neck and at the end of the jackets wrist.
The best way he could describe her was as if she was stuck in the 1920s, that same make up, that wavy short hair and dark Teal flapper dress.
--its very much haunted--The avatar continued, taking a drag from a ciggarette using a long black Holder.
--Yuzuki,there you are-- jerico said warmly with a big smile-- how are you?--She walks up to her to give her one kiss on each cheek and then bowing at eachother
--Im quite alright, slow day-- yuzuki answered, eyes setting on jon--Who might he be?
--I am her boyfriend-- Jon answwes-- Jonathan simms,Head archivist of the magnus Institute
The japanese woman looks at him for a moment-- the eye has claimed you, this is most odd my Lady. Havent see two entities dating ever since...Michael
Jerico visibly flinches and shakes It off-- do you mind uh. Showing me what you got for me?
--Yes,apologies-- the avatar answered, waving one of her workers over-- show Lady Racounteur item 1414. Please
The worker nodded and took jerico away, Jon is about to follow when hes stopped by the owner of the place.
--aht archivist. Its not safe for you to see it, its unstable and Jerico is going to fix that right now. I do not want you going mad -- Yuzuki said, watching the Man step back a little annoyed.
--Fine, ill wait.
Theres a brief silence, broken by Yuzuki-- you fit well for the role The Eye has given you, I do hope theres no ulterior motive to your interest in my Lady
He growls under his breath-- Im not out to get her,I could never do it. Trust me,if I could change patrons I would.--She smirks a little at that last part--what?
--Ah nothing-- she answered, giggling to herself.
--What is it?--he asks again
--You wont take it well
--Try me
She sighs and takes another drag-- Well, you dont have the characteristics of someone whose an avatar for The Antiquarian.  Youre too paranoid, read too much into it, to enjoy stories, the calm of the Ocean, you cant be paranoid over if the pages Will cut you or if the sea Will swallow you. Theres a certain whimsy to it that cant be enjoyed if youre running yourself into the ground with paranoia
Jon blinks at her slowly, he cant even be mad because shes right-- I am her boyfriend, that ought to count for something... right?
Yuzuki shrugged with a conciliatory smile-- perhaps, truth is I do not know much about how all this works. Maybe you'd do a great avatar for her and im wrong.
Feeling a little vindicated, he puts his had in his pockets and smiles. --Perhaps-- He answered with pride in his voice.-- I think i'd make a great avatar for her-- he added, not Like he'd say it to jericos face
In all his little pride induced bliss he doesnt hear the avatar's Scoff that has the same energy as an adult playing along to a childs nonsensical tirade.
Jerico comes back a few minutes afterwards with a box that heavily carved along with runes and passages in what seems to be a dead language. A magical Nuke is in there.
--What do you have there?--Jon asked, pointing at the box, both worried and curious.
She shrugged--Contingency plans
--Care to explain?
--Nope
He sighs and nodds--Fair
Jerico laughed and with a wave of her hand, the box gets consumed by a roaring wave. Then it subsides and the box is gone.
--Ah Yuzuki, one more question--Antiquarian adds, pulling the avatar to the side, away from Jon--Jon here is looking for some sort of..gorila skin? Magic in nature, has to do with the unkowing, can you check?
--Yes,of course my lady--She answered-- y'know--she added with a conspiratory look in her eyes-- Jon said he'd make a great avatar for you if he could
Jer's heart warms up, she coos and puts a hand on her chest--man, thats so cute.
--Y'know, if uh...our watcher ever falls, maybe he could make an avatar...I personaly dont Belive it. Hes uh- theres something missing. No offense
The Antiquarian snorts-- None taken, hes good at what he does, the sea isnt really his calling
Yuzuki only chuckled, keeping her thoughts to herself before both walk back to the archivist. Jon insists on paying for the book and the little ship in a bottle jer got,but the avatar insists that its a gift.
--Im guessing youre going to see Rudolph yes?--She added as her patron and the Man stood there on the sidewalk.--
--Yes
--Tell him to watch his mouth
Jer can only snort-- I can certainly tell him,not that it would make him change behavior-- the antique shop owner nodded in understanding-- Goodbye, Yuzuki
--Goodbye,my Lady
As they drive away from the store, Jon looks out the Window with a few things on his mind. Thoughts that he knows he shouldnt share, because theres always some grey to everything.
--Yknow,its been two times that two of your avatars said that this Rudolph should watch his mouth--He states, trying to push away his thoughts-- what are they so worried about?
He sees her hesitate as she makes a turn to the left, the wheel turning to its respective side-- Rudolph has a certain way to react to people, especially those close to me
--jealousy?--he asked.
She shook her head-- protective
--Well...that I can respect--Jer purses her lips ,as if she knows something he doesnt-- can I ask how he became an avatar?
The streets and buildings were a blur as she drives down the streets, still somewhat rainy and grey. Theres a sudden shift on the air as they go a bridge overlooking one of the branches of the River thames, Jon sees shorter builders and cobblestone paths thick with sand between the cracks they form.
At this point he doesnt even ask.
--Well,he was a fisherman back in the 1800s. He was working extra time to pay for his two daughters' medicine, he went to fish on a really bad day once--She explains-- a big storm reached the place he was fishing at, it rocked his humble fishing vessel and he almost drowns...
--Jesus christ--He breathed out.
--I was around the area, it didnt take me long to find his struggling form. I scooped Him in my arms and dragged him to the shore, I pulled what water I could from his lungs...he was fine afterwards-- she followed up.
Jonathan looked at the little village they were Driving down, nobody seemed to even look at the Mustang-- and then? -- he asked.
--He knew that whatever I was, wasnt human. He explained his situation, why he was doing what he was doing, all while laying there on the sand-- jerico answered, recalling the memory almost fondly-- he invited me to his house for dinner,to thank me.
--If he had a wife I hope she didnt take it the wrong way. Her Man Bringing home a beautiful woman? Recipe for disaster--He half joke, unaware of the little flirty undertone to his voice.
She chuckles a little flustered--No, he explained the situation to her right away, and I think the wife could sense it too. That im not human I mean. But regardless, I loved the food, I loved his daughters that were having a heavy flu, and I decided to help them out
He smiles--good to know you never changed
--what can I say,im that good--jeri half joked-- I helped him get a New boat, get the medicine for his girls. Hell, I helped them get the kids to a good school, a good college and a good marriage.
--How much of that was...--He was reluctant to say the Word-- Magic?
--most of the money was magical, the marriage part was more of my well- aptitude to detect bad people--She answered.
--Your little escapades with Elias would beg to differ -- Jonathan said with a shit eating grin, still looking out the Window while the glass fogs with his breath.
--I said im good at detecting them, whatever I decide to do with that is something different-- She answered, holding back a few giggles.
--but im guessing Rudolph was very eager to return the favor-- He added.
--Yeah, even his wife was on board--She confirmed, scratching the back of her neck-- I of course was on the fence, they didnt want to adore me as a goddess, I had mentioned the thing about the avatars and they got the idea in their head. --Jerico finally parks outside one of the larger, mostly empty docks-- I told them that I had never had any avatars, That I wasnt sure what toll it would take on them
--But im guessing that they didnt care
--Rudolph,always the sweetheart, offered himself as an avatar-- she leans on the back rest, arms folded over her chest.
Jon unbuckles the seatbelt and shamelessly sits on her lap, resting on her chest. He didnt want to go out into the cold yet.
His action is such a routinely thing for her that it doesnt even phase her-- I wasnt sure at first but,as you can guess, he didnt want to hear any of it. I accepted, I could use the company anyway since onyx wasnt around at the time
With her arms around his waist, she nuzzles his face and Snickers a little as he returns the gesture-- He was the first avatar I ever took like, ever in my life. I wasnt sure how it all worked, what rules I needed to follow--She explained-- and at the time I didnt have any issue with the eye, so I asked it...
--Well shite--Jon scoffs--You? Asking for help to the eye?
She rolls her eyes and says-- again, I didnt hate it yet. Anyway,it told me that I made the rules, that my avatars could feed me if I wanted to,it wasnt too sure on if their sanity would be affected-- shrugging, she adds--not that it would not admit that it didnt know something. We guessed that it wouldnt happen, since im more of a force of nature, something they can sort of understand, so...
--Hmm,thats good--He answered-- then?
--Well, with my first ever avatar, I wasnt too sure on what to do with my life other than Keep Rudolph and his family company--She replied-- eventually his kids grew old,so did his wife...peaceful deaths all of them thankfully. Of course, its not something easy but if you ask him, rudolph wouldnt change a thing. So I guess he did his peace with it
There was something oddly powerful in that, making his peace with grief and loss, and not regretting such a big choice.
Jerico pressed a soft kiss to jon's jaw, adding-- we should get going
--Cmon,five minutes--He answered,cuddling closer.
--Fine,five minutes
《Come into the water
Do you wanna be my baby?
Are you waiting to touch me?
You look so good, but I keep my hands
'Til you come into the water》
The radio plays Gently,on low volume as to not distract their conversation. He sighs in comfort as he shuffles into a comfortable position, taking off his glasses and letting them hang against his chest.
Jer Strokes his forearm with her thumb, eyes closed and head resting ontop of his.
《Maybe I'm the same as all those men
Writing songs of all they're dreaming
But would you tell me if you want me?
'Cause I can't move until you show me》
The archivist hand goes to her face, tracing her jaw with his fingers. He tries to see his face but not with his eyes, but with his hand, brushing over her cheekbone and bridge of her nose, down to her Lower lip.
He can feel her giggle, all afluster, the sound gets stuck in her throat. She laughs to play off her feelings but he already knows, and no Powers needed, he simply knew his girlfriend
She leans into his touch, his hands feel the stay hairs to the side of her face and he pulls them back over the Shell of her ear, soft butterfly touches. Then he opens his eyes a little just to guide her head a bit to the side with the tip of his fingers that press against the curve of her jaw.
Jonathan kisses her, briefly, short. Still loving and warm, doing whatever his heart tells him to. Finally, a proper break.
《I didn't know I had a dream
I didn't know until I saw you
So would you tell me if you want me?
'Cause I can't move until you show me》
When he pulls away, she instantly kisses him again, holding Him close.
By the end of the kiss her forehead presses against his as he lets out a shaky breath, feeling safe for once in the years that hes been hunted by paranormal things.
It almost makes him crumble,he channels that shaking feeling into melting against her,he doesnt say anything but he doesnt need to.
She squeezes him a little, like a plushy. Jerico kisses the bridge of his nose and smiles.
Five minutes go by,and they get out of the car. The world outside is still that damp, rainy cold, still grey skies and  a misty dock that makes it feel almost like a hazy dream.
Jon is still drunk with the very sweet moment he just lived,so hes quiet as he walks alongside jerico, holding her hand.
Theres a few lanterns hanging on posts, light defused with the mist, making them look ethereal as the boats tied to the dock move back and forth with the waves.
Its oddly cozy, seagulls squak and a few bells ring. The air smells of salt, fresh and utterly freezing, but nice. His exhales get mixed with the mist, vapor getting lost in the blanket of condensation.
They reach the end of the pier where a Man is tying off a boat. This Man is huge, about 6'2, very well built.
Black hair tied up in a half bun, curls tight with humidity, he wears a simple white button up with his sleeves rolled up and the first few buttons undone, worn looking jeans and heavy rainboots.
His hickory Brown skin doesnt even seem to form goosebumps, utterly unpjased by the cold.
--Rudolph--Jerico calls out.
The Giant hunk of a Man turns and from a scarily serious face, he softens his empression-- ah,my Lady, good morning
She smiled, happy to see him--Good morning
His eyes fall to Jon and he just utters a mildly dissappointed and somewhat annoyedxhis shoulders drop and his eyes go half lidded, clearly holding back a scowl--...oh
--oh?--Jon parroted,a little confused and feeling a little insulted-- what does that mean?
--Jon,drop it-- She warns, voice stern and clearly not up to dealing with whatever shitshow was going to go down.
--Nono,what does he mean by "oh"?-- he insisted, turning to Rudolph.
--Youre supposed to be the Smart one,if she tells you to stop, then stop-- the other Man answered, brow quirked upwards and folding his arms over his chest. Almost defiantly.
--And im asking you a question, what do you mean by "oh"?!-- Jon asked again, jerico notices the whisps of green coming from his eyes that seem to glow brighter with the mist.
She flinches and purses her lips, mistakes where made.
Rudolph could shrug off the Effect of the compelling If he wanted. But he doesnt-- im just dissapointed
--Dissapointed?!--Jonathan echoed, voice cracking as he feels very offended.
--Out all of the people she could get, she chose you as her consort. You look like a wet cat, no offense
The archivist through gritted teeth turns to jerico-- say something! Hes being disrespectfull
She looks at him and says--I told you to drop it, youre a whole ass Man, figure it out. -- with her best resting bitch face.
Rudolph just smirks and turns to the woman--Anyway my Lady, the thing you asked for is in my captains cabin
--Thank you--She replied,-- ill go get it, you please do make sure nothing happens to Jon-- she kisses her boyfriends cheek and lets go of his hand, walking onto the ship.
--i can take care of myself!--Jon protested
--Do you want me to remind you all the times you got kidnapped?--She asked whilist still walking to the cabin.
He kept quiet and soon shes gone, rudolph sits on the short wooden pillar he tied one of the ropes around. Out of seemingly nowhere, he pulls out a fish gutting knife, twirling it around his finger a few times before checking the sharpness of the blade.
Jonathan heard the other Man curse in that ancient language jerico spoke, and from his pocket he pulls out what looks like a literal stone, but the surface is slick and looks quite sharp. And so he starts to sharpen the Knife silently.
--How do you know that language?--The archivist asked, unsure on what to do with his hands since he cant hold jericos.
--Im her avatar,of course I know it--He answered, not bothered to look up and meet his gaze. -- Jesus, you work with the Institute, you should know that
--Well excuse me if i do not like the idea to read all about my literal partner. Thats creepy-- he replied, folding his arms.
--Thats just basic knowledge,bruv-- he replied, voice thick with his english accent, not posh,a mix of all the accents in the uk--hell youre an avatar
--Im quite New to this whole avatar thing!--The archivist protested-- and im not being handed a manual for this
Rudolph looks up from his Knife to him, with what seems to be pity, but as soon as he makes eye contact he loos back to his hands-- I dont s'ppose other avatars help you out much
--The only one that does always gives me the smallest of hints. Not all of us are blessed with such a good patron, youre lucky
Finally he can say it out loud, he wished he could have a patron that didnt leech off of him, that it didnt feel like he owed it its life. That hes not under its control.
Jericos avatars got a loving, sweet patron that asks for nothing in return. They had true loyalty and camraderie, not whatever the hell he had.
Rudolphs keeps quiet for a moment, understanding his Point-- yer blessed too, in some ways- you dont know your patron, you do not care for It. If something happens to it, all the better for you. We dont get that luxury
--Yeah but you dont have to feed It or you die. Its different. -- Jon answered with scorn.
--touche. But you dont suffer with it when it feels sad,or alone, and you do not agonize knowing that there are things you simply cannot help it with even if shes suffering.
Jonathan rolled his eyes--youre talking about a friendshipp rather than a pact you made, you got to chose It ,*i* didnt. So excuse me if I dont feel lucky
Rudolph puts away the stone and grips the Knife and the archivist feels like hes about to get gutted--fair enough
--Also what is your damn problem with me?
The avatar looks the Man up and down-- its not personal
His companion scoffed-- bollocks
--Think what you want, im trying to weed you out--He answered, gaze unbothered as he twirls the Knife.
--I dont mean jerico any harm
--All of them say it, sorry if I dont Belive it-- he replied, clearly not sorry-- after everything with Michael id rather not have her be with men that end up in a tragedy
--Im not gonna
--You dont know that-
--And you dont know either!--Jon protested, pulling his arms away from their crossed position, voice roaring with anger-- what makes you think ill die or forget jerico? Good lord, have you seen her?! I dont think The Eye or anything in this world could make me forget her. Think whatever the hell you want but im not leaving her behind
--Hmmph-- Rudolph answered, sounding somewhat impressed-- very well archivist, you made your point. I take back what I said
--Good! I expect an apology
The Man shrugged-- im sorry
--Apology accepted and- wait a minute-- the Archivist looks at the man-- you were trying to weed me out.
--Finally you catched on, I started with a personal insult to see if if you'd take the bait. You did--the avatar answered, all smug-- I figured personal insults would make anyone mad,as soon as I got jerico involved, thats when you bared your teeth
--Why you little sh-
--i wanted to see if you'd stand by your Word, you clearly didnt show any signs of fearing me even if I was bigger, stronger And I was armed with something you knew I know how to use.
--You couldnt just...asked?!
--Actions speak louder than words-- he replied.-- congratulations, archivist, you passed. Not Many people do.-- both hear approaching steps from the ship.
Jerico steps out of the vessel with a leather bag, all happy--well,I think we should start heading back to london if we want to make it to lunch
Both men share one look and play along-- youre right,love-- answers Jonathan, fixing his glasses that got a little crooked in his little outburst.-- lets go
She turns to Rudolph who stands up and smiles-- Rudy, pleasure to see you again
--Same here,my Lady. Please do come by my home soon, ill make dinner. Bring Yu and Az-- he makes a pause, directing a look of mutual respect to Jonathan-- and this one too
Jer snorts and pulls the big Man in for a brief hug. -- Will do. Thanks ,again
--Its nothing my Lady, its the least I could do. Hope he likes it.
Thats when Jon notices the same pendant hanging around Rudy's neck. That one eyed octopus made out of gold that looks really, really old and exposed to the elements.
--I hope so. Anyway, lets go Jon
Jonathan nodds at his fellow avatar and offers his arm for jerico to take. She does and as they walk away rudolph adds--He'd make a fine avatar of yours,by the way,hes certainly got the ferocity for it.
She only smiles at it but the archivist turns to see the other Man step into his ship and getting lost in the mist. And he couldnt hear a hint of mockery in rudolphs voice.
With wide eyes he walks back to the car and off they go to london.
Both find a nice little restaurant to get lunch.Sitting there and eating, Jon Asks...
--So...what did Rudolph get you? More contingency plans?
Jeri chuckled, pulling out the small bag-- nope. A gift for you actually-- she shows Him that same amulet hes got but even older, with one aquamarine gem in the eye of the octopus. -- first pendant with my symbol that was ever made, it got stolen and tossed around and once it sunk in the Ocean, couldnt find it until now...I thought it would be a nice gift
His eyes widen as he takes the impossibly old pendant and changes the one he previously had on-- i- dont know what to say other than...thank you,I love you-- he scrambles to take her hand and kiss her knuckles.
--I love you too,im glad you like it. -- she answered with a smile.
After lunch, they return home. Jon changes into a green cardigan and his pijamas, as hes about to go down to the library to find a good book to read he hears jerico from the kitchen.
--So? What did you think of my avatars?
He stands there on the corridor that runs across all the rooms in the small appartment. His hands trace the carvings on his New amulet and just goes-- Theyre....alright-- he clears his throat-- thank Rudolph for getting this, tell Him the Institutes doors are always Open for him if he needs something...
And before she can answer he goes downstairs with quick nervous steps. But jerico smiles and has to wipe a small tear on her face.

I was fully submerged in a swimming pool or something like that. I was breathing fine for some reason, then I looked up and saw this shadow of a person looking down on me. They had no features, they literally were just a shadow looking down on me, but I felt like at one point I locked eyes with them.
Then I started to drown, and woke up gasping for air.

Thinking about Saiki goes to the bottom of the ocean because it fuzzes out others thoughts and is the closest thing he'll have to silence. Thinking about if he's ever thought about letting himself drown or even try to because he knows he just can't die but he wants to..

digging my teeth into the really dark fascinating fucked-upness of helnik. they’re fascinating in being a wartime love story about an intentional victim of genocidal violence and an unintentional fuck-around-and-find-out victim of “collateral damage,” both of which are different forms of wartime violence.
nina is targeted as a grisha, she’s almost killed by the druskelle and fjerda in the books not for being a ravkan spy or agent but simply for being grisha. they will kill her for being grisha. and how will they kill her? they will burn her. and it’s fascinating when she tells matthias in a very justified moment of rage (i mean. they’re looking at the dying burned corpses of her people whom jesper, also a grisha, had to physically shoot) and says i want your family to burn i want them all to be burnt in the way my people were. and matthias says, they already have been. they already burned. and how that changes the entire dynamic between them, everything leading up to that, becuase FUCK. yeah. his whole family has already been burnt. he’s a lone survivor of something in much the same way she is, and his family was burnt not on purpose for being grisha but as a “justified accident,” the casual civilian side-damage of war. and it was her people. unlike the intentional, systemic violence that destroyed her people and left nina a shaken, traumatised survivor of a purposeful genocide, we have matthias as this destroyed survivor of one of those little sorts of accidents that’s swallowed and justified by the shape of the war and what Must Be Done to succeed. (also he serves as like, one of the only times i think it’s really faced that the first army is, you known, a national army that does national-army-during-a-war things.) one does not cancel out the other.
their relationship is difficult and fucked and that’s why it’s fascinating and has so much potential to explore. it’s so much more complicated than the tiktok “enemies to lovers” trope because they dig right at the base of what it is to be an enemy to someone else. from the ship nina is an almost-lone survivor of the damage his people did. from his village being burnt by inferni matthias is a lone survivor of the damage her people did. from the consequences of war on his people and violent prejudice against her own, nina is raised a child soldier and in many ways reduced to weaponry, something that absolutely is a form of child abuse. from the consequences of war on her people matthias is inducted into a cult and subjected to spiritual abuse. they’ve been hurt by each other’s nations, but also by their own. there’s something so brutal but also tender in the way they knock each other off the orbits they’ve been living in and force them out of the home that is burning. love may make you free, but not without drowning first.
#nina zenik#matthias helvar#helnik#they're so. they're SO. look i will gilroyfy this there's almost unlimited material#six of crows#symmetry and mirrors and the mirror hurts#but yeah the fact they're both absolutely victims not only of each other country's war crimes BUT THEIR OWN COUNTRIES WAR CRIMES IS LIKE#well that's a lot to unpack. the violence that comes inside and outside the house#they cannot go home! as a consequence of meeting each other they cannot go home#tw genocide#obviously none of this is to let matty off the hook but i think he is a FAR more complex character and his deradicalisation from military#violence is far far more complicated than often given credit too#his backstory especially is. damn. look have your entire family killed by a military apparatus and say that wouldnt' radicalise you too?#i love them for being a fantasy and (sighssss to use this phrase) enemies-to-lovers couple that ISN'T royalty#and that#for all their induction into nationalism hates each other not only along national lines but the violence of lived experiences like#nina may filter her hatred of him and his people through Ravka Good Fjerda Bad but it's also the fact they very much did kill her people#she very much /is/ a survivor of a whole shipload of drowned people#meanwhile matthias may filter his code through Fjerda Good Drusje Very Very Very Bad but like... also they very much did kill his people#it makes their relationship so much messier#but yeah they aren't royalty (matthias even in the one time he describes his background calls his family paupers)#they're ordinary people who have by structures of war been pulled into semi-priviledged positions of elite soldierdom and servitude#and that is fascinating. two kings set their fighting dogs against each other and they fall in love#that love can be liberatory it can be radical it can be real it can also just be. not enough to break the cycle of violence#ANYWAY!!! i love them forever. i have thoughts

…so I was listening to the Deadfire shanties and a shanty my Watcher would write came to me in a vision. sure, I’ll put this on my blog also
(I’ll leave some backstory context in the tags)
When I was a girl of forty years,
They tried to put me under,
They pushed my head under the waves,
I blew their heads asunder
And when I came back to the March,
She tried to pull me under,
She caved me in and raised the tide,
I tore the cave asunder
(alternatively if Edér struck the crystal in TWM2)
And when I came back to the March,
She pulled my love down under,
She caved him in and raised the tide,
I tore the cave asunder
(chorus)
The tide comes up and the tide goes down,
The years go on and the Wheel turns ‘round,
Soon or late, it will be my time,
But for now, I’ve yet to drown
The tide comes up and the tide goes down,
The years go on and the Wheel turns ‘round,
Soon or late, it will be our time,
But for now, we’ve yet to drown

It took a second, and then there was a sharp sound and he was surrounded.
A gasp he couldn't hold himself back from made what felt like half of the lake's frigid water slam into Pohatu's lungs. He waved his arms desperately, flailing them hard, as hard as he could, as the liquid stung his eyes and the faint rays of light piercing through the surface and the clouds so far beyond it reached back, grabbed his hands, tried to pull him up uselessly, lost their grip as his weight caused him to slip away from it.
Gali had never understood Lewa's dislike for her element. It should have felt familiar to him, she said, the feeling of weightlessness that water bestowed upon those in her care. She had tried to convince the both of them to join her so that she could have shown them, so that she could have made them understand.
But Pohatu could not experience that lack of gravity, for stone only sinks; and so he sank, and sank, and sank, deeper and deeper in the freezing liquid seizing his body in a painful stillness.
Something grabbed him (had he closed his eyes? He could not see anything) in a manner much more solid and concrete than the feeble grip of the light around his wrist: his arm was yanked once, twice, his chest wrapped and crushed against a surface not unlike his own body. Some kind of wiry slab hit the lower half of his frame gently, settling against his hipbone, between his legs, trying to leverage him into a horizontal position; he was grateful for it when the water turned deathly colder all of a sudden and he clung to whatever was holding him in the hopes that it would hold some warmth, any warmth, for him leech off enough energy not to pass out just yet.
Freezing chills bit into his arms, making him spit out air.
His too fast descent slowed, slowed, slowed... And then, out of nowhere, it began reversing.
It was far from immediate, but it felt fulminous to him: in a second his head was out of the water, there was cold wind against his mask, he could breathe again. His lungs contracted hard to force the liquid out of them, causing him to vomit sputter after sputter until he could finally inhale with a long, struggling gasp. His hands flailed out to grasp onto something that could sustain him, anything - but all that he found was ice, thin ice, frail ice, breaking between his desperate fingers like nothing.
"Quit that," a disgruntled voice urgently hissed close to him, though from what little he could see in his panic there was nobody around: "Quit that! You're making it worse!"
The grip on his chest tightened, seeping frost in the seams of his armor, and something leaned hard against the side of his head.
Whatever he was laying on began to move.
"Kick your legs," the voice ordered: "Kick them gently, I'll do the rest."
Pohatu did as he was told - clumsily, as he was half frozen and his joints felt horrifyingly stiff, but he did as he was told. He kicked, struggling to hold himself above the surface of the lake, heaving every breath through the tremors wrecking him, trying to paddle along with his hands. He could feel other legs interlace with his own briefly, and he could see the ice separating before he even reached it, but he was too tired and shocked and cold to think of any of that.
He was lifted onto the shore with a grunt and properly dragged out of the water only moments later. The Ko-Wahi winds howled in derision as he curled up on himself, trembling like there was no tomorrow, wishing he could sink in the ground like Onua to escape the shrieking air creeping into his limbs.
The creaking sound of ice in the making fought through the blizzard's laugh; before he properly realized it, the winds had calmed.
Something like a hand pressed against his shoulder. A second later it was gone, and had shifted to his elbow; then to his head; then to his back; then to his leg; then to his hip; then to his chest; then to his hand; then to his neck; then to his knee; then to his arm; then again to his head, and so it kept pressing all over him lingering only a few moments each time, like a towel gently dabbing stray droplets away - although he did not feel any less wet, and instead squirmed as freezing water shifted within his armor.
A hissed string of words failed to make itself intelligible through his shivers. He tried to keep what felt like fingers from prying his only cover from the elements off of him, but his entire body was completely locked up. A whimper escaped him: the comforting pressure returned.
"Breathe in deeply," he managed to make out - the voice was awfully similar to the one that had pulled him through the lake's surface, and the mouth it came from seemed to be almost laid against his skull: "You're safe. I'll do the rest."
So Pohatu forced himself to suck in as big a breath of still cold air as he could, and exhaled.
And then he took another breath, just as long, and exhaled.
And then he took a third one, and exhaled.
And then yet another one, and exhaled.
And he continued, slowly, as the hands pressed him intermittently, for only a few moments, until the air seemed a little less cold and his body gradually stopped trembling, easing into the swell and recess of his chest, slowly, until he was calm.
He opened his eyes feeling drowsy, like one does after sleeping too long when they shouldn't. There was grass under him, very short and dark, and dry enough soil; the end of the horizon was whitish, almost clear, like a cloudy sky, and yet cut off far too close to him. He tried to move, but despite how much he wanted to his entire self felt too heavy and still to manage anything beyond a weak nudge.
Something that was leaning against his back moved at that. A hand rested on his hipbone with an urgent motion: curiously, he felt heat - but instead of radiating from the contact between them, it seemed to be more of a residue left in the wake of many small lingering chills being sucked out of him.
"Pohatu? Are you awake?" a voice asked.
Oh. He knew that one.
He breathed deeply again, feeling horribly tired. All that came out of him as he tried to speak was a meager, soft: "...ka?"
The hand laid a few gentle pats on him, relieved: "Yes."
Mata Nui bless his brother.
Pohatu curled up a little more in himself and leaned further into Kopaka's back. The contact was surprisingly pleasant, considering it would usually be quite cold: now, instead, it seemed much warmer.
"Don't fall asleep again," he heard the other Toa reprimand him: "I've been here watching over you long enough already. I'm not keen on spending any more time waiting in place and absorbing cold because you stomped over a frozen lake with the grace of a Vako."
He did not reply immediately.
It must have worried his brother, because he heard Kopaka shift around to better look at him, and felt his other hand reach for his leg to lend him some comfort from any lingering tremors.
He sighed as he struggled to find the strength to speak: "... think... can't walk..."
"I imagined as much. What about your mask? Can you use it?"
He tried; the Kakama glowed briefly, and he felt as though his inner mechanisms were working much faster despite being otherwise still. He hummed in confirmation.
"Good. Have you found a Miru yet?"
He hummed again.
"Then I should manage."
He scooted a little to the side: something clattered a few times, and then Pohatu was pulled to sit up with a grunt and helped back into his now dry armor, piece by piece.
"I better not find you upon these slopes again," Kopaka murmured.
He was very close to him. He had a strange smell, like a lack of scent.
Briefly, the Toa of Stone wondered what he must have smelled like to him; then he reasoned it did not matter at the moment, because the water would have washed that off of him.
A frigid blue eye glared terribly at his lack of a response.
He blinked at it.
"The further you are from Ko-Wahi, the better for your safety," his brother continued. His breath was cold. "Understood?"
He nodded sluggishly.
Kopaka's sword touched the protective ice dome it had erected around them, causing it to crumble gently: the winds snuck back into Pohatu's limbs, making him shiver with a terrible intensity, and Kopaka pulled him closer to himself without a word.
Tool stashed away on his back, grip on his brother settled, the Toa of Ice spoke: "Legs around me. Wear your Miru. You are too heavy for me to carry."
"How... out... the lake?..."
"I used my own Pakari. And a block of ice, for good measure."
"Ice...?"
"Against my back, to push us up."
Ah... Very clever.
Pohatu shut his eyes and concentrated despite the cold. A soft weightlessness raised him a few inches off the ground; Kopaka took advantage of it and pulled himself up on his feet, tightening his grasp on his brother of Stone so that he was safely wrapped around his chest and middle.
"Hold on tight," he ordered gently.
On cue, Pohatu squeezed him between his limbs.
Seconds later they were speeding away, a white Kakama glowing on Kopaka's face as he hurried against the frigid breeze until mounds of snow gave way to dunes of sand, until Po-Koro's walls came into view beyond the Path of Prophecies; there he stopped, pried his brother off of him, and left again without a word, letting him soak in the sun like a lizard.
Hafu found him sleeping all warmed up against the wall while making his way to his latest unfiished sculpture; figuring he'd just exhausted himself running across the Wahi, he did not bother waking him.

[Image ID: A 5 paneled comic with the characters of young Halt, a knight statue, and his dad. The statue, which is general shown from two feet up to the hip area, is wearing a chainmail skirt with a dull red skirt underneath it, reaching to the ankles. The feet are covered in armor, and there's a sword the statue is holding point down in the middle of the feet. It's providing a dark shadow for Halt, whose legs are crossed, his knees up to his chest. His top is light blue with ruffled collar across his chest with silver buttons down it. There's also ruffles at the end of his sleeves, and his pants are darker blue. All of his hair is down, two strands of long hair going down his face and the rest the length of his shoulders and curly with some fly aways. He's barefoot. The background is a stone wall and dull, dark red floor.
Panel 1: Halt is leaning against the knight statue, his face hidden behind his knees and arms over his head. (He is in the same position for the next to panels also).
His Father, offscreen: CATHAN!
Panel 2: Halt tenses as his Father comes in front of him, his legs (clothed with dull purple pajama pants) framing his figure
Panel 3: The camera is zoomed out, his father is stepping off to the left.
The King, grumbling: So help me, when I get my hands on that little...
Panels 4: The camera zooms into Halt, who is looking up slightly with one eye closed, his other eye looking to the left. Both have tears building up. His eyebrows are arched upward. His hands still over the middle of his head.
Panel 5: His head is almost completely up so that the viewer can see his ruffled collar with buttons. His head is turned, and he is staring, blank-eyed, to the left. His posture has straightened up, but his hands have only moved to the area of his face.
Halt, thinking: He... Didn't see me? /End ID]

How does Bad meet Skeppy in the Borrower Dream AU?
Okay, first thing for Skeppy in this au
He doesn't know how to swim
Tw for almost drowning
Skeppy went to start borrowing on the house where he just had stayed, aka Bad's house.
He was on a shelf, from which he had to get down to continue borrowing, but he had the bad luck that the thread he was using was worn, so it broke halfway, making him fall into a fish tank that was just under him.
Skeppy almost drowned when Bad got him out of the water.
When he woke up Bad explained to him that he almost drowned and that he got him out of there.
Skeppy just believed him, because he hadn't any reason to lie, he could have just leave him in the water to die, but he didn't so he decided to stay with him :)

while I'm alone and blue as can be
Chapter III of Dream a Little Dream of Me
Summary: You’d been feeling tired, even in the Dreaming. You’d wake up even more tired than when you went to bed. Why couldn’t you just stay there? Stay there forever and forget all your problems back home? Maybe if you asked Dream he’d let you stay. That would be nice.
Pairing: Morpheus | Dream of the Endless x Reader
Word count: 1,7k
Warnings: allusions to depression and wanting to give up, descriptions of almost drowning (if that’s something you’re uncomfortable with, or you feel could be potentially triggering to you, please feel free to skip this part)
Notes: I really liked writing this part, even though it's kinda dark and heavy. Again, please please, for your own comfort and safety, heed the warnings above.
I’m finally gonna catch a break, so I intend to have the next part out by the end of next week, at the latest by the end of the month (I’m super motivated to keep this promise).
Anyway, I really really hope you, whoever is reading this, enjoys this part of the story, and thank you so much for the lovely feedback this story has received.
(I also just remembered the existence of the word ‘perhaps’ while writing this at 1 am., so thank you sleep deprived brain).
Reader's gender not specified

The sky was completely dark when you arrived. Clouds were hiding the soft blue hue you had grown accustomed to, only a sliver of moonlight escaping through them.
How fitting, you thought.
It had been an awful day. Actually it had been an awful couple of months as of late. Many terrible things had happened to you, too many to count actually. Your financial situation was awful, your job having let you go under the guise of a budget cut. Some people you cared about had walked away from your life; you could agree you hadn’t handled the situation in the best of ways and now you didn’t know how to fix things. And the straw that finally broke the camel’s back was a sudden loss in the family, a relative you were very close with as a kid, and you couldn’t even mourn them properly as you couldn’t afford to travel all the way to your hometown right now.
Your only respite through all of this was this place. This little quaint town in the Dreaming. The café owner was lovely as always, often offering you a cup of coffee (which you always declined, given the fact that you probably couldn’t taste it). The old man at the bar still winked at you when you walked past him. It was strangely calming being here.
After your encounter with Lucienne and Dream, you now knew where you were. Knowing made you feel safer, comfortable. You even started seeing Mervyn walking around, although he was usually a little bit rude to you. Being here felt cozy, like a breath of fresh air after an incredibly long day. You often longed for the day to end, so you could finally go to bed, fall asleep and come here, leaving all your responsibilities and problems behind for a few hours.
But in the past few days even that hadn’t been enough.
You’d been feeling tired, even here. You’d wake up even more tired than when you went to bed, to the point your eyes started to look slightly sunk in.
Why couldn’t you just stay here? Stay here forever and forget all your problems back home?
Home.
It didn’t feel like a home. Not anymore. This place felt more like a home than anything else. Maybe if you asked Dream he’d let you stay here. Perhaps Lucienne could help you get a hold of him so you could ask. That would be nice.
With a heavy sigh you decided to take a walk. Long walks usually helped you calm your mind and left you feeling better afterwards. Giving the lady at the café a small nod in passing, her usual beaming face crumpled in a concerned frown, you set off towards the riverbank. Right as you arrived at the edge of the low stone wall that separated the town from the shore below, an idea struck you.
Toeing off your shoes, you carefully, ever so slowly, sat down on the wall, the hard rocks digging into the skin of your thighs over your clothes, and jumped down the small distance onto the sand. It was still warm from where the sun had probably shone onto it. Strangely, in all the months you had been coming here, you’d never caught this place in the daytime. You could bet it was beautiful, maybe just as beautiful as during nighttime. Maybe an afternoon nap was the solution.
As the sand seeped in between your toes, you set off on your track through the shore, the water a short distance away from you, softly lapping at the damp sand. It was a nice feeling, the cool breeze licking your skin as you walked.
You walked. And walked. And walked. Until you stopped. Abruptly coming to a halt on the sand, you paused your walk, noticing something just on the edge of your vision. Turning your head in search of it, you finally noticed what had caught your attention. An old wooden bench sat facing the river, its backrest almost touching the stone wall. Come to think of it, you were actually quite tired, probably having been worn down by your endless walking (or not, as you were already tired when you got here earlier). You slowly walked over to the bench, running a hand over the damp wood, before sitting down.
As you breathed in deeply, you let your weight sink down on the bench. This is nice, you thought, staring at the water ahead of you as your eyes slowly lost focus. Maybe I can stay here from now on. Maybe I can just… exist.
You had no idea how long you sat there, could have been minutes, could have been hours, you weren’t sure. You simply existed in that moment.
“Hey!” a voice called from your left, one you recognized belonged to Mervyn, but you didn’t really have it in you to see what he wanted right now “What are you doing here?” he asked as he walked closer to where you were sitting.
You only shrugged, as you didn’t have an answer for that.
“Amanda told Matthew who then told me that you looked a little down in the dumps today. So I came to ensure that you weren’t up to no good and causing trouble.” he chuckled at himself, amusement filling his voice as he joked at your expense.
When you didn’t answer yet again, he stepped closer again.
“Are you oka- woah.” he ran up to you, his voice acquiring a worried tune “When did those get there?”
Your eyes followed where his finger was pointing, all the way down to your feet, and that’s when you noticed. Vines- no, roots were wrapped around your ankles, slowly crawling their way up your leg. Only now were you noticing the small pressure on your skin, but it wasn’t painful. It was barely uncomfortable either. If you had to describe it, you’d say it was almost… welcoming.
“Let’s get this off, shall we?” Mervyn smiled awkwardly at you, his smile crooked in concern as he lowered himself to his knees and started trying to remove the roots from you. His gloved fingers tried to rip the roots away from you, but they only kept growing more.
A rumbling sound caught his attention, making him snap his head to look at the water, which he now noticed was rising, and rising fast.
“Uh-oh.” he gulped, jumping to his feet “That’s not supposed to happen.” he mumbled to himself “I’ll go get help, okay? I’ll come back with someone who can help.” he exclaimed as he walked away.
As you watched the water climbing through the shore, slowly coming towards you, one thought crossed your mind.
No one can help.
The roots were already past your knees by the time the water reached you, soaking your bare feet. As the roots held you in place, the water level started rising, covering first your shins, then your bent knees, then your waist. You didn’t have the energy to fight it, nor to try and escape, so you just let the water engulf you.
The temperature of the water felt nice against your skin as it kept going up, up, up. By the time it hit your chin you weren’t thinking much of anything really, content on just letting go. Once the water was over your nose, you closed your eyes.
Just as the water was about to submerge you fully, you felt something, akin to a giant hand, grab the back of your shirt. The roots, which had been curled tightly around your legs, finally loosened, breaking as you were pulled out of the water and onto the street over the stone wall.
Coughing, you spit out some of the water that had managed to infiltrate your lungs. As you laid on the cobblestone path, you turned your head to stare at your savior, your eyes making contact with the hem of a black overcoat.
“Why did-” you wheezed as he helped you sit up, your legs dangling from the wall. The water was back in its original place, as if nothing had ever happened, and the bench was gone. “Why did you do that?”
Dream eyed you with disbelief as he sat down next to you. The way he looked at you, as if you were crazy to ever ask such a question, made you feel truly seen for the first time in a long while.
“You didn’t finish your book.”
That… was not what you were expecting.
“To be honest you barely even started it.” he smiled the most discreet of grins, like he was teasing you.
“What?” you asked, dumbfounded.
“You need to finish writing your book.”
You deflated.
“I don’t need to.” you shrugged, your wet clothes clinging uncomfortably to your body “You already have a finished copy in your castle’s library.”
He turned his eyes to stare at the river ahead, avoiding your gaze.
“Perhaps.” it was his turn to shrug “But others don’t.”
He turned back to look at you, his light eyes so full of warmth as he smiled, actually smiled, at you.
“Go back. Tell your story.” his hand fleetingly brushed against yours “You still have so much ahead of you.”
A warm, tightening feeling started growing in your chest. You had a feeling he wasn’t talking only about the book.
He stood up, dusting himself off, before offering you a hand to pull you up as well, which you promptly accepted. As he was about to snap his fingers, which you knew would send you back, you quickly held onto his opposite wrist.
“Wait!” he paused, his eyes searching your own with barely concealed concern “Will I see you again?”
At your question, he smiled one again, hand sliding up to intertwine his fingers with your yours.
“If you wish.”
He waited until you smiled at him in confirmation, his hand squeezing yours briefly, before he snapped his fingers.
As you sat up in bed, you quickly threw the sheets aside and practically stumbled over to your desk, turning your computer on, inspiration running hot through your veins, and immediately started typing.

TW: DROWNING
ok so originally i had this tapped for Atreus Does A Dumb since my dumbass son doesn’t know how to swim even though he lived next to a river for fourteen years and his father literally swam to midgard from greece with a brief layover in egypt but a n y w a y, it’s not actually atreus’ fault he almost drowns here.
it’s odin’s.
odin knows atreus can’t swim, he watched kratos jump into the lake of souls after him. impostýr literally assisted in the rescue.
and yet.
odin still has the raven drop atreus over the asgardian lake of nine.
he has full control of the Raven Transportation System. they drop thrúd off right at the little barn where skjöldr & atreus are chilling, and drop the kids right back in atreus’ room.
so WHY did the all fucker try to drown my son? (it’s control, the answer is control. it’s the same reason why he makes atreus climb the wall and fight heimdall, it’s all control.)
we laugh because we know atreus will be okay (should have learned to swim before midgard froze over) but tbh odin would prob find it funny if he had drowned in the lake.
