sam and alice have such a beautiful relationship. it is clearly a dynamic based on long term deep-seated genuine care and intimate knowledge of each other, which is why it is just so heartwarming to see that they still manage to constantly say just bordering on friendship-endingly cruel things to each other because they have matching cases of late stage foot-in-mouth disease. <3

Ok the fact that Jon wakes up after the whole ordeal with the Unknowing, having been plagued by nightmares while being stuck in a coma for 6 months, only to be greeted by Georgie saying him waking up doesn’t seem like a second chance at life & Basira silently admitting she’s not happy he’s alive all while learning that Tim is dead & Daisy is presumed dead. Can someone please just give this man a hug! Please! This man needs some love, not mistrust & resentment!

my heart hurts so bad for Alice. she was just standing there listening to Sam ask Celia on a date and getting her heart broken all over again, and then went straight into making fun of Sam and cracking jokes like nothing was wrong.

ok. years have passed and we've had some distance, so i'm finally gonna take the leap of faith that tma fandom is finally ready to hear me on this. let's talk about tannins.
161 was the first tma episode i heard on early release, and i felt the bit where martin declines wine and cites tannins was pretty obvious in its implications. cool, got it, say no more.
imagine my surprise when i was one of maybe three people i saw read between the lines there, in a fandom famous for red stringing--a fandom that immediately caught the much less obvious thread of ignition sources in the same episode. i'll spell it out: alcohol is an issue for martin.
maybe it just felt obvious because addiction is a pet issue for me--as it is for jonny, who has said everything he writes is filtered through a lens of addiction. i don't know if that's due to his own experience or a loved one's, and i won't speculate; i also don't know if martin personally struggled with drinking or just avoids it for fear he would, but alcohol would fit what we know of his family. his dad walking out and his mum spiralling into bitter wallowing and verbal abuse? i'd bet one or both of them drank, yeah.
on a basic level martin tries to decline alcohol, and that alone should have raised eyebrows given what we know of martin and, again, a fandom that dissects everything. we already knew martin "K" blackwood lied about his personal life and his family in particular, especially pre-canon, which is when this flashback took place. i was shocked that everyone took his flimsy excuse at face value with no further questions.
and the excuse is flimsy. martin turns down wine by--nervously--exclaiming tannins are "a proven headache trigger!" which sounds like trivia from a magazine cover and not the words of someone who actually has headaches--and it hasn't come up before or since. jon, confused, points out that tea, a drink martin consumes to a degree that is memetic both in- and out-of-universe, also contains tannins, and martin squawks a panicked, "what?!"
if tannins are enough of a concern for martin that he knew they're in wine and so avoids it, why didn't he know they're in his drink of choice? why does he still drink tea at the time of canon, and why doesn't he struggle with constant headaches from consuming 'a proven headache trigger' day in and day out? why, indeed, would someone avoid wine and not tea?
when sasha insists martin drink he caves and agrees to 'just a drop'. i imagine him pouring it in a plant, which admittedly he could have done if tannins really were the issue. i will say that i, for one, would be less likely to falsely agree to something that makes me physically ill than to a private issue that i'd rather not be pressed on any further. this scene also establishes martin's birthday was an ice cream party instead of the more traditional visit to a pub.
also, this scene was in the first episode of the final season, as one of three flashbacks that could have been to any pre-canon event in the archives. prime narrative real estate. not really time one would waste on establishing the important character context that martin has... headaches. which never comes up before or after, even regarding the week he spent in spiral town. but you know what is pretty crucial character background...?
it felt like a no-brainer, and yet all i saw was h/c fluff about jon attending to martin's headaches. and i hate feeling bitter about disability representation. i want folks with chronic headaches to feel seen and have fluffy escapist fantasies. i don't want to be mad about people portraying a character with a disability. but, guys? you got the wrong disability. jonny sent a clear message, and it went over fandom's head.

A story where the main threat to the world is Goop That Makes You Evil. There's a big bad main villain who got drenched in it and is evil now and wants to spread the goop everywhere, because nobody else should have nice things if they couldn't. Every single character treats touching the goop as a fate as good as death, because surely you might as well be dead if who you used to be as a person is completely gone.
In the final dramatic end battle, the protagonist gets dropped in the goop. This whole time you'll be waiting for them to be somehow heroically rescued at the very last second, or miraculously saved by some buckwild Deus Ex Machina bullshit twist, but nope, into the goop they go. Submerged entirely and without a doubt that they're all the way in there.
And once everyone has managed to process this horrifying event, and the villain is just about to start gloating, the protagonist crawls out of the goop, shaking off smoke tendrils, spitting out something black and oily green, coughing up a few flames of purple fire, looking positively Fucked Up and villainous. And pauses to reflect that they're still the same person.
Like sure they're irrevocably changed in some ways, and there are parts of the person they used to be that they're never going to get back, but ultimately they're not some different person now. And then it clicks. The goop that makes you evil didn't turn the villain evil. This whole time, it's only been their excuse for being so cruel, sadistic and petty, while having the audacity to act like they had no choice. The protagonist muses that sure, making the right choices feels a bit harder now, but it's still a choice.
And in that moment both the hero and the villain realise the same things. The goop didn't turn the villain evil, and the protagonist isn't evil now that they were also immersed in the goop. They are, however, within punching distance of the villain and very, very angry.

A non-exhaustive list of TMA characters and the crimes they could be realistically charged with
So I had a conversation with my friends @mossy-bonez, @pictureofdoriaaaaaangay, and @melandrops earlier about what crimes various characters in TMA could actually realistically be convicted of, and now I've made a whole list :')
Note before we begin: Neither I or my friends are at all trained in law professionally, and two of us live the United States, meaning that some laws may be different, have different conditions, etc, and thus may not 100% accurate to laws in the UK/England specifically. It is also completely possible that there are other crimes these characters could be charged with that we simply missed. This is ultimately just for fun as well and not meant to be anything serious, so just keep that in mind when reading through this. With that said, here's the list:
Jon: Breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, murder, obstruction of justice, stalking, theft, unlawful surveillance, criminal harassment, being complicit in criminal acts
Martin: Breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, being an accessory to murder, arson, embezzlement (possibly), obstruction of justice, murder, being complicit in criminal acts
Tim: Breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, blackmail (possibly), reckless endangerment, unlawful possession and use of explosives, arson, embezzlement (possibly), being complicit in criminal acts
Sasha: Cyber crimes, blackmail (possibly), obstruction of justice, being complicit in criminal acts
Elias: Murder, unlawful possession and use of a firearm (possibly), tax fraud/tax evasion (possibly), money laundering (possibly), blackmail, reckless endangerment, violations of workers' rights, stalking, obstruction of justice, unlawful surveillance
Daisy: Murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, blackmail, police brutality, excessive use of force, reckless endangerment, obstruction of justice, badgering of witnesses, leading of witnesses, violation of others' Miranda rights (or the UK equivalent), being complicit in criminal acts
Basira: Being an accessory to murder, being complicit in criminal acts, obstruction of justice, murder, harboring a fugitive, violation of others' Miranda rights (or the UK equivalent), aggravated assault, being complicit in criminal acts
Gerry: Breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, arson, theft, aggravated assault, being complicit in criminal acts
Nikola: Kidnapping, obstruction of justice, breaking and entering, trespassing, aggravated assault, sexual assault (possibly), reckless endangerment
Georgie: Obstruction of justice, harboring a fugitive, being complicit in criminal acts, being an accessory to murder, being complicit in criminal acts
Melanie: Attempted murder, aggravated assault, breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, unauthorized filming, obstruction of justice, being complicit in criminal acts
Gertrude: Arson, unlawful possession and use of a firearm (possibly), murder, aggravated assault, blackmail, breaking and entering, trespassing, destruction of private property, obstruction of justice, unlawful surveillance, being complicit in criminal acts

Anyway what I've gathered from this episode is that it's Sam who asked Alice out, forever ago, and it was just as cute and fumbly and brave as he did with Celia.
Alice is standing in that corridor having FLASHBACKS of younger Sam's soft eager eyes, the fidgeting of his hands, the having-to-try-three-times to succeed, but they were in Alice's then room, listening to a new album, already friends, legs so close to one another, and Alice had laughed and said "Are you asking me out?" and he'd retorted, more easily, so honestly, "Well yes. I really like you, you know?" and Alice's laughter had came to a sort of awkward weird stop and she'd gone "well, okay then. i like you too, i guess." "Such high praise" Sam had grinned and nudged her shoulder but then also tentatively brushed his hands against her fingers and Alice had said "Shut it" but let their hands get intertwined and they'd kept listening to music and --
Celia is going "Oh, sorry, Alice, I didn't see you there" and Alice is back to the present and Sam is still so lovely, so warm and fond and he knows her so well and he's already rolling his eyes at what he assumes is going to be mocking, and who's Alice to prove him wrong, huh?
