Turkey Bones Soup
Okay, okay, this is not gorgeous food.
But trust me, this is good soup. Good for the taste buds, good for the soul. And it’s a useful, delicious way to use the Thanksgiving turkey carcass.
Think of this as a special ugly duckling. I mean turkey.
TURKEY BONES SOUP
turkey carcass, bones, etc, scraps
2 carrots, peeled and sliced 1-inch thick
2 stalks celery, peeled, leaves included if available, and sliced 1-inch thick
1 medium onion, sliced
1 parsnip, peeled and sliced 1-inch thick
1 28-ounce can tomatoes plus the liquid
10 cups water
salt and pepper
2-3 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
1 cup short macaroni such as elbows
1 cup frozen peas
Place the turkey pieces, carrots, celery, onion, parsnip and tomatoes in a soup pot. Cover with the water, add salt, pepper and dill and bring the liquid to a boil over high heat. Lower the heat. and simmer for 3-1/2 hours. Add the macaroni and peas and cook for another 15 minutes.
Makes 8-10 servings

I’m back with more slightly disturbing thoughts about transformers.
Ok listen.
I think cybertronians should be more freaked out by the fact humans eat other living things.
Like come on, bots only ingest energon which is inanimate crystal juice, they’re regularly grossed out by normal organic functions, and you’re telling me they don’t bat at eye at the idea of their friendly little Sentient companions straight up killing other animals and eating them??? I feel like that should def cause more cognitive dissonance for them, esp autobots since they actually get close to humans.
Like I can see them being grossed out but accepting of the fact that wild animals eat each other- they are WILD animals and all, not exactly sentient or even necessarily intelligent after all. But HUMANS? The organic creatures that are the closest to them (going by tfp standards where they don’t mention many other organic species) in terms of structure and emotion and intelligence?? That has to be concerning on some level to them.
Referencing tfp and MTMTE where they have scraplets and sparkeaters, i feel like that’s what they’d kind of associate it with which would freak them out more. God forbid they hear about how common cannibalism is in survival situations, I don’t even know if they’d be able to sympathize the slightest bit with that considering as far as I know cannibalism Isn’t Really A Thing for them. That’s a thought in of itself tbh, would they be able to reckon with the concept of being so hungry you’d eat people you know, when it’s physically impossible for them to do that? How do you rationalize the choices others make in desperate situations when you know you’d never have to make that choice anyway and you’ll never have their perspective on it?
Anyways, I’m entertained by the idea of them being able to ignore stuff like nuggets or patties considering it doesn’t look recognizable as what it is but being downright repulsed by steaks, especially if its bloody or has bone visible. They don’t like the visual reminders of their sweet little organic friends consuming flesh and blood. Too freaky for them.

bones have been washed with hand soap and water. not a whole lot of degreasing to do since they’re pretty old and a lot of it has been done by nature already but they could definitely use some. gotta find a container to put them in and i will start degreasing 👍

Happy (early) Thanksgiving everyone!! I knew I just had to draw this scene from Diarrhea of a Poopy Kid because it's just so sweet and adorable!!
Bob and Gene's Father/Son relationship, you will always have a special place in my heart.
Just Bob saying "As soon as you pass that sip test, I'll eat dinner with you! :D" is the sweetest thing ever. And then he actually does eat dinner with Gene?? That makes me so 🥹

Also, I might have a special surprise planned for tomorrow, but we'll see 👀

tip/reminder for anyone stressed about their grocery budget and/or who just loves to eat good food - MAKE YOUR OWN STOCK.
keep a zip-lock bag in your freezer for veggie scraps (literally shit you'd throw away - the ends of carrots and onions, onion peels, celery ends, etc. you can google and/or play with which scraps to use vs. not but mine always has lots of onion and carrot). you can put herbs you like if you want and have them.
if you don't eat meat, when the bag is full, simmer the contents in water for a long time - hours. you can also do it in a crock pot or pressure cooker if you have one. throw in some scraggly veggies from your fridge. peppercorns, bay leafs, some garlic. half a lemon. whatever you want and have. almost-bad tomatoes are fine in there but will make it much darker. simmer until you have broth (a little thicker, a lot darker, smells delicious), strain it and freeze it. use it in soup, sub for water when you make plain rice to make it healthier and tastier. make pastina. add it to other dishes for a nutritional and taste boost.
if you eat chicken or beef (or other meats but thats what i usually use), throw in the bones and scraps too. don't skim the fat (unless you have a medical reason to avoid animal fat).
i keep chicken and beef stock in my freezer ALWAYS and get super pissed when i have to buy broth/stock because it's expensive and tastes like nothing compared to what i make.
i freeze mine in mason jars (leave room at the top so they don't explode in the freezer!) because i'm southern and have so many in my house it should be a crime, but you can use tupperware, freezer bags, whatever you've got.
i ran out of chicken broth last week so i bought a whole chicken for $10 (they used to be $5 wtf) and roasted that in the oven with some veggies which was 2.5 meals for my family of 3 and then put the carcass and leftover bones and scraps in a pot with my freezer bag of random scraps and simmered it forever and the resulting broth smells so good it's making me hungry even though i just ate. i've got a quart jar and 6 pints of goodness going in my freezer and i made it all with stuff that otherwise would've gone in the trash.
good stock is my religion feel free to ask questions <3

Afternoon chickie check, squatting down means guaranteed the birds are going to come running to see what I'm doing. And the geese are getting a little friendlier! Doubt they'll ever actually be friendly but they're not as terrified of me anymore. Turkeys also went last week, got about thirty pounds of meat off the pair of them. Freezer is PACKED between them and garden harvest.
There is a plan in place for a winter goose shelter, since I don't think I will ever get them in the coop, I just need to borrow a truck to get some cattle panels home.
