Ya'know something weird about the Tumblr blackout?
It was scheduled for the end of pride month, and the beginning of disability pride month.
And everyone knows that this won't work, given this never works. The best way to get a change would be review bombing.
Now, the blackout targets the last day we can celebrate pride month on Tumblr, and the first few days of disability pride month on Tumblr. And I think it's rather purposeful.
Now let me make an official proposal.
Let's review bomb the shit out of Tumblr from now onwards until we get a change. It might take a while, but it won't kill off a social media for no reason whatsoever.
Let's annoy the everloving shit out of Tumblr.

2023: The year of all time
This felt like the first year post-COVID where things really kicked into high gear for me personally. My new year's resolution was that I would go out and have fun for once.
And had fun I did.
I did some voicework reading for a story podcast, I went to a bunch of amazing concerts (nothing beats seeing Weird Al for my birthday!), and I sorted out a bunch of RL stuff and put a neat little bow on it. Thank goodness.
But fuck all that sappy shit: Here's a small collection of things I really enjoyed this year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: An excellent sequel to a seemingly unfollow-uppable first film. Takes everything from ITSV, and amps it up to twenty with a stunning visual style, a sonically fitting soundtrack, and a meta-commentary on the nature of Spider-Man's character and whether they really deserve all the tragedy thrown at them.
Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe: The guys who made Pud did another show, this time with funding from the Australian Government! While stripped back in its setting, they continue to provide the same stupid bullshit that put me into laughing fits as they did with their Netflix show. Haven't they done well.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: I think when people heard about "An animated Scott Pilgrim show with the live-action cast and Edgar Wright producing", they did not expect "A proper dissection of Ramona Flowers' character and her motivations, as well as her own journey of forgiving the Evil Exes. Also lots of yaoi." Scott Pilgrim continues to dominate as the premier "guy learns not to be a shithead" franchise.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live in Accor Stadium: The Peppers prove their pertained power as performers by playing the purest psalms in their prospectus from the past 35 years (eugh, what a mouthful). Flea came out, did a 30-second handstand, waved and said hello to the moon and then got up some people littering in the crowd. Their life is more than just a read-through.
Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You: I had absolutely no clue who Caroline was before I listened to this album. I now realise that she might just be the person that pop needs right now. A soaring collection of songs destined to become classics down the line, like a greatest hits compilation that doesn't exist. We're all on Caroline's island, and we ain't leaving.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk: I kept my eye on this game as it was developing, and it was absolutely worth it to see it come through in the end. Satisfying gameplay that requires you to learn how to combo to progress, an addicting artstyle inspired by Y2K, and the soundtrack. Holy fuck the soundtrack. I just can't get enuf.
Weird Al Yankovic - TUROTRSIIIVT: Man, what a title. Emu Phillips come out swinging with jokes I did not expect, and then Weird Al comes out aggressively swinging, with all the songs you don't know him for. He then did a polka melody of his parodies, did a ritual halfway through, and then ended the concert on a high note. Only the best from Strange Alfred.
Doctor Who 2023 Specials: That bastard David Tennant returning led me down the rabbit hole known as watching Doctor Who, and did it ever pay off more than these specials. A trans woman saves the day and the Doctor realises he's bi, black, and needs therapy. A magnificent close on a chapter of one of the greatest sci-fis ever, and a bright step into the future.
The Hyperfixation of the Year award goes to none other than
Tumblr media
Homestuck, everyone's favourite webcomic! Everyone's.
And I think that's partly because I joined this website to begin with. I probably say this all the time, but leaving Reddit was probably the best decision I could have made at that time. As much as I reminisce, the communities I was in began to get a little stale. Same jokes, same shitposts, a different day. Tumblr in some strange way, is not that. It feels less like a big communal website and more like a collection of small towns spread across a large spot of land. Calm and village-like, you know?
So to all my mutuals, my followers, to the people that liked and reboggled my stinky posts, to all that offered mealworms and crickets in my askbox, thank you. "Gecko Boy" might just be a silly lil joke in the grand scheme of things, but it's a fun joke to play into.
Whatever comes next year, I know I've got the energy to keep going. Have a good 2024 everybody. <3

My thoughts on the whole “Angels are killed by angelic weapons” thingy
Tumblr media
Now as many have started speculating since our first introduction to Carmila Karmine (in ep 3 if i remember corectly) it seemed, since Carmilla was able to kill an angel while trying to protecte her daughters(and in that moment in time she most likely didn’t know that she will be able to succeed, thus trying to sacrifice herself) that the plot was moving to the direction of “angelic beings can only be killed by a selfless act”. This is also indicated by the lyrics of the song “Out for Love” in which Carmilla basically tells Vaggie if you want to win you have to fill your heart with love for those dear to you. This would also make sense lore wise, you can not tell me that not one single person in 10.000 years has tried to kill angels before with angelic weapons.
It feels like they changed trajectory at the half way point because the final end battle would not play out the same if we go for the “love overpowers all” since the army behind Charlie, the cannibals, are doing it for selfish reasons, aka wanting to taste angel flesh. I think they could’ve written a more compelling story had they stuck with what they hinted as originally. Subverting expectations isn't always the best route to take. Here’s my take:
The battle would commence and it would be a bloody bath, leaving our MC in a state of disbelief, regret, and blaming themselves for the deaths of so many. While Charlie is distracted, not being able to hold up defense for all the hotel members, Sir pentious spots an angel trying to stab Cherri from behind. He leaps in front of her taking the blow, while also managing to fately injure the angel. The other angels get scared at the sight of their fellow exterminator’s death and flee the scene since they have never seen it happen either and become scared of dying. Leaving only Adam and Lute behind.
From than on the story plays on like how it originally did in the actual show after they call for falling back. Seeing the deaths of so many who were lead by her, trusted her, believed in her, would definitely scar Charlie, still sticking to her morals, hopes and dreams but maturing a bit more, being less trusting, more cautious. This also revealing to everyone how sinners can defeat exorcists. It would also make Sir Pentious’s death hit harder, not like how it was made into a joke in the show.
It took me less than half an hour the come up with this. I love the show, I enjoyed it a lot, I’ve been a fan of Viv since i was 11, way before the pilot first aired on youtube, but I am deeply disappointed in the writing, it feels like a slap to the face the whole “angelic weapons work on angels, duh”.

She remains remarkably composed for the most part but Holly Munro is really going through it tbh. Imagine: you are 18 and your boss is a 15 year old. You have a minor crush on one of your coworkers who hates you because she sees you as a threat to her crush. (He is a boy. You are a lesbian.) The two of you have such a bad fight it destroys a building and then she quits and everyone, including your boss, thinks it's because of you. Then she comes back and you try to bury the hatchet while sharing a hotel room and she reveals she's been enacting a horsegirl movie with an undead graverobbing cultist and fondly reminisces over how he'd encourage her to kill you with various kitchen implements. Over the span of a year you blow up a research facility, rob a grave, fight a crime ring, and take a day trip to hell. You were hired to be an admin assistant.
(Joking tone aside, she's vague about why she left her last job beyond that her boss was "disgusting" and "didn't treat his employees well", but given that she was a young woman who'd just turned 18 working as a secretary for a powerful older man, I wouldn't be surprised if he was acting inappropriately, which would make it even more galling for Lucy to immediately get her hackles up. The last thing Holly wants is special attention from her male boss. I hope she enjoyed blowing up Rotwell's laboratory.)

Salutations. This blog (or @giratina-official) shall not participate in the Tumblr blackout. I’ve seen proposals of review-bombing the app as an alternative. That is a better plan. Tumblr is not Reddit, and we need a different method. Besides, I don’t want to leave my beloved hellsite.

Some writers lose their shit when people give them 4-star reviews. I'm happy with 4 star reviews. I'm even amused by 1 star reviews.
But 3 stars?!? that is where my annoyance button is.
You can love my story, you can hate it, but to think it's lukewarm??? Mediocre? "Just okay"?
Now, I will admit that gets me salty. I'd rather be terrible than "Meh. I guess it was alright."

Any recommendations on what to list on reviews? haven't been on Tumblr that long so I'm not sure on what the biggest issues are, also I'm not sure on who to ask so I thought I'd try with you :')
(also: LOVE the pf, Jason is one of the Boys of all time ♥️ funny AND hot? I'll take two to go, please. saying this as an avid Riddler fan, who is such a loser)
No worries, friendo!
For review bombing Tumblr, issues that I know of are:
•The new photo viewer does not allow people to zoom in. This makes it harder for people with poor eyesight to read text and see details.
•There are flashing/eyestraining ads that users now have to allow to take up their entire screen in order to pass and continue scrolling.
•There are some people saying you can't listen to videos unless you have push notifications on. (I haven't experienced this, but I saw someone mention it.)
•Americans cannot turn off Tumblr Live for more than a week at a time. (It's incredibly annoying and an invasion of internet privacy.)
•It is much harder to report abuse and hate speech than it is to report sexual content and spam.
And that's about what I know of; honestly, I used the main blackout proposal post for most of these because they did list a series of demands. I also don't know where else to go to find a more complete list, but I think this can at least get you started.
(Also, yes, thank you, Jay is My Boi, I love him so much, he's terrible and amazing and I love him. And don't worry; Jason's a loser, too, haha!)

The Half Life of Valery K by Natasha Pulley would be so good if it was good
#i'm gonna have to revive my goodreads account just to leave a bad review AND send 10 million ranting voice messages to my friend tomorrow#ok first the premise was good and based on true history about the ussr's secret nuclear testing facility City 40#the first half of the book had well-written mystery and the atmosphere was truly chilling it was a great cold war era thriller#unfortunately this book has too many flaws and just things that are straight up bad#such as: the mc is an uwuified scientist ex prisoner who GUESS WHAT worked directly under joseph mengele on human experiments???#and it's just like but uwu he was still young and had no choice#well the author had a choice and if you're gonna write something like that at least explore the topic properly????????#oh yeah and an entire prisoner train carriage of women gets raped by all the male prisoner except for valery our heroic mc#who couldn't do anything about it then until he laters kills all of those men with a bomb so he gets a traumatic AND a heroic backstory#and then the love interest: the kgb man with a wife and 4 kids he dearly loves but who conveniently get written off at the end#with no clear resolution as to what actually happened to his family after he defects abroad and he barely even mentions them afterwards????#oh yeah and our mc has some wildly anachronistic sjw-esque tumblr feminisms that the author forced in seemingly to make up for her#treatment of the actual female characters in the book???#the science was sound for the most part except the so-called scientist characters were being STUPID about it#they're like ohhh i wonder what are these weird mud geysers that keep popping off when we're not on volcanic ground#THAT'S THE GODDAMN HEAT FROM THE RADIOACTIVE WASTE AND I KNEW THAT FROM THE FIRST MENTION OF THESE GEYSERS#also the authir doesn't know how russian surnames work and wildly overestimates the amount of coffee that russians drink#and wildly underestimates the alcohol tolerance of 50+ year old bulky kgb officers and doesn't seem to know that the russian language#is gendered. like she writes a whole monologue for valery complaining about being called mister by the english because it's gendered????#also the whole resolution of the book is like a mediocre action thriller airport novel compared to the tense and atmospheric beginning#nah i'm going to sleep. good night

It’s not just fiction. It’s not curating your fandom space. It’s not scrolling past things you don’t want to read. Nothing we do exists in a vacuum, and that includes fandom engagement.
That old adage about writers telling the readers more about themselves than their characters really has been speaking to me of late. It’s true, I’ve been reminded that it’s true many times in rereading my own work and in looking back at what I’ve written recently. I cannot craft a story that is devoid of myself. Simply because every word I write is colored by my own world views. I think it’s very strange if any writer were to claim to be the exception to this.
Based on who I’ve had the joy of interacting with online because of my writing, I know that most of the people reading my work and engaging with it share at least some of my views. Seeing as what I’ve written is impossible to divorce from those views, they must come through in what people read. So if someone enjoys what I’ve written, it must be because they agree with my stance on certain things and have a similar perspective regarding certain things. I know this is definitely true of the things I’ve read, as well. Which is to say, if I do find something in a piece of work that feels at odds with my views and perspective, I will click out and move on. As I imagine many others will if they’re in a similar situation. This leaves me with a community of fellow readers that share my views and perspectives and are happy to have those ideas reinforced and reiterated in what they read. It’s a lovely place to be as both a writer and a reader.
Where this created community becomes insidious is when the views and perspectives being reinforced and reiterated are deeply racist, antisemitic, homophobic, misogynistic, or discriminatory in any other way. When there is a group of people reading works that are written by others to include these discriminatory tropes. When there is a writer allowing their discriminatory views to color their writing and when their views are harmful to the perception of real life minorities. This echo chamber that’s been created is only perpetuating deeply problematic stereotypes that are both symptoms of and root causes of real life discrimination.
It’s not just fiction. It’s ideas and views and perspectives you’re carrying throughout your day to day life. And it’s not a question of whether or not you’ll act on those things, because you already are. You’re reading and supporting things that echo those harmful views. You’re writing things that perpetuate those harmful views. You’re putting into the world further discriminatory imagery that may catch the attention of someone new and pull them into this community. Where discriminatory tropes and stereotypes are suddenly on display openly, repeated again and again until they no longer seem harmful or wrong. Until they just seem normal.
You’re not creating something in a vacuum. You’re normalizing ideas that cause real, true harm to minority groups. Ideas that have led to our rights being taken from us, our bodies being attacked, and our lives being ended. Because those of us who don’t share these ideas are already avoiding your work. We’re already curating our online spaces to see as little of it as possible. We are not the ones being constantly shown these views and accepting them as the norm.
This is not the norm. This cannot be the norm. This is why conversations about discrimination in fandoms, and in all fictional works, need to be held by those open to creating a true dialogue that can initiate change. You are allowing yourself to see racist stereotypes as “okay” because “it’s fiction.” You are allowing yourself to excuse someone who is putting out blatantly discriminatory messaging. You are allowing this to become your status quo.
The next time you see a brown person stopped at the airport security checkpoint, ask yourself if you would accept that as “okay” were you to see it written into a novel. If the answer is no, consider why you’re accepting this.

Summary:
Nicky loves his family, he really does. But the blessed indulgences he gets to share with Joe when there’s no one else around to interrupt or bear witness, he misses those things as much as he misses his family when he’s been without them for too long. Okay so I know we’ve all been looping the Goncharov theme but like major shout out to @caramiaaddio for also transcribing it because now I can like show what I’ve been rambling at my friends about for so long. Y’all haven’t had to hear me obsess over this so it’s not annoying to you yet. Maybe.
Because what I love about this theme is that it encapsulates both Goncharovs. Hear me out. Obviously this is what plays during the palace dance scene and since that’s framed so fully on Gonch himself because, duh, main character, you can say that the whole theme itself centers on Gonch. But! I actually think that the opening to the waltz is Katya’s leitmotif.
Putting it under the cut in case you’re my friends who’ve already heard me talk about this too many times.
This is what I’m talking about:
Tumblr media
Those four bars show up with Katya more than with Gonch, like think about it. I mean, it’s literally played in a major key when she meets Sofia. Which, like, SUBTLE. But anyway, variations of it play in the background of her and Gonch eating together and with the themes surrounding her feelings of being trapped by societal norms and the expectations of a good wife, it feels like these scenes have a lot more to do with her arc. It’s also buried in the scoring that’s backing the entire boat scene AND plays out when Gonch hears about her “death”. So it makes sense that this would be her leitmotif!
MEANWHILE, what do we hear a lot during the most intense scenes of Gonch himself? This:
