Midnights duality (part 2): Meet me at midnight

So, we’ve established that Midnights is the era where Taylor makes it known that there are two versions of her story, and that the prevailing narrative can’t be trusted and she’s letting a second (conflicting) narrative exist alongside it. This brings me back to the sentence that concluded the album announcement and opened the first track: Meet me at midnight.

Sounds so simple, right? But who are we meeting at midnight? It’s not the public Taylor, because we’ve known her for a while. So it must be the private one, the one that wears trainers and a T-shirt and bleeds purple glitter. Let’s meet her.

Where, other than in the mv, do we see this private Taylor? On the big screen during the Eras tour performance of Anti Hero. And what is she doing? Screaming and waving at us before she walks off in a huff. Guess no one was there to meet her…

She is also the one taking notes when performance Taylor is doing the teaching. I find it noteworthy that the public Taylor here is dressed in 1989 outfit and is holding the pointer stick in the same way she used to swing and hold the golf club in the Blank Space performance on the 1989 tour. She is also the one slut-shaming and bullying Taylor about her weight in the bathroom scene, two things we know were very prominent during the 1989 era so this ‘Anti Hero’ villain is her 1989 self, the height of her fame and perfectly crafted public persona. So this private Taylor that we are meeting is taking notes from her 1989 self. Interesting… And even more interesting that we are now getting a vault track on 1989tv called SLUT!. And I have just learned today that we are quite possibly getting a mv for this song… so would this be the place to meet our new Taylor? I think it’s a contender.

I have said in my post about the burning Lover house, that I take from the blue flames that 1989tv will move the narrative of this new Taylor forward quite a bit and as we are nearing the release (5 days to go as I’m writing this) I get that feeling more and more. Yes, I am not blind or deaf, I am very well aware that Taylor is currently doing her very best performance of NFL player’s gf, but I actually think that furthers my duality in public narrative and performance art point from part 1. Because, while I’m sure I don’t need to give you any examples of the excessive articles and media coverage of Taylor’s outings with either MH or TK, I just want to remind you of what other articles and media coverage has emerged in recent months, and this is not a story that would have made the NY Times or Cosmopolitan even a year ago.

Yep, Gaylor has entered the mainstream media. Not something that was on my 2023 bingo card, if I’m honest. Not even during the spring and summer of 2019, during Taylor’s soft launch phase, was her queerness this openly discussed in mainstream media. And not just as a general idea, some of the articles are linking her to very specific women in the past and, as if that wasn’t enough, the women in question have promptly appeared in public, either non-denying a relationship with her (looking at you DA), or showing up at her concert after a supposed years-long feud, adding fuel to the fire. And didn’t Taylor make a spectacle of looking lovingly up at Karlie in the stands at the last LA show, a show that she hyped up enough with 1989 announcement easter eggs that she could be sure everyone was watching. She wants to give this new narrative a platform. Yes, the straight girl pap walks are happening, but so is this. Pick your narrative. Especially the inclusion of Taylor in posts from official LGBTQ charities like Stonewall and Glaad seems significant to me, because they are non-profit organisations that are dedicated exclusively to preserving and telling queer people’s stories and would never risk their reputation or seriousness of their cause by participating in clout chasing or name dropping. And I know that these two things going on simultaneously seem super confusing, but I’m starting to think the confusion is part of the act. This is the tale of the two Taylors and it’s our job to work out which is which. The Stonewall Archive specifically tagged Taylor in their post about an exhibit on media coverage and public perception… they know something we don’t.

The re-emergence of pap walks alone is something I wasn’t expecting. Over the last 7 years we have known Taylor as a private person after her turbulent 1989 era. She was mostly quiet, stayed out of the headlines, no pap walks or public appearances outside of award shows and select performances. After all, reputation Taylor told us that the old Taylor died and the new version didn’t explain anything or show her face in public much. But 2023 Taylor has felt a lot like that old Taylor, right?? The pap walks, the girl squad, the high publicity romances… So, hasn’t Taylor learned her lesson from her 1989 self after all?

I think she has, but she wants the rest of the world to eat their words and see how ridiculous this is. Will this all be part of a Slut! mv? Maybe. Or it could be a way to distract the fanbase from something else that’s going on. One very notable difference in the pap walks now is how confidently herself she is when she’s photographed with her friends or going to the studio. Back in 2014 she would leave the gym looking like she was walking the runway with not a hair out of place, and now she is walking the streets of NYC looking queer as ever. (I swear she googled ‘How to look like a lesbian’ before picking that second outfit…) And I’ve seen how much it confuses the swifties. And I’m here for it 😋 Question though, if she’s going into the studio looking this gay, is the music coming out of these sessions going to be equally💅 ?

Something is brewing and 1989tv is the next thing on the horizon, so let’s look at that.

Midnight and Sunrise

Having been introduced to our new Taylor at the beginning of Midnights, she’s taken us through the main album, then the 3am bonus tracks, to the til dawn edition. With every new midnights edition we have worked our way through the night from midnight, to 3am, to dawn. So, next would be sunrise, right? And there have actually been a few mentions of sunrise and daylight in both the 1989tv marketing and other media coverage. I’ve spoken about the midnights to daylight theory before, as it’s one that many Gaylors have speculated on, but I think there has been quite a bit of movement on this recently.

Firstly, there is the yellow 1989tv vinyl that is conveniently named the ‘Sunrise Boulevard edition’. Not only does it have the word sunrise in it, it is also a direct reference to the Stonewall National Museum & Archive, which is located on this road in Fort Lauderdale, FL. And with the emergence of all the other variations of the 1989tv vinyl, it is easy to spot that they all have a sunlit beach theme (a big change from the OG 1989 city theme!) and with the recent leak of a purple version on the website of a record shop, we now have a full rainbow of 1989tv vinyls. Sunrise and rainbows… I think I have an idea where this may be going. But hang on, there is more.

Remember when I said that the Stonewall National Archive knows something we don’t? A few days ago, they posted this on their Instagram with lyrics from Taylor’s happiness, highlighting and italicising the word sunrise and pointing everybody’s nose in the caption to their address at 1300 E Sunrise Boulevard:

This feels VERY intentional. And I’ve never really looked at the happiness lyrics in that way, having taken the song to be about Scott B and her old label, but when Stonewall is using these exact lines in that context, with a strong suggestion that they have insider knowledge, it seems worth looking at them again.

In the caption, SNMAL say that they ‘celebrate the glorious sunrise of LGBTQ+ history’ with the pride flag and sunshine emoji. So, could it be that the Sunrise Blvd vinyl and accompanying rainbow variations of 1989tv are going to bring some kind of moment in history for LGBTQ people? It certainly sounds like this is about more than just Taylor. Perhaps furthering the theory that there may be a double album on the horizon with the second one being all collaborations. Stonewall also liked a comment on this post that said that something is in the air 🌈

They also included the line about flickers of light from the dress I wore at midnight. Flickers of light, as in glimpses of her queerness? The ones we are seeing now in all those articles are social posts? The mention of a dress immediately throws my mind back to the rainbow dress that Billy Porter ended up wearing at World Pride 2019, but that was almost certainly meant for Taylor. And out of all the photos of Taylor from the VMAs this year, which one did GLAAD choose to post on their Instagram in September? Yep, the one with Billy Porter. Takes me back to 2019… and something else does too, actually: The Cruel Summer live single release.

Cruel Summer was released as a single this June, 4 years after its initial release. And almost made it to No.1. It was certainly on the radio A LOT. The Lover set is also the opening act of the Eras tour, so this summer has certainly had some 2019 throwbacks. And remember how the Lover era started? With ME! Out now! on Lesbian Visibility Day, followed by the sunshine and rainbows parade that was the mv and (as we later learned from the documentary) 'Cats, unicorns and gay pride... things that make me ME.' And now, in October 2023, Taylor released a live version of Cruel Summer and used the very photo from the 2019 shoot as a cover for the single. And not only was that a 2019 photo shoot, it was the last photo she posted on her instagram in June 2019 before she was meant to wear the dress at NYC Pride. I think she captioned it something like 'calm before the storm'. And now that photo has made a comeback. If I were a betting woman...(and I've learned better than to ever make predictions when it comes to Miss Taylor Swift these days) but if I were I'd say it looks like she's taking another run at this. Meet ME at midnight...and then follow me into the daylight. ☀

And one more thing before I conclude this monstrosity of an essay, I found Taylornation's post for the midnights anniversary last week a bit mysterious:

It says 'Tonight we celebrate an album written by the one that could make us stay. After all the sleepless nights and friendship bracelets we've shared, we hope you know you're never really on your own, kid.' Sounds a bit like a pep talk (and a plea at the same time) to me. Why do the fans need reminding of the good times and be asked to stay? Where would they go and why?? And the first picture in the carousel is our girl 'home Taylor' from the Anti Hero mv, looking contemplative, maybe waiting for someone to come and finally let her out of that house. And the photo immediately after it is Taylor as we know her, smiling for photos with her fans at the movie premier. The two Taylors again...but one is in black and white and the other is in screaming colour 😉iykyk.

a love note (and some fics)

Sometimes I wonder if there's really anything bigger out there - the universe, some kind of higher power, fate - and then I think about how extremely lucky I am that I became obsessed with a certain tv show and its characters at just the right time so that I could befriend someone who then introduced me to a particular book at exactly the right time to fall in love with those characters as well. And then, because of my need to have more of those characters, I went looking for more stories about them at exactly the right time to meet a group of people (some of them together, some of them later, but that doesn't matter) who would go on to become my friends.

There must be something, right? To bring together a group of people who live in five to seven different time zones depending on the time of year. To create my safest spaces on the internet. To share not just our love for a book and its characters, but parts of our lives with each other. To have them all wedge themselves into the soft spaces of my heart and never leave.

I've been thinking about this a lot over the last two weeks, because those people conspired and collaborated to gift me a collection of 10 incredible fics for a milestone birthday (tomorrow!) - even though some of them haven't written fic for months and months, or don't write for this fandom at all anymore, or have recently been finding it hard to make words work and finish fics, or are just plain busy with other projects and life. That they took the time to find and make words for me means everything and more 💖💖

I've been absolutely overwhelmed with love these past 10 days (probably to the surprise of no one, I have cried at every single fic drop and I'm crying writing this now). So, I want to share the wonderful fics that they've written for me with you all because it's the least I can do to pay it forward and they're objectively stellar fics. yeah, I read some of that book about William Alwyn. Everyone involved is such a mess 😂. I can see the parallels with folklore/evermore. His mother was a witch (so you've got the sort of fairytale vibe covered). He was a bigamist who didn't bother to divorce his first wife before marrying his second (so you've got the cheating/more than one relationship at once thing covered). He had a mental breakdown (like TS claimed she was having...). He ran away to the countryside to make art (again, like TS). We know she can only normally write about boys, so when she came out with something new, she must have got the inspiration from someone else. So I'm thinking that conspiracy is not all that far-fetched. Would also explain why they chose William's name for the pseudonymous co-writer 🤔

no wonder why we loved folklore and evermore more than anything else she'd ever made, it flowed out of her when she spent time with joe in the pandemic. he influenced her to grow artistically, even she admitted that these albums included both their favourite artists who became taylor's favourite after joe suggested them. so a huge part of it is him and his family stories. like we can clearly see how she downgraded after that when staying with jack and making MIDnights. all of her rerecordings are supposedly shitty as well, now i wonder what kind of himbo music is she gonna make while staying with tk bestie

First glance, Jaya is a nice, polite, and quiet girl. She tries to keep conversations to a minimum when talking to customers/strangers. She keep to herself and daydream at lot.

Once you get to know her and become a good friend of hers, She is talkative and loves to learn about her friends. She is a little bit unhinged, too. Lucy walked into the living room to see Jaya seated on the couch, eating a box of uncooked pasta. Jaya said she wanted chips but didn't want to walk to the convenience store. Or the time TK saw Jaya feeding a horde of raccoons outside the diner during their night shift. Jaya calls the horde of raccoons The Midnight Crew.

--------------Biography--------------

Jaya works at the diner as a waitress to pay for culinary art class in community college. She always wanted to be a baker since she was a young kid and planned to have her own bakery. She even makes dessert in the diner when the diner is busy, and TK can't keep up with orders.

Jaya doesn't have a good relationship with her parents, but she have a good relationship with her younger sister, Laila. They both love outer-space, but her sister focus on stars and planets rather than aliens.

Jaya loves for outer space, and supernatural obsession comes from when she believes she meets an alien as a kid. No one believes her, except Lucy.

--------------Relationship--------------

TK: Jaya considers TK as a good friend and coworker. She likes how she can be herself with him without him judging her about her obsession with aliens and supernatural.

Lucy: Jaya didn't talk with Lucy for the first few weeks when they became roommates. However, after having a rough day at work and Lucy offering Jaya a hit of her blunt. They talk for hours about weird philosophical stuff, supernatural, terriable exs, and ate two whole pizza together. Let's just say these two became best of friends. Jaya even got Lucy a job at the diner, too.

Don: Jaya doesn't talk to Don much. She says a simple greeting and goodbye when she goes to him to pay rent.

Apparently TK won't be there with TS for Grammys because of his Super Bowl practice in Las Vegas. Schedule and rules are strict and he can't be distracted. Now Grammys are happening in LA, starts from 8pm i guess. He surely won't practice at night right? And Vegas to LA flight is a little over 1 hr long. He can definitely be there if he wants and go back to Vegas the same night in ✨ Taylor's jet ✨ I mean if she can come back right after finishing long tiring shows, flying through different timezones by a 10+ hours long flight just to be there for him on his Super Bowl day then why can't he fly to the neighbouring state to be there with her for her special night? What excuse is this

I’m a fan of Taylor Swift and her music. I’m looking forward to the Grammys because I like the album Midnights and I love to see how Taylor Swift, who I’m a fan of, dresses for and dances at the Grammys. I’ve been watching her at that event for over a decade and enjoy seeing Taylor Swift, (her job is being a singer) be recognised for her art.

While she was on a break she dated someone who is working then but I don’t GAF about him or his job.

They're unique and adorable and I love that a whole other kind of artistic skill is being used to create and share work in our fandom - it's so so endlessly cool to me. A masterlist of Anne's cross stiches is linked above, and I want to highlight this iconic quote of TK's, the dinner table argument, the proposal, the wedding vows for which a comically large hoop was needed, Season 1 Tarlos, Season 2 Tarlos, and Season 3 Tarlos. So many great ones! Anne has also made gifts based on fanfic, which is so lovely.

I was going through some of your asks and your responses but what i want to mention now is something I don’t think you taekookers have realized yet or maybe you have but just have not been able to admit it.

So Jk will most probably support Tae. He might sing a few of his songs on Live and depending on Tae’s promotion, Jk might show up for him just as he showed up for Jk. But…….for your own peace of mind, don’t expect Jk to go as far as he went for Jimin. Jk won’t do that. I’m not someone who sees the future to know ofcourse but i am talking based on precedents. Now let me ask you, have y’all ever seen Jk hype Tae up as he does Jimin? Have u ever paid attention to the members while they were reacting to MV’s? Did u ever see Jk hype anyone up as much as he did Jimin? Short answer no! And b4 u get me wrong it’s not cuz i think Jk is dating Jimin no! It cuz Jk has made it clear only a million times that Jimin inspires him. He loves the music Jimin makes. He admires Jimin’s work ethic, he loves his art and in his own words, Jimin is his catalyst! Jk has sang every single one if Jimin’s songs except alone and Face off. He wasn’t necessarily doing it to be supportive, probably just cuz he actually enjoys watching Jimin. Seeing that youtube recommended a funny video of BTS teasing Jimin, his algorithm must be filled with Jimin content cuz he probably watches alot of it. He started since 2016, excitedly singing Jimin’s songs on his Lives and Vlogs. He knows a majority of Jimin’s songs by heart, some because he was literally always there with him for rehearsal after everyone else including his “boyfriend” had left (serendipity, filter) so Jk knows these songs.

Y’all may have not noticed it but even though Taekook share their songs with each other first, Jk doesn’t seem to know the lyrics to Tae’s songs. Hell he literally said it. On his birthday live last year, he tried singing along to “Christmas Love” but turned the song off and said he didn’t know the lyrics. On his last live, he played “winter bear” but only hummed along to it cuz he probably doesn’t know the lyrics that well and he didn’t even wait for the song to end b4 he turned it off. This is not me trying to be offensive, i’m just stating facts.

Notice how pple have never really had to ask for Jk to listen to Jimin’s song b4 he did? He did it on his own always, with the only exception being “letter” all the other songs he listened to, no one asked him to do it. No one asked him about Jimin’s album b4 he asked us to wait for something amazing dropping at midnight! Which was SMF pt 2 teaser! No one asked him for a spoiler b4 he played the guitar to the tune of “letter” the night b4 Jimin’s album dropped! No one asked him to watch Jimin on Suchwita! No one asked him to react to JM’s mv’s, listen to Angel pt 1, watch Jimin on Lee mujin, sing along to like crazy. He did all those on his own. And notice how he always knew all or almost all of the lyrics? That is because when Jk does that, it is cuz that is what he wants to do! That is what he is able to concentrate on. Jk liking funny tae video or funny art of tk is not a deal shippers makes it to be be it jkkrs or tkkrs cause it's a funny video for god's sake and he has liked that for all the members (except for jm till now ig but that's nothing) so what's the big deal if he has liked for tk too? Don't forgot his first like since the acct went public is an edit for mingyu to seven and that video is not even a funny video like the way all his other likes are (and it's the only video he has liked like that) so if y'all are ignoring then why can't you ignore other videos? Now if this was a jm video or tae video shippers would have gone crazy over it but since it's someone who's not their ship everyone ignored it then why can't you ignore the videos which like silly? He has liked tens of funny videos so idk what's so significant about those likes of his unless he actually likes something questioning or suggestive.

Same thing with going live. When tae went live from jk's house without even jk knowing many made a big deal or the time when tae asked jk to go live with him on Instagram BUT then you have jungkook himself willingly going live with mingyu from his House at midnight that even mingyu was surprised (cause maybe mingyu never went live like that at night) while being drunk and giggling and shit so what's big deal about jk going live with anyone?

See to bring mingyu into this I'm not saying there's anything going on there cause i know nothing is going on there and they bestie but my intention is many of the things that shipeprs made big deal out of are very small things for them and y'all should know exactly what are the things you should be analysing and all. Trying to make something out of nothing or everything is such a delulu behaviour.

I feel like you haven't seen the Mingyu stuff?

People started shipping him with Jk. I got asks saying that Jk was looking at Mingyu with eyes of love and he would do with Mingyu things he used to do with Jimin...all because of a 4 minute live.

So it's not shippers being delulu but people will grab on to anything that is close to Jk and make it seem romantic when it's not.

Jk liked that video of Tae and it's completely normal...but try explaining that to tkkrs.

Ultimately, Jk knows how the things he does come across. He KNOWS that liking a Tae video will get tkkrs riled up. He knows that liking a girl idol video will get people curious. He knows that mentioning Jimin will keep people expectant. He's a grown man that's been in the industry 10 years so he knows what having a public image means.

Even if he isn't doing things with malice, he knows that things cause a reaction.

So keeping on eye on things and discussing stuff is not making stuff out of nowhere...it's looking into things like we do with everything.

Seeing everything with rose colored glasses is the actual delulu behavior to me.

“So, how are we going to tell the others?” TK asked late the next morning, popping a blueberry into his mouth as he kicked his feet back and forth a bit.

It had taken no time at all for him to find his new favorite place in the kitchen to sit and watch his man. He took full advantage of their counter being L-shaped, slouching into the corner it made. That way, he was close enough to the sink to pull Carlos over whenever the man needed to clean a knife or wash his hands, and also sat right next to where Carlos prepared some of the ingredients.

Not that he was stealing them or anything…

Munching on another blueberry, he took in Carlos’ grin, letting it warm him as his man looked right at him.

“Have they been bugging you as well?”

“Only all the time,” TK replied with a laugh, reaching for a cut strawberry next. “Nancy was just about to murder me, she wanted to know the tea so badly.”

“Did you not tell her?”

Carlos’ genuine surprise struck him but TK still tried for a smile. “How could I have told her about making the biggest mistake of my life? It was too painful to think about, let alone talk about…” He had to swallow when his voice gave out, all these emotions bubbling up inside of him again.

He heard Carlos put the whisk down, leaving the pancake batter behind as he stepped right into the V of TK’s legs, kissing him deep and long and thoroughly. Humming into the kiss, TK let it chase away the dark mood. No matter how much they had kissed and touched and whispered reassurances over the past twenty hours or so, there could never be enough of it, at least not in TK’s opinion.

They had followed his plan the previous night, eating a light midnight snack right at this very counter he was sitting on now. After, they had snuggled up on the couch but for the life of him, TK wouldn’t be able to say what they had watched. Because the moment he had been back in Carlos’ arms, they had been kissing until they had fallen asleep.

The morning had started as planned as well, their couch proven to be an excellent place for some mind-blowing sex. And now, it was pancake time…

“You taste fruity,” Carlos murmured against his lips, leaving one, two, three more pecks before leaning back just far enough to grin at TK. “Do I need to start putting out fake ingredients again for you to ‘steal’? So there’s enough left for our actual food?”

TK couldn’t help the silly wide grin that spread over his face as he slung his arms over Carlos’ shoulders, holding him close. “Yes, please do,” he begged. “I’ve missed that.” Pulling him in, he pressed kisses along Carlos’ jaw and down his neck as he whispered. “I’ve missed you cooking for me, I’ve missed your food and how well you know me, how you always know just what to put out to distract me. I’ve missed all these little moments we create, with just us…” Pulling back, he looked Carlos deep in his eyes. “I’ve missed you. I’ve missed us.”

Carlos’ hands were beneath his shirt before their lips even connected again.

“I’ve missed you, too,” Carlos whispered in between kisses – and TK was eternally grateful that Carlos hadn’t gotten yet to start the stove.

The counter was christened next…
