mind games [part eleven]
masterlist | part ten | part twelve
zuko x fem!reader fluff, angst smau (it has the social media elements, but not as much as the last series)
avatar: the last airbender
summary - being zuko’s best friend is the easiest thing in the world. until he gets a girlfriend and you realize you’re in love with him
warnings / includes  (this counts for any/all chapters) - fighting, suggestive, language, crying, alcohol, cheating, talk about injuries, making out, alluding to sex, talks about sex. you are sokka and katara’s older sister. you, mai, and zuko are seniors in college, sokka and suki are juniors, katara, aang, and toph are sophomores.
note - so for this one im gonna be switching pov’s. so for the first half it’ll be 2nd point of view with y/n and the second half it'll be like 2nd point of view but with jet (hope this made sense lol)
————
“so, how has living with jet been?” aang asked.
“really good,” you smiled. “he’s a really good housemate. he cooks, actually cleans. doesn’t mind that i had to take up a little more closet space.”
“wow, sounds like you have the perfect man,” suki smirked. “i do,” you sighed dreamily.
you and jet had been dating now for a little more than 4 1/2 months. you two decided that it was time to move in together. you two had already practically been living together so it seemed right to start the next phase of your relationship. you weren’t at jet’s, though. you were at an ice cream shop downtown with your friends.
living with jet was amazing, as stated, but you rarely saw your friends. college was coming to an end, too. with you and between that and looking for jobs and picking up extra shifts at the JD, it had been very busy. but you had just finished all your finals and was now ready to graduate in the next week, so you were able to relax, finally.
“how about you guys, how have you been?” you asked.
“really good! i can’t believe you won’t be at school with us,” katara frowned.
“yeah, i hate to admit it, but i’m gonna miss you,” sokka said.
you chuckled, “thanks, sokka. well, i’m not planning one really going anywhere. i’ll just be out of school, which thank the spirits for that.”
“must be nice knowing you don’t have to deal with finals anymore,” toph suck her tongue out in disgust.
“yeah, i definitely won’t miss that,” you snorted, taking a bite of your ice cream cone.
“have you found a job yet?” toph asked. ”i’ve found a few. i have yet get interviews, though. i’m waiting until the july to so i can enjoy there summer,” you explained.
“makes sense. we’ll miss you at the JD,” katara said.
“yeah, you’re the only one who makes good frappuccinos,” aang chortled.
“i know. zuko and katara just can’t grasp the recipe,” you teased.
“i can! i just prefer to make the tea. it’s a lot easier,” katara deafened.
“don’t worry. i agree,” you smiled. your phone vibrated on the table.
you turned it over, seeing that there as a text from zuko.
“is that zuko?” aang asked. “yeah, how did you know?” i asked.
“he’s been missing you lately,” sokka explained.
“oh, really? we hung out a couple weeks ago, though,” you said. “exactly. he knows you been busy so he hasn’t asked you to hang out yet, but we told him you’re less busy now,” aang said.
“oh,” you frowned. “well, he asked if we could hang out today. you guys okay if i go?”
“yeah, of course! we’ve been here for hours, anyways,” suki said.
“great. still on for the sleepover tonight?” you asked, getting up and grabbing your purse.
“you know it! have fun,” katara smiled.
“will do,” you smiled back, waving goodbye at them.
you walked to your car, getting in and driving to your friend’s and sibling’s house. you parked in the garage, going in and seeing zuko on the couch.
“hey, stranger,” you smiled, taking off your shoes.
“hey, long time no see,” zuko smiled, getting up. you hummed in reply, opening your arms out and hugging him.
“i’ve missed you,” zuko whispered.
“i’ve missed you, too. i’m sorry i haven’t reached out,” you sighed, pulling away.
“no worries. we aren’t kids anymore. we have our own life,” zuko smiled reassuringly.
“right. so, you said you wanted to talk about our plan?” you asked, walking over with zuko to the couch.
“yeah. so, how do i approach her?” zuko ask. “well, i wouldn’t suggest doing it over a date. do it at night so you can go somewhere else and sleep immediately. you two are living together, right?” you asked.
“yeah,” zuko nodded. “great, well, just tell her you need to talk to her. don’t hint at anything, be neutral about it all and break the news to her,” you explained.
“easier said than done,” zuko chuckled.
you furrowed your brows and studied his face, seeing the guilt and confusion in his eyes. you leaned against the couch and put your hand on his forearm comfortingly.
“are you sure you want to do this?” you asked. “i am,” zuko nodded.
“are you sure? like 100% positive?” you checked with him.
zuko chuckled, “yes, i am. plus, i…i like someone else.”
your eyes widened, “o-oh. this is new info. who is it?” your heart started to race and you began to feel very nervous thinking about who he could like.
“i’d rather not say just yet,” he said, averting his gaze from you.
“alright. well, no pressure,” you smiled softly. your phone then started to vibrate in your back pocket. you pulled it out, seeing that jet was calling you.
you answered it quickly. “hey, babe, what’s up?”
“hey, when’re you coming home?” jet asked.
“oh, um…” your voice trailed off as you looked at the clock. “tomorrow? i’m hanging out with zuko right now, and you know i’m having a little sleepover with the girls.”
“oh, right,” jet muttered. you furrowed your brows as he sounded annoyed and sad. you stood up off the couch, holding your first finger up to zuko to let him know you’ll be back in a minute.
you walked into the kitchen and leaned against the island counter. “hey, you sound sad. everything okay?”
“yeah, i just miss you,” jet sighed. you smiled, “i miss you, too, but i haven't seen zuko or my friends in a while.” “i know, i know. i wasn’t going to make you come home, don’t worry,” jet said.
“i didn’t think you were. i know you’re understanding.”
you and jet sat on the phone in an uncomfortable silence for a few minutes before you spoke up. you did a little awkward cough before speaking.
“so, um, i better go,” you said.
“oh, yeah, yeah, of course. i’ll see you tomorrow,” jet said.
“see you tomorrow. i love you.” “i love you, too,” jet smiled, hanging up the phone.
he sighed and gently threw his phone on the bed. he laid down, running his hands through his hair and down his face. he felt so jealous. so jealous of you and zuko. he knew it was silly since you have been nothing but loyal to him, but the unwanted thoughts of you and zuko still crept into his mind every so often. he was thankful you two didn’t live together anymore and that you lived with him now, but jet was beginning to think that wasn’t enough.
even though you and zuko weren’t living together and didn’t hang out as often, you two were constantly texting and calling. jet often found you downstairs late at night texting zuko, smiling and laughing at whatever he said. it made jet’s blood boil to see another guy making you happy, especially since it was a known fact - not between you and zuko, though - that you had a thing for zuko a while back. jet was positive that you still had a thing for him, no matter how much you denied it.
he sat up on his bed and grabbed his phone, getting up and going to the only person he knew would understand; mai.
he drove to her house, going up and knocking on the door. mai answered the door almost immediately, a surprised but pleasant smile on her face.
“hey, jet. what’re you doing here?” she asked.
“i was just seeing if you were free. y/n and zuko are hanging out, and we haven’t hung out in a while,” jet shrugged.
“right, right. well, come in,” mai held the door open for him. jet stepped in with a smile, walking into the living room.
“i like what you did with the place,” jet noted, looking around at the new furniture and decorations. there were a lot more brighter colours than he remembered.
“thanks. ty lee said i should make the place more lively,” mai chuckled.
“glad you took her advice,” jet smiled.
mai nodded, “are you hungry? i was just about to eat some leftover pizza.”
“yeah, sure. you got any beers?” jet asked.
“yep,” mai said, going over to the kitchen. “make yourself comfortable!”
“thanks,” jet said and sat down on the couch.
mai came in with a pizza both and a six pack bottle of beer. mai and jet watched tv for a while, getting drunk on the beer. after a while of silence, mai decided to ask jet about what he thought about you and zuko.
“so, you jealous of zuko and y/n, too?” zuko asked.
jet’s brows raised, “w-what?”
mai smirked and turned fully to him. “that’s the reason why you came here, because of zuko and y/n.”
jet sighed, turning to her. “yeah. you caught me.”
“they act like they’re dating each other,” mai rolled her eyes. “zuko is always like “y/n this”, “y/n that”, “look what y/n said”, “sorry, i’m talking to y/n. god, it’s all so annoying.” “and they always stay up late talking to each other! like, i understand they’re each other’s best friends, but we’re here, too.” “right!” mai nodded. “i wouldn’t be surprised if they were making out right now.” jet frowned and looked down. “you think they are?”
“mmm, i wouldn’t doubt it,” mai shrugged.
jet looked up at mai, his eyes meeting her’s. he studied her face for a few moments, his eyes roaming her face and stopping at her lips. mai noticed his gaze and smirked, scooting closer to him. she put her hand on his thigh, her fingers snaking up his leg.
“m-mai, what’re you doing?” jet stammered. his heart was racing a million beats per second.
“c’mon, we both know zuko and y/n are in love with each other. plus, i’m pretty sure zuko is going to break up with me soon. let’s just have some fun, okay?” mai gave jet a flirtatious look, biting her lip and batting her lashes.
jet sighed, looking into mai’s eyes. he knew in his heart that you weren’t cheating on him with zuko, or anyone, but the just thought of you with zuko, kissing him, running your fingernails all over his back, moaning his name, it clouded jet’s mind with anger and fear. without thinking rationally, jet smashed his lips onto mai’s.
both melted into the kiss immediately, grabbing at each other and pressing themselves closer to each other. after a few moments of kissing, jet pulled away, looking a mai with wide, shocked eyes. the kiss with mai honestly felt amazing.
mai smiled at him, taking his hand into her’s. “wanna go upstairs?”
jet nodded furiously, getting up off the couch, mai leading him up to her bedroom.

Headcanons for being a Party Member
Stranger Kids x reader
warnings:
a/n: 💖💖 these ones were kind bad but i hope you like!
prompt: anonymous: “Hi! Can you make a headcannon for Stranger Things of just being in the party? Sorry if its too vague. Thank you so much for giving us so much free content!!”
Tumblr media
you’ve known the boys for a long, long time
your mom was friends with joyce in high school, so you knew will your whole life
he introduced you to mike and soon lucas and dustin had joined the mix
let’s face it, you guys weren’t the most popular, but as long as you had each other it was fine
“at recess do you want to play castle?”
“yes! but we need to make up our characters”
will the wise was born that day, it just stuck
you guys were obsessed with star wars when it came out
“i’d totally be a jedi” -mike
“mike, you’d cry at the sight of any alien creature”
“not true!”
“i think lucas would be a kickass pilot, though”
“i’d get the princess, too” -lucas
dustin ended up playing lightsabers with you, though
you’ve accidentally knocked down tons of stuff in mike’s basement
“cut it out, you guys!”
“soooorryyyyy”
“you are not!”
AV club was just the 5 of you acting afool under adult supervision
mr. clark was still proud of your young minds, though
D&D campaigns, you were the rogue
you were also easily distracted during the game
“anyone want chips, im gonna get some chips”
“no! you can’t leave now!”
“watch me”
playing with mike’s toys while he’s not looking
battling them with lucas, dustin, and will
until mike started protesting
bike rides around town until sunset
SLEEPOVERS
“who the hell is snoring?”
“i think it’s dustin”
“PILLOW FIGHT!!!”
“kids, time to sleep!” -any parent
“let’s watch a scary movie”
“no! i mean—i’m tired” -mike
depending on which house you were staying in, you’d have a great time
will’s brother, jonathan, was always nice to you
nancy...not so much
“hi na—” *door slams* “oh...”
erica always intruded on your sleepovers at lucas’s
“i wanna play! can i play?”
“no, erica, go play somewhere else”
“you’re so mean, lucas”
“bye!”
dustin didn’t have any siblings, but he did have a cat who was pretty nice
“hi mews!”
the night will disappeared was a night you’ll never forget
you were so determined to find him, he had to be around somewhere
you ended up getting in deeper water than you’d originally thought when you met eleven, who apparently had superpowers
“mike!!! you’re mom is gonna kill you for bringing a random girl in the house”
“i know! shhhhh”
she was weird to say the least
and it was pretty scary sneaking around with her
“dude...she has the force”
“shut up!”
after a long week of fighting with your friends and encountering inter dimensional monsters and the government, you realized your life would never be the same
your mom was pretty protective over you for a while
the party had to come to your house instead for the next few months
“sorry guys, she’s just...really upset about the whole thing”
“it’s okay, y/n. we don’t mind”
being each other’s support system
especially when it came to will, he really worried you guys
“today is will’s doctor visit, hope it goes okay...”
spending HOURS in the arcade, struggling to beat other people’s high scores
“i’m gonna do it! i’m gonna get the top score!”
“in your dreams, y/n”
hAlLoWeEn
you knew you weren’t supposed to dress up at school but no one was paying attention to you when you told them
unfortunate.
there was a new girl who mike hated right off the bat
but lucas and dustin wouldn’t stop fighting over
“you two are the worst, you know that?”
trick or treating and dumping your candy later on to trade, the most effective way to get the best halloween
“nougat, disgusting. anybody want it? i’ll give it to you for free”
*dustin and you simultaneously* “ME!”
dustin’s “pet lizard” scaring the hell out of you
“dart makes me...uncomfortable”
max pulling you aside to ask why mike hates her
“uh...he’s a dick? i don’t know”
you and max ended up getting along pretty okay, though
she did complain about mike a LOT though
and when lucas filled her in on the demogorgon/upside-down/eleven situation, EVERYONE was pissed
you guys realized that the upside down stuff was not over and there was an epic teamup with all of you yaaaay
steve harrington adopted you it’s true
eleven came back
that was cool
you gave her a hug bc like duh??? you missed her
steve babysitting you guys and then getting beat up by max’s stepbrother, billy
“can i hit him? i wanna hit him”
“do it!”
doing dumbass shit in the tunnels that ended up working out anyways! yay!
“we’re all gonna die we’re all gonna die oh my god i’m too young to die”
“Y/N STOP”
in the end everything was (mostly) okay but like, that was scarring
summer rolled around and el and mike were dating, max and lucas were dating, and dusting came back from camp and claimed to be dating some girl from faaaar away
“liar”
“i’m not lying!”
steve sneaking you into movies
he also gave you (and only you) free ice cream but only bc he knew you wouldn’t tell anyone else
robin and you talking while you hid in the break room to eat your ice cream
“so...what do you do for fun”
“kill monsters”
“oh...okay”
kinda sick of the party’s shit for a while, so dustin and you were off scheming with the scoops employees
bad ideaaaa!! the russians!! you were almost killed!!
rescue mission for steve and robin
“they’re high as shit”
“nO YOu aRe”
“wonderful, we’re screwed”
losing them fhdhdhsh
“y/n?!”
“what? i’m not a babysitter!”
being chased by russians but also the rest of the party showing up and updating you but also adults finally making an appearance and you wanting to cry because like what the fuck is happening
being chased by the mind flayer
“GUYS IF WE DONT MAKE IT I WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW I LOVE YOU”
“Y/N. STOP SAYING THINGS THAT MAKE US THINK WE’RE GOING TO DIE”
eek that night sucked
you also almost fell down the hill that cerebro was placed on
and then uhhh hopper died so that was really bad and will ended up moving away with el and everyone was very sad
your mom cried when joyce left :(
you cried way too much
might i add going over to lucas’s to hang out with erica bc now you guys are friends lmaooo
“why are you here, y/n?”
“erica wanted me to come over”
“you two are impossible”
and to end this on a high note, the remaining party members in town were finally working through their differences as you all grew up and knew that it’d be impossible to separate for good
also pizza nights every week (sometimes accompanied by an older teen bc why not)
“if you guys eat all the damn pizza we’re gonna have a problem”
“we can’t help it! we’re growing!”

Day five of Horror on Cherry Lane Challenge! Today’s prompt was monsters!
Little brat’s been in the school ten minutes after the bell.
After they both broke curfew, Max staying out late trick-or-treating and going to one of her little friends’ house to trade candy, and Billy crashing at the lingering party until he was sober enough to come home and not get his ass kicked, they were supposed to be straight home today. Used up all their free time for the week apparently.
Max knew that this morning, he already told her to forget about the damn AV club. If he had to cancel on whatever chick he was going to take out (was it Carol? No, Carol is Tommy’s girl. Fuck he doesn’t know anybody yet) Max had to give her shit up to.
He gets bored of waiting for the little twerp and tosses his cigarette to the ground, marching in there his damn self.
Only time he’s ever been in this building was to pick Max up from AV. His dad made him come all the way inside and give his assessment on the teacher. Asked (slapped him and demanded it) that he do so to check on Max. Just to be sure. Like he cares.
But it works out anyways that he knows the way now that Max has decided to disappear and it’s up to him to track her down. Only problem is he gets there, and the room is empty. Not even just that Max isn’t in there, there’s no damn kids or teacher or nothing. Just a knocked over lamp and some shit on the floor.
He ain’t trying to hunt her down, but he has to get her back home in like, the next half-hour, and she’s somewhere she ain’t supposed to be. The school isn’t very big, half the damn building is closed off for the school board to use, so there isn’t much ground to cover.
He’s not trying to get himself arrested either, so he makes quick work of the school, checking all the places Max might be. Still, he comes up empty, and he’s about to just give up and let whoever she was with keep her when he sees something scurrying across the floor out of the corner of his eye.
It’s not really any of his business whether or not the middle school is infested, but it catches his eye for the wrong reasons.
It’s a gnarly little thing, a cross between a frog and rat or some shit, but Billy’d recognize that thing anywhere. It’s a fucking monster, crawling around the halls of his sisters school.
Purely on instinct, he tracks the thing to where it cornered itself, taking advantage of the fact that it’s still small and growing into its demon teeth to stomp on the gross monster. He stops once he’s positive it’s dead and not just faking him out like they do sometimes, he’s not gross or something, but he nearly jumps out of his skin when behind him, Max shouts, “Billy!”
He turns, ignoring the pile of goop that was one of those things to face his, apparently, from the flush on her cheeks and the bitterness in her tone, “Jesus, shitbird. What is wrong with you?”
He’s hardly even got the question out before Max snaps at him, “Why would you kill it!”
“Do you even know what that thing is?” Billy raises eyebrows, no patience for Max telling him what to do, but she counters with something that surprises him, “It was Dustins, he discovered it, you jerk!”
“Yeah, no. These things’ve been around longer’n any of us have been alive. And I don't care who found it first. They’re fucking monsters.”
“How do you even know what he was? You killed him.”
“It. Not him. Don’t humanize them.” Billy hisses, warning Max, “And anyways, I seen some shit kid. Don’t ask. And don’t play around with anymore of these little fuckers. Give ‘im a day or two ‘n he’ll be the size of a gray wolf. Another month or so and he’s seven feet tall.”
“But what is he?” Max demands stubbornly.
Billy answers simply, “Something you don’t want anything to do with.”
By now, the rest of Max’s friends have followed the sound of her yelling to their little showdown, and it’s Dustin, the owner of this thing, that chimes in, “But wait, does that mean you know?”
“Know what?” Max huffs, but she gets ignored, Billy firing back at Dustin, “Do you?”
All four of the kids nod at once. Billy sighs deeply, “Jesus, how the fuck did a bunch of little kids get caught up in this bullshit?”
“How did you?” These kids aren’t very original coming back at him with his own questions like this.
Again Max interjects, being left out of the questioning just making her more confused. “Excuse me, but what exactly are we talking about?”
But again nobody acknowledges her, Billy busy answering the boys’ questions.
“Had a friend came from that lab. You know about that part too?” He clarifies, getting three attentive nods, and this time one disapproving scowl, as he explains, “Well the monsters followed ‘im. Through their portals and his head and shit, they were out in California too. That’s how I know I was right to kill that thing.”
There’s a moment of stunned silence before Mike insists, “I don’t believe you.”
“I don’t know, man. How else would he know about everything?” Lucas shrugs, exciting Dustin and promoting him to ask, “Do you think he knows about Eleven too?”
“I’m still here too you guys. What is going on?” Max interrupts, serving only as a reminder, Lucas turning the conversation back to Billy as he asks, “Why haven’t you told Max?”
Billy smugly tries their little deflecting shtick on them, “Could ask you the same. Why are you showing her the monsters if you ain’t gonna tell her jack about ‘em either? I was keeping her safe. You assholes were keeping her stupid.”
Max interjects, “Hey!”
“No, that’s not fair. We had to sign an NDA.” Dustin corrects, very matter of fact for a kid who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
“Yeah, me too kid. It wasn’t any secret that number six escaped. I’ve had those assholes watchin’ over my shoulder for years and I didn’t even do anythin’.” Billy feels like he’s having a trauma competition with a bunch of middle schoolers, and he hates it. His tone is harsh as he demands, “Which brings us into, what the hell did you do to get caught up in all this?”
“None of your business.” Mike spits, but for the first time in the conversation, Will chimes in, “I got taken. By the demogorgon.”
“Okay. What’s that got to do with this, kid?”
“The demogorgon is what we called the big one. Before El killed it.” Lucas explains.
“Look, I don’t know who El is, but believe me when I tell you, you brats don’t know nothing. There ain’t just one of those, you know. Every last one of those annoying little fuckers like the one I just squished’ll turned into a ‘big one’.” They all look collectively defeated by that, maybe because he knows more than they do, or maybe just because they didn’t want to admit it was that bad.
But none look more ghastly than Will, who barely manages to inform them, “That’s bad. Last night, I heard them while we were trick-or-treating. They were everywhere.”
“Then we’re gonna have to do something.” Dustin declares determinedly, but Billy shuts it down right away, “No. Seriously, what the hell? All you sorry little punks are going right the fuck back home and pretending none of this never happened. If you don’t provoke ‘em, they’ll stop.”
“But they weren’t provoked when they took Will.” One of then argues, but Billys ignoring them now, turning back to a no less calm Max, “I don’t care. I ain’t doing this shit all over again. Come on, Maxine. Gotta leave your little friends to their baby ‘demogorgon’ and their world saving bullshit.”
Max scrunches her face up and argues, “Um, did you forget that I still have no idea what the hell is going on?!”
“Honestly, yeah.” Billy admits, “But s’better if you don’t ask questions. Now if you please, we gotta go.”
“No. You’re being a jerk.” Max crosses her arms and glares at him, a clear sign shes refusing to leave with him.
Billy just shrugs, “M’always a jerk. Thought you’d know that by now.”
“I do. And that’s exactly why I’m not listening to you. If my friends are going to do something, I want in on it.”
“Look what you little fuckers did.” Billy grumbles at the boys before trying to reason with his sister again, “Max. We only got fifteen minutes out of an almost half hour drive to get home. Come on.”
“This is so much bigger than that! I don’t care what your stupid dad says, I want to do something!” Her attitude gets on Billy’s nerves. That’s definitely deliberate if the spite gleaming in her cold eyes is any indication.
“You don’t even know what it is!”
“Then I deserve to find out!”
Billy sighs deeply, done doing this with a bunch of little kids in over their heads, “You know what, fine, but we’re stoppin’ at a payphone and you’re gonna be the one to tell my old man I’m takin’ you out for.. I don’t know, fucking ice cream or some shit. And if we get in trouble, I’m blaming you. Deal?”
Max smiles to herself at having gotten one over on him, “Deal. Where are we going though?”
“I dunno. Ask your nerds. S’their big fucking idea.” Billy grumbles, matching Max’s bitterness.
“We’ll have to call a meeting.”
“Will my basement work?”
“No offense, but I don’t think he’s getting past your mom.” Dustin nods towards Billy, the older boy rolling his eyes even though he’s not wrong, then offers, “My mom doesn’t like visitors. Maybe Will’s?”
“Yeah, Mrs. Byers will let anybody come over.”
“And she already knows what’s going on.”
They all nod again, and Billy rolls his eyes at them again while Lucas relays their decision to Max, “Alright, meet us at Will’s in an hour.”
“Why that long though? We’re all here right now.”
“Gives us time to cover our tracks, shitbird.” Billy hums in response to Max, stepping forward and asking, “What’s the damn address?”
This ‘meeting’ the twerps called was pretty much everyone in this hick town that knows the same dirty little secret as he does getting together in a tiny house and panicking. Billy and Max get fully interrogated like, a dozen times, once by the damned chief of police himself, all the while everyone is coming up with theories and plots and arguing. So much fucking arguing among this lot.
It gets to be too much pretty quickly, day five in this place and he’s already having to jump back into some of the worst things that ever happened to him. None of these people realize how big this is. Especially not the kids who just think it’s badass to fight monsters.
He leaves without telling anyone, or without anyone noticing among the chaos, to the back porch to light one up. There’re ashtrays all over the house he could use, but looming smoke in that cramped little kitchen wasn’t going to be any better than watching it curl upwards to the stars. So outside it was.
He leans against the wall, gaze fixing straight to what’s above him. He doesn’t notice the presence of another person until he hears them speak, startling slightly at the sound of a voice breaking the calm silence of a humid November night.
It’s Steve, sitting on a rusty and banged up glider at the opposite end on the porch, lit up just like he is. “So, uh. I guess you’re a part of this now?”
“I guess I am.”
Steve just nods and responds simply, effectively ending the conversation, “Right.”
But that’s not satisfying to Billy. He might appreciate peace more than what’s going on in that house, but he doesn’t like empty silence either. “What’re we all awkward like this for, Harrington? Spit out what you’re thinkin’.”
“I dunno, man.”
Billy frowns, prompting, “Come on. I know them gears are turnin’ over there. You've been quiet since we all got here.”
Steve looks away from him, but he does answer, “I dunno it’s just.. We’ve lost so much. People died because of this. People I knew. And I don’t like that anyone else is involved I guess.”
Billy scoffs, “Even me? You don’t even know me other than the asshole you met at the party last night.”
“So? What do you mean even you? I don’t want anyone anywhere near those fucking monsters. Could be my worst enemy and I’d still save them. I’d protect anyone from those things.” The haunted look behind his eyes, which seem so tired the longer Billy looks, tells Billy everything he needs to know.
He doesn’t mean to sound so soft when he asks, “What makes you so confident you can? Save ‘em I mean.”
“I fought a demogorgon myself. Well, not really by myself. Nancy and Jonathan were there. But I took a nail bat to its fucking face. Like hell I’d just let one of those things get anyone. Even you.” Steve
Billy flicks away his burnt out cigarette, sitting next to Steve on the old glider. “That’s real touching H, but I ain’t letting nobody sacrifice themselves for me. Need I remind you I’ve fought these assholes too.”
“But you told the kids you didn’t. Said it was all your friend.” Steve looks at him, sort of doubtful, but Billy blows off the remark, “No shit Sherlock. I ain’t airing all my business to any nosy brats like them.”
“I get that, but.. “ Hesitantly, he clarifies, “Is.. your friend, you know, even real?”
Billy must look at him like he grew a second head, “Shit, man, you think I’m one of those freaky experiments? No way. ‘Course he was real.”
“Oh. You said ‘was.’ Does that mean...” Steve’s voice trails off, sparing him hearing the words out loud.
“Don’t know. He got caught about two years back. Haven’t heard from him since. They might’a brought ‘im back here, they might’a killed him. I dunno.” Billy shrugs, picking at his nails while he talks so he doesn’t have to acknowledge Steve, or the fact that he’s even admitting this shit to him, “That’s why we’re here in Hawkins though. Susan’s got family over in Hope and a little ways up by Indie, so I suggested Hawkins. Just to come see where he came from. Get some closure I guess.”
“Guess he was really important to you then?” Steve smiles softly, but Billy only sighs through his nose, “You got no idea, Harrington.”
“Well, for what it’s worth, I’m sorry. I’m sure you’ll meet someone like him again.” He offers.
Somehow that sentiment immediately sets Billy on edge though, something about his tone implying that he knows, knows him and six were more than just friends, and Billy really doesn’t want to face that kind of monster tonight. He snaps, suddenly defensive, “What the hell’s that s’posed to mean?”
Steve’s face falls a little, evidently surprised by how upset Billy is, and he tries to fix it, “Oh I just thought that, the way you talked about him- and you look so sad when you do- that he was, you know, special to you.”
“So what? You gonna leave me to the monsters or some shit for that?” Billy growls, quickly warranting more defense from Steve, “What? No way. No I.. I get it, Billy. I do. More than you probably think I do.”
Billy half nods, his shoulders untensing as he slowly recognizes Steve’s genuinity. He mumbles eventually, working through what he needs to in his head to be comfortable talking openly with him again, “Didn’t expect to be getting relationship counseling too. That your assignment on the team, mister romance expert?”
“Shut up. You’ve never seen me swing a bat before.”
“Oh believe me, I cannot wait to.”
Steve’s smile returns, something Billy is personally glad for, though he might not be ready for that realization yet. He bumps their shoulders together, to hold Billy's attention and let him know he’s genuine, “Still, in all seriousness man, I hope you can find someone else like that for you. I know it’s not really easy pickings around here.”
This time, Billy’s tone is light, his features soft and vulnerable for the boy next to him, for the way he makes him feel less weighed down, less alone in this, “You got no idea, Harrington.”

You’re starting to think that coming to North Carolina for the summer wasn’t as fun as you remembered.
The water touched your fingertips as you leaned away from the boat, sticking your hand out to dip it into the cold water. It was too humid for you, for starters. You were used to the colder weather of Boston and often found yourself in long sleeves and jeans with boots with an extra sweater in your car. When it got warm, a pair of leggings and a t-shirt sufficed. North Carolina’s outer banks required swimming suits, shorts, and see-through shirts in order to avoid overheating. That wasn’t exactly your style.
Your parents insisted on having you do something with your summer instead of lounging around and hanging out with people you’d see on a daily basis during the school year. There wasn’t much to do here other than drink and help your relatives on the boat with their fishing company, and the idea of working for free didn’t seem so amazing as it did when you were a child. This was the first summer you’d be spending in the outer banks for the entirety. While you and your parents travelled here for a few weeks, you were the only one staying behind until it was time to go back for school.
In all honesty, you hadn’t recalled much about the place nor the people who lived here. You were aware of the “Kooks” and “Pogues,” and the unofficial war raging between the two groups. What you gathered was that your family lived civilly between the two, not quite in either territory. If you weren’t mistaken, you were welcomed on either side of the island without drawing too much attention to yourself.
Kiara, or Kie, who was your childhood best friend, was the only person you were even remotely close to, and that was overstating it. She resembled the summer camp friend who you barely spoke to until it was time to go away for summer camp. She lived in Figure Eight but hung with the Pogue crowd, from what you understood.
You recalled meeting her for the first time at age eleven, the first time your family had made it a tradition to travel to North Carolina. Your family had wandered to The Wreck, the restaurant her family owned, and became friends because you were the only child in the building and her father had forced her to escape from her shell of a bedroom and spend some time outside. Eleven-year-old you was ecstatic to find another person to spend your summers with, and thus a friendship was born.
“Y/N, you okay there?” your uncle had asked. Pulling yourself out of your daydreams, you whipped your head back and wiped your hand on your shorts.
“I’m fine, Uncle Jim. Just thinking, is all,” you replied. Uncle Jim laughed and pulled the rope from out of the water and asked you to open the ice bin for him to put the fresh fish he had caught.
“Special order for the Camerons,” he explained. “Ward offered to pay me double if we could have this in by this afternoon.”
“So that’s why you pulled me out of bed so early,” you teased. “Mom and dad just left and you’re already putting me to work.”
You closed the ice chest and watched as Uncle Jim put away the cage neatly in the back before wiping his hands on a white cloth towel.
“You know this job like the back of your hand. Might as well put you to good use.”
“Yeah,” you said, sighing. “It’s weird being here without them.”
“Good weird or bad weird?”
You shrugged. “It’s just different.”
“I know you wanted to spend your summer in Boston, but your Aunt Camille and I are happy you’re staying until September.” You smiled and gave him a side hug.
“Yeah, I’m happy to see you two. It’s just that I’m growing up and want to spend time with my friends before we all leave to college, you know?” Uncle Jim started to steer the boat top the main land and nodded.
“I hear ya. Mind dropping the fish off at the Cameron residence after I clean it up?”
You shook your head and watched as the island grew bigger as the boat approached the dock. When Uncle Jim docked the boat, you jumped out and told him you’d be getting a bite at The Wreck, hoping to see if Kiara happened to be working. The door chimed and you could see a few people seated at tables with she was preparing smoothies behind the juice bar.
“You always look like you’re thinking so deeply,” you said, taking a seat at the bar.
Kiara looked up and dropped the banana she was holding and wiped her hand on a towel, the biggest smile painting her lips as she ran behind the bar to embrace you. You laughed and reciprocated, giving her a gentle squeeze as she held you in a near lockdown.
“Two years, Y/N. It’s been two very long years,” she said.
“I wish I could’ve stayed longer last summer,” you said. “My grandpa called us to say my grandma had broken her hip and we flew out the next morning.”
“Is she okay?” she asked.
You nodded. “I think he was just scared but it was probably for the best that we went back home.”
“So I hear you’ll be here for the whole summer, right? I heard our dads talking last night.”
“I can’t tell whether I’m excited about that or not. Happy to be here with you but not happy about working on a fishing boat. You know how sensitive my stomach is.” Kiara laughed and walked back behind the bar, resuming making the smoothie she had halted to welcome you.
“Don’t I know it. Well, when you and I aren’t working we can hang out and I can introduce you to my friends,” she said. “I think you’d really like them.”
“God, I hope so. I’m gonna need friends if I’m going to be here for three months.”
“John B’s kind of like our ring leader,” she explained before turning the blender on. She poured the drink and continued. “He’s kind of like you. A little mischievous but he’s keen for leadership. Pope’s the smart aleck. He knows everything about anything and overthinks when we do something spontaneous.” Kiara gave you a look.
“That’s because my parents were always here!” you said in mock defense, raising your hands.
Kiara laughed. “Then there’s Sarah, who you met before. She’s cool though, not like her Kook friends. We weren’t friends before you left. Then there’s JJ. He’s kind of all over the place and there’s not really a way I can describe him. You just have to experience him for yourself.”
“As long as I have a fun summer without getting in trouble, I think I’ll be fine,” you said.
“Smoothie?” Kiara asked. You nodded and took out your wallet, but she shook her head.
“I’m pretty sure my dad would bite my head off if you paid for anything here,” she said. “Your mom did help advertise for us.”
“How about a tip,” you said, putting a five dollar bill into a glass jar. Kiara rolled her eyes but grinned.
“The Pogues and I are gonna hang out on Pope’s boat, if you wanna come. We’re just gonna hang out and eat, probably.”
“I’ll have to ask my uncle but I’m sure he’ll be fine with it,” you said, taking a sip of your smoothie.
“It really was nice getting to see you again,” Kiara said. “I think you’re probably my only other girl friend, aside from Sarah. God knows a girl needs her time away from testosterone.”
“I’m gonna be at Sarah’s later this afternoon to drop off some fish. I think her dad paid a lot of money for it, and I will never understand that.”
She laughed. “Well with that kind of money, I guess you wouldn’t need to think twice about paying for fish.”
You hopped off of the seat and waved goodbye before heading home.
***
When the sky turned into a shade of deep orange, you double checked to see that your phone was fully charged before slipping on your shoes and grabbing a blanket plus the bag of snacks you had purchased earlier that day. You waved at Uncle Jim and Aunt Camille, promising them you’d be safe with Kiara before you locked the front door and slipped the keys into your bag.
From your recollection, Pope’s boat was fairly large and Kiara told you it would have lights strung up so it wouldn’t be too hard to miss. The dock was quiet with the exception of fireflies buzzing in the air and the faint sound of laughter in the distance.
You could see a group of boys and Kiara lounging around with beer in their hands and you were unsure of how to approach them. Luckily, Kiara saw you in the corner of her eye and rushed down to greet you.
“Thank God you’re here,” she said. “Boys are annoying and I need some company. Here, let me get your bag.”
You handed her the bag and climbed onto the boat, aware of three pairs of eyes following you. Suddenly feeling a little self conscious about yourself, you waved awkwardly at the three boys.
“Don’t be weird, you guys,” Kiara said, rolling her eyes. “That’s Pope. Brains of our operation. You two are more alike, I think.”
“Nice to meet you,” he said, tipping his hat at you.
“That’s John B,” she said as you waved at him. “He’s kinda of like you when you start talking about something you’re passionate about.” You began to blush at how Kiara was introducing you to her friends.
“Any friend of Kiaras is a friend to us,” he said, grinning.
“And that’s JJ,” she said, pointing at the blonde who was too busy looking at you to speak. “He’s, well, JJ.”
He scoffed. “These two get great introductions and I get ‘that’s JJ’?” he asked, using his fingers as faux quotation marks. Kiara shrugged.
“I happen to think I’m great, thank you very much,” he said sarcastically before winking at you. You gave him a soft grin and sat next to her, unfolding the blanket and placing yourself on it.
“And this is Y/N Y/L/N, probably the smartest one out of the five of us. She’s from Boston and comes here every summer with her parents.”
“It’s usually for a week or two to visit my aunt and uncle but this time I’m spending the entire summer here,” you explained.
“Why’s that?” asked Pope.
“My parents thought it would be good to not spend my time indoors and God knows my uncle will put me to work.”
“She’s Jim’s niece,” Kiara said.
John B’s eyes lit up. “Jim’s niece! That’s right, I remember he said you were coming to work for him this summer. He’s such a legend. How he and Camille live between us and the Kooks is beyond me. Love that guy.”
You beamed, opening a bag of popcorn. “He’s pretty great, isn’t he?”
“So how’d you and Kiara meet?” JJ asked.
“We were the only kids in The Wreck when it first opened,” she said. “Dad forced me to go outside and Y/N’s parents forced her to do the same and we just clicked.”
“So what’s Boston like?” John B asked.
“Jesus, one question at a time,” Kiara said, rolling her eyes.
“Cold, for the most part. I live on the edge of the city so I’m between suburban area and the metropolitan. It’s kind of the best of both worlds.”
“Outer banks is a wake up call,” Pope joked.
“It’s really different than what I’m used to, but this is my sixth summer out here,” you said. “And this time I came prepared with the right clothes.”
Kiara bursted out laughing. “When we were twelve, she insisted on bringing sweaters and jeans because that’s all she owned. For two weeks straight she had to borrow my clothes.” The boys chuckled.
“I’m not all that used to wearing shorts,” you said, gesturing to your clothes. “But I guess I like to lounge around in oversized shirts, so it’s a win-win.”
“Beer?” JJ asked, holding a bottle. You shook your head.
“Nah, I’m good. But thank you for offering.” He quirked his eyebrow but put it back in the cooler.
“Damn, I’ve never been off of this damn island,” said John B. “Let alone a big city.”
“It’s great, honestly,” you began, “I feel like I’m unimportant and that leaves me with so much room to grow. Nobody has any real expectations from me because I’m just another stranger. And I’m starting to sound like a cliche.”
JJ chuckled and shook his head. “Not a cliche. It’s nice to get to know someone who’s not from here.”
“God knows the Kooks aren’t welcoming,” said Pope. “But never mind them.”
“Sarah’s not coming,” Kiara said, looking up from her phone. “Said she’s too tired to make the ‘treacherous’ walk.”
“Bummer,” you said, pouting. “I haven’t seen her in so long. She wasn’t at the house when I went earlier.”
“I’m sure you’ll see her soon,” said Kiara.
“Oh goodness,” you said, shivering. “I didn’t think it would be cold tonight.” You rubbed your upper arms with your palms and tried to move to feel some friction.
“Take my jacket,” JJ said, reaching behind him to grab his discarded windbreaker.
“Thanks,” you said softly, a little confused that a stranger would let you wear his jacket.
“Damn, JJ. You’ve got broad shoulders,” John B joked, looking at how big the jacket was compared to you.
“It’s two sizes bigger than I am,” JJ said said, taking a swig of his beer.
“It’s perfect,” you said, looking between JJ and John B. “Thanks, JJ.”
“Don’t mention it,” he said. You looked away to speak to Kiara and didn’t notice JJ checking you out with the jacket you had put on.
“So you think Y/N’s attractive,” Pope said, leaning in and whispering.
“Pfft, what?” JJ asked, shaking his head.
“C’mon, dude. It’s just a matter of time before you and her, you know,” he said, making a crude gesture before laughing. JJ shoved him and laughed along.
“It’s not like that,” he said. Pope raised his eyebrow.
“Oh?”
“It’s not like that either! Jeez, Pope.”
“Whatever you say, man,” said Pope, leaning back and opening another bottle of beer.
An hour had flown by and you yawned, the entire group silently understanding that it was probably too late to stay up. Pope had left ten minutes earlier after his dad had called and promised to see the rest of you tomorrow.
“This was fun,” you said to Kiara, John B, and JJ. “I really like you guys.”
“But I’m the best,” said Kiara, striking a pose that made you laugh.
“And no one’s taking that title away from you,” you replied. You folded the blanket and began to walk off of the boat with JJ offering his hand for you to step down. You took it and noticed how unusually soft they were. You started to walk back to your house before abruptly turning around.
“Oh, JJ! Wait, let me give you your jacket back,” you said, dropping the bag you were carrying. JJ laughed and shook his head.
“Keep it for tonight, Boston. It’ll give me a reason to see you tomorrow,” JJ said. You grinned at the nickname.
“Okay,” you said, picking up the bag you dropped. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.” JJ smiled. You could grow to like seeing his smile.
He winked. “See you tomorrow, Boston.”
***
As the weeks went by, you starting to feel disappointed whenever you thought about going back to Boston, which meant leaving your new friends behind. All the adventures you had raked up were memorable ones and it would feel weird not seeing the four rambunctious teens nearly every day.
It was a hot Thursday morning when you sat on the dock. Uncle Jim had given you the rest of the day off after helping him load his cargo, offering to make the rounds that afternoon if you were willing to go to the grocery store to pick up ingredients for that night’s dinner.
You couldn’t help but think about JJ and all the times you two had been near one another. Kiara had made an innocuous comment the prior night before you left her house about how he was much gentler when he was around you and didn’t seem to be as loud as he was when you were there. JJ, she said, was always so outspoken but whenever you were near, it was like he was censoring himself.
You were sure Kiara didn’t mean anything bad by it, but you weren’t really sure how to interpret what she said. You and JJ, aside from Kiara, had hung out the most since you met. You two spent the afternoon together at The Wreck the day after you met him, partially to give him his jacket back and partially waiting for Kiara’s shift to be over. You could feel yourself letting loose and confessed to feeling extremely nervous and self-conscious about meeting Kiara’s friends. JJ reassured you that he (and the others in the gang, of course) really liked you.
He would accompany you home and save you a seat next to him. He’d hold your bag and wait for you if the gang was running ahead. JJ would volunteer to come get you if you weren’t answering your phone and he’d make trips to visit you while you were helping Uncle Jim at work.
If you were being honest, you would be lying to yourself if you said you hadn’t developed feelings for him. It was minor and fleeting, but it was there. The blonde made you blush without having to try too hard and you were sure Kiara knew, but she never said anything. JJ was attentive to you and let you speak when you felt your voice be drowned by someone else.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when you heard running footsteps on the dock, only to turn around and see JJ running towards you. He peeled his shirt off and jumped past you and landed in the water, splashing you in the process.
“JJ, what the hell!” you yelled as he came up for air. He shook his head and wiped his face, grinning at your surprised reaction.
“What a morning, huh?” he said, swimming closer to you. Your legs dangled in the water and he came up, pushing his body upwards to let his arms rest on your lap. “You thinking too hard again, Boston?”
Boston. There was that nickname again. You think you hid your blush pretty well.
“You know I’m always thinking,” you replied.
“Someday I’m gonna get inside your head and know everything you think about when you disappear,” he said. “I’m sure you have a lot of good stories to tell.”
“Maybe so,” you teased. “I was just thinking about how I have a month and a half left before going back home.”
“Don’t think about that,” he said, pouting slightly. “I’ll - we’ll - miss you tons. It won’t be the same until you come back.”
You laughed. “I wish I could bring you guys back with me. I don’t have that many friends I consider close.”
“And you consider us your close friends?”
“I might even say my best friends,” you said with a smile.
“Well, well, well. I’m honored to hear that, Boston. Truly.”
“Why’d you jump into the water, anyway?” you asked.
He shrugged. “It’s a hot morning and the sun is shining. Plus, I got to scare you, which was pretty priceless.” You shoved him back into the water and laughed as he came up with a feigned surprised expression.
“Oh, come on! It was hilarious.”
“You’re so mean to me, JJ,” you said, sticking your tongue out.
“Why don’t you join me? The water’s cool and it’s hot out.”
“I think I’m good from where I’m sitting,” you said. JJ swam closer and caressed your legs before trailing his fingers to your lap, resting his chin on your knee.
“Please?”
It was times like this when you were grateful you developed a habit of putting a swimsuit underneath your clothing. You stood up from your spot and took off your shirt and shorts, slowly dipping in the water beside him.
“Okay, you’re right,” you confessed. “Very refreshing.”
JJ swam closer to you and smiled, finding your hand and pulling it above the water to give it a kiss.
“I’m never wrong, Boston.”
You rolled your eyes. “Okay, keep telling yourself that.”
JJ was quiet for a moment. “You’re so innocent.”
You raised your eyebrow. “Oh? How so?”
“I don’t know. You have a purity to you. Maybe it’s Boston or maybe it’s just that you’re better than us and the Kooks combined.”
“Well, I’m definitely better than the Kooks,” you said. JJ chuckled. He pulled you closer to him to the point where your chests were almost touching.
“I just mean that I don’t know how to act when I’m around you. Usually I’m reckless and an idiot, but I’m not that way when you’re around.”
You frowned. “I don’t ever want you to be anyone but yourself around me, JJ.”
He shook his head. “I don’t think it’s that. I think you pull this calmness out of me. I don’t think I’m not being myself when you’re around. I just think that I’m much more of a person than ‘reckless’ JJ who gets into too much trouble.
“What I’m trying to say is,” he began with a deep breath, “I like you. As in, more than a friend. John B and Pope have been teasing me about it all summer but I never took it seriously until you talked that Kook’s ear off about not being a racist and sexist piece of shit.” You took a moment to recall and laugh at the memory. “There’s never a moment where I don’t want to be with you or tell you things. I’ve never felt this way with anyone before, honestly.”
“JJ,” you said softly, your hand giving his bicep a squeeze in reassurance. “You know, I’ve been overthinking these past few weeks. Last night, Kie said something about how you were so aware when I’m around and how you’re less reckless and I didn’t know what to make of it.”
“I just,” said JJ, “I like you a lot. More than I thought I did.”
You looked into his gaze and his arm wrapped itself around your waist, pulling you closer so your chests were touching. The sound of the waves was the only noise in the vicinity and the sun made JJ’s eyes look more impeccable than they already were. His lips were plump and you noticed he had stolen a glance down to yours, squeezing the small of your back as if to ask for silent permission. You inched your way closer and he followed suit until his lips had landed gracefully on yours as if it had belonged there all along.
His skin was hot under the sun and the water around you felt like it moved to push you two closer together. JJ let this kiss be a simple one, unlike the other girls he had been with before. His eyes remained closed until he pulled away and looked to see you in your entirety. You did nothing but smile and bite your lip, reaching out to kiss him once more.
“I like you too,” you said. “And I like kissing you.” JJ laughed and leaned in to kiss you a third time.
“You’re real cute, Boston,” he replied.
“Do you think we could go and get some sandwiches from The Wreck? All this swimming and all this kissing has me starved.” You shared a laugh before pushing yourselves out of the water and hoped the sun was hot enough dry you both before you reached the restaurant.
You were already counting down the days you would be coming back to the outer banks.

Merry Band of Misfits
Fandom: Alex Rider/ Hawaii Five-0
Summary: After an incident, child services questions whether Steve is truly a good fit for Alex. Steve won’t stand for Alex being taken from him of course, and Danny is right there with him.
A/N: This started out as a little angst, a little comfort, and a whole lot of cheese, but somehow it turned into a little cheese, probably a lot of inaccuracy of how the system works, and a ton of angst sprinkled with comfort. What ya gonna do, tho, lol.
. . . .
They were still chasing their suspect through the crowded outdoor market when Steve’s phone vibrated incessantly in his pocket for the third time. His mind immediately jumped to Alex, wondering if he was okay, but he couldn’t exactly answer at the moment. Ready to be done with this chase and praying the call wasn’t anything too serious, he jumped up onto a low, narrow wall. Now moving faster than the man attempting to push his way through, it took less than a minute to catch up. Launching himself off the wall, Steve tackled the man to the ground.
“Oh, just give it up,” Steve grumbled at the still-struggling man underneath him as he wrenched the suspect’s arms around and zip-tied his wrists together. He pulled the man back up to his feet as the rest of his team finally caught up. “Book ‘im, Danno.”
After they had pushed their way back out of the market, Steve finally fished his phone out of his pocket.
3 Missed Calls - Kapi’olani Medical Center
He stopped dead in his tracks, heart in his throat, as he played back the voicemail they’d left for him. It didn’t give him much to go on, unfortunately, but since the woman had introduced herself as a child advocate with the hospital, that didn’t bode well. He didn’t hesitate to call her back.
The other end rang twice before the same woman who left the message, Alana Kelekolio, answered.
“Yeah, this is Commander McGarrett. You called about Alex? Is everything okay?”
. . .
As Steve stormed into the office, he didn’t fail to notice the two people in the room who were clearly not medical staff, but for the moment he ignored them, opting to head straight for Alex, who had stood up as he had entered.
“Hey, you all right, kiddo?” Steve asked, wrapping him in a hug.
“Shoulder hurts, but otherwise I’m fine.”
Steve snorted. “Yeah, that happens when you dislocate it. What happened?”
Alex shrugged his good shoulder. “Got my feet tangled up with Nathan’s fighting for the ball during practice and fell.”
“Yeah, you might need to spice that story up a bit before you tell it to anyone else.” That comment finally pulled a small smile out of the teen as Steve turned to address the other two people in the room. “So we’re good to go then?”
“Not quite, Commander.” A man Steve vaguely recognized as Alex’s social worker stood up and stepped forward. He’d been by the house a handful of times, but Steve honestly had a hard time remembering his name; he didn’t leave much of an impression. Robert something, maybe? Robert Kent? That sounded right. “If I could have a word with you alone?” he asked, gesturing towards the door.
Once they had stepped out and the door had clicked shut behind them, Robert continued. “This is negligence at best, Commander.”
“What do you mean?”
“You are Alex’s only emergency contact.”
“Yes, and here I am. So what?”
“The only reason I am here is because the hospital couldn’t get a hold of you.”
“I was literally in the middle of chasing a human trafficker through Chinatown. What was I supposed to do, huh? Ask him to wait while I answer my phone?”
“And that is exactly why Alex’s case is going to be reviewed.”
For the second time in an hour, Steve felt his heart jump into his throat. “What does that mean?”
“It means I think someone was a little quick to hand you Alex’s custody, so there is going to be some careful thought as to if this is really the best situation for Alex.”
. . .
“I could have punched him, Danny. Was it oversight on my part? Yes, I’ll admit that it was. Initially I wasn’t sure who else to put down since chances are if they can’t get me then they wouldn’t be able to get any of you guys either. So I put it off -- a little too long evidently -- but reviewing his case over that?”
Danny sat quietly, watching as Steve paced, waiting for him to finish.
“I mean, isn’t that a little extreme? Especially coming from a guy who talks to Alex for maybe ten minutes in a month. He doesn’t know anything.” Steve stopped with his back to Danny, a long sigh escaping. “He’s finally starting to settle a little and they’re about to take all of the progress he’s made away.”
“That does seem like a little much,” Danny sighed when it seemed like Steve was done. “Especially for something that’s a quick fix. Did he tell you how soon they’d make a decision?”
“End of the week.” Steve plopped down into one of the chairs opposite Danny’s desk, rubbing wearily at his temples.
Danny nodded. “Okay. I’m assuming you plan to fight this if they decide to pull him, right?”
“You have to ask?”
“If it comes to that, you know I’ll do whatever I can to help. I’ve got your back, babe.”
Some of the tension bled out of Steve’s shoulders at Danny’s words. “I know. I know you do. Thank you.”
. . .
Alex stopped at the end of the driveway, staring at Steve’s truck with a frown. They’d left at the same time that morning so Alex knew Steve had driven himself to work. If it was here, that meant Steve was home already -- very, very early.
Which likely meant something was wrong.
He parked his bike next to the garage and went inside to find Steve sitting on the couch, elbows on his knees, chin resting on his clasped hands, face pensive.
Steve dropped his hands, face softening slightly, when he noticed Alex. “Hey.”
“You’re home early, which is never a good thing. What’s wrong?”
Sighing deeply, Steve motioned to the spot next to him on the couch.
Alex dropped his bag onto the stairs and sat down.
“I already tipped you off, so I’ll just get right to the point. You -uh, you remember on Tuesday when you got hurt at practice?”
“Hard to forget. Go on.”
“The hospital called in child services when they couldn’t get me right away, and that made them...less than happy.”
Alex’s stomach dropped. When he spoke, the words didn’t feel like they were coming from his own mouth. “They’re taking me away, aren’t they?”
Steve sighed again. “They want to, but I’m not letting that happen without a fight. I told you from the start that I’m not gonna leave you on your own, and I meant it -- I still mean it. I have a hearing with a family court judge in a few weeks to decide the final verdict.” He wrapped an arm around Alex’s shoulders, and the teen easily melted into his side. “I’m not going to let them take you, Alex. Okay?”
“Okay. I trust you.”
As true as those words were, they still felt hollow on Alex’s tongue. He wanted to believe them but he knew it wasn’t as simply as that either. No matter how much faith he had in Steve, they could still take him away.
And there would be nothing either of them could do about it.
. . .
The hearing was not going well and Danny knew it. Robert Kent seemed bent on removing Alex from Steve’s custody and was bringing up every even slightly questionable thing Steve had ever done, whether it related to Alex’s care or not.
And Danny was done listening.
“And furthermore, it was clearly negligence on Commander McGarrett’s part in failing to list a second emergency contact.”
“Your Honor, I’m sorry to interrupt, but to be honest, none of this is in any way relevant.”
“Detective Williams, this is not your forum, and I do believe I am perfectly capable of determining what is relevant and what is not.”
“Yes, I am aware of that, and I apologize -- I really do -- but if I may, I have something I need to say.”
“I do believe you will already be giving a statement.”
“I will be, but this has nothing to do with what I’ve planned to say, your Honor.”
The judge was silent for a moment before saying. “I’ll allow it, but keep it brief, Detective.”
“Your Honor, with all due respect, if you allow Alex to be taken from Commander McGarrett’s custody based only on what you have heard so far, then you will be making a huge mistake.” He paused, taking a deep breath. Steve was either going to hug him or kill him for this later. “I’ve known Commander McGarrett for a long time now, and I will be the first to admit that I hated his guts back then. I thought he was completely irresponsible and reckless. But here’s the thing: he’s downright terrible at first impressions. So forget the bad first impression you’ve been given here so far today because what you are probably thinking is exactly what I thought, too. But the fact of the matter is, your Honor, that I trust him with my life and, moreover, with the lives of my own children.
“See, first impressions don’t tell you everything about a person. My first impression didn’t tell me that his guy was going to give me a place to belong in a place that I hated and a family in a place where I had no one.
“If the other members of Five-0 could be here right now, I know they’d say the same because Steve McGarrett likes to fix broken things. He has again and again taken the outcasts and the misfits and given them a place to call home. All of us at Five-0 are a family.
“And Alex is part of that family now, too.”
Danny paused; he’d been told to keep it short and he was sure he’d already talked longer than the judge wanted, but he hadn’t been stopped yet either.
“Right now, Mr Kent is trying to tell you from a collection of ‘first impressions’ why Commander McGarrett is unfit to be a parent, so allow me to tell you why Mr Kent is dead wrong.
“In the past eleven months, Alex has gone from withdrawn and emotionally volatile to outgoing and emotionally stable -- as stable as any teenager can be, anyway. In the first three months alone Alex was diagnosed with PTSD, properly medicated to help mitigate symptoms, and started in therapy -- all things that should have happened much sooner but were easily overlooked as he was written off as a ‘problem child’ and quickly passed around between homes like he didn’t matter -- and maybe to those people, he didn’t.
“But therein lies the fundamental differences between everyone else Alex has been placed with and Commander McGarrett: instead of calling Alex the problem, he addressed the problems Alex had, and -- maybe even more importantly -- he has never once even considered giving up on Alex.
“Commander McGarrett may not be the perfect parent, but he is a good one, and he does genuinely care about Alex’s well-being and wants the best for him. One oversight that is easily corrected -- because make no mistake, that’s the real reason why we’re here right now -- should not detract from all the good that has already happened -- and it has happened, your Honor; I’ve witnessed it myself. And that is how I can say with absolute confidence, your Honor, that if you allow this to happen, you will be making a huge mistake.”
Danny sat back down in the eerily quiet courtroom.
The judge cleared her throat. “Thank you, Detective Williams. Your words will be taken into consideration.”
. . .
Alex couldn’t concentrate, plain and simple. Steve had offered to let him stay home from school but Alex had declined, thinking it would be a good distraction. But it wasn’t, and he was seriously considering going to the office and signing himself out for the day. His anxiety was the worst it had been in months so he doubted they would make him stay, but would it really be any better if he went home? He doubted it. So at school he would stay for the long four hours that still remained.
Maybe.
He really wasn’t sold on the idea.
(But, again, being home alone probably wasn’t the best idea either, but those were his only two options.)
He forced himself to take a couple of deep breaths; having a panic attack in the middle of World History would not do.
Somehow he made it through the rest of the class and to lunch, skipping the line and heading straight to his usual table, folding his arms and resting his head on them. Maybe if he could close his eyes and focus on his breathing for a minute then his stomach would dislodge itself from his throat and go back to where it belonged.
“Alex?” The clunk of a tray against the table and the thud of a bad against the floor accompanied the voice.
“Hm?”
“Maybe you should go home, man.”
“‘M fine.”
“Yup. That’s very convincing.”
Alex took a breath and raised his head just enough to glare at his friend. “I’m fine, Koa.”
“Ya know, I actually have to agree with him for once,” Nathan said as he slid into the seat next Koa. “You really don’t look good, man.”
Letting his head thump back down, Alex muttered, “It’s just anxiety. It’s nothing.”
A pause, then, “Alex. Go home. I’m serious.”
Alex knew they were right, but He pushed himself all the way up, meeting their concerned gazes. “I really don’t want to be alone so school is the better option right now.”
Koa shrugged. “Then call Commander McGarrett.”
“Can’t. He’s in court right now, and I don’t know when he’ll be out.”
As if on cue, his phone vibrated in his pocket with a text from Steve.
Steve McGarrett: Hearing’s over. They’ll call with the decision sometime this evening. Are you doing okay?
Alex sighed in relief; Steve always seemed to know when he was struggling and Alex didn’t feel guilty about admitting it if someone asked first as opposed to him just saying it.
Alex Rider: Honestly not really. Steve McGarrett: Omw
“He’s coming to get you, isn’t he.” It wasn’t a question.
Alex nodded. “Yeah. I’m just...gonna head to the office then. See you guys tomorrow.”
“No, you won’t.”
Alex glanced at Nathan as he stood up. “What?”
“No school? It’s Thanksgiving.”
Alex stared blankly for a moment. “Oh. Right. Forgot. Uhm, Monday -- I’ll see you Monday.” I hope.
By the time he got to the office, Steve was already there, still in his dress blues from the hearing, and it took Alex a minute to realize that Steve must have been headed this way to get him already even as he’d texted.
“So how’d it go?” Alex asked as he settled into the passenger seat of the truck.
Steve let out a heavy sigh. “Well, not as good as I’d been hoping, honestly, but not horribly either. We’ve still got a shot.” He paused, shifting into drive and pulling away from the curb. “So what would you like to do with this suddenly school-free afternoon?”
Alex shrugged, worrying his bottom lip. His anxiety was still through the roof so he honestly didn’t want to do much of anything.
“Did you eat?”
Busted. Once again, Steve always seemed to know. Swallowing around the lump in his throat, he shook his head, stomach still rather queasy.
Expression full of understanding, Steve nodded once. “Okay. I want you to try when we get home though, all right?”
Alex took a deep breath. “No promises on success.”
“That’s okay. Just try.”
“Okay.”
The rest of the ride was relatively silent apart from Steve assuring him that he didn’t need to worry about school or homework, that they would just relax until they had news.
Once home, Alex changed from jeans to sweats; no need to be anything less than completely comfortable all things considered. Alex sat down on his bed, listening as Steve went down to the kitchen to find something for them both to eat. Simultaneously exhausted and restless, he honestly didn’t know if he’d rather take a nap or run a marathon. His breathing hitched, and he tried to push everything he was feeling into nice, neat compartments. He knew he shouldn’t, that he should just get it over with and deal with it now, but if he could shove it away for only a few more hours, then he wouldn’t have to deal with it at all. (Because in a few hours they would get word that he was staying -- he would be -- because if he wasn’t, he didn’t know what he would do.)
Calloused hands gently pried his apart, and as Alex’s eyes slowly focused on where Steve knelt in front of him, he wondered when the man had even come in. How long had he been sitting here that Steve had had to come up to get him?
“Oh, kid.”
Those two words were all it took to open the floodgates. An ugly, hysterical sob tore out at the same time Steve pulled him into a hug.
Alex wasn’t sure how long they sat there before the knot in his chest eased and the sobs pettered off into hiccups, but he did know that he didn’t feel any better. Wasn’t that what was supposed to happen? But he didn’t, exhaustion settling even thicker in his bones, his stomach still uncomfortably lodged in his throat. If anything, he only felt worse.
“How are you feeling, buddy? Any better?”
“Not really.”
Steve hummed in thought before he said, “Why don’t you come lay down on the couch and watch a movie with me, and we can go from there. Okay?”
He didn’t want to move, but lying down definitely sounded nice. “‘Kay.”
Steve took one corner of the couch, and Alex curled up next to him, head on the man’s thigh. Some Disney movie played quietly on the TV, but Alex wasn’t really paying attention. Time seemed to drag on; it could have been hours or only minutes before Steve asked if he was feeling up to eating. Alex could only shake his head in response and, strangely enough, Steve didn’t push it.
Then finally -- finally -- Steve’s phone vibrated with an incoming call. Glancing at the ID displayed on the screen, Steve murmured, “This is them,” before picking up. “Steve McGarrett.”
Alex sat up. He had thought he’d feel something when the call came, but all he felt was numb.
After a moment, Steve said, “Thank you very much for calling.” As soon as he’d set his phone down, he turned to Alex and wrapped him in a hug. “Remind me to thank Danny by picking up his tab at Side Street next time. Looks like you’re stuck with me for a little bit longer, buddy.”
It took a moment longer than it should have for the meaning of those words to register, but when they did, Alex almost felt like crying all over again. Instead he tightened his grip and breathed for what felt like the first time in weeks. He couldn’t help but think that maybe Steve really had been telling him the truth all along, that maybe it would actually be true this time.
Maybe he really would never have to be alone again.
. . .
“So, a little birdy named Lou told me you might be needing someone as a second emergency contact for Alex,” Renee commented as she mixed up a salad at the counter. “If you haven’t figured someone else out already, you can always put me down, you know; I don’t mind.”
“Really?” Steve asked, glancing up from the pan he’d just pulled from the oven. “I hadn’t figured that out yet, so I’d really appreciate that actually.”
“Shoots, a sista beat me to it,” Kamekona said from the doorway. “I was gon’ offer, too.”
“As was I,” Max added as Steve turned the corner, carrying the turkey to the table. “Given my profession, I surmised it to be highly unlikely I would not be able to get away if called upon.”
“Great minds think alike,” Jerry piped up next. “I mean, I don’t exactly ever have anything I couldn’t step away from if you needed me, after all, and when I work with you guys I’m not really in the field for all the dangerous stuff, anyway.”
Danny laughed as he came out of the kitchen, carrying more dishes. “So, uh, you think child services will be happy now with that many numbers to choose from?”
Steve couldn’t help but chuckle. As Alex came up beside him, he threw an arm around the teen’s shoulders. “I’ve definitely got a lot to be thankful for his year, you know that? So, thank you, guys -- I mean that; it’s been quite a year and I couldn’t have done this without all of you.”
“You don’t need to thank us,” Chin replied with a smile. “We’re ohana; it’s what we do.”
“Yeah, if anything we should be thanking you,” Kono added. “None of us would be here right now without you.”
Steve looked around at the people he called family and realized that Danny had been only partially correct. He may have created a space for them all to belong, but he needed it just as much as everyone else did. They had rescued him just as much as he had rescued them.
A merry band of misfits -- maybe that was just how it was always meant to be.

pairing: jaemin x fem!reader
summary: when you’re given your dream job, what will happen to you and Jaemin?
warnings: ANGST, bad writing lmao, depression (not specifically mentioned but it’s obviously there), a shit ton of crying, jaemin being kind of an asshole ngl, mentions of hockey (only because there might be some things that don’t make sense idk maybe they do to somebody who doesn’t watch it), VERY INACCURATE INFO ON BECOMING A TRANSLATOR
notes: here’s part 2 to New Beginnings! idk how to link it lmao im sorry im really bad at this also im iffy on how this came out but at this point whatever i wrote a lot. I’m gonna try to do the bold for korean again (cuz new beginnings on the app is fucking jacked af but on the full website it looks how it’s supposed to) but like just assume that everything the OCs are saying are in Korean and whatever the Dreamies say that aren’t to English speaking people are in Korean
“Please put on your seatbelts as we will begin our descent to Los Angeles, California.”
You did as the flight attendant asked and looked out the window. The ground slowly got closer and closer, and your heart raced with excitement. Despite how you’d felt a year ago, you couldn’t wait to land and start the next chapter in your life. You could still feel the exhaustion from it being in the middle of the night in Seoul, but that was so little compared to all the emotions running through your body.
Once you were out of security, you pulled up FaceTime on your phone and called Jisung. It rang and rang, and you almost gave up when he finally answered the call. He was out of breath, as if he’d just run to get his phone. His face lit up when he saw yours.
“Y/N! You landed safely!” he said. Your parents appeared in the frame, which made you smile.
“I did! I’m heading towards pick-up now, so hopefully I’ll be on my way to the rink,” you told them.
You’d decided you wanted to be an English-Korean translator, so you had been hired as a translator for a new NHL prospect. He was born and raised in Korea, and he knew very little English, so you were going to help him during prospect camp, translating and teaching him English. You expected to be in America until September, but if he made it past both prospect and training camp, who knew what your future held?
“Oh honey, I’m so proud of you,” your mom said.
“We both are. You’re gonna do great, we know it,” your dad added.
You looked around and spotted your name on a sign that was held by a man with a driver’s cap. You told your family you had to go and hung up before walking over. He greeted you with a smile and grabbed one of your bags, heading to the parking lot. You shot a text to the boys, letting them know you’d landed. The drive to the rink didn’t take long, and you were escorted by a security guard through the hallways to an office.
“Ms. Park is here,” the security guard announced before heading back to his area.
“Y/N, it’s very nice to meet you. I’m Rob Blake, the general manager,” a very tall man in a suit said. He held his hand out to you, which you shook. “We’re very happy to have you here. Chi-won Han’s translator from last year has a new job, so we’re glad you can stay for longer.”
“Thank you, Mr. Blake. I’m very excited for this opportunity,” you stated with a wide smile. “So, where should we start?”
Mr. Blake’s assistant gave you multiple papers to sign before bringing you to get your ID made. You proudly hung it around your neck, even though your picture looked absolutely horrible (you just got off an eleven-hour flight). Then, Mr. Blake himself brought you to a conference room where the prospect, his agent, and the coaches were.
“Everyone, this is Y/N Park. She will be Chi-won’s translator.”
You bowed and said, “Han Chi-won, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Park Y/N.”
The boy bowed as well. “Thank you for flying here, Y/N. You have to idea how appreciative I am.”
You then introduced yourself to the agent and the coaches, dropping your bags to bow and shake hands. You told them about your exact role and how to contact you in case you were needed last minute. You’d been given a phone for work with everyone’s contacts in it, along with a rental car since you still had a valid driver’s license. You were then handed the keys to your apartment, which you would be sharing with Chi-won and one of the Kings’ players, Tyler Toffoli.
“Y/N, do you own any skates?” Marco Sturm, one of the assistant coaches, asked.
You shook your head. “I’m not very good at skating, but I’ll definitely do my best.”
“Have Tyler and Chi-won take you shopping for a pair. We really need you on the ice for drills.”
You translated for the hockey player when his head perked up at his name. He nodded shyly, his eyes darting to the floor. You couldn’t help but feel bad for him; he had no idea what anyone was saying, so for all he knew you could’ve been talking poorly about him. None of you would do that, but he didn’t know any better.
“Camp doesn’t officially start until tomorrow. We just wanted you to meet before then so that you can get situated. before the madness,” Mr. Blake explained.
“I appreciate that. It’s past midnight in Korea, so I’m pretty exhausted,” you replied.
“You guys are all set for today. We’ll see you bright and early tomorrow for day one.”
You turned to Chi-won and asked, “You wanna get food?”
He nodded vigorously, saying, “Tyler and his wife were making breakfast when I was called down here.”
Grabbing your bags, you said your farewells to the men before heading out, Chi-won hot on your feels. When you clicked the key fob for the rental car, a new SUV lit up. You let out a low whistle and popped the hatch, tossing your suitcases and duffel in. You and Chi-won then climbed in and decided on a local diner. The car ride was mostly silent, the radio playing softly in the background. When you walked into the restaurant, his eyes widened in fear as the waitress spoke to him. You ordered juice for the both of you and then started translating the menu with ease, watching his shoulders relax at the sound of a language he knew.
The two of you ate in silence for a couple minutes, simply enjoying your food. You checked your personal phone for any messages, but there was nothing. You weren’t surprised, though. The boys were supposed to be asleep, so you expected there to be nothing, but it still hurt to see that you hadn’t even heard from Jaemin. Then again, you probably should’ve expected as much.
“What?” Jaemin asked quietly.
You’d shown up at the dorms, wearing one of your boyfriend’s sweatshirts and a pair of shorts. Your hair was a mess from stressing out, so you had the hood up. He had to know what was going on, and you were out of time.
“I’m going back to America,” you repeated. “A major sports team contacted me last month to help one of their prospects. He doesn’t know much English, so I’ll be translating for him during camp.”
“When you do leave?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?!” You flinched at the sudden rise of his volume, the sound bouncing off the walls. There was no way the other Dreamies hadn’t heard him. There was no way the other Dreames hadn’t heard him, and you started to panic. This was definitely not how you expected this to go. “You’ve known for a month, and you’re just telling me now?!”
“I was going to tell you sooner, but since you’re working on your comeback, you’ve had to cancel dates! I didn’t have a choice but to tell you now!” you argued.
“Oh, so now it’s my fault?”
“I didn’t say that, Jaemin. I’m just explaining that there wasn’t a good time, so that’s why you aren’t finding out until the day before my flight. I’m sorry it wasn’t sooner.” Your hands were wringing in the kangaroo pocket, but it was hidden by the island in the kitchen.
“How long will you be gone?” When you didn’t answer right away, his jaw clenched. “How long, Y/N?”
Scared by his tone, you said, “I have no idea. Prospect camp is for a few days, but they’re expecting him to continue on to training camp in September.”
“Are you even coming back? What does that mean for us?”
“I don’t know, Jae!” you snapped. Your voice reverberated off the walls, and you could hear shuffling down the hall. “I don’t know.”
There was a heavy pause. He then asked, “You don’t know if you’re coming back? Or you don’t know what will happen with our relationship?”
“Both.”
“You’re very young to be a translator,” Chi-won stated, snapping you out of your thoughts.
You wiped your mouth with a napkin, giving you time to think of your answer without revealing too much. “My step-dad is from Korea. He and my mom got married when I was nine, but he and my step-brother had to stay there while my mom and I live here. We would visit whenever there was a vacation for school, so I learned it over the years.”
“Do you live in Korea now?”
“Right in Seoul. I moved after I graduated high school last year.”
Chi-won was silent after that. After you paid the bill, you plugged in the address for the apartment building and made the quick drive over. Parking along the street, Chi-won grabbed your bags for you and led you to the apartment. You used the key to unlock the door and walked inside. A man and a woman looked over at the same time from the kitchen and smiled.
“You must be the translator. I’m Tyler, and this is my wife, Cat,” the man introduced.
You shook their hands and said, “It’s nice to meet you. My name’s Y/N Park.”
“Come right in. I’ll show you where your room is,” Cat offered.
You followed her down the hallway to a room that had grey walls, dark wooden floors, and a matching wooden dresser. There was a queen-sized bed with fresh sheets on it and a cream armchair in the corner. Identical nightstands stood on either side of the bed, and there was a bathroom attached to the bedroom.
“Make yourself at home. You look like you’re about to fall asleep standing up,” she joked.
“Yeah, I’m gonna take a quick nap, if that’s okay?” you asked.
“Go ahead.”
Cat closed the door behind her, leaving you alone. You collapsed onto the bed and checked to see if any messages had come in before you’d left the diner’s WiFi, but still nothing. Sighing, you put your phone on the nightstand and let your eyes close, the heaviness becoming too much to fight against.
When you woke up, the sun was high in the sky. You groaned as your arms stretched above your head. According to your phone, it was a little past noon, so you rolled out of bed and headed to the kitchen. Luckily, the password to the WiFi was on the refrigerator. As soon as your phone was connected, it started blowing up with messages and snapchats. The sudden sound made you jump, definitely waking you up. You took some time to respond to the boys and your parents, and it took you a few minutes to notice that none of the notifications were from Jaemin. Sighing, you shoved your phone into your pocket and went looking for Chi-won. You found him in his room, looking at an English book with furrowed brows.
“I’m not starting lessons until after prospect camp,” you said.
The boy jumped, clearly unaware of your presence until you announced it. He closed the book and placed it on the nightstand before looking around the room, avoiding your eyes. Sighing, you sat at the desk that was by the window.
“What’s on your mind?” you asked.
“What if I don’t make it past this camp?” he questioned.
You let out a deep breath and said, “Then you go back to your team in Korea, continue to train and practice, and then next year, you’ll come back. The exact same thing as what you went through last year.”
“What will happen to you?”
“I’ll go back home as well. I’m currently under contract with the team, so if you’re not here, I’m not needed. They’ll let me know when I am. You’re stuck with me.”
///
You and Chi-won walked into the practice rink the next morning, a fresh pair of skates in the duffel bag on your shoulder. You’d gone out with Tyler and Chi-won after dinner to buy them, just like Coach Sturm had told you to. The thought of being on the ice with a bunch of hockey players and falling on your ass was terrifying, but you didn’t have much of a choice.
You headed to the weight room and sat on a bench. Skating wouldn’t come until after they were done for the day, so your bag was simply dropped to the floor. You then pulled out your phone and looked at the last message you’d sent to Jaemin.
You: I know you’re upset, but I would love for you to be at the airport tomorrow.
He never showed up. Everyone else had, but he’d stayed at the dorms. The way the conversation had ended left the status of your relationship up in the air, and you were too scared to ask. Your anniversary was supposed to be in a little over a month, but you didn’t even know if that was something to be celebrated anymore.
The sound of the door opening behind you caught your attention. The players started filtering into the room, shooting odd looks your way. You stood up when Chi-won walked in, moving to his side for when the head strength and conditioning coach started talking.
After a speech, the coach came over and introduced himself, apologizing for missing the meeting the day before. When you assured him it was fine, he transitioned the conversation to the first test he wanted Chi-won to run through. You translated everything as you followed them to the bikes, not missing a single beat. You watched as he pedaled and pedaled, sweat dripping down his face as his leg muscles rippled from the rapid movement. You could hear the cheers of encouragement from the other prospects as they watched the others that were running through the tests.
When there was time for a break, Chi-won took the water bottle you handed him, draining it fairly quickly. He then grabbed the towel from your shoulder and wiped his face and neck, tossing it in the hamper in the corner. He looked around at the other prospects, watching them talk and laugh with each other. You felt bad knowing he wouldn’t take that first step. It was understandable, though. You’d gone through the same thing when you started making trips to Korea; you’d been surrounded by people who understood you as much as you understood them, which was not a lot.
After a few minutes, it was time for more testing. You followed the group around the weight room, mostly watching but translating when needed. Everyone’s eyes were on you whenever either of you spoke, but all your attention was on him and whoever was talking to him.
At the end of the day, Chi-won looked like he was about to drop at any moment. You decided to skip the skating and brought him back to the apartment, using the work phone since it could connect to data. He dozed in the car, his face finally relaxed. You’d never noticed how much tension was there until now. Between the stress of getting past this camp and not knowing what anyone was saying, his head was probably spinning.
When you entered the apartment, Chi-won immediately headed to his room to nap. There was a note from Tyler and Cat that they’d gone to run errands, leaving you alone. You tried to FaceTime your parents, but neither of them answered. You knew the others were rehearsing, so you called Mark, but he didn’t answer either. Feeling dejected, you headed to your room and sat in the armchair. You looked out the window and watched the world below, a sudden flashback to the day you and Jaemin were sitting in the mall’s food court. Your heart ached at the thought of one of the happiest days of your life, knowing there was a chance it was all over.
///
It was the last day of the four-day camp for prospects. You wobbled onto the ice as you tried to skate closer to Chi-won. He looked over and rolled his eyes before skating over, grabbing your arm, and dragging you to the group. A few of the players laughed, but you didn’t care. You would be laughing too if you’d seen it.
Yesterday, they’d run drills, so you got to see Chi-won on the ice for the first time, and you could see why he was their first-round pick the year before. However, the true test was the scrimmage scheduled for today. Drills could be run over and over until you got it right, but in a game if you made a mistake there was no going back.
Once the teams were split, Chi-won helped you to the bench. You could hear your personal phone ring with a FaceTime call, but you ignored it. It was most likely Jeno, calling to talk to you before he finally went to bed. He loved to call you before he went to bed, which annoyed Jaemin whenever you were on a call with your boyfriend. You wished you could answer, since you hadn’t had much interaction with anyone. You mostly translated back at the apartment, leaving you craving to talk to someone, but you felt too awkward talking to Tyler and Cat.
The scrimmage was exhilarating to even just watch. Chi-won was fast, despite how large he was. He wove through players, making fantastic plays. His stick work was quick, and he seemed to know where his teammates were, making passes without looking. There was no doubt in your mind that they were keeping him, but seeing the looks on the coaches faces made it that much better. Chi-won played fairly, probably too much; he always passed the puck for a goal instead of taking a chance himself.
During a break, Coach Sturm was going over a couple plays to Chi-won’s team. You translated as fast as you could, trying your best to make it sound clear and right. Hockey pretty much had its own language, so you assumed it was working when he nodded along. As he was about to head back onto the ice, you grabbed his attention.
“Shoot the fucking puck, man. You’ve made plenty of great passes. They want to see what you’re capable of.”
His eyes widened, but he nodded and bumped your held-out fist before skating back to the face-off. You watched the puck drop, and the game was on. Your eyes never left the player you were there for, his form zipping across the ice with a breakaway. He was denied, but you could tell there was a fire lit under his ass. There were still amazing passes, but he was taking shots on goal more. The goalie was just unbelievably good at his job,
There wasn’t much time left in the scrimmage when Chi-won was skating towards the goal, him against two defensemen. His feet moved in a way you couldn’t explain, and he slipped past the opposing players, taking a shot on goal. You nearly jumped with joy as it flew past the goalie’s shoulder, and you didn’t miss the smile on his face as he celebrated with his teammates.
At the end of the day, Chi-won was asked to dinner with some of the other prospects. He nodded his head with a grin, so they told you the restaurant. Your phone connected to the Bluetooth as you were typing it into the map, and “My First and Last” immediately started playing through the speakers. Chi-won sent a look your way but said nothing.
The other players made sure you and Chi-won had seats next to each other so you could easily translate for him. They asked him questions about his life in Korea and his teammates. He talked about his family, his girlfriend Eun-ji, and his friends. You were learning more about him by doing your job rather than conversing with him yourself. You could feel something heavy settle in your chest as they all talked to each other, only looking to you when you translated.
When you were back at the apartment, Chi-won collapsed onto the couch. You sat in an armchair and stared at the ceiling, thoughts of Jaemin running through your head. It’d been five days since you last heard from him, and you were still hesitant to reach out. He was probably in the same boat, but what if he didn’t want to hear from you? What if your relationship was over and you didn’t know it? You hadn’t talked to the other boys about it, not wanting to drag them into your drama.
“You’re thinking too loud,” Chi-won complained.
“Sorry,” you said quietly. “How do you think camp went?”
“I think I did well. My whole body hurts, though. I wish Eun-ji was here. She gives amazing back massages. I would be in constant pain if it wasn’t for her. I’m definitely the luckiest guy in the world.”
That’s what Jaemin tells me. “Is she gonna be starting college this fall?”
He nodded. “She wants to study sports medicine, so she’ll be studying at Seoul University. I’m so proud of her.”
You looked at the time on your phone before realizing that it was your work one. Your personal phone was still in your duffel, which was in the car. Cursing under your breath, you rushed downstairs and grabbed your phone from the bag.
Jaemin💕: 3 missed FaceTime video calls
Shit. Just in case your relationship wasn’t fragile enough, you’d missed three calls from him. It was the first time either one of you had tried reaching out since you stormed out of the dorms in tears. Worried, you headed inside and returned to the apartment as fast as possible. You tried calling Jaemin back, but he wasn’t picking up. It was about ten in the morning where he was, and he never slept in too much no matter what time he’d gone to bed, so you knew he was ignoring you. Trying again, you cursed and swallowed around the lump in your throat. He finally picked up, and he was not happy.
“Hey,” you said as you moved to your room.
“Hey. Where were you?” he asked.
“We were at camp, and then we went to dinner after,” you explained.
His eyebrows raised. “You went to dinner?”
“Yeah.”
“Was it a date?”
Your eyes widened in shock. “What the fuck, Jaemin? Of course it wasn’t a date! Why the hell would you ask that?”
“I mean, you did say you didn’t know how this would affect our relationship,” he snapped.
“That doesn’t mean I would cheat on you. God, do you really think that low of me?” You could feel the sting behind your eyes of tears forming, but you tried to hold them back.
“I don’t know what to think anymore, Y/N. You waited until the day before you were leaving to tell me about it—”
“I didn’t have a choice, and you know it!” you exclaimed. “You know what? I’m done. I can’t do this right now.”
You hung up and threw your phone across the room, muffling sobs into your hands. Being here, having the job you’ve worked towards the past year, it was supposed to be exciting, yet you were dealing with possibly the worst heartbreak yet, and you didn’t even know if there was a relationship to salvage anymore.
Your phone was ringing with a FaceTime call from Jisung, but you ignored it. He couldn’t see you like this; even though you were partially in the wrong in the fight, he would completely lose it and attack Jaemin. You didn’t want to be the cause of something happening to NCT Dream. It would have to stay to yourself, just like everything else about your life.
///
You’d been in America for two weeks, and you were absolutely miserable. You didn’t talk to the boys as much, ignoring some of their calls so that when you did answer, there was too much to talk about for you to think about Jaemin during the calls. You hadn’t talked to him since your last argument, and you didn’t know what to do. Jisung didn’t now, but it was clear he was suspicious of something. You just wanted to go home, but Chi-won had to stay in California for more training and practice. He’d been invited to training camp in September, so it was easier for him to just stay here until he knew his future with the team post-camp.
Chi-won’s English was improving a little, but it was clear he wasn’t confident in himself. Learning a language was hard, and English was one of the most difficult. From conjunctions to words sounding the same but being spelled different to even the sentence structure, you didn’t blame him for feeling self-conscious and frustrated. You had talked to Jisung, and he’d agreed to speak with Chi-won.
“Chi-won, can you come here for a minute?” you called out.
He walked into the living room, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He looked at your phone, jaw dropping when he saw Jisung on the screen. You held it out and said, “My brother wants to talk to you.”
He took the phone, sending a glance your way before looking back at Jisung. You moved to the kitchen to make breakfast, giving the boys some privacy. You could hear Jisung’s laugh through the tiny speaker, and it made your heart ache. Not seeing him every day felt like torture. You were so used to talk to him every day, but the both of you were too busy with your jobs, not to mention that you were still unsure of what the others knew about you and Jaemin.
As you were making some fried eggs, Chi-won joined you, holding your phone out with Jisung still on the screen. The hockey player sent a look that told you there would be a conversation later, and then he disappeared to his room. You looked at Jisung and smiled, asking him how it went. He said it went well, that Chi-won seemed to really listen to what he’d had to say. A door had opened behind him, and Chenle walked into the room. His face lit up when he saw you, and he ran over and jumped on Jisung’s back.
“Y/N! I haven’t talked to you in so long,” he said, suddenly pouting.
“I know, I’m sorry. Prospect camp was crazy, and I’ve been busy with teaching Chi-won English,” you replied. “I wish you guys were here. You’d love it.”
“We’ll have to visit sometime. Jisung, we gotta head to bed. We have practice tomorrow morning,” he said.
“Sleep well, you two,” you said with a smile.
“Love you!” they shouted, and then the call ended.
You finished breakfast and called for Chi-won. He joined you in the kitchen, taking his plate from you without a word. The two of you sat at the breakfast bar, eating in silence. Tyler and Cat were in Canada for a wedding, so you were alone with him. You waited for him to say something, anything, but he didn’t. Instead, he washed the dishes and went back to his room. He returned a few minutes later in workout clothes, so you changed into your own outfit and silently followed him to the gym downstairs. He started out on the bike while you went to the treadmill, starting a light jog.
After a few minutes, Chi-won said, “So, your brother is Park Jisung.”
“Yup. Has been for ten years,” you panted.
“I didn’t even know he had a sister.”
“No one does. It’s too dangerous.”
“That must suck. I can’t imagine keeping my sister a secret,” he said.
“Seeing him live his dream makes it all worth it. Besides, once I’m living here permanently, we’ll be able to tell everyone who I am.”
///
Getting out of bed was harder and harder as each day passed. You could feel yourself settle into a deep and heavy depression. and it seemed like the people you were living with were concerned. You never felt hungry, you were having trouble finding the motivation to shower, and you were ignoring every call that popped up on your phone.
There was a knock on your door before Cat poked her head in. You glanced at her before turning your attention back to the window. She sat in the armchair and leaned on her elbows, sending a smile your way.
“So, Chi-won and Tyler talked to the team, and they decided that if you want, you can go back to Korea until it’s time for training camp,” she told you.
You sat up slowly and asked, “What?”
“We can all tell how homesick you are, and Chi-won said that you had an argument with someone that sounded like your boyfriend. They have a back-up translator, so you can go home for a little bit,” she explained.
“He told you all that?”
“Well, he used an app to translate, but yes.”
Leaping out of bed, you hugged her tightly, mentally thanking yourself for having showered that morning. She laughed and hugged you back before telling you to start packing. You started throwing your things into suitcases and your duffel bag as she left, and tears started streaming down your face in happiness.
You hugged Tyler and Chi-won in thanks before rushing to the airport, not wanting to stay in America any more than you had to. You called your parents and Jisung once you had a ticket purchased, and they promised to keep it a secret. Jisung was practically vibrating in his seat once he heard the news, and you couldn’t wait to hug your family again.
Somehow, you managed to sleep on the flight. When you landed, it was about three in the afternoon. You raced towards your family as soon as you spotted them, leaping into Jisung’s arms. He lifted you up and squeezed tight, as if you would disappear if he let go. You then hugged your parents, not afraid to let the tears fall down your cheeks.
“I missed you guys so much,” you sobbed.
“We missed you too, sweetheart,” you dad said.
When you were home, you took a couple hours to settle in before taking Jisung with you to the dorms. Not only did you have some boys to surprise, but there was a certain boy with blue bangs you needed to speak to. Jisung seemed to be excited to be on the other end of the surprise.
As you walked into the building, your stomach twisted into a giant knot. You didn’t know how Jaemin was going to react. Before you could dwell on it too much, Jisung opened the door to the Dream dorm. Jeno and Haechan were playing video games in the living area, but they stopped immediately when they looked at you.
“Sunshine!” Jeno shouted. He threw the controller on the couch and ran over, scooping you into a bear hug.
“What are you doing here?” Haechan asked as you managed to pry away from Jeno to hug him.
“They let me come back home until training camp starts,” you explained. “Where are the others?”
“They’re in their rooms. Jaemin’s napping, but Renjun and Chenle are playing PUBG,” Jeno explained. “It’s good to have you back. Jaemin’s been moping every since you left.”
So they didn’t know. “I’ll go see Renjun and Chenle first. Jaemin must be really tired if he’s napping.”
You walked down the hallway and quietly stepped into Renjun and Chenle’s room. They were too busy looking at their phones to notice, so you sat by Renjun and asked how he was doing. He glanced at you and then did a double take before tackling you to the bed. Chenle complained, but when he looked up a screech left his mouth instead as he piled on top. They started asking you a bunch of questions at once, but you shushed them and explained why you were home. Chenle didn’t want to let go, but you explained that Jaemin didn’t know yet.
Jaemin looked so peaceful as he slept. You could just stand there and watch until he woke up, but the conversation needed to be had sooner than later. Quietly closing the door, you walked over and sat on the bed as gentle as possible. Your fingers carded through his hair, pushing it away from his forehead. He sighed in his sleep, melting under your touch. You called out his name lightly, but he didn’t stir. You tried a couple more times, and his eyes finally opened. He stared at you for about ten seconds before grabbing you. You were suddenly thrown on the bed, and he pinned your arms down before kissing you.
Kissing Jaemin felt like a dream, especially after what you two’d been going through the past few weeks. He pressed kiss after kiss to your lips, finally pulling away with a frown.
"I’m really sorry for how I acted the past couple times we talked. I trust you, and I support your career,” he said.
“I forgive you. God, I forgive you. I’ve been so miserable the past few weeks. I should’ve tried harder to tell you sooner than when I had.”
“Let’s just forget this, okay?”
“Deal.”
He leaned down to press your lips together again, not leaving any space between your bodies. He trailed kisses down your neck, sucking a mark into your skin at the base of your throat. When he moved back to your face, he whispered, “I love you.”
That was the first time either of you had ever said those words. Whenever the two of you were together, there was a good chance another Dreamie was with you, so actual dates were rare, which meant that neither of you felt like it was the right time to say them. However, the past three weeks, had proven that it didn’t matter how much time was spent alone.
“I love you too.”
It was about half an hour before you two emerged from the room. The others made fun of the hickeys that were all over your necks, but in that moment you didn’t care. You and Jaemin were more than okay, and that was all that mattered to you.

#14 pls! :D “I come to the library every day to ‘study’ but really I’m just watching Netflix over your shoulder and I’m really invested in this series and the day we’re supposed to be watching the season finale you’re not there and I??? Feel personally betrayed??”
Ask and you shall receive. ❤️ I hope you like!
Thanks to @sahdah and @macabremermaid for the eyes.
“HBO and Chill”
She can’t afford HBO, not making her own way through school, so Maka had never really worried what shows it airs. Why pine for what you can’t afford?
But then, he’d changed all that, the white haired kid who goes to the library to study every Sunday night, like clockwork. Sometimes he comes at 6, and sometimes he rolls in at 8,but he’s always there, just like her. But unlike her, he always takes a break to stream on his laptop.
The first night, Maka had been pissed—sure it isn’t a quiet study floor, but who streams in thelibrary without headphones? She’d been fuming but also curious. Game of Thrones? She’d read the books—had wished she could watch the series—but alas!
Fuming gave way to interest, and instead of confronting him like she thought about during the first 15 minutes, Maka had found herself watching over his shoulder as hequeued up two more episodes that night, and, reading abandoned for the evening, she found herself wondering when the hell she was going to get to watch more.
Maka had been damn near lowering herself to ask her shithead papa for the gift of HBO, sulking in the library as she did her reading and itched for more in the saga of Starks andLannisters, when her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of someone moving in to occupy the table in front of hers, the same table she claims every Sunday. She nearly gasped when she realized it was him again, the white hairedboy from the previous Sunday, the one with HBO, the same one she’d seen around campus and in the back of a few of her classes, silent as as stone.
Maybe he’d watch again, she thought. She hoped. Although, Maka reminded herself, he’d surely be ahead by now and she has always hated skipping episodes. Disappointment hadflooded her as she poked her nose back into her book and there was nothing but yawning quiet, the scratch of her pen, the click of his keys. And then, she heard it. The theme song! And it was… the next episode!
She barely pretended to read that time as he watched three more episodes straight.
That had been months ago, early in the semester, and now, the semester is nearly at an end and so is the series and she can’t wait! Because by some miracle, he clearly only watches at the library on Sunday nights, right when she’s there to see it, and Maka has become invested.
The finale is tonightand she isn’t even pretending to study, she’s so wound. She needs to know what happens. The show has far outpaced the books and waiting is torture, but Maka knows he’ll be here by 9 to livestream like he has been for weeks.Well, maybe she should at least make a stab at studying. Sure she’s got As sofar in her classes, but finals still matter.
Nine o’clock hits and he’s not there. He’s never not there, not all semester, so where is he?
Ten PM hits and she’s inthe first stage of grief, mourning the loss of her livestream. But surely he’llshow and stream, even if it’s a little late. Eleven hits and with it comes the anger. Why now? Why tonight? How dare he string her along through 8 seasons only to deny her the finale!
Fists clenched, Maka makes a decision. Maybe not the most rational decision, but she’s more than a little desperate. Apparently, laptop boy is friends with Blake—she knows because she’d seen them playing one on one together as she passed the courts afew times—so she can find out where he lives or his number or something and—and—
Well, she doesn’t know, but desperate times, desperate, desperate times.
Clicking Blake’s speed dial on her cell, Maka rolls her eyes at his answers of, “Yo, this is your godspeaking, whatcha want?” That being a god brother makes him her actual god ishis personal joke; only he finds it funny.
“I need—a favor.” She sounds more sheepish than she means to, feels silly, almost hangs up, but—
“Sure, shoot, anything for my favorite minion.”
“Uh, so, eh—“ she stammers through his guffaw at her inability to spit it the fuck outalready. But she’s Maka Albarn and if she’s anything, she’s brave, so she pushes on. “That, uh, weird kid with the white hair you play basketball with—“
“Who, Eater? What, you got a thing for him or—“
“Nooo, he just—wait, his name is Eater?”
The guffaw is louder this time. “Nah, not his name name, it’s just what I like to call my newest minion, keep up.”
“And I thought BlackStar was bad,” she mutters, face flaming. Eater. Knowing Blake, she tells herself she doesn’t want to know.
“Yeah, whatever, anyway, Maks, what do you want with my boy Soul? Never pegged you for being into the emo type but, like, no judgement.”
Well, Soul isn’t so bad a name. She finds she likes it. Much better than Eater, anyway.
“I’m not into anyone.” She manages not to snap even if she’s seething in mortification. “He—uh—forgot something at the library and I wanted to try to get ahold of him to—“
“Yeah, yeah, alright,I’ll text you his contact, gotta go, they set up the beer pong table, laterloser.”
Black Star will be BlackStar. At least he texts her the contact, and of course it’s under Eater. Figures, but whatever, she just needs to find out why the hell he ditched her.
She’s already pressed to call and let it ring several times when she realizes all at once she has absolutely zero business bothering him. Because, sure, he’d strung her along like a kitten with a string, laying out all 8 seasons before her like a buffet of medieval shenanigans, but it’s not like he’d done it on purpose.
The end call button gets pushed so fast it might have been the key to stopping the apocalypse. Really, it sort of is. Maka drops her phone on the table like a hot potato and lets the shame wash over her—how could she let sensationalized, bawdy medieval television get such a grip on her?
Her phone vibrates and she scoops it up, craving a distraction from her own silliness.
uh do i no u —the text reads.
No, he certainly doesn’t. Maka has no idea what to do but she can’t not answer, it would be rude, so she types back:
Not really. Blake gaveme your number.
ummm okay why — he responds after a pause.
Why? She can’t exactly tell the truth but she doesn’t like lying, either.
I was worried when you didn’t show up at the library. You’re always there on Sundays at the table infront of mine. Sorry.
It’s the truth, just not all of it. Because she does feel like they’ve bonded over Game ofThrones watching it together every week, and she’s overheard phone calls with his parents and his brother and she’s gotten to know quite a lot about him. Gods, she feels like a stalker, but— but—! He’d invaded her library time, not the other way around! And he’s the one who breaks rules to talk on his cell—he’s lucky she hasn’t reported him! And—
The vibration startles her out of her spiral.
maka shit im sorry im sick running 104 was gonna go set my alarm but slept thru its the finale im sorry gimme a sec ill b there
What. The hell.
He knows her name? And that she’s been watching? And—he’s sick—and—
Don’t you move! 104 is dangerous where do you live? I’ll be right there.
Even as she thoughtlessly hits send she regrets it because what is she doing? He’s going to block her or ignore her or tell her to fuck off, or what if he’s theone who’s actually a stalker—
Vibration. It’s an address, for an apartment complex next to campus.
Be right there. Her fingers send it out before she can even think—he knows her name, he sent her his address, maybe he’s a stalker serial killer?
But she’d called him. Also like a stalker. So it makes no sense and what even is she doing with her life?
For about half a second, Maka considers blocking his number and going home, never to enter the library on a Sunday night again. But he’s running a 104 fever; he might need help! And—she’s not a coward and she’s fully capable of kicking ass if she must. AND—the Game of Thrones finale is at his beck and call.
That’s the clincher, so she packs her things and makes her way across campus. It’s nearly midnight, so Maka keeps to well lit walks, and it isn’t long before she’s at his door. She knocks and hears coughing and shuffling and then he’s opening the door, looking bedraggled in plaid pajama pants and a ratty band tee, dark smudges under his eyes, his pale hair sticking up every which way. Well, the last part isn’t sofar off from his normal, anyway, but he looks sort of pathetic with his fuzzy blue blanket over his shoulders. Endearingly so.
“Uh, so,” she says, fidgeting with the strap of her bag on her shoulder and looking at his mouth to avoid his eyes.
“You can—uh—come in.” He sounds nervous even past the unusual scratchiness of his voice, but steps back, so she steps in. He closes the door behind her and she notices he’s got a nest of blankets on his big leather couch. She’s pretty sure she can hear an episode of Chopped somewhere in the background.
“Lay down.” Maka finally takes charge, tired of them both standing so awkwardly. “You have tea?”.
He just blinks at her for a minute, shakes his head, then looks between the couch and the kitchen. “Uh, sure, I can make—“
“Nooo!” she cuts himoff. “For you. I’ll make it.”
“Maka, you don’t have to—“ it’s the first time she’s ever heard him say her name and it startles her, especially because she sort of likes it.
“I know, but I want to.Help, I mean. So lay down.” She doesn’t give him the chance to protest, just walks into his kitchen and begins opening cabinets.
“Furthest cabinet on the left,” she hears his voice call out from the living room. “Cups in the dishwasher.”
She finds the tea (loose leaf! She doesn’t expect that!) and cups and sets the electric kettle on the counter below the tea cabinet to boil.
Several minutes later, she’s got two steaming cups of green tea with an herbal blend, and she walks them out to the living room. Soul has neatened the couch and is sitting up, leaving room on the other side. His eyes are closed and he’s snoring softly. Poor boy looks pathetic, flushed and droopy. Maka sets down a tea cup on the coffee table in front of him, sets the second on the other side, and sits across from him on the couch. She means to let him rest but it’s so awkwardsitting with a sleeping not quite stranger that she clears her throat nervously.
Startling awake, he looks at her, blinks, then seems to recall the situation,
“Uh. So. Wanna watch the finale?”
It’s at least half of why she’s here, so she nods, still feeling awkward and out of place, yet absolutely determined.
They end up commenting to each other through the episode and it’s nice. Why haven’t they ever watched it together like this? Not just Maka spying and pretending not to, but actually just—together? She could have asked and sat with him but she’s been silly.
It’s a regret, but as the episode ends, they’re both too full of feelings and ideas for it to last, and they talk about the finale and the series for a good hour before she stifles a yawn and he lets out a huge sneeze and she remembers who he is and where they are.
“So um—thanks for letting me come watch.”  She’s fidgeting again, this time with the hem of her hoodie.
“‘’Course. Thanks for giving a shit and taking care of me.” His smile is wide and genuine and she could maybe melt which is—silly for a lot of reasons, really—but she also remembers—
“How do you know my name?” she blurts.
“Uh.” A nervous hand musses his hair further. “We’ve had like four classes together and you—sort of stand out.”
He’s already pink with fever but his skin goes red and—is he blushing? She blushes back at the thought.
“Oh, yeah, okay, I just—uh—didn’t realize you noticed me or anything, especially at the library.”
Gods this is embarrassing.
“You weren’t exactly subtle,” his voice is gruff as he looks at his hands.
“But—“ she stammers. “Then why didn’t you just ask me to watch with you if you knew?”
“Thought you’d say no.” His eyes are still down though they flick her way for an instant.
Would she have?
Maybe. In the wrong mood. She can be stubborn, she knows. But still.
“Well, since I’m here, you were wrong.”
“Yeah, I caught that. Guess it’s too late now, anyway. Show’s done.”
It is, isn’t it.
The thought of giving up her Sunday study tv night makes her inexplicably sad. Especially since she’s here during summer and knows he is, too, from one of his calls with his brother.
“You have Hulu?” Inspiration strikes.
“Er—Uh—yeah?” He looks confused.
“Because I don’t, and I’ve been dying to watch Hamdmaid’s Tale.”
“Oh! Yeah, that’d be—cool. We could start tonight—I mean—“
“Yeah, sounds good. You clearly shouldn’t be alone with that fever and I don’t have a final until Tuesday!”
“Cool,” he repeats, calling up the Hulu menu on the television.
For her part, Maka can’thelp a slight satisfaction at having made a new friend who can afford to stream.

____________________
kim namjoon
you see
the kim namjoon is a smart kid
child genius if i say so myself
and boy he knew it
no eleven year old chooses to write a paper about hubble’s law of cosmic expansion for a science project instead of making a trifold and using liquid cement
no, namjoon writes a 4-page paper in apa style with a magnificent abstract
he got an A on it of course
his brilliance only goes up from there
and with his rich parents, he has the opportunity-
to which yoongi and seokjin would say “privilege”
but let’s just say “opportunity”
to do incredible research and studies and experiments
his dad has a science lab built just for him in their house
by nineteen, namjoon has taken over a good percentage of his parents’ business
kim enterprises
growing up, namjoon had an idea that his parents’ business was pretty expansive and were involved in many areas
but it wasn’t until he was placed in board meetings at eighteen when he absorbed how powerful his family really was
and sure the business aspect of him was aight, but he loved his lab and would rather leave the negotiating to his mom and dad
you grew up with namjoon, you were also from a wealthy family
your fathers were childhood friends and they grew their businesses together
although kim enterprises surpassed your family’s wealth easily, the bond between your families were still tight
namjoon was stubborn and a smartass
but he wasn’t a jerk, just...very selective with his true self
he’s also a bit spoiled, but with his parents who gave into his every wish, it just turned out that way
at 21, namjoon’s parents got into a plane crash on the way to a meeting in london and it unfortunately claimed their lives
namjoon became the sole CEO and heir of kim enterprises
he asked you for help because damn he couldn’t run a whole business by himself??
and you weren’t needed yet to run your own family business
so you didn’t mind helping out your friend
things were running okay with little kinks in the road, but the business was still thriving and so namjoon was okay with that
until one day when you and namjoon were hanging out in his family mansion and it was broken into
in a crazy haze, you were captured and abducted
namjoon knew they were after him and not you and for the first time in his life:
he had absolutely no idea what to do
he had to find you of course but he didn’t know where to start
namjoon couldn’t tell your parents because they would absolutely kill him for not protecting you
and honestly he wanted to beat himself up too for that fact
thanks to his brilliant mind, he managed to track wherever the fuck you were being held captive
he took his private jet out to a nearby place and did the rest by foot
this was basically a suicide mission and he knew it, but to hell with it
namjoon would exchange his life for yours, you’ve been with him since birth
back to you
you were being held in a cell
your captors needed namjoon to build something for them, but since you weren’t him, you were useless to them
you thought they were going to kill you
but instead they just locked you up
you didn’t expect to see namjoon being pushed into your cell with you
“joon what the fuck are you doing here?”
“I uh...I found you.”
you thought he would have told your dad and then like officers would come and find you
not namjoon, alone.
“did you expect to just walk in and sweet talk them into letting me go?”
he scratched the back of his neck
“for a genius, you’re fucking stupid.”
“okay, truthfully, i thought I could turn myself in and that would convince them to let you go, but i guess they just took both of us haha.”
for weeks you two were held prisoner, your captors taking namjoon in the morning and returning with him at night
you were just stuck in there
but whenever joon came back, he had a new injury to him
your heart hurt whenever you saw him come back, pain all over his face
you would do your best into aiding him, but you didn’t really have much options in the small cell
it was one night when he didn’t come back and your mind automatically assumed that he was dead
you started sobbing in the cell, god you were going crazy
you needed to get out of there
and then when you heard some whimpering and cries of pain, your drive only got bigger bc you knew it was namjoon
you started clanging on the cell and screaming for them to let you go
and then from the corner of your eye, you spotted joon crawling to you, all bloodied up
you gasped spotting the large wound on his chest
but before you could start losing your mind about your best friend was going to die, he calmly started instructing you to build a generator for him
you: joon! I’m not as smart as you, this thing is going to fucking blow up
joon: y/n, calm down and listen to me. you can do this, i believe in you
also joon: connect that wire to the plug...black long thing to red square.
as the hours went on into the night, namjoon sounded weaker and weaker, making you urgent into finishing his little generator
you started holding his hand
“joon, it’s done, okay? it’s done.”
“this is going to hurt like a bitch, but put that generator in my wound. and shove my shirt in my mouth, shut me up with it or we’ll get caught.”
“w-what?”
“just do it y/n!”
you shoved the triangle thing you made (with his help) into his chest and shut your eyes as you basically gagged joon quiet
within minutes he started to get better and you felt like a huge weight was lifted off your shoulders
the last thing you remember before crashing was joon saying “thank you, y/n, now go rest.”
you were awaken by a huge bang
lo and behold, namjoon’s in a tin suit and he blasted your cell open
you could barely register namjoon breaking the roof of your cell and grasping you by the waist and flying you out of there
his tin suit failed him within minutes, the thrusters he built at his feet giving in
but the important thing was that you two made it out and crashlanded in a lake
the place where you were held captive burst into flames
you were founded by your father’s men
(he had some great influence in the army)
and fuck you and joon suffered from one hell of a ptsd
for a while, joon became distant
i mean, could you blame him? y’all got kidnapped and almost died
you tried to reach out but his house security kept denying you
cute side note: namjoon’s jarvis is called moni
“god dammit moni, i just wanna talk to him”
“my apologies miss/sir y/n, master kim doesn’t want any visitors at the moment.”
:(
the next time joon talked to you was months after you two were found, he invited you over to his house and his security system led you straight to his lab
you walked in to see your best friend in a golden technological suit, the triangle generator you helped him make glowing on the torso of his suit
“joon, what the fuck are you doing?”
he sat you down and explained how after your whole kidnapping, he realized that he had a gift
and he could either be sitting around waiting to be kidnapped again for his mind to be used for the worst
or he could be doing something for the greater good
you honestly couldn’t follow, couldn’t he just use his wealth to donate to charities or something?
but no, he wanted to be proactive and idk be some kind of superhero
“why are you telling me all this?”
“well, not only are you my best friend and we have suffered through hell together...if I happen to die out there, I’m leaving you in charge of kim enterprises.”
“huh die out where? joon you’re not going back there.”
he then told you how he was forced to build weapons while you were kidnapped and how his parents dealt with underground business with terrible people and now it’s come to bite him and kim enterprises in the ass
“i’m going back. If you want, you can stay here and monitor me. moni has complete access to my suit, it is my eyes and ears.”
“god, just...come back, don’t die on me, please.”
you end up watching him complete whatever mission he had for himself
but also how he got his ass beat
you almost missed a pair of boys save him from where he was
they were quick to the eye, dressed all in black, you just remember one with a bow and arrow
fast forward another couple months
joon was safe, thank god, and just doing insane upgrades on his suit and what not
you called him golden boy, but he said that name just didn’t suit him
you see that pun i put there ;)
the two of you were discussing the art exhibit he needed to attend when moni alerted him of visitors
surprise surprise it was the same two boys that you remember saving him, except they were dressed casually this time
“you must be y/n, namjoon hyung’s better half.”
namjoon glared at the boy, “shut up, jimin.”
the other one spoke, “we need you both to come to headquarters.”
“omg I’m not being kidnapped again, am i?”
the three of them laughed
you were told that jimin and the other boy, taehyung, were agents under BTS, a protection initiative created by their boss, Mr. Bang
and now, namjoon was being recruited to be part of that initiative
BTS is a specialized sub-unit to the larger Avengers motion
it put your mind at ease knowing that namjoon wasn’t alone in his whole fighting crime and saving lives ordeal
the media deemed namjoon’s golden suit as “iron man”
and although you personally liked your “golden boy” name better
joon had a complete liking to the other name
you witnessed when they recruited more agents to BTS
namjoon began to have a nice bond with the other boys
and it made you happy, of course, knowing that he had others by his side
but sometimes you couldn’t help but feel as if you were being replaced as his best friend
especially when he and the wakandan king, jung hoseok, became rather close
namjoon first realized his feelings for you when kim seokjin, aka the god of thunder, was flirting with you during one of joon’s house parties
he almost had a fist fight with him
but the other boys held them back from beating each other up
a supersuit vs a god with insane powers? that wasn’t going to end well at all
and so namjoon secretly pined for you
you were still doing business together, but it was mostly you because he was busy now with world saving duties
you were the one to convince him to recruit their youngest and final member to BTS
the spider kid, jeon jungkook
namjoon becomes jungkook’s mentor
and it’s quite endearing
but jk’s also the one to spill to you that namjoon has had the hugest crush on you for the longest time
kid just can’t keep his mouth shut sometimes
all the boys knew that namjoon was basically in love with you
they even helped him come up with this elaborate event of confessing to you
...which all went to hell bc yoongi got triggered and smashed everything
yoongi felt so bad afterwards
but all ended well bc of course you loved namjoon back
he was your best friend and your #1 since day 1
namjoon ends up revealing himself as iron man probably a year after the whole BTS unit was solidified
the press was hell for kim enterprises
which you had to mainly contain :/
but you know he’s a charmer in front of the camera
your parents were a bit iffy when they found out you were dating iron man
but if anyone could take care of you, they knew it would be namjoon
aw im emo
dating your best friend/business partner is a rollercoaster
you’ve had your fair share of heart attack moments, waiting for him after a battle or a mission
namjoon has put his life in danger and will continue to put his life in danger and you’re just going to have to deal with that
he hates that he also puts your life in danger just by association, but you have a lot of protection, courtesy of Mr. Bang
you wear his suit sometimes and try to fly it for fun
he finds you cute
builds you a suit, yourself, but you don’t wear it often
mostly bc you know there’s some weapons included for safety and that scares you a bit
you end up merging businesses with kim enterprises
and run the whole rodeo bc he’s too busy saving the world
but you always keep him updated on what’s happening
he’s become less arrogant after being with the boys and after dating you
but he’s still a smartass
uses kim enterprises’ wealth and resources for the improvement of BTS
it’s pretty useful if you ask me
namjoon becomes the spokesperson for BTS ;)
he and his boys save the world on the regular
but he wouldn’t be saving the world if you didn’t save his world first
u fucking wu
that last part was cheesy but am i sorry about it?
nah

give what it takes* 1/2 Remington leith x reader
+++++++++
hello i still hate writing for actual people but ya girls gotta do what ya girls gotta do, i love palaye and ive been like super obsessed with them again lately cause im seeing them in may and just bought their palette and cant stop thinking about it so ya know here it is #noshame #someshame
* - smut, mentions of sex, mention of kinks, thigh riding, etc. Read at your own risk
song: get some by ghosted
+++++++++
the concert ended but the party didnt. i was lucky enough to be on tour with palaye but still had work to do when the shows were over. it was a week we had stops that were close enough together to stay at an air b&b for the night, which was nice since i could finally sit down and get things done. we had all went back to the house after the concert to get cleaned up, the boys being extremely sweaty from the stage lights and high energy performance. i sat at the island typing as they all ran around getting ready for the night ahead of them. i sat quietly as they conversed with their girlfriends who were visiting for the weekend.
i looked up when remington threw himself into the bar stool across the counter from me. he smiled at me before picking up one of the apples from the bowl on the counter and tossing it in the air. he took a large bite out of it as emerson walked out into the kitchen/living room.
"you going with us tonight?"
i looked down at my laptop to scan my work before looking back at him.
"i dont think so, its already eleven and ive got too much work to do tonight."
he frowned at me before gesturing to remington.
"you coming?"
rem looked at me and i peered at him over my laptop.
"ya know what, why dont you guys go ahead, ill stay here and help y/n."
i looked up completely, shock written on my features.
"you dont have to do that rem, you should go and have fun."
his 'girlfriend' walked up to his side and played with his hair.
"yeah remi, come have fun with us, she doesnt need your help to do her job."
she peered at me and i sent her a stern glare.
he rubbed her back.
"why dont you go hang out with them, ill be right here when you get back."
she leaned down and kissed him and led the way for them all to leave. when the door was closed me and remi were the only two left in the house. he tapped the counter as i went back to typing.
"so, its been a while since we were alone together."
i looked up at him.
"yep."
i went back to typing.
"whatcha doin over there?"
"fixing lighting."
"whats wrong with the lighting?"
i looked up at him and raised an eyebrow.
"the yellows and greens where washing Emerson out the whole show. i have to fix the positioning on my renderings for the next venue."
he nodded and made an o with his mouth. i went back to typing.
"is there anything else you have to fix?"
i looked up at him.
"a couple things."
"like?"
i sighed.
"remington if you keep asking me questions im not gonna get anything done."
i laughed lightly and he smiled at me, throwing his hands in the air in defeat.
"okay, okay, if you want help with anything let me know, im gonna go chill on the couch."
he motioned behind him and i nodded before getting back to work.
---
i sighed and stretched, i had been sitting on this bar stool for almost two hours. none of the group had showed back up yet and remington was still sitting on the couch scrolling through his phone. i closed my laptop as i heard him laugh out loud at something he saw on his feed. i rolled my eyes before standing and shaking out my legs.
"god, i feel like ive been curled over forever."
he turned to look at me as i made my way to the couch, sitting on the arm rest next to him. he slid down the settings on his phone to look at the time more clearly.
"well, in all fairness you have been sitting on your computer for over two hours, its one."
i groaned.
"yeah, im surprised no ones back yet."
he stretched and clasped his hands together behind his head, lengthening his body.
"im not, when the boys drink, the boys drink."
he laughed and i just shook my head.
"whatever."
he nudged my leg with his elbow.
"do you wanna do something now that your work is done?"
i shrugged and let my legs fall on either side of the arm rest.
"what did you have in mind?"
i looked down at him, seeing him quickly opening youtube then shoving his phone in my face.,
"look at this."
i leaned back a little before taking it and watching the video. i looked at remington funny.
"really?"
he shrugged.
"what?"
i turned the phone around to show him.
"boy out here on the weird side of youtube."
he laughed and took the phone back.
"i mean you didnt have to take it."
i rolled my eyes.
"yeah but i was curious."
he raised an eyebrow and smirked at me.
"arent we all."
i winked at him.
"you know it."
he leaned toward me and rested his arm on my thigh, smacking my knee with his hand. i shifted.
"what?"
i shook my head.
"nothing."
he tapped my my knee with his fingers like he was playing a keyboard. i watched his hand intently before looking back at him staring at me. he raised an eyebrow.
"okay maybe im just a little touch starved."
i ran a hand through my hair and looked away from him. he scooted closer to me.
"touch starved?"
i looked back at him and nodded slowly. he locked eyes with me and squeezed my lower thigh.
"are you okay?"
i shrugged.
"i just dont touch people or let people touch me and thats one of the leading reasons im depressed and sick all the time. like adult humans need affection and hugs and kisses and things like that but i cut myself off so i dont really get the things that my brain needs to be happy."
i looked ahead of me, i didnt care to see his pity ridden face. suddenly he moved and hugged me tightly from the side, his left ear pressed to my right arm.
"do you feel better yet?"
i laughed.
"yes rem, definitely."
i ruffled his hair lightly with my left hand and he looked up at me but didnt remove his arms from my body.
"liar."
i slouched into him.
"okay, its not like you can fix it right away."
he loosened his grip a little before kneeling next to me on the couch and squishing my face in his hands.
"what else would you want me to try?"
i shrugged.
"did you ever used to try things to feel better? like find one person to hug everyday or something?"
i laughed and he let go of my face. i just shook my head,
"what?"
i looked at him knowingly.
"sex. i used to have sex."
his face went straight.
"sex."
i nodded.
"yeah, i used to have sex to make myself feel better, it was intimate and 'affectionate' touching for at least a night. in case you haven't noticed though i havent been with anyone since we started plans for tour months ago so yeah theres nothing i can really do about that."
he sat back on his knees defeated.
"i guess you couldnt masturbate either cause thats still not another person touching you, that you touching yourself."
he looked at me with a straight face before we both laughed. he laid back on the couch, his feet pushed up against the arm rest i was sitting on. he rested one hand behind his head and the other on his stomach.
"so, did you just find random dudes or?"
i sent him a look.
"really, thats what your worried about right now?"
he shrugged.
"i figured it was a ligther topic i dont know."
i just shook my head.
"no they werent just random dudes, you gotta have a connection first ya know. they were people that i had hung out with before, kind of close but not enough for them to care if we slept together and then didnt talk for a little while ya know. it was always easier that way cause i knew who wanted a screw and who wanted more depending on the mood i was in."
he raised a brow.
"particular people for particular kinks or turn ons?"
i smiled at him.
"yeah sometimes."
"like?"
"like people or like turn ons and kinks?"
"turn ons and kinks, i couldnt care less about the people."
i laughed at the face he made.
"what you want a reference?"
"just trying to see what kind of person youre hiding under that hard exterior."
i raised a brow and smirked at him.
"okay, well for starters id say soft touches."
he laughed.
"wow, soft touches?"
"dont laugh, its a turn on, start light and build up ya know."
"youre right, continue."
"neck fetish, not just like i like necks im talking like hickeys and kissing and licking, weird vampire shit ya know."
"amen to that."
i laughed at him.
"thigh riding-"
"im sorry what?"
"thigh riding?"
"yeah what the hell kinda?"
i lifted my foot up on the couch so it wasnt dangling in front of it anymore.
"its where you are on someones lap or like knelt over one of their thighs while their sitting down and grind yourself on them to get off. i guess in my instance making out with someone while they touch me, but while thats happening im riding their thigh.? "
"that sounds like itd be an  experience."
i looked at him with a sly smile.
"oh it is."
there was a pause.
"can you show me?"
if i was drinking i would have spat all over the place.
"you what?"
"can you should me? i mean your on the arm of the chair, you could do it on that right?"
i laughed.
"do you know how wet that would make someone? the couch would be near ruined."
i laughed.
"so do it on me."
i stopped and looked at him, he was staring up at me with a very serious face.
"You're joking right?"
"What's wrong with two friends hooking up?"
I shrugged.
"I don't know how about the fact that you kinda have a girlfriend."
"Oh come on no one here even likes her, not even me, and we're not really dating she's just like around."
I rolled my eyes.
"Tell her that."
"I'm telling you that, now get over here and show what the heck thigh riding is."

Mamihlapinatapai
This follows my Untitled: “Last Gasp” Inspired piece from last year, so it’s set in mid March-ish 2018. It also fills the “Mutual Pining” square on my CM Bingo card.
WC: Almost 1,900
Notes: Taylor and Jaime are two of McKinley’s bandmates. They will appear in an earlier set fic that I haven’t finished yet 😏
Mamihlapinatapai is a Yagan (of the Nyungar people) word which means, “the wordless, yet meaningful look shared by two people who both desire to initiate something but are both reluctant to start.”
—–
Tumblr media
“Congrats, guys!” McKinley exclaimed, raising her glass. “The Dream Team is back together and Barnes has retreated to her office to lick her wounds. All is as it should be.”
“Cheers!” everyone toasted, laughing against their professional judgement.
JJ slid into the seat next to McKinley.
“It feels great to come back home,” Emily sighed, soaking in the sunset view from Rossi’s back yard.
McKinley sipped her Scotch, tapping the table suddenly when something occurred to her.
“Spencer, how ever will you tell your students you’ll no longer be teaching full-time?” Her hand flew to her heart. “Your fan club will be absolutely devastated, poor things,” she smirked, sounding anything but sympathetic.
Spencer almost choked on his wine. “Oh God, no,” he started, but just then Garcia joined them at the table.
“What’s this about fan club stuff? Are you planning costumes for a convention?” she asked.
Spencer buried his face in his hands and grumbled something that sounded like ‘piece of meat.’
McKinley stole a bit of Penelope’s Mai-tai before continuing. “No cons, Penny, unless you think dozens of shrieking harpies only there to drool over the male lead qualifies as a ‘convention.’”
Emily leaned around JJ. “Well, that piqued my interest. Go on.”
Spencer moaned, his voice muffled behind his palms.
“Nearly one hundred people came to his lecture this week,” McKinley stated. “They’ve become very popular…with the ladies.”
“Wow! Spence, that’s great,” JJ congratulated him, though she had a mischievous gleam in her eye.
“Yeah, Boy Wonder,” Penelope chimed in. “Why the bashfulness?” She’d had a few drinks and was a bit slow on the uptake.
McKinley rolled her eyes. “Penny, bubeleh, most of them weren’t there to learn,” she emphasized, staring pointedly at Spencer.
Penelope started to cotton on. “Oh,” she grinned. “You’re saying that they-”
“Got it baaad, got it baaad, got it baaad. They’re hot for teacher. Ow!”
Emily wolf-whistled as JJ stretched over the table to ruffle Spencer’s hair.
He finally reemerged, his face beet-red, though he appeared annoyed rather than angry.
“Ley, tell us more about these fangirls,” Garcia demanded, bouncing in anticipation. “Give us the deets.”
McKinley glanced at Spencer, who shrugged, apparently resigned to the good-natured ribbing.
“Do y’all remember The Bimbettes from Beauty and the Beast?” she asked, “and the “I Love You Eyelid Girl” from Raiders of the Lost Ark?”
Penelope giggled into her drink. “That bad, huh?”
“Ugh, worse,” groaned McKinley, now buzzed and losing her filter. “Both of those things cranked up to eleven.”
She rested her elbows on the table, imitating everything the students had done. “They weren’ listenin’ to a thang he said. They twirled their hair, got all doe-eyed and constantly ‘Ooohed’ and ‘Aaahed.’ Talk about flirtin’ up a storm. I swear a few of ‘em drooled.”
“You don’t say,” Emily snickered.
“It was disgusting. Those girls made such asses of themselves. I felt bad for ‘em really.”
“Uh-huh,” JJ chuckled, sounding unconvinced.
“No, honestly! They just would not back down. They stalked us through the hallway. I was worried they were gonna eat ‘im alive!” McKinley cried as she fluffed Spencer’s hair. “I had to keep Skindiana Jones here safe.”
“I uh, I don’t recall them stalking us,” Spencer interjected, “and I still don’t understand why women always-”
“Spence, read. the book. we gave you!”
“Seriously! This has happened on so. many. cases.”
“Yeah! Remember Lila Archer?”
McKinley whipped her head around. “Wait, what? Lila Archer the actress?”
“Yeah,” replied JJ. “Lila was a stalking victim 12 years ago. Spence stayed at her house. She pulled him into her pool and they made out.”
“Oh, she’s very pretty. I imagine that must’ve been quite something!”
“Don’t forget all the working ladies who hit on him,” Emily added.
“And the bartender who flirted with him,” slurred Penny.
Spencer shook his head. “Women go for guys like Morgan or Alvez, not me.”
McKinley frowned. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d assume that right there is false modesty. It’s not though, and that makes me sad.”
“I’m weird.”
“Weird should be a compliment,” McKinley countered.
“I ramble a lot-”
“Some find it endearing.”
“-about things nobody’s interested in.”
“I’m interested…”
But Spencer wasn’t paying attention.
“My hair’s too long…”
“It suits you, Spencer.”
“I dress like an eighty-year-old man.”
McKinley scrunched her face in amusement. “Yeah, like I said the other day, I’m fairly certain the whole tenured professor look is their kink. Face it, Pretty Boy: yer eye candy.”
Spencer grimaced and hoisted himself up from his chair.
“No, don’t go!” McKinley pleaded, loosely grabbing his forearms. “We’ll stop now, right guys?”
“Of course.”
“Sure.”
“Fine, I’ll zip my perfect, rosy lips.”
Spencer eyed them warily before lowering himself back down. As he drained his glass, McKinley resumed her elbows-on-table pose, feigning innocence.
“I do have one question for you though, Doctor.”
He arched an eyebrow. “What might that be?”
McKinley fiddled with his tie, unknotting it. “I’m worried about my grade in your class. T-t-t-teacher, can you see me after school?”
Spencer sputtered, blushing furiously, then jerked his tie out of her hand and stormed off as dignified as possible.
“I think of all the education that I missed,” she called after him, gesturing for the others to join her. They chorused, “But then my homework was never quite like this!”
They all dissolved into fits of laughter, although McKinley’s quickly dissipated.
“Shit, he’s my ride home. That’s gonna be awkward.”
Emily cleared her throat. “So, how long have you been in love with Reid?”
“I – what?” McKinley squeaked. “I’m not in love with Spencer! What gave you that idea?”
“That show you put on just now. Plus, I saw you two on my porch the other day. I have security cameras…with audio,” Emily admitted.
“Anyway, you’ve looked at each other differently for a while now. You act differently towards each other too. Maybe bringing up the lecture is your subconscious telling you that you two have evolved beyond friendship.”
McKinley shook her head. “Emily, we haven’t known each other long enough for that.”
“Granted, five months is fast,” said Tara, who’d slid into the table unnoticed, “but you’ve spent a lot of his sabbatical and regular time outside work together. Simply put? The quality of your and his friendship could well outweigh the length.”
“And the way you talked about those students?” JJ added. “You called them shrieking harpies and you sounded ready to rip them apart. I mean, I believe that they drooled over Spence, but you laid it on kind of thick. Was it all about keeping him safe, or was it also you telling them to back off?”
That had McKinley stumped. She remembered silently mocking the girls’ behavior, and how she smugly whispered, “It’s never gonna happen,” effectively saying Spencer was out of their league. What stood out the most was how she stared them down as she linked arms with him, deriving satisfaction from their…jealousy?
“Did I deliberately taunt them?” McKinley wondered to herself.
She recalled a sensation of hackles raising. There was no polite way to word it.
“I was marking my territory.”
McKinley had a sudden desire to take a shower.
Her feelings had undoubtedly shifted, but she had no frame of reference for them. And that frightened her.
She switched tactics. “Don’t forget that I’m aroace, guys. I don’t experience romantic or sexual attraction.”
Garcia popped up from her phone, where she’d been hunting down the ‘perfect first date venue.’ “You talk a lot about how sexy and pretty guys are, though. I’ve caught you staring at many a tuchus. What’s that about?” she winked.
McKinley cut eyes at her. “I’m asexual, Penny, not blind. I admired the Venus de Milo too, but I didn’t wanna hump it either.”
“Y’know, I used to identify as bi,” Penelope replied. “I was in my late twenties before I knew that I’m pan. It’s only for you to say but, it might be worth considering demi identities.”
That struck a chord with McKinley. It would require a lot of unpacking her emotions, but it was definitely worth considering.
Spencer stole glimpses at McKinley as he drove her home. She was drumming a beat on the armrest. He chuckled; she always did that while deep in thought.
Stopping at a light pulled her from her reverie. “Thank you for driving me home,” she said rather meekly.
“You’re welcome. Never take Uber or Lyft.” He coughed nervously. “You know, because it’s not the safest mode of transportation. Half of our cases start that way,” he joked.
McKinley grinned. “You’re an absolute prince for doing this, especially since I’m a rotten friend.”
Spencer’s jaw dropped. “No, you’re not! Is this about the lecture? Because it’s nothing the team hasn’t teased me about before.”
“Yeah, but I shoulda known they’d take the piss,” she whined, kicking her legs grumpily, “and I went too far with the song. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, I forgive you,” he assured her as he stepped on the gas. “Although, I’d like to point out that I’ve never once brought up the men who hit on you at bars.”
“True,” McKinley breathed, playing with a loose thread on her blouse. “But that seems to have died down at O’Keeffe’s recently.”
Spencer pressed his lips together, eyes fixed on the road. She eyed him suspiciously.
“You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?” she prodded him.
“Think fast.”
“It’s probably the team’s presence. Most of the regulars know who we are.”
Fortunately, she accepted his suggestion. “Yeah, that’s feasible.”
“Truth is I shoved my credentials in their faces once or twice,”he confessed silently.
“When that doesn’t work, I step between you and them while flashing my revolver, but I’m not owning up to any of that.”
Spencer parked in Taylor and Jaime’s driveway and walked McKinley to her tiny house in the backyard. Boogie bolted out to greet them, tail wagging vigorously.
At her door, she twisted around for a final goodnight, surprised to find Spencer standing so near. He raised his hand and combed his fingers through her hair.
“Cherry blossom,” he explained, showing the pale pink flower in his hand. Spencer reached up again, brushing hair out of her eyes, lingering this time.
McKinley found herself tilting her head into his hand.
“Please don’t stop playing with my hair. Is this what he feels when I play with his? Am I blushing? Is he blushing? What’s that look he’s giving me? Affection? Is that how I look at him? I wish he’d say something. I should say something, but I can’t speak. My heart’s pounding. What’s wrong with me? I never have trouble talking to Spencer. How can someone make me flustered and relaxed at the same time?”
Spencer moved even closer. “Ley, I was wondering -”
“Bork!”
They sprang apart, the spell broken, to see Boogie dancing impatiently. He jumped, placing his paws on Spencer’s thighs.
“Hey buddy, I’m not ignoring you,” he promised as he scratched the dog’s ears.
Satisfied, Boogie pushed open the door and stared expectantly at McKinley.
Spencer retreated down the stairs. “I should be going. Good night, Ley,” he said, the slightest note of disappointment in his voice.
“Night, Spencer. Text me when you get home?”
“Always,” he smiled up at her, stepping backwards towards the fence and through the gate.

heya!! i wanted to request hc’s for RFA with a methyphobic mc? i get rlly nauseous and terribly anxious (shaking, stuttering, sweating, tearing up, etc) when alcohol is around me or mentioned. my mom was a pretty horrible alcoholic, and that’s where it sprouted ^^;; my friends and family all think i’m weird for it, but i experienced a lot of trauma bc of alcohol, so it makes me feel rlly bad when they don’t try to understand. i was hoping for a bit of comfort through this!! thank you so much!!
yes of course!!! im so sorry that your friends and family say that, that is totally valid and it’s awful that you have to experience that! i’m super sorry if some of these sound repetitive or basic, i tried really hard to convey how much the RFA would care about you and respect your phobia, but i’m only human haha.
1,899 words, 10,051 characters
Yoosung
it comes out when you’re playing LOLOL together with some mutual friends of yours
one of them mentions how they just got back from buying beer from the nearby 7-eleven and how they’re gonna get wasted later that night
you want to say how uncomfortable you are, but out of fear of seeming “uncool” to yoosung’s friends, you stay silent even though you’ve been talkative all night
after around 10 minutes, the friend actually does bust out some of the beers and starts drinking
that’s when you start to really get nervous
as soon as the match is over, you start scrambling for any excuse to log off for the rest of the night
yoosung notices this, and since you two are literally in the same room, he spins in his chair and starts asking you what’s wrong
you remind him that he forgot to leave the match and it’s still going on,
but he doesn’t care about that dumb game right now.
he just wants to know what’s wrong and what he can do to help
after a lot of hugging, you finally tell him about your methyphobia
he’s a little taken aback, as he’s never heard of it.
but when he thinks about how much his friend was mentioning alcohol he gets
really irritated at his “friend”
you have to tell him that his friend didn’t know and that it’s okay but he still insists on telling him how uncomfortable he made you
after a long back and forth, you realize there’s no stopping him
as if he read your mind, he immediately shoots up to his computer and starts typing
then, when he’s taken care of that, he takes your hand and starts reassuring you again
he’ll never let any mention of alcohol touch your ears again, not if he can help it
and he means it.
he’s really glad that you told him so he can try preventing something like this ever happening again
he never, ever wants you to be uncomfortable.
that’s the last thing that you deserve.
Zen
you’re trying to catch up on social media and your favorite TV shows when you hear keys clicking outside the apartment and the door creaking open
as soon as you look over, you see zen stumbling in
from the look on his face and his posture, it’s easy to tell that he’s had a horrible day on set
you try to comfort him and make conversation, but he only mumbles in reply while getting a beer out of the fridge
moments after he pops it open, your palms start getting sweaty and you freeze
you try to tell him that that makes you uncomfortable, but your voice only comes out as murmurs
“did you say something, jagiya?”
mkfadgmkklgadbmlwfklmbfmklfwkmlbaefl
you try again, stuttering out a more coherent statement on how mentions of or especially the presence of alcohol make you extremely anxious
right away, his eyes go wide and he sets his drink down
he sits down next to you on the couch and looks in your eyes, staying silent but you know what he’s asking
you gulp, take a deep breath, and tell him about your methyphobia and what it means
he has to ask a few questions, such as why this came to be and the like
when you tell him about your mom, he’s disgusted with her
he can’t believe it? how did such a wonderful person come out of such a bad family situation?
you really cannot believe he asked that when he came from a bad family too
after a lot of talking and venting from you, he promptly throws out all his alcohol and promises never to drink any or mention it to you again unless you’re okay with it
if you ever start panicking while eating out he’ll be by your side in a flash, rubbing your back and giving you breathing exercises or whatever you need
he’s 100% supportive of you, and he’ll give up any bad habit he needs to if it helps you at all
Jaehee
it’s a sunday, and a lot of families came to the café after church together
it was packed all day
when you get home, you try to unwind by binging jaehee’s bottomless collection of zen DVDs
she’s a little late, telling you she has to get something from the kitchen really fast and asks you if you want anything
you refuse, you’ve had dinner and you already have water
she understands, and dashes off
after about a minute of you setting up the DVD, she comes back with a cheese plate and a wine glass
as soon as you see the crimson liquid in the glass, your hands start to vibrate and shake furiously
you try to hide it by holding them tightly, but she notices before you tuck them away in your pockets
“is s-something wrong?? did i do something??”
she’s, so worried,
you’re a little hesitant to tell her but you’ve been dating for a few months and you have to tell her eventually, right?
through shaky breaths, you explain your methyphobia and why it came to be,
everything.
she never interrupts you, purely focusing on listening to you until you’re done after about 3 and a half minutes
afterwards, she apologizes for never asking if you’re comfortable with her relying on drinking wine as a stress reliever
she says how she doesn’t blame you in the slightest for not telling her sooner, it’s hard to trust people with such sensitive information and she would have struggled with it too.
you have a really long conversation about your lives and everything you struggle with talking about to others
you both forget all about the DVD
after you tell her that you’re starting to get sleepy, she dumps out the wine, puts the cheese away, and gives you honest to god the tightest hug you’ve ever gotten from someone.
as well as a kiss on the cheek heehee
she gives you a lot more cuddles that night
and when you’re both awake, she delays the shop opening so she can do as much research on methyphobia as a woman could possibly do in one morning
she’s very sensitive about it afterwards, and always makes sure that you don’t get reminded of alcohol (when she can help it)
Jumin
you’re playing with elizabeth the 3rd and waiting for jumin to come home when you get a call
speak of the devil!!
you pick up almost instantly, asking him how work is going and telling him what elizabeth has been doing all day
he lets out a small .. nose exhale? of a laugh before telling you that he actually called you to inform you of a sudden change of plans for the afternoon/evening
you’re really excited! you’re usually just stuck in the penthouse all day, without anything to do
so any chance to get out is a good thing, especially with jumin
right? eh
he continues, saying how he has to go to an event for work purposes
it turns out there’s a nearby wine tasting and there’s a lot of potential customers there
as he went, the smile on your face slowly fell until he said the word “wine” and any sign of joy was smacked out of you
your head started spinning, you were spluttering trying to think of an answer
“o-okay, i’ll s-s-see yo-you the-there”
fuck. shit what the fuck
he notices your panicking, but decides not to say anything and save it for later
“i’ll see you later, yes. have a good afternoon, my love. excuse me.”
and he hung up
and you sat down
and tried to gather your thoughts
fuckkrignnrjgts.df.g.t.gnntghntg/h.mgfnue3rnfnnsae943203t0reend what the, god damn,
you try to rationalize. you don’t have to be there for long. as C&R’s heir’s wife, you have to go to a lot of events
and all you had to was hold on to his arm and look pretty
if just most of the people there saw you with him, you could probably sneak off and go home early
so that’s what you decided on.
you picked out your dress, got one of the maids for advice on accessories, and you were ready to go
you were in the middle of psyching yourself up to leave when the door opened and your husband walked in
he commented on how nice you looked already, and excused himself to go change
it was about 10 minutes before he came back out and started to dial driver kim’s number
you had to say something
“w-wait.”
??
then it all came spilling out, the fact you couldn’t come to the wine tasting, your past alcoholic mother, and your horrible case of methyphobia
jumin stood there paralyzed for about 5 seconds straight before straightening up and
“okay. i’ll see you tonight then.”
??????????? WHAT
you really did not see that coming
he just… accepted the fact you couldn’t go
he could see the surprise in your face
you told him how you really expected him to be more dramatic about it, making a big show about how you had to be there.
“i’m hurt that you thought i would ever force you to do anything you would not like to. your comfort is more important than my image, MC.”
you basically imploded on the spot
jhhohOOOOOH  my god
you thanked him profusely, and told him to have a good time
he gave you a kiss
and then headed out
when he came back, he gave you a lot more affection than he did before
“affection” can mean whatever you want it to 👀👀👀
to be honest, i’ve been thinking for a while and i really just couldn’t think of a scenario about 707 drinking or bringing you into a situation where people are drinking? im sorry, i tried my best doing random HCs i thought of. it’s a lot less coherent than the other ones, but it’s better than nothing.
707
when he finds out, he’s shocked
what!
because you don’t really take medication or anything for your phobia since… you don’t need any honestly, there was no way for him to know via background check
he’s very sweet about it
even though he’s constantly memeing and joking around, he’s extremely cautious making jokes about alcohol
if anyone DARES to make fun of you for it or degrades you
honey
they’ve got a big storm coming
he’ll probably put a photo album of his cosplaying going on their phone for the next few months
lol
this boy understands anxiety, so if you ever are uncomfortable because it’s been mentioned or someone around you is drinking, he’ll either try to distract you with jokes or if need be, ZOOP you out of there right away and calm you down
he’s so much more protective of you, especially in public
if you tell him to stop he’ll stop though
he just wants you to know he’s always there for you
because you’re always there for him

a language that i never knew existed before - Day 12
Tumblr media
For @dawninthemtn, who asked for a modern AU in which “Ben Solo keeps trying to cancel his Book-A-Month subscription service, but just can't seem to say no to the friendly customer service agent”.
This was so much fun to write, especially since it allowed me to sneak some epistolary storytelling into this collection. Thanks for the prompt, and I hope you enjoy the ficlet!
Reylo fam! ‘Tis the season for giving, so come get your very own holiday ficlet right here!
25 Days of Reylo Also available on AO3
JUNE
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Cancellation/refund
My friend used my credit card to sign me up for a one-year YA subscription as a prank. I didn’t realize until the first box arrived today. I’d like to cancel the subscription and just pay for the box I’ve already received, if that’s okay.
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Re: Cancellation/refund
Hi, Ben! I’m so sorry to hear about your experience with our service.
Our refund policy allows you to change your mind anytime and get a full refund for boxes not yet received. But might I suggest changing boxes instead? At $29.99 per month for a box of three books with a combined retail value of up to $59.99, we’re the most affordable book service in the country! If YA isn’t your thing, we offer eleven other standard boxes, along with an option for customization.
If you’d like to give us a second chance, please take this quick quiz to determine the best box for you. The results will automatically be emailed to me upon completion, and I’d be happy to guide you through the selection process.
Best regards, Rey Niima, Customer service representative, Resistance Books.
JULY
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: First box!
Hi, Ben!
Your first sci-fi/fantasy box just shipped out today, and should reach you within three working days. I hope you enjoy the selection, and thank you again for choosing to stick with us!
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
Best regards, Rey Niima, Customer service representative, Resistance Books.
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Re: First box!
Hi, Rey.
Three working days, just like you said. Everything looks okay, thanks for your help.
Regards, Ben.
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Re: Re: First box!
Hi, Ben!
I’m glad to hear the box arrived on time! If you don’t mind, please keep me informed on how you like the selection. I’ve got a few other suggestions for you based on your quiz results, and I’d be happy to switch your subscription if you’re not absolutely pleased with the sci-fi/fantasy box.
Best regards, Rey Niima, Customer service representative, Resistance Books.
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Re: Re: Re: First box!
Hey, Rey.
I think that might be for the best. Sci-fi just isn’t what it used to be. Or maybe I’ve changed; it’s been a while since I last read anything in that genre.
Of course, if that’s too much trouble you can always just go ahead and process my refund. I’d hate to take up more of your time.
Regards, Ben.
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: First box!
Hi, Ben!
It’s no trouble at all! I first joined Resistance back when it was an actual store, and I’ve always loved matching readers up with the right book. As long as you’re okay with it, I’d like to keep going until we find you the right match.
My next suggestion for you based on your quiz results is one of our non-fiction boxes, the history/anthropology combo. Please let me know by the 23rd of this month if you’re interested in that so that I can arrange for the switch and shipping.
Best regards, Rey Niima, Customer service representative, Resistance Books.
AUGUST
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: New box
Hi, Rey. The box just arrived today, and the selection is perfect.
So perfect that I already pre-ordered all three of them earlier this year.
I think it’s pretty obvious that this service and I just aren’t meant to be, as great as it is. I really do appreciate all of your help, especially you taking the time to discuss books with me off the clock, but it’s probably time to call it.
Unless you’ve got a third suggestion?
Sincerely, Ben.
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Re: New box
What can I say? I’m good at my job – too good, in this case.
I’ve got at least three more suggestions for you, if you’d like to keep going. And your box should have come with a return ticket, if you’d like to send it back; I don’t see the point in you keeping the duplicates, unless you have a friend with the same unique taste in books? I’d be happy to process the return and credit it to your account. Same goes for your first two boxes; I’m sorry I forgot to mention it earlier.
I’ve actually really missed talking about books with someone, so really, thank you for humoring me. If you ever feel like debating the SWEU again, feel free to reach me at 555-3494. I like that things can get heated when we talk about those books, but it’s probably for the best if I don’t argue with a customer on my work email.
Best regards, Rey Niima, Customer service representative, Resistance Books.
SEPTEMBER
Rey: So technically we’re not supposed to tell anyone about this yet But Wait You still collect comics, right?
Ben: You make me sound like a teenage boy. I collect graphic novels, yes. Why?
Rey: You say potayto, I say potahto ANYWAY I know you’re not 100% happy with the customized box
Ben: They’re your picks for me, of course I’m happy with them.
Rey: Ben
Ben: I am! I’m just not happy with the fact that I barely get any time to read. And when I do get an hour to myself, my brain is too tired for anything intellectual.
Rey: You cutthroat lawyers and your ridiculous endless work Back to my point
Ben: You have one?
Rey: Very funny, Solo Okay so next month we’re announcing a special new box Limited time only And we’re only opening it up to 200 subscribers
Ben: Sounds like a big deal. What do we get, hand-bound manuscripts?
Rey: Even better Two trades and a hardcover, no extra charge
Ben: You’re kidding me.
Rey: Nope Completely serious You in?
Ben: Hey, Rey? No offence but that’s the stupidest question you’ve ever asked me.
Rey: Whatever, nerd I’ll sign you up
Ben: You’re my favorite person right now, thank you.
Rey: Careful, Solo Keep saying nice shit and I might actually start to like you
Ben: And we wouldn’t want that, of course.
Rey: Of course
OCTOBER
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Congratulations!
Hi there, Ben!
Your assigned customer service representative recently entered you for a chance to win one of our 200 limited-time-only comic box subscriptions.
We’re very pleased to let you know that you made the cut! .
Rey: Did you get the email???
Ben: Just read it. Can’t wait for the first box. Thanks, Rey. By the way, sign me up for the extension thing.
Rey: Can you believe how far we’ve come? It feels like just yesterday that you were trying to cancel your subscription at every turn
Ben: For what it’s worth, I’m glad I didn’t. So fucking glad. I wouldn’t have gotten to know you otherwise.
Rey: Stop, you’ll make me cry Ben? I’m happy we’re friends too
NOVEMBER
Rey: Is it there yet?
Ben: Rey. It’s been two hours. I haven’t even left the office yet.
Rey: Okay, NOW is it there yet?
Ben: Still at work. You’re the one who shipped it, can’t you track the package or something?
Rey: I could But I think I prefer it this way
Ben: Of course you do. You’re lucky I have no other friends.
Rey: As if you’d stop talking to me even if you had a hundred other friends I’m your favorite
Ben: Says who? Maybe Poe’s my favorite. I’ve known him since childhood, after all.
Rey: Poe is a prankster and you fucking hate him
Ben: I wouldn’t say hate.
Rey: Ben He stole your credit card and signed you up for a year’s worth of YA books
Ben: And if he hadn’t done that, you and I would never have met.
Rey: We haven’t Met, I mean Shit I don’t even know what you look like BRB, I’m gonna go stalk you on social
Ben: Honestly, I just assumed you already did.
Rey: Wow, I’m offended HOLY HELL, BEN
Ben: So you’ve found me. If this is about the ears no, I don’t know what the fuck’s going on there either. No one in my family does.
Rey: What ears? Your ears are FINE, silly I was talking about your hair Christ, do you shampoo with unicorn blood or something???
Ben: That would be very soulless lawyer of me, wouldn’t it?
Rey: Shut up, you’re not soulless Funless, maybe, but I’d like to think I’m helping with that
Ben: You are. In the interest of fairness, I’m going to stalk you too.
Rey: Not much to see, but go right ahead Ben? Wow did I scare you off already? And here I thought that was a decent picture
Ben: Shit, sorry. Got pulled into a meeting. It’s a great picture.
Rey: You don’t have to say that
Ben: Well, it is and I mean it. And… I hope this isn’t creepy but I love your smile.
Rey: Not creepy at all By the way I like your eyes
DECEMBER
To: [email protected] From: [email protected] Subject: Come celebrate the holidays with us!
Hi, Ben!
Did you know that before Resistance Books went online and became the #1 book delivery service in the country, we were a tiny little indie store known as Gatalenta?
This holiday season, we’re returning to our roots – and we’d love for you to join us! Resistance Books will be participating in the annual Coruscant Christmas Market with our very own pop-up store from the 15th of December onwards!
This is a great time for you to come on by and check out the full range of our diverse offerings. And if something catches your eye, you’ll be able to bring it home with you for the same incredibly reasonable rate you know and love – pick any three books from our store for just $29.99!
We hope to see you there!
Warmest wishes, Amilyn Holdo, Founder and president, Resistance Books.
.
Rey: Hey, did you get the email about the pop-up store?
Ben: Yeah, I was just about to text you. I just realized your boss is a friend of my mom’s. Anyway, this is probably extremely unlikely but Will you be there?
Rey: Seriously?? That’s so weird And yes, actually I’ll be helping out 21st-25th, 11AM-8PM
Ben: You’re working on Christmas?
Rey: You know me Not like I’ve got anything else to do
Ben: Okay, feel free to say no but… What if I go on Christmas? We’d get to discuss books in person And maybe after your shift we could hang out? I haven’t been to the CCM in years, but Maz’s Cantina used to make the best hot chocolates.
Rey: Books, hot chocolate, and finally getting to meet my mysterious Internet stranger? Ben Solo, you’ve got yourself a date
Ben: Great! I mean Cool. I can’t wait. See you then.
Rey: See you!
Ben: Hey, so I just woke up and you’re not here Which is fine, it’s your choice to make And last night can be whatever you want it to be But… Rey, I know what I want it to be I know we moved fast, but yesterday meant a lot to me You mean a lot to me I just… I just want to make sure you know that before you make a decision And the decision’s yours to make, completely I’ll go along with whatever you want As long as we’re at least still friends Because I don’t think I could bear to lose you entirely, Rey Fuck, I don’t think I could bear to lose you at all Shit, sorry, that’s too much I’ll stop now Just… text me back, please?
Rey: Babe I’m in the kitchen Hurry up, breakfast is getting cold And Ben? You mean a lot to me too ❤
This is a little over two thousand words and stopped being about tsundoko about halfway through (if it even was in the first place), but it was such a fun idea to play with and I hope the format doesn’t get in the way of the story. I thought emails and texts would help me keep things short, but obviously that didn’t pan out.
Anyway, thanks for reading as always and I hope you liked it. Please don’t hesitate to like/reblog/comment!

The Silence
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Summary: Rose(OC) is assigned the job of talking to Negan in his Cell.
Chapter Eleven
"Rose... what have you done?" Rick's voice made the seriousness of the situation sink in all at once, even through the radio.
"I had to." She replied.
"Have you any idea how dangerous what you did was? How wrong it could have gone?"
"Yes." She said simply.
"Then why did you do it?!" She winced at how angry he sounded.
"I had to." She shrugged despite him not being able to see her.
"We'll talk about this when I get home."
"Yes, Dad." She sneered thrusting the radio back at Michonne. "I wouldn't change it." She told the woman before storming off.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 24 hours earlier XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"Rose!" She heard her voice being shouted just as she was about to leave out of the gate. It had been just over a month since the re-building of the bridge had begun and progress was a little slow so she had decided to see how she could help. Turning she saw one of the younger men who sometimes helped with Negan, Eddie running towards her.
"What's up?"
"It's Negan."
"Of course..." She sighed. "What has he done?"
"You know how theres a bad bug goin' round?" He asked making Rose nod. "I think he's got it. I don't know what to do... Rick's out like always right now and Michonne's at Hilltop."
"Shit..." her shoulders dropped at the prospect of an ill Negan, what the hell was she supposed to do with one of those? "C'mon." She stared to walk back into Alexandria, towards where Negan was, with Eddie following. "Has he been vomiting?"
"Yeah..." Eddie sighed with a look of disgust. "Its seriously disgusting, man. I didn't sign up for that shit you know?!"
"I know." She sighed but all she could think about was poor Negan stuck in that cell so ill.
The smell hit her straight away, it was the unmistakeable scent of illness but in no way she'd ever smelt before and as she entered to see him all but collapsed over a bucket, dry heaving she couldn't help but panic.
"Negan!" She shouted. "Are you okay?" He just lifted his head with a look which made her imagine him saying 'are you fuckin' kiddin' me right now, princess?' in his mind.
"How long has he been like this?" She quickly asked Eddie.
"Shit.. I dunno. He was like this when I came in here this mornin'." She knew that must have meant he'd been like this at least four or five hours.
"Have you given him any water or anything?" She watched incredulously as the young man shook his head and majorly had to bite her tongue to stop her telling him how much of an idiot she thought he was.
What the hell was she supposed to do!? She couldn't keep him in here with no fresh air, no access to a toilet, a dirty floor and a bucket, it just wasn't right but where could she put him?!
"Fuck it." She said. "Give me the keys."
"Wh..what?"
"You heard me." Rose looked him dead in the eyes not backing down. "Give me the damn keys!"
"I can't. Rick said not to give them to anybody except Michonne..."
That shocked her and angered her in equal measures. Did Rick not trust her?
"Look at him!" She spat. "I couldn't give two fucks what Rick says he is not staying in that cell like this!"
"I can't..."
"If you don't give me those keys I will shove my foot so far up your god damn ass that you..."
"Woah woah woah... Rose there's no need for threats." Rose noticed his hand go to the gun on his hip. "I can't give you these keys. You can't let him out!" The young man looked so scared that Rose almost felt sorry for him, she understood, she really did that all this boy knew of Negan was the horrific things he had done.
"Take your hand off of your gun, Eddie." She said calmer now. "This is getting ridiculous. Just give me the keys so I can take him to the infirmary. That's where he needs to be... he's sick. I'll be careful." She stared at him hoping she was giving him her most trustworthy look. He seemed to be calming down and thinking about her requests when a banging from the bars next to them made them both jump, Negan had crashed into them exhaustedly.
"If you lay..." Negan's voice was weak but still rough enough to hold power which amazed her. "...one finger on her fuckin' head I swear to god one day I will make you regret ever leavin' your mama's pussy."
If Rose had thought Eddie had looked frightened before he now looked utterly terrified and her, too shocked at the effect Negan could still have on people even just through stories they had heard about him just stood there wide eyed and slack jawed.
"Okay but you better tell Rick it wasn't my fault." Eddie held his hands up with the keys hanging from one of his fingers which Rose snatched from him, quickly turning to unlock the gate. Later when everything was calmer she would realise that she hadn't thought twice about unlocking it, scooping her arm around his waist and helping him out and into the street with no handcuffs or back up.
Shocked by how light he felt she didn't struggle too much to get him there but was still out of breath by the time she helped him onto the random bed in the infirmary. He instantly laid down on it sighing loudly.
Grabbing the bag she still had on her back from nearly heading out she pulled out her water bottle, grabbed a couple of pillows and stood next to his bed.
"I know you're tired but I need you to drink this okay?" She said softly as she lifted him to push the comfy pillows underneath him, making him moan at the comfort he hadn't had in so long. He took the water and sipped it before relaxing back into the bed with a moan.
"You really are a fuckin' angel." He told her quietly.
"And you really are the devil." She laughed. "Did you see poor Eddie's face?"
"Served him fuckin' right..." He took a deep breath to fight away the nausea. "Even just for the thought of hurtin' you." Rose's heart squeezed at the sentiment, that he would care that much when he was so sick.
"How are you feeling?" She asked grabbing a cloth from the cabinet next to her and wetting it before lifting it to his forehead. His head leaned into the touch even though it was just a cloth, his eyes were heavy but still watching her with a look that Rose had seen many times before. A look that kept her questioning her sanity.
"Better now... thank you."
Rose shrugged. "It's nothing."
"No... it isn't." He sounded drowsy and she desperately hoped it was just exhaustion from the illness as she was not equipped to deal with anything else. "Sip a little more of this for me, okay." She told him as she passed him the bottle. After quickly checking his temperature which was higher than normal but nothing alarming she sat beside him quietly letting him sleep.
She knew it wouldn't be long until somebody came along disturbing their peace but until then she just sat alternating between watching him, feeling creepy about it and then looking out of the window. Every now and again patting his face down with the cold cloth to which he would push his face towards, she even stroked his head very gently the way she always liked when she was sick. He would make little sighing noises when she did certain things like stroke his head and it made it harder and harder to be able to connect this man with the one who did the crimes he was paying for now.
But she would always remember that it was he same man. How could she not?
Sure enough at their peace was ruined as Siddiq entered the room followed by Eddie to see the prisoner and Rose both asleep. Rose still sat in the chair beside his bed only awakened by the loud clearing of the medics throat.
"Oh my god!" She cried as she jumped, Negan beside her groggily sitting up looking for what had made her cry out. "It's fine, lie down." She told him.
"Rose..." Siddiq said to Rose, warily watching Negan. "Can I talk to you? Eddie watch him."
"Oh don't leave me with Eddie..." Negan moaned only to stop whatever he was going to say with one pointed look from Rose.
"What do you think you're doing?!" He snapped at the woman once she had joined him out of the room.
"What do you mean?" Rose chose to act oblivious.
"Rick sends me back here because there's a bug going around... I get to the infirmary and Eddie's stood outside a nervous wreck saying you and Negan bullied him into giving you the keys!"
"That little shit..." She said through gritted teeth. "You're a doctor right... I honestly think you'd have done the same, I couldn't leave him in there! He has the bug and he was being sick into a bucket for gods sake... the conditions he's in aren't fit for a human nevermind a fucking sick one!" The more she talked about it the angrier she got at the fact that she had to explain basic empathy to people. "He needed fresh air, light, comfort, somewhere to be sick that wasn't a metre away!"
He seemed to take in everything she had said and then slowly nodded his head making Rose feel relieved that she might have at least one person on her side. "We'll keep him here until he's better... it usually clears within twenty four hours."
"Thank you." She sighed.
"Don't thank me... you're right." He smiled at her before going to walk back in. "Im gonna go check him over, you coming?"
"Of course." She followed him in and stayed there the whole time before sitting back down next to him.
It was turning dark when Rose trying to get Negan to eat was interrupted. Michonne entered the infirmary to see Rose stood at Negan's bedside holding a bowl and laughing at something he had said, no handcuffs in sight.
"What the hell is this?!" Michonne snapped.
The pair turned to the other woman, Rose's eyes wide while Negan had his usual grin upon his face. He saw Rose's entire body stiffen as she stood in front of his bed and he realised she was standing herself between him and Michonne, he wanted to get out of bed and stand up next to her but he knew it wouldn't help.
"He's sick."
"That's why he's locked up, Rose."
"No..." Rose sighed. "He's actually sick. You know the bug that's been going around? He has it."
"That doesn't explain why he's here."
"You expect me to leave him in a dark, damp cell to be sick into a bucket?" Rose asked with a slight edge to her voice.
"Yes." Michonne said completely stone faced. "Other people have it and I don't see them in the infirmary."
"Yeah because they have houses..."
"He's going back to his cell." Michonne said walking over to them. "Now."
"No. He isn't." Rose held her ground for him, yet again.
"Rose..." Michonne said warningly.
"I couldn't give a shit what you or anybody else has to say this man is sick for gods sake and I am not letting him go back into that cell!"
Negan for once was completely lost for words seeing this woman stand up for him was something he had never expected.
"He's being cuffed to the bed then."
"What if he has to be sick?"
"Your problem not mine."
Rose let out a sound that came close to a growl making Negan watch her in admiration. Sure Rose could handle herself but Michonne was on another level and had a massive sword.
"Rose. I feel a lot better..." he said gently. As much as he preferred the comfy bed and the pillows and having her next to him without bars he didn't want to cause any trouble for her.
"No..." her voice quivered as her shoulders fell.
"It's okay..." he said softly from behind her, completely thrown off by her emotional reaction.
Only a single tear left her eyes before she composed herself, not wanting to show either of the other people in the room how she truly felt about this. Which was just... so unbelievably sad. She cared about Negan no matter if it was just out of concern for another human or a connection with him... she didn't know and it didn't matter. All she knew is that she was sad when she thought of him all alone in that cell.
When she thought about him sick and nobody caring.
Sad at the thought of people not even giving him the time of day when he was probably just so lonely and bored.
That he wouldn't ever have a normal life...
He would never be able to be with someone.
"No! No it's not!" She shouted. "This is cruel! The whole thing is so cruel. For fucks sake he'd be better off dead! Rick decided to keep him alive so it's his responsibility to give him the basic fucking human rights! I'm sick of everyone pretending he's not down there!" Her voice cracked but she kept herself strong. "He is sick." She said with a tone of finality.
"I'm going to radio Rick."
"Yeah you do that!" Rose snapped as she watched the woman leave the room.
"Rose..." Negan started.
"Don't..." she held her hand up to stop him still feeling a little vulnerable and not wanting to talk about it but of course Negan didn't care. He grabbed the wrist of the hand she held up and dragged her to where he was sitting on the bed, wrapping his arms around her, one hand on the back of her head to hold her in the crook of his neck.
She stood between his legs in a very intimate way and let her arms fall around his waist as she let it all out.
"Why the fuck am I the one who's crying?!" She laughed in between tears.
"Is it that time of the month, darlin?" His voice was a quiet rumble, her favourite way to hear his voice. She punched him in the side while her other arm still wrapped around him. "Seriously though, Rose." He held her face inbetween his hands and looked her in the eyes. "I don't deserve you're tears... I did things that I chose to do. Bad, fucked up shit." He pulled her back into the crook of his neck rocking side to side. "I don't deserve them. I don't." He whispered.
"I know you don't..." she cried knowing that part of the reason that she was so upset was the confusion she felt towards her feelings for him. Her thoughts were disrupted by the feel of something hard digging into her belly, when she realised what it was she gasped jumping backwards.
"Oh my god! Negan! Way to ruin the moment."
He just sat there laughing loudly watching the beautiful woman who had caused the perfectly normal male reaction in him blushing like crazy.
"What?! I'm human ya know... when a beautiful woman's presss up against me..."
"Yeah yeah I know it's been a while." She scoffed. He didn't want her to think that what happened was something he couldn't control, hell, sure it had been a while but that didn't make him some pre pubescent boy again. It was her that made him not be able to control himself.
"A long while of imagining all the things I'd do to you, Rose." He rasped making the room suddenly go very hot as she stood there not knowing what to do or say, he could see that he had an effect on her and with anybody else he would have pointed it out more. Probably made fun of her for it. But not Rose. Taking pity on her he gestured towards the bowl of soup she had been forcing on him earlier. "Let me try some of that. If I can keep it down take me back to that hell hole."
"Okay. Deal." She nodded before passing him the soup.
Much to both Rose and Negan's disappointment the watery soup and stale bread stayed down and he was walked back to his cell by Eddie and Siddiq. Apparently Michonne was waiting for Rose with a radio call from Rick.
Great.

Ducktales Big-Big Brother :One-shot: (Fenton)
(This took longer that I would have liked xD)
————————————————
Hueys eyes was flooding with uncontrollable tears as he sat on the field, his legs had given up on him from shock and that was teen minutes ago, but even so he still couldn’t think clear “T-th-this this is a nightmare it has to be a nightmare?!”
He repeated to himself in his head over and over again.
But even if he kept saying it he could still feel the cold shadows that they where casting on the ground creeping closer as the sun was setting and the cold breeze made his little form shiver.
After a couple minutes the eleven year old finally lifts his tired and hurting head from his arms and looks around and as he does a new flow of big fat tears begins to build up in his eyes before flowing down his red cheeks.
From the left of him was his brothers standing a few feet apart from each other both having a look of terror on their young stoney faces as they have their heads pointed to the middle of the field, his beloved uncle Donald and Webby had both been running towards the middle, his uncle with a determined face on him and Webby with a glare with a hint of worry. Lena was standing close to Scrooge with a terrifying face expression as her head was looking towards Webby’s direction with a hand out, and Scrooge was holding a shielding arm in front of his face with his eyes closed tightly.
Huey takes a long good look at the statues before finally giving out a loud and painful sob as his eyes lands on the smallest of the statues and at last he lets it all out with no care in the world of how loud he was being.
———————————
Fenton couldn’t stop looking at direction of the Mcducks home every few minutes, it had almost been 2 hours since the last of the injured people from the weird invasion had been help into the green medical tents that had been put up in town center, he had been fighting of those weird shadows when a big purple glowing wave had come and washed them away, it had come from we’re he had seen his boss run to he would and had followed Scrooge but got told that the town needed him more.
“So im guessing your not listening to me?” Fentons eyes swifts to the person he hadn’t hear talking
“s-sorry i didn’t hear you there what did you say” The big armor says in a hurrying voice with a big smile on his beak and clearly embarrassed about not catching the inventors words before.
Gyro makes a annoyed sound before looking at Fenton again, “if my calculations are right and im sure on it!” He begins with his normal stony face expression “that it have been two hours and twenty thre-“ he stops and looks at his very weird looking arm watch before beginning again “that it has been two hours twenty three minuets AND! Twenty-nine milliseconds since the weird purple glowing pulse wave made those amalgamations disappear” he finishes with a know it all smile before realizing that he had be talking to himself.....again.
“Well you are very rude today aren’t you?” But he doesn’t get a response from the metal figure standing beside him and he rolls his eyes before slamming a fist on gizmoducks right shoulder, a loud “HEY” was all he got before he finally gets his attention again “you know that the task you got put on from the boss is done right?” A confused “...yeah?” Was the only response he got.
Gyro just couldn’t stop himself for putting his hand on his face with a loud annoying sounding sigh following the action “ then WHY are you still standing here!”
Fenton looks around the town center before looking back at the inventor “i-i just don’t want t- to...intervene you know” he sigh “okay now that i say it out loud it doesn’t sound logical anymore” he finally says before looking back at his good but complicated friend in defeat, “then go..” Gyro says before looking at the direction himself with a now more softer expression on him.
There’s silence for a few seconds before a single “yeah” came from Fenton that after that began rolling in the direction of the mcducks property.
————————————————
It didn’t take long before he finally found the source from where the weird *pulse wave* as Gyro called it came from,
“not again!” Fenton almost yells after getting the suits wheel stuck in a bush again as he was following the helmets radar system “why in a forest!” he hissed under his breath as he pushes more branches away from his path.
After a few minutes he finally came to a clearing, and he began to look around the the area in search of any sign of anything out of the ordinary....but saw nothing from where he was standing and it was first when he tried going around the random placed rocks, is when he stopped....dead in his tracks it was first now he realized what he saw in front of him wasn’t any big rock...they where....statues.
It felt like someone had put a ice cube down his back, he slowly turned around to look at the statues he had already passed by....wasn’t that the loud angry duck he had seen in the bank a couple months earlier he thought as he looked at the stoney duck facing him.
Fenton began feeling sick after he had discovered his boss and...the kids, but he mostly couldn’t stop looking at the statue extended on a pillar of stone in the middle, the woman had a face full of regret and terror as she was looking down at her hands, and thats when Fenton hear the almost silence footsteps behind one of the natural stones.
“Hello?” Fenton looked over at the big rock “I-I’m not gonna hurt you” he tried to say in a calm voice and before he could say anything else a little head popped out from behind the rock with a face of recognition.
Huey could almost not feel the feeling of relief in his heart because of its shattered feeling state it already was in after at he had been alone for hours with his desisted family members.
he didn’t approach gizmo instead he bowed his head so he was looking at the ground as he felt another break down coming, after a couple of seconds he hear the sound of a wheel moving and a shadow laid itself over him.
He felt a big hand on his head and Huey looked up at the hero with very red and bluish colors on his face, Fenton looked around one more time “w-what happene-...” but he stopped and looked down at the kid again
but because of the helmet Huey couldn’t see what his hero may have been thinking and as if Fenton had read his mind he took the helmet of and smiled warmly down at the kid that had helped him so much.
“you must be freezing, lets get you to somewhere warm” he said as he let Huey open his arm so Fenton could pick him gently of the ground.
———————————————
The rest of that weeks memories was almost a blur for Fenton, the only thing he really remembers was coming back to Gyro, his Mama had been standing with the inventor waiting for him to return, and it hadn’t been easy telling them about what he had seen, but his mama had quickly recovered when he told that the child in his arms may have become a orphan because of the event, and she almost ripped Huey from his arm and into a big hug with a lot of sweet words following trying to calm the kid.
The next thing he remember is sitting by their dinner table a couple days after with the kid while his mama was at the door with a person needing to take the kid with them, but after trying to convince person that the kid was a witness in the mcduck case she yelled out loud “Well then we should get down to your office! Because im not letting you put a hand on him!” Before she looked back at
a shocked Fenton and Huey with a normal smile as if she didn’t just said she was going to adopt a child she hardly knew and then took her jacked and left out the door leaving a silence son and soon to be adopted son looking at each other.
——————————————
*SPLASH!*
“Aaah!” Fenton got taken out of his flashback after getting splashed with cold water “Hey stop dreaming down there!” A voice came from above him “You said that you wanted to help with this old thing so stop dreaming and start helping!” Fenton looked up at Huey that was sitting on the almost cleaned house boat, Huey had wanted to renovate it after it had been sitting abandoned in the marine for almost four years.
“Sorry but next time do anything els than water okay!” Fenton looked down at his clothes “now i have to find something else to the rest of the day” he finished in a irritating voice but with a smile on him as he looked back up at the fifteen year old duck that was in a laughing mess rolling around the roof.
