top tier leverage dynamic is nate trying to teach the rest of the crew morals even though his own moral compass is a jeopardy wheel so even though he constantly lectures them on bad behavior it comes with a huge moral caveat of "but remember anything is okay so long as it fucks with rich people"

Honestly it's so funny that Caleb told Essek, "Once you're a part of the Mighty Nein, you're in; you of all people should know that by now," and then like a week later Essek tried to give this whole noble speech about "I hope one day our paths may cross again," as if this was some long goodbye, and dip.
Sir, what was the game plan. You couldn't even avoid these assholes when you were desperately, anxiously trying to. Yasha has been attempting to impress upon you that she tried to fuck off on her own to atone for her sins and it didn't work since you all had dinner. Beau actually said you were a good person, which is unheard of. Caleb is only not making out with you right here because he's not going to be that asshole who tries to tempt you into going back to a city where you would be executed on sight. They are sending you to crash on their unhinged friend's couch and they will not take no for an answer. Jester doesn't care if you'd welcome her messages at any point because she will be sending them, and there is literally nothing you can do to stop her.
How else did you think this was gonna go. Boy, I know you have 22 intelligence but by the light you are fucking dense.

The claim that platonic male friendships don't exist in media due to shipping is so stupid. Most guys interacting is still just regular non-romantic bro stuff. It is only like one out of 20 fictional relationships that you get something utterly insane like "I loved him and he asked me for one last thing. And I did it because I loved him." Or "For everything you did to keep me alive this long, you may slay me" or

I'm generally a fully signed-up member of the Mrs Westenra Sucks Club, but I've found myself pondering more sympathetic ways to interpret her character and actions.
I think the most important thing to remember is that Mrs Westenra is dying, and since she has a 19-year-old daughter, she's probably dying young. If she's around 45, actuarial tables for the 1890s suggest that she would normally expect to live at least another 25 years, probably longer (which I'm mentioning since people normally underestimate Victorian adult life expectancy).
She was expecting to be around to see her daughter securely married and to help with her grandchildren; now there's a question mark over whether she'll even see her daughter's wedding. She's experiencing end-stage heart failure: she's probably in a lot of pain (which in her culture she is supposed to bear with quiet fortitude) and may have other symptoms such as fatigue, depression, nausea, insomnia and cognitive impairment. She's probably not able to think clearly a lot of the time. It's not surprising that she makes some bad decisions.
Is that enough to justify her treatment of Lucy? Maybe not. But on that point, I think it's worth noting that while Mrs Westenra is the worst offender in treating her adult daughter like she's a child, she's not the only one. When Mrs Westenra confides details of her illness to Mina, Mina doesn't seem to push back on the idea that this should be kept a secret from Lucy, even in the privacy of her journal. The idea that things should be kept from Lucy for her own protection is one that nearly everyone who interacts with Lucy shares.
In the novel as it stands (not in deleted sections, admittedly) we also don't see Lucy herself pushing for greater independence. In fact, what she wants from her mother is not more freedom but more comfort, in being allowed to share a bed with her.
A final thought on that. Victorians turned against the idea of bed-sharing because they believed that sharing beds spread diseases:
In her housekeeping guide published in 1892, Mrs. Elizabeth F. Holt warned readers that “the air which surrounds the body under the bed clothing is exceedingly impure, being impregnated with the poisonous substances which have escaped through the pores of the skin.”
(from this article)
In other words, Mrs Westenra might worry that sharing a bed would risk passing on her own illness to Lucy. I think denying Lucy's request could be seen as protective rather than dismissive.
I imagine I'm still going to be really annoyed when she [spoilers redacted]. But I think she could be seen as a tragic and sympathetic figure, not a malicious one. This novel has several characters who want to do the right thing but make mistakes (Seward, Van Helsing) and Mrs Westenra could be interpreted as one of them.

Listen, both Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian were shitty parents that fucked their kids (& wwx) up in various different ways. But I will forever be more sympathetic to a frustrated woman in a patriarchal society stuck in a toxic marriage than to the man who has power and authority to change something but refuses to do it because he doesn't like conflict and pretends like nothing is wrong.

Not father & son, not master & disciple, but a secret third thing
First of all, let me preface this by being clear that everyone is free to headcanon anything they want and like/dislike anything they like/dislike! That being said, sometimes I see international fans interpret FDB as LLH's son, or their dynamic as parent-child or otherwise familial, and as a native chinese speaker, I just wanted to share some reasons why I personally did not interpret them as familial.
Granted, at the start of the show, FDB is kept in the dark and also not up to LLH's level of skill in solving cases. However, FDB quickly catches up in crime-solving skills, intellect and maturity by the 2nd half of the show, after a well-written growth arc. I think the beauty of the characters and relationships in this show is that they grow & evolve, and are meant to do so. The dynamic that LLH & FDB had in episode 1 is quite different from their dynamic at the end of the show. By the later episodes, they are 2 adults who are very much equals.
Why I don't read them as father & son:
LLH & FDB act and speak in a manner that is far too informal & familiar with one another, which would be extremely inappropriate for any kind of parent & child, even a surrogate one. Several times, FDB calls LLH by just his first name "Lianhua", and sometimes even calls him "Damn Lianhua" when he is angry/upset at LLH. This would be extremely rude for a disciple to call a master, or a son to call a father. No son talks to his father the way FDB talks to LLH, and no disciple talks to their master like that. Unless the son/disciple hates the father/master, and is outright rejecting his father/master altogether. As we see in the show, not only does FDB not hate LLH at all, he instead cares deeply for LLH and would do anything to save him. Why, then would someone scold/curse someone they care about? Does the trope of the upset spouse/partner sound familiar?
For comparison, see FDB's interactions with He Xiaohui, who he is close to - he is informal & affectionate with her, but never calls her anything other than "娘 niang" ("mother"). I can't emphasize enough how taboo it is in Chinese culture to ever call your parent or parental figure by their name under any circumstance.
Tumblr media
2. In ep 31, FDB himself explicitly rejects the idea of LLH as his shifu and himself as LLH's disciple, responding that he is too old to be LLH's disciple and it was merely a joke. He clearly sees LLH as an equal, and rejects the notion of their relationship being anything other than that of 2 adult equals. LLH also tells his shiniang that FDB is not his disciple, and a few episodes ago LLH told FDB that he has never understimated FDB.
Coding/hints as something other than platonic:
Tumblr media
Zhiji/zhijiao - FDB calls LLH his 知交 zhijiao in ep 19, and 知己 zhiji in ep 34. "In this life, I, Fang Duobing, recognize you as my only zhiji." is practically a love declaration. And this bond is reciprocated by LLH, bc in a deleted line in ep 19, translated by forayuarchive on twitter, LLH is the one who first calls FDB his zhijiao.
To clarify, Zhiji is not specifically a romantic term, but it's what was used in both The Untamed and Word of Honor - both dramas based on danmei novels with canon gay main pairings - to bypass censorship, to code the bond between the main duo as deeper than your typical platonic male friendship. (See this post for a detailed explanation of the significance/history behind the term zhiji, and see this twitter thread for an explanation of the meaning of zhijiao in MLC - especially how zhijiao is specifically mutual, reciprocated).
Tumblr media
2. Married bickering - forayuarchive on twitter has discussed in these twitter threads how the tone of many of LLH & FDB's interactions (especially FDB) is similar to how married couples or romantic partners speak to one another bc of the level of familiarity, tone and language. For my fav example, see this note (translation by forayuarchive) that FDB left LLH in ep 35, which reads pretty much like a note that a spouse/partner might write when leaving their shared house in a hurry.
Tumblr media
3. "Xiaobao" - Personally as a native Chinese speaker, LLH calling FDB "xiaobao" in front of everyone is a level of intimacy that genuinely would make me feel embarrassed to hear as a third party. 小宝 xiao bao (literal meaning = "little treasure") is usually something you call actual babies/children AND is FDB's family nickname for him, so if you're calling a grown man that in front of everyone including his colleagues, family and even strangers, then one might assume he is likely either your biological family or your romantic partner. (For comparison, just imagine calling your s/o their parent's special childhood nickname for them at work.)
4. Deleted lines where FDB calls LLH "xiaohua'er". 小花儿 Xiaohua'er ("little flower") is very intimate and feels like something someone might call a lover. Or, at least, definitely not a platonic shifu, even less so a parental figure. (For meta on the names that LLH & FDB use for one another, see forayuarchive's twitter thread.)
5. More deleted scenes (translated by forayuarchive on twitter), perhaps cut due to censorship, which make apparent LLH's high regard and deep care for FDB. For e.g., a line of internal monologue by LLH in ep 40, translated here by forhenjun, shows that LLH thinks of FDB as the only person in his two lifetimes who has always treated him as a human being rather than putting him on an unfair pedestal.
6. Official MLC accounts act like as if they ship them.
As murderedbyhomework mentioned, there is a song in the official soundtrack of MLC called "Fanghua's Day-to-Day Life" (yes, the exact same words as their ship name). Sounds like a couple's daily domestic life, doesn't it?
Tumblr media
The official iQiYi Romance youtube channel lists clips of LLH & FDB under the romance category.
Tumblr media
The official MLC douyin account posts MVs with emotional captions (e.g. this one translated here by forayuarchive) that emphasize how much both LLH and FDB mean to one another. Another official MLC douyin calls LLH & FDB the person each other trusts the most.
The MLC clips posted by the official Guangdong TV weibo account also has captions such as these (translated by rice_jpg) that straight up describe FDB's feelings towards LLH as "when you like someone" (very similar CN phrasing as the phrasing used to describe romantic crushes).
7. They are subtly paralleled with a canon straight romantic couple (see fanqxiaobao's twitter thread on the parallels btwn LXY/QWM scenes and certain LLH/FDB scenes). MLC also made a distinct change from the novel by not having FDB get married to Princess Zhaoling, even though the drama could have easily given FDB a romance with her.
8. If you're familiar with chinese romantic tropes or the danmei genre, LLH & FDB fit many common romantic tropes e.g. sharing a drink on the rooftop under the moonlight, forgotten first meeting in childhood (and then meeting again properly as adults), power couple fighting side by side (they even held hands!), nianxia, protective younger ml, sickly older mc - just to name a few. Danmei even has many stories of shizun/shifu & disciple pairings who fall in love as adult equals.
There's honestly lots more but these are just some off the top of my head. Again everyone is free to interpret anything! This is just me explaining why as a native chinese speaker I personally did not read their dynamic as that of a father and son.

Here's a little klance idea:
Lance sets up a blog in the early times of Voltron with the help of Coran, and during his time he writes pretty personal stuff on it and posts it into the void. He's got like 33 followers, which isnt a lot but its nice to have his thoughts heard.
At some point during dinner, Allura talks about their reach w the coalition, and he lets it slip that he blogs and maybe that will help to boost the reach, and when Allura asks how many followers he has, he says just that. 33.
Hunk and the gang gets nosy and searches it up to read, and Allura stops dead in the tracks.
"Lance this isn't 33 followers." He's like "Yeah it is? Obviously it's 33, maybe 3 'cause why are there decimals to the number? They don't comment so it's pretty useless."
"No this isn't 33. It's 3 point 3."
"What, people?"
"Billions."
Everyone goes quiet, all staring at Lance until Hunk screams. "BILLIONS?!"
"Is THAT what that altean sign is?!" Lance gasps and points to the billion sign in altean.
Coran enters, learns about the blog and follower numbers, and just goes "Great job! You did better than I expected!"
Allura is astonished and crosschecking the reach between Lances stupid blog and the coalition's own numbers.
"You're double our numbers!" She gasps.
Hunk and Pidge are rummaging through his blog, looking for info and crumbs and embarrasments.
Keith is being silent and not looking into it, only eating his dinner while eyeing everyone else.
"You honestly thought you only had 33 followers?" He asks.
"Well duh! Nobody left comments and were silent, so ofc course I didn't think there were many."
"Well that's because I put your blog on locked comments, just in case you get space haters." Coran commented.
Aha, they all thought to themselves.
Lance only now remembered how personal some of his posts were, and immediately grabbed his phone to delete certain posts.
Ofc Hunk catches on, looks over his shoulder and yells out the names of the posts, one of them being "Mullet". Keith looks at him, finally.
"Really? You trashtalked me on your blog? That's low, even for you."
Lance is pretty flustered by this, but tries to spit back.
Turns out, Keith had been one of his first followers and already knew about all this. Was he good at being supportive in any way with words? No, absolutely not. Had he screenshotted the blogpost about him and kept a printed version of it under his bed?
Maybe.

my mom was opening up to me about how divorce was really hard on her so she thinks it sucks and she wouldnt wish it upon her worst enemy and I could not form a coherent thought in my mind to explain any of the genuine social benefits of divorce because I was just thinking about my "I ♡ DIVORCE" shirt image and my "may divorce be with you" tag and trying really hard not to laugh

"If I was surprised at anything, it may have been that it seemed like people were less willing to let her make mistakes than they were with Aang."
I hate Bryke's guts, but the one thing I will agree with him (Bryan) on is this.
I've gotten heat from Aang stans for saying this, but for me Korra will always be a better written character for me. Not because Aang's childish and optimistic and naive or anything like that. That doesn't matter to me. Hell, it's not even for his actions during DOBS or EIP or Kataang. Sure, those things aren't great, but they aren't the issue with his character.
It's not about Aang's actions, it's about how Aang's actions are treated by the narrative.
This is nothing new obviously, I've said this before. Many times. Aang kissing Katara in EIP is treated as him messing up his chances with her, not because he forced something on her she didn't want. The kiss in DOBS doesn't even come up again in the show (and when it did in the comics, Aang blew up and nearly melted her face off so-). I've spoken enough about his holier-than-thou attitude in TSR too and how his message of forgiveness is perpetuated as the right one.
It's one thing that is 100% better in LOK; Korra is held accountable for her actions, by the narrative, the other characters, and herself. A big part of LOK is Korra acknowledging her actions and making the effort to change and be better.
A great counter to Aang repeatedly crossing boundaries with Katara is in Reunion when she warns Asami about trusting Hiroshi and Asami calls her out on giving unsolicited advice. Korra immediately backs off and tries to apologize when she sees that she upset her.
Now compare this to Aang's behavior in TSR or EIP.
And before anyone says it, I know Korra's older. I also know Asami reconnecting with her father is different than Katara wanting to kill Yon Rha. I get all of that.
But honestly? That doesn't matter to me. Because when you're talking about fictional characters- especially character progression and development for the protagonist- addressing flaws is important. Accountability is important. Especially when it comes to how they treat the people around them (love interests like Asami and Korra probably being the most important).
This is what solidifies Korra's character development as being better than Aang's for me.
However, I do think it's because of this framing (and the fact that she's a woman, but shh) that Korra gets more hate. Her flaws being addressed also means that they're constantly apparent. The audience is always aware of them. Whereas Aang's worse actions tended to be brushed over or excused. Or the context of those mistakes were maneuvered to make the audience feel bad for him instead of the one affected by his actions (EIP EIP EIP EIP).
So yes, Bryan, people were more willing to let Aang make mistakes because you and your bestie failed to actually address them

THE AUDACITY OF THIS HEDGEHOG!!
So i was rewatching Shattered for a post when i noticed something for the first time.
Usually on that scene where Tails tells Sonic i usually look at Tails becuse he stands out more to me, but for the first time i was looking at Sonic instead, and i noticed he made some sort of expression, but couldn't discern what, so i looked at it again and
this
motherfucker
Tumblr media
rolled his eyes at him
He literally just forgave you after you ignored his warnings and fell for Eggman's trap (whether Tails could have explained himself better is not relevant, he felt ignored and you apologized), and literally the same day, he tells you to be careful and you roll your eyes at him. No wonder he was so upset at you ignoring him, no wonder he was so dismissive about your apology. You probably ignore him all the time, he knew you were just going to do whatever you wanted, of course he didn't take you seriously.
