Happy Wednesday Fandom :) More of that pining/slow burn in this one. I saw a post that said ‘The greatest things take the longest time.’ That is Chenford in a nutshell. The buildup and reward are so good. This one is fantastic for so many reasons. Also we get rid of the dead weight that is Ashley in this one. The symbolism in this one is very poignant. So let’s get going.

5x05 The Fugitive

A foot chase starts our ship off in this one. Tim takes down one of the suspects with an impressive takedown. Sexy af until he injures himself. Lucy pulls up and is on it immediately for him. Tim is clearly in pain and Lucy is instantly worried. Asking if he’s ok? Tim being Tim brushes it off. Saying it was just the take down. He tweaked his back is all. Then grimaces some more. Activating worried wifey mode to the max. You no longer have a choice in this now Timothy. She has decided you are going to the hospital and that is that sir. This is not up for debate. At all. Weird place or not you are her person and she will make sure you are taken care of. That’s instinctual.

This next scene is the epitome of stubborn husband and exasperated wife. Tim comes gimping into the hospital. Lucy is hot on his trail worry pouring out of her. Nolan starts to update Tim on the fugitive loose in the hospital. Lucy cuts John off and says he’s not there as a supervisor. Damn girl you just take the lead for your man.

Idk what’s more telling to those around them. That Lucy is in wifey mode taking over for Tim. Or That Tim starts to fight her then gives in. Either way acting married af right now. Or as I saw in some tags we could call this scene ‘Where wives don’t believe their husbands.’ LOL From the minute he started hurting worried wife was activated.

She is not giving up till you are seen Tim. She is so exasperated with him when he says ‘Ok I’m not fine.’ Like yeah it’s what I’ve been telling you this entire time you stubborn ox of a man haha She's so gentle in helping him sit in that second gif though. Mad he won't listen but soft when he needs her. Mixture of extremely worried and infuriated with him.

Lucy is doing her search for the fugitive when she runs into Tim’s room. Awkward central. She wasn’t expecting Ashley. haha Tells them she's just looking for bad guys...Tim doesn’t let her leave yet asking how the search is going? Asking If Nolan is leaving a cop on every floor? Lucy’s incredulous look and sass reply are the best. ‘Yes we’ve been cops for more than ten seconds.’ Lucy stays long enough to be present for the doctor. He explains it's an old injury flaring up.

It's from when he was shot few years back. Ashley's reaction to a bullet makes me roll my eyes. He’s a cop those tend to be apart of the deal….The doctor telling him the injury from a few years ago is a problem now. There was a fragment that was too complicated to move at the time. So they left it there. Tim tries to relax Ashley and say he was ‘Just shot’ not a big deal. Trying to downplay it. Lucy bragging she saved his life on day one. It was a big deal heh I mean it really was... His hot shot in action saved his life.

Tim ignores her comment and let's the doctor finish. He says the fragment has traveled and is now closer to his spinal column. It’s pressing on a nerve now. So they need to do surgery to remove it. Tim says 'Ok…when?' Wifey jumps in not Ashley and asks ‘Hold on, what are the risks?’ The doctor must’ve thought Ashley was Tim’s sister and Lucy was the spouse at this point. He has to. The way Lucy is acting is that of a worried wife. Asking questions and not just sitting there as the doctor speaks.

The doctor answers Lucy’s question by saying ‘They’re talking about the spine so it’s risky..’ The silent communication above oh my word. He doesn’t look to Ashley for comfort when the doc says this. No no. He looks to his person for it. The way he flits his eyes over to her. The writing was on the wall for Ashley in this one in so many ways. Let’s not forget his GF is standing right next to him as he does this.

Literally right there as they have this mini silent convo with his soulmate. How this woman wasn’t consistently threatened by Lucy I’ll never understand. When his panic and worry start to pile up who does he look to? His girl. Such a short moment with so much meaning attached to it. They’ve been each other’s safe place and harbor for a long time.

So naturally he would look to Lucy not his GF in this moment. Ashley is so far past her expiration date at this point she's starting to smell. Gah their chemistry is out of the world good. This moment above a reflection of that. Also Lucy’s reaction to the doctor saying it’s risky. *heart clutch*

Tim opts to do the surgery even though it’s risky. It’s better than doing nothing. He says it could be laparoscopic and he’ll be home by dinner. Look at Lucy’s panic in that first gif. She was not done with grilling that doctor. Nor was she done talking to Tim about this. But sadly she's not his SO and can't have more input. If she was his wife that doctor would’ve spent little longer in that room. You can tell how antsy and worried she is.

Looking at Tim with that same amount of worry. Lucy touches her tattoo. Her go to when she’s super stressed and overwhelmed. Her heart is hurting she can’t be the one comforting him. Can't be the one grilling the doctor some more and having a say in this. It’s killing her. Since she can’t do anything more she opts to leave. Also Ashley comforting Tim is not something she wants to see anyway. It’s hurting her to watch tbh.

So Lucy gets awkward and says she’s gonna get back to the search. Being in the room isn't something she can stand at this point. So she takes off back where she came from. Where do Tim’s eyes go? Not to Ashley. To Lucy who just left the room. We all know he’s not with Ashley because he loves her.

It’s just comfortable and safe because he can’t be with Lucy. Breaks my damn heart. All his feelings were showing in this scene. 100% of them towards Lucy in this moment. Look at that man above. His heart just walked out of the room and it shows. He wanted her to stay but there wasn’t a reason for her to. You’re so in love with her Timothy. It's painfully obvious at this point.

Lucy comes to see Grey after he collapsed in front of her. He got food poisoning from breakfast place they went to. Ashley did him a solid by having him not eat bread I guess...Lucy is so cute when she comes in saying it’s like a sleepover LOL Never change Lucy Chen never change. This makes me laugh so very much. First I wanna say I love Grey trusting her enough to run the station. That’s amazing.

Second it's hilarious because they both need her to get a move on. With Smitty in charge god only knows what’s happening without them. When she arrives he’s already given a friend day off….Lucy asks what he’s doing? Tells her 'When you’re in charge you let your friends go home early.' OMG lol Lucy is panicked and says but we’re short today…Reminding him they’re understaffed due to the units on the hospital. Smh. This is why they sent her back...

We return to Ashley back in his room. Talking about how Tim could retire if he wanted. Be on disability/pension if this surgery keeps him from working. Move out of LA. It’s insane to me she would even suggest this. But not surprising. The thing I didn’t like about Ashley was her constantly molding Tim into her version. Once again vapid is the perfect description for Ashley.

Not having him strive to be a better person like Lucy does. Because she is blah and doesn’t challenge him. Just wanted her version of him. Where Lucy challenges him and makes him want to be better. Loves him for who he is. Ashley just keeps trying to shove Tim into a box. Her box of who she thinks he should be like. Not loving him for who he is.

Lucy loves every part of this man. Warts and all and vice versa. Trying to take away being a cop to be a beach bum? Outside of LA? She doesn’t know the man lying next to her at all. Why you ask? Oh you know just those glaring communication issues they've had since day one. This goes all the way back to 4x10 with Kojo. It's not gotten any better.

Because of this lack of communication she’s only gotten surface level Tim. The Tim that doesn’t want to rock the boat. So he is just going with it. Better than making waves. D brought up an excellent point in 4x21 in her comments. About him not fighting her because of his PTSD with Isabel. Her saying he was too rigid. Tim is over correcting now where he’s not even himself at this point. Possibly agreeing to this ‘Life plan’ of hers. Just going through the motions because he has to.

He doesn’t want to be alone and he can’t be with Lucy. It’s insanely heartbreaking when you break it down like this. Tim is losing who he is in this relationship. Just to please a person he doesn’t even love. To quell anxieties his ex-wife thrust upon him. We see him hesitate because it’s a life he doesn’t really want. Makes me mad as I write this. Tim deserves so much better.

Tim goes to stretch his legs while he still can. He sees the fugitive and tries to stop him. Oh my Timothy why would you do this being so hurt? Because he's a lawman first and foremost that's why. Not that Ashley get’s that....I wanna cry with how much pain he’s in. Gah Eric killing me softly. We see his bravado disappear in an instant. Tim then thinks of the two most important women in his life. His sister and his girl. No no not bloody Ashley. Lucy. Sends Ashley to call his sister.

When Grey makes it over he tells him not to tell Lucy. Knowing she would drop EVERYTHING to be by his side. Tim putting her first even when he's in danger himself. Does he not see what a husband move this is? I’m sure Wade does. Minute Ashley is gone he tells him not to tell Lucy. Fierce protector reporting for duty even when he’s hurting. If Lucy saw him grimacing like he is she would lose her damn mind. He knows this and decides to keep her out of the loop because of it.

Lucy sees a bunch of cops leaving and is panicking. They say Smitty is letting them leave early. Harper comes up and Lucy asks for her help. Nyla knowing Lucy is a BAMF saying all she has to do is say different. I adore the way Harper builds her up in this moment. Filling in those gaps still when Tim can’t. It’s amazing. Letting her know she has their respect.

With everything she’s been through and done for others. No way these cops wouldn’t have her back if she asked for it. Lucy tells them what’s going on. How spread thin they are and she needs them. Jan nods and says ‘You got it Chen.’ Love this for her. Smitty comes up and ask if she’s in charge? She says yeah I guess. He looks so relieved and hands the reins over HA

Here comes the scene where I wanna drop kick Ashley into a volcano. I think I’ve been much harsher on Chris than I have her so far. But this is where that changes. Tim is just getting out of surgery. JUST. What does she do? Project her crap onto Tim. Then break up with him for it. Girl, you knew he was a cop from the damn jump. For MONTHS. You knew this. Wasn’t a secret he kept from you. Yet you decide to condemn him for it cause of an injury he had years ago. This has to be one of the most incredibly selfish things I’ve ever seen. That line from 5x08 ‘You deserve someone who’s worth the effort.’ Clearly to Ashley, Tim wasn’t worth the effort.

Breaks my heart for Tim. Leaving him alone post surgery. I hate her for this. I really do. When Lucy would’ve lost her damn mind even knowing about this. The only way she would change her mind is if he retired. Cool so you didn’t get what you wanted so you bail on him? Awesome. Real classy of you. This was just all their crappy communication, incompatibility and just being so wrong for each other coming to a head. At the absolute worst time for Tim. The way he says 'I just got out of surgery...' Breaks my heart. Let me at her Tim. I'm Italian we're scrappy.

I also just wanna hug him so very much. What a shitty thing to do. It’s a rough ride to 5x08. This one just hurts to watch. But good riddance to bad rubbish as they say. Tim was only in that relationship cause it was safe. To fill the hole in his heart Lucy left. And she didn’t even do that good of a job... She did him a favor really. The insane amount of symbolism between Lucy and Ashley in this ep is glaring. When it’s the right person this stuff doesn’t matter. She asks him if she can get him anything? No. Get the hell out. You aren’t fit to breathe the same air as him let alone be in his presence anymore. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. You won’t be missed.

We return to Lucy at Grey’s desk looking exhausted as hell. He comes in to relieve her. He asks how did it go? She lies and says it was great…. Wade laughs and says ‘It was great?’ He tells her he spoke with the communication supervisor. That she did a masterful job of managing calls with half the normal staff. Lucy thanks him but says she is more than ready to hand it back to him.

She asks about Tim’s laparoscopic? Grey sighs and tells her the news. It’s the way he softly delivers it. Knowing how sick with worry she’s going to be. The man knew. We see the absolute panic on her face. She goes from tired to extremely alert and worried af. That man is the important person in her life. She doesn’t have to blink before she’s at the hospital for him.

Let’s talk about this panicked absolutely panicked walk to his room. How she’s desperately searching for him once she arrives. The way she rubs her tattoo when she reaches it. Gah it’s so good. I love Melissa doing that small touch with her tattoo anytime she is worried/stressed. It’s like she can’t breathe until her eyes are on him. That she won't relax until she can see that he’s safe and ok.

The shaky way she approaches his bed. Bracing herself for the worst since she knows NOTHING about his surgery. Asking him so softly if he’s ok? Getting angry asking 'Why no one told her in the first place?' Tim is smiling because he’s just so damn happy she cares about him. That’s she’s here. He tells her everything went ok. He'll make a full recovery. That he told everyone to keep her in the dark. She goes from worried wifey to scolding LOL

Tim’s answer is so damn revealing. Lucy is picking up on the feelings he’s just laying out for her. Telling her he didn’t want her to worry. Lucy putting the pieces together in her reply. Tim couldn’t be more obvious in his affection for her in this moment. Truly think Lucy was catching onto his feelings right here. It’s the soft way she repeats it back with a very affectionate smile on her face. She loves this man so much. It's written all over her face.

They’re both so sweet and loud in their feelings in this moment. This is such married behavior it’s unreal. He could’ve used Lucy in this whole situation. But once again puts her above his own needs. Because Tim Bradford. Literally screaming his feelings at her in this moment. Tim is realizing this as she parrots back what he did. Goes back on the defensive saying to slow her roll LOL

That he misspoke he was really talking about the station. Uh huh. Sure babe that’s what you’re talking about…Continuing on to say he didn’t want to distract her with worrying about him. So she could properly take over from Smitty. Lucy’s BS detector is out and it’s going off like crazy. He knows she would’ve let the station burn to be with him. To have someone by his side. Instead of calling him out on it further she just does a knowing ‘Mmm-hmm.’

He then goes into proud hubby mode. Look at this man. Like I said in 5x03 he looks at her like she’s hung the moon and stars. Does that by saying he heard she saved the day. Lucy decides to banter back at him. Instead of just taking his praise. Being sassy af in her reply instead of just thanking him. I love this because it shows the comfortability that is still there.

Telling him it wasn't that hard. Pretending she wasn't phased at all by this daunting task. Tacking on she doesn't know why he's always complaining LOL He just complimented her and she knows he means it. So instead of shying away from it she engages in flirty banter with her person. Tim catching onto her game joins in saying 'Really? Just smooth sailing?' They easily fall back into their natural banter here.

Lucy then cracks with a big smile for him. Saying ‘No…it was awful!’ Haha The comfortable solace of their banter coming to life in this moment. It makes my heart so happy after the last few eps. Lucy feels their flow returning. So she decides to rant about her day. Saying to him 'How can so many things go wrong in one day?' ha

Tim returning fire with a sassy reply of his own. Shooting back it wasn’t even a particularly bad day. The flirty body language from Lucy my god. Be more telling my goodness. Does my heart good them bantering and bickering. It's so nice to see after the heaviness they've been carrying around. They both had horrid days. Lucy with the shift from hell. Tim with almost being paralyzed and having emergency surgery.

You wouldn’t know that from watching them banter in this scene. They haven’t had this kind of back and forth in forever. We haven’t seen them this light in weeks. Haven’t see them be themselves at all since 5x01. Look at these two. They’re practically glowing from this sassy banter exchange. Just the pick me up they both needed.

Lucy asks where’s Ashley? Tim stutters around and says he sent her home. She was ‘exhausted.’ Ugh my heart. He’s too hurt to tell her what happened. She’s worried enough about him as is. He won’t add to it. His default gear putting her first. Lucy says ‘Ok.’ believing his lie. She goes to sit down because if she isn’t going to be here Lucy sure as hell is. We talked about symbolism for this ep at the very beginning. This is that in a nutshell.

Lucy filling the seat next to his bed that Ashley has vacated. Not that she is aware of that at this point but Tim is. Lucy makes the choice to stay with him. It means more to Tim in this moment than she’ll ever know. Her automatic reaction is to stay so he doesn’t have to be alone post surgery. Knowing he would like the company even if he doesn’t ask for to. She just knows him that well. This moment means so much to Tim.

He is very gun shy from Ashley legit just abandoning him. He questions why she’s sitting down. The shock is all over his face when she originally takes that seat. Lucy’s answer is wonderful and obvious to her. 'I’m keeping you company.' Thinking what else would I be doing after rushing to come see you? I also think she just wants to keep an eye on him. Make sure he’s really ok.

She is putting him first in this moment. Just like she always has. Always will. Tim tells her she doesn’t have to. Then Lucy does a terrible job of hiding her own feelings. Giving him heart eyes galore replying ‘I know.’ Basically saying ‘I know but I love you.’ No where else she’d rather be. It’s why his smile Is so damn soft for her. She doesn’t have to stay. She WANTS to be with him. Keep him company while he recovers from something so awful.

She is choosing him in this moment and he knows it. It’s written all over his handsome face. He is so grateful to her in this moment. Her presence being a salve to his emotional and physical wounds. Gah I love this episode so very much. Just another ep showing how Lucy is very much his person and Ashley was never close to that. Not in million years. Such a good one after low content drought. Sure it was intentional by the writers to starve us a bit then deliver this gem of ep ❤️

Side notes- non chenford

Love learning about Angela’s brother’s. Also that final scene with her mom makes me cry every time. It’s my own issues but I’m jealous. Angela deserves that apology. Yeah she’s a bad ass but even a bad ass still needs their mom. The way her mom owns up to it and apologizes. My heart. It makes me sad cause I’ll never get that so it gets me right in the feels. But so glad she got it.

I've seen several months ago, that some blog( wchich name i unfortunatly don't remember rn) posted their thoughts about this exact scene from RGU third episode:

and captioned that it probably have some double meaning.So i did a little research on it and it happens to actualy have some!

My first thought was focusing around the parallel that are card games, especialy charakteristic joker card that Anthy took from Chu-chu , and i rememberd that i saw a video essay talking about similar symbolic in episode two, when Student Council talks about End of the World symultaniusly plaing the card game, where also appearce joker card even though it technicly not suppouse to be used in this game .I'm linking the video untherneath so you can get the meaning of it, explained way more percisely than i could ( game part starts around four minutes in).

In a nutshell, joker symbolize the unfair way that Touga plans to defeat Utena, that way being to put her in a feminine role, and make her belive that he is her prince who she should subbmit to, which plan is taking time through almost entire first arc.

And as one of key parts to achive that, Touga uses the great ball hosted by Student Council and (especialy vivid symbol of feminine social role) the dress that he gave Utena .It's a first time that we ever see her in a dress, yet the ballroom scene pretty closely establishes power dynamics present through the rest of the first arc.

Coming back to the topic i think that the key to understand meaning of ,,joker scene" in epiode 3 is the timing.Anthy takes the joker card, and barely few minutes later we hear door bell, and dresses for the great ball arives.The joker card is an omen and signal that Touga putted his plan into action, and disclose that dresses are important part of it.

A deep analysis on Pantalone

Since his first appearence on genshin on Winter's night Lazzo, Pantalone has become an obsession of mine, which not only made me look further on some Commedia Dell'arte scripts, but also sucked me into a whirlwind of theories regarding the possibilities for what part his character will play in the game.

I'm warning you, this post will be big, but also written in a hurry. There is a chance nothing will make sense, but there's also a chance that I'm not being as crazy as I think I am. After all, I guessed right the first time, when I said here that Dottore and Pantalone could be partners, and it ended up being true.

So fellas, specially Pantalone nation, enjoy this dose of hyperfocus.

The Pantalone archetype in Commedia Dell'arte:

Let's start with a simple question; what is a Pantalone?

I know this question may sound strange at first, but we have to keep in mind that the characters in the original commedia had their main comedic features making their way to be transformed into classic archetypes that still are present in other characters way more famous to us. We may know a lot of Pantalones in fiction, even if we never thought about this connection before! Let me show you some of them:

The "Pantalone archetype", as you can see, is in a nutshell "old men that love money". However, there is often a very important factor that must be considered when identifying them among comical rich characters; they often have a past in poverty, or at least weren't always as rich as they are now, and that is the cause of paranoid and grumpy behaviour. Another common trope for them (nowadays) is their hidden feelings, commonly having one or more family members that they love more than their wealth. That explains why Mr. Burns is the only one up there that doesn't match that new criteria, despite being obviously a Pantalone archetype from head to toe.

There is a reason for that. When we hear a joke, would you find it funny if you couldn't understand it?

Pantalone was created to mock the richer classes at the time (and it's important to remember, the era was marked by the bourgeoisie starting to get a sit among the higher classes.) but at the same time, he was created to represent Venice. We have a double joke here: in his name, and in his personality. The joke in his name is because the animal that represents Venice is the lion, so, to represent it, he was suppose to ''put/plant the lion''(pianta leone in italian) in the places he went to, being it other cities or colonies. Contracting this, we have ''Pantalone'', at the same time that it means Pants. The main joke of his personality is that although he is very rich, he lives almost miserably. It doesn't seem to be a popular portrayal that he was part of a noble family or always rich; he was innitially a merchant, and he is a symbol of the self-made man. That past in poverty is what gives context to why he is so stingy and obsessed with his money. And people loved it. Well, we still do. In fact, the most famous version of his portrayal is not focused on how powerful or cunning he can be, but in this pathetic and grumpy man that could be having a wonderful life, instead, he is too concerned about spending a single penny, and ends up being miserable. All to keep his status as rich. This is funny because we can still understand it, we still know very well what they were mocking.

That is why Pantalone is one of the strongest characters in the commedia. This exact stereotypical behaviour ended up becoming timeless.

More than that, it slowly became more and more a famous archetype to create characters that people end up sympathizing a lot with once they see their pasts. And why that? Time passes, and now we have families being middle class; not rich, but not miserably poor. The picture changes a bit: Pantalone became less a figure to represent rich people being cruel, and more a figure that can be understood; that is ''just like us'', a figure that still have a good heart deep down. The message being: "anyone can become a Pantalone one day, but it can change". (if they are properly traumatized into being gentle to others, like our man Ebenezer Scrooge).

Or even, a person that got blinded by power. And nothing good happens when a person that learned to hate the world and it's people gets power. They learned that the powerful ones can do as they please with vulnerable people like them, and what is sweeter for the oppressed than being the oppressor?

With all that in mind, let's continue.

The Pale Flame Set:

Genshin really went hard with the "rich man with a tragic past" trope for him.

So, we have here a man that feels so forgotten by the divine, so miserable and powerless, that he started to feel enraged at the gods and ready to declare war. It's important to notice since now: It's not about the money for him, it's about the power that comes with it. Because money is a power that common humans should control, not the gods. The gods don't need it, humans need. He needs it. In the end, it's more about him than the rest, I'll talk more about it later.

But what more do we know about him?

To start, many things we can discover about him in game shows that he is not stingy like the more classic versions of Pantalone. For example, the Goth Grand Hotel was entirely reserved by the fatui delegation. When we ask Goth about it, he says that Pantalone was so generous in his offer that he had no choice but to comply with the demand. This shows that he has no trouble using mora to get what he wants if words aren't enough. To me, this is just a good example of someone shamelessly using his power.

We see a similar indication of his "loose" fist on money when in Winter's Night Lazzo, he finds the idea of mourning for half a day absurd. Funny, even. In English, this is not very noticiable, but in Chinese, he sounds very passive-aggressive. He says that Pulcinella's values are ''more twisted than those of a banker like him'', and by that, unapologetically recognizing himself as a twisted person, considering that, right before, he was saying people say that the Northland Bank's true currencies are blood and tears (and cries of loss/wailing, in chinese). We haven't seen many harbingers speaking like this yet; this openly (or implicitly) sadistic.

Ok, Scaramouche was an asshole, Signora was patronizing, and Dottore is simply the cruelest character in the game yet, but I'm not talking about simply being cruel. There are types of cruelty. Signora never bragged about being cruel, neither was she sadistic. She acted violent with Venti for personal reasons, and was very diplomatic with the other archons. Dottore, too, acted very reasonable and calm in Sumeru, and even in the Zandik notes, he doesn't seem to enjoy the suffering of his patients and test subjects, it's just a natural part of the science for him. Scaramouche is the most similar one in that regard, but that speaks volumes by itself. He, too, was a very frustrated abused person wanting to feel like the abuser.

But there's more to it. In Liyue, when we ask Andrei about the Northland Bank, he says that the economy in Snezhnaya "have the brilliance and foresight of Master Pantalone to thank". Pantalone is regarded as a bold mind in economy, and therefore dangerous in many occasions. To start, we have Tartaglia's voice-over indicating his genius:

"Oh, now that guy has a head full of grandiose plans fueled by raw ambition. I don't understand a word he says once he starts talking about his theories… Eh, but as long as he keeps our cash reserves stocked up, I'm not complaining."

Then, we have Uncle tian tellilng us in Yelan's mission:

(...)"However, his "wealth" is not a mere question of how much Mora he has to his name. He has a very unique understanding of wealth… And what he's planning may very well shake the world to its core."

And finally, Scaramouche's voice-over cementing the point being built:

"Oh, the ninth-ranked guy. He's obsessed with the idea of "fair exchange," to the point of wanting to overthrow the natural imbalance between gods and humans. But, I guess it's just how ordinary mortals are like — it's easy for them to come up with pointless delusions. Honestly, it's nothing worth writing home about, just like how there's also nothing impressive about his abilities or choice of partner. Hmph. Anyone who chooses to work closely with The Doctor is sure to meet a nasty end."

Now, we can definitely conclude two things with all that people say about him.

He is very revolutionary and many are already aware that what he is planning will be groundbreaking.

He is ambitious enough to ally himself with a person openly known as destructive and abusive by the other harbingers themselves.

That leads us to the question…

What part will he possibly play in Genshin?

Let's put everything together: We have a character here that has a tragic past, is filthy rich, has revolutionary plans for the future, and apparently is…a bit fragile for a harbinger. What potentials does he have? What can be done with him?

Well, first, I think he will be a parallel to Ningguang.

By that, I'm not stating that I think he is from Liyue. It must seem very obvious for many, but let's not forget that nothing in game confirmed his nationality. Ever. We have to remember that many people were also super sure that Scaramouche would be electro because of ''what the game showed'', but in reality we never saw him using electro powers, we just assumed.

But by saying he will be a Parallel to Ningguang, I'm saying that both were very poor people that are now Teyvat's richest individuals. But while one managed to wake a vision solely by the force of ambition, the other still wasn't graced with one, even if his ambition is as big as (if not bigger than) Ningguang's. Not only that, their views on mora and wealth are very different; while Ningguang is content with things as they are now, Pantalone isn't.

Let's take a look on Wriothesley's signature weapon, the Cashflow supervision:

"We'll start by creating a new currency to replace the dependence on mora"

Hm...

"Nor shall the wealth of the Gods descend, to rescue the dignity of the poor from the feet of the rich."

I don't know about you guys, but I admit that when I first read Pantalone's pale flame piece I thought he was lowkey a radical communist acting as a capitalist(which I found neat, personally), but the Cashflow Supervision opened my eyes. Come on, I know it's not confirmed that the person speaking is Pantalone, but just look at it. He even uses the same analogy of arteries and blood!

Let's think about what is being said here.

He is planning on making a new currency, one that will wipe mora away from the picture. A good plan, if you ask me. And, do you remember? Zhongli told us once, in the end of the Liyue arc:

This is the best opportunity Pantalone could ask for. As the Golden House ceases operation, the Northland bank can act. And I believe this is the reason Pantalone was trying to interfere with Liyuean politics in the first place, with Liyue being the economic capital of Teyvat, of course it's important to have someone that will be more open to agree with his ideas in charge, even if it was treated as a secondary matter to him.

But aside from that, that final sentence in Cashflow supervision really sticks to me. Again this sort of gleeful enjoyment with the power he will have. It becomes obvious that his main motivations behind the ''fair exchange'' between gods and humans isn't to make things better for anyone particularly. The rich will still be rich and the poor will still be poor. What he craves is to feel like a god in the end. To have the power to give and take, to be both feared and praised. And then deny the ones in need, just like he felt the gods denied him in the past.

Now, returning to the Pantalone archetype.

There are two routes for villains like that: 1, they simply die. 2, they change their worldviews in a very traumatic event.

I think Pantalone will die... I don't know, it's a hunch. I sure hope he doesn't, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. It's something in how Scaramouche hints he will have a nasty end too, or his dead anime mom hairstyle(kind of), or his white strands of hair... Or better, I think that he would be a good character to kill. Speaking about the narrative. He could die trying to bargain, or he could die while spitting the hardest truths possible to the traveler, maybe even making them reflect about the gods, the Archons, or what the Fatui want after all. I mean...we have now just 2 nations left, and the traveler didn't question anything about the harbingers' motivations?! Oh, please. Or maybe, if not the traveler, at least make the players symphatize with him. He is a very tragic character when you think about it.

If he lives, I think he is literally the best harbinger to make redeemable without it sounding ridiculous. Think about it: how many times a capitalistic villain was actually an anti-villain? I'll show you a very good example. Tumblr's lord and saviour himself:

Yes.

Pantalone is the best character in genshin to suffer a deep realization of his own morals in the best case scenario. But if not, he can flee or die trying to defend himself in the most tragic way, screaming. Maybe cry, plead, remember memories of himself in the past, and in the game? I'm sure some people will feel bad for him if there's a cutscene like this, as we defeat him, even if the final conclusion will be ''well, he deserved it''.

With all that said, I will conclude all this by saying that it's amazing how I love this character when he didn't even show up in the game yet. He has so much potential that I honestly feel that he can't fail, no matter the narrative they choose. It's already impossible. If he ends up being pathetic in the game? I'll love it. If he ends up being a complete maniac? I'll love it too. What if he is cold and calculating? Also fits and I'll like it! What about if he lives or dies? I'm all in, I will want to see it. The only way he can fail in the narrative is by dying too fast like Signora, I mean, before we can properly know more about him in the game(not only through weapons or artifact sets), but even so, Signora's death is the reason we got the Winter's Night Lazzo in the first place. Plus, I don't think Hoyoverse would repeat the same event twice, specially when they are improving the story-telling method significantly.

So think of any possibility for him, seriously, and tell me, honestly, wouldn't it be interesting?

People keep commenting on my post about orifices and apparently not everyone knows about Turnabout Endoscopy?? The famous hidden bonus case between JFA and T&T?

People are under the impression I meant "office" and accidentally typed "orifice."

At the very beginning of Farewell, My Turnabout if you pick up a Nickel Samurai trading card (it's very well-hidden) and then present it to Edgeworth at the very end of the game (instead of Franziska's whip) it eventually triggers an after credits scene where Edgeworth invites Phoenix to dinner so he can "educate" him on proper Samurai media. Phoenix makes a snarky comment to himself but agrees bc it's Edgeworth.

That triggers the secret case, Turnabout Endoscopy.

In a nutshell, someone attacks Edgeworth and Edgeworth ends up in the hospital and you (as Phoenix) need to collect evidence from Edgeworth's small intestine via interesting medical procedures. You have to accuse the attacker of assaulting Edgeworth, and you have to present the evidence he stored up in Edgeworth.

While you're digging around, you see the inside of Edgeworth is like a mini prosecutors office. They used the same design from RFTA but there's some shiny effects over it bc it kinda feels like a dream sequence I guess.

The whole thing is like. Symbolic of how Edgeworth has internalized law and how the pursuit of being a perfect prosecutor has affected him so thoroughly.

And then you go to court for one day:

There's a lot of "Phoenix was in Edgeworth's butt jokes."

And Shu Takumi even talked about it in an interview:

It's a short case, but it's really good. 100/10.

been thinking about marika and radagon a lot lately (well actually been thinking about them for years but especially latey) and i've gone through a lot of speculations/theories. while i'm not going to put my own opinion regarding this matter here, i do want to make a post regarding some of the evidence that i think is crucial to understand them. (initially posted as a thread on twitter!)

1. there was no explicit mention of radagon during the age of plenty, indicating either he was a no one, or he didn't exist at all by then, depending on whether you think he and marika was separate beings or they were one being since the beginning. back then, crucible and erdtree still possessed their divine power, especially the crucible, so i think it is the only time period that can maintain the rebis (combination of polar opposites) to be harmonious.

As a result, it is possible that marika didn't need radagon at all, cuz her thoughts and beliefs were harmonious back then. Even if radagon already existed as marika's alter ego, marika didn't need him to do anything.

2. the description of radagon only appeared after the age of plenty had ended, during which the incantation symbol changed from the early crucible/erdtree to the abstract erdtree. the power of crucible slowly faded, so the rebis was not in harmony anymore, this was the time that radagon first appeared in the narrative.

apparently, this is related to whatever happened at the end of age of the plenty. i've seen theories about first burning of the erdtree, and i personally think this is the time destined death was plucked out of the elden ring, due to the fact that elden ring in godfrey's time was supposed to look like this (found both in front of godfrey's monument and leyndell). anyway this is all speculation, we need dlc to support any of this, but something definitely had happened that time, causing radagon to come out of nowhere.

actually i think point 1 and 2 should be one point but nvm my brain is a mess...😭 in a nutshell, radagon wasn't in the narrative (either didn't exist or was no one or marika didn't need him) until the erdtree (and crucible)'s divine power slowly faded.

3. now comes the confusing & fun part: elden ring, erdtree and golden order are concepts that sounds really similar but actually they are very different. i don't want to go in length cuz it's very complicated to explain, but essentially marika is much more associated with erdtree, while radagon is much more associated with golden order, making them very different. In other words, marika is more associated with nature, while radagon with law enforcement, civilization...abstract things created by people.

4. one thing i'd like to point out, which i haven't seen anyone talked about it it's crazy???, is the gestures "inner order" and "outer order".

you receive the latter one from melina, after she repeats to you marika's words in minor erdtree church, in which "marika" talked about "her" intention to search the gold order. i used "" because radagon might be the one who actually said it!? marika never call people "my comrades", it's more fitting for radagon to do so. besides, we can find golden order seal just near by and radagon is the one whose name appeared in description about golden order incantations all the time. and then we receive the gesture "inner order" from Devin, who shared one soul with his brother, but they had separate bodies and minds.

i think it's a very subtle implication telling us how did marika and radagon work before the shattering. but of course, this is not a direct piece of evidence saying thay marika and radagon had separate bodies before, i just think this evidence should be considered when talking about marika and radagon.

finally (omg it's the longest post i've made and i wasn't making any sense but anyway), i want to stress that no matter they were one being from the start, or they were glued together by the greater will, or radagon was somehow produced(?) by marika after she became the embodiment of elden ring or after she plucked destined death, currently (ok that's weird to say since they are both dead lol) marika and radagon DOES NOT share their opinions and decisions.

their intentions was opposite to each other, to me this means they should not be regarded as the same. Even if they have shared memories & feelings, which there's no way to know, in the end they didn't agree with each other and fought for their control over the situation. no matter what they were like before, this fact doesn't change.

AFO was prob a victim as some point with bad things happening, but has so far very willingly and consciously chosen to be terrible and victimize others in return. He makes an active choice to be evil and do evil things.

Yes, he does. And so does Tomura, but we have a clearer background on him and every excuse is okay for his character.

I’ve honestly gone into way more detail with my thoughts on why he’s coined himself “The Symbol of Evil” when he was actually arguing against it and not accepting Yoichi calling him as such back in the day. You’ll have to search that up on my tumblr.

But in a nutshell: I think something happened that caused AFO to decide to embrace the title of evil. He took up the role and with gusto. Especially applying comic book villains to himself…even though he was quick to admonish Yoichi for trying to compare their world to a comic book.

However, we have other villains that have had terrible things happen to them and end up being a son of a bitch. Most notable is Darth Vader. I cover this in the same post I mentioned above. Vader did terrible things, consciously, after the terrible things happened to him. It was far easier for him to embrace the Darkside and accept that he’s just a “bad guy” than have to face the reality of what he’d done. This dude was complicit in the destruction of an entire, populated planet. And also knew about the slaving the Empire enforced…even though he grew up as a slave. But we still had a backstory and it caused us to relate, in some way, to what happened to him. It never EXCUSED his actions, but it gave us a clearer picture on why someone would turn down the path of evil. It made his character far far more interesting and far far more sad. Of course, Vader was redeemed in the end, but Lucas stated he still had to die because his sins were worthy of death. I don’t believe AFO is going to be redeemed, but I do believe we’ll have a better understanding of why he became the Big Bad in the first place. And, yes, he’ll have to die because of his sins too.

Honestly, the brothers’ backstory isn’t just for those that are interested in that aspect, but also for those that are interested in the upheaval the dawn of Quirks caused. We get some information about this here and there, but to actually see it and how it impacts these two brothers would be very very informative!

Wardrobe & Styling: Risika PT1

As always, I’ll keep using original names if I’m talking specifically about the original iteration and in quotations and stuff, but I’ll be referring to everyone by their new names in all other situations.

Welp, I guess I'm officially back! In a nutshell, work got really busy and I got distracted by a few other hyperfixations (and I also got a bit self conscious now that I realize this blog actually kind of has an audience). I was going to do a big post explaining what I’ve been up to, but I it was taking too long and I didn’t feel like it, so I guess I’m going to just jump right back in!

I recently started watching a lot of youtube videos about fashion and costuming in movies and tv shows, so I thought it might be cool to do a short series about how I’d dress these characters for my version of the story. Starting, of course, with our girl Risika!

Canon outfits

We don’t get a lot of detailed clothing/outfit descriptions in general, but here’s what we have for her:

Chapter 1 (Now) - Black jeans and a black t-shirt

She doesn’t always wear black, but that was the color of her mood that day.

She also says in this chapter that she wears a silver ring set with a garnet stone

Chapter 15 (1704) - Mens clothes and tangled, unkempt hair

Wearing long skirts was getting too cumbersome for her

Chapter 18 (Now) - Black tank top → cropped body hugging gold tank top with black jeans

Generally keeps her hair its natural old gold color until the end when she adds black stripes to it.

Going off of just this, it seems like Risika is pretty utilitarian when it comes to clothing choices. Very simple, no frills (literally), mostly/exclusively black (contrary to her own narration)…up until when she’s dressing for her fight with Aubrey.

I take this to symbolize Risika’s character journey from being depressed, antisocial, and wanting to hide away from the vampire world (or at least pass through it unnoticed) to embracing her predatory nature and being comfortable with being seen and making her mark as a part of vampire society.

My Version

I want to stay along these same lines as the canon, but add some more nuance and details.

Generally, Roksana favors earth tones and natural materials (to show how attached she is to nature and humanity). She doesn't like things clinging to her too much but she also doesn't like things that are so baggy or flowy that they get in the way (to show her yearning for freedom).

She hates button-ups (too stiff and formal); she likes dresses and skirts in theory, but doesn't often reach for them on a regular day.

For the most part, she likes to keep things simple for her main apparel pieces—solid colors, basic shapes. Shoes and accessories is where she likes to have more ornamentation.

She tends to keep her accessorizing to a minimum because she likes to be able to move unencumbered. She hates carrying bags or wearing hats but she has a pretty extensive shoe repertoire. Her shoes are practical but well-crafted and even ornate.

When it comes to jewelry, gold is her preferred metal. She's not super into precious stones or pearls. She likes wooden or clay beads and semi-precious stones like jasper, jade, or lapis lazuli.

These days, she doesn't wear much makeup, but during time periods where heavy makeup was a thing, she'd wear it in order to blend in.

She typically styles her hair in whatever is fashionable at the time, but prefers to wear it down in its naturally curly/wavy state.

She's more interested in how things feel as opposed to how they look, so comfort, mobility, breathability, and texture are very important to her. She doesn't like feeling trapped.

I really want her wardrobe to speak to her innate longing for freedom and her resilience as well as her connection to the past. I also thought it might be interesting to hint at a secret craving for luxury (a contrast to the idealized image she has of her saintly brother in order to make her feel even more guilty and self hating after she becomes a vampire) and a desire for comfort (or rather, to stay in her comfort zone) but at the same time always being prepared to flee.

I'm still researching the specifics of what was worn at this time/place (it's been surprisingly really difficult to find info about late 17th/early 18th century fashion in Mexico) so I'll probably do a more detailed followup post later on, but Roksana would basically be wearing whatever other people of her social class were wearing in terms of silhouette, fabrics, etc. I don't she would have much flexibility when it comes to self expression at this time (clothing was expensive to make so she probably wouldn't be very trendy or experimental as a working class woman). I think she would favor solid colors over prints and she'd wear almost exclusively earth tones except for a blue rebozo (a long woven shawl of Mexican origin; image below) that was her mother's (blue to represent a touch of the supernatural). No jewelry, either, except for her rosary (although, I'm not sure if this actually counts as jewelry) that was passed down through her father's family.

Because she was raised without her mother and apart from her mother's family, aside from the rebozo, her clothing wouldn't really have many indigenous or African elements to it.

NOW

While she's not into metallics and synthetics, I do picture her style as kind of reminiscent of Y2K era R&B singers, especially in terms of silhouette (small, fitted tops, big pants, chunky shoes), but there are also some goth elements like corset tops, square or high necklines, the occasional puff or bell sleeve. She loves crop tops! For bottoms, she liked wide leg pants, utility/cargo pants, and joggers.

STYLE NARRATIVE

Closer to the beginning of the story, Roksana's outfits are very subdued. It's like she's constantly trying to camouflage. She's also wearing more historical looking clothes to show that she's kind of trapped in the past.

Towards the end, she starts to incorporate some bolder, more eye-catching elements, especially metallics, which also feel more futuristic, like she's finally ready to move forward and she's ready to be seen.

She also starts to dress a little more like Andros, who I picture as having very bold style.

Also, because in my version her hair is dark and curly/wavy, the tiger stripes in her hair aren't going to work out so well, so I was thinking of giving her tattoos, like tiger stripes along one arm, her shoulder and down her back (I have no reference photos for this because everything I could find on pinterest and google images looks stupid). This would not only symbolize her embracing being a predator, but it also shows that she's becoming a little more like Andros (who has tons of tattoos).

Not quite the same as the line that you talking about, but I've been thinking about a scenario for hxh where Ging and Killua are both in danger and Gon flashes back to the old lady's quiz at the beginning of the series, "Your mother and your lover have been captured by bandits, and you can only save one. Who do you save?" along with the man's response, "You can't replace your mother, but you can always find another lover." As Gon breaks into a sprint, he thinks "He's wrong! Aunt Mito replaced my mom long ago, and I have friends who've taken care of me more that Ging ever has. But," then as he grabs Killua he finishes "no one could ever replace Killua!" It's a bit dramatic, and it'll most likely never happen in canon, but I just think it'd be neat

You know I think there's a post from @hunterxhell (or another hxh meta blog, I couldn't find the post because tumblr's search function sucks ass) that theorizes that quiz's dilemma is foreshadowing something Gon will have to go through in the future, but instead of Ging it would have been Mito.

I like your idea of it being Ging instead because I think we all can agree it's a no brainer who Gon would choose if forced to lol...

Ultimately regardless if the quiz is ever brought up again I don't think you're wrong to think this would happen in canon not word by word but the general idea, in a way half of it already has.

Gon choose Ging over Killua and him climbing the world tree to meet Ging after sourly parting from Killua is symbolic of that (I don't mean that he chose Ging in that exact moment, I meant that this is the result of the decisions he took the entire CA and past arcs).

Togashi makes sure to drive the message through Ging that what Gon needs to do next is apologizing with actions and not through words.

That means the natural path this narrative has to follow now is that Gon HAS to 'choose' Killua, the connections he has made and the people who care about him in a nutshell (as Killua has become the 'person he cares most about' according to Palm), otherwise he has learned nothing and his character arc is back to 0.

Why are your favorite characters are Subaru Sumeragi and Megumi Fushiguro? What so special about them (for you)? And can you imagine how they'll interact if somehow they meet each other in the same room (can they even be friends or ally)?

In a nutshell, I like that they are both the green eyed, black haired reluctant heads of their respective highly influential spiritual warrior clans. But in all seriousness, I think they both speak very intimately to parts of me that are very prominent aspects of my personality and existence.

As a Pisces I understand Subaru's kind and ethereal nature, I feel it in my bones. I also understand his nihilism and his disillusionment with life post TB. I just don't allow myself to go there because it's dark dark dark in there. Subaru's state of mind is actually a very scary place for me to feel into, which I think plays a big role into why I prefer TB Subaru over x Subaru.

As for Megumi, Megumi's battle is my battle. Whereas I feel Subaru on a soulful level, I feel Megumi more on a sense of self level. His development feels so relatable to me. All of it, his continued undervaluing of himself despite his natural talent, his untapped potential, his bestial repressed violence, even his demonic possession.

I've shared before that I read jjk because of what it's doing to my masculine psyche and Megumi is the main reason. To the point that when the chapter with Megumi getting possessed dropped I had a very interesting dream with demonic symbolism.

About Megumi and Subaru meeting 😭🩵 I think they'd be allies! Perhaps even friends after a wile. I think Subaru would be one of those people Megumi sees as "good people". Initially he'd probably think Subaru is weak because Subaru is so forgiving and will let others hurt him if it means not hurting them compared to Megumi who has little regard for others.

They'd defo have interesting conversations on morality lol.

What is Reiki?

This post will serve as an introduction to Reiki - what it is, its' history, what treatments and attunements are, and how to learn it.

What Is Reiki?

It is a Japanese word that is pronounced "Ray-Key." "Rei" means wisdom or knowledge, and "Ki" (aka Qi or Chi, like my username) is the life-force energy that permeates all living and non-living things and is all around us. Thus, Reiki is typically translated to "Universal Life Force Energy."

Reiki, then, is an energy healing modality that channels this Universal Life Force Energy into an individual, which touts various benefits, including: relaxation, pain and tension relief, stimulating the immune system, promoting natural healing, emotional and spiritual healing, and much more. Fun fact: Reiki is now in over 800 hospitals in the USA!

Reiki is a healing modality and NOT a religion. Anyone of any faith or belief system (or lack thereof) can practice and benefit from Reiki.

History

(In a nutshell:) Reiki was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese doctor in the early 20th century. He spent most of his life searching for an ancient healing modality. At the end of a 21-day fasting retreat, Dr. Usui was apparently struck by a great light. He saw the sacred symbols he had earlier found during his research, and he acquired a deep understanding of them, receiving a spiritual empowerment, and achieving enlightenment.

Reiki was brought to the West by a Hawaiian woman named Hawayo Takata, and the teaching system she used is the one that is still used in the West today. It was thought that Takata's lineage was the only one that remained after WWII, but it was later discovered that this was not true, and that there is a whole different lineage and school in Japan that is unfortunately largely closed to outsiders.

Treatments

How can Reiki help me? What does a treatment look like?

Reiki can be beneficial for pretty much any kind of healing. It is used for physical healing and recovery, and mental and spiritual healing as well. Personally, I tend to specialize more towards the non-physical healing aspects of Reiki. Combined with my knack towards energy work, my style of Reiki is very beneficial for energetic and auric healing. It is also good for emotional healing, like moving through emotions, healing from events and people, developing as a person, etc. It can also facilitate spiritual growth.

Reiki treatments are typically done in person. At these sessions, the client will spend most if not all of the treatment lying down. No clothing needs to come off. Light-contact between the practitioner and the client may occur, those physical touch is not required for the Reiki to work.

If you are receiving Reiki, you might feel a variety of sensations, including: hot/cold flashes, heat/cool/tingling sensations, light buzzing, waves of emotions, deep relaxation/sleepiness, and others.

BUT. Reiki doesn't have to be done in person! It can be done remotely, and there is a special thing in Reiki to facilitate distance healings. It works just as well via distance as it does in-person. The treatments and sensations look the same as it would in-person, except the person won't be there physically (obviously).

How Can I Learn Reiki?

There is a common misconception that anyone can learn Reiki, simply by picking up some books and learning about them. This is not true. In order to be able to channel Reiki, you must be given the ability by a Reiki Master in what is called an Attunement. Without being attuned to Reiki, you cannot practice it.

Think of it like this: suppose that you find out that there is a new color discovered beyond the normal visible spectrum that humans can learn to see, and you want to see it. But how could you find it if you cannot see it? While theoretically possible, it would be VERY difficult. Instead, it would be much easier to find someone who can already see it and show you the color directly. This is how Reiki works; you cannot paint with this new color if you cannot see it, and you cannot see it without a Reiki Master to show it to you.

What Are Attunements?

An Attunement is a special ceremony that connects you to the source of Reiki by someone who is already connected to it. The attunement permanently changes your energy field in a new way that lets Reiki flow through you. In Reiki, there are 3 levels of practitioners, and thus are 3 attunements. Each level opens you and your energy field to more Reiki, with the 3rd, or Reiki Masters attunement, opening you up completely to Reiki.

The Attunement process is a healing journey of its own. Reiki increases your vibration, and causes anything that is below that vibration to filter out of your life. Each level corresponds to an aspect of ourselves - the 1st to the physical, the 2nd to the mental and emotional, and the 3rd to the spiritual. With each attunement, most practitioners find that they undergo healing in areas of their life that correspond to that attunement.

For example, my first attunement led to major diet changes. I suddenly lost a desire for processed foods, gravitating more towards fruits and veggies. I also ended up cutting out sugar and caffeine and other things out of my diet. My second attunement led to some incredible inner healing, including trauma work, removal of relationship blocks, coming out to my family, etc. My third attunement led to some pretty big life changes almost immediately, major spiritual growth, and there is more to come!

It is also common for practitioners to experience intuitive and spiritual growth after attunements. Many become more sensitive and receptive to energy, their connection to their intuition deepens, and some develop spiritual gifts. Personally, after my second attunement, I developed the ability to see and work with auras, and my third attunement so far has deepened that ability and made me much more sensitive to energy. Supposedly it is very common to develop the ability to work with and heal Past Lives at the master level as well.

When my Paid Services are active, I will be offering Reiki Healing as one of them! It will be distance healing (ofc). I am very good at it though, almost more effective than in-person. I'm very good at doing energetic and aura healing, as well as spiritual and emotional healing. If you want healing with something outside of those, I can do that too! I will also eventually offer to teach and attune Reiki! As a Reiki Master, I have the ability to attune others, and yes - it does work over distance! This may be a few months in the future, so if this is something that interests you, stay tuned!

My first character ask ever! Let's go!

I love Alice so much. She's an underrated character in the series imo. I'd love to tell you a few things about her.

I'll try not to give any major spoilers... in case you want to read what I've posted related to the story yourself. But here's Alice in a nutshell!

Here's a link to a small summary I've written recently for the series where Alice appears:

I wasn't allowed to mention any names, but Alice is the "sassy American redhead." I don't think I've ever straight-up mentioned the fact that she's an American girl, but if you follow the dialogue series for this story, you'd notice she says more "American" things lol (e.g. she refers to her mum as "Mom," while the rest of the characters say "Mum" 'cause they're all British haha). I wanted her to either be from Dallas or Kansas since it's where a few of my uncles and cousins live and I've been to those places a ton of times. Haven't officially decided yet, though. And it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, so... idk.

I've given her a little backstory as to how she and her family got to London in the first place - she grew up in America with her mum, Jenna, and her twin sister, Mary. Her father died when she was four. For the majority of her life, it's just been her mother and sister in the house. But then, Jenna meets Victor Johnson. They get together and after a couple of years of dating and meeting the rest of each other's friends and family (including Ben Leigh, Stephanie's boyfriend! Small world, huh?), they get married. And Jen, Mary and Alice all move to Victor's place in London. This happened when the twins are about 12 years old - just in time to start secondary school (I haven't come up with a name for the school yet lol. But I was thinking something like "Canary Hill" Secondary School? Or something... I like "Canary" because that's a type of bird, and one of the friends in the crew is super sporty, so it would be like the sports teams at the school have a kind of mascot lol. Even though we don't do mascots in England)

Which eventually brings us to now! By the events of the story, Alice is 17 (and she's a summer child lol. Her birthday is July 23rd, which makes her the youngest in the crew. Everyone else in the crew is already 18 or turns 18 early on in the story. Her birthday is right at the end). She's doing well! By now she has made a few friends and is currently in her final year of Sixth Form, studying Physics, Computing and Dance. Mary is in a different school (I called it "Brexham") because she's gifted. And at the very start of the series, we see her stressing herself out trying to do well at her most recent set of mock exams. Only to find out that she only barely passed when she got her results.

In terms of what her place in the group is, she's kind of the most "normal" out of all of the friends. Like... to an extent, they all sort of fit into a certain archetype or stereotype of some kind (I use these as a starting point and then work to develop them beyond that, and make them unique). So, there's the confident "it-girl" (Stephanie), the jock (Dylan), the troubled rebel (Bret) and the brainiac (Elise). Alice is an ordinary girl... but I labelled her as the sassy one, since she definitely has some of the most witty lines and a sarcastic sense of humour. She has a normal life... nothing huge or bad really happens to her. She and her family are a symbol of stability and security in the story (one of the characters even stays at her place when they get fed up of the stress of their own home lives). I think this is why her character is underrated in the story - she's just kind of there to most people, while others have whole crazy storylines, and they do crazy things. Alice just kind of vibes lol.

But there is so much more to her than all that. Like I said, she's one of the funnier characters (in my honest opinion. But they all have funny moments), and this was intentional from the beginning. She is incredibly insecure. And she masks a lot of her insecurities with humour. She's like the Chandler Bing of the group lol (not saying she's as funny as him lol. But you get what I'm saying). She's also prone to comparing herself with other people - she lives with a literal genius twin, and she struggles in school. She also thinks her life is super boring in comparison with everyone else she knows. She's constantly thinking, "Everyone is awesome so why aren't I?!?!" Poor thing lol.

But the thing about insecurities is that you focus so much on those things, that you forget about what makes you great. And a lot of the things you are self-conscious about are in your head (like, people don't notice those things about yourself that you hate). Alice has a lot of admirable traits and talents - she's funny and charismatic in her own unique way, she's a kind, supportive friend that is insanely loyal and always willing to help a friend out, she's an incredible dancer, she's hardworking and has a lot of resilience and drive, and she doesn't let failure get her down and stop her from improving. Remember how I said that she almost failed her mocks at the start of the story? Well, by the end, she's getting great grades, and she even wins an award for "most improved student of the year." She doesn't let a bad experience define her or overwhelm her too much... she learns from her failures and negative experiences, and she takes the time to grow and improve herself. She's actually really inspiring!

Read The Label

It is no secret that Americans face an obesity problem. While the stats vary from year to year, the essence is this: 39.6% of US Adults are obese, 31.6% are overweight, and 7.7% are severely obese. That means only 21.1% of us are not obese or—gasp—underweight. That’s hardly a symbol of American prosperity.

Obesity leads to myriad health problems, from diabetes to heart disease, joint problems, and more. It’s a train wreck waiting to happen. As a nation, many of our health problems are things we can control.

And yet we’re not exactly doing anything about it, at least not in consumer land. It’s easy to blame our busy lives not allowing enough time for exercise, but that’s a pretty lame excuse. We can always exercise, even if it is just chair yoga. The problem runs deeper, from consumption of fatty, sugar-laden processed foods, to diets centered on too much of meats, dairy, and eggs and not enough fruits and vegetables, and a sedentary lifestyle that finds us indoors interacting with some kind of screen.

It’s not like the government didn’t recognize this. In 1990, the NLEA (Nutrition Labeling and Education Act) was passed, and in 1994, the first Nutrition Facts label appeared on consumer packaged foods. It has evolved through the years such that it is packed with relevant information. Even the portion size is standardized, thanks to governmental oversight, and is based on the RACC—Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed.

Come on, isn’t a standard serving size of Oreos the whole package? Some people customarily do just that.

In 2018, restaurant chains with 20 or more units had to start posting calorie contents of menu items. Smaller chains and one-of-a-kinds were exempt, because restaurateurs had to go to great expense to have each and every entree analyzed in a lab. That bloomin’ onion at Outback Steakhouse clocks in at 1660 calories. That’s insane for an appetizer.

But evidence suggests that people still don’t consume the information. A study by the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota showed that people check the information infrequently, if at all. All that ink, going to waste.

Marketers, though, in spite of blind eyes and deaf ears among consumers, still love to run and play with marketing words that complement the government mandatories. They must assume that shoppers are more prone to reading the front of the package, and not the back.

Words and phrases like “organic,” “non-GMO,” “all natural,” “plant-based,” and the like are now commonplace, and they supposedly help guide consumer purchase. The USDA regulates some of these, but not all. Of those regulated, there are exacting requirements to make the claim of being organic or other such traits. Basically, the USDA has created benchmarks. But not all words and phrases are regulated.

In many regards, it is like the wild, wild west when it comes to food claims, and the notion of caveat emptor has never been more true. You’re on your own, buddy. Become an educated consumer. You eat at your own peril.

All of this coming at a time when a major class action lawsuit against Wendy’s and McDonald’s has been dismissed. The judged ruled that photographic puffery of menu items is just part of the marketing hyperbole. It’s on you, not them.

I am one of the few who does read labels carefully. The ongoing evolution of the Nutrition Facts label makes it easier than ever to identify the source(s) of a food’s bad traits, as well as bold-faced ingredients (14 different ones!) that are red flags based on a person’s allergies or food choices. And if you’re wondering whether a shopper could use the same level of scrutiny online as in the store, the answer is yes. I checked my most recent Walmart+ purchases, and found each item in my history has both the Nutrition Facts and Ingredients shown.

So what do we make of this? It’s a mess, there’s a ton of information, and from the looks of things, most people are ignoring it. In a nutshell, they’re just not having any of this health and wellness the federal government would like to foster, even if it is a public good. Let’s face it, a sick population costs money to keep on life support, but it seems that few care.

And here we are, four out of five overweight to some extent. Eating a WFPB (Whole Food, Plant-Based) -diet is tough, but it works if care is taken to get the right amounts of nutrients. It is the extreme, though. But man is it inconvenient, not to mention difficult to do in public. You have to take the time to know your foods, not to mention mustering up the resolve to forsake the comfort foods our culture promotes so heavily.

It’s a tangled mess. The government thinks it is important, but in the end, it all boils down to personal responsibility. You can bring a person to organic tofu, but you can’t make them eat it. And the marketers always love an opportunity to spin doctor anything. I once found a frozen grocery item that had the familiar (and one may now say over-used) phrase “plant-based” on the label. Turned out it was only one of the ingredients making that claim; the item in totality was hardly vegan, if that was your goal.

I’m OK with the personal responsibility. Eat what you like, whatever it is. But please also figure out a way to squeeze in a fitness regime. At the end of the day, and aside from any genetic predispositions, it boils down to what we put in, and what we put out. And please start reading those labels. You don’t have to be a food nutritionist to understand them, although I’m sure it helps.

In an organic kind of way, of course.
