an intrusive memory from this morning.
14, first time i went to a horse show with my ex gf. we stayed the night in a pop-up trailer. i brought my ukulele. ex gf’s mom wants us to sing, don’t feel like i have an option. there are a lot of people in the trailer. ex gf gets all weird about me singing “better” than her, says it like it’s a compliment to everyone but i feel weird. i don’t understand why i feel weird. feels bad.
what was i actually feeling?
probably like i was being put on display for the benefit of ex gf’s mom in front of her friends, so objectified, i guess. also feeling projected shame from ex gf after her saying i was “better” because she was trying to make me feel ashamed about my talent, when really it was because she was the one feeling insecure.
what do i need to hear about it?
it’s okay that i didn’t want to sing, or that i did want to sing but not on someone else’s terms. it’s okay that ex gf and i have different talents. it’s not okay that ex gf’s mom was using me for her popularity, and it’s not my fault that i couldn’t tell what was happening. i didn’t do anything wrong, and i don’t need to feel bad about it. it’s okay if i’m still upset with ex gf and ex gf’s mom, but it will be better for me if i let it go— some people are meant to be forgotten.

to a certain extent, i have to pity transphobes cuz to me the denial of transness is tantamount to the denial of one's own right to change on their own accord.
if someone were to change the kind of clothes they wear one day, it would be insane to be like "hey! you weren't like that yesterday! change back now cuz i said so". but it's something i worry about constantly despite not even wanting to deviate from masculine clothing. i worry more about abiding by the standard i determined for myself by how i present myself on day 1 because i don't wanna be noticed when i suddenly change on day 573.
but then i look at other trans people and realize that their right to change as drastically as necessary affirms my right to take my little shuffles as i please. and if i had no knowledge of transness or denied or even hated its existence, i don't know how i would find the confidence to express myself. i don't have it tbh, but at least i know i have the right to have it once i find it.

Hurricanes’ Seth Jarvis leans into status as an honorary Harvard grad

When Tripp Tracy was asked to speak at a meeting of the Harvard Club of the Research Triangle last week, he naturally invited the Carolina Hurricanes’ two other Harvard Men to join him. Jack Drury, owner of a Harvard diploma, class of 2023. Seth Jarvis, owner of a “Harvard Alumni” T-shirt, class of not quite veritas.
Neither Drury nor Jarvis could attend because of the team’s pre-playoff dinner gathering, but Jarvis was nevertheless welcome despite his self-proclaimed “Grade 6” education, because if there’s one thing that’s true about the Hurricanes’ third-year forward above all else, it’s that if you try to make him the butt of a joke, even a heartfelt, good-natured one, he’ll find a way to turn it back around on you.
When Drury returned from his Cambridge graduation last summer with the crimson T-shirt as a gift for Jarvis, he never expected Jarvis to cut off the sleeves.
He never expected Jarvis to make it his undershirt and wear it under his shoulder pads every single day of the season. For every practice. Every game. Every postgame interview.
“I thought, there’s no better way to put it to use than cut it into a tank top and wear it under my gear,” Jarvis said.
Seth Jarvis. Harvard alum. The shirt says so.
“There have been a few people who have seriously asked me if I went to Harvard,” Jarvis said, “and they’ve obviously never had a conversation with me.”
The Hurricanes have always had a strong connection to Harvard, through Tracy and his youth teammate and future front-office executive Jason Karmanos, through players like Craig MacDonald and Craig Adams.
They’ve had players from the rest of the hockey-playing Ivy League schools as well, other than Brown: Jeff Hamilton (Yale), Kevin Westgarth (Princeton), Lee Stempniak (Dartmouth), Riley Nash (Cornell). Now Drury. And, apparently, Jarvis.
“I think it’s been awesome,” Tracy said. “I would have liked to have had him on the roster.”
Even within the hockey world, it’s hard to imagine two teammates as different as the goofy Manitoban and the cosmopolitan Harvard grad becoming so close. Jarvis left home at 14 to play junior hockey in the Western Hockey League and was in the NHL by age 18.
Drury, scion of a prominent hockey family, spent two years at Harvard and another year overseas in Sweden; even though Drury is two years older than Jarvis, Jarvis has played more than 100 more NHL games than Drury.
The two are akin to brothers as much as they are friends or teammates, so when Drury gave Jarvis the shirt, it was with the best of intentions. Still, give Jarvis an inch or two, he’ll take all 200 feet, same in the dressing room as on the rink.
“I got it for him hoping he would wear it,” Drury said. “Using it as the undershirt, I love that. I didn’t know he’d do that. Once he started to do it, I thought it was awesome. He’s a character. But you couldn’t have a better guy around the room.”
Every single day, the shirt goes into his laundry bag to be laundered with the rest of the team’s base layers, an old-school throwback amid the sweat-wicking, high-tech gear.
By now, seven months into the season, as the Hurricanes head north for Thursday’s Game 3 against the New York Islanders with a 2-0 lead in their first-round series, the T-shirt should probably be in tatters. It looks just fine. Other than the missing sleeves.
“It’s hung on,” Jarvis said. “It’s high quality. Only the best at Harvard.”
At the end of the regular season, when Jarvis sat in on the Bally Sports broadcast with Tracy and Mike Mansicalco while sitting out Game 82, he told Tracy he would have liked to major in “micro-macro engineering” at Harvard, which sounds like a typical Jarvis malaprop, mishmashing economics and engineering. But it also could very well be somebody’s bespoke “special concentration” in Harvard’s engineering school, studying “theories of engineering principles” or the “interactions between microscopic innovation and large system models.”
Jarvis, with his elite hockey IQ and even quicker wit, may be more evidence that you don’t have to be book smart to be smart. He plays up the dopey-goofball angle because it gets laughs — “There’s still a lot of stupidity going on throughout my day,” Jarvis said — and won the Josef Vasicek Award this season for his quotability, but he’s the son of two educators, and there’s a spark that animates both his personality and his game, burning bright under all the self-deprecating humor.
“He plays a little dumb, but he’s pretty smart actually,” Martin Necas said. “I’m positive. He’s pretty smart. He just makes himself look like it on purpose, sometimes.”
Watching his game grow over the past two seasons, as he spent last year becoming a two-way player and this season reaping the rewards, it’s fair to wonder what would happen if he applied himself in the classroom as he has to his hockey career. Who knows what might be possible.
“It’s never too late,” Drury said. “He plays it up a little bit but he’s smarter than people realize. He’s got a good head on his shoulders.”
And the T-shirt over his shoulders to sort-of prove it.

tried to start binding again today after three years, and it didn’t go super well.
my chest has really been bothering me lately so i thought i would give it a go, but i could only keep in on for like two hours, and now my chest is really uncomfortable.
i put lotion on everything to help it. i guess i’ll try again in a couple days. at least not many people see me lately, although it still bothers me when other people aren’t around

Summary: Steve's over Nancy, and there's a girl on his mind. One night out and some flirting might lead to a jealous Steve getting drunk.

I'm not a party person. I'm definitely not a party person.
The music is too loud, the people are... too many. I don't know how Steve always manages to drag me in these things.
And yet, here I am, once again.
"C'mon, don't give me that face," he tells me as we walk to the house hosting the party. "You need to go out more,"
"I'm fine as I am. Thanks" I complain. "you just insist because you need moral support"
"For what?" He asks, faking innocence.
"You want to see Nancy"
"That's... no, okay? I'm over her. I swear." He says confidently "my eyes are on someone else now"
"Oh yeah?" I ask, with a surprised laugh "and who might that be?"
"I'm sure you already know her" he answers.
"Please don't tell it's Robin" I beg, I couldn't even warn him.
"Nah, don't worry." He says wrapping an arm around my shoulders urging me to walk faster towards the party "you'll find it out... sooner or later"
"Whatever"
I hope he's not gonna have his heart broken again. I hated seeing him after the break up with Nancy.
We've been friends for a little while now. We got closer last year after an alternate dimensional creature attacked me, Nancy, Jonathan and him at Byers' house. He turned out to be not so much of an asshole, he even became my brother's best friend... big surprise. And now we're here.
As we enter the big house we're instantly surrounded by music, people and a strong smell of alcohol.
"Want something to drink?" Steve shouts over the music in my ear.
"No, thanks" I shout back.
"I'll be right back" he tells me.
"I'll go get some air"
He gives me a 'already?' look, nods and goes to the kitchen I suppose.
Yep, I decide I already need some air so I try to find my way to the back.
I walk through the sea of people dancing and chatting at the party as quickly as possible until I successfully get to the back.
Luckily there are a very few people, some are smoking and some are... holding their heads, feeling dizzy probably.
I try to enjoy the moment of peace, my mind wandering about who the girl Steve has a crush on now might be. Especially since he told me I know her.
Could it be Casey from my art class?
Or maybe it's Kelly...
I really can't-
"Hello there"
A voice interrupts my stream of thoughts.
Turning around I find myself face to face with none other than Billy Hargoves himself.
"Uh... Hi" I politely say, turning back around away from him.
I sense him walking beside me, he doesn't speak, though I can feel his eyes on me. The gesture makes me more nervous as seconds go on.
I try to not acknowledge him tok much, hoping he'd get tired and walk back inside, but unfortunately he stays.
Where the hell is Steve when I need him?
"I feel very lucky tonight" he casually say.
"Why's that?" I ask, knowing there's no way to ignore him anymore.
"Because I finally got you on your own and not attached to Harrington's hip" he answers with a grin.
"Yeah... uhm.. he's just getting something to drink. He... he'll be here sooner or later" I nervously laugh, trying to sound as casual as him.
"The later the better" he says softly.
"Uhm..." I think of something to say but nothing comes out.
"You tutor my sister, right? Well.. my step-sister" he asks.
"Yeah,I think. Max, right?"
"That's her. She always talks about you with my father and his girlfriend. She always talks about how nice and gentle you are" he speaks softly, slightly leaning towards me.
"Yeah.. well, that's nice of her..." I say, not looking at him "I only try to make her feel as comfortable as I can"
"And we all appreciate it" he basically whispers in my ear.
I step away, but I tripp into what looks like a vase and almost fall.
Billy's hands quickly catch me, helping me up, but even when I'm up straight again he doesn't let go. His grip isn't tight, I could shrug it off, but I can't seem to anyway.
"Careful there, gorgeous" he winks.
"Sorry... uh... thanks" I finally get out of his grip.
"My pleasure" he says looking down at me. He's still very close to me and as soon as I can catch his eyes falling to my lips, I take a deep breath turning my head to look back inside for Steve.
"Uhm... I think I'll go find Steve... I'll see you around" I say walking past him, but he moves to block my way.
"I'm sure he's fine. Stop worrying about him, for once... and" he moves his hand to rub, so slightly, my arm. "And start to worry about yourself... maybe we-"
He's cut off by Steve's voice.
"There you are!"
He's drunk... already?
"Ah! King Steve finally joined us!" Billy declare sarcastically.
"Are you drunk already?" I ask.
"Me? I could never..." he walks towards us, but almost fall as he nears.
"Yeah... sure" I say unconvinced.
"Damn... don't you look stunning..." he hiccups.
"Yeah. Okay. We're going." I state.
"No no no no no no" Steve blurts out. "You were having fun with him. Keep... keep going"
Oh god...
"C'mon Steve." I try to grab him to make him walk, but he yank himself away, falling to the ground.
"Don't worry, I'm okay" he quickly blurts out.
I let out a bug frustrated sigh, thinking about how to bring him home.
"Need a help taking his ass home?" Billy suddenly asks.
"I... you don't" I start.
"It's no trouble, sweetheart" he grins. "C'mon"
He grabs Steve's arm and lifts him up, helping him walk all the way to Billy's car.
"Open the door" he tells me and I rush to open the backseat door so Billy can make Steve lay there.
Then Billy and I get in as well and he starts to drive.

"Thanks, Billy" I say as Billy help Steve sit on the couch in Steve's house.
"No problem, sweetheart" he smirk looking back at me. "Take care, King Steve" he adds sarcastically
I walk him to the door.
"You know...how about you and I finish what we started earlier?" He suggests.
"Uh?"
"About you starting to worry about yourself instead of him." He says, moving to grab my hand.
"Uhm... I.. I'm sorry..." I carefully move my hand out of his grip, glancing quickly at Steve on the couch "I better check on him"
"As you wish" He raises both hands in surrender, but surprisingly he smiles too. "If you ever change your mind, give me a call, sweetheart"
When Billy walks back to his car I walk back to Steve.
"Let's get you to bed, uh?" I say and he mutter something I can't catch.
I help him upstairs and to his bed.
"Oh thanks" he says like he just realised what's happening.
"No problem, Steve" I say as I help him take his shoes off.
"I ruined your night" he mutters.
"What?" I'm confused.
"You seemed reeeeeally comfortable with Hargoves tonight" he blurts out.
"What are you talking about?"
"I say you two talking.. and he was preeeeeetty close" he explains.
"We were talking about Max, his sister. I tutor her"
Why do I need to explain myself? And why does he sounds... jealous?
"He was too close" he states and he finally crawls to lay under the covers of his bed.
"Yeah. I guess." I say with a say and heading downstairs to grab him a glass of water.
"Where are you going?" He asks.
"To grab some water"
"You coming back... right?" He seems.. anxious. Why?
"Sure"
I walk downstairs to finally grab a glass and quickly go back to Steve only to see him talking his shirt off, to sleep, the sight blocks me.
It happened before... I already saw him taking his shirt off, for any sort of reasons.. well.. not all possible reasons. But now... now feels different. Why?
Fuck.
I take a deep breath and walk back in his bedroom.
"There you go" I hand him the glass and sit on the bed.
"Thank you" he says and manages to drink the whole glass.
"You're welcome"
We stay in a comfortable silence for a little while, Steve layed down taking deep breath and me sitting on his bed playing with my fingers.
"You feeling okay?" I suddenly ask and he hums nodding.
"Good. You need anything I'll be downstairs" I tell him with a smile and get up.
"What? You're not sleeping here?" He gestures to the other side of the bed.
"You want me to sleep there?" I chuckle.
I always sleep on his couch when sometimes it's too late to walk home... never in his bed.. with him.
"Yeah." He says as a matter of fact.
"I... o-okay" I say. "I.. I just don't have anything to wear to bed"
My plan was to take off my trousers and shirt and rely on the covers... I obviously can't if sleeping in his bed.
"Just grab something of mine. I don't mind.. quite the opposite actually" he says simply.
"What?" I chuckle surprised.
"Well.. seeing the girl I have my eyes on in my clothes... God..." he says, without thinking probably.
What...
"Uh?"
"How you have realised I'll never understand" he giggles.
Okay.. he's drunk.
"Sure" I say unconvinced.
I grab one of his shirts and a pair of pj's pants and get changed in the bathroom.
As I walk back in his room he's still laying down, but he uncovered the other side of his bed for me to get in.
"Hey!" He exclaims.
"What?" I ask.
"I haven't seen you!" He complains.
"You're basically sleeping, Stevie. You can't keep your eyes open." I tell him. "Go to sleep"
"You don't believe me" he states.
"About what?"
"You being the girl... I.. like" he hiccups.
Is it true?
"You're drunk, Steve. Your just-"
"No, no, no, no" he says holding his finger to my lips, to stop me from keep speaking. "You're that girl. You. You. Yooou"
So... my crush isn't one-sided as I always thought..
"Stevie..."
"Kiss me?"
"Uh?" I ask taken aback.
"Please?" He says getting closer. Cuddling against me.
"How about this... you sleep and tomorrow morning, if you still feel like this, I'll kiss you." I tell him.
"And you'll believe me?" He asks looking at me with puppy eyes.
"Yes Steve. I'll believe you" I say, thankful for the darkness hiding my flustered face.
"Great" he says cuddling more against me.
"Goodnight Steve"
" 'Night... love"
The thing is... I do believe him. I just want him to suffer a little more.

Music on Whaleships

Music featured quite frequently on whalers, though not necessarily in the same way as it might on a merchant vessel. The quintessential musical contribution of sailors—the sea shanty—didn’t hold as prominent a place aboard a whaler as it did on other types of ships. Some captains were particularly strict about keeping noise down while cruising to prevent gallying any nearby whales. Shanties were also less necessary for performing the work: Whaleships tended not to carry a great deal of sail, had a lot of hands aboard available to handle it, and were quite leisurely in their pace as they lolled around the globe for years at a time. This was unlike merchant ships that tended to have smaller crews, larger ships, and tighter schedules, all for which shanties were used more often to coordinate that work effort. However, music was still vital to maintaining good morale during a whalers' work that was, in turns, extremely demanding and dangerous, and extremely dull and mind-numbing. Both of which could really plague a fellow's soul if there was no relief. A panacea for a whaleship's ills, music rang out in the fo'c'sle during idle hours, was sought out during shore leaves, was copied down in remembered songs in the backs of men's journals, and any fellow who hazarded to pick up an instrument or lift his voice was a prized member of the crew.
Read on, under the readmore, since this is also quite a long one with many a photo, journal entry, recorded music, and whalers' original written songs! I really REALLY enjoyed pulling this one together.
Even though they weren't as utilized, there were still occasions when shanties burst out on deck. Greenhand William Abbe of the Atkins Adams (1858) recalled them first being used several months into the voyage. This speaks to the fact that shanties weren't a regular part of whaling work, but rather an instance of one shipmate finally venturing to include them:
“We began to sing shanties last night in hauling aft sheets or bowsing on halliards — Jack leading in 'Johnny Francois' + 'Katy, My Darling' and all hands taking up the refrain + pulling with a will. This pleased the Mate who told us that pretty well for the first time that he liked to hear us make a noise—as it showed that Jack —not Allegany [surname of a crewmate on board] — but any one of us was awake. He laughed—waved his hands— + cried out 'that’s the way sailors'.”

They were later "obliged to avast singing + haul away without the "Shantie" as the crew’s singing was so "ludicrous" that they were all laughing over it rather than effectively hauling. But even if shanties weren’t often used aboard the Atkins Adams to set the pace of the work, they still featured during downtime in their watches:
“Jack leading sung the watch out in Shanties 'Johnny Francois' 'Santa Anna' 'Katy, My Darling' +c. Mr. Gorland + Tripp came forward and joined us. It was very cold and wet — but our singing warmed our hearts while we were free from the spray and warm from mutual contact.”
On whaleships, shanties were more frequently employed—though still inconsistently—during more demanding tasks such as weighing anchor or working the windlass to haul up blubber.
While greenhand John Perkins’s ship, Tiger, was lying at anchor at the Hawaiian islands in 1845, he mentioned hearing another whaling crew strike up a shanty upon leaving:
“When called this morning we heard the Neptune’s crew weighing anchor to the tune of ‘Tally hi o you know.’ After breakfast our watch went ashore on liberty”

Music was also greatly sought out during whalers’ shore leave. Thomas Nickerson, cabin boy of the ill-fated Essex, 1820, wrote about a dance hall in Talcahuano that he was quite unimpressed by, but his other shipmates enjoyed tremendously.
"There we found a few young women seated around the hall on wooden stools, and playing off some Spanish airs upon their guitars to dance by. There did not seem to be either melody or music in their touch, but after such an interval of confinement our men were ready to dance to anything had it even been a corn stalk fiddle. With their guitars were an accompaniment of an old copper pan used as a tambourine. To this music did our men dance apparently with as much satisfaction as though it had been the finest music in the world.”
Music was also one of the first ways whalers and locals at various ports of call built camaraderie between each other, where potential language barriers were no object if someone had along with them a fiddle (and maybe some alcohol). Such an interaction was recorded by Albert Peck, greenhand on the Covington that stopped in Guam in the 1850s:
"Having our fiddler with us, we went from one hut to another giving them a tune at each, which would please them very much, and to show their appreciation of it they would produce a bottle of aquadiente [Aguardiente] or brandy, and treat us to a glass which would consist of a coconut shell, until it became evident that this would not do if we intended to walk to the town, as before long we should be incapable of walking anywhere. So we started for the town."

But liberty always came to an end. When the Tiger departed Hawaii 10 days later, Perkins noted that they were too glum to accompany their leaving with a shanty:
“We weighed anchor without a song all feeling to bad at departing from summer islands to the cold Norwest sure of hard labor, absolute suffering & danger.”
Amidst that hard labor, absolute suffering, & danger, music served an essential function of bringing in levity and acting as a pressure release valve aboard.
Clifford Ashley, who joined the bark Sunbeam in 1904 on part of her voyage for research, described the music of his dog watch:
"Two misfit concertinas every night sent up their dismal wail to a tune that never varied, often keeping time with the strokes of a couple who pounded up hard bread in a canvas bag to be mixed into a molasses mush for their watch."

Any man who had a bit of a voice or could play a bit of an instrument quickly became a favorite among the crew, even if he only knew one song. Foremast hand William Stetson, of the Arab (1850s), was delighted when a new man they shipped aboard during a provision stop had some faint musical inclination.
“in the dog watches we enjoy ourselves very agreeably by stepping off a lively measure to the tune of “roads to Boston” as performed on the violin by Moody, one of those lately shipped at Lahaina. This is about the only tune he can saw off decently, but he is the first that has belonged to the bark this voyage who has made any pretensions to being a fiddler, and consequently the ‘doleful music’ of the skipper’s cracked violin is usually heard in the evening between the hours of five and seven P.M"

Even in the absence of an actual musical instrument, crews made do with whatever they could get. William Abbe writes about one such time on the Atkins Adams:
Last night while gamming with F. Willy in the forecastle I was called on deck to help make up a set for a cotillion — being honored as the lady of Curly — we were at a loss for music + were stepping to the hummed air of Johnny the Boatsteerer + the orders of the dancing master — Jack — when Shanghai rushed up from the forecastle + jumping up on the oil cask looked forward of the windlass + squatting his long legs on the cask head began a toot toot on an old tin funnel, followed by Johnny Come Lately on an old tin bread pan for a drum — We greeted our band with shouts — + to the music of our mimic french horn and kettle drum chased up + down + joining hands by partners promenaded with double quick steps round the forecastle deck making the deck ring with our laughter — + the rattling music — both music and steps getting quicker + quicker till Tarpsechorz [Terpsichore] herself would have fled agast — + home belles and beaus would have fainted at the sight —our fun was suddenly interrupted by the order to shorten sail — + our quick stepping was only rivaled by our agility aloft for we reduced sail in unusually short time.
The captain, enjoying their sense of play but finding their makeshift music particularly disagreeable, then came up on deck to give them something to better it:
“Old Man liked the fun but didn’t like the music for Old Woman — brot up on deck a new accordion + calling Charley aft consigned it to him with the injunction to use it well — Charley came forward — delighted— + mounting the spars struck up Fisher’s Hornpipe + the strums sounding through the calm evening animated us till Jack or Molly [a crewmate currently crossdressing for the role] + our barefooted stepping got the whole Ship’s Company in a roar — from the Old Woman to Cabin Boy.”

Sometimes music was a little less favorably received. J.T. Langdon, greenhand on the St Peter, 1840s-50s, had brought his fiddle aboard to entertain himself, and at one point taught the Captain how to play it. On the homeward bound stretch--with his patience with the job and everyone on board strained to the limit--he grumbled about music-making halting getting home quickly:
"There seems to be an little disregard to sailing the vessel on the part of the Captain and the Mate. The 'Old Man' will saw away on his 'old fiddle' and the mate will tinker and the ship goes where she likes. I have sometimes almost cursed the day that I learned the Cap'n to fiddle."
Sometimes, sailing be damned, it was time for an entire musical production, as on veteran whaler John Martin's ship, the Lucy Ann, 1841. He wrote out the Program along with the nicknames of the performers.
"We finished this day with a grand concert given by the whole crew. The audience were sea gulls. The following is the programme of the concert. Programme Part 1st Song. One eyed Riley With chorus by whole crew. - By Chub. "There was a Sheppards daughter, Kept sheep on yander hill" - by Lightning Song. I hit her right on her stinking Machine - by Hominy Head Solo. On Kent Bugle by - myself Part 2nd Song. Cant you wont you stay a little longer - by Turpin "Turkish Lady - Black Leg Duette with Drum & Fife - Chub & [left blank] Part 3rd Song. My dogs eyes makes mince pies - Steward "Morgan Ratler - Spunyarn "The Meremaid in three parts by - Hardy "Trayum with chorus by crew Part 4th Song. Kelly the Pirate - King David "Tally ho - Spunyarn "Lord Lovell that went strange, countries for to see - Hardy Solo. on flute by - Young Norval Part 5th Song. Fanny Blair - Turpin "French Lady - Mizen "All the girls in our town - Steward Part 6th Song. So early in the morning, the Sailors love the bottle O. - by Mocho a color'd Gentleman "Milkmaid - Hominy Head "Two little sisters walking up the street" - Jersey Grand Chorus by the whole Crew on Bugle, Drum, Fife, Flute, Violins, Triangles, &c. & wound up by The mate telling us if we did not quit making such a damned noise he would heave a bucket of stinking water over us. Ends the same.

Often, in the backs of journals whalemen would write songs that are still known today. Rolling Down to Old Maui, Blow Ye Winds, Coast of Peru, Homeward Bound, Saucy Sailor, etc. These were learned on the job, or exchanged between crew mates. From the journal of William Buel of the Wave, 1856, the lyrics to Saucy Sailor which he learned from a fellow greenhand:

There's something quite lovely to having a shared thread from their lives into the present. We might be separated by a gulf of over a century, but we know the lyrics to the same songs.

Some whalers composed their own songs, too. I'll close with one written by career whaleman Joseph Dias, when he was captain of the St. George in 1853. He ended his lyrics with the note 'Read and Circulate', so I see it as my duty to do him a small kindness 170 years later by circulating it now.

The Gate will be released on Blu-ray (with Digital) in Steelbook packaging on May 14 exclusively at Walmart for $19.96. Other than the packaging, the disc is identical to Lionsgate's Vestron Video release from 2017.
The 1987 horror cult classic is directed by Tibor Takács (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and written by Michael Nankin. Stephen Dorff, Louis Tripp, Christa Denton, Kelly Rowan, and Jennifer Irwin star.

I'm Robin, sometimes known as Wings! I'm a 36-year-old, queer, autistic, disabled mom of 2 humans and 5 senior rescue dogs, former R.N. & paramedic. I'm a hardcore fangirl and a proud fanfic writer (and reader), and while I know some people will judge me for that, I am not ashamed! I started writing as a hobby after becoming physically disabled and unable to work as an RN. Fanfic gave me an audience and an outlet, gifted me purpose and hope again. Transformative fiction is FUN! It fosters creativity and passion, heals wounds, and makes people happy. If someone wants to discredit me for that, then perhaps they aren't the audience I'm seeking.
Ultimately, I know I'm taking a risk, but since people seem to enjoy my fics, this book is my attempt to try and make ends meet through original fiction! I know some people WILL discredit me. But I'm always about being myself and speaking on what I feel matters: Fanfic should be legitimized as a creative medium. I assure you, friends—the thousands of hours I've spent on my fanworks are as REAL as it gets. The intersection of disparaging fanfic + sexism/misogyny can't be overstated—women (esp queer women)'s unpaid work is often treated as a "hobby," not worthy of uplifting. I'm here to uplift! The risk is worth it—I would have nothing without fanfic & I'm proud. Younger creators shouldn't feel shame about writing/reading fanfic. We should ALL approach it as a legitimate medium. In fact, MOST new media these days is transformative "fanwork" of SOME kind, whether it's inspired by, based on, or outright rebooting existing worlds.
Plus, we queer folk simply deserve to see our stories in the mainstream media and to see the characters we fall in love, identify with, and root for to get their happily ever afters.

I know you're not a fan of their design but Caelus please? I'd be interested to see how you'd change his hair but I do appreciate the wet dog look both MCs have lmao. I adore both but didn't want the gender dysphoria so that's how I made my decision xD Also I like how technically speaking they use he/they and she/they pronouns, I get big nonbinary/genderqueer energy from them both :D
Eternally sad they aren't both in the game somehow though, let them be siblings, Hoyoverse! (Side note: I chose Aether in Genshin because I actually like his design way more than Lumine (sorry Lumine) but now I know what it's like to be a Lumine main, all the promotional material is for the other MC this time lmao, also sorry this ask got way longer than I intended, I hope you're having a spectacular day)
my problem with caelus' design is just that it's boring as fuck, especially when compared to stelle's?? idk the hairstyle is super generic (also stelle's hair is so floofy so his hair just feels flat, it's also just so close to dan heng's???) and ughhh the pants,,,,, i want him to have tripp pants!!!! so bad!!! it would fit the aesthetic to a t istg >:OOOOOOO but men's fashion being kinda boring???? never.
