So I look out at the stars just like me
And throw caution to every warning sign
What we do in this moment is defining
And we can take it on if we align
———————-
This was done before seeing Wish, but I was already in love with the reprise of This Wish. Seeing the scenario play out in the movie was very emotional.
At the time, I visualize the keyblade master’s wish or prayer in his hour of need miraculously answered across the realities. Unfortunately I forgot Riku was supposed be in Unreality as well.

🧶Star learns that it’s harder to play with yarn in his human form, and Asha finds it pretty funny 😂 (And yes, he can still float as a human. And shapeshift back into a star whenever he wants).🧶

I was watching a video of someone breaking down the lyrics of Wish and why fundamentally they don’t work; but the whole thing angers me because it Could have worked if they just went with their original idea to Begin with. I’ve mentioned before that they should have gone with Star Boy but the songs in Wish REALLY emphasize WHY that sentiment rings true. Because “At All Costs” was SUPPOSED to be a duet between Asha and Star Boy because the whole thing sounds like a lovers lullaby and him wanting to love Asha “as a human does” per say. But now it’s just Asha and Magnifico singing to a bunch of crystal balls which loses most of the emphasis that song was trying to portray in the First place (not to mention how Stupid it is that the wishes are just crystal balls like this is where the 2d animation would have stood out).
Now, “I’m a Star!” Just needs to be entirely scrapped and reworked cause they could have used the song to show how Star Boy thinks and feels about things upon his initial introduction cause I’d presume that Star Boy would probably be someone very upbeat and excitable, but incredibly naïve about how the world works at the same time.
And “This is the Thanks I Get?!” COULD have really worked if they went with this plan as well cause Magnifico is supposed to be feeling unappreciated and disrespected and if Asha were his daughter and going against him cause of her feelings for Star Boy and how Magnifico was handling the wishes then That makes sense. But in the film we got, the town already seems to respect him and he doesn’t really have a reason for the way he acts which is why his switch to villain seems so abrupt.
Also the lyrics, rhythm and cadence would need a Drastic change but that would probably be Disney needing to just fire Julia Michaels and going with someone who’s Profession is making lyrics for Musical Theater instead of pop songs cause all these lyrics are just “ohh wishes!” “Ohhh stars!” And whatnot instead of building up Anything narratively. (Cause even though Lin Manuel Miranda has kinda become a meme at this point he still Knows how lyrics should build a story. Except for the Scuttlebutt but that’s just a one off thing that was truly Terrible). But hey, this is just me ranting on something that I should be letting go at this point but whatever 🤷‍♀️
(Also it bothers me that Disney was like “oh we can’t have Asha have a romantic interest in 2023 how can we show she’s a strong lead in 2023 if there’s a love interest!” Even though there’s Plenty of ways to do that with the two building off each other in a natural way and the fact that Asha doesn’t really have a character arc Anyways and her being Magnifico’s daughter would have made this work as well cause she’d have to choose between her feelings for Star Boy and going against her parents wishes just UHG I’m so pressed can someone make a Wish fixed fanfic so I can read that instead please?! Thank you.)

“This Wish” Rewrite ✨
(RFTS!Au Version)
Hello!! It’s Flicker here again!
I’ve decided to give a shot at rewriting Asha’s “I Want” song and see what I could come up with.
The original song was…okay. It’s not a bad thing to listen to. I personally think the chorus and the instrumental there is really pretty. It just felt weirdly lacking? I’m sure there are many people out there who share the same criticism with me, so I’m not going to go all out on that.
Anyways, back to the thing at hand.
For context:
RFTS!Asha is a servant girl at the castle who’s a dreamer and someone with a huge imagination for what there could be. The thing is, that spark has been buried down after the tragic loss of her father’s life. Now she’s terrified of having her hopes up, in fear of facing that same agony of losing another dream.
While she never lost that daydreaming habit of hers, Asha often finds herself cowering away rather than committing. And this often causes her to go back on some of her promises. She’s frustrated that this stupid flaw of hers is holding her back from reaching out to those she loves.
This is evident when Asha has secretly been noticing that Rosas’ citizens aren’t actually as happy as they claim to be. They’re dull, missing that zest and stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction. She knows there must be something they’re missing but…what? As the king’s assistant, she’s the only one close to him with a chance to negotiate on what could be done to address this problem.
But it’s the king! He’s snapped at her times before. What if…? But what about the people she loves?
As Asha sings this song, she fights an internal battle within while expressing her frustrations and how she wants to break free from the chains she’s made for herself.
…………….
Tumblr media
Isn’t this the place where dreams come true?
Then why does it all feel so way out of place?
If I could show them the life they have embraced,
Open their eyes to their own lies,
Would they question it all like I did?
But when I start, my head says “Sit Down,”
So how could I when I could barely be worth something?
For too long I have withdrawn, and avoided every song,
Now time has gone and now I don’t know where I belong,
So do I look up to the stars above me? Or keep caution at every warning sign?
Should I let the dreams within me rise and soar free?
Or should I pay no heed and stay in line?
Still, I hold this wish,
That they’ll have something more for them than this,
Still, I hold this wish,
That I’ll do something more for them than….this,
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, ah-ah
More than this, (oh-ah-ah-ah)
For many years, I’ve kept my head down low,
Still did what I was told when someone told me ‘No,’
Yet, there’s a part of me who’s just yearning to glow,
A part that’s just longing to know,
It just won’t let me go!
With all these reservations and hesitations, I’m not sure where to even begin,
The risks and failures are daunting but I can’t just lose this fire from deep within,
If I could just be pointed in any given direction on where to go and what to do,
My legs are shaking but my head’s held high,
The way you always taught me to….
So I look up to the stars to guide me,
And pray that they’d send some kind of sign,
I’m sure there will be challenges that find me,
But I want to take them on one at a time,
So I make this wish,
That they’ll have something more for them than this,
So I make this wish,
That I’ll do something more for them than….this,
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, ah-ah
More than this, (oh-ah-ah-ah)
So I make this wish…
That I’ll be something more….for us than…this…..
…….
The last line is meant to end at a sad note as Asha cowers away again, thinking that her wish to the skies has went unheard as per usual. No dramatic or hype instrumental at the end. Maybe a soft and melancholic melody instead?
Phew, my girl’s self esteem really is just: 📉📉📉
Btw, I want to make it clear that I AM NO SONGWRITER. So if the words are all clunky and weird at times, bear with me. 🥲
I don’t claim that this is “perfect” and “proof I could do better than Disney.” It’s just so I could better fit the song into my own version of the story. I might make a few changes along the way but we’ll see. :))
Thanks for Reading 💖

Pop songs I wish "Wish" had taken inspiration from for their soundtrack
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For context:
"Bigger" for "Welcome to Rosas." Kind of a cheat since "Bigger" is from a soundtrack (one affiliated with Disney, too), but it's an impactful opening track written and performed by a pop icon. The message of being part of something amazing and bigger than yourself is a wonderful message that WTR could've done well with, rather than a simple welcome song. Plus it could also show the desperation to have your wish granted, a selfishness beneath the surface, Disney-level altruism.
"Someone You Loved" for "At All Costs." Granted, AAC is the strongest song from the soundtrack. However, it was a missed opportunity to dive into Magnifco and Asha's pasts and motivations more. A bittersweet song like SYL (which was about losing someone close to you) would've been good inspiration to make this song just as wistful as it was beautiful.
"Sine From Above" for "This Wish." TW is...it's just so basic. If the rumors about Julia Michaels having three weeks to make the soundtrack and no changes is true, then I can't blame her. But the song is still terrible and lacks the awe and majesty that the marketing song should have. SFA is the better version of this song, basically.
"Just Like Magic" for "I'm a Star." Hot take: I wanted IAS to be a powerful ballad rather than a flat, cute-sy song, which may not be a popular idea since it'd come right after a powerful ballad. But anything was better than the educational tv-vibes it gave off. JLM is about the Laws of Attraction, about putting out good energy into the world and getting it back into yourself. Asha would need something like that after the "devastating" realization she discovered about her kingdom.
"This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" for "This is the Thanks I Get?!" Honestly, this is self-explanatory when you listen to both songs. It's like Taylor wrote a Magnifico song herself. And it's not even about being a villain! It's about being taken advantage of and dealing with ungrateful people. And on a darker note: Magnifico could be losing his sanity and hallucinating himself back in his village and saying how they wouldn't be ungrateful--or having to remind himself that he has to deal with ungrateful people, as that's the price for keeping their lives safe.
"Wide Awake" for "Knowing What I Know Now." Seeing how WA is about having a crushing realization hit you and feeling the freedom to move on from it is a powerful feeling, something that would've been better than KWIKN--though I do blame part of the song's failure on the fact that Asha's friends aren't fleshed out enough for the song not to be sung by random people.

About the “This Wish” Song
Tumblr media
What is with this line:
“And throw caution to every warning sign”
What?
The phrase is ‘throw caution to the wind.’ As in, “Abandon that hesitance by imagining yourself throwing caution into the wind, where it will be carried away.”
If you say, ‘throw caution to every warning sign’ it sounds stupid. The mental image is, “throw that feeling of caution at big stop signs and warning lights.” Why? Is she afraid of warning signs? Are they dangerous in and of themselves?
🙄
No. It’s just really stupidly worded. Sounds like it was written by AI, and the bot was trying to guess what word came next in the sentence. It sounds like Michael Scott trying to write an impactful sentence but it looks like this:
Tumblr media
What makes it worse is that it’s at a really high and energetic moment in the song, so it pulls a lot of attention in, and honestly, I’m going to see the movie, but it makes me hate every trailer.
“throOoo CAUTion to every warning SIgn—”

ASHA’S FATHER SHOULD HAVE DIED TO HIS WISH BEING CRUSHED (WISH IDEA)
🌟————————————
This is just an idea I have for my Wish AU. It also could’ve been a fix to the movie if they wanted King Magnifico to actually be evil. It’s a twist idea, but we’d get the point that he’s been a villain way before the start of the film. No this didn’t happen in the movie because Magnifico just finds out that he can do such a thing towards the end.
Tumblr media
So in the movie Asha’s father, Tomás, died of an unknown illness. What if that unknown illness was the after effects of having his wish crushed by King Magnifico? Magnifico does this because of something Tomás did or said that simply questioned his rule, just like how Asha questioned his rule years later. It could be a connection and a revelation for Asha to realize that Magnifico isn’t all that he seems. For this to work, in my opinion, is that Magnifico should’ve taken the people’s passion/spark to even commit to their dreams anyway instead of the memory of their wishes. That would’ve made Magnifico more villainous, and I can get into that idea in another post. For now, I’ll just call these passion/sparks “wishes” for the sake of being simple.
The timeline of events for the connection between Tomás and Magnifico would go like this: Magnifico and Tomás know of each other as they are both astrologists and philosophers or whatever. They have some professional relationship or they’ve been friends for a long while. Tomás could’ve also been a founder of Rosas alongside Magnifico and Amaya. Those are just three other ideas. Anyways, the point is that Magnifico thinks Tomás is all buddy-buddy with him and decides that he can trust him enough to keep the secret that everyone won’t get their wishes granted along with some very bad details. Tomás, seeing how ominous and suspicious this is, questions him why that’s the case and if he could just give the wishes back. Magnifico gets angry at him for even doubting his reign, especially because he’s actually crushing the wishes to get more power. After an argument ensues about how Magnifico is giving his citizens false hope and everything, Magnifico takes Tomás’s already given away wish from the ceiling. He threatens to crush his wish if he even speaks about it to anyone. It is at that point that Tomás’s passion/spark/wish is to reveal the lies about the kingdom to the people. Because wishes can change right?
Tumblr media
Tomás stares him in the eyes and says that he won’t be backed down that easily. So Magnifico crushes his wish and Tomás is now in a deep state of grief and depression. This sadness is so devastatingly strong that Tomás dies of a broken heart (inspired by Chef Gusteau from Ratatouille). This is why no medicine helped him get better. That is why it is an unknown illness to Asha and everyone else. With his wish crushed and the job is done, Tomás is sent home. He doesn’t want the same thing to happen to Asha or anyone because Magnifico is too powerful to be stopped. That’s why they need a higher power to defeat the amateur. It is human to think like that.
So that night after his wish getting crushed, Tomás is unable to do much about the situation. He can only speak and his last words to Asha is that “the stars are there to guide us. To inspire us. To believe in possibility” whatever he says. Being a philosopher and a guy who’s always talking about the stars (like they’re the real beings that can make our dreams come true), this would make sense for him to tell Asha this.
Tumblr media
But this could give Asha an arc. She’s wished to the stars that her father could get better, but he never did. She didn’t know that this unknown illness was the result of a crushed wish, and so she misguidedly blamed the stars for what happened to her father. Almost like a “why didn’t you help me when I needed you?” Kind of like Magnifico in that one graphic novel or something. Also, I’m still thinking if Magnifico should’ve have that sympathetic backstory. I mean, honestly I thought he was bullshitting about it until the movie confirms it was true because of his constant fear and paranoia (movie Magnifico is not a villain ya’ll, that’s just a misunderstood man that fell into the hands of an evil book 💀🙏🏽).
Tumblr media
That’s why I think this whole idea could’ve made him both a more compelling character and villain. And Asha could’ve been a more compelling heroine if she had a better arc where at the start of the movie, she’s like every other citizen putting her belief and faith into King Magnifico after the stars didn’t answer her prayers and and she feels resentment to them. Then she finds out what he’s doing with the wishes somehow (crushing them) and is now questioning everything she knows. She remembers her father’s words and looks back to the stars/heavens she’s been neglecting for the past couple years. She questions EVERYTHING and by the end of her song “This Wish” she should now fully look up to the stars to guide her towards helping the people.
Tumblr media
I know Asha questions Magnifico during her song, but it is known that she’s always looked up at the stars. But with this idea, we can have her stay away from her father’s beliefs in the stars, and once she knows the truth about the falsely-benevolent King Magnifico, she takes her father’s words again and gives it another try. Then Star or the Blue Fairy appears.
Tumblr media
Additionally, Asha would later learn in the movie that her father died because his wish was crushed and absorbed by King Magnifico. She realizes this when he crushes Sakina’s or Sabino’s wish and she remembers the effects. Or King Magnifico could just gloat about it to her when they’re magic-fighting or something.
This can be tweaked in the future, but it’s a nice little draft for this idea I’m just pouring my thoughts into. I will be posting more ideas and hopefully an official outline of how this movie could be fixed!

I've yet to see "Wish", waiting for it to come out on Disney plus, but listening to the soundtrack and the infamously weird lyrics of most of the tracks...
In "This Wish" we have the line....
Throw caution to every warning sign.
This one gave me a headache for a while and I've seen others critique it because it sounds like it's supposed to be a play on "throw caution to the wind" except it ends up meaning the opposite. Throwing caution to the wind is basically tossing your worry aside and diving straight in regardless. How do you throw caution AT a warning sign, unless it's like...you take the warning sign seriously and be cautious??
But the only thing I can think of, because I really don't want to think these song writers are this dense, is perhaps the meaning is meant to be like...She sees a warning sign and instead of heeding it, she's cautious about it? As in believing the sign itself? That the sign might be gaslighting?
Honestly the controversy of this movie has fascinated me enough so far and I've not even watched it.

My Revision Of Wish (pt 2): This Wish
Welcome back to more of my personal revision of Wish. Today, I will presenting my version of the film's "I Want" song, This Wish
This is the moment where Asha makes her wish for the townspeople of Rosas, after discovering a dark secret about her parents using the townspeoples' wishes to enhance their dark magic. She argues that they should give their wishes back to the people, while trying to keep what she saw a secret. In her frustration, she escapes from her palace walls to the Wishing Tree of the woodlands to make her wish.
Now, my biggest problem with 'This Wish' is that Julia Michaels has written the song to be generalized and more likely to be sung by any character, instead of making it feel like Asha's song. It sure doesn't help that the song was written before the script... I'm not even kidding! It's a true story!
The song is supposed to be our big "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" moment, and also establishing Asha's character: Her passions, her love for art, her philosophical belief in the stars, and the conflict that she faces as a character. She sees the world around her as a living painting, and this musical number needs to be a reflection of her fantasy. I will note that this version will have the instrumental from the early demo that was heard at D23 Expo in 2022. I actually do have an audio version of my interpretation, which combines both the demo and the official instrumentals of the song, but I can't release it because of that mouse company being strict with copyright. Anyways, onto the lyrics!
[Verse 1]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the truth’s supposed to set me free, why do I feel so weighted down by it
If I could show the people everything I’ve seen, open their eyes to all the lies then, they would change their minds like did
Cause when I speak, they tell me sit down, but why should I when I found something to believe in
I know where I began, but it’s not where I belong. They say I’m naive but, I know I’m not wrong
[Asha looks up to the wishing star overlooking the kingdom, pulling her closer to the far-off woodlands.]
[Chorus 1]
So I look up at the stars to guide me
And I pray for them to give a sign
If knowing it be could be is what drives me
Then let me bring this dream into life
So I make this wish, to bring something more to all of this
So I make this wish, to have something more for us than this
Tumblr media
[As she vocalizes, she imagines the birds around her with glowing star-like speckles, the speckles having a sketchy quality to them to illustrate her imagination]
Hey-yeah-yeah-yeah
Hey-yeah-yeah-yeah-ah-ah
More than this, oh-ahhh-ahhh-ahhh
[Verse 2]
[Asha walks through the forest, letting out all of her emotions]
Tumblr media
I never knew I needed room to grow
I always did what I was told, and I never said no
Now I got all of this freedom in my bones
But I can’t even let it show, can’t let it overflow
[Asha climbs the wishing star to a large walkable branch above the ocean]
Tumblr media
Cause I got expectations and hesitations on where I should even begin
Always dipping my toes in, but I don’t know if I should sink or swim
I won’t let myself be pointed in any given direction on where to go or what to do
My legs are shaking, but my head’s held high in the way they always taught me to
[Asha imagines a glowing staircase of stars that lead her up to the heavens, beginning to let out her emotions as she runs up the staircase]
[Chorus 2]
So I look up at the stars to guide me
And I pray for them to give a sign
I’m sure there will be challenges worth striving
But I can take them on, one at a time
[Asha sets foot onto the watercolored clouds and gazes at the big, bright wishing star glowing overhead, now closer than she could ever imagine. This climax is inspired by unused concept art for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I make this wish, to bring something more to all of this
So I make this wish, to have something more for us than this
[Here is our ultimate climax! The camera rotates around Asha as she twirls amongst the stars. The stars are shining brighter than they ever have before. Celestial creatures shining with stardust begin to surround her, the stars on the clouds create a bright, symphonic dreamscape.
Hey-yeah-yeah-yeah
Hey-yeah-yeah-yeah-ah-ah
More than this, oh-ahhh-ahhh-ahhh
[Before the outro, we fade back to reality, with Asha on the wishing tree, as she finally makes her wish to the stars above her]
[Outro]
So I make this wish, to have something more for us than this
[The camera quickly pulls back, giving us a huge shot of the sky, the sea, and the Wishing Tree all in frame, as if it were a masterpiece painting.]
Tumblr media
[The song ends with a patient silence, as Asha smiles. The pause is much longer than in canon, at least 10 seconds. Her smile drops as she notices that the star is slowly starting to glow bright, and explode with a light of hope and wonder. Asha shields her eyes as the glow engulfs the kingdom of Rosas, and that is where we meet our fabled star boy! End scene]
So that's This Wish! Hope you've enjoyed my intrepretation of the song, and maybe I'll share a couple more revised versions of the canon songs. Goodnight, Kingdom of Rosas!

I'm noticing more and more things about Wish that irk me so here's another one: in "This Wish," Asha says "when I speak, they tell me sit down," and "I never knew I needed room to grow, I did what I was told when someone told me no." She's basically been told no once, maybe twice, in the movie. She's leading tours through the kingdom at seventeen, for Pete's sake, this kid clearly has a pretty high level of trust and freedom invested in her, and depicting two instances of being rebuffed (first by Magnifico, second by her family) as never having had the ability to speak her mind is a little overdramatic.
Idk, let's bring in a couple of other heroines for contrast. Maybe this will make my point more clear, maybe it'll make it more confusing, you can be the judge of that.
Mulan is portrayed as someone who has been basically screwing up her whole life. We don't see her childhood, either, but we get a sense through the first fifteen or so minutes of the movie, particularly "Bring Honor To Us All," that her relatives don't have super high hopes for her prospects, that her struggles with remembering all the right ways to act aren't new. It's not like everyone around acts for the most part like she's normal and then one or two relatives make a snide comment and she suddenly acts like she's been disappointing them her whole life--it's communicated to us that this is pretty much standard for her.
Or Ariel. It's made pretty clear to us that she's been sneaking off to explore human objects, skipping out on her official princess duties like appearing in concerts with her sisters, for a while. It's a continuing problem for Sebastian and for her father, but she can't help herself, so even though she knows there will be consequences if she's caught, she goes looking at human stuff anyway. It's not as if she goes looking at one shipwreck, everyone gets mad, and she acts like humanity has always been where her heart lies.
If you're going to have a character say something that implies they've been struggling to make their voice heard all their life, to be who they really are, you have to back it up. Mulan is shown as someone who has had consistent problems when she's herself, who tries her hardest to be who other people want her to be, and still fails, through her own words and actions and those of her family. "Help me not to make a fool of me, and to not uproot my family tree" and the notes she puts on her arm show she really is trying, but that she expects to fail because there's precedent for it. Ariel is shown as someone who's being stifled in the fact that she has to sneak away to indulge her greatest interest and in that she literally has a secret trove to put her human objects in. She has a lot of stuff there, and when she's caught, it's treated like a repeat offense, so it's pretty obvious that she's been doing this and being reprimanded for it for a while. Asha, on the other hand, has a job where she's trusted to fill visitors in on Rosas and even try to convince them to stay, and there's no manager or something looking over her work and making sure she's saying or doing all the right things. Her family is one of the least stern Disney families I've ever seen; they seem more or less okay with her just going off and doing mysterious who-knows-what.
Anyway! that's my take. I don't like those couple of lines in "This Wish" because they don't fit with the way other people interact with Asha in general. She's not being repressed super hard in most of the movie so I think treating it as "the time I have something incredibly important to say is the one time nobody listens" would have worked better
kay bye

💫You’re a STAR!💫
⭐️(drumroll) Introducing Star, my humanized version of the adorable little guy from “Wish”! 🥰 When I saw the concept art of his shapeshifting version, and how he was supposed to be a love interest for Asha, I knew I had to create my own version of him!⭐️
🌟So here he is! He reveals this form after the events of the movie, when he realizes he has fallen for Asha. I imagine him still being as energetic, upbeat, and mischievous as his star form (which he can still transform into, btw 😜). Asha is more than a little surprised to see him like this.🌟

💛So anyway, I hope you like him!💛
