#tobi hated and feared the Uchiha as well

I am terrified to put my two cents in for Tobirama Senju and Izuna Uchiha on this hell site. Mainly because 1, people are very vocal about their hate and dislike for Tobirama. 2, I tried to have a little look at character analysis for these two and found mostly hate for them.
But this is what I'm analysising them on, both Tobirama and Izuna, their trauma regarding war and their enemy and what caused it and how they reacted. And contrasting them with their brothers, who are humanisated the enemy when they were children.
I'm going to start with Izuna, from what I have gathered through Naruto Wikipedia and manga panels as well as other fan speculation, is that he was also a middle child and had been regarded as a spare to Madara who was the heir. Izuna's trauma comes from war, remembering vividly because of the Sharingan, and the child hunts. He is an angry character, wanting the destruction of all Senju on his death bed and to be avenged, after all, you're dying by a Senju's sword and your siblings killed by Senju. And he was taught to hate them but also that teaching was proved by the skirmishes and the fallout of those skirmishes.
Izuna hasn't had a humanisation of the enemy like Madara had. He knew what they were like through teachings and the battlefield. Madara was taught the same until he met Hashirama and met face to face with someone with the same pains. This is a time where there is no Internet to spread word about different operations within clans, there is no peace to talk freely with eachother, you only have your clan to teach you about the enemy, which they teach you to hate and not think about who they are or why the fight, just to kill and hate the enemy.
I truly believe, that the Izuna and Tobirama's fight was reversed, that Izuna would have turned out to be similar to him.
Here's the reason through my examples of Tobirama. He was the middle child, he was the spare to the heir, his trauma of the war came from fighting and the child hunting and his younger siblings' death. They both have the same traumas and they reacted in a similar way.
Tobirama and Izuna trained hard to kill the enemy, using new techniques to kill the other. They viewed the other as the enemy, their siblings dying by the other clan, their only reference to the other clan is through their clan's teachings and through skirmishes.
Izuna's last breath was to kill the Senju, not to make peace with them, Izuna hated and feared the Senju. He hasn't seen them as humans but other. Dehumanisation of the enemy is a common tactic in real life, especially during war and within the army/military. This is done in these clans to kill others.
Izuna and Tobirama have these ideas due to their clans and due to the war. Hashirama and Madara don't have this to an extent, seeing as they in the end agree to peace due to Madara knowing Hashirama is human and willing to disembowl himself. Tobirama and Izuna never had this for each other.
So, if Izuna were to have swapped positions with Tobirama, there would be a difference within the Leaf. Uchiha's will still be around, Izuna wouldn't want people to marry out of the clan like Tobirama would have done, the Senju would be under surveillance instead. The Senju would properly still be around but they would be restricted. Izuna most likely would have taught others to hate the Senju as well.
What I am saying is that these two characters are messy. They are human. They have trauma as soldiers, and later, they are terrible historical figures. As characters, they are nuanced as they have to deal with living with the enemy since childhood. They can never truly trust them due to fighting them for so long and what they have been taught.
Tobirama, as Hokage, built up the village with plans and legislation and treaties. But his trauma as a child soldier, like Izuna, inhibits him from teaching without prejudice. Am I saying he's a shit man because of it? Yes. But he and Izuna would not simply hug the taught enemy like a brother. Madara and Hashirama could due to meeting and becoming friends when they were younger and out of skirmishes.
What I'm saying is that Tobirama and Izuna are shaped by their trauma. They reacted to that trauma with the sword, and they were taught to be soldiers, not men. These two were used to the chaos of war, and they died in it, do I think they could have been rehabilitated? Yes, though it would be slow.
But they didn't have that. Izuna died hating and cursing the Senju. Tobirama died to save a child from the Uchiha Clan.
Does Tobirama teaching an Uchiha change anything? I am unsure, but it shows growth from his trauma. Would Izuna do the same if he survived instead of Tobirama? I am unsure, possibly due to understanding that they are humans.
As historical figures within Naruto, if roles were swapped, I think it would play in a similar manner. Just with a Senju massacre and possibly also the Uchiha as well, but I'm uncertain. These two, in my opinion, are parallels of each other.
If Tobirama isolated the Uchiha from the Leaf, I truly believe Izuna would have isolated the Senju from the Leaf as well.

Naruto is my Roman Empire and I’ve been reading MadaTobi fanfics so these r my Founders Thoughts that nobody asked for:
- Tobirama had a crush on Madara and it PISSED HIM OFF like they def had hate sex at one point LMAO
- they literally worked together ur rlly gonna tell me they didn’t have SOME moments of civility btwn them?? (lowkey that’s wild tho having to see ur brother’s murderer everyday at work-I like Tobi but I’m just sayin)
I WANT A WORKPLACE SITCOM WITH THE FOUNDERS SJSKKSKS:
- Tobi doing experiments and scaring the villagers
- Tobi teaming up with Madara to make Hashi do work
- Hashi making flowers w/government documents
- Mito sipping tea while encouraging Tobi to revive the dead
- everyone in the Tower side eying the sexual tension btwn Madara and Tobi and them never denying they’ve fucked before
- Toka cackling in the background
- Hikaku spraying water at Madara like a cat every time he throws a temper tantrum
- Kagami popping in to make sure his clan head doesn’t kill his teacher PERFECT SITCOM MATERIAL
- totally personal preference: Naruto should’ve had more BLOOD AND GORE. I wanna see the grittiness and horror the shinobi world actually is and how revolutionary Naruto as a character is by choosing peace over violence. The only time we get that is Obito vs Kiri nin, Uchiha Massacre, Wave Arc, Orochimaru…before it turns into DBZ fights
I’ve said this before: Sasuke was in a seinen Naruto was in a shounen
- the warring states is literally the perfect place for exhibiting the horrors of war and humanity. Bloodline thieves, child hunting squads, GIVE. IT. TO. ME. Madara and Hashirama experiencing all of this and wanting PEACE FOR THEIR YOUNGER BROTHERS UGHHH ROBBERY‼️‼️
SORRY TW IMPLIED SA !!:
I HC that bloodline thieves is prob why Madara wears gloves….being a YOUNG (he’s been on the battlefield since he was 8??) powerful, prodigy and future clan head of a famous kekkai genkai it makes sense why he doesn’t like skin-contact/sexual repression and repulsion. And why we don’t see female Uchiha shinobi (excluding misogyny) simply bc there’s such a high risk of SA in this era
Moving on:
- Tobi and Izuna were jealous of how their brothers were being taken away. It goes past the senju/uchiha rivalry like they were just kids and were plain jealous.
- Madara and hashirama def share 1 brain cell LOLLL. Like they’re besties for a reason, Madara acts likes he smarter but nah he’s as much of an idiot as Hashi is. They’re both dreamers let these boys live and skip rocks together!!! 😭😭
- let’s be honest: Tobi built the village. Mans was doing ALL the logistics and infrastructure
- tobirama is soooo second son/eldest daughter coded it’s not even funny. The SPARE, serious and emotionless bc he needed to always clean up after his siblings, DUTIFUL, prob has a praise kink etc.
- Madara is an eldest daughter who also prob has a praise kink and touch starved
- NONE of the founders r well adjusted like they went from spending everyday of their lives at war to tryin bring peace and start essentially a ninja-revolution (PLS GO TO THERAPY)
- madara was just the most open about it: being isolated and feared by his own clan BC he was powerful, trying advocate for the village and peace, all while grieving for his last brother…yeah it makes sense y he went crazy or at least wanted to leave (fuck Kishimoto for that Kaguya bs and fuck Zetsu)
- I don’t actually believe he was trying destroy the village idkkk. I think he was trying to do an SNS aka using fighting as a way to communicate with Hashirama and well…yIkEs
- tobirama is 1000% unadjusted: mans literally created a Justu to revive the dead. You cannot tell me that doesn’t REEK of desperation and loneliness. He’s lit rally the OG mad scientist
- hashirama rlly thought sealing the Bijuu and giving them to each village was a good idea….sir WHO TF GIVES NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO SHINOBI???!! 😳😳
- I think hashirama and naruto lowkey can be summed up as: a powerful idealist. Which is a very dangerous combination. Take that how you will especially considering how shinobi thrive off of violence….it kinda makes sense how we ended up with canon Naruto
- Madara has a god complex and knows it. Hashirama has a god-complex and doesn’t know it. (God of Shinobi title def got to him and understandable)
- the founders failed and they know it. But I also kinda love it?? They’re so flawed and human as leaders and you can see how their mistakes drag into Canon Naruto. It also makes me so sad knowing that Konoha was built to prevent child soldiers and give protection only for it to actually be WORSE (Kakashi ITACHI SANNIN ik for a fact it must’ve hurt Hashi to know ur own granddaughter left the village)
Uchiha are: love is the death of duty while the Senju are: duty is the death of love and neither of them will forgive each other for picking one over the other‼️‼️‼️
- proving this ^^ w/Hashirama’s weird af characterization: aka him being a loveable idiot but at the same time CONGRATULATING Itachi for killing his own clan for Konoha…. I feel like that rlly showed me how much of a war veteran/shinobi Hashirama actually is and how he will always pick duty
- we were ROBBED of baby Kagami/hokage Kagami 😤😤😤 I’m sorry Kagami should’ve been made Hokage it just makes sense personality wise and politically wise. The only way I could see him not take it is bc he needed to be a clan leader/placate the Uchiha/help Hikaku.
- I wanna see him process the loss of his clan leader, teacher, and eventually friends to a point where Danzo takes his eyes
- everyone on Team Tobirama had a crush on Kagami at one point
- one of my fav HC: Tobi and Madara co-parenting Kagami. There’s no way Madara didn’t check up on Kagami being taught by THE senju which makes his defection hit harder for Kagami 😭😭
- BABY SANNIN ‼️‼️‼️ Tsunade was old enough to meet and remember Hashirama it makes sense that Oro and Jiraiya meet the founders
- omg could u imagine being Edo Tensei Hashirama?? Ur granddaughter’s weird friend revives u using the Jutsu ur brother invented that you specifically FORBID 😭😭
- Hashi and Tobi staring at Orochimaru like “you look familiar???” IT HAS SO MUCH COMEDIC POTENTIAL
- Mito revolutionized female shinobi like she’s def the reason ppl realized that girls can fight (Senju Toka was an exception) STAN MITO 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️
- Mito pulled a Tsunade and mentally yeeted out of Konoha after Hashi and Tobi died. Bc the way we NEVER hear about her and Hiruzen interacting except for Kushina, even tho she’s literally RELATED to the other 2 hokages….ROBBED 😵‍💫
- I HC: she was dealing w/grief (the fall of Uzushio made it worse) and she was lowkey pushed out of the council by Danzo FUCK DANZO
- I love the idea of Mito wooing for Hashirama’s hand/politically smart Mito!! It was a political marriage that grew into love. There’s no way she DIDNT suspect an attack on Uzushio lik it’s literally an island w/Kiri as it’s neighbours….Konoha gets recognition and stability while Uzushio importantly gets mainland allies
- Mito tops btw she’s def pegged Hashi before 🫢
- if Madara or Hashi had sisters/born women they would’ve def had a marriage to solidify their alliance. This makes Japanese homophobia not make sense esp in the shinobi world bc their clans trusted each other w/o backup like marriage?? Idk I’m just kinda confused y it was never even brought up for an alliance…
*cue MadaTobi arranged marriage au 100k, enemies to lovers, slowburn*
- also to dude bros homophobia has no place in the Naruto world (and IRL BTW) outside of making heirs. They’re literally MERCENARIES You telling me Kakashi has never fucked another man for information before??? Pls be serious I’m begging y’all 🙃🙃🙃
- there’s def family drama amongst the senju!! Idk I feel like Hashirama and Tobirama have the relationship of: “they love each other but don’t like each other” which makes Madara’s inclusion even worse for the brothers’ relationship. Like they def always had each other’s backs but never actually felt like they understood each other.
- I wish more fanfics/canon covered the shinobi-civilian politics more (I love politics lol give me world-building kishimoto 😤)
- Civilians hold power. THEY have all the MONEY to pay shinobi
- I’ve rlly only seen 1 fanfic that involves the Fire Daimyo during the Warring States Era (Into the Wide Blue Yonder it’s a KakaSasu Time travel fic that actually ✨works✨ 12/10 recommend) but it’s true.
Wtf is the Fire Daimyo doing during this era??? Why is he being so placate about Senju/Uchiha war unless he just sees it as entertainment?? How have shinobi NOT fought against rich civilian politicians before?? (Introducing Maoism to the naruto world lol 🤔🤔)
- Kishimoto curse ur goldfish brain….
- the uchiha and senju were def broke in this era, LMAO especially the Uchiha and I mean resource wise. War is EXPENSIVE the Uchiha don’t have Hashirama and Mokutan, they couldn’t just grow food whenever they wanted. It makes total sense that they would agree to a ceasefire just to prevent STARVATION
- once again…. robbed in terms of seeing the aftermath and devastation of war and learning how to live in a morally grey, politically unstable, resource limited world which could’ve brought in the ultimate themes of peace and the cycle of violence, and the question of if violence and war is ever justified, but…..no ❤️

Fic Idea - Oh Oh Oh Sexy Vampire
Tumblr media
Not completed/mostly drabbles... Obito Uchiha is apart of a large and powerful coven of vampires and runs into you, the reader!
Reader is a floral arrangement store, meets Obito. Reader has PTSD ( relatable am i right ) from a stalker, almost gets assaulted in a parking lot before Obito kills the assailant. Idc if it’s tropey this is just my SELF INDULGENT AU
Reader is very empathetic and clicks with Obito almost instantly. Flirting at the counter, she’s unsure if she should do anything more due to the stalker experiences.
Flirting with this customer was like playing with fire; it was warm, comfortable, inviting and yet had the power to consume me. It nipped at my skin, scorching it with fear and anxiety for the future; what if he was trying to get something from me? That’s what everyone ever wanted… the thoughts crept in.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. It’s just, I haven’t felt so at ease with another person in a while.” Obito reeled back, folding his arms as he grinned. “You have to be the top sales girl here!” He shot a wink and a finger gun, sticking his tongue out.
You let out a laugh, managing to catch yourself before falling off into the spiral. “I am employee of the month, you know!” You pointed to the wall, your name plastered under the Employee of the Month plaque. Obito walked over, leaning in as his hand rubbed under his chin. He squinted his eyes, smirking as his name was whispered off his lips. It sounded like magic when he said it. Your heart thumped.
“What a lovely name for a lovely girl.” He spoke smoothly, returning to you as he reached out his hand. “I’m Tobi! Pleasure’s all mine, I assure you.”
Your hand reached out to his; hesitancy was in your demeanor, it felt natural yet awkward.

Secrets Worth Sharing
A/N: Hey y'all! This is my first Naruto fanfic, which I've also posted on Archive of Our Own. Please be kind and enjoy!
Warning(s): Minor character death, angst, hurt/comfort, intersex characters, arranged marriage, talks/thoughts about abortion/miscarriage
~~~~
Tobirama Senju was a man of many secrets. Well, more like a man that highly values his own privacy and is not as open as other individuals (like his easy-trusting older brother for example). He was not given the privilege of being open with his truths and feelings, having been groomed from birth to be a heartless shinobi who did not allow his emotions to interfere with his performance. His father had been harsh with these facts whilst training and out on the battlefield, blunt and uncaring that Tobirama and his brothers were children and children had no place amongst the battlefield and shouldn’t be expected to take a life without a bat of an eye. Kawarama had only been seven when he was ripped away from this world, so young and full of life, and it had taken everything in Tobirama’s small, lanky eleven pre-pubescent form to not break down much like his elder brother had, to feel such unbridled emotion his surviving otouto had felt. Itama’s death only a year later (sweet, innocent, and healing Itama) wrung him dry of tears, of allowing himself to be so vulnerable when it came to loss because to die ‘in battle was honorable’, at least that’s what their father had said as dirt was piled atop of his otouto’s grave to the right of Kawarama’s. He fought with every fiber of his being to protect what little family he had left, taking hits meant for Hashirama and saving Toka from debilitating blows, creating new jutsus, and putting the needs and feelings of others before his own because he wasn’t supposed to feel, shinobi don’t feel-.
Then, as he stood dutifully beside his anija opposite the Uchiha heirs amongst their fellow clansmen, Tobirama couldn’t help but feel. Moments before he had nearly stolen the life of one Izuna Uchiha and as adrenaline and tension crossed through his ever lanky yet muscular form, the conversation mingling between the opposing clans made his heart thumped against his chest as the two clan heads agreed to peace. Hope fluttered dangerously in his chest as his wine colored orbs searched Madara’s half hidden profile, gazing at those pools of obsidian with caution and reluctance whilst trying to determine whether the Uchiha was speaking truth when he offered his hand in establishing between through blood soaked clans. The time following the mutual surrender of the Senju and Uchiha, of Hashirama and Madara finally obtaining the means of support to create the peace they had dreamed of from a young age as they were forced to bury clansmen and young brothers, was a whirlwind of events, filled with peace talks, negotiations, and making sure his anija did not make a fool of himself. He waited for the other shoe to drop as each party laid out the final agreements, for this foolish dream of peace between the two rivals to come to an end before he began to believe it was true, and much to his surprise and his other clansmen (including his far too optimistic elder brother), the Uchiha set a requirement for concession.
“A Senju heir must marry one of ours, as a show of mutual acceptance of these peace agreements and in means of acquiring extra security for our clan.”
By the time this peace talks came to be, Hashirama and Mito had been married for nearly a year already and with the eldest Senju heir already taken and the other two dead and gone, the responsibility of establishing peace, in ending the unnecessary bloodshed between their respective clans, to honor the unneeded deaths of Itama and Kawarama, fell onto Tobirama’s shoulders. Being placed in such a position with no means of escape or replacement had been both suffocating and frustrating but he knew better than to reject the frail olive branch the Uchiha had set before them. Hashirama had tried to reason with Madara, (“Madara, is this really necessary-?”), and before the Uchiha clan head could even think of a response, Tobirama calmly sealed his fate.
“We agree to the terms you lay before us.”
His readied agreeance shocked not only his brother and cousin but floored the Uchiha delegation, particularly one Madara Uchiha who stared at him like he had grown a second head. Many deemed him one of the greatest haters of the Uchiha, having seen his treatment towards the rival clan on and off the battlefield, but Tobirama truly had no firm and enduring hate and ill-will towards the fire natured shinobi. Yes, he felt hate towards the Uchiha that had slaughtered his brothers but it was not directed towards the entirety of the Uchiha; they had been at war and a shinobi did whatever it took to survive or gain an upper hand, even if it meant killing the innocent. He found himself wondering what Kawarama and Itama would be like as he stood there with determination, arms crossed over his chest with finality. Would they be upset at seeing him agree to practically give himself away as a bargaining chip as a means to obtaining peace? Would they beg for there to be another way, to demand the Uchiha change their mind? Sadly, he would never know and that piece of knowing reality only strengthened his resolve.
Hashirama, placed between a rock and a hard place, conceded to giving away his only living brother away as a means of finally having peace and Tobirama watched as dread and reluctance colored his anija’s tar colored eyes. The plans of this arranged marriage were set and Tobirama found himself coming to look eye to eye with his promised husband and obsidian orbs subtly clashed with his pools of merlot, an unspoken bond now tying them together forever. Upon arriving back at the Senju compound, Tobirama found himself subjected to a nearly hysterical Hashirama, his elder brother demanding why, why had Tobirama agreed to such demands, there had to be another way-! Toka, while significantly more in control of her emotions, had similar demands, her main emotions having been anger and frustration (“There is only enough room for one idiot in this family, little cousin, and Hashirama already has that role covered!”) and after dealing with a depressed Hashirama, Tobirama did his best to soothe his cousin's worries. The only calm and rational person aside from Tobirama himself was Mito, his well-collected and commanding sister-in-law swiftly jumping in and knocking some sense into her blubbering husband and seething cousin-in-law and if she told him that she questioned his intelligence as they parted ways for the night, only the gods and the chirping crickets would know.
With the negotiations finished and the bed made and laid in by both parties, the construction of Hashirama and Madara’s dream village began and with it began his forced courtship with the Uchiha clan head. Hashirama, in an attempt to be intimidating, threatened the apathetic Uchiha with bodily harm if he ever came to harm his “precious otouto”, those his threats fell short for numerous reasons, the largest being that the peace treaty prohibited any violence occurring between the clans. Tobirama was swift in reminding his anija of this fact. Madara and his courtship began with a rocky start, as many arranged marriages do (Hashirama and Mito’s being the rare exception), and the need to be open emotionally, to not hide his emotions and to be the mind and voice of reason always was a difficult task. His betrothed also struggled with this reality, to be vulnerable in a world that ate such an open state with murderous glee, and arguments were had and feelings accidentally stepped on. Two emotionally stunted men together was a recipe for disaster and many watched them with bated breaths, for their engagement to fall apart, for the cautious hopes for peace to shatter into millions of pieces before their very eyes. The weight to succeed weighed heavy on Tobirama’s shoulders and as he stood in the middle of Madara and Izuna’s backyard amidst another argument with Madara, copious amounts of rain hailing from above without restraint as frustration and confusion tormented his soul, it finally forced him to collapse. He shouted at the Uchiha standing a mere few feet away from him under the roof of the engawa, tears racing down his marked face as he shouted himself hoarse, one of the worst storms in the region's history unfolding around them. Madara watched him with irritation, a well-made mask of indifference sitting upon his stoic visage, and as Tobirama finally gave up, when he threw the towel in and allow himself to be vulnerable for the first time in years, the Uchiha’s rough lips were suddenly on his own and suddenly his surroundings, his worries, his fears were gone and replaced with warm comfort.
Their relationship became one of truth and openness from that moment forward, the two of them doing their best to establish a balance between themselves, and unknowingly fell in love along the way. By the time the primary building of Konoha had been completed and their wedding date arrived, Tobirama could confidently (and quite fondly, though no one needed to know this at the time) state that he loved Madara Uchiha. As they exchanged their vows before the clans of the village, with Izuna smirking that ugly smirk of his and Hashirama in tears as his poor wife comforted the weeping fool (“He is taking Tobi away from me Mito!”, “Tobirama is not yours beloved, he is a grown man.”) Tobirama gazed at his husband to be with honest hope and heated cheeks. His heart sweetly ached at hearing Madara say “I do”, at knowing without a doubt in his mind that he was now Madara’s and Madara was his, that he had someone in which he could wholly confide his secrets and feelings in, and Tobirama knew he had been blessed well the moment their lips joined, sealing their marital union as those around them cheered and sobbed in the case of his anija. Their marriage, while lovely, of course experienced its own bumps here and there, particularly on matters of legislation and equality within the village, but Tobirama wouldn’t trade it away for the world because a world without Madara at his side was not worth living in.
Yet, as he stared at the white stick resting within his shaking hands, Tobirama feared that the world they had made was going to shatter at any second. Two lines of crimson glared at him with undenying truth, the feeling of an extra, new source of chakra nestled within his own person only confirming the results within his grasp. He had been born as an anomaly not only in appearance but in anatomicalities as well; the midwife had nearly passed out when she caught sight of not only albinism but his newborn self having both male and female genitalia and his father’s reaction hadn’t been much kinder. Few people knew of his condition and those who did typically accepted him no matter his abnormalities, Madara being no exception to that, and as he found himself happily married and being tasked with teaching the up and coming generation, the Senju found the yearning to have children of his own grow with each hair ruffle.
Tobirama knew the likelihood of someone with his condition, rare as it was, being able to carry a child let only father one and had unhappily accepted that he would never be able to have a child of both his and Madara’s making. With this truth in mind, the two of them still practiced safe sex and were content with the moments of parenthood being a mentor allowed them, never feeling compelled to strive for anything more; well, at least, Madara hadn’t shown any interest of having children of their own. Even with their vigilance and cautiousness, they ended slipping up here and there, having drunk too much sake or simply enjoyed feeling one another intimately, flesh to flesh, and now here Tobirama was, standing alone in their shared bathroom, two seconds from imploding as he internally panicked. How could this have happened? They had been so careful! What was Madara going to think?!
Silent, unshed tears threatened to fall down his pale features, the gravity of the situation at hand weighing down on him without any restraint. Madara and he were busy with their village and clan duties, with Tobirama being the advisor to his idiot brother who had been elected hokage somehow, along with being the Uchiha matriarch, and Madara acting as his other advisor and clan head. They had already been married for two years and were financially and emotionally stable as two shinobi could be and would have no trouble affording the costs that came along with having a child. No, Tobirama worried over whether this pregnancy was even viable and if Madara would want the child growing within him. The two of them were happy and content with their childless life, what if Madara only wanted that? He couldn’t give up his child so easily, the chance of having one in itself was a miracle, but he could never imagine living a life without his dark haired Uchiha. This secret was going to be the literal death of him.
*Knock knock*
Soft knocks from the bathroom doorway ripped Tobirama away from his heavy thoughts, the Senju hurried tucking the test into the pocket of his training pants, calling out swiftly, “Enter!”
He was thoroughly relieved when the calm personage of his sister-in-law appeared in the doorway, a look of caution and soft worry conflicting with her beautiful features as she stepped forward, sliding the door closed behind her.
Comforting pools of inky black washed over his form, the Uzumaki princess coming to kneel beside him, “No one saw me enter. It is just us.”
Relief flooded his system once more, a shaky sigh escaping the albino as he ran a hand through his hair for probably the millionth time in that hour alone, “Thank the gods.”
“If I may ask, what is this sudden need for secrecy Tobirama,” Mito questioned calmly, gazing at him with searching eyes. “Has something happened?”
Here goes nothing…
Slowly retrieving the test hidden within his pants pocket, Tobirama shakily deposited it into his sister-in-law’s hands, and if the situation had been different, Tobirama would have revelled in being able to shake Mito into a state of shock as she was now.
The Uzumaki’s now avid attention shifted from the positive pregnancy test to Tobirama, the redhead murmuring with caution, “Are you certain?”
He gave her a weak nod, his nerves growing with each second. “I can sense another source of chakra developing within me. Its size fits with the time frame of the last time Madara and I slept together without protection eight weeks ago.”
“Does Madara know of this,” Mito replied, face growing stoic once more. His lack of an answer had his brother’s wife sighing, placing the test back within Tobirama’s grip, “I see. I figure this pregnancy was neither planned nor expected.”
Tobirama did his best to reign in his fluctuating emotions, the sensor squeezing his eyes shut, “I presumed having a child of our own would never be a reality, considering our circumstances. We have never discussed having children, Mito; what if he does not want to be a father? I-I cannot just dispose of it.”
Mito shifted her form, a comforting hand coming to rest on his shoulder, “While I cannot speak entirely on your husband’s behalf, Tobirama, I know I can say that he would be over the moon to hear you are with child. Madara treasures the clan children, why would he not adore having his own?”
Both he and Madara treasured the children within the Uchiha clan, spending large amounts of time assisting fellow clan members by babysitting their spawn or teaching them various jutsus. Tobirama had often found himself imagining the dark haired children that often swarmed his husband were their children, excited to see their father after a long day. A reality he never thought possible until now.
Pools of wine, shakened with doubt and worry, came to fall upon Mito’s face of comfort and dignity, “How do I even go about telling him? What if he assumes the child is not his?”
She squeezed his shoulder in reassurance, voice smooth as water and warm as midday sun, “He would have to be stupider than he is now to conclude the child within you is the product of adulterous actions, brother. You simply need to be honest with him, just as you always have been; keeping this secret will only complicate things more.”
“Tobirama, I’m home!”
No, no, no, he wasn’t ready, he-!
It was only Mito’s touch that kept Tobirama grounded in that moment of panic, the Uzumaki stating with confidence, “Some things cannot be kept secret Tobirama. Tell him.”
“Tobirama? Is everything alright -?”
Madara’s familiar figure appeared in the bathroom doorway, the Uchiha’s already concerned face only intensifying as he stopped mid sentence, coming to kneel beside Tobirama with worry, “What has happened?”
Standing to her feet with grace, whilst knocking the pregnancy test out of view, Mito greeted the Uchiha clan head with a small smile, “Nothing that will not right itself in time, my friend. Now please excuse me, I promised my husband of mine that I would have his favorite dish prepared for him before he returns.”
Her gaze shifted to Tobirama with skillful ease, stating calmly, “Have faith Tobirama, all will be well.”
With that, the Uzumaki was gone, and the two men were left to themselves, an awkward silence quickly enveloping their persons due to her absence.
It was Madara who spoke first, the Uchiha taking Tobirama’s bare hand in his gloved one, “Are you alright Tobirama?”
Was he alright? He was eight weeks pregnant with a child he was not even sure had been possible until his discovery, one he was not certain that his husband would want. The Senju had numerous duties to fulfill not just as the advisor to the Hokage and as clan matriarch but also as a sensei to his students; he would not be able to assist them in learning for the following months until the child’s subsequent arrival.
Tobirama swallowed the fear attempting to slither up his throat, hand tightening around Madara’s, “Promise me that you will listen to what I have to say before releasing your judgement Madara.”
“What is going? Tobirama-!”
Steeling himself, Tobirama gave his husband a stern glare, “Promise me.”
Madara shifted uneasily in his position beside Tobirama, answering reluctantly, “I promise to listen.”
An agitated sigh left the sensor, Tobirama doing his best to gather his thoughts, “As you know, I have been experiencing fatigue and bouts of sickness these past few weeks. To better understand the reasons behind my condition, I conducted various tests on myself and whilst running these tests, came across a foreign entity within myself.”
His husband stiffened and moved to speak but Tobirama cut him off before a sound could escape him, “Worried that it was unnatural, I began to run more in depth tests to better understand the origin of this foreign entity.”
“In the end, with my symptoms in mind, I conducted a final test to confirm my suspicions. The results have me anxious about your reaction, because it is something I did not think possible of occurring.”
The clan head gazed at him with wariness, fear present in those beautiful pools of midnight black that Tobirama loves to peer into for hours on end, but Madara’s voice is strong with determination, “Whatever it is Tobirama, we will face it together! Hell, that idiot brother of yours will do everything in his power to fix it!”
A frown formed on Tobirama’s face, the sensor retorting quietly, “This is not something that can be healed Madara-.”
“It cannot hurt to at least try,” Madara shouted, his other hand coming to cup Tobirama’s left cheek. “I refuse to let you die laying down you foolish Senju-!”
Chuckling wetly, tears of anxiety and cautious joy blurred his vision, “I am not dying you Uchiha idiot.”
Confliction of relief and confusion waged on Madara’s personage, “You are not? But you said it was unfixable-!”
Tobirama was quick to cut him off, giving the fiery man a firm look, “If you had let me finish before rudely interrupting me, I was going to tell you that the condition I am in cannot be healed but it will fix itself on its own in seven months time you blockhead!”
Black eyes searched his person, clearly scrambling for answers, and the albino groaned in annoyance, “I swear, you can be as dense as my brother at times! I am trying to tell you that I am pregnant, you imbecile!”
Oh kami, what had he done?
Madara froze in his spot beside Tobirama, staring at him with undetectable emotion, and the sensor instantly was sent into a panic at his reaction, “I know we have never officially discussed having children and I know having a child right now while the village is still so young and with us being so busy is not logical but I want to have this child and I will raise it with or without your approval-!”
Rough lips smothering his own cut him off mid-rant, fiery passion burning brightly in the act of intimacy as his husband’s other hand came to cup his right cheek, and after a few moments of quiet, Madara pulled away, joy shining brightly in his tear-blurred eyes, “How could you ever think that I would not want to have a child with the man I love?”
With that, Tobirama fell apart, silent tears rolling down his cheeks as he timidly replied, “A normal man could never do this.“
“Who said I wanted a normal man,” Madara firmly questioned, eyes stern and passionate. “I married a man who is a genius shinobi in his own right, who also happens to have a condition that has gifted us with a chance to have a child of our own flesh when so many others couples dream of such an opportunity!”
“You are not upset,” Tobirama whispered cautiously.
Madara gave him a shining smile and kissed him once more, tears of his own running down his face as his right hand came to rest on the albino’s flat stomach, “I could never be upset over something like this Tobirama. A child is a gift from the gods; I only pray it has your beautiful mind.”
The Senju stifled a sob at the Uchiha’s confession and Madara rested his forehead against Tobirama’s, allowing him to give his husband soft, comforting kisses.
After a few moments, Tobirama was able to reign himself in, giving Madara a small grin, “Hashirama and Izuna are going to be complete nightmares once they learn I am expecting.”
Scoffing, Madara pulled away, though he didn’t move his hand resting on Tobirama’s abdomen, “Those two buffoons are already nightmares in general. All hell will break loose once they hear they will be receiving a niece or nephew within the year.”
A comfortable silence filled the area for a few minutes before Tobirama spoke once more, “I asked that we do not let anyone know of the baby until at least the twelfth week mark, Mito aside of course; I do not want to get anyone excited in case I happen to miscarry.”
“You are not going to miscarry anything,” Madara stated confidently, moving Tobirama to rest his back against his chest whilst other hand came to join his right one. “But I understand your reasoning and agree to wait until you are ready to share this news.”
Tobirama turned his head to look at his husband, murmuring lovingly, “Thank you Madara.”
His husband pecked his lips, replying fondly, “Anything for you, my husband.”
Some secrets were better worth sharing after all.
Since you already did some groundwork about the kind of dynamic Tobirama and an Uchiha darling would have, would you mind expanding on what their relationship would be like? I'd love to see some more of the Tobirama x Uchiha! Darling! Would also love to see the kind of dynamic Hashirama would have with an Uchiha darling. Bonus points if it includes Madara's reaction to the whole thing. Keep up the good work! Love you!
You already gave me some good informations in the comments you wrote under the soulmate Hc’s for Tobirama and an Uchiha and I used them in here as well.
Tw: Yandere themes, possessive thinking, possessive behavior, arrogant behavior, a lot of arguments
Relationship with an Uchiha
Tumblr media
🌊So let’s get one thing straight. When Tobirama first found out about his feelings for you he was in absolute denial. This man hated the Uchiha his whole life, killed them and even now dislikes them with a burning passion. So he was sure that he must have lost his mind when discovering his romantic feelings.
🌊Tobirama has a strange way of showing his feelings for you. Can you guess how he acted around his darling? Even more mean than he normally was already. Honestly, as soon as you did the smallest mistake he already lectured you about it. And you with your Uchiha pride engaged instantly in the verbal fight, shooting venomous words back until the others interrupted you out of fear you would at any moment claw at each other’s eyes.
🌊Tobirama tried to erase his feelings, was mean to you to make sure you didn’t like him and even tried to avoid you. That was what made him in the end snap. The knowledge of his feelings being so wrong plus the huge stress on his mentality that he had fallen in love with someone from the clan he hated the most almost drove him wild.
🌊Tobirama can’t hide anything from his older bro who was crazily worried over his brother, noticing that something was clearly bothering him. He might not be that smart like Tobirama, but both of them have a really close bond so he sensed it somehow. And if there is one person who Tobi can talk with about this than it’s Hashi. I can see Hashirama as someone who would be so excited because who wouldn’t when his little bro tells him he has fallen in love? I can see him also as someone who would feel even more thrilled because it’s an Uchiha, the clan Tobirama hates the most.
🌊After talking with his brother Tobirama felt a bit more relieved, his brother having him bothered nonstop about getting closer to you and confessing. Kind of hard after insulting you like this. But he tried his best. Since Hashirama was at that time Hokage I think he put the both of you purposely together on missions, very long ones as well to help his bro. Let’s just say the looks you gave him could have actually lit him on fire.
🌊Tobirama continued to point out all your mistakes and nagging about your skills. But as ridiculous as it may sound, he did it now also for the reason to help you realize what you could improve. I don’t say that this is the best way to court someone. But hey, it’s a beginning. Kind of?
🌊There will develop a relationship over time, some kind of love-hate friendship. It would consist of the both of you constantly snapping at each other, pointing out the other’s mistakes and telling each other that you’re the better one. But it will also be this kind of friendship where you know that you can count on each other, no matter in how much trouble the other is.
🌊Tobirama would need a lot of time until confessing to you. He needs to overcome his arrogance and his “I-am-better-than-those-Uchiha” attitude. But I can still see him as someone who would manage to make it sound like an insult at the beginning. It would most likely end with the both of you starting to argue and him shouting somewhere in the middle of it that he wanted to say that he loves you.
🌊Especially at the beginning the relationship would be really shaky. Because both of you would have the “Doesn’t-matter-what-you-do-I-can-do-it-better” mindset. Everything the both of you would do would be basically a challenge to prove that the other one is better. This can be very practical on missions. The other members of the team can literally just sit back and count who manages to overpower more enemies in the end.
🌊I can’t help, but laugh when imagining how the clans reacted when finding this out, especially the darling’s parents. The first meeting between the s/o’s family and Tobirama’s family. It it wouldn’t have been for his older bro who eased the tension a bit you could have probably cut it with a kunai. It was hella awkward.
🌊The first few months were pretty much like a roller coaster. In one moment the both of you could walk calmly next to each other and in the next were suddenly arguing with each other. I can see the darling as a little hothead, not like Tobirama isn’t on the impulsive side as well. So everything that was needed to spark a flame inside of one of you was one misheard sentence. It was especially hard since Tobirama just couldn’t help with often complaining about your clan. And you were very protective of your clan and it’s image.
🌊But I can also see Tobirama being damn proud of his darling. He would never admit that though. But whenever he sees them kicking someone’s ass? He thinks it’s kind of hot. Don’t get the wrong idea. He won’t let his darling surpass him. But what would he be without his little darling who keeps on rivaling him? And I can see the s/o feeling the same way.
🌊Over time this relationship will develop into a “Only-I-am-allowed-to-give-you-a-hard-time” kind of thing. Both of you are very protective over each other and like hell you would let someone hurt your partner. Because here’s the thing. Alone the both of you are already strong strong. But together? An absolute power couple. No one wants to mess with one of you, knowing that the other half will instantly defend their lover.
🌊This scenario popped somehow up in my head. How the Uchiha darling would react when they see someone flirting with Tobi. They would be absolutely like: “Stay away he’s mine to annoy and flirt with.” Can see them as someone who would have little to no shame in smashing their lips on his right in front of the person before walking away like nothing happened. Imagine Tobirama’s face after that.
🌊I need to agree to what you said in your comments. There would be a huge fight before the marriage over whether the darling takes Tobirama’s last name or not since they definitely take pride over carrying the surname Uchiha. I think this will become an issue in the clans as well. I don’t think that they will come to an agreement so I think they would probably settle it with the darling taking on a double surname. Would be the best choice since their family refuses to let their child give up the name of their clan and Tobi’s clan refusing to not add their surname to the darling’s name.
🌊Now for the final Madara’s reaction to all of this. He holds a personal grudge against Tobirama since he’s the one who killed Izuna. He would feel honestly betrayed by the darling and if he knew them personally and was somewhat close to them he would probably also be a bit protective over them. But since he was at that time still not completely consumed by greed I think Hashirama probably managed to convince him that this was an important step for his and Madara’s clan and that everyone should take an example on this. But if he found that out after deciding to go rogue he would view the s/o like a traitor for siding with Tobirama. The type to look down and probably not accept them as a member of his clan anymore.
🌊Lmao! Can’t help, but be amused at the thought about what would happen if a child would come into this picture.
im just so sad about this funky crow ninja
Listen
Listen
Itachi is just
Such a tragic character and it makes me so sad
Like he's a pacifist at heart but he was forced to be the literal opposite at such a young age and I'm just so sAD ABOUT IT
(Under cut cause it’s long and it’s about the uchiha massacre if yall would rather not read bout that But it also has some soft ideas down at the way bottom if yall wanna just speed scroll to the bottom)
How he came to the choice he made regarding the Uchiha massacre totally makes sense to me. It wasn't a good decision, it wasn't a decision best suited for the situation, but it made sense. And it gets worse once you realize that he was 13. Thirteen. No wonder he couldn't find/use a third option. He's still a child, even in this world of child soldiers. He bloodied his hands and wore a mask so that the home he loved and the brother he adored could be safe.
I wish his story could've been written... better, for a lack of proper words. Maybe that is the right word. But I want to see him do more for Konoha. He became a missing nin for Konoha to spy on Akatsuki/Madara but we don't see the results of that. What information does Konoha get from him? Because we know that he's still loyal to Konoha after all this time. Did he do anything to slow Akatsuki down? Did he do things to benefit Konoha or stop something from badly impacting it? What did he do?
And then he dIES AND HE JUST DOESNT GET A BREAK AND IM HHHHH :((((((
And he was sick and going blind too!!!! I swear he was the universe's punching bag (though one of many cause the naruto universe just Be Like That)
Fuck ok I came on here to ramble about Itachi in my au but then got sad sO AU TIME NOW
For one I want to make him.... more sympathetic? A redemption works best when its shown from the start that there is more than meets the eye. Like Zuko, for example. He was a jerk, but there are moments where it's clear that he's not as much of a jerk as he could have been. And I wanted to do something similar with Itachi (and a couple other villains tbh but it's also a matter of "Should you survive" coughObitocough I love you but idk if you survive in this au or not but I have ideas nonetheless but that is for a later time)
Anyways, morally grey but more clearly Itachi
Honestly I've got more ideas for his ending than the beginning. Which is... very annoying. This is unfortunately the case for many... many of my ideas....
An idea I've been juggling with is Itachi not killing everyone. He definitely kills everyone who's activated their sharingan and anyone who is/was a shinobi. So everyone who's not a civilian. So,,, the survivors are very very little and are civilian mothers and civilian children too young to even attend the academy and like the occasional shop owners. The massacre was to stop the coup and prevent it from ever happening, so those who have the power to set forward this coup are any shinobi. And unfortunately, the Uchiha clan is an old shinobi clan.
Itachi is not a blank mask and does cry when he kills his parents and they leave their parting words. He's 13, forced to commit a crime that goes against his every wish, moral, and beliefs. Plus I believe the Uchiha are naturally every emotional- or at least feels it more intensely than others. Their whole defining ability has to do with emotions. They feel Very Strongly.
And thus by "cry" I mean he cries a lot. He almost has a breakdown right then and there when little baby Sasuke crashes in and see his crying older brother holding a bloody blade over his two very dead parents.
For someone willing(ish) to murder a(lmost) a whole clan for the sake of his little brother, Itachi sure does directly hurt Sasuke a lot. Like genjutsu torture? Placing responsibility of avenging a whole clan on his tiny, angry shoulders? Oof, Itachi, bad ideas.
So Itachi wants Sasuke to be safe. To be happy to the best of his ability. So instead, he uses a milder form of Tsukuyomi to place a suggestion in his baby mind that Itachi was in fact a cold hearted murderer. But the human mind is a strange thing that is difficult to understand, so for years Sasuke has nightmares of that night with his perception of Itachi varying wildly between a stone cold face and a tear-stained one.
Itachi doesn’t do the whole “hate me and kill me for vengeance” because, again, he wants Sasuke to be safe and happy. Considering that he lives in a shinobi village and just had a highly traumatic experience, both are hard to come by, but the least Itachi can do is not have Sasuke’s whole life be overcome by hatred. Curse of Hatred is a very real thing, Itachi. I know you want Sasuke to have a goal to drive him forward and not waste away but bad idea Itachi. Maybe he says something else. Maybe he tells Sasuke to get stronger (but not in a “so you can get revenge” kind of way). I don’t know. But he doesn’t quite plant the idea of vengeance in his mind, so Sasuke’s motivation and drive ends up differently. Butterfly effects oho Also since Sasuke unlocked his sharingan during the massacre... is it possible to activate mangekyo as well? Cause he loves Itachi most, yes, but he also loved his parents, his mom especially. Would that be enough? Wiki says “death of someone close to the user”, so it’s possible, I think.
So many ideas about the massacre holy shit
Like Shisui. I’d totally love to make him live but frankly, I’ve got no idea how. :”D sorry Shisui, you’ll have to stay dead until I can find a solid reasoning as to how you survived and why
As for Madara/Tobi, well in anime he went after the Police headquarters while Itachi went after everyone else so there’s that, not much to change there
Then there’s a whole bunch of aftermath hijinks
Itachi is said to have aided Konoha within Akatsuki, but it’s not very clearly shown. Considering how we aren’t shown what exactly he passed on, that will be uh.... perhaps expanded on later.
Sasuke and Itachi interactions before Shippuden would be different due to Sasuke’s own differences, but those differences haven’t be set yet so that will be explained later.
Ok, now the whole Itachi dying and being reincarnated shebang. Fourth War sure is wild as fuck. “Let’s mass reincarnate people!” what.
I don’t want Itachi to die. I want to let him rest. But not in death.
So the general idea I have for the “end” of the story is:
He becomes legally blind. Not completely blind, but very close. His chakra coils are fucked and his sharingan are stuck in a way that he can kinda see chakra but very vaguely.
His illness isn’t completely healed, but it’s much better than before; Sakura and Tsunade are legendary at what they do
He returns home to Konoha. Not sure how he will be accepted into the village but I was thinking the village makes a half-lie half-truth story pinning the blame on Danzo (Cause when in doubt, blame Danzo. Or Zetsu. But Zetsu isn’t blamable here)
He may not be imprisoned, but he isn’t free to roam. He’s monitored and has a (temporary?) seal placed on him limiting his use of chakra.
Itachi is surprisingly ok with all of this. He gets to retire from a shinobi life and he’s unraveled the story to Sasuke and was gifted a form of forgiveness. Life’s chill.
He works at the Yamanaka flower shop. It’s calming, peaceful, and it’s run by Yamanaka, powerful shinobi and also knowledgeable on psychology.
His crows are now seeing eye crows. They sit on either his shoulders or head and squawk whenever Itachi is too close to bumping into something. Sasuke very much enjoys when the crows are on Itachi’s head because when he tosses little treats at the birds, sometimes they land in Itachi’s hair.
It’s very hard for the shinobi to fear this honestly tiny man (because Itachi is small, fight me) who’s humming while watering plants with a bird on top of his head while the various heroes of Konoha take turns tossing treats at the bird like it’s a dog.
“Nii-san. Nii-san stop squishing my cheeks.” “But Sasuke I want to see your face.” “Nii-san-”
oh my god so much brain power used on the massacre just so i could make itachi have a very domestic ending
Things we deserved to get from the Naruto manga and anime that we never got -
• JONIN NARUTO -
Tumblr media
We followed him around as the lovable Genin knucklehead. Now it goes without saying that him being a Jonin is just a rank and honestly doesnt mean much. Rescuing Gaara, going after Kakuzo, Mount Miyaboku were all A & S-rank missions.
But I would liked to have seen him doing missions post war in a slightly more mature yet typically knuckleheaded manner instead of the passing phrase he made tonShikamaru about being too busy doing missions for the next 6 months.
We grew up with Naruto and now that he's older and stronger we dont get to see him in action.
• A Happily Married Kakashi & Shizune-
Hatake Kakashi has led a deeply traumatic life. His mother died when he was very young, his father committed suicide when he was 6 causing him to distance himself from everyone around him. The first person he opened up to and formed a bond with died moments later protecting him, the girl he deeply cared for and probably harbored feelings for which he was too afraid to confront died at his hands as he desperately tried to protect her, a year later his sensei died protecting the village. When he became a sensei to Team 7 he felt he was on a path to finding inner peace by ensuring these children avoid his traumas but his prized pupil went rogue shattering that hope. After all this I’d hoped he would’ve finally found a happy ending.
Why Shizune? Well I considered him and Kurenai getting together and him helping raise Mirai but Shizune has always felt like the only Kunoichi in Konoha who has her shit together. She is perfectly at peace with where she is in life. She is incredibly mature and level headed as she helps run the village with Tsunade. Someone who is at peace with herself and her aspirations is the perfect anchor for a man with a whirpool of trauma brewing in him.
Alas it seems like the showrunners have no intention of a romantic arc for Kakashi and the Hatake name will die with Kakashi.
• The Uzumaki Clan
Within a span of 3 months Naruto meets 3 Uzumaki clan members. Nagato, Karin and his own mother. While speaking with Kushina he finds out about the dark fate of the Uzumaki clan. How they were blessed with unimaginably high chakra reserves and were gifted in Sealing Jutsus, longevity and how it led to them being targeted by those who feared them leading to their village being wiped out and scattered across the shinobi world.
Instead of turning the Naruto saga into the Uchiha Chronicles Id have preferred a deep dive into the Uzumaki clan. Maybe even have a Sasuke-like venegeful figure who wants Konoha to suffer because they failed to provide aid to the village they called their strong allies in their greatest hour of need.
Like Sasuke this villain would’ve witnessed his fellow clansmen cut down, unlike Sasuke however he wouldn’t have had the likes of Naruto, Itachi or Kakashi to anchor him in the light leaving room for redemption.
This could have been the one villain that was so far gone in his pain and hatred that no amount of 'talk no jutsu' could have changed his mind and would've pushed Naruto to the very brink until he finally had to choose between killing his clansman or protecting his village.
Naruto would make the ultimate sacrifice for Konoha and this would all the more set his resolve to pulling Sasuke back from the darkness or dying with him.
An Uzumaki villain gifted in Fuijutsu and the use of the Uzumaki Kekkei Genkai, the Adamantine Chains along with massive chakra reserves would be the perfect power scaled villain for Post Pain Arc Naruto.
Instead we got Uchiha chronicles where everyone did whatever the fuck they thought of doing and chakra limits were all but history. This one really disappointed me. Which brings me to my next disappointment.
• Naruto Killing a Villain
Now I know it seems like an odd hang up. Naruto? Kill? But he is so fixated on redemption. That is exactly why I wanted this to happen. The series has gone out of its way to make sure Naruto hasn’t killed a character. The worst of it was against Kakuzu. The kind of attack unleashed upon Kakuzu SHOULD by all means have killed him. Yet somehow he was left in a ‘dying state’ and Kakashi was the one who did the deed.
Naruto being forced to kill a villain as a last resort and making a choice between saving someone dear to him or tainting his hands with blood was the ultimate moral conundrum for a shinobi whose biggest goal was rescuing his best friend from the dark. It would take him back to Itachi’s words where he asked Naruto what he would if Sasuke decided to destroy the village.
Instead we saw Rasen Shuriken and Rasengan getting scaled down to a point where they always injure and opponent but not kill him. For an S-rank jutsu, Rasen Shuriken happens to be quite lenient.
• Neji beoming the head of the Hyuuga Clan
Tumblr media
This pisses me off the most. Neji was supposed to be to the Hyuuga was Naruto was to Konoha. I always expected Neji to overcome all the obstacles and get recognized by Hiashin who would then redeem himself and disband the branch system once and for all. Hiashin as a character was never redeemed. Here was a man who let his brother get executed to avoid punishment (albeit he was against it but it did happen), constantly abused his kind daughter and belittled her for being too soft and put her down to a point her personality was underdeveloped and she had deep seethed confidence issues.
Disbanding the branch system and making Neji the leader would redeem him in the eyes of the readers/ viewers and would clean up the Hyuuga clan.
Instead Neji was scrapped aside to give Naruto and Hinata a bonding moment. They had a bonding moment, it was when she almost died saving his life. Neji didn’t have to die for them to get together ffs. What a wasted potential.
• NaruSaku
Tumblr media
Now I’m not a fanatic shipper. In fact when I read and watched the original series I absolutely HATED Sakura. My hatred for her reached it’s peak during the Zabuza arc when Naruto ran at the S-rank villain, got kicked away and got up to show he went in for his forehead protector. “What do you think you’re doing Naruto? Even Sasuke-kun wasn’t a match for him.” I just wanted Naruto to turn around and tell her to stfu in that moment. As the series approached the time skip I was well and truly content with NaruHina.
Tumblr media
But Shippuden changed things. The hints towards Sakura’s changed feelings were sprinkled all over the series. One moment that stands out for me was the Clone Training arc where Sai tests her by abusing Naruto and she goes on a rage rant about how great he is. Let’s not forget that in her darkest hour, as she saw a ruined and destroyed village the only person she thought of and cried out to was Naruto. Not because she felt he could save the village (she was as shocked as Shikamaru as she found out he was facing pain alone) but because when things when bad for her the only person who she felt comfort around was indeed Naruto and that is indisputable.
Tumblr media
She goes as far as ruining her friendship with Naruto, a bond she truly cherished as it was all she had left after Sasuke abandoned the village, and confessed her feelings to manipulate him. Yes manipulative, scheming and downright a bitch of a thing to do. But it was all she could think of to make Naruto stop chasing after Sasuke. She, more than anyone wanted to see Naruto become a Hokage and realize his dreams and dying while rescuing Sasuke was a risk she couldn’t take and she decided she’d have him hate her than die. Wrong yes. But oddly noble.
Tumblr media
This combined with all the blatant attempts to establish her being like Kushina and Kushina saying she wants Naruto to find someone like her changed my mind from NaruHina. I still adore Hinata. She is a wonderful character. But organic plot progression is far more important to me than my ships being canon.
Tumblr media
A Naruto-Sakura family would’ve been incredibly entertaining and the dynamics would be perfect. We’d see a Minato-Kushina couple on screen for the next series. Which brings me to my next disappointment.
•HinaShino
I don’t know if that’s the official name for the pairing but I always felt these 2 would make a great couple.They are both people of a few words and are both incredibly intuitive and understanding individuals. Shino would accept Hinata for who she was and vice versa. Being with someone who was happy with the person they were would go miles in helping them come out of their shells.
Altho this isn’t a massive disappointment for me. I’m happy that Hinata ended up with Naruto. But like I said organic plot progression matters to me and if Naruto ended up with Sakura I’d prefer Hinata to end up with Shino.
•Hiraishin No Jutsu
Tumblr media
Sadly as the series progressed Naruto had become so OP that not letting him master his father’s improved version of Tobirama’s jutsu was a great decision. It would’ve just made him senselessly OP.
However instead of giving him all those God Tier power ups which he just gains in single training sessions I’d have preferred him working hard to master the Hirashin. Instead of sending him off to an island and treating him like a fucking idiot and asking him to survey animals I’d have preferred if Tsunade gave him an impossible task.
“You can’t fight in the battle. But I will only allow it if you can master your father’s jutsu.”
It was a period of 6 months between Danzo’s death and the start of the shinobi war. Ample time to show him training hard to learn a jutsu that for once required him to study. Hiraishin deals not just in physical acts of speed but also mastering seals.  Seeing his friends go off to fight in the war as he was left behind would have only added to his frustration and motivated him more.
Showing Naruto training hard like they showed him training for Rasen Shuriken would’ve only made us cheer all the more harder when he’d make a badass entry on the battle field as Tobi came close to killing Kakashi and a three pronged Kunai swished between the two, an orange flash appeared and Naruto kicked Tobi away.
Sadly this was swapped for Pokemon evolutions where arc after arc Naruto levels up just like that. The show’s entire premise was based on hard work and guts.
Sasuke was the genius who gained his power through natural ability. Sure he trained hard but his strength came to him with ease. Naruto had to slog. He manged to make the Rasengan after nearly 15 episodes of training and even then he had to get stabbed to be able to use it. It wasn’t until another 10 episodes that he properly used it. His training for the Rasenshuriken took an entire season to yield results and even then he didn’t learn to throw it until he trained for another 3 seasons till the Pain arc.
Post pain all this is tossed aside. He sits at the waterfall twice and beats the darkness. He sits in the room once and tames Kurama. Later Kakashi and Guy are in trouble, he has an inner dialogue with Kurama and suddenly he mastered the two man team with no prior training. Rikkodu Sennin touches him once and suddenly he’s learnt how to grow eyes, stop death and fly just like that.
The series stopped being the Naruto series we grew up with post Danzo and it saddens me.
• Naruto Sensei -
Tumblr media
And finally my last and greatest disappointment of all. Not seeing Naruto as a sensei. We’ve seen glimpses of his nurturing side in his interactions with Konohamaru but I’d have loved to have seen 40-50 episodes of him leading his own squad of genins. A perfect combination of Kakashi and Guy as he’d wow them with his brilliance and equally embarrass them in day to day interactions with his goofy tomfoolery. His genins would be in awe of him. Naruto Sensei - the hero of the war.
His students could have an arrogant son/daughter of a feudal lord who insisted he be trained by the war hero, Naruto and Kakashi had to cave in for diplomatic reasons. Naruto refuses to take anyone who doesn’t work hard to get where they are but after the bell test sees potential in the child. A child with no ninja background. His parents were farmers outside of Konoha who were very poor. His sole aim is to be a ninja so strong that he’s always assigned big missions that will help him ease his family’s financial burdens. A genin from the Inuzuka clan (or any other clan, maybe even Hanabi if the show wanted to push more Naruto-Hinata interactions) who thinks he’s better than the other 2 because of his family background but is taught humility by Naruto.
Sadly another development in Naruto’s life we were denied.
Well that’s my rant essay. I know a lot of people won’t agree with what I had to say but I wanted to get it off my best anyway. Why?
Because I wanted to dattebayo!
Chapter 16
His eyes could see the man standing there in the doorway but his heart refused to accept that this was happening. The only thing inside his head right then was a tiny voice that sounded suspiciously like himself as a child crying out that he wasn’t ready, he just wasn’t ready for this yet. Honestly there was no way to tell if he would have ever been ready no matter this his heart had wanted this right from the very start.
But the universe rarely cared for whether or not one was ready for something and Tobirama had known he would have to deal with this eventually when he agreed to move in to the village. No one could stay hidden completely forever, not if he wanted to start taking missions again at some point since putting his name on the roster would have been a dead giveaway. The surprise of it all was his own fault, really. If he had been infusing chakra to keep his sensing abilities active then he would have felt their guest approaching and disappeared long before the surprise meeting happened. It seemed even he was growing complacent in the safety of their new home; he’d stopped keeping his sensing active so often after the first couple of weeks. He sort of regretted that now.
“Hashirama,” he softly greeted the man stared at him. Izuna shuffled a bit closer and Tobirama felt his heart swell even as he gently touched his friend on the arm to let him know that it was okay. Hashirama was hardly going to attack him or anything but it was nice to know that if he tried anything else there was someone here that wouldn’t let it happen.
“You’re…here. You’re here. You’re alive.” His eyes were quickly filling with tears and Tobirama blinked, nonplussed.
“Did you think I was dead?”
Hashirama took one step forward and then jerked to a stop when Izuna snarled protectively. “Oh god you’re here! Touka – she followed your trail until it disappeared. We didn’t know what to think. I…please. Please believe me, I never stopped looking. I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, Tobi!”
“You have no right to address him in such a familiar way,” Izuna growled. “You have no rights here! Not to talk to him! Not to apologize to him! Not even to look at him!”
“Izu, it’s alright.”
“No it isn’t! He sent you away! He broke you! Everything that you’ve gone through in the past year is his fault and he should know that! He should know exactly what sort of cowardly, conniving, backstabbing, shameful, kinless, asshole-”
“I do know! Not a day goes by that it doesn’t haunt me but I didn’t mean to! Tobi, please, I never wanted any of this to happen, I beg you to believe that!” Hashirama took another step forward but this time he had eyes only for the one he had turned away more than a year before, barely seeming to notice the way Izuna snarled at him again. “I have scoured every inch of every place I could possibly think of since that day to try and find you because I love you! Of course I love you! I…I would understand…if can you never forgive me. Or if you don’t even want to speak to me again. What I did was terrible and awful and I don’t think I would forgive me either in your position. Kami knows you shouldn’t. But I…”
Tobirama crossed his arms behind the protective barrier of Izuna’s body and held his own chest tightly for fear that he would fly to pieces if he didn’t. But he listened. How could he not? After everything he had gone through he still loved this man more than his own life. Just hearing that beloved voice again was a balm on the withered corners of his heart.
“You deserve a real apology. And to know that I regret everything. If you are willing to listen I will explain what happened and anything else you want to know but please understand that I am not offering that as an excuse. I should never have – well. You know. I should not have done what I did to you. I want nothing more in this world than for you to come home, to have my brother back.” Tears streamed freely down Hashirama’s cheeks and his expression had never been more broken. It was surprisingly difficult for Tobirama to watch. Logically he thought he should have enjoyed this petty revenge for all the pain he had suffered but here in this moment all he wanted was for his big brother to stop crying.
Still he continued to say nothing, only stood there and let the man get through what needed to be said. From the half-coherent way he was stringing himself together instead of blubbering aimlessly it was clear that he had practiced this speech quite a bit and the thought of that was oddly touching. To think of the man picturing this moment, preparing for it, spending the precious hours of so many days thinking about it just as Tobirama himself had, it was a comforting thought.
“If you have it in your heart to let me then I will spend the rest of my life apologizing and making sure you always know how much I love you. How much I regret doing what I did to you. I will make up for the wrongs I have committed in whatever way you deem fit. But if you…if you want nothing more to do with me then I am prepared for that too and no one could ever blame you for it. I promise that I will accept whatever decision you make without arguing. You hate it when I argue. Just please know that I am sorry.” Wilting as ran out of words, Hashirama drew in a shuddering breath and whispered once more, “I’m so sorry Tobi, brother, if I may call you that one more time.”
Then he fell utterly still in a way he would normally be incapable of to await his judgement. It wasn’t in him to deceive, Tobirama knew that very well, so every word that had just come out of his mouth was entirely sincere. Hashirama had never been the type for any sort of manipulation, much preferring open honesty. It was something he used to tease the man for – when he wasn’t also dealing out irritated lectures on giving their enemies too much leeway. What he had said was probably a mish mash of a hundred different speeches that he must have laid awake preparing in the inevitability they ever found each other again.
And now Tobirama had to decide how much honesty to give in return. No matter how many hours he too had sat by himself and imagined this moment he had never been able to decide exactly how he wanted to react, what he wanted to do. Hashirama was sincere in his words now but could he trust that something like this would never happen again?
Could he survive this twice?
With one more tight squeeze he unfolded his arms and ran both hands through his hair. As much as he would like to ask for more time to think about his reply he knew it wouldn’t help. The best thing to do now was something he had always been terrible at: following his heart. And his heart was crying out for Hashirama to drag him in for a big hug just like old times, which the man wouldn’t do if Tobirama didn’t tell him it was okay. Overzealous he might be but he did understand boundaries when they were given. First, however, there were certain things he had to make clear.
“You hurt me,” he began slowly. “You took everything I have and everything I am away from me. When you sent me away you broke a part of me that I had always believed unbreakable because I trusted that my family – you – would always be beside me. Would always believe in me. But…if you hadn’t then I wouldn’t have what I do now. What you did was not okay. Saying sorry does not make it right.” He watched Hashirama’s face crumple and added softly, “It’s a start though.”
“So you…you don’t hate me?” For such a big man he sounded incredibly small. Tobirama sighed.
“No. I don’t think I’m capable of hating you.”
Izuna huffed and muttered, “You should.” Before Tobirama could scold him Hashirama echoed his sigh, scratching at the back of his head with shame on his face.
“He’s right, you should hate me. But I’m glad you don’t and I just can’t tell you how much it means to me that you don’t. Gods above, Tobi, I’m sorry. If I could take it all back I would in a heartbeat.”
“None of us can change the past.” And if he were honest he wasn’t sure he would.
Yes, he had been through hell and worse trying to work his way through what had happened to him but the beautiful things he had gained along the way, weren’t they worth it? Could he ever say that he would give them up for the chance to go back and live as if none of this ever happened? He couldn’t imagine waking up to any face but Madara’s for the rest of his life. He couldn’t imagine never cooking breakfast with Izuna or helping Kagami with his kata forms or listening to the old lady down the street complain about her nephew coming home late every night.
Tobirama looked at the tense man still standing like an immovable barrier between them and bit down on the inside of his cheek. Maybe this wasn’t what he had asked for but being with the Uchiha was where he needed to be, even if it had taken him a long time to admit that it also the place he now wanted to be.
Breaking the news that he would never be ‘going home’ as his brother had phrased it would not be easy but after all the work and time that had gone in to making his place here he had absolutely no intentions of leaving, not for anything. If Hashirama still loved him as much as the man claimed then he would have to accept that. Living in the same village, it wasn’t as if they would never see each other again just because they wouldn’t be living in the same house again.
With trembling hands plucking at each other nervously, Hashirama drew a few trembling breaths and looked around as though hoping to find a few answers for their myriad problems written on the walls.
“So can we…I don’t know where to go from here,” he said. “Would you like to come over for dinner tomorrow? Would that be okay? You can tell me whatever crazy story led to me finding you…in the Uchiha district. I’m sure that one’s a doozy.”
“I don’t know that I would be comfortable going in to Senju territory just yet. A restaurant maybe?”
Hashirama flinched but nodded understandingly. Then he shifted his weight back and forth until it began to look like a dance, fingers wringing themselves together while he darted his eyes away and back, away and back, gathering his courage to finally blurt out what was really on his mind.
“Can I hug you? If you’re uncomfortable that’s okay, I won’t! I just had to ask! I’m sorry, I’ve just missed you so much and now you’re here, you’re alive, and I just – I want to hold on to you and never let go. I never should have let you go in the first place!” The force of his own rambling left him panting for breath, his hands going still to clasp each other again as his expression settled in to the familiar puppy-eyed gaze he used when he only wanted someone to let him show them his love. Tobirama folded in on himself, feeling like nothing so much as a little boy again, and nodded ever so slightly.
“Yes please,” he said.
“Oh thank kami!” Hashirama lunged around Izuna to throw himself at Tobirama, engulfing him with both arms and burying his face in pale hair. As soon as Tobirama hesitantly patted him on the back he let out a muffled sob that sounded like a confused mixture of sad and happy.
Tobirama melted in to the embrace, afraid to close his eyes just in case it wasn’t real, desperately trying not to break the spell. It took everything in him not to whimper with relief. Hashirama’s scent filled his nose, the warmth of his hug, the home-bright-welcoming feeling of his chakra, it was everything he’d thought he would spend the rest of his life quietly yearning for and then feeling stupid for doing so. He loved his place among the Uchiha, he truly did. But he had loved Hashirama first and it was the sort of love that just never goes away no matter how the staying aches.
A large patch on his shoulder was soaked through with tears by the time the front door opened and Madara’s chakra hurried in to the house feeling tense and purposeful. Tobirama didn’t give much thought to moving, too caught up in his own drama to think about whether he might cause more, so he was just as surprised as Hashirama when they were suddenly wrenched apart for Madara to angrily drag him aside.
“Get away from him!” he was shouting, eyes red and spinning wildly, immediately taking up the same defensive stance as Izuna had before. Hashirama looked devastated to be separated again so soon and Tobirama couldn’t say he felt much different, though he managed to calmly lay his hand on Madara’s wrist.
“It’s alright. I’m okay.”
“Are you sure?” Madara pinned Hashirama in place with a dangerously sharp look and waved at an all too willing Izuna to watch him before turning to gather Tobirama in both arms and press their foreheads together, stroking the markings on his cheeks. “What did he say to you? If I had known he was coming I would have intercepted him, I swear. Koemi came to get me but all she said was that there was an emergency here at home and to come at once. Are you sure you’re alright?”
Tobirama smiled helplessly, charmed by how much this man cared for his wellbeing. “Yes, I’m fine.”
“Good.” Madara pet his cheeks a few more times and then gently guided his chin up to gift him with a soft, lingering kiss.
“EH!?” They jolted apart again to look over at where Hashirama had dropped his jaw down to somewhere around his knees, staring at them like they had both grown several new heads. “What are you–? HUH!?”
“Ah. Yes.” Tobirama tilted his head contemplatively. “I hadn’t quite gotten around to explaining anything to him yet. Perhaps we should all sit down; it’s going to take a while to get the whole story out. Especially so because I know I am going to be interrupted a hundred times by each of you.” He rolled his eyes and patted Madara consolingly when his partner gave Hashirama one more suspicious look, still holding him protectively close.
On his part, Hashirama looked like he was ready to faint. He didn’t seem to be dealing very well with so many surprises. Tobirama herded them all towards the living with a faintly worried crease between his brows and hoped that his wayward sibling was up for just a few more shocks.
He wasn’t looking forward to explaining that he had spent several weeks as a prisoner of the man he was now in a relationship with.
Ah hello. I just wanted to say I absolutely adore your writing. I love, "To Regret and Die." I think it's so well written. How did you come up with the idea of it? Have a nice day and keep up with the incredible work!
Awe thank you so much! I am so flattered to hear you enjoy it so much, and my writing! It’s been a long haul to get it where it is and it’s so nice to know it’s appreciated (but don’t worry, it’s only gonna keep improving!)
To Regret and Die started fairly differently. I knew I wanted Tobirama traded to the Uchiha’s (because I love the enemies forced to go be together and play nice together trope) and I wanted to write Tobi and Madara. I love their dynamic. At first I was going to keep Izuna there, but then figured he may be too much for me to write into the story, as well as it not making sense Tobirama was traded and Izuna not (and I didn’t want a kidnapped Tobi or anything). So that’s how that started.
I’m also studying psychology and have studied abuse, so I wanted to add in some semi-realism to that because I believe Tobirama was abused because uh, yeah, his dad seemed like a dick. And no spoilers for the future of the fic- but yeah. I wanted to give more a reason for his abuse though, and wrote in his being the ‘White Devil’ and put an explanation to that at the end of that chapter. Long story short, I love folklore and added some of that in, as well as humans long history of hating and fearing and hurting anyone who is different.
Then came Hikaku. He was a bit of a surprise for me too. I didn’t expect him to have such a large role, but as I wrote my mind was like “yes. This chemistry. Mooooore” So he became a big role in the story, one I really, really like.
But long story short (too late) I started with the trope “enemies having to play nice” and made it the Tobirama traded for Peace. I worked out the ‘politics’ of the matter, and made Izuna and Tobi switch places. I researched abuse and folklore to get Toni’s backstory, and created Hikaku’s character for self indulgence.
More plot wise: the trope, and then a loose outline of pure self indulgence, and a lot of winging it. Like the thing with the shadow clones from the lates chapter? I was daydreaming, thought of it, added it in. I didn’t plan for it to happen, but it is now, and then I planned how to work that into the outline.
I think a lot of greatness comes from spontaneous thought, so I try not to overplan, and I encourage you to try writing this way. Plan enough to know where to go, but not too much that makes the story feel forced.
I hope that helps! I didn’t want to give anything away for the future, and still answer the question!
long rambling reflection on my history as a naruto fan and why im deep in kabuto stan mode atm
soo i have been a naruto fan for a uhhh long ass time (17 years now?) and i was deep in fandom for ages before falling off sometime around the start of the war arc...it started with the emotional blow of losing jiraiya (me and a friend read the chapter when it released and just clung to each other sobbing lol, well written, just sad)...the dumbassery of pain resurrecting everyone.....mr sasuke choosing to honor itachi's legacy with destruction....i had not read it in a bit when my friend called me up to ask if i had read the most recent chapter cuz NEJI DIED and i literally lay on a dark basement couch all day sobbing and was deep in grief like couldn't eat or sleep for like the next 2 weeks....i started reading again in bits to see if neji would resurrect (HE DIDNT) and if his legacy would be honored (....) but whatever it was just endless uchiha clusterfucking so i got bored and dropped again, only really returning for Magical Brother Soulmates naruto and sasuke (#NEJI WAS RIGHT) and then the last chapters to see how it ended and gape at the endgame pairings & inojin, the most bizarre looking mf ...
(At least orochimaru ended up okay and pretty, I decided)
anyways, i've consumed a lot of what i missed in my off periods but one thing i never really consumed was the war arc A) cuz im a filthy bitter neji stan until the day i die B) as someone who crusaded hard for tobi NOT to be obito (as i loved them separately but knew if they were combined i would lose all sympathy and affection) (my naruto forum username was literally tobi-chan) and that twist makes my teeth gnash as it's just kinda a bad character story, obito hate club here, and that leading to aforementioned uchiha gangbanging and SPACE ALIEN REINCARNATION PROPHECY MAGIC, something so utterly divorced from what naruto's story used to be... yeah
(have i ever stopped writing my post series neji lives shikaneji epic tho?? no!)
now the other day i saw a mention was like, kabuto is more dragon then snake. i always did wonder about the horns...so i went to go reread the hilarious kabumaru reveal which led to many a joke back in those old forum days -- the chapter was being weirdly hard to find tho and i kept getting distracted by other chapters referenced on his nwiki page and i ended up reading a lot of his backstory (knew in general but) andwar arc stuff, especially him v itachi n sasuke, which i had missed
And i was like? Oh? Heres kishi writing style I've been missing + maturity gained from time? sasuke calling itachi perfect when itachi sympathizes with kabuto because sasuke is too emotionally immature to have that capacity, the submission of identity to authority that drove them to extremes w kabutachi vs sasuke being driven to extremes by well. trauma induced personality but still, his personality, you know, who he simply is ... sasuke then leading into having to resurrect mentor/parental figure orochimaru and ninja presidents to figure out "who am i" which was really "can i choose to help konoha and pals while still being me"
and theres kabuto...forced to Accept Himself by itachi's brainwashing (itachi, who has always had teeth, always been pleasant, always taught) ... kabuto standing there ... orochimaru (who bore witness to all this drama from his cosy place on anko's neck) feeling so much more tired than he has after any other resurrection, giving kabuto those inscrutable looks, removing his presence from kabuto in an absolution, an apology, a return to self that leaves kabuto looking so young and tired and empty), telling sasuke he's fine how he is and also, still young, knowledge inherently ages you in a way trauma, power, and the passage of years can't
(i cant believe orochimaru was trying to stop sasuke for his own purposes. he manipulated sasuke but he never stopped him. ntm following that path allowed orochimaru to get his arms back and just have some fun trolling the mage, so it was a path for from detrimental to him.)
he wants sasuke to keep what childhood, what sentimentality he can -- again, acting the parent
and there's kabuto still. a 'brother son student'* to him, one of his oldest orphans, a follower so loyal and useful orochimaru would never make a vessel out of him even when desperate, and yet kabuto in his search for identity did it anyways -- (remember how he offered himself to oro, back in that whole rotting arms, late sasuke era?) and later orochimaru essentially tells his old teacher (a parental figure to himself) that the reason he's gonna bat for the good guys is because he saw what Trying To Be Like Him led kabuto and the world to, and he wants to, essentially, do better with this child under his charge and instead of imposing his will, see what sasuke can do with All The Knowledge At His Disposal
he told kabuto to form a self around knowledge, but it was knowledge for sake of power ... a descent to madness he himself took from a quiet, helpful child ... as character parallels go, orochimaru has very little in common with sasuke and much more in common with kabuto
"shape them in his own image ..."
now orochimaru was never guardian of the year, what with the fufufu-ing and child experiments, but i disagree with assumptions that the loyalty he inspired was entirely down to Stockholm or fear, because at the end of the day, orochimaru did as many horrific experiments on himself as he did unto others. leadership thru example.
then there's kabuto. kabuto who has hated, tried to kill, resented, feared orochimaru, but also kabuto who also loved and admired orochimaru, saw him as his home, was someone whose company he generally seemed to enjoy, someone he wanted to both be and surpass. someone inspiring
kabuto and orochimaru are alike, so kabuto tried to supplant his identity with the assumption that being alike = having walked the same path = being identical and eventually had to face that he couldn't both love orochimaru and be him, that it was a twisted mirror, that all he has ever been or would ever be was someone who had to make his decisions based not on history or blood or origin or culture, but on what made him happy
so, the orphanage, a home that does not move or die, a brother whom he can love and admire who is so different from him its not a twisted mirror ... a kabuto and orochimaru who do not seem to have interacted in a very long time, but for the whole, they didnt exactly part hatefully or on bad terms, and thus a kabuto who could just as easily make the choice to never see orochimaru again as he could to see orochimaru, if he wants to, if he's sure enough in his own identity to not worry about losing himself again ... he finally has choice, even if he, orochimaru, and sasuke are all restrained by the ethical limits of konoha atm
and uh yeah characters who struggle with their identity & the control others can then exert over them are a favourite of mine?
so what this memoir/meta tl;dr is is just me working out my thoughts this fine friday morning on how yakushi kabuto has, like, objectively, one of the best character arcs in all of naruto -- hell, maybe THE best, and i am sorry to have missed it when it was coming out because just. damn. that's good writing, y'all!
The Last to Know [3 /5]
Blanket Fic Disclaimer
Beta Reader: None right now. Check back later.
Warning: Some language
AN: Not sure how I feel about this one. It’s my first bit of writing since taking a break, so maybe I’m just holding it to a higher stander? Anyhow, I will eventually go through it again later. I just thought I should post something for my birthday, and this was the closest thing to do.
First Chapter
Sakura is shaking after she leaves the Hokage’s office, both with anger and a little fear.
She’s nervous about her outburst, keeps running over the entire thing in her head. She has never lost control like that, not really, even when Kakashi was her instructor and did things she was critical of. Even with Naruto, they’ve had arguments, but she’s never…
She has never attacked her teacher before. And she’s never lost her temper to the point of vulgarity before.
Did I go too far? Sakura wonders, rubbing her upper arms self-consciously. Or not far enough?
Sakura has always been guided by her heart and what feels right to her; it’s only in recent years, being so close to Lady Tsunade and the running of the village that she’s had to think more with her head.
And I never was really good at that anyhow, she thinks glumly. Images come back to her of a bridge and a knife, hateful scarlet eyes and a woman with glasses bleeding out in front of her. Every time she has tried to make a decision where her head and her heart disagreed, no good has come of it.
Right now, her heart insists she did right, but her brain keeps running over all of the logical arguments against her actions. She hasn’t felt so conflicted since the war, and it’s dizzying. She needs to take a step back from it somehow, to release the growing painful pressure inside her before bursts.
Her first instinct is to go to Ino, but she knows she can’t. As yet, this is all still utterly secret; she can’t reveal anything about Itachi to Ino. She could, however, mention being kept in the dark by her other teammates.
Except...
Except her best friend is at home with Sai right now, enjoying newly married life. Though he is also one of Sakura’s closest friends, she doesn’t want to overshadow his newfound happiness with her black mood. Especially considering his own past, he deserves as much uncomplicated joy as life has to offer him.
Sakura’s mother would be her next choice, but the thing is, Mebuki Haruno has a blind spot when it comes to Kakashi and Naruto. Considering Kakashi is the Hokage and Naruto the hero that saved them all, she’s taken on a tendency to agree with them about everything. And she knows Sakura well enough to infer that Sasuke is somehow involved...
Mebuki has never been overly fond of Sasuke after he defected from Konoha, to put things mildly.
She’d say they were right to keep it from me, Sakura thinks, clenching her fist. She can’t blame her mother, not really; a parent’s duty is to protect their child. Mebuki’s feelings on the matter would be totally justified simply because she has never been on the frontlines or fought beside Sakura. Intellectually, her parents know what Sakura is capable of, but they have never seen it first hand. And they weren’t there to see the obstacles she’s overcome to achieve the power she has now.
Not in the way Naruto and Kakashi are. Those are the people who should know better, and yet…
Lady Tsunade would set them straight, Sakura thinks angrily. She would know…
A horrible thought occurs to her.
Did Lady Tsunade know?
She’s the Fifth Hokage, and she’s a Senju. It would make sense for her to know about what happened. And what Tsunade knows, Shizune usually knows as well, at least in Sakura’s experience. If they were both privy to the information, is there any chance they might not have told Sakura?
Lady Tsunade has always shared Sakura’s mother’s opinions about Sasuke Uchiha, and she can be just as overprotective.
No. No, they would have told me, Sakura insists to herself. Based on what Sasuke said, only a handful of people ever knew the truth. Only Lord Third and Danzō Shimura and Obito Uchiha. The latter was the reason Naruto found out, along with Kakashi and Yamato. They were on the way to the Kage meeting when Obito, still masquerading as Tobi, let them in on the secret. Sakura remembers all too well that during that time, Lady Tsunade was out of commission.
Besides, she never got along with the Elders or Danzō. She’s the last person they would have told about this, even before the attack on Konoha. If she didn’t think to look into the matter, she wouldn’t know, Sakura reasons. So Shizune wouldn’t know either.
Unless, at the end of the war, there was some sort of meeting to agree on keeping Itachi’s deeds and Konoha’s involvement in the massacre from public knowledge.
In that case there’s a very small chance…
That pained feeling in her chest and throat is back, like a knife. Sakura tries hard not to feel the mounting sense of betrayal, but it’s hard. She wishes more than anything she could go to her mentor right now and ask her about it. But Tsunade is out of the village on one of her gambling binges, and Shizune spending a few days at Konoha’s orphanage trying to make sure all the inhabitants are up-to-date on their vaccines and physicals (and because she still doesn’t trust Kabuto, probably to keep an eye on him).
Both are too far away to ask.
Under normal circumstances, this would be the point where Sakura goes to talk to Naruto or Kakashi, but considering they’re both contributing factors in why she’s feeling like this, it’s not an option.
As for Sasuke…
No.
She can’t bring this up to him, not after he entrusted her with such a horrible truth. Her feelings of being kept in the dark cannot compare to what he endured, and bringing this situation up to him now feels disrespectful. As if her pain over being left out once more could ever mean anything in the face of what he lost? She’s not so arrogant as to think she matters that much in the big scheme of things.
This shouldn’t be hitting me so hard, she chides herself. After all, it is in the past, and isn’t this time of recovery all about forgiving the sins of the past and working toward a better future? She should just shrug this off as a fait accompli and move on.
But the treacherous little voice in her head keeps whispering to her.
What if they keep doing it?
In the face of that, she can’t help the overwhelming hurt. It’s as if something is broken inside her, but nothing as simple as a bodily wound that she can mend.
She usually burns that feeling off with physical activity, and she desperately wants to go out and destroy a training field or two—to feel the earth shatter and break beneath her, and watch solid rock become dust between her fingers. But that would attract attention and people wondering and she just needs…she needs to do something.
To remind herself that she isn’t useless.
That she isn’t twelve years old and  cowering while Sasuke throws his body in front of her because she is too weak and useless and inferior to defend herself. Or with snot and tears running down her face while Kakashi naively promises her that everything will be alright and Naruto vows to bring Sasuke back to them.
I am not that girl anymore, she growls to herself.
In that moment, she decides where she needs to be right now, and makes a determined beeline for the hospital. Upon arriving at her place of work, she takes a breath and, as always, lets the outside world slip away at the door. She strides into her office, where her intern Ando glances up in surprise, and before he can ask why she’s back so soon, she interrupts him.
“What’s the next operation scheduled?”
“Uh…Isamu is doing a double foot transplant in fifteen minute—”
“I’m scrubbing in on that,” she tells him. “He can have the next one.”
“But—”
She strides out before he can complete his protest, heading for an operating room.
Sakura very rarely wields her influence to jump the queue on cases, but she needs to stay busy, and she thinks that today of all days she deserves to use her advantage a bit.
Over the course of several hours, she schedules procedure after procedure, taking the lead on the most complex and challenging cases—the ones that require her constant presence and attention. In the midst of her work, she is able to forget the uncertainty and hurt and the memory of the useless child she was. Here, she is once again head medical ninja of Konoha, a hero of the Fourth Shinobi War and a legendary Sannin in her own right. She battles with death every day and, more often than not, wins. People here look up to her, defer to her knowledge and listen to her recommendations.
Naruto, of course, finds her soon enough, being as meddling as ever. While Sakura walks across the courtyard to consult on a possible case of Chakra Virus, he appears in front of her, determined and repentant.
“Sakura, I’m sorry, I swear, we didn’t—”
“I’m working, Naruto,” she tells him flatly and keeps walking. “Please leave.”
“But you need to listen—!”
“I need you to respect my wishes,” she replies. “Since it’s clear you don’t respect anything else.”
“That’s total bullshit and you know it!” Naruto yells, frustration and worry in his voice. For once, though, her immediate reaction isn’t to try to calm him. “Just because of this one thing—”
Sakura turns around then, her hand snapping out and grabbing Naruto by the collar of his jacket.
“This is my place of work,” she hisses at him, a flare of anger bleeding through the carefully constructed façade of business she’s lost herself in for a few hours. “I am saving lives right now, and I don’t have time for your interruptions while people could be dying. Now leave on your own, or I will break every one of your bones so thoroughly that even with your healing abilities, you’ll still be stuck on bed-rest for a month.”
She experiences a minor spark of gratification at the way Naruto goes pale beneath his whiskers and vanishes in an instant, but it doesn’t make her feel any better. Like his apologies, his misery feels hollow to her and does nothing to satisfy the hurt.
When she returns to her wing of the hospital, she gives Ando and all the other staff warnings that she is not to be disturbed by friends or family while she works. It’s not the first time she’s ordered this, so they don’t argue. She has a trusted support network among her colleagues, all of whom know better than to question her at this point. Those that do and still attempt to speak to her are run off with a single forbidding look.
While cleaning up after a successful limb-reattachment, a new intern that she doesn’t know very well approaches her.
“Sakura-sensei, the Hokage requires your presence,” she tells her shyly.
Sakura says nothing and reaches for the nearest chart and begins to glance over the particulars for her next case.
“Should I tell him you’re on your way?”
“No.”
“Oh…um…so you’ll be a little late?”
“No.”
“Oh.” She pauses. “What...what should I tell him?”
“Nothing.”
The girl isn’t quite sure what to say about that, but Sakura glances up and says, “That will be all, Wakana. You have rounds.”
She barely registers the intern’s puzzled expression as she heads off to her next appointment.
For another seventy-two hours straight Sakura pushes herself from one procedure to another, elbows deep in blood and viscera one moment, or painstaking research and experiments in the skills lab. She survives on caffeine and soldier pills, focussed on the problems she can solve. She doesn’t have to think about her injured heart while healing a broken pelvis.
Of course, she knows she can’t go on like this.
Eventually she starts to feel the exhaustion of using so much brain power and chakra without a respite. Even though she has a large reserve and could conceivably go on for days, it’s irresponsible to do so outside of a combat situation. Besides, being at work is no longer distracting her the way it should. Her thoughts and worries are beginning to bleed back through, and she knows she’ll have to face them sooner or later. Kakashi will only accept her ignoring his summons so many times, and Naruto won’t be deterred by her threat much longer.
Truthfully speaking, she’s surprised she hasn’t seen him at all since their encounter days ago. She suspects Kakashi might be keeping him from bothering her, because he at least understands the need for space.
Ando eventually makes the vague, round-about suggestion that she head home to sleep and relax—he curbs his usual bluntness by not telling her she smells, though she suspects she really should shower soon—and Sakura finds herself giving in.
She’s too tired to argue, apparently.
As she leaves the hospital, she pauses, dim and sluggish and too tired to think too much. It’s why she’s pretty sure that she’s dreaming when she notices a familiar figure waiting across the street.
Sasuke leans against the building opposite the hospital, a living shadow in an otherwise bright and cheerful street. And she instantly knows he’s waiting for her, even though he has never done so before.
It should bother her that he’s watching her, looking as unruffled and untouchable as always. And she’s probably got circles under her eyes, and the remnants of makeup caked on in places or and she doesn’t remember if she brushed her hair or teeth this morning. But somehow, it doesn’t really matter to her right now, the way it once would have.
And it’s still the most natural thing in the world for her to change her course and head toward him. His presence doesn’t erase her exhaustion or her inner turmoil, but it does cause a fluttering sensation or anticipation in her stomach.
After stewing in her self-constructed isolation for a few days, she’ll take it.
As always, reviews and constructive criticism are much appreciated! Also, if you are in a supportive mood , you can find my tip jar here.
Naruto Spectacular
Seating/Glasses
Second back row, almost right at the wall. Awful seating, but I could still see things clearly. Some people had binoculars ;; This year I decided not to go with the translator glasses – I’m sure they have a proper name, but they’re these cool glasses you wear when watching the performance and as the characters speak, subtitles come up. I believe they’re available in English and Chinese. Something like Naruto is easy for me to understand without subtitles, and last year I felt like only the main points were being subbed, instead of everything (maybe a fear people couldn’t read fast enough?) so I’d probably only recommend them if your Japanese is lacking. I’m not sure if they’d work properly sitting so far away either – maybe they’d overlap on the actors too much? I think they’re better if you use them up close tbh.
The Show I apologise for skipping between musical, spectacular, play, spectacle and show ;;; We start off with Konohamaru fighting bad guys. Personally I don’t care for him, and it was really an excuse to put an actor in the audience and for Naruto to look cool when he saved Konohamaru. Unnecessary scene, and from my spot, hard to see.
Essentially everything up to the ‘find Sasuke’ arc is ignored. So if you’re hoping for Sakura screen time, you’d best go back to the source material. In saying that, Sakura’s fight with Sasori is mentioned a few times, and she explains Sasori’s mannerisms to Yamato when they do the whole ‘Kabuto is Sasori’s spy’ scene. I can understand why they skipped it, as while it was hella cool to watch her kick ass, it’d be difficult to do in a stage play and you’d need to get the Suna Three back for such small scenes etc etc. Maybe if they do this play again next year, they can add that in. Tsunade gets a song as she kinda explains the mission, but honestly, you could give her lines to literally any other character. She’s not that influential. I think she looks like Tsunade, but her speaking voice feels too harsh to me.
Sai is golden. He looks fine, he looks like Sai, sounds like Sai. Like, y’all, I realise that’s what acting is, but not everyone can do it well. After the show, and in the break, numerous people went and bought Sai goods. (Also Itachi goods) He was a perfect Sai. When they’re finding Sasuke in Orochimaru’s lair, Naruto and Sai have a song and it’s pretty touching… until Sai tries to sing about Naruto’s dick. Naruto has the most perfect ‘dude, for real?’ look and I can’t wait to see it on dvd.
Speaking of new team 7 – Yamato’s scary face is done so so well! They end up putting it on a large screen behind him. It looks mostly like someone with a torch on their face, so it’s a little cheesy, but it works really well in the scenes it’s done in (two or three times?). Sakura also did her ‘meeting Sai’ scene, when she hits both Naruto and Sai, incredibly well. Not only is she insanely cute, she’s the perfect Sakura. Enough cool and enough cute. If they continue to do musicals until the completion of the show, I’m a little worried how Sasuke-obsessed they’ll make her, but so far it’s been toned down, which I appreciate.
Unfortunately Sai doesn’t try to capture Sasuke in his sleep. I can understand why (unnecessary stage props and all), but Sasuke being such a moody bitch when he wakes up that he blows up the base will forever be one of my favourite things. The whole meeting Naruto and co scene is kind of a let down too. It was nice, but considering how that’s how Shippuden opened and the build up to get there, the play didn’t have the same feel. This play was rushed a little, and this scene suffered for it.
Sasuke killing Orochimaru was great tho. Orochimaru’s voice will always be amazing, speaking or singing, so I’ll probably never say an Orochimaru scene is bad lol It was sufficiently creepy (though again, a little too fast) and gave Sasuke and Orochimaru equal voices.
Another scene that suffered was collecting Taka. This one I mostly grumble at due to my Taka-bias tho. Obviously they can’t spend episodes gathering the three of them, and to be fair, they did get a song. Karin was a little overly sexual, but considering they only showed her being ott twice? I won’t complain (especially in that outfit – she can honestly do what she wants and I’ll agree ;;;) Sometimes it was actually kind of cute. Another scene cut was finding Zabuza’s sword. Considering the time it took in the anime, and all the scene changes, it makes sense, but I enjoyed seeing Sasuke actually test his team – here, we have him just believing they’ll be suitable instead of confirming it. Juugo’s whole ‘male female’ scene was good too, and Karin egging Juugo on in his fight against Suigetsu was a good touch too.
In between scenes we often have Akatsuki stuff – Itachi generally barges in on Sasuke’s songs to tell him he’s weak af, and wherever Itachi goes, Kisame goes too. Naruto and Taka sometimes join as well, same for Deidara.
I really liked Deidara. Unfortunately his character was greatly reduced, but considering he isn’t insanely plot relevant, I guess it doesn’t make much of a difference… (Un?)fortunately, when he creates the giant Deidara, it’s a blow up. I was trying really hard not to cackle. It’s ridiculous. I lowkey hate it, lowkey love it’s cheesiness. Also, from where I was sitting, the tongue that is in his chest looks a little like something else. It just kinda… sprung free and I couldn’t take it seriously at all =.= I guess this scene was gold for all the wrong reasons lol
The search team is sent out for Sasuke and them running looks so stupid. I understand how hard it is to run around, since the space is so limited, but maybe instead of such a long running scene, have some of it just be talking? Maybe it looked good from the centre of the audience, but from my spot, it looked really lame. Kurenai’s team makes an appearance, but get a line or two each. Karin still gets Juugo to help her scatter Sasuke’s stuff, but I don’t believe it’s explicitly said what her plan is, so unless you’ve seen the show/read the manga (safe to say most audience members would – but sometimes people come to these things just because (shout out to the 80 year old couple at the Digimon play), or are accompanying a friend), you wouldn’t know what her plan was.
Next is the Itachi vs Sasuke scene and it was so good. Like, idk how to explain it. They had doubles for clones, it was spot on with lines and emotions. The audience got really involved in it, and it sucks that you know what’s coming because it hurts that much more… I’d say this is probably the highlight of the play. Obviously they’re two popular characters and their actions, since even before their introductions, have been the driving force of some plot incidents (Itachi killing the clan motivates Sasuke to be strong, goes to Orochimaru) and other character’s motivation (Sasuke’s abscence motivates Team 7), not to mention how emotional this scene is, so I think a lot of time and effort was placed into this scene. It worked really well and I wish I could explain it better ;;;
Taka becomes Hebi, and Tobi is done really well. Tobi interacts with Pein and Konan as well, but mostly with the Uchiha brothers. I’m biased toward Tobi as he ran up to us in the finale and I could high five him, but shush. Those gloves are real nice but in this heat I can’t imagine they’d be super comfortable… The ending song is the same (and I really hope we get a cast version soon – honestly last year’s Gaara/Oro duet part was ICONIC). Naruto also had some hella cool rad sticks and when he spun them, it made a Naruto face and stuff. Rad af.
In the comments, Sasuke just kept cackling, while Yamato and Sai were minor low key throwing shade at Deidara and Tobi who were actually speaking. They were dorks so there was plenty of time to laugh at them lol This team works together so well and you can see they’re good friends – sometimes you don’t feel that but in a series that is based on, partly at least, the power of friendship and love, that’s super important.
Honestly, while this year lacked the jumping around action of last year’s, I think it kinda showed how they characters matured? As soon as it ended I wanted to see it again! While I wanted to see last years again too, I was more serious about seeing this years again, but this late in the season makes it way too difficult  Guess I just have to wait for next year!
How does it compare to last year? I saw last year’s performance as well. Personally, I liked this year’s better. I am hugely Taka-biased tho. Even though my seats weren’t as good this year (were as bad as you could get tbh – last year I was in the second block, if I had been one row closer I could have high touched the actors), I feel more touched by this year’s performance – partly because it was more emotional to a lot of characters I guess? More interesting scenes too – the Lee/Naruto wake up scene last year was cute (and everything with InoShikaCho was amazing, and this musical didn’t have anything on that type of team bond/audience interaction feel, which was kinda sad), but this year had things like Orochimaru dying, so I guess it had less time for ‘filler’. Also, while I don’t hate Naruto, he’s not even in the top five of my fave Naruto characters ;; If anything, I felt like he was unnecessarily added in some scenes in this performance.
Also, while I didn’t talk to the fans (lots of people come by themselves, don’t want to talk to others and that’s ok! And I’m sure some of them are confused by the foreigner and worry about their English/my level of Japanese so don’t strike up a conversation and I’m too shy to do start one), when I was trying to organise the stupid amount of merch I bought, one girl offered to hold my coffee and someone else helped me when I dropped something. Also, the girls really brought their a-game this year and were splendidly dressed. I… wore a Naruto shirt and was underdressed in comparison ;;;
I felt like the girls around me were more emotional as well. Maybe some of the crowd last year had already seen the previous year’s performance and therefore knew what was coming, but more people were crying this year. This year felt a lot more fast paced, so everything happened faster and there were more intense moments, and I guess it was more than likely mostly Uchiha fans in the audience, which probably had something to do with it, but still, I think this audience was more involved than last year’s was.
There were some people waiting for the actors to leave (so they could wave them off in their taxis) but security practically pushed me out. Considering they weren’t doing the same to anyone else, I do feel it was race motivated – maybe they thought I wouldn’t fight back due to lacking Japanese, or something? Either way it was hella rude as I was getting my phone, train pass etc out of my bag and everyone was pretty far from where the taxis were going to be driving anyway. If someone spends 7000 yen on a ticket and then more than that on goods and preorders the bluray, while I don’t necessarily want respect, I think the least I deserve, the least type of customer service I should receive, is not being shoved.
I’d recommend the stage performances regardless. Seeing them live is so much more fun than watching them on a dvd! Obviously it isn’t realistic for everyone to do that, but try to at least support the official release in some way.
Could you do a part 3 of reader begging for konans life? Wher the reader gains feelings for tobi, or tobi starts to like the reader? Thank you so much for reading this!
I kind of made this complicated, but I hope you like it none the less. Thank you for requesting a continuation. :) Also spoilers for those who haven't gotten to the war yet in Naruto Shippuden.
 Part I
Part II
Reader begging for Konan’s life: Part III
It had been a few weeks since you offered your life to spare Konan’s. You were under lock and key for the first week as Tobi had somewhere to be. He couldn’t trust you in his Kamui dimension and he hadn’t made up his mind whether to kill you yet or not. He had tested your skill and strength in a sparring match, concluding that you weren’t as strong as your former comrades. Tobi realized why Konan and Nagato left you behind in Amegakure.
You weren’t an adequate fighter but you were excellent at medical ninjutsu and chakra control. Tobi figured he may have use for you and left you for a week with a clone of white Zetsu to attend to you.
When Tobi returned, he was not alone. He freed you from your cell and brought you to another young man, whose being you could feel was full of malice and hate. Something about the young man unnerved you as the man demanded for his new pair of eyes.
Disturbed, Tobi commanded you that you were to help transplant the young man’s eyes for his brothers. You were bothered when Tobi showed you the container with a pair of floating eyeballs. Tobi had to threaten you once more with Konan’s life to get you to work.
After you had performed the transplant, you were instructed to tend to the man. You soon learned the young man’s name was Sasuke, another Uchiha that you saw was on the path of darkness. He was impatient and rude during his healing process. He didn’t make it easy for you to attend to him.
You hadn’t seen Tobi around much and he left you to your own devices, knowing you were still being watched by Zetsu. Tobi would stop in on occasion to check on the young Uchiha’s process and recovery.
“How much longer?” Sasuke seethed lowly as you placed a tray of food before him.
You knew better than to help him eat even though he was blind at the moment, because Sasuke had snapped at you the first time you tried.
“It shouldn’t be much longer. Your eyes have to heal and adjust,” you mentioned softly, not wanting to anger him.
Sasuke clenched his fist. “I want a definite answer.  I can’t stand being stuck in here for much longer,” Sasuke urged, impatience laced in his voice.
“There’s no definite answer, your body needs rest- “
“I’VE rested enough,” Sasuke snapped, cutting you off, making you flinch.
“Now, now Sasuke… These things take time,” Tobi’s deep voice cooed.
You whipped your head around to see Tobi standing in the doorway. Sasuke frowned deeply as his head turned in the direction of the voice.
“Y/N, come with me and leave young Sasuke to his supper,” Tobi ordered as you hurriedly picked yourself up off the floor to head towards Tobi.
You followed Tobi out of Sasuke’s room and down the corridor.
“How is he doing?” Tobi questioned.
“It won’t take long now. Maybe another week,” you answered, obediently.
“Hm, great,” Tobi’s voice rumbled, his thoughts drifting somewhere else.
They walked in silence for a while through the Akatsuki hideout. Tobi’s thoughts wandered to the upcoming war he had declared on the Five Great Nations. His Zetsu army was almost complete. He had a good month to prepare and with Sasuke close to recovery it was good news to him.
He looked down at you through the eye hole of his mask, glad that he had decided to use you to his advantage. Sasuke’s recovery was coming along faster than he expected and with having you attend to Sasuke, it gave him more time to plan for the war. He knew you still believed he was Madara to some extent, which is why you were more incline to obey his commands.
You were of good use but he wondered what he should do with you after Sasuke was better and when the war begins. He could keep you as medical backup if his plans go arise but he wasn’t too sure of your loyalty if you found out he had gone back on his bargain.
It wasn’t his fault really. He had warned you, Konan would be spared if she didn’t get in the way, but he knew it wouldn’t matter. Konan meant everything to you and the moment you found out she died by his hand, it would be the moment you quit being so obedient.
Tobi was wallowing in his thoughts that he was surprised as Zetsu appeared before him.
“What is it?” Tobi asked, Zetsu having stopped you two in your tracks.
“Kabuto is outside of the hideout,” Black Zetsu informed.
“What?!” Tobi remarked, astonished as the information sunk in as Zetsu sunk into the ground once more. He turned quickly to you. “Follow me and stay out of sight and don’t say a word.”
You nodded, following Tobi to the exit of the Akatsuki hideout where Kabuto stood out in the open waiting patiently. You were quick to take cover as Tobi stepped out into the sunlight. You moved swiftly behind a bolder that was beside the opening to the hideout, peeking round it to watch the exchange.
You were sure Kabuto being here was bad news. You knew of the man, knowing he was one of Orochimaru’s henchmen, but with Orochimaru dead, you were curious what he was up to.
You knew Tobi requesting for you to follow him meant even he didn’t trust Kabuto. You figured Tobi wanted you close by in case the exchange came to a brawl and he needed medical assistance.
If that were to happen, it would be the perfect opportunity for you to bail. However, you wouldn’t be able to go through with it. If Tobi managed to survive without your assistance, Konan’s life would be endanger once more. You couldn’t live with that.
Plus… over the passed few weeks, you had the chance to interact with Tobi. You learned there was more to him than meets the eye. He was very somber and was quiet half the time, but there were moments when he make an unexpected joke and laugh at his own humor. His humor actually caught you off guard too and it made you laugh without meaning to. In those moments you knew there was a man that was softer and livelier under his sullen demeanor.
You had mixed emotions about Tobi, knowing he was your commander in order for Konan to remain safe but he essentially held your freedom in his hand.
“Let’s start with the greetings, Tobi.”
Your ears picked up as you focused your attention on the conversation at hand.
“Oh, that’s right, I hear you’re going by Madara these days,” Kabuto began smug upon seeing Tobi.
“I was impressed you found me,” Tobi was quick to respond, his voice deep, not amused.
“You shouldn’t underestimate my volume of intel from crisscrossing the land as a spy for an Akatsuki member,” Kabuto enlightened.
“That’s right you were one of Sasori’s spies, you’re a trader to the Akatsuki,” Tobi accused as he leaped towards Kabuto to attack.
Your heart rate quickened at the sight. You figured it would come to a fight, but you thought it wouldn’t be so soon as you continued to watch.
Kabuto was quick to retreat, before slamming his hands together to summon a row of coffins. You weren’t clueless about the jutsu Kabuto had summoned, seeing Tobi paused as well, recognizing the jutsu. Kabuto smirked as the coffins fell open, displaying five deceased members of the Akatsuki.
You weren’t appalled upon seeing the dead corpses of Deidara, Sasori, Itachi, Nagato, and Kakuzu. However, you became distressed seeing Nagato’s reanimated body, knowing that Kabuto must have found where Konan had hid the bodies of your dead comrades. Your stomach twisted in fear that Kabuto might have harmed Konan to get that information.
“Now that I’ve gotten your attention. I did not come here to fight you,” Kabuto addressed, casually.
“Then what do you want?” Tobi questioned, not trusting this snake.
“I want us to join forces,” Kabuto offered. “I’m willing to lend you my services for your upcoming war.”
“And what are you after in return?” Tobi’s eyes narrowed, skeptical.
“Sasuke Uchiha.”
You gasped lightly from your hiding place, before quickly covering your mouth. Kabuto was after the young man you were healing and you couldn’t help but wonder why. Kabuto’s eyes barely shifted to the spot you were hiding, before returning to Tobi. Tobi wasn’t fazed and didn’t take his eye off Kabuto.
“What are you plotting?” Tobi accused, menacingly.
“Nothing in particular,” Kabuto mentioned innocently, a sly smile on his face. “I’m just interested in finding the pure truth behind ninjutsu. Sasuke is necessary for my research.”
“What if I refuse?” Tobi mocked.
Kabuto smirked widened as he smacked his hands together again. He summoned another coffin and you were astounded once Kabuto revealed the reanimated shinobi he summoned. Your eyes widened as your heart froze momentarily upon seeing Madara Uchiha’s reanimated body.
Your eyes immediately fell on Tobi. Your mind was racing, wondering who the man in the orange mask really was. You had always been skeptical that Tobi was Madara but now it was confirmed. Confusion and curiosity swept through you, wondering who this man, Tobi, really was as you kept your eyes on him.
Tobi seemed stunned too by Kabuto’s reveal. Kabuto was smug, knowing Tobi could not refuse his request now and Sasuke would be relinquished to him.
Tobi shook with inner rage as he tried to keep his voice calm. “Where did you get that?”
“Oh, I have my means but don’t worry I haven’t told anyone else about this,” Kabuto stated as his eyes drifted over to where you were hiding. “Besides you and your mouse.”
Silence fell over the scene, you weren’t sure what was going to happen next and you were surprised as Tobi began to laugh deeply. Your eyes widened, wondering why Tobi found this amusing.  Kabuto didn’t take the laughter kindly as it wasn’t what he expected either.
“Kabuto Yakushi. I never expected for you to become such a formidable vessel. To fight you would only lower my battle strength even if I do have a skillful medical ninja at my disposal.” Tobi commented, mentioning you as a great asset to him. “You came here at the perfect opportunity; war will be upon us soon and I will only fulfill your request after both you and Sasuke fulfill your parts in the war. Until then you can’t even see him.”
Kabuto’s grin dropped from his face. “You comprehend quickly as expected from an Uchiha who calls themselves Madara.”
“I will need to reformulate my battle strategy after assessing your battle strength, come along,” Tobi directed as he turned back to the entrance of the hideout.
“And what of your mouse you have hiding?” Kabuto questioned as he dispelled his summoning jutsu.
“She shall be of no concern of yours,” Tobi claimed, nodding to you from your hiding spot.
You had many questions at the tip of your tongue but you knew better than to ask Tobi in front of Kabuto. Tobi gestured for you to enter first and you nodded obediently as he ordered you to head back to your chores.
Your eyes connected with his, seeing his sharingan still activated, before leaving him and Kabuto alone to make plans for the war.
[ Stay ] [ @abyssaldespair ] [ Uchiha Obito, Suigin Ryū] [ Alcohol mention ] [ Verse: White Hands of Healing ]
“Are...are you sure this is a good idea?”
Obito doesn’t answer, keeping pace to the roadside inn...which apparently doubles as a tavern. Following a bit nervously, Ryū goes on.
“Tobi, I don’t drink -”
“Then you can just keep me company, hm?”
There’s a slight pout to her lips, but she doesn’t argue as they make their way inside. Neither sparse nor full, the main room’s lively as they weave through to the bar along the back wall.
“Sake,” he orders without hesitation, taking a seat as Ryū gingerly does the same, shying from the person on her other side. Tucking her feet atop the crossbar of the stool, she gives Obito a glance as he receives his first bottle, pouring a cup and lifting his mask just enough to knock it back.
As a sensor, she can feel a slight...agitation to his aura, but she doesn’t question him. For now, a few drinks isn’t enough to worry over. Hopefully it won’t go any further than that. And she supposes even if it does, well...she can always detox him herself if she has to. Gods know she’s done it enough times by now to know how…
Still, she can’t help a slight worry, watching from the corner of her eyes as he seems to brood. “...ne...would you rather, um...go sit somewhere and talk for a while?”
“...no. Not today.”
Ryū deflates. “...o-okay.” After a brief pause, her spine snaps straight as something cold spills against her back “AH!”
Already sloshed, the man on her other side slurs out apologies over his spilled drink, offering to help her clean it up.
“No! No, that’s...fine. I can handle it.” A bit loath to remove her coat, Ryū gives Obito another glance. “I’ll...be right back.” Hopefully she can wash it out in the bathroom…
He only grunts in reply, watching her retreat before taking the opportunity to knock back several more shots...and order another bottle.
He shouldn’t have let her come with him. Hell, there’s a lot of things he shouldn’t be doing concerning her, and yet...here they are. He’s lost count of how many times they’ve met in shadowed places for brief flings of passion...only for each to have her pull away with a bit more of his heart. A heart he thought was dead and gone long before he met her.
...it’s causing problems.
He gets his bottle, and takes another shot, mood souring further by the moment the more he thinks on the subject. Doesn’t help that there’s a slight fog to his senses now, a bit of vertigo starting to loosen his seat on the stool. Part of him thinks to take off his traveling cloak, but...maybe not a good idea, no matter how warm it is. Fumbling the last shot in the bottle, he orders another, ignoring the perk of a brow the barman gives him.
He’s worked so hard, for so long...pulled so many strings, laid intricate traps. Connected people to serve his greater purpose. He - he alone! - has masterminded everything he needs to put this plan into motion. To bring about true peace...the one thing he’s desired since Rin’s death.
...and now there’s her.
There’s a scowl, resting his brow in his palm for a moment. Nothing like this was ever meant to happen. He never intended to let anyone close! He’d thought his facade without cracks, without weakness...and then just one woman stumbles into his life, and everything he’s dedicated his life to for so long is thrown into doubt.
...maybe the world isn’t as dark as he’d thought. Maybe it’s possible for people like her - good people - to live as beacons of light in the shadows.
...maybe he’ll cling too tightly until his darkness snuffs her out.
She makes him happy - something he never thought he’d be again. Something he thought he couldn’t be. Are the rest of his convictions so easily proven wrong?
...what if he is wrong…?
No...no, he can’t doubt. He can’t! Too much depends upon him reaching the end of this road. No matter how long it takes, how many bodies, how many villages...he’ll bring them all together into a perfect world of dreams. No more war, hate, death, destruction...none of it will matter so long as he makes his goal.
It’s what makes her so dangerous. She weaves an illusion better than any genjutsu. Tricking him into believing he could have a peaceful life. Every time she talks about home in the mountains, painting such a pretty picture, traitorous images fill his mind. Sunlit mornings sprawled in a bed by her side, able to touch her, kiss her, make love to her any time he desires. A house to call a home, land to wander and simply bask in its simplicity. No villages, no shinobi, no war...just a place tucked away, where no one could find them. Where they could do whatever they want, however, whenever...no expectations, no rules. No one to answer to...maybe even a place he wouldn’t fear having a family of his own, far from the poison of his own childhood. A taste of heaven among the taint of Hell he’s lived in for so long.
...not only is it selfish, but it surely can’t be possible. He’s delusional and the pain it brings him is unbearable.
The third bottle’s gone, and the barkeep is clearly ignoring his gesture for another.
It’s then she comes back.
Looking self-conscious with her damp coat in her arms, she quickly notices the three empty bottles, snapping to attention. “What -?”
Only further morose at her reappearance, Obito rises from his seat, immediately lurching to one side as she struggles to catch him. “Go ‘way…”
“Tobi…?” Ryū hesitates as he tries to shove her aside, only to end up staggering to the wall. Worry darkens her greys, deciding to ignore the water and slip her coat back on before offering money to the bartender. She’ll need both hands for this. “...easy there.”
He has to get away from her. Trying to navigate to the door, he nearly crashes into a few tables, earning stares as he attempts to make it back out into the night air. It’s so warm...and he’s so damnedly dizzy!
Ryū follows in his shadow, arms half-raised and ready to catch him. Eventually they make it back through the door, and Obito comes to a stop in the middle of the barren road, a hand fumbling with his mask.
“...maybe...maybe you should sit down, ne? We can go back in and just...get a room. Where you can find your feet again.”
Either he’s ignoring her, or he really didn’t hear her, staring skyward with his back to her.
Easing around to try and see his front, she hesitates at his expression, streaked with a few errant tears. “Tobi?!”
“You...you have to go…”
“...I’m not leaving you like this -”
“Go!” An arm half-heartedly reaches as though to push her despite being nowhere near enough. “You’re...you’re ruining everything…”
Rather than angry, Ryū just looks all the more worried. “...what do you mean…? Taking a few more steps, she jolts as he suddenly changes mood, turning and latching onto her with enough force to knock her over. But he doesn’t seem to notice, hiding his face in the crook of her neck.
“...I can’t...focus with you here. I’m so...confused.”
Pinned beneath him, Ryū ignores the pinch of a rock in her back. A hand lifts to pet along his hair. “...I don’t mean to confuse you, Tobi…”
“I was so sure...of...of everything! But you’re throwing it all into doubt…” He just clings to her tighter. “...I want things from you I can’t have...I can’t…”
“...why not?”
A sigh. “...it’s...I can’t say. I can’t…”
Only all the more unsure herself, Ryū tries to piece together his ramblings. “...you mean...it’s hard to...to choose between spending time with me, and...attending to your work…?”
“Yes…” The answer’s tone is weak. “...at times I want to throw everything away, take you away, disappear...but I can’t...I can’t!”
Despair clutches in her chest. “...you can’t…or...?”
“...I shouldn’t…I…” Another sigh. “...oh, Ryū...why can’t it be so simple…?” A moment of silence, and then, “...I feel so lost…”
It’s Ryū’s turn to cling to him, bordering on her own tears. “...I’m sorry, Tobi. I wish there was something I could do…”
“...you won’t leave…?”
A pause. “...no. Not unless you really, truly want me to. And…” She gives a soft huff of humorless laughter. “...I don’t know if your judgment is really all that clear right now, ne…?”
“Are you sure?”
“...yes, I’m sure.” Hesitating a moment, she decides now might be a good time. “...I already told you, ne…? I love you, as...silly as that may be.”
For a long moment, Obito is silent. “...I think...I love you, too. But I don’t...know what that means.”
A soft smile pulls at her lips. “...well, we can talk about that later. It’s a rather big subject after all, ne? And I need to make sure you’re not going to have a nasty hangover in a few hours.” She tries to sit up, laughing as Obito grunts in refusal. “We can’t stay in the road!”
A pause, and then a sharp breath as he manages to take them both into his pocket dimension. A little shaken at the change, Ryū eventually gives an exasperated laugh. “...you’re ridiculous…”
“We’re not in the road.”
“No...no, we’re not.”
Obito adjusts himself slightly, lying more to her side with an arm across to her shoulder, and a cheek atop her chest. “...stay?”
“...do I have much choice in here?” she teases softly. But after a pause, she restarts her attentions through his hair, returning his hold. “...but yes...I’ll stay. For as long as you’ll have me…”
