I've brought this up before but in s1 and s2 whenever the door is open during regular work hours there's a distinct hubbub of an active office with far more than just three staff members outside. this was almost certainly a mistake resulting from a breakdown in communication about just how isolated the archives are from the rest of the institute and I have never once seen it acknowledged in any meta discussions or fan works, but it is technically canon that for a while the basement was a bustling work environment filled with people, and then at some point as the situation got more and more dire they all just. weren't there anymore. whoosh gone.

Why don't we talk about MAG 35 more? Which book did Gerard get in the meat hallway? Was it the Boon Turner's Tale? Why was he carrying bird bones? How did the 13 doors hold a fear each, how are they there? Why was this building not brought up again? What killed that guy? How was Smirke doing that? If Smirke was so good at dealing with all the fears, we he an archivist? Is so, how did he not start the end?

Ahh, the era when his most notable feature was his terribly maintained hair and not his dozens of unsettling eye tattoos or horrific burn scars. At least he did a decent job on the dye this time. And Gerry my beloved, I get the temptation to avoid washing your hair to keep the dye from fading for as long as possible, but it's probably worth it to just invest in some better quality shampoo.
I'm pretty sure the band shirt he's wearing is supposed to be Mastodon, but Megalodon and Megadeath and also good guesses. Everyone who thinks it's the Mechanisms is a genius with a galaxy brain.
My man be hiding in the shadows for indeterminate amounts of time, waiting for his opportunity to be cryptic.

Extremely funny that Leitner is established to have an accent in canon and then later it gets retconned that he was just faking it (I guess because Mr Sims Sr couldn't do a decent Norwegian accent?) Also great that his office is completely empty because Leitner doesn't actually do anything other than be a waste of space.
First canon appearance of the man himself and he immediately goes about establishing that he's a massive cunt. [Insert entire Leitner rant here.]

I was listening to Mag 35, Old Passages, and it’s so funny listening back.
Like as far as the story goes it so obviously exists to show that there are 14 categories, 14 fears that we’re gonna be focusing on in podcast, and giving a few noticeable examples of what’s happening in the various tunnels is a great story move to show us what Fear Categories we have.
But in context of the narrative, what the fuck Mr Smirke?
I know, right, I know that this man was obsessed with balance of the supernatural but what the genuine fuck did this man have to do to attract and isolate each flavor of fear into each tunnel and KEEP THEM SEPARATE AND ISOLATED TO THAT TUNNEL? Like we know canonically that Smirke’s 14 is just a classification, it’s just one way to organize these broad categories of fear gods to better fit human understanding. So we’re to understand that this man somehow attracted each type of fear that he saw in the world into these concrete tubes and just had them chill there?
It brings to mind the idea of an oyster making a pearl around a grain of sand. Like Robert Smirke put some kind of bait into each tunnel for a fear to take over. Carefully going into each tunnel, sprinkling some dirt for the buried, a few insects for the corruption, an account of a fear for the eye, a little doll for the stranger, so the Fear would take notice and make its home there.
And the most interesting thing here is that Robert Smirke just. Had Spooky Club meetings in there. He somehow trapped embodiments of fourteen fear gods in fourteen tunnels and kept them there and he did this so that he could show it off to his bros? What the hell was the Carlton Club? Do I want to know what Robert and the spooky boys were doing in the fear tunnels every Saturday night?
