'Director Tony Scott says he found inspiration in a book of black and white photographs by gay photographer Bruce Weber. Scott was taken by the haircuts and style of Weber’s models, as well as the “intent of their eyes,” and showed the book to Paramount execs to give them an indication of his aspired aesthetic. “Everyone was scared because it was infamous in terms of the gay community, this book,” said Scott, who died in 2012. “That’s where all these haircuts came from and this hard-edged military look".'

one of my favorite things about bradley is that while he so desperately wants to be like his father— enough so that he spends so much of his life trying to emulate him through style, music, profession, etc.— narratively he really is more like maverick. maybe not in the exact way that he flies, because we all know maverick is notoriously a daredevil while bradley is decidedly not, but even that has its own parallels with how ice and jake upon introduction immediately point out the flaws in their piloting styles (i heard that about you. you like to work alone. / that’s just you, ain’t it? waiting for just the right moment that never comes.). their methods are different, but both on the ground and up in the air, the two of them are always competing with a ghost. fathers that they can barely remember, whose legacies one way or another made it difficult for them to make it where they are in their careers— even though their fathers are such major motivators for why they chose aviation in the first place. they both have spent a lot of their lives on their own because of that and when it comes down to the final mission for each of their movies, they’re both shown being doubted as the right fit— once again by ice and jake (it’s nothing personal…but with regard to maverick…is he the best pick? / he’s not cut out for this mission. you know i’m right.). at the end of the day they manage to pull it off, but they have to overcome the obstacles that have plagued them for a majority of the movie. it’s not just the obvious scene callbacks that tether them as characters, it’s who they are at their core.

The F-14 Tomcat was the heaviest and largest US fighter jet to fly from aircraft carriers. When full extended, it’s wingspan was nearly 64 feet wide.

The horizontal stabilizers, highlighted in green in the image above, are nearly 33 feet wide. The F-5 Tiger had a wingspan just shy of 27 feet wide which means the wingspan of the F-5 is shorter than the length of the horizontal stabilizers of the F-14.

The F-35 fuckup makes me wonder how Ice would deal with similar fuckups in the Navy. Or maybe when he sees Captain Mitchell's fuckups (like the darkstar) trending on twitter.

ahhh the f-35 fuck-up… someone asked me a similar question months ago about the f-22 balloon kills situation and i had a similar headcanon response which is, ice going “wow. hmm.” over their morning coffee and maverick groggily going “what. what happened.” and ice sliding his phone over with the CNN story pulled up, and mav goes, “huh. that’s not good.” and ice shrugs and sips his coffee and goes “well god help the poor fucker they draft to deal with it” and minds his own business and goes about his day. it’s the marine corps’ stupid autopilot stealth plane. not his problem.

(until it is, and then he goes scorched earth, ruthless fleet commander hours)

re: ice dealing with darkstar: i guess, number one, do we think the US military would memoryhole it? say some other military craft exploded & not give away the details of the program? “Air Force u-2 explodes over Rocky Mountains, one pilot ejects safely from 50k ft” or something. Twitter clowns on the air force & not mav. diversionary infosec tactics. number two, this is how ice deals with the darkstar issue

Ice lets Maverick borrow a bottle of aloe and is even nice enough to help him apply it where Maverick can't reach . . . alternatively: Fellas, is it gay to smear aloe on your crush's body in the locker room after hours while making intense eye contact in the mirror?

The lengths gone to excuse slathering aloe all over your crush in this are simply epic. Men will use any reason to touch each other. Fic is well written and you can feel the summer heat radiating from it!
