Extra 2: Generally, this blog operates under the assumption that Slade knows (or at has a clue he ignores) about Batman’s identity, but does not reveal it. Whether that also applies to his wards is negotiable, as is him knowing in the first place.

Extra 3: Mun does not currently have access to XKit. As such, long-form RP will be answered on new posts with a mention and a tag as a temporary solution to post trimming, with the previous post linked at the top.)

1. Do not force actions onto my muse.

2. This blog is based on the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon version of Slade Wilson. As such, there is little to no comic influence here outside of minor backstory components and more details on Slade’s occupation. Apologies.

3. Any explicit or inappropriate plotlines will not be acknowledged.

4. The mun is not the muse. Slade Wilson is an antagonistic character and by nature will say and do things that are in line with his cartoon counterpart. That said, if at any time you feel pressured or uncomfortable, please say so. This is all in the pursuit of fun, not stress.

5. Shipping is probably unlikely to happen, at least for a while. I do not ship my muse with minors (or characters who are minors.)

6. Blog is loosely selective. Since this is a sideblog with a private main it cannot operate on mutuals only, but please be aware that not all messages will result in long form RP. Most will get at least one response.

7. I tend to write multi-paragraph replies, but joke RP and ask answers are often short and sweet. It’s not necessary to match length as long as there is something to go off of.

Based almost entirely on Slade from Teen Titans (2003) with a select few inclusions relating to his occupation, belated-family/associations, and general perspective, which are mostly used for context purposes to give the character more depth. More traditionally villainous, at least in the eyes of other people, he seems like he takes on work simply for his own amusement, though it often feels he has grander plans than meet the eye. Teen Titans (2003) canon-compliant. Post-series.

DEATHSTROKE (tag: verse; deathstroke)

|-> Secondary Verse, currently in trial stages.

Rougher combination of Slade Wilson from the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon and his various comic counterparts. Goes by the alias Deathstroke and occupies his more typical mercenary role. Speaks more casually and is more of a neutral force who follows the money. Naturally opposed to the batfamily (and other heroes by proxy) due to occupation rather than personal grudges. Not specifically compliant to any one comic or television run. Possesses his usual healing factor, eidetic memory, extensive weapons training, etcetera.

“Kid, this isn’t something you should be involved in. Not that it’s my business—just your funeral.”

SECOND WIND (tag: verse; second wind)

|-> Variant of SLADE verse. Takes place at any time mid-series (Teen Titans (2003)).

Instead of taking on a obviously antagonistic role in efforts to break Robin’s spirit, Slade turns to a more subtle approach to gaining his loyalty, believing that he may be able to mold (manipulate) the boy into becoming his successor willingly. While the apprenticeship begins the same way, he puts effort into breaking down the notions Robin has of him and his identity as a hero. By the time Robin’s teammates realize what’s he has planned, it may already be too late. Still the villainous version of his 2003 character, just with a bit more foresight. Non-canon compliant past the apprentice arc.

WHO NEEDS ENEMIES (tag: verse; who needs enemies)

Slade’s plans to recruit a wayward Robin into his apprenticeship have long since succeeded, gaining the boy’s trust and—perhaps unintentionally—giving some of his own in turn. He now takes his apprentice and successor, Renegade, on more complex and dangerous jobs with every intention of the boy taking over for him one day. AU equivalent of SLADE verse. Theoretically post-series, but non-canon-compliant past the apprentice arc.

enjoy your stay - chapter five

A/N - Just for now, I’m trialing not putting in chapter links on this post to see if it helps more people see it since the tumblr search function cuts out posts with links. CHAPTER FIVE ↳Your work friends help encourage you to straighten out your problems with Jin, but is there really such an easy solution?

Over the week that had passed since you had breakfast with Hobi and Jimin, it became a daily occurrence for the three of you to wander along the main street, finding a dinky little overpriced café to hole up in and hang out for an hour or so.

It was nice hanging out with them outside of work hours, especially when all your past jobs had been filled with toxic competitiveness or people way older than you. You had never really made any work friends before, but if anyone asked you, you wouldn’t hesitate to call Hobi and Jimin your friends.

Today was the first time the three of you had managed to step into a coffeeshop that was actually any good. It had kind of become an inside joke that at one point you’d just end up going back to the hotel to use the staffroom amenities, that at least they were more reliable than the places you’d been going to, but for once the food was good and the hot chocolate with a raspberry shot you got was divine.

“Ugh, these people aren’t prepared for the sick tip I’m about to drop in the glass jar,” Hobi enthuses, “it’s honestly a blessing having a coffee that doesn’t taste burnt.” You wondered how Hoseok ever managed to get to sleep with the double shot black coffee he always chose, but the man did have a habit of constantly surprising you.

Jimin puffed out his cheeks and let out a stream of cooling air over the surface of his mocha. “Shouldn’t you be saving up your money for your share of the cake?” Jungkook’s birthday was in a few days, and as it turned out the hotel night staff had a habit of celebrating each staff member’s birthday. Jungkook had only been working there eight months, and it was his first birthday working for Namjoon, and his 21st no less. You had promised to a stressed-out Joon that you would organize it for him, and the three of you had decided to go thirds in a cake for him, while Jin was going to make kimchi stew for a shared dinner. “Man, if you flake on me again, I’m getting you coal for your birthday.”

“I said I would pay!” Hobi defends himself emphatically, holding his palms out. “Besides, let’s just say I have a…secondary source of income now,” he wiggles his eyebrows meaningfully.

Jimin frowns at him dubiously. “I already told you - you don’t have the ass to be a stripper.”

“What, and you do?” Jimin simply raises an eyebrow in silence. “Okay, that’s beside the point, what I’m trying to say is that I got a job helping out Yoongi during the day.”

Your mouth flops open. “Accountant Yoongi?”

“What other Yoongi is there? Yes, Accountant Yoongi.”

You frown at him in suspicion. “What could you possibly have to offer him?”

Hoseok lets out a strangled cough of indignance. “Excuse me, but I am a man of many talents! And for a busy man like him, sometimes it’s more convenient to buy talents than take the time to pursue them naturally, you know?”

Jimin’s eyes have narrowed into slits, and he would look menacing were it not for the foamed milk moustache sitting on his upper lip. “He pays you to fuck him?”

“Hey!” Hoseok glances around the room to make sure nobody heard, but he doesn’t deny it.

The bellboy pouts and throws his teaspoon on the table dramatically. “Why do you get all the good things in life?” He sighs. “That’s like…the dream.”

You shake your head, still processing. “How did you even- How you do get into that? Did he wander up one day with a business proposal? That’s so wild,” you exclaim in a hushed whisper.

Jimin smirks. “Why, wanting to make your own business arrangement, baby? I’m right here.”

You glare at him beseechingly. “Hobi’s getting paid and you think I’m going to let you fuck me for free? Get real.” Over the past few coffee dates the flirtations between you and Jimin had gotten way more explicit than they ever could at the hotel, and at this point you wondered if he would even take the chance if he was given it, since he seemed to get so much joy just out of teasing you.

“Oh no, baby, I think you’re the Yoongi in this situation. After all, you did try and pimp me out to Taehyung last week.”

“Okay, you know very well that that was blackmail, we’ve been over the Taetastrophe before, I was just playing matchmaker, it’s not at all indicative of… of how I usually am.”

Hobi scoffs into his coffee and shakes his head bemusedly. Jimin grins, catlike. “So you normally prefer somebody else to take control, then?”

You stare at him for a moment. “…Anyway, Hobi, you still haven’t told us how this whole sugar daddy thing works. Feel free to share with the group.”

He looks up from absentmindedly stirring his drink. “Well, there’s an app, and it sorts you out by location, and it just happens that the number of rich gays in the area is limited, so really it was kinda inevitable that we would be matched up.”

You frown. “Oh. I was expecting a little more romance, passion and intrigue, you know? That’s boring.”

Hoseok turns to you. “I never said there wasn’t passion and intrigue. Have you ever gone down on a guy while he’s having an important Skype meeting with Chinese investors? Cause I have.”

You break out into a scandalized blush, but Jimin just lets out a short laugh. “Damn, Hoseok, I cannot believe the receptionist is getting more action than the bellboy. I mean, have you seen how hot my thighs look in these pants? It’s sinful that Namjoon lets me wear them, but he knows I bring in the customers, so he won’t say anything.” Jimin shifts in his seat and stares you down. “Speaking of action, has your sad little slobberfest in the kitchen actually gone anywhere? I’m surprised he hasn’t asked you to dinner yet.”

You let out a defeated moan around your last mouthful of hot chocolate. “No, and for a while he’d leave cute little gifts and stuff around, but I feel like maybe he really did just want some reassurance in a tough time and that he’s not actually interested…” you trail off when Hoseok and Jimin share a meaningful look. “What? Has he talked to you guys about me?”

The receptionist scratches under his collar awkwardly, and Jimin looks a little guilty. After a few attempts to get the gossip out of them, Jimin finally lets out a deep sigh. “He does like you, honestly, but… Look, he’s heard some other staff, and guests, talk about you, and he doesn’t want it to be a competition, so he’s giving you some space. Poor guy probably thinks you’re already taken.”

Your frown deepens. “What do you mean? Who’s been talking about me?”

He glances up at the ceiling for a few moments, working his jaw, then looks down again. “All of us, Y/n. I’m honestly surprised you haven’t noticed. Hobi’s probably the only one who doesn’t, but now I realize that’s probably just because Yoongi wears him out.” You let out a shaky laugh when Hoseok nods sadly, but your face is still twisted up in confusion. “Jin’s not a competitive guy, babe. If you want to be with him, you have to let him know, otherwise he’ll just carry on acting like nothing’s happened. He’s not very confrontational. He just doesn’t want to create any tension between the guys, that’s all.”

Your mind races at a hundred miles an hour, trying to catch up. This is surely the weirdest conversation you’ve had in a mom-and-pop coffee shop, and you’re still trying to process everything. “Wait, you said guests, too?”

Hoseok hums in affirmation. “Taehyung’s been kinda bragging to Jungkook about the fact that he’s had you in his room multiple times. Technically it’s true, but he makes it seem like the two of you are a thing. Jungkook idolizes Jin, so the news got back to him pretty fast. I’m sorry, muppet, the whole situation is kind of a mess. We should’ve told you sooner, but we figured you must’ve already known.”

You shake your head slowly, brushing off his apology. Tae was acting like the two of you had sex? How were you going to face sweet Jungkook at his party knowing that he probably thought you had fucked his friend? Hoseok was right, the whole situation was fucked up.

You stare into the dregs of cocoa at the bottom of your mug. “What do I even do? I don’t want people to think any less of me, much less for something that never actually happened.”

Jimin shrugs. “I mean, the two of us are on the same page as you, so don’t worry about us. You just need to work out which of the other guys you want to explain things to first and go from there. Work out some priorities, girl, or this whole drama will end in tears.”

You nod, resigned to your fate, and get up from your seat. “I’ll see you two later tonight, then. I’ve got a call to make.”

You made in home in a little over twenty minutes, quickly changed out of your work clothes into some pajamas and sat on the couch staring at your phone for way too long, finger hovering over Jin’s name in your contacts list.

Should you call him now and wake him or just wait until work tonight? It was already quite late, or rather, early, and you wanted to get a decent sleep. No matter when you spoke with Jin, you still had Tae and Jungkook to sort out. It was going to be an intense shift.

Clenching your eyes shut, deciding to bite the bullet, you call him, and try to still your racing heart as the rings echoed in your empty apartment.

Five, then six, then seven, until you considered just hanging up. Finally, on the ninth ring, the call goes through and Jin’s delightfully deep voice calls out your name.

“I’m sorry for waking you, but I really needed to talk to you.” It’s only when you get this far that you realize you actually haven’t planned out what it was exactly that you wanted to say. “I… I miss you. I feel like you’ve been avoiding me lately.”

A pregnant pause on the other end. “I, yeah, I have.”

Your heart drops. You have to focus all your energy into keeping your voice steady. “I hope I haven’t done anything to upset you. Jimin told me about some of the workplace banter that’s been going around about me. I wanted you to know it’s not true.”

Again, he takes a while to reply. You can’t work out if his sleep-addled brain is just taking longer to process, or if he’s really thinking about what he’s saying. “Well. I’m glad it’s not true. You shouldn’t be sleeping with guests, especially not ones that are directly related to the boss, and especially not on company time.”

“That’s the thing! I didn’t! I had to go into his room to talk to him about something, but nothing of that nature happened. I promise you.” It takes you a while to realize that the extended silence that follows isn’t him preparing a response, but that he really isn’t going to reply at all. You clear your throat. “I really like you, Jin. I know workplace romance isn’t really the best thing to get into, but… I don’t know, that kiss changed a lot of things for me. I can’t stop thinking about it. And I feel like such an idiot that I’ve gone and wasted my chance because of a rumor going around. I’m sorry.”

He breathes your name the moment you apologize, and the weight of the emotion it holds leaves you speechless. You lean back against the arm of your couch, both hands holding your phone snugly to your ear like it could get you any closer to the man on the other end.

“It’s not about the rumors,” he confesses quietly. “Look, I think the world of you, and I hope you know that. But you said that the kiss changed everything for you,” he breaks off to sigh heavily and you have to chew on the inside of your cheek to stop from taking back the words that upset him, “I’m sorry, but that’s just not me. Fuck, if my ex saw me like that she’d probably change her mind and take me back, but the reality is, that’s not what I’m like most of the time. Would you ever feel this hung up over the chef you met on your first day that was carting around lobsters in an ice bucket? Because that’s me. That’s me when I’m not miserable after a break-up, and that’s why my girlfriend couldn’t stay with me. I can’t… I can’t be with you if you see me as that heartbroken pile of mush on the kitchen floor. I’d just be setting you up for disappointment like I did with the last girl. You don’t deserve that.”

It’s not until you go to reply that you notice how much your eyes sting and how your throat is beginning to choke up with emotion. You take a breath before you speak but it’s too shaky to reassure you. “What can I do to prove to you I like the real you? How can I show you I’m serious when you never let me see you?”

“I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t. I’ve gotten over my ex, and when I’m in the kitchen I’m back to my normal self, I’m sure to Namjoon’s despair, but whenever I see you all that disappears, and I feel like a smitten teenager again. All I want is to hold your hand and take you somewhere nice and-” he breaks off to groan in annoyance. “Fuck, even now you have me confessing my deepest darkest thoughts like a lovesick fool. If I was on the phone to anyone else, I’d be joking around and teasing them, and they’d have hung up already. I just…” he sighs again, but softer than before. “Give me some time to sort myself out. You can…you can do whatever you want with your time, I won’t be mad. But it wouldn’t be fair of me to pursue you when you don’t know what you’re really in for. I’m sorry.” The line clicks dead, and the silence that fills up the apartment is deafening.

You let a few tears fall that had been building up, letting out a wobbly laugh. That was the most heartfelt and emotional rejection you’d ever had. You didn’t know how you were supposed to fall asleep after that, but you crawled down the hall to your bed and collapsed onto the duvet anyway, hoping that sheer exhaustion would take you under.

It was pitch black outside when you awoke, and you hummed in content at the full-body stretch that overtook you, relaxing your muscles and making your vision swim for a bit. As the spots in your peripheral cleared, so did the daze of just waking up. You roll over and check your phone only to see a stream of messages and missed calls, all subtitles under a headline of 1:47am.

“Fuck!” You jolt out of bed and run down the hallway, going to the bathroom as quickly as you could before brushing your hair and teeth, tugging your uniform on bit by bit as you go. You get ready in a record time of 8 minutes, arriving at the hotel a little after 2am.

Rather than spending the extra few seconds it took to go around back to the staff entrance, you pull up and dash into the lobby, ignoring the two men that call out your name, asking what happened, and sprinting down the hall to Namjoon’s office.

Rather than waiting to knock, you burst open the door, panting heavily, and a stream of apologies come out in stutters of breath.

It’s not until you’re met with silence that you actually look up and pay attention to what’s in front of you.

Namjoon and Taehyung are in the office; the elder sitting at his desk like usual, dangling his glasses frame from a single finger while the other hand is buried deep into his hair, tangling up strands. His younger brother is leaned up against a filing cabinet, arms crossed.

Only Tae looks up at you when you storm in, and you’re shocked to see the look of pleasant surprise that crosses his face when he sees you. “Y/n wouldn’t mind! I won’t be a nuisance, honestly, hyung.”

The manager simply groans. “And how would you know what she would or wouldn’t mind? Were you so struck by her presence when she met you for like two minutes?”

You raise your eyebrows at Taehyung in an expression that hopefully conveys ‘good going, genius’, then turn to Namjoon’s hunched form. “What’s happening?”

Finally, he sighs tiredly and sits up, slipping his black frames back on. “Taehyung here wants to earn some money for a new camera, and he’s proposed he can be your assistant.”

You blink, mouth dangling open a little too long. “I thought I was the assistant.”

Namjoon waves one hand in the air and nods. “I told you, Taehyung, you can’t just expect she needs the help. She’s a wonderful employee as is, without you tugging on her skirt for some pocket money. It’d be good for you to spend some time outside of this hotel.”

Even though Tae’s proposal involved you, you still felt like you were intruding on a private conversation. Neither man had even thought to ask you why you were almost two hours late to work. You come in to the office just enough to shut the door quietly behind you, and awkwardly stand in silence, fiddling with your fingers.

“I don’t need to spend time outside of this hotel! Just last Tuesday I went in to uni to hand in my rough draft for the portfolio, which, by the way, you haven’t once asked me about.”

“Oh, you took a trip in to school one time and now you think you deserve a job?”

Taehyung rolls his eyes and looks moments away from stamping his foot in frustration. “Fuck, seriously? I said you could just buy it for me as a birthday gift but no, that would be too much trouble for you, Mr. Small-business Owner,” he drawls sarcastically. “Isn’t it such a shame that mom and dad wasted all the perfect genes on you and used all the sloppy seconds for me? I bet they’re real disappointed that you’re a successful entrepreneur and I’m just some sad, starving artist, huh? I bet you’re real disappointed in me, too,” he mutters the last part, kicking his feet on the carpet, not looking his older brother in the eye.

You try desperately to avoid eye contact with either of them, certain you shouldn’t be here, hearing this, but it doesn’t matter anyway. Namjoon hasn’t given you a second glance this whole time. He’s staring straight at Tae, struck silent, with tears slowly gathering in his eyes.

There are a few moments of uncomfortable silence, broken only by Tae’s sniffing, and when he does finally speak, it’s so soft that you strain to hear it only a few feet away. “I didn’t know you felt that way.”

“Well,” Taehyung scoffs, but there’s no bite to it, “now you do. If my own brother won’t hire me, I guess I better go find a job somewhere else in town. Excuse me.”

He bustles past you and you wince when the door slams, Namjoon looking up at the noise with red eyes. He seems to at last take note of your presence, and his gaze flickers once to the clock on his desk, then back to you. He doesn’t say anything, but simply tilts his head slightly as a gesture for you to explain yourself.

A little put off by the events you probably shouldn’t have witnessed, you have to clear your throat before getting any words out. “I had a rough day and forgot to set my alarm when I went to sleep. I’m so sorry. It won’t be happening again.”

Too drained to really put up a fight, he just nods. “I think we’ve all had a rough day. It’s fine.” He takes a stabilizing breath and sits up straight in his chair. “Hoseok’s run out of printer paper again, can you please drop some off to him asap?”

It’s clear that the conversation has ended, and he just wants you to leave so he can compose himself, but after grabbing a couple reams of paper from the stationery drawer in the office, you pause by Namjoon’s desk, bend down, and pull him into a quick hug.

He still doesn’t say anything, but his arm comes up to wrap tightly around your back, and you can feel the way his hands are shaking slightly. You give him one last squeeze and let go, sending him a soft smile before you leave.

Once you leave the tension of the office behind, you blow out your cheeks and sigh. Even though your shift was technically going to be a couple hours less than normal due to your tardiness, you had a feeling it was going to be the longest one yet.

Supernatural-where do I stand?

OK, so this will probably not be seen by anybody because I don’t really understand the functioning of SM in general, and least of all, tumblr. I am a french canadian, so english is not my maternal language, which means, there will be some vocabulary and grammar errors.

So, I started watching supernatural around 2 and a half years ago in a binge tv shows period of several months where I had personal struggles, and this show somehow connected to me and stayed stocked in my mind. For probably 6 months, I sticked with the show only, which means no following actors on tweeter or IG or FB, nor seaching them or the show on google. I saw 2 brothers sacrificing everything for each other well being over and over again, even if sometimes, they fell out of line (figths between them over the view of the goodness of some monsters, them not having the same POV of how to avoid the apocalypse, trust or not the British men of letters, ect.) (14 seasons of fights, which is normal between 2 individuals, brothers or not, is so hard to summerize! I won’t even try!), the fact is that they always choose each other. Along the line, I saw a lot of side caracters who helped developing the subtlities of the personnality of those 2 main caracters: john, bobby, ellen and jo, gordon, ruby, bela, lisa and ben, castiel, adam, garth, lucifer, meg, crowley, kevin, Ezekiel/Gadreel, amelia, gabriel/trickster, benny, mary (This is not a exhautive list, I must have missed important caracters). The point is, all those secondary caracters for me have always served the goal to further the plot of sam and dean winchester, deepening their persona and explaining their bond through adversity. Then, I went to the rabbit whole of internet!!!

For the first few months, I followed the actors on their social media, and by that I mean I followed like 15 actors who had the most recurring presence on the show. Nothing shocking appeared to me from them, but I started to see in comments that there were factions in the fandom. I am a curious person, so for about a year, I explored all the theories, keeping in mind that all of it is fiction. At 36, I had never been aware of fanfiction, ships (Which I was like “ why are they talking about going at the sea or fishing!!) neither of fictional caracters or actors playing those caracters (I know now it is RPF) in this phenomenom.

One thing for sure that I have identify myself is that I am a bibros, if the meaning of bibros is that the show supernatural is, at it’s core, the relationship of the two brothers, sam and dean, and even if you might identify with one more then the other, you still think of them as equally important to the story. After that, from what I have seen, there seems to be 2 different types of wincest shippers (I totally might be wrong on this part, let me know!). There seems to be a consensus that the brothers are each other first priority and soulmates. But while some ships that it extend to a sexual relationship, others only consider the soulmate part without the sexuality. I am of the former part. I am also very interested in the closeness that the 2 actors, jared and jensen, share. So I am very aware of the J2 tinhat (faction of the fandom who believe that Jensen and Jared are in a romantic relationship) which i still consider as theories, but alternate between believing and not.

After those identifications of myself in this fandom, I must say, at first, I could understand the appeal of castiel, his epic entrance in the series and his importance in dean’s caracter development (can he trust him or not while he knows his brother is lying to him and trusting a demon-season 4). But, here comes the internet rabbit hole! I have to say, it was some extreme and too much present “castiel defenders” that drove me away from this caracter (I would probably have found flaws in his caracter’s development without them, but I surely would like him more). And here, let me put a distinction. I do think that there are peaceful destiel shippers who know that it is only a fandom who like the idea of cas and dean loving each other without having the need of that being explicitly shown in the serie. Like the majority (of what i have seen) of the wincest fandom believe in the love between the brothers but don’t actually need that love (the erotic part of that love) to be explicititly shown in the serie.

So, yeah, I found the existence of what is called the destihellers. For 2 years, I have just went from blog to blog, tweeter scandal to another, and from what I have seen, it is always some “make destiel canon” faction that is the starting of big drama. So that is my only “anti”, because otherwise, i believe in freedom, as long as it stays in the fandom. So after founding my multiple identification in the supernatural fandom, i have only this message to offer: ship what you want, communicate with those you identify to IN THE FANDOM but let it here, ships and theories RPF are’nt welcome when you are meeting the actual actors portraying those caracters. That is your creativity and beliefs, let the actors and writters of the show use their own creativity and knowledge of their show to build what they believe in. It is ok to be critical of their work, but in the end, you won’t win by creating drama and thinking by being annoying.

There are a lot of opinions about the show, which I will not discuss here, but one that stood out to me was this: “I usually don’t like yaoi, but I don’t mind YOI!!” Pause. Ok, I am a fan of smutty anime and manga, so I am very familiar with the concept of yaoi and yuri. They are gay porn for otaku. They specifically focus on erotic material that revolves around a same sex partnership. YOI!! has fan service, but it is hardly erotic.

In reality, why does there need to be a separate category for shows that would otherwise be considered “normal,” except for the fact that is contains a same sex relationship? There isn’t a label for hetero specific romance (we just call it romance), while we specifically need to warn people, “Hey, two girls kiss in this manga, but it’s not in a smutty way, so beware.”

I understand the delineation of porn - not everyone is gonna like certain things. The main goal of porn is to satisfy a very specific goal, but other media can vary greatly. In my view, it’s similar to disliking any other relationship in a story. It’s your prerogative if you dislike it because it’s two guys, but I really don’t like Asuna and Kirito together for my own reasons, so I don’t go out of my way to watch every iteration of Sword Art Online. As a woman who loves a woman, it is frustrating that characters that are like me are placed into a box as to not disturb viewers that are not normalized to the existence of same sex relationships. I don’t see my relationship as being different from my other friends in opposite sex relationships. That isn’t to say that Japan’s normalization of same sex couples is the same as the US, but I definitely think we can make changes in the Western fandom. There have been other series that have had same sex couples as supporting characters, like Cardcaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon and I don't see these shows being labelled as yaoi or yuri, so why should we label other shows that have these couples as leads any differently?

We wouldn’t call any of these yaoi or yuri, nor are these shows aimed specifically at a LGBT+ audience. These are developed for a general audience, and so are a great deal of the shows that I have heard labelled as yuri or yaoi in discussions and reviews. If anything, we need to look at the language we use to describe these shows. At least if you say that YOI!! has elements of shonen-ai, I can get behind that; however, you really look silly if you call a show about boys ice skating a gay porn because of Victor and Yuri’s relationship. I think we need to check on our understanding of how people act and function: remember "ai" means love and there isn't anything inherently erotic in that.

9.23.18 - Rant & Some News

I honestly was going to wait until the same time I made my journal yesterday (around 10) but I’ve been so eager to write since I woke up, that I wanted to type everything out and post it while it was still fresh in my mind.

First, I want to thank everyone who noticed my journal yesterday, and especially the person who left the kind comment! Unfortunately, whenever I try to reply, or message someone, it comes off as my main blog, not this blog >:( and I’d like to keep my primary blog a secret, to keep it separate from this one. But if anyone knows how to talk to people as this blog, my “secondary” one, that would be a huge help for me.

Secondly, I was looking through the tulpa tag and saw a lot of really shitty posts against tulapmancers. People saying we should literally go die, and that the terms “system” and “headmate” were only for people with DID. This, I have to disagree with. The term “system” is for anyone who shares a body with multiple people. That’s it. It isn’t inclusive to a certain group of people who use the term. We aren’t insulting people with DID, or those who have involuntary alters. I don’t see how creating a sentient person in my head at will to communicate, talk to, and be friends with is an insult. This isn’t to demean anyone with a disorder, or to insult them in any way, but saying we are trying to have a disorder is ridiculous. We’re not giving ourselves a disorder. I’m sorry that you’re having a difficult time, and that your disorder can sometimes prevent you from functioning or living a happy life, but we’re not attacking you or trying to impersonate you. Let us live and cope in peace. There’s nothing wrong with creating a tulpa, change my mind.

Okay, on to a better note! I experienced head pressure last night for the first time and I got so excited I sat up and broke my meditation. I probably should have kept it going, to see if I could get any farther, but it was so exhilarating! I don’t know what his face looks like yet, I haven’t given it much thought (I know that would normally be the first thing I would think of, but I just haven’t gotten to it yet) His skin his pale, almost like porcelain. He’s about a foot taller than me (I’m 5′7) and he has long, soft white hair that goes down to the small of his back. Not a single hair out of place. His clothes are white as well, almost like long, flowy robes? The sleeves go over his hands and although I’ve only ever seen him sitting with his back to me, I think the robes go down to his feet. I think. I’ve also seen him with white pants, and a black turtleneck with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows. I’m not sure which outfit he prefers yet.

Thinking of names, I’m not sure how far I should get into developing my tulpa before I name him, but the name Fenrir is really resonating with me. Maybe I’ll make another post tonight, after I’ve been forcing for a bit and trying to see my tulpa’s face, or create one. I don’t think I should control how he looks. Although I will force with him and build his communication skills, teach him, and get to know him, I think he gets to control and show me how he looks. He deserves freedom to express himself!

Personality traits that I’ve picked up from him so far are introverted, and cautious. It’s nice because I’m also an introvert, and a cautious close friend is someone everyone needs, right? Personality traits that I in particular would like him to have are empathetic, inquisitive, kind, and reassuring. I won’t control every aspect of his personality, but I’d at least like him to have those.

Two Years of BBLC!

Wanted to reflect on the blog a bit, and talk about where it’s going from here. Going to be mostly stream-of-consciousness stuff that doesn’t pertain a whole lot to the actual point of the BBLC itself, so I’ll do your dashboards a favour and put it under the cut.

So then! Let’s talk about success.

In terms of its primary function (that being ‘get BB playing through that got-dang steam library’), it has been an undeniable success. I started at 80 games, have played 120, and now have just 30 left. Questionable mathematics aside, I know for sure a good 80% of those games I played would have forever been pushed to the backburner if the dice weren’t in control.

As an aside- I’m a lot more frugal lately, too, and have bought far fewer bundles just because they seem like a good deal. I moved it over to a blog format (this one!) and managed to get a couple of friends to jump in on the fun, but it never really took off in the way I would have liked. I think the audience that would appreciate this blog isn’t really on Tumblr (though I do appreciate the 15 followers I’ve amassed in that time)- not to mention Tumblr’s pretty awful when it comes to interactivity with readers and potential players.

I’ve been thinking over that a lot recently, along with thoughts of how I could potentially monetise the idea. I’ve come up with a few ideas, each with pros and cons...

First, I thought a podcast form of the challenge could be pretty neat. The specifics would need to be worked out before going ahead with it, but releasing an episode every month or every two weeks where we talk about the games that have come up in the meantime, our inpressions of that first hour of play, answer and discuss questions from the other ‘casters, and end each section with a Fin Or Bin as is customary. Alternatively, as Pasq suggested, we roll our libraries together, pick a game most of us haven’t played, and each of us spends that hour playing it and we come back to discuss what we thought, sort of like a book club. Perhaps even a combination of the two ideas.

The major con with this idea is that it would require getting at least one other person to commit to doing a regular spot with me, as well as commit to playing however many games our format required. Arranging a time we can talk, setting up the audio, editing and publishing would be a significant time sink even if I elected to do most of that work myself. If the other person/people flaked, that’d grind my progress to a halt. It would be a lot of fun to talk about the lesser-known games, though, and I think it’d be a mostly casual experience. Podcasts are fun!

Another problem, and one common to most of these ideas, is- I’m running out of games! If I could have started doing it 120 games ago there would be a much stronger hook than “Beebs plays 30 games and talks about them”. If I joined up with a couple of other people who each had libraries numbering three digits, it’d quickly become unbalanced.

Streaming was the other idea I thought of, or a youtube series. Go live for an hour or so to play the game as I would have done so regardless, except chat through a microphone while I do it. Them video games streams are popular, so I hear, and if I played one of the bigger-ticket games on the list, it might draw some audience.

Main problem with that angle is that playing a new game would no longer be a leisure activity, and would require set up and the right moodset to be able to put on a good vocal performance. If I was streaming, too, it’d have to be at a regular time, so I couldn’t just play games for a spare hour in the evenings. If I ditch the stream idea and just make it a youtube series, I’d have to think about whether it would just be an audio form of the blog posts (and then, why keep the blog) or if it should just be edited footage like a Lets Play series, which might boil down to 15 minutes of me floundering about with no idea what I’m doing and providing no entertainment.

I do enjoy the idea of a video series, in some form. When I think about the chaos I caused in Project Cars for instance, or that glitch I encountered in Sniper Elite, I wish I had been recording the whole time. I think Beebs-brand fun would make for some entertaining videos.

The problem then again is that there’s only 30-odd games left to go, and I can’t guarantee any of them are going to be entertaining to watch, whereas I can at least write an entertaining post about a dire game.

Either way, it seems like a Discord server is the way to go. I’ve begun setting one up, ready to launch if I ever go ahead with one of these ideas. And, of course, there would be a patreon behind it all.

I worry about my pastime becoming work.

I worry that, as with so many of my projects, I’ll forever say ‘I’ll get around to doing that video/audio/whatever later’, and then procrastinating it until it’s ancient history.

And I worry that people still just aren’t really going to care, which is tolerable at the moment because I’m getting a lot out of it for myself but may become intolerable when I’m putting more hours into it.

One law professor’s overview of the confusing net neutrality debate

I’ve remained rationally ignorant over the debate on net neutrality, as it’s not in my academic field. But with net neutrality being in the news a lot recently, I took to Twitter to ask if there were any good explainers or debates on the topic that gave both sides of the argument and could help me understand the competing perspectives. Some readers pointed to this debate from 2007 between Tim Wu and Chris Yoo, which seems like a good start.

In addition, professor Gus Hurwitz responded with a long email offering his overview of the debate. I thought his explanation was sufficiently interesting — at least to someone like me who has no background on net neutrality– that I asked him if he would let me publish his explainer here at the blog. He agreed.

What follows below is from Hurwitz, not from me, and it offers his effort to summarize the debates over net neutrality. Of course, it is only one person’s view, and Hurwitz clearly has his own perspective on things — especially near the end. But I thought it was worth offering this perspective, with the understanding that if others think this overview is wrong or misguided, it’s a big Internet and others can respond.

I’ll be happy to update this post with links at the bottom of this post to particularly helpful responses or criticisms of this overview. My goal is just to try to figure out what the debate is, rather than come to a particular view, so I’m particularly interested in perspective that disagree with this take about what the debate is. Just email me with the links to the responses. If there are any particularly good criticisms from people who seem well-informed on the debate, I would also consider posting them in a separate response post (with the authors’ prior permission, of course).

“Net neutrality” refers generally to the idea that ISPs should not treat traffic traversing their networks differently based on its source, content, use, &c. That is, they should be passive conduits that treat all data the same. We’ve been debating whether the FCC should require such neutrality for the past 15 years – and this debate is actually an Internet-era extension of debates that extend back at least to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation of the historic AT&T monopoly.

I generally identify two main policy issues that animate these debates, which I’ll label competition vs. regulation in natural monopoly industries and the role of regulation in promoting investment and innovation. These are unpacked below. The reality today is that the policy discussion has broken down into pure tribalism – I don’t think there is room (or patience) left for serious policy discussion in this area, even among “serious people.” This is largely because “net neutrality” has become a token representing different, broader, social values that are quite separate from the technical, legal, economic, &c, issues implicated by regulation of how ISPs handle data traversing their networks. I discuss this, as well, as the third point below.

1. Competition vs. regulation in natural monopoly industries

The key background issue in net neutrality (as with almost all telecom and infrastructure discussions) is that last mile Internet access, like most communications networks, is often considered a natural monopoly. “Last mile” access refers to connection between consumers’ houses and their ISPs, and is generally the most expensive part of a network to build. “Natural monopolies” are industries where high entry costs make it economically undesirable to have a great deal of competition. For instance, it may cost $2,400 to connect a house to the Internet. Most consumers only need a single home Internet connection. If the capital costs of building the network are recovered over 10 years, adding a second last-mile connection (that is, ISP) doesn’t offer the consumer any greater functionality but on average increases the price of service from whichever ISP they buy service from by $20/mo.

Whether last-mile Internet access actually is a natural monopoly is often debated – most users have access to at least two high-speed wireline ISPs, many have access to more, and the role of high-speed wireless Internet access (both mobile and fixed) as a competitive alternative is likewise hotly debated. Regardless, it is fair to say that the market is not robustly competitive. This gives rise to concerns that ISPs will have more than a modicum of market power and that they may use this power anticompetitively in ways that harm consumers. The question, then, is what to do in order to protect against these potential harms.

The basic concern of net neutrality in particular is that ISPs, possibly having some market power, may be able to discriminate against data traversing their networks. For instance, an ISP may demand payments from a popular service in exchange for not slowing or blocking that service. An ISP may tell a start-up that it needs to pay more in order to be treated comparably to existing market participants (called paid prioritization). Practices such as these could, the concern is, increase costs to consumers or reduce the quality of their Internet experience.

The question of how to address these concerns bifurcates along several dimensions. For instance, whether this is a generalized problem that we should rely on the [Justice Department] or [Federal Trade Commission] to address, or is it a telecom issue that the FCC is better equipped to address (“equipped” in terms of technical expertise or insulation from public choice (FCC being more captured))? Do we want to rely on rules or standards to guide (im)permissible conduct? Should those rules/standards be more antitrust- or consumer-protection like? Do we want to rely on ex ante or ex post enforcement mechanisms for them?

Proponents of net neutrality generally favor strict ex ante rules enforced by the FCC; critics generally favor flexible ex post standards enforced by the FTC, DOJ, and state attorneys general (possibly with an assist by the FCC in investigating problematic conduct).

Informing these worldviews are priors about error costs and, in particular, the costs and benefits of paid prioritization. Proponents generally think that nonneutral conduct by ISPs, and especially paid prioritization, is overwhelmingly likely to be bad for consumers – pure rent extraction by ISPs that will increase consumer prices and harm entry by edge providers. The extent to which some of this conduct may be good for consumers is so diminishingly small that the benefits of reduced enforcement costs, clear rules, and certainty for consumers and application developers outweighs them.

We have the exact opposite view on the other side: the critics think that the likelihood of harmful conduct is small, where it happens existing legal frameworks are likely sufficient to address it, the political economy of consumer concern about and outrage over discriminatory practices will serve as a substantial check on problematic ISP conduct, and where nonneutral practices are implemented it will be because there are significant gains to trade that will ultimately benefit consumers. (In the interest of disclosure, I am in the latter camp, primarily because, as I read it, the economic literature overwhelmingly shows that net neutrality has potentially substantial benefits for consumers and slight risk of harm – and where that harm has occurred in the past we have been able to address it without recourse to strict ex ante rules.)

Related to these issues is the headline question of “classification” – whether Internet access is better classified as an “Information Service” under Title I of the Communications Act or as a “Telecommunications Service” under Title II. In recent years this issue has become synonymous with net neutrality for many, because Title II classification triggers broad regulatory authority under which the FCC can easily implement strict ex ante rules. It is also symbolically important because Title II is a framework for traditional public utilities regulation, which appeals to those who believe that the Internet should be regulated as a public utility.

In terms of policy, however, this question is mostly instrumental, determining what legal authority the FCC uses to implement whatever rules it does – it doesn’t tell us why or what those rules should be. This is a seemingly important question because in 2010 and 2014 the FCC lost cases in which it attempted to enforce net neutrality rules under non-Title II authority. The 2014 case, however, made clear that the FCC could implement net neutrality rules under non-Title II authority, albeit with some limitations.

2. The role of regulation in promoting investment and innovation

The secondary policy argument deals with investment in building out more, faster, networks and, to a lesser extent, encouraging innovation at “the edge” (that is, by application developers/Silicon Valley).

This issue is principally important as a legal hook for FCC regulation. The Communications Act charges the FCC (in hortatory terms) with ensuring that communications services are deployed to all Americans on a timely basis, and Section 706 of the Telecom Act can be read as giving the FCC regulatory authority if it finds that “advanced telecommunications capabilities” are not sufficiently being timely deployed. (Over the years the FCC has read it both as an independent grant of regulatory authority and not, and the courts have deferred to both readings.)

This brings us to the commission’s “virtuous circle,” or “triple bank shot,” theory of investment and innovation. The theory is that net neutrality rules will promote application development; users will want to make use of these applications and will need higher performance networks to do so; and this demand will drive investment by ISPs in better and faster networks. Thus, through a chain of proximate causation insufficient to satisfy Palsgraf, net neutrality rules facilitate the FCC’s mission of encouraging deployment of such networks.

Taking this a step further, net neutrality proponents also believe that investment will be harmed without these rules. ISPs will seek to extract rents from their existing networks rather than upgrading them and, in fact, will view network degradation as a tool to force edge providers to pay for prioritization. And the lack of certainty over how ISPs will discourage application development, reducing innovation (a direct consumer harm), reducing demand for better and faster networks.

The flip-side of this argument is basically that the virtuous circle can go in two directions: net neutrality opponents are concerned that the rules will increase regulatory costs and decrease the profitability of networks, decreasing investment, harming consumers and edge providers alike. And, relating back to the discussion above, the nonneutral practices may, in fact, facilitate certain types of innovation that make otherwise impractical applications possible.

Much of the current debate, and what is in the new order from the FCC, relates to the investment effects of the 2015 order. The data is thin – only two years with a lot of noise – but suggests that network investment is down since the 2015 order was adopted. On the margin, this weighs against the 2015 order, which we would have expected (if the virtuous circle theory was correct) would increase investment. Realistically, this is mostly reading tea leaves. But agencies are supposed to consider relevant facts in policymaking, and this data tends to contradict the 2015 order and support the proposed new order.

A related, though tangential, point is the effects that this has on broadband deployment. One of the FCC’s core goals, both statutorily and as a matter of current policy, is broadband deployment (“closing the digital divide”): getting Internet service built out in un- and underserved communities. If it is true that investment is decreasing, those decreases will most likely come from areas that are higher-cost to build and generate the least revenue – that is, from un- and underserved areas (high cost/low revenue is why they tend to be un- and underserved). This suggests that net neutrality rules could actively frustrate the FCC’s mission.

There is a related argument that I won’t get into here that the rules also have the effect of subsidizing the highest-cost uses of the network, which are primarily luxury uses like watching lots of high-definition video and playing video games, which has the effect of increasing the cost of the highest-value services, such as accessing basic news & information, using government websites, searching for jobs, &c.

3. The social meaning of “net neutrality”

The most confounding aspect of the contemporary net neutrality discussion to me is the social meanings that the concept has taken on. These meanings are entirely detached from the substance of the debate, but have come to define popular conceptions of what net neutrality means. They are, as best I can tell, wholly unassailable, in the sense that one cannot engage with them. This is probably the most important and intellectually interesting aspect of the debate – it raises important questions about the nature of regulation and the administrative state in complex technical settings.

The most notable aspect is that net neutrality has become a social justice cause. Progressive activist groups of all stripes have come to believe that net neutrality is essential to and allied with their causes. I do not know how this happened – but it is frustrating, because net neutrality is likely adverse to many of their interests. One hears lots of stories about how activists are using the Internet, and how small, typically minority-owned, businesses rely on the Internet and therefore on net neutrality. The reality is that there is exceptionally little reason to believe that any ISP would ever do anything to hurt these users. The general animating fear of net neutrality is that ISPs want to move to a “pay-to-play” model, charging those putting content online to deliver that content to users.

But there simply isn’t enough revenue to be generated from charging most of these users to make it worth the ISPs time (not the mention the political costs that ISPs would face if they did). Moreover most of these users do not deliver their own content, but instead rely on third party providers. There are many stories of people producing video content who are worried that net neutrality will make it impossible for them to reach users – despite the fact that most of them use YouTube to deliver the content. And, as I said above, if net neutrality rules decrease investment they hamper efforts to close the digital divide, harming already marginalized and disadvantaged communities.

The most frustrating of these stories, which relates back to the innovation theories above, is that there is a pervasive belief that net neutrality is needed in order for entrepreneurs to enter the market. The concern is that ISPs would charge start-ups a prohibitive amount in order to get access to ISPs’ customers on terms sufficient for start-ups to compete with firms such as Google and Netflix. This is tragic because almost all of today’s big content providers – the Googles and Netflixes – have invested massively in “content delivery networks.” These are networks that allow their content to bypass almost the entire Internet, dramatically improving performance. In other words, they have already paid for prioritization – they just haven’t paid ISPs for that competitive benefit. Start-ups don’t have access to (or need to pay a pretty penny for access to) services such as these. Allowing ISPs to charge for prioritized performance would give start-ups a lower-cost alternative to CDNs that could give them a competitive advantage (or help remedy a competitive disadvantage). The reality is that most start-ups don’t need that sort of performance assistance (so would not be harmed) – but those offering complex-enough services would have access to a valuable new offering.

It also must be noted that for many (most?) people net neutrality is about regulating ISPs. ISPs are reviled. They are known for bad customer service, they always seem to be too slow, they cost too much (especially bad since they’re mere middlemen, not providing anything of value – just access to content providers’ things of value), and when anything on the Internet isn’t working it’s their fault (e.g., if Netflix is down, users blame their ISP, not Netflix). In this context, “net neutrality” is about “having the FCC regulate Comcast so it will have better customer service and I’ll have someone to complain to when Comcast raises its rates.” Never mind that net neutrality has nothing to do with this. This is why many people are in favor of Title II, utility-style, regulation for ISPs. We don’t like ISPs so we should regulate them; end of story.

The last comment that I will make is how I think about this entire issue: it’s just the latest example of a fight between bilateral media oligopolists. “Big content” and “big distribution” have always fought over how to split the rents they extract from consumers, users have always distrusted distributors, and content providers have always used this to their advantage. From this perspective, the net neutrality rules are pure rent seeking by a content/edge industry that had largely captured the previous FCC.

We are on our phones almost constantly. The average person spends over four hours a day on their device and scrolls the height of mount Everest every year. Do it yourself SEO is not for the faint of heart, and if you don’t already have at least some technical foundation, the hill might be a bit too steep.

But let’s look and see what the landscape looks like.

Here are 5 SEO tools you can use to get a handle on the SEO health of your website. You can use these tools, though if you are not into current SEO, you really won’t gain a full understanding of what you are looking at. You can still get a lot done, because you can learn a little bit more about SEO in the process of analyzing your business through these tools.

If you don’t already have a good working SEO knowledge, this is a great time to gain some!

How does an SEO Audit help your SEO?

It tells you at a granular level what you need to improve, and errors that are hindering your SEO. It’s a black and white, easy to access guide for exactly what you need to do to improve.

To be effective, probably a 4. An effective and useful audit is about speed. Get the info fast, understand what’s important in that info, and execute fast. If you don’t have the time or expertise to do this, hire a pro. If you’re ok getting limited benefit as you learn, get after it!

2. Connect all of your Social Profiles to Your Website

One of the most common mistakes I see is social profiles are not connected, which is really silly, because it’s usually just a process of filling out a form on your WordPress website.

This is another reason to use WordPress, because WordPress makes it super super easy. Social profiles pointing the right direction are really important for SEO, but they’re even more important for customer retention, click-through rate, and social proof.

Social proof is the process of letting your prospective customer know that other people just like them have used your service and are happy with you.

It’s difficult to overemphasize how important clear throughput of social interaction on your website can be.

How does connecting your Social Profiles help your SEO?

One of Google’s top ranking factors is social signals, so when your social profiles are connected to your site, and you pass good info between them, it gives you some social signals. It’s not going to skyrocket your rankings, but you’re hurting yourself if you don’t have it in place.

This is probably the most agnst-inducing word to the small business owner, but its a necessary pain!

Most small business owners don’t realize how easy blogging can be. Most of us feel like we need to be writing Shakespeare to blog, and if we can’t come up with the most unique, One of a Kind content there is, we shouldn’t blog.

“Everyone else is doing this already”, we say to ourselves. We don’t realize that we each have a unique take on things.

I offer an easy 5-step Quick Start Method to get yourself moving so you can blog THIS week. I’ve written entire blog post about it, (see what I did there?) that details exactly how to get yourself moving, and provide the unique content that is already in your brain.

So blog. Try to blog once a week.

Bonus points if you have a YouTube video that you can embed somewhere on the blog.

Now just repeat this five times, and you have five blog posts that you can share regularly as Evergreen content.

It’s powerful. Google is constantly looking for good content. The secret sauce is to make sure you’re answering questions that your customers have. You can even search Google to see if your questions are actually getting searched. If you’re a little more on the knowledgeable side, blogging is a great way to silo content. Don’t worry if you don’t know what that means, just start writing!

Knowledge Level Needed: 3

You need to be able to write cohesively, and you need to understand how to properly use keywords. Hint: not too many, but make sure you have a couple of mentions, direct and indirect, per 300 words. WARNING: DO NOT repeat the same keyword over and over unnaturally. That will get you a slap from Google.

5. Optimize Google My Business.

Google My Business is the “Home Base” for your local marketing through Google, and since Google is the heavyweight in local search, you may want to consider it THE center of your local marketing.

Google My Business is a powerful marketing tool, made even more so in the changes Google has made in their system in the last 12-18 months. If you’re blogging, you should be copying and pasting your blog, or a piece of it, over to a Google My Business post.

There are more optimization functions to be done here, but it’s too involved for one post. There are dozens of specific steps to take in your optimization efforts, so I’ll have to leave that for another post.

6. Optimize and “Syndicate” Your Reviews

Make the most of your reviews!

Don’t let those wonderful reviews just sit out there on those various review sites and social sites! Make sure you’re getting the most out of them. You already did the hard work to get the review, y providing great service; now get the most out of the payoff.

Here are a few ideas.

I go much deeper into about how to make the most of your reviews in another blog post, but for now let’s just quickly talk about how to use them.

First, have a central reviews or testimonials page. It’s a single page on your main website where your prospective clients can go and hear how great you are.

Then, sprinkle the reviews throughout your website.

Every page should have a review, even the about page.

Reviews are the most common way that a prospect interacts with you before the sale, previews your product or service, and samples your brand, long before they ever make a purchase.

Know, Like & Trust has never been bigger than it is now, even though it happens most often now in a virtual way.

How Does Optimizing and Syndicating Your Reviews Help Your SEO?

When it’s done right, your reviews tell future prospects exactly how it will be to buy from you. Syndicating your reviews means that the buyer journey, told by your current customers, is experienced first-hand. Since reviews are about your products and services, they are directly tied to your optimum keywords (or they should be).

You need to understand copywriting just enough to insert keywords in the proper places.

You can also write blog posts ABOUT your reviews. This is a longer process, and again, I go into this fully in a separate blog post, but suffice it to say here that you can create complete blog post out of single reviews. They’re very powerful.

7. Develop your brand story.

Why did you start your business? What’s your passion about what you do? What’s your favorite part of what you do? Wine? Who have you helped? What stories are there around that? How does tie into your core value proposition, and your brand byline? For me, Define the elements of a brand. Logo, colors, feel, byline Etc

Try this: think through your Brand Values, and then associate an image with each value. After that, associate a Value Proposition to those same values. Make a video on each Value Proposition.

Now, you have content associated directly with your Brand. The more iterations you run through with this process, the more honed your Brand Values will be.

How Does Developing Your Brand Story Help Your SEO?

Now more than ever, branding is inseparable from SEO. In the past, you could operate your SEO campaign as some small part of your overall marketing campaign, or as some isolated effort that is short term, but not anymore.

The age of the semantic web and the BERT update in the Fall of 2019 means that Google is constantly in the business of tying brand facts to your brand as an entity, not just ranking a page.

And remember; your Brand Story is the aggregation of your Value Propositions plus your personal story.

I said 1 with a question mark, because you should be able to tell the story of your brand. It’s ok if you don’t know where to start, but it really is the most important job you have in your small business. I think the argument could easily be made that it’s the most important place to invest.

8. Define your value proposition(s).

If you don’t understand what your value propositions are, this is a great time to really nail that down. We’ve already discussed Value Propositions in the previous section on branding, but it’s still valid to

In short, a value proposition is that phrase by which you propose value to your prospective clients.

What value are you proposing to me that your Product or Service has? That is your value proposition. How are you solving my problem? How are you making my life easier?

The more time you spend developing your Value Propositions, the more they will pay off.

Easy. Value Propositions = Keywords. Value Propositions also produce solutions to problems, which yield more keywords.

Working in the land between keywords and copy can be murky. The more work you do in this area, the better.

9. Deploy Your Value Proposition(s)

I know, I know, that sounds like what you’d hear on a military show on Netflix, but I promise, it’s relevant!

Once you have your Value Proposition defined, you have to deploy it. If you’ve been blogging and building pages o your website, then you have at least a dozen pages out there that need to be corrected to reflect your new VPs.

Don’t stop with just one, though; it’s almost impossible that you don’t have more than one Value Proposition, because if you’re like most small business owners, you have more than one product or service, and more than one product or service means more than one Value Proposition.

Every bit of effort you put into Value Propositions pays huge dividends, because they are the direct conduit in talking to your ideal clients….in their exact language!

Every ounce of energy you put into your Value Propositions, and then your Brand Story, is like super power juice for your SEO. Whether you realize it or not, Value Propositions and SEO are inextricably linked, and one powers the other.

How Does Deploying Your Value Propositions Help Your SEO?

When you put your Value Propositions out into the Googleverse, you’re putting little spotlights and highway signs back to your website. By spaeaking in terms of value to your prospective customers, you preach the value of your service to them long before they ever come to your site.

A good mix of SEO for keywords and a little higher knowledge of copywriting, again, and you’re off to the races.

10. Raise your SEO Tool game.

Quarantine is a great time to go through different tool lists, try some, discard what you don’t like and keep the rest.

There are so many free tools out there, pick up some and start using them on your side. I’m including a video on how to use some of the tools that I really like out there, most of these are free.

Warming up your network is a great opportunity to learn what’s going on in the lives of your close business alliances, and you might even come across some business opportunities.

Of course, you don’t want to do this if all you’re looking for is a sale. This isn’t the time.

If you’re unused to networking, here are a few pointers.

First, bring value.

Just like a garden, you can’t expect consistent output without constant feeding, watering, weeding, and most importantly, FEEDING.

How do you feed your network?

In short, help your people. There are many ways to do it, but here’s a HUGE help: reviews.

Most likely, you’ve done some business with different people in your network. If not, you probably still know them or a service they’ve done for someone else well enough to give them a review. You may have even given them a review already. Here’s where you can really help:

Don’t stop with one review!

There are about a dozen major review sites, including Google, Yelp, LinkedIn, Manta, YellowPages and Better Business Bureau.

Go to each of these sites, look for your friend’s business, go to their profile, and tell their story. In less than an hour, you can make a massive difference for anyone in your network that has public profiles.

Google finds every one of these reviews that exists, and values them very highly.

How Does Reaching Out To Your Network Help Your SEO?

It seems counter-intuitive, but real world activity has never had more effect on your SEO than now. Here are just a few ways you can do this:

First, bounce your Value Propositions off your close network. They will tell you what resonates and what doesn’t.

Next, offer reviews and ask for reviews. Make sure you get keywords in your reviews, VERY important and very effective.

If you just do these two things, your SEO will get better, along with your Brand Messaging, your sales and your own presentation of your Brand Message.

12. Develop Video in Your Brand Story

Video is important…when used right.

Before going any further, let me tell you what is probably the biggest waste of budget I see by small business owners: video.

Hold on, I’m talking about poorly conceived and executed video.

Now, here’s the good news: where it’s poorly executed is exactly what will benefit you the most: the money!

The mistake I see most often is small business owners paying thousands of dollars for video that looks great, but has no message. All the budget goes into the visual of the video, and while money might have been invested i copywriting, that copy is not wrapped around value propositions, but rather around some pet idea of the owner of the business.

You can make a video with your phone and a tripod that’s ten times as effective than a $5,000 video, and it won’t cost you any more than some of your time!

The next few items I list will revolve around video, and some high level thoughts about how to use it.

How Does Video in Your Brand Story Help Your SEO?

As you develop your Value Propositions, talk through solutions, answer common questions, then put all of this content in video, you are building a content empire. Take the next step and put relevant images throughout this content, and your SEO empire just keeps growing.

Try to use a keyword in the title of your username. There are tens of millions of YouTube accounts, so the likelihood of you getting exactly the name you want is low. Get as close as you can.

14. Shoot Selfie Videos that Tell Your Story

Talk about your service offerings, products, your back story (customers love to hear about how you started your business and what you’re passionate about), anything you can think of that would help your prospects make a better decision.

You may find this hard to believe, but in most cases, off-hand, self-shot, amateur video converts far better than well-produced video.

There are exceptions, of course, but not enough to stop you from shooting video today!

Few people are comfortable seeing themselves on camera, so just start. You’ll get more comfortable as you go.

How Does Shooting Selfie Videos Help Your SEO?

One word: Conversion.

Selfie videos just convert better than most other video types. If you can get an interview video to work like a selfie video, those will convert well, too.

In this case, it’s less about actual knowledge, and more about tools and tactics. Get a good selfie stick. Get a tripod. You can actually use a tripod as a selfie stick while it’s folded up if you want. Get a phone clip. Then, it’s all about trial and error. Get started!

15. Shoot Videos that Answer Common Product or Service Questions

Explanatory videos that help your customer make a better decision, navigate tough parts of using your product or service, or otherwise make it easier for your ideal prospect to do business with you.

The best way to target video like this is to walk back through your last 15-20 customer interactions. Interview these folks ad ask questions about how things went. If you have a customer service department, poll your team and dig into your most common questions or problems.

Then shoot video for that.

Again, Conversion. If you have any doubts remaining about how much answering relevant questions matters, note this: Google has recently added a “People Also Ask” section in organic search.

Seriously.

You can even get a leg up by polling this section regularly within the framework of your core keywords. Google thinks those questions are relevant, shouldn’t you? Check out the image below for further proof:

16. Seek Out Opportunities for Free Tutorial Videos

Tutorials are’t a good fit for every small business (for instance, you could not very well shoot a tutorial on how to remodel your house after a tornado if you are a disaster recovery company). Determine if they are, and if so, do it!

Free tutorials are great for establishing trust, because as a prospect, you’re helping me for free. If you can create one with enough value, you can offer it as a lead magnet to use on your website to collect emails.

Now that you’ve shot tutorials and product and service videos, let’s talk about the 3rd type of video before we move on to some technically helpful tips.

How Do Free Tutorial Videos Help Your SEO? Isn’t That Giving Too Much Away?

This might be the most important point in this entire blog post: Branding IS SEO today.

SEO was once about keywords. Now it’s about entities, and your Brand is your Entity.

Tutorial videos help you establish yourself as an authority in your space. When you take the next step and continually attach your tutorials to key questions and problems stated by your audience, that authority branding moves into higher gear.

Again, it’s about the intersection of writing good copy for your video, and the tactical aspect of shooting it.

One of the tools I talk about all the time is Screencastify, because any small business owner can shoot browser based tutorial videos….get ready for it….FOR FREE.

17. Shoot Videos that Tell Review Stories

You can super-power your reviews by telling the story of them through video. You can do this one of a couple of ways (I’m sure there are more, but these are 2 I really like).

First, just a regular off-hand selfie video, walking through the engagement on which the review was based. I’ll leave that, since we’ve already discussed selfie videos.

The next type of review video is a type that you can actually use across any of the types we’ve discussed before. I call it a slide deck video, but I’ve heard it called a Slideshare video, too. Either way, you simply use slides or images to walk through a scenario that reflects the review engagement.

There is a really great extension you can use to make these videos, called “Screencastify”. I talked about it in the Video Marketing section of my post on Digital Marketing Tools (linked above), I’ve talked about it in the section above, I talk about it in my workshops, I literally talk about it all the time. It’s just a stupendous value.

It deepens your authority, your customer solution story, which all gotes to your branding, which again, is about entities and what SEO is all about today.

1. Do a full SEO audit of your main business website.

Do it yourself SEO is not for the faint of heart, and if you don’t already have at least some technical foundation, the hill might be a bit too steep.

But let’s look and see what the landscape looks like.

So blog. Try to blog once a week.

First, have a central reviews or testimonials page. It’s a single page on your main website where your prospective clients can go and hear how great you are.

Every page should have a review, even the about page.

Reviews are the most common way that a prospect interacts with you before the sale, previews your product or service, and samples your brand, long before they ever make a purchase.

11. Reach Out to Your Network

Warming up your network is a great opportunity to learn what’s going on in the lives of your close business alliances, and you might even come across some business opportunities.

Of course, you don’t want to do this if all you’re looking for is a sale. This isn’t the time.

If you’re unused to networking, here are a few pointers.

First, bring value.

Just like a garden, you can’t expect consistent output without constant feeding, watering, weeding, and most importantly, FEEDING.

How do you feed your network?

In short, help your people. There are many ways to do it, but here’s a HUGE help: reviews.

Don’t stop with one review!

There are about a dozen major review sites, including Google, Yelp, LinkedIn, Manta, YellowPages and Better Business Bureau.

Google finds every one of these reviews that exists, and values them very highly.

It seems counter-intuitive, but real world activity has never had more effect on your SEO than now. Here are just a few ways you can do this:

First, bounce your Value Propositions off your close network. They will tell you what resonates and what doesn’t.

Next, offer reviews and ask for reviews. Make sure you get keywords in your reviews, VERY important and very effective.

If you just do these two things, your SEO will get better, along with your Brand Messaging, your sales and your own presentation of your Brand Message.

Before going any further, let me tell you what is probably the biggest waste of budget I see by small business owners: video.

Now, here’s the good news: where it’s poorly executed is exactly what will benefit you the most: the money!

You can make a video with your phone and a tripod that’s ten times as effective than a $5,000 video, and it won’t cost you any more than some of your time!

Best practices: MLAG backup IP

Recently there was a conversation in the Cumulus community (details in the debriefing below) about the best way to build a redundant backup IP link for multi-chassis link aggregation (MLAG). Like all good consulting-led blogs, we have a healthy dose of pragmatism that goes with our recommendations and this technology is no different. But if you’re looking for the short answer, let’s just say: it depends.

The MLAG backup IP feature goes by many names in the industry. In Cisco-land you might call this the “peer keepalive link,” in Arista-ville you might call this the “peer-address heartbeat” and in Dell VLTs it is known as the “backup destination.” No matter what you call it, the functionality offered is nearly the same.

What does it do?

Before we get into the meat of the recommendation, let’s talk about what the backup IP is designed to do. The backup IP link provides an additional value for MLAG to monitor, so a switch knows if its peer is reachable. Most implementations use this backup IP link solely as a heartbeat, meaning that it is not used to synchronize MAC addresses between the two MLAG peers. This is also the case with Cumulus Linux. In the Cumulus Linux MLAG implementation, UDP port 5342 is used by default for the MLAG backup IP configuration, which you can see by running the net show clag params command below.

Note that the backup IP is not a required configuration[a][b][c][d] today (that might change in the future); it is used simply to provide added redundancy for the classic “split-brain” MLAG failure scenario. In this case — the loss of a peerlink — each MLAG peer is unaware that the other is still alive and will continue to forward traffic. However, the forwarding of return traffic is suboptimal as the MAC address tables are no longer being synchronized and the return traffic may need to be flooded to all participants in a destination VLAN.

How can I build it?

With Cumulus Linux, there are four main approaches to deploying an MLAG backup IP.

1. Use the loopback. Another option is to leverage the loopback IP addresses as targets for the backup IP link. Dynamic routing is a must for this option and requires the stable advertisement of loopback IP addresses from one MLAG peer to another. We now document this option as it can be appropriate for many environments.

2. Use a dedicated dataplane link. One of the least common yet still valid methods to configure a backup IP link is to dedicate an interface to it. In this case you could dedicate one or more low speed interfaces, possibly in an LACP bond, which is built in a dedicated VRF to connect directly to the peer switch. This is very similar to adding more links to your peerlink bond; however, these links are not used for synchronizing MAC addresses. We don’t document this method currently, but it is supported.

3. Use the management network. The most common method of implementing the backup IP is through the use of the management plane. The existing isolation of the management VRF provides an ideal shared segment between both MLAG peers. This segment is generally via a totally different path than the loopback option described above and provides redundancy in a way that does not depend on the health of layer 3 protocols and dynamic routing.

4. Use back-to-back management ports. This approach like #3 above is not very common. There are very particular use cases where it makes sense which we will discuss below. The main idea is that you connected the eth0 port from one MLAG peer directly to the eth0 port of another MLAG peer. We don’t document this method currently either as it’s not something we see all that often, although it too is supported.

How SHOULD I build it?

You can leverage multiple options but what is the right choice for your environment? If you can use option #1 or #2 above either of those would be preferred over options #3 or #4 but all of them will serve the intended purpose. Here we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each approach while identifying some of the logical use cases for each.

When to use a loopback interface for the MLAG backup IP This is a great approach to use when deploying MLAG. If you’re deploying MLAG in an all Layer 2 environment it may not be possible to leverage this technique. If you’ve never worked in detail with routing policy this approach has more complexity but on the flipside it is the most robust and does not sacrifice any links to be dedicated to this purpose.

Logical Use Cases

Each of your MLAG devices has routing relationships with a series of common devices (leafs to spines, spines to superspines, and so forth)

L3 uplinks across a routed fabric that connects MLAG peers has rich multipathing

Don’t Use It When

You have back-to-back/layered/nested/2-tier MLAG environments

You’re concerned about the stability of the routing domain between MLAG peers

You don’t want to deal with ASN concerns in BGP and the possibility of using “allowas-in 1” (see the note in our documentation)

When to use a dedicated dataplane link for the MLAG backup IP This approach, although not seen very often also offers a significant amount of robustness, and unlike the option above it can be used in any kind of environment. If you have a network which can use this method, and not all can, you should. This option is another great choice but due to port density concerns is not always considered.

Logical Use Cases

Can be used in ANY network type

There is no management network (like there are with MLAG in OOB environments)

Switches are not fully populated and extra ports remain available for use

Don’t Use It When

Port density is of primary importance or switches are at full port capacity

When to use the management network for the MLAG backup IP This has been our tried and true approach to deploying MLAG for a long time now. It’s still used very often because many environments typically have a management network and this is dead simple to setup with very low configuration complexity and without the need to sacrifice ports specifically for the task. This approach works great for dataplane networks but OOB networks may not have their own OOB network to leverage so it is not as versatile of a solution.

Logical Use Cases

Typically used with switches in the dataplane of the network (not out-of-band switches)

You’re already using management VRF

Layer 2 (L2) uplinks prevent you from using a loopback interface

Don’t Use It When

There are concerns regarding the stability of the management network

When to use back-to-back management ports for the MLAG backup IP This method is used infrequently but it works just fine. It is a great way to setup MLAG for an OOB network that does not have it’s own OOB network and needs every single port for switch-to-switch connectivity, leaving you with unutilized Eth0 ports which could be dedicated to the backup IP link.

Logical Use Cases

There is no management network (like there are with MLAG in OOB environments)

There are no available dataplane (front-panel) ports

There are L2 uplinks or you have a back-to-back/layered/nested/2-tier MLAG environment

Don’t Use It When

The distribution tier of OOB switches is in different racks and cross-rack cabling is not allowed.

Debriefing a recent issue

Some of the recent discussion around the MLAG backup IP arose from an incident where a hardware issue was causing the dataplane of a switch to become stuck. When that happened, the peerlink went down on the secondary MLAG switch but the backup IP was still accessible to the management plane (eth0) of the primary MLAG peer. This peculiar failure caused the secondary to think the primary was still alive and not promote itself, which led to all host-facing links being down.

This particular issue would have been caught if the dataplane was integrated into the forwarding of the backup IP link via the use of the loopback IP as the backup IP. Ironically, the issue would not have manifested itself if NO backup IP was configured!

While using a loopback IP as the backup IP would have prevented this specific issue, this was a pretty anomalous case and not typical of other commonly seen failures.

Which method is the best though?

Option 1 or 2 from the above list are the most robust and are the recommended way to deploy MLAG today. However, nothing is free in life, and you must be willing to accept the added complexity of making the reachability of the backup IP part of the routing domain, or in the case of option 2, you must be willing to sacrifice a dedicated link(s) to the purpose.

If the tradeoffs mentioned above are not desirable or not possible based on the constraints of your environment consider using the management network or a back-to-back connection over the management port. Without a doubt, the most general use case for the backup IP continues to be the use of the management network, as it is the least complex and the most widely applicable method, since you can use it in either all-L2 or mixed L2/L3 environments.
