im listening to mag again and damn do the archival crew HATE jon. listen i get it supposedly your lives would be normal if he hadn't brought you here... but he didn't? (minus og archive crew, jon requesting them and all) if anything he was just kinda there when you made decisions, bro wasn't EVEN THERE when melanie got hired like??? like how r u gonna wish him pain rn, he's ltrly sopping wet and on the verge of dying💀

like another anon I got a month or so ago, this is one of my sleeper agent trigger phrases, so this might be another marina monologue moment.

as I'm also in the middle of a (for my standards) incredibly slow relisten, I've been thinking about this topic, too, but I've been coming at it from a slightly different angle than I normally do. in tim's case, we don't get an actual look at the circumstances under which he transferred to the archives, it is theoretically possible that jon laid it on a bit thick in asking him to come with him to the department and tim wouldn't have even thought of it otherwise, but with melanie we have several scenes of her hiring and onboarding where jon is not present and she continually rebuffs people who tell her she's making a mistake, so the text very clearly sets up that her blaming jon for being trapped there doesn't make sense. and, even with tim having been requested by jon, he still had to make the ultimate decision to switch departments himself, so, yknow, what gives?

most people, I think, and myself in the past, have come at this question from a very jon-centric pov because he's the main character and it's a jon-centric show, but I think putting it down to "they lash out at him because he happens to be there and stops defending himself after a while" misses something, as does "they lash out at him because elias sets everyone up to think they have an adversarial relationship to jon." more than that, I think it's about the rejection of agency.

tma is a show that's very much About agency and choices, so it's important to keep track of where characters suddenly balk and try to offload their choices onto other agents. martin, despite being very proactive and efficient when he sets his mind to it, has a consistent habit of thinking of himself as fundamentally unimportant and unable to affect real change. jon, someone who is usually culpability_acceptor_4000, really tries to convince himself that the web made him pull statements out of strangers. and melanie and tim, on realizing that they've gotten themselves stuck in the archives, have similar reactions of trying to retroactively make those decisions jon's.

they hate being stuck there and they can't bear the idea that it might be their fault, and they don't know how to reconcile the choices they did make with the greater forces outside of their control that shape their lives. tim swings right from seeing jon as fully responsible to seeing everything as the result of cosmically inevitable bad luck, and this hits him so hard that it leads directly to his suicide. post-bullet melanie gets a better handle on it; accepting that she chose to fall further into the slaughter opens her up to accepting that she made other choices, like joining the archives, as well as accepting future choices, like quitting the archives.

and yes, in the moments where tim and melanie are most vulnerable and just starting to realize how deeply screwed they are, jon (at least from their pov) does something to make it worse. when jon tells tim that jane presntiss wasn't his fault, tim says "well you sure made me feel worse afterwards! and then everyone had to pay attention to how you were feeling to get you to stop stalking us!" when melanie goes in for a second assassination attempt on elias, elias makes jon talk her down instead of doing it himself, presumably to try and get the slaughter mark done with. neither of these are the inciting incidents for tim and melanie's situations, but they stand out. and because jon is culpability_acceptor_4000, a man who feels like the weight of the whole world is on his shoulders and is even right some of the time, the accusations stick. tim and melanie don't want anything to be their fault, jon thinks everything is his fault, and it's a bit of a vicious self-fulfilling cycle.

I know were all busy freaking out ab seeing things happen so early on in tmagp but this is a friendly reminder that:

A) seasons r still like 40 eps each so we’ve got a WHILE to go and

B) things WILL happen faster than in TMA bc tmagp is only like 2 szns and

C) if u relisten to TMA as I consistently do bc I can’t find podcasts that make my brain go brrr in the same way you will recall that a lot of shit happens early on there too. We see the coffin and breekon and hope for the first time in EPISODE TWO. Leightners, Mike Crew and Gerry both show up in ep 4. There is lots coming and it will take some time :)

its going ok, except when it gets to Thursdays and i realize that the only think i have to look forward to are Spanish tests everything just blurs together

ive tried to come up with serious theories but all i got are silly head canons 😔

but ive been relistening to tma and just started the silt verses so i got that

i never finished the last season of tma and i dont really plan to. tbh i will wait and see what i hear abt the sequel. but by god i am tempted to relisten to the earlier seasons now that we r all talking abt it again.

I can see everything from here, and that’s still just a hint of what he must be feeling –" MARTIN: [Warning] "Jon…" JON: "– as he watches a man run screaming down endless dark alleys that close and crush and press –" [RUMBLING SOUNDS START TO RISE] MARTIN: [Hard warning] "Jon…" JON: "Hm?" MARTIN: "Stay with me." This is the moment it seems we're losing Jon. Until now, yes, the fear fed him and it felt good for it. But now he really seems to crave it, consider it...

But you just did one for Ro– [Realisation] Oh no…" Those gasps of Jon that follow! Like he can't even try to swallow it down again, or keep it together a bit longer. Completely gone, he can only take one last breath before the wave hits him.

And another job interview! These are really heavy Eye stuff...

"He feels that prickly panic building in the back of his skull, that worry that spills through: he knows. He knows I’m high." Okay, imagine me, calmly pushing the lawn mower up and down the length of the garden, suddenly bursting into laughter XD

I wonder what's up with the parts that are spoken by Jonah!Elias. It is Ben's voice in there, and it is the same effect as Elias has as pupil of the Eye. Is this statement a group project? Jon and Jonah!Elias singing a duet?

"The image of a scuttling, filthy creature, eight eyes glinting out in the darkness, crawls into his mind, and he shudders, looking away for a second. But the uninvited thought keeps going. He imagines the spider moving up his leg, his body, he imagines feeling its bristling hairs against the skin of his shoulder, his throat, his cheek. It’s spindly probing legs finding their way up his face. Elias can’t stop himself picturing that spider sat there, venom dripping from fangs that hang, poised over his eye. He can’t shut his eye. A cough from over the desk breaks his train of thought. His interviewer is staring at him, and all at once he’s back with himself, burning with embarrassment. Those eyes stare, impassive and stern as ever, but… is that a twinkle of satisfaction? As though he has been given him an answer he likes." Elias did something like this with Rosie as well... Did he do this at every interview? What would this have looked like at Jon's interview? Martin's? Sasha's? Tim's?

"What should he say? That he had no idea why he wanted this job? That he was all alone in the world, no friends, no family, nothing but the deep certainty that he deserved better." Jonah preferred people like these I think. People who wouldn't be missed if they suddenly vanished, or had a sudden change in personality.

[STRANGE STATIC RISES. A FAINT REPEATING RUMBLING SOUND STARTS UP] "Elias has the briefest of flashes, a sudden burst of terror, an image of himself, strapped down, helpless." I like that repeating rumbling sound that keeps playing for the rest of the statement.

MARTIN: "Was that… the real Elias? Is he still in there then?" JON: "No… No. It was…" Me, pushing the lawn mower: "An Echo!"

JON: "an echo." me: “HA!” (I'm so proud of that moment XDD)

JON: "If we kill Jonah Magnus, I take his place." MARTIN: "Oh god." JON: "And I think… that’s exactly what it wants." Is this what the Eye wants, or is this what Jon wants...? Also Martin will comment on this perfectly in the next episode...
