The screeching of Emma Danver’s alarm makes her hazel green eyes shoot open. Normally on a Saturday she wouldn’t have her alarm set and would laze in bed. Especially when she is home from her latest world tour. However, today was going to be a day filled with the Superfriends, and she can’t wait!
Emma had mentioned at the latest game night that she wanted to check out a beach over an hour away from the city and how they could make a day of it. Kara, her Supergirl sister, instantly accepted the idea while bouncing up and down with excitement. Mostly everyone else agreed, happy to know the summer sun would be in full force that day.
Well they still had to persuade a few people, mainly Lena and Alex. But when Emma and Kara both knelt in front of the women with their identical Danvers pouts they were forcibly won over.
Emma smiles as she stretches and runs her hands through her wavy blonde hair. She quickly gets out of bed and opens her curtains. Sighing happily and just enjoying the sunshine blazing into her penthouse bedroom. Emma can totally see how Kara gets her Supergirl powers from the sun, how it recharges her and makes her the Woman of Steel.
After a few more minutes Emma turns and grabs her phone. While making her way to her ensuite she messages the group chat.
Emma: Gooooooodd Mmmoooorrrrnnnniiiinnnngggg!!! How’s everyone? Seriously can’t wait for today!
After having a quick shower Emma wanders back into her room and decides what to wear. She puts on her turquoise surf bikini with her tight black surfing shorts. She wears her blue jean shorts over the top, and a white tank top. She finishes her outfit off with her many bracelets, her apple watch and a layered necklace that has a star, sun and swan pendant. Symbolising each of the Danvers sisters. Alex is the star, Kara is the sun and Emma is the swan.
Swan became one of Emma’s nicknames in school due to there being a lot of Emma’s in the class. Her friends joked she was a swan princess due to doing ballet when she had asked them to come to a recital. Which they did and were in awe, but you know. Emma happily accepted the nickname, taking it as a compliment. Emma smiles as she looks at her ballet shoes strung over her mirror. ‘Another thing I need to get back into.’ Emma thinks wistfully. She still loves dancing, especially the latin styles like samba and tango. But she doesn’t have the time.
As she draws her attention to her reflection she definitely looks like a surfer chick, lean, toned and sun kissed. Which she was happily going for. She’s been dying to surf for ages but just hasn’t had the time. Her band had recently returned from a sell out world tour. And sadly most of the places they played at didn’t have beaches or the right surf. She felt sorry for her neglected surfboard in the back of the tour bus.
Her phone pings drawing her attention away from her musings. Emma laughs when she sees a few messages have already been sent.
Kara: Good morning sunshine! I’m sssoooooo excited too! Did you need me to bring anything else? I got all the food ready!
Kelly: Of course you’d have the food Kara!
Kelly: And good morning Emma! Shall I bring my swimsuit? Anyone going for a swim?
Kara: Ooo I am! And I think Emma is going to surf?
James: Why are you guys texting this early? I could have had at least another hour or more of sleep.
Alex: I agree with James… Emma, I hate you.
Emma chuckles at Alex’s message while she gets a bag ready with a change of clothes.
Emma: Love you too Alex!
Kara: Ahem… What about me?!
Emma: Love you too Kara!
Alex: You love me more though right?
Emma: No I love you both the same!
Kara: *Wink Wink*
Alex: Hey!
Nia: What am I just decoration?
Emma: No of course not Nia! I love you too!
James: What about me?
Kelly: And me!
Emma: Yes James and Kelly I love you both too.
Lena: Do you love me?
Emma pauses before she responds to Lena’s text. Honestly, she’s had a crush on her since the moment they met. But Lena is way out of Emma’s league. A CEO dating a musician and artist like Emma wouldn’t work. She’s not clever or brave like Kara or Alex.
Once when Lena had met her for lunch, Lena had explained what being a CEO entailed. Emma’s mind melted; it was so complex. Lena just laughed at her exasperated expression trying to figure it all out. “And that, my darling, is why you are an artist and I am a CEO.” Emma practically melted at Lena’s smile from across the table.
But that’s one of the things she loves about Lena, her passion for her work and drive for making the world a better place. And her smile. To Emma, Lena’s smile lights up the whole room.
Sighing Emma looks back down at her phone.
Emma: I love you the most… *Delete*
Emma: Yea I love you too. :)
‘Somewhat truthful…’ Emma thinks as she puts her phone in her pocket, grabbings her backpack, guitar case and placing it by the door. Kneeling on her sofa she pulls her surfboard up from behind, giving it a quick hug. Excitement surges through her veins at the thought of surfing the waves.
‘Rao I hope the waves are good today!’ Emma wishes as she swings the board around and accidentally knocks her recent Grammy on the floor. “Shoot!” Emma yelps and quickly drops her surfboard to pick up the award. Emma sighs in relief when she turns it over in her hands, seeing it wasn’t broken. Out of all her awards, this year's Grammy meant the most to her. The album had been a real breakthrough moment for her and the band, Axis, and they swept away the competition. Emma remembers the feeling of pride and honour when their name was called. How she and the rest of the band rushed to the stage in unison and linked arms as each said a thank you.
Emma carefully places the Grammy down and picks up her surfboard. Grabbing the rest of her stuff she locks the door behind her and takes the elevator down to her beloved yellow VW beetle. Which she affectionately calls the ‘bug’. Emma puts her stuff in the car and carefully straps the board onto the roof rack before getting into the driver's seat.
Taking her phone out she sends Lena and Kara a quick message to say she’s on her way to pick them up. Alex and Kelly are picking up Sam. Who did try and persuade Ruby to come but now as a teenager, Ruby has better things to do then hang out with her Mom and her Mom’s friends. James is giving J'onn, Nia and Brainy a ride.
Emma quickly plugs in her phone and chooses to blare out her playlist of her favourite songs. As she pulls out of the underground parking garage she starts singing and making dramatic hand movements as she dances along. Not caring if people see her.
Soon she’s outside Lena’s apartment building and as she turns the music down Lena Luthor herself was exiting the building. Emma’s mouth drops open with how beautiful Lena looks. And how different she looks too! Gone were the suits and smart wear of a CEO. Instead Lena was wearing a thigh length red patterned skirt that matched her red lips with a black crop top. To finish the look off she wore a black bowler hat.
When Lena opens the passenger door Emma quickly closes her mouth.
“Hi Em!” Lena smiles brightly at the blonde and leans over to place a kiss on Emma’s cheek. Making the blonde blush and causing her brain short circuits.
“Hi Lee!” Emma says more high pitched than normal.
Lena grins at her in amusement. ‘Rao I could get lost in those green eyes.’
“Er, Em… We gonna go?” Lena teases causing Emma to jump and pull away from the pavement. “So, how has your week been?”
“Fine. Got a commission to complete before Thursday but I’m almost done. I actually have to thank you, it's the lovely couple we met at the recent gala we went to.”
Whenever Emma is back in the city Lena always invites her to the gala’s. Surprisingly Emma finds she enjoys them, especially when it's one of Lena’s charity events. Lena and Emma are both thrilled to find Emma has a talent in being able to persuade the rich attendees to donate their money. Even from those who have never donated before. “It’s the Danvers charms!” Emma would laugh and wink at Lena when the raven haired women would be dumbfounded at the cheque in her hand from a rival.
“Mr and Mrs Green?” Lena asks, remembering how the couple were enthralled with Emma’s work as an artist and musician. Their donation had been one of the biggest of that night. ‘No surprise there.’ Lena smirks.
“Yea them.” Emma nods while concentrating on driving. She does love the city life but driving through it can be such a pain.
“What did they ask for?” Lena inquires while picking at a loose thread in her skirt.
“Mainly a seascape of a view they had back in the UK. Thatchers rock… I think.” To be honest Emma had been surprised by the Green’s enthusiasm when she showed them her portfolio. How they were willing to wait for Emma’s tour to finish before getting their commission. It had been made easier that there was a reference to work on. Even though she has never been to that part of the UK. Mainly the cities dotting around the island. And even though Emma doesn’t need the money she enjoys doing something different. Her art gives her another escape.
“What style are you doing it in?” Lena asks as she bobs her head along with Emma to the music. Something she’s never done before until getting rides with Emma. Something about the blonde’s carefree attitude rubbing off on her.
“I’m using oil this time. I think it works better with the layering and it can really make the sea look like it’s moving you know? Well… If I get it right.” Emma realises she started to ramble and quickly cuts herself off. Certain Lena wouldn’t want to hear the techniques Emma has been using. “If all goes to plan the painting should look different with the different lighting of the day.”
“I am sure you will darling.” Lena smiles widely at her.
Emma smiles back. Feeling butterflies zoom round her stomach at the term of endearment.
“Thanks Lee.” Emma taps her thumbs to the beat while they wait for a light to turn green.
“How-”
“How’d-”
They both stop when they realise they both started talking.
“You go.” Emma motions Lena to continue.
“How’s everything going with the band?”
“It’s going really, really well! We are already writing songs for the next album. But we’ve also really benefited having this time off too.” Emma grins thinking of the other band members.
In some ways they’ve become another little family to her. The four other guys were already formed and were looking for a female influence. Emma saw the flyer and thought ‘why not!’ before calling them and doing an audition. The guys were blown away by her voice and talent. Unanimously they agreed she can become a member of the band and ultimately making her the lead singer. That was over eight years ago when Emma was eighteen and Axis were well known in certain areas of America but when Emma joined their popularity skyrocketed.
However fame didn’t matter to Emma, but she loves performing and writing music. Especially when she gets fan messages about how her songs have helped someone get through a difficult time and gave them hope. She always makes sure to save those messages.
“Sounds exciting.” Lena agrees, nodding her head.
“Speaking of deals.” Emma pauses to concentrate on the traffic. “How’d the deal with the Japanese go?”
Even though Emma wasn’t looking at Lena she could feel the big eye roll the raven haired beauty did.
“That good huh?” Emma jokes but feels for the CEO.
“Honestly it was a nightmare. They kept going around in circles and I’m just getting over the migraine!” Lena dramatically rubs her forehead. Which Emma misses from looking at the road.
“Ah no.” Emma frowns as she quickly looks at Lena. “Are you sure you’re okay to come to the beach?”
“Yes I’m fine.” Lena smirks at Emma’s concern.
“Okay, I am glad you’re coming.” Emma smiles brightly back.
Lena raises an eyebrow. “Did I have a choice?” Lena teases.
“Yes! But it would have made me very sad if you hadn’t.” Emma pouts dramatically and pulls off her best puppy dog eyes.
“And that’s why I said yes.” Lena chuckles at how adorable Emma looks.
Soon they pull up to Kara’s building and she’s already waiting outside. Piles of bags by her feet. Both Lena and Emma laugh at the sight. “Joys of being Supergirl I guess!” Emma jokes about Kara’s metabolism.
As she parks Emma can’t help but remember the day Kara became a part of the Danvers family.
Emma had taken to the alien quicker then Alex, especially as there was only a year age difference between the two blondes. She also found she became the bridge between Alex and Kara. Over time the three learned how to live with the new dynamic and would soon enjoy each other's company. Kara and Alex would laugh when little Emma would cheerfully yell that they were the three musketeers as they played with wooden swords or practically any activity that involved the three of them. Even making hot chocolate together.
When Kara became Supergirl Emma almost had a fit. She’d been in New York for a sold out week of gigs when she had seen the news in the early hours of the morning. Frantically she called Kara to see if she was okay and getting even more frantic when she realised Alex had been on the plane too. The two sisters were eventually able to calm her down after a lot of sobbing and panic from her end. When Emma returned to National City she held onto her sisters a lot tighter that day. Eventually the three ended up falling asleep together on the sofa. Emma in the middle of the two as they wrapped their arms around each other.
Emma’s musings were interrupted when Kara slammed the car boot down hard. Causing the car to bounce.
“Careful Kara!” Emma yells, knowing full well her sister would hear her.
“Sorry little one! I’m just so excited!” Kara squeals as she opens the backseat door before leaping in.
“Hey I’m only a year younger than you!” Emma frowns into the rear view mirror to glare at her sister. Who just sticks her tongue back at her while clicking in her seat belt.
They continue the hour long drive to the beach, chatting and singing along to Emma’s playlist. Lena watches on in amazement as Kara sings the melody and Emma does some beautiful harmonies around her. They all laugh and cheer when Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ comes on.
“Come on Lena! Join in!” Emma yells while she puts the volume right up. So Lena does. When the rock part of the song comes on all three of them dance and headbang along. Lena laughs as she feels so carefree. She pauses when Emma starts singing passionately to the next verse.
So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye So you think you can love me and leave me to die Oh, baby, can’t do this to me, baby Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here
Honestly she could listen to Emma’s voice for hours. Which is probably why she secretly went to as many of Emma’s gigs as possible. But every time she would go to reveal herself to Emma she would back peddle and leave. Knowing that someone as talented as Emma was way out of her league. Her pride for her friend as she watched with the Superfriends at Kara’s apartment as Axis won Grammy after Grammy, award after award. How they screamed with joy and hugged each other after each announcement. Plus Lena thought someone as pure and happy as Emma wouldn’t do well with someone broken like Lena. So she keeps her feelings to herself and tries to be content with being Emma’s friend.
Lena’s heart warms as she remembers meeting Emma for the first time over 3 years ago. She had been at one of her first game nights with the Superfriends when a knock sounded on Kara’s door. Everyone had looked at each other in surprise as no one was missing. Lena watched Kara bounce towards the door and as she opened it a continuous scream of surprise and happiness escaped Kara’s mouth. This caused Alex to rush over in response and suddenly scream as well. The two sisters practically tackled the blonde beauty out into the hallway where they fell into a laughing heap. Kara kissed the blonde’s head over and over while Alex held onto her like a koala bear and kissed her cheek over and over.
Finally they untangled and Kara dragged the other blonde into her apartment. Excitedly introducing everyone to her little sister, Emma. The Superfriends each individually greeted the newcomer and when it came to Lena’s turn Emma had stepped forward and gave her an affectionate hug. Laughing that Kara has told Emma so much about her that she feels she already knows Lena well. When Emma stepped away from the hug they both ignored the warm feelings racing around their bodies. Lena had to agree as both the Danvers sister’s spoke of Emma fondly and how proud they were of Emma’s success. Lena hadn’t told anyone this but she bought all of Emma's music to listen to it after Kara gushed about her sister. She instantly fell in love with the voice coming through the speakers.
Kara soon asked why Emma was in National City and Emma excitedly revealed that Axis was moving to National City. Lena again ignored the feeling of excitement that shot through her. And again Emma was tackled to the floor as both Alex and Kara leapt towards her in celebration.
“Lena?” Kara’s voice breaks through her thinking and Lena turns to look back at her best friend. Listening intently as Kara excitedly explains a new prototype Brainy is designing to help Kara not be so affected by Kryptonite.
“Maybe I can help with it?” Lena offers kindly.
Kara’s smile brightens up even more. “That would be swell!”
Lena gives Kara a small smile before turning back to the front. To be honest it still stings that Kara didn’t tell her Supergirl secret to the CEO. It had been two years after Emma had moved back to National City when Lena and Kara were having lunch but Kara was being called away. Again. Lena couldn’t stop herself and blurted out she knew Kara’s secret. She will never forget how Kara’s face fell and the promise of talking about it after she’s finished. Lena’s face grew cold as her walls shot up. She told Kara not to bother and stormed out of the restaurant to her penthouse apartment. She refused to see anyone or answer her phone. Allowing her past hurts and hatred to simmer and boil.
That was until a knock sounded on her door. She chose to ignore it but the knocking persisted.
“Come on Lena, please open the door. Let’s talk about this.” Emma’s muffled voice sounded through the door.
“Why should I?” Lena spits out as she draws closer, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.
“Because you shouldn’t be alone right now.”
Lena scoffs. “And why not?”
“Because you’ll allow your demons to lie to you and it will eat you up.” Emma had experience with this herself.
Tears fill Lena’s eyes and against the screaming in her head she reaches out and opens the door.
“Hey you.” Emma gives Lena a small smile before stepping into the apartment. Placing the takeout bags on the floor and pulling Lena into a tight hug. Allowing Lena to break down as she sobs into Emma’s shoulder. All her past hurts rushing forward and spewing out.
After she was spent Emma gently led her to the sofa and reheated the food. Making sure Lena ate. They talked long into the night and when Lena started rubbing her eyes from exhaustion Emma helped her get ready for bed. As Lena slid between the sheets Emma leaned down to give her a goodnight hug. But stopped when Lena wouldn't let her go. “Stay.” Lena whispered. So Emma grabbed a pair of her spare clothes she left for times like this and got in next to her. Lena shifted over to her and rested her head on Emma’s shoulder. Emma wrapped her arms around Lena and held her close. They don’t say anything more but drift into a peaceful sleep.
“We’re here!” Emma sings out, causing Lena to jump slightly. They pull into a car park right next to the beach.
“Oh wow!! Look at the sea! It’s so beautiful!” Kara gasps as she presses herself against the window and like an excited child she unbuckles and races towards the beach. Having already spotted Alex, Kelly and Sam setting up.
Emma snorts at her sister’s behaviour while she unbuckles her seatbelt.
“Er… She will help us with the food? Right?” Lena looks back at the overflow of food bags in the back of the bug.
“Yea as soon as she realises she will shoot back up here.” Emma chuckles while getting out of the car. And Kara did just that as Emma went to pay for a parking ticket she watched Kara race back up to them, in human speed. “Glad to see you helping.” Emma raises an eyebrow at her sister as Kara reaches the bug.
“Sorry! I just got really excited! It’s so beautiful here!” Kara bounces like a puppy.
“Now you understand why I dragged you here instead of going to the beach at NC?” Emma says while carefully unstrapping her board before lowering it and leaning it up against the bug.
“Yes, yes.” Kara keeps her eyes on the beach.
“Hey.” Emma smirks at her distracted sister.
“Yea?” Kara tears her eyes away to look at Emma. Smiling when Emma opens are arms and they hug. “Haven’t been able to give you one yet.” Emma says in her ear. Kara buries her face into Emma’s neck, enjoying the warmth and feeling of home whenever she hugs her sisters.
The car door closing makes them break apart. “Okay I think that’s everything.” Lena says while looking at the small mountain of bags.
“Thanks Lena!” Kara sings as she grabs half of the bags before Emma can tell her to only take a few. Hopefully no one will question how a slim woman can carry that much weight. Lena catches Emma’s eye and they both roll their eyes at each other.
“Jink!” Emma yells causing Lena to do another eye roll. Before Emma can reach down for her stuff Lena steps forward.
“Can I have a hug too?”
“Sure you can Lee.” Emma opens her arms wide and Lena almost tackles her with her enthusiasm. They both sigh happily as they hold onto each other a bit longer than necessary. Emma breaks the hug and steps back, grabbing her backpack, placing a few food bags on her shoulders picking up her guitar, and securing her surfboard under her arm. “Oh Lee don’t take that many, Kara will come up and get the last few.”
“Okay.” Lena nods while swinging a food bag on each of her shoulders and they start walking towards the beach. “Kara is right though, it’s really beautiful here.”
Emma smiles at her, happy Lena approves. The sand was a beautiful white which made the sea clear and looked like a gorgeous turquoise and teal. The richness of the colours makes Emma want to weep with happiness. They could pretend like they were in the Caribbean or on the Hawaiian islands.
“Hey Peanut!” Alex yells as Emma approaches her.
Peanut has always been Alex’s nickname for Emma since their parents told three year old Alex she was going to be a big sister. Alex had been fascinated about it all and when her Mom had told her the baby was the size of a peanut the name stuck. Even when Emma grew and was the size of tennis ball Alex would still refer to the baby as Peanut.
“Hey sis!” Emma yells back, dumping her stuff on one of the picnic blankets. Alex comes over and pulls Emma into a tight hug, quickly followed by Kelly and Sam. “Been a long time Sam, how are you?”
“I know I’m sorry!” Sam says as she takes a step back. “Life’s been hectic!”
“Oh don’t I know it.” Emma laughs. “Maybe you can ask your boss to allow you to have a life?” Emma teases while giving Lena a pointed look.
“Not my problem she wants to work longer hours then she is contracted!” Lena places her hands on her hips.
“Maybe she’s following her boss's example? And maybe the boss needs to cut down too? Maybe relax a bit?” Emma stalks towards her crush.
“Maybe-” Lena stops what she was going to say and tilts her head as she watches Emma approach. A smirk on her face. “What are you doing?”
Suddenly Emma reaches out and starts tickling Lena who laughs loudly and tries to swat the blonde away.
“Lena! She’s ticklish too!” Alex snickers as she goes through the food bags.
“Traitor!” Emma yells as Lena starts her own assault. The two women fall to the sand in fits of giggles as they wrestle. Before Emma can gain the upper hand Lena straddles her and continues tickling her. “No! Lena!” Emma kicks out trying to shift the woman on top of her. But Lena was not budging. “Argh! I surrender! Please!” Emma wheezes.
“I win?" Lena stops and gazes down at Emma triumphantly.
“You win.” Emma coughs and when Lena moves off her she instantly misses the feeling of Lena’s weight on top of her.
“Are you ladies done or are you going to help?” Alex raises her eyebrow at them as they catch their breath.
“Yes ma'am.” Emma salutes before getting up, rubbing the sand off herself and reaching out to help Lena up. They smirk at each other and set to work getting the rest of the blankets and chairs out for the Superfriends.
Soon the other group arrives and they all sit chatting and relaxing. The men start setting the BBQ up, insisting they can do it, much to the amusement of the women as they try to do it without looking at the instructions.
Alex, Kara and Emma smile at each other as they share a look before giggling. The Danvers sisters have barbecuing in the great outdoors down to an art. But if it keeps the men happy they stay quiet. Sighing Emma turns away from the entertainment and looks out to sea, watching the waves and the surfers riding them.
Alex shuffles up to her, resting her head on Emma’s shoulder. “You can go if you want.”
Emma rests the side of her head on her sister’s. “I know, but the waves aren’t quite right yet.”
“Okay.” Alex wraps her arms around Emma, who returns the gesture and holds onto Alex. Emma moves her head and kisses Alex’s head before resting her own on Alex’s again.
Alex smiles and kisses Emma’s hand that's holding her close. At first Alex wasn’t too keen on the idea of coming to the beach, too much work to do at the DEO and an hour travelling seems like an eternity. But Alex is glad she came. They sit content.
“How can you tell if the waves are not right?” Brainy asks, having left J'onn and James to sort out the BBQ.
Emma looks up at him. “I don’t know, you just can. It’s a feeling.” Emma runs a hand through her hair trying to think of a better way to explain it. “Like when you are out there you know a big wave is coming, the wave. You just got to be patient and take the moment when it comes.”
Brainy tilts his head at her. “I think I understand.”
“Well I’m glad you did.” Alex snorts and yelps when Emma playfully slaps her bare arm.
“Oh come on I didn’t slap you that hard!” Emma laughs but rubs her sister’s arm.
“Anyone wanna play rounders?” Lena asks the group as she picks up one of her bags. She pulls out a rounders bat, which is shorter than a baseball bat, and ball.
“Rounders?” Kara asks, confused. “Don’t you mean baseball?”
“No, I mean rounders, it’s what we played at my boarding school. It’s the game that baseball came from. The first known account of it was in 1744 with the Tudors.” Half of the group look at Lena blankly, while the other half look interested and know who the Tudors are. “Basically you still have four bases, home runs etc. The bowler must do underarm, though we can do overarm…” Lena pauses. “It’s just different okay?”
“Sounds good to me!” Sam leaps to her feet and starts setting the four bases up. Everyone else follows suit and splits into teams, Lena and Sam being the captains of each team. On Lena’s team is Kara, James, Alex and Emma versus Sam’s team which has Kelly, J'onn, Brainy and Nia.
After a coin toss Lena’s team bats first with Sam being the bowler, or pitcher, as Alex yells out.
“And can we make a rule of no powers? We don’t want the ball getting batted into space!” Sam jokes as she jogs to bowler base.
“Sounds fair.” Kara says looking at J'onn who nods in agreement. She gets into position to bat. She hits the ball no problem and starts to run, but she hits the ball too high and Brainy is already waiting to catch it.
“Out!” Sam yells as Brainy holds the ball in his hand, causing Kara to skid to a halt. She turns and walks back to the team, kicking the sand as she goes.
“Hard luck sis.” Alex rubs Kara’s back when she comes back to the line up. Pouting all the way. Emma gives her a hug and kisses her cheek.
“You’ll do it next time.” Emma reassures her.
They watch James get into position and hit quite a good ball. He manages to get to third base before having to stop when Nia catches the ball while on 4th base.
Lena is the next to go and Emma can’t help but watch as she sways her hips getting ready to strike. Her ball goes low and far. She sprints off and her team screams and cheers when she manages to do a home run.
“Nicely done Lee!” Emma holds her hand out to high five the out of breath CEO.
“Thanks.” Lena smiles brightly at the blonde while holding onto her hand longer than necessary.
Alex is up next, feeling the pressure of going after Lena’s home run.
“You got this babe!” Kelly smiles from the 2nd base. Alex smiles back at her before readying herself. She misses the first ball.
“Strike 1!”
Huffing Alex gets back into position again. And misses.
“Strike two!”
“You got this Al!” Emma claps and encourages her sister.
Taking a deep breath Alex readies herself and watches the ball. She manages to hit it and sprints to 2nd base.
“Nice to see you Alex!” Kelly teases the red head causing Alex to gently shove her girlfriend.
“Right you’re up Emma!” Sam calls as she catches the ball.
Emma picks the bat up, wiping the sand off it and stands in position. Noticing the opponents are standing mainly to the left, Emma decides to trick them. When Sam throws the ball she quickly turns her body and whacks the ball to the right side of the field far away from the group. She runs half the way and seeing Brainy is still running to the ball she walks the rest of the way, dancing and blowing kisses. She starts sprinting the last few feet as the ball is being thrown towards Nia. The team celebrates her home run and they play a few more rounds, having a few collisions and lots of laughter. They have two more goes each and swap over. Lena takes over as the bowler. “Pitcher!” Alex yells as she runs to man 2nd base.
The new batting team does just as well and Sam’s team are one point behind. J’onn is up as the last batter, it’s all on him. If he gets a home run Sam’s team has won the game. Emma watches the ball carefully as Lena throws it and in a split second it's coming right at her. She reaches out her hand and catches it. Everyone stares dumbfoundead before yelling in surprise and either excitement from winning or groans for losing.
Emma’s team crowd her and she laughs at the attention.
“Emma?” A voice says behind her.
Emma’s head shoots round and she smiles when she sees her bandmates standing there.
“Guys?” She rushes towards them. Emma had told them of her plans and had invited them to join. They had said they were busy so it's a huge surprise to Emma that they stood in front of her. “What are you doing here?”
“We are… Wanted to talk to you.” Jack, the guitarist and other singer, says before he looks at the Superfriends behind Emma, watching them intently. “Alone.”
“Sure.” Emma shrugs, she turns back to Lena and throws her the ball. Emma walks with her bandmates along the beach until they are far enough away. Though Emma is sure Kara can still hear them. “So, whats up? Everything okay?”
“Er… So about that-” Danny, the drummer, starts but rubs his neck. Feeling very awkward. Frankie, the keyboardist, doesn’t make eye contact with Emma and shuffles his feet in the sand.
Mick interrupts. “We want to leave the band.”
Emma’s mind screeches to a halt. “Leave? All of you?”
“Yea Em. Just with Jack getting engaged, Frankie’s Dad being ill and Danny’s baby is due. We just don’t have the same drive like you do.” Mick looks sadly at her. “We are a great team, but it’s just not the same. After moving to National City we realised we want to settle, have families, the whole white picket fence thing.”
Emma places her hands on her hips, biting her lips to stop the tears threatening to fall. “What about the new album? We’ve already written most of the songs.”
“You don’t need us Em. You are the front runner and can do this with anyone.” Jack tries to reassure her.
“But they won’t be you.” Emma’s heart starts to break when she looks at the finality in each of their eyes. “And… And nothing I can say will change your minds?”
Her four bandmates shake their heads.
“Okay.” Emma looks up at the sky, taking a deep breath before looking back at the men in front of her. “Well, can we do a farewell tour?”
“Sounds like a good plan.” Danny smiles sadly at her and the other three nod.
“Can we give you a hug?” Jack asks quietly, hating seeing Emma so defeated.
Emma nods and they go in for a long group hug. But as the tears start to spill Emma breaks the hug and rushes back to the Superfriends. Ignoring any questions, she throws off her clothes and jewellery and grabs her board. Sprinting to the surf and diving into the sea.
She paddles quickly, still hearing voices, most likely Kara and Alex, calling after her. But she drowns it out by duck diving under a wave as it rolls over her and she resurfaces. Emma continues further out past the swell where she can stop and just lie there. Letting the board bob as she gazes at the horizon. Emma allows her tears to fall. Her face distorts with her disappointment and hurt.
‘What am I going to do?’ Emma thinks. She gets why the guys want to leave. Knowing this would happen one day. Or at least a break, but it still hurts. ‘Since when did it change for them?’ Emma stays like this for a while, lost in her own thoughts.
Some time later splashing behind her makes her turn her head and she sits up. A wet laugh breaks through her lips when she sees Kara and Alex balancing on a paddle board trying to reach her. Alex particularly looks like how a cat would look in this situation. On her knees and very tense having come to a very deep part of the beach. Alex doesn’t like not being able to touch the bottom, or see it. Kara is using the paddle, obviously using a bit of her super strength with how quickly they are going.
“What you laughing at?” Alex snaps.
“Nothing.” Emma smiles sadly at her while wiping the tears from her face. She swings her legs around and places them either side of the board. When the paddle board comes alongside Emma’s, Kara moves to sit down. Causing Alex to shriek as the board rocks dangerously. Emma reaches out and steadies it while trying not to laugh.
“Sorry Alex!” Kara apologises before turning her attention to Emma. “You okay?”
Immediately Emma’s smile drops and her eyes fill with tears again. She furiously rubs her eyes to stop them. “Yea fine.”
“No you’re not.” Alex sighs, hating seeing her sister look so unhappy.
“Guessing you heard?” Emma looks at Kara who nods sadly. Crinkle on her forehead evident of her concern. Emma looks down at her hands, not able to look at her sisters anymore. “I just… I get why…” Emma exhales deeply. “It just hurts you know. We are so in sync with each other and I honestly can’t imagine having to restart all that again.”
“But you will.” Alex reaches out and touches Emma’s linked hands. “Because your voice, your music needs to be heard Em.”
“Yea it's one of my favourite sounds, like ever.” Kara agrees. “But you know you will always have us, right?”
Emma nods, allowing a few more tears to fall.
Alex reaches out and wipes the tears from Emma’s cheeks. “And yes it sucks right in this moment but you will get through this. We will both help you through this.”
“Totally.” Kara agrees.
“Thanks.” Somehow Alex manages to hug Emma without falling in and Kara joins them.
Right on queue Kara’s stomach rumbles. “Oh and lunch is ready.”
“Uh oh the monsters coming.” Emma smirks as she looks at her alien sister.
“Race ya?!” Kara jumps to her feet making the board rock dangerously and had Emma not been holding Alex the red head would have fallen in. After making sure her sisters were okay Emma waves them off.
“Nah, you go on ahead, I’ll be right behind you.”
Emma watches her sisters go, hoping Kara has enough control not to cause Alex to fall in too far from the beach. She keeps her eyes fixed on them, slowly following in case Alex needed her. But when they reach the shore Emma lets out the breath she didn’t realise she was holding. Emma chuckles when Kara returns the paddle board they borrowed to get to her.
Shaking her head Emma starts slowly paddling into the swell and waits, her board moving with the ocean. Suddenly she feels a shift. Emma lies on her stomach and starts paddling hard. She smiles as her board gets picked up by the huge wave. Whooping as her board flies through the tube, she reaches out and skims her hand along the break. She comes out the other end and using the momentum turns her board, shooting her closer to the beach. Until finally her board slows down and she jumps off, wading the short distance to the shore.
“Hey!” A surfer approaches her, smiling flirtatiously. His brunette hair slicked back from the sea.
“Hi.” Emma responds while picking up her board.
“That was a sweet wave you just did!” His enthusiasm makes Emma smile.
“Thanks, kind of wish it went on forever.” She admits, cause really there was nothing like going through the tube of a wave. The colours and sounds were breathtaking.
“Ah man I know right?!” He laughs. “So, I was wondering if I could have your number?”
“EMMA!” She turns to look at Kara who is waving her arms about wildly. Most likely due to Alex saying she can’t eat until Emma joins them.
“Thank you but I’m kind of not available. Sorry.”
“No worries at all.” He looks slightly disappointed but still smiles.
“EMMAAAAAA!!!”
Emma laughs at how Kara’s yells got even louder. “Well I better go, don’t want my sister getting any more hangry.” Emma starts to walk back to the group.
“It was a pleasure meeting you, Emma.” He calls after her.
Emma swings round but continues walking backwards. “You too.” She turns back around, smiling and shaking her head.
As soon as Emma gets near, Kara is loading her plate up at top, human, speed. Emma chuckles at the sight and digs the end of her board into the sand before taking the leash off and flopping onto the picnic blanket.
“Who was that?” Kelly asked across from her. Lena pretends she isn’t listening in as she gets some food.
“Oh just some guy congratulating me on my sweet wave.” Emma imitates the guy's accent which makes them laugh.
“And he wanted her number!” Kara teases while she sits next to Emma.
Whistles and ooo’s sound around the group. Alex watches bemused as Lena purses her lips before going back to a neutral expression.
“So where’s the number?” Sam asks excitedly, not missing Lena’s rigid posture.
“Meh, not my type.” Emma tries to play it off cooly while she grabs her top and shorts to change into again. Not minding that they will get a bit damp as the sun is out in full blaze. She also applies her suncream handing it around and reminding everyone to keep it topped up.
“Since when has hunky surfer boy not been your type?” Kara asks confused as she focuses on the surfer. “Honestly I could grate cheese on his abs!”
“Kara!” Emma laughs loudly while she dishes up a plate of food.
“You also said you weren’t available,” Kara presses on, missing the looks Alex was giving her. “Who's the lucky guy or gal?” Emma had come out as bisexual when she was a young teenager. Her Mom and sister’s supported her and Emma was glad she could do the same for Alex when she came out to her. Alex had even flown out specially to where Emma was gigging to tell her. At first Emma was really worried when Alex avoided eye contact and was nervously fidgeting in her seat. When Alex finally blurted it out Emma held her sister close. Saying how proud she was of her and her love for her sister hadn’t changed.
“No one, I just wanted to get him off my back.” Emma says nonchalantly but inside she was freaking out. She’d said it because yes she wasn’t available because her heart belonged to Lena.
Kelly gives Alex a look and watches as Emma settles in-between Lena and Kara under the umbrella they were sitting under. Alex doesn’t miss how much closer Emma sits to Lena than her sister.
The Superfriends continue talking and when everyone has finished eating they split off to do their own thing. Alex and Kelly go for a walk, mainly to come up with a plan to get Emma and Lena together. While Kara, J'onn, Sam, Nia, Brainy and James play volleyball. Girls and against boys. “Original.” Emma mutters causing Lena to snort.
Lena and Emma opt to stay with everyones stuff. Lena is happy to sit back against the pile and read a book she’s been wanting to read for months but never had the chance.
Emma sighs as she looks at her guitar case. Twiddling her thumbs for a moment she draws her knees to her chest and watches the waves. But not feeling quite ready to get back in.
After half an hour Lena puts her book down and focuses on Emma. “Something on your mind?” Lena asks, nudging her shoulder into Emma, causing the blonde to sway.
“Guessing Kara told you?” Emma keeps her eyes fixed in front of her.
“Yes, she was relaying what was being said.” Lena says apologetically.
“It’s okay. Makes it easier in a way.” Sighing heavily Emma turns to look at Lena. Who is watching her with concern. “I just don’t know what to do. I need to look for new bandmates, but that just seems so daunting. Can I really go through that all again?” Emma runs her hands through her hair. Huffing she looks back into emerald eyes. “Okay if we don’t talk about it? Just enjoy what we have right now?”
“And what do we have?”
“Great company, good food and a wonderful view.” Emma motions to the beach around them.
“Yea, I can do that.” Lena keeps her eyes on Emma.
“Go back to your book Lee. I’ll be fine.” Emma tries to smile reassuringly.
Lena doesn’t buy it but starts reading again. She watches Emma from the corner of her eye as she shuffles over to her guitar case, opening it and pulling the guitar out, making sure it is in tune.
Emma gets her songbook out of her case, opening the page to a song she had started writing. Making sure she doesn’t hit Lena with her guitar Emma settles back down. Grabbing her phone she hits record and starts plucking. Softly singing to herself.
Tell me somethin', girl Are you happy in this modern world? Or do you need more? Is there somethin' else you're searchin' for?
Emma pauses as she remembers a chorus of a song she’s been working on. She quickly flips to that page and moves her fingers to find the chords. She continues to play. Not realising her soft singing has steadily got louder.
I'm falling
Emma sees Lena in her mind as she sings. Her pain at falling for her friend and not having the courage to take it deeper.
In all the good times I find myself Longin' for change And in the bad times I fear myself
Sighing Emma looks at the sea before turning her head slightly to look at the raven haired beauty. Whose focus is on the book in front of her. Returning her attention to her notebook Emma keeps playing and singing.
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in I'll never meet the ground Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us We're far from the shallow now
Lifting her head she focuses on the sea again.
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow In the shallow, shallow We're far from the shallow now.
Emma pauses and stops the recording. Running a hand through her hair which starts getting more wavy from getting wet.
“Wow Em.” Lena breathes out.
Emma turns to Lena who put the book next to her. “You like that?”
“Yes, seriously… I don’t have the words.”
“Thanks, it’s not really finished. It needs another verse…” Emma goes through her notebook but comes up empty. Replaying the first verse Emma closes her eyes to figure out the words for the second verse.
Tell me something, boy
“What rhymes with boy?” Emma mutters to herself. “Toy? No… Void?”
Aren't you tired tryin' to fill that void?
Emma sighs as she remembers friends she has lost due to depression and addiction. Knowing how hard it is to feel whole and get out of the pit.
Or do you need more? Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore?
She sings through the bridge and the chorus again, making sure it all fits. But to her horror she realises she stopped the recording.
“Crap!” Looking down her phone wasn’t where she left it. Instead it's in Lena’s hand.
“I could see you didn’t press record so I did it for you.” Lena answers Emma’s questioning gaze as she presses the button to stop the recording.
“Thanks Lee.” Emma takes her phone and grabs her pen, listening to the recording and writing the song out in full with the chords.
Lena watches Emma. “Do you usually write songs that quickly?” Lena asks, fascinated.
Emma laughs in response. “No, not usually. I guess I was more inspired.” She shrugs, placing her guitar back in the case with her notebook. She shuffles back over to Lena. “Can I?”
Lena looks up and nods, letting Emma lean down, resting her head in Lena’s lap. They do this quite often and it always makes Lena’s heart skip a beat. Slowly she puts her book down beside her and runs a hand through Emma’s hair. Looking at the view and doing what Emma said, enjoying the moment.
Time passes on and Emma watches the group playing volleyball. Kelly and Alex have joined them, Kelly staying with the girls while Alex went over to the boys side. Emma smirks when Kara would not so sneakily use her powers to gain an advantage.
But Emma’s attention diverted back to the sea, the tide was coming in and the swell had gotten bigger. Turning her head to look up at Lena Emma pauses. Her eyes linger on Lena’s chest before taking in her profile. ‘Rao she’s so beautiful.’
“Okay if I catch a few more waves?” Emma asks, finding her voice.
Looking down Lena smiles. “Sure.”
“Thanks Lee.” Emma sits up and presses a kiss to Lena’s cheek. As Emma takes her clothes off she grabs her board and runs to the surf. Lena touches her flushed cheek and smiles softly.
Soon the volleyball group end their game, the boys team winning by a few points. They head back to their set up, laughing at how both J'onn and Kara leapt for the ball, only to miss it completely.
“Hi Lena!” Kara says while sitting next to her best friend. “How's the book?”
“It’s…” Lena looks down at the book and realises she’s only got through part of the first chapter. Her attention had mainly been watching Emma surf. “Slow.”
“Ah I hate it when that happens!” Kara hands Lena a drink while they sit and watch Emma. Who had just gone through another tube, much to the excitement of the surfers watching in the shallows. “I don’t know how she makes it look so easy!”
“It’s one of her many talents.” Lena agrees, though there is always a feeling of anxiety whenever anyone she cares for is in any body of water.
“Totally.” Kara says before sighing sadly.
“Kara?” Lena asks concerned for the Super.
“I just… She’s worked so hard. I know she will come back from this, but when Alex and I got to her she… She just looked so broken.” Kara sighs again. Worry filling her eyes as she watches her sister.
“She didn’t want to talk about it. But said how daunting it is to find new bandmates. Which I can understand.” Lena knows how hard it is to make friends in general.
“Yea it’s not the easiest of processes. She needs to click with them, for them to become in sync with each other and then get on with them. How they managed to drive around in that tour bus all over America and later the world is beyond me!” Kara says with wide eyes, she had joined Emma for a few gigs and thankfully the venues weren’t too far from each other. But Kara found the journey long and boring.
“Kara, anything slower then you flying is beyond you!” Lena's teasing causes Kara to laugh loudly.
“True!”
They continue watching Emma who attempts a few aerial tricks. The spray of the sea flying high above her. “She wrote a really beautiful song just now.”
“Really?” Kara perks up and Lena nods. “Think she’ll play it for us?”
“Maybe.” Lena hopes Emma does. She really wants to hear it again.
While Emma still surfs the Superfriends play UNO. Laughing at how competitive Alex is getting and only getting calmed down when Kelly gives her a gentle kiss.
As the sun starts to slowly descend Emma finally gets out of the sea. Waving goodbye to a group of surfers she had been talking to.
She notices a fire has been built in the centre of the Superfriends circle and a few of them are roasting marshmallows.
Emma’s body is completely shattered but she smiles at the feeling. Making a note to come back here as much as she can. Even if the weather isn’t perfect like today.
The Superfriends greet her while she grabs her stuff to change. Alex stands and uses one of the blankets to block anyone’s view of Emma. Kara joins in and goes to the other side. Emma scoffs knowing full well she can change without showing anything and there has been no paparazzi bothering her.
Finally dry and feeling much warmer Emma sits next to Lena and places her head on her shoulder. She can’t help but yawn and let her eyes drift.
“Tired Em?” Alex teases from across the circle and smiles at Lena whose cheeks are tinged with red.
“Uhmm.” Emma confirms. “Do we have any more food?” She asks, keeping her eyes closed. “Or has Kara eaten it all?”
“Hey!” Kara swats Emma playfully but causes Emma to jump and glare at her. “Sorry! Did I hurt you?” Kara asks, panicked.
“No, I was just surprised.” Emma sighs before resting her head back on Lena’s shoulder.
“Well I did see a pizza place as we drove in. Maybe we can order?” Nia asks.
“Sounds like a good plan to me!” Emma gives a thumbs up. Pizza is one of her favourite foods.
With the joys of technology the friends order and half an hour later a pizza boy with a mountainful of pizza boxes comes towards them. They thank him and dig in. Emma grabs Lena and her pizza, two cans of soda and some salad left over from lunch.
“M’lady.” Emma holds out the cans which Lena takes. “I got some salad too.” Emma places the container in front of Lena.
“Thank you Em.” Lena says touched that Emma thought about her. She opens the lid and wonders how she can eat it. Looking up she sees Emma holding out a knife and fork for her and she smiles.
“You may need this.”
Lena grins back thanking her and takes the cutlery from the blonde.
Emma happily munches away at the pizza, rolling her eyes when the debate about Hawaiian pizza is brought up.
“Personally I don’t see anything wrong with it.” Sam defends laughing at Brainy’s stunned face.
“But to have a fruit on a savoury dish… it just does not compute.”
“Brainy.” Emma gets the alien’s attention. “Have you actually tried it?”
“No I have not.” He looks appalled that Emma would ask that.
“Then how’d you know if it doesn’t work?” Emma tilts her head.
After a moment of thinking Brainy nods. “Fair point.”
“Next game night I will order one and you can try it!” Sam says happily while winking at Emma, who smiles back.
“Just keep it away from me.” Alex says, shivering at the thought.
“Sorry to change the subject, buuutttt, Emma.” Kara says making Emma freeze while her last pizza slice was near her lips. She lowers it slightly while looking at her sister, who is beaming from ear to ear.
“Yea?”
“I saw you working on a song, wanna share it?”
All the Superfriends turn to look at Emma expectantly. Always appreciative of hearing anything Emma is working on. Taking a deep breath she lowers the slice back to the box and wipes her hands on a napkin.
“Peanut, you don’t have too.” Alex says glaring at Kara. Emma would do anything to make her sisters happy, Alex knew this. So did Kara. And yes, they would both exploit it sometimes.
“No, it’s okay. Would be great to get everyone's opinion.” Emma grabs her guitar and notebook. Reminding herself of the chords. “So… This… Well…” Sighing heavily, Emma closes her eyes to control her nerves. “I kind of imagine this as a duet, but with, well, the band breaking up. I may have to rethink it a bit.” Emma focuses on the fire in front of her, feeling too embarrassed to look at anyone.
She starts playing the chords and sings. Allowing the music to wash over and for her voice to carry with the wind. Emma adds the new verse but as she nears the end she feels her emotions take over, her frustration at her situation and the need to release it. She improvises. Closing her eyes and allowing herself to go with it.
Whoa-oh-ah-oh-ahh
Emma belts out, slamming her fingers into the guitar strings as she increases in passion and volume.
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in I'll never meet the ground Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us We're far from the shallow now
A smile graces Emma’s face as she lifts her head.
In the shallow, shallow In the shallow, shallow
Emma softens her voice, allowing the natural end of the song to take place.
In the shallow, shallow We're far from the shallow now.
Emma allows the last chord to hold longer than necessary. She keeps her eyes closed and waits.
A huge roar around her causes her to jump and open her eyes. A crowd has gathered round the group and are applauding her. The Superfriends all clap wildly too, Alex wipes tears from her face and Kara beams as brightly as the sun. Emma turns to look at Lena and her smile is as bright, if not brighter then Kara’s. Her green eyes simmering with tears. Emma watches as one falls and she gently reaches out and wipes it away with her thumb.
She then acknowledges the crowd with a small wave and thanks them with a bow of her head. They soon disperse, returning to their own groups and Emma sighs in relief.
“So, was the song okay?” Emma asks while picking at a chipped bit of wood on the base of her guitar.
“Okay?” Alex's voice booms causing Emma to quickly look at her sister. Alex’s eyes are wide. “Okay? Em that song… Wow I don’t have the words!”
“That’s what Lena said.” Emma smiles at the two women.
“Well it’s true.” Lena grins back, nudging her shoulder into the blonde’s.
The other Superfriends nod and agree.
“It really moved me.” Sam says smiling at Emma who blushes in response.
“Yes.” Brainy adds. “Very- touching.” Nia smiles at him. Emma grins too, happy Brainy was able to express himself.
Emma plays a few more well known songs and the Superfriends join in. But as the sun dips slowly into the horizon Emma stops and hands the guitar to James who continues playing. Not as well as Emma but enough.
Emma heads back towards the surf, wading in up to below her knees. Taking deep breaths she watches the colours change, memorising the rich reds, oranges and yellows. Lena comes and stands next to her. They watch in comfortable silence and Lena links her fingers with Emma’s. They smile softly to each other before watching the sun dip under the horizon.

The world based Stray Kids has appeared for the first time!
At the start of the year, I read a fortune telling column on some magazine, that I’ll have a new encounter during the latter half of the year. In the cold and brisk breeze, reminding me of winter’s arrival, I met Stray Kids in Seoul, Korea. They entered the set still looking sleepy. During the waiting times, they played with the cats on set, or teased each other, showing the natural sides of the group, the average age of the members being 19 years old. Different to the powerful faces they have on stage, another reason as to why they are popular. A little different to their normal styles, with the colourful outfits and ennui concept. Feel their first story through NYLON JAPAN.
Q. Firstly, please tell us how you feel about today’s shoot.
Bang Chan: As it is our first appearance on NYLON JAPAN, we are very honoured just by that. It has created a new precious memory for me.
Lee Know: Today’s set is a famous shooting area! I have always wanted to come here, so I am very happy to be here on such wonderful opportunity.
Changbin: It is a derelict amusement park, and it was great to be able to shoot in the unique atmosphere. I was able to have fun by feeling like I was back in my childhood.
Hyunjin: From the styling, it had a different feeling to our other photoshoots. Personally, I had a lot of fun as the costumes were different to usual styles.
Han: It’s been a while since we had a location shooting! As it is surrounded by mountains and trees, the air was good and I had a great time from the morning.
Felix: As we began filming from the morning, I felt refreshed and because we were with the members, I had a great time!
Seungmin: I have actually seen a Japanese photo book before, and it was interesting because I was wearing something similar as to what the model was wearing in the photo book. There were many cats in the set, and it was really funny to see Lee Know taking care of the cats because he seemed like a butler.
I.N.: The shoot was fun, but because I heard it was the ruins of an old amusement park, I was a little scared at first. However, the air was nice and I was able to shoot with a good feeling.
Q. You wore outfits with a lot of colours today, but do you have any styles you are liking recently?
BC: Always black! I think its my colour. All black fashion, I usually like to wear monotone looks.
LK: I actually am not really interested in fashion... I used to think about it before, but these days I like to wear whatever is most comfortable.
CB: As winter is approaching, I want to wear things that make me seem softer, or things that are large and relaxed styles.
HJ: I usually wear cute sweats, hoodie t-shirts, and big sweatpants so I think I’ll like to wear warmer things for the winter.
FX: Its getting quite cold recently, so I like wearing a fur hood outer these days! I like to feel the warmth from my outers.
HN: I don’t really prefer any fashion styles, but my style is quite showy compared to the others. The costume I wore today was colourful and I liked it, I want to keep trying lots of styles.
SM: I often like to wear long padding downs, long coats, trench coats, and long outers in general. Coats that go to my knees are warm and I like them. I was happy because my costume for today was a long coast as well. Its my style!
IN: I’m interested in street fashion these days, I used to like clothes that fitted my body, these days I like wearing wide pants, kind of like a newtro (new and retro) style.
Q. What is your favourite (pop) culture?
BC: I have always liked games, but recently, I’ve been busy and haven’t been able to do it much. But whenever I have a little time, I always want to do it... its a stress reliever for me!
LK: I watch a lot of films. Recently, I watched a film released in 2003 called “A Tale of Two Sisters” with Han. It was a horror film, but it was really great!
CB: I’m into music and YouTube. I’ve been listening to senior Kpop artists such as TVXQ and Super Junior, groups I was into when I was younger. On YouTube, I watch funny contents with fresh ideas.
HJ: I’m really into an artist called “Leellamarz” these days, I’ve only been listening to them. I have always been the type to only focus on one thing when I’m into it.
HN: I like band music, so I’ve been listening to “One Ok Rock”, and recently, I’ve been listening to an English band called “Young Blood”. It’s great.
SM: Listening to band music is a hobby of mine. After listening to DAY6 senior’s songs, I listen to a lot of rock bands these days. It’s great fun to listen to the vocals, keyboard, and bass individually. I don’t know many bands so I’m still learning. The band I began to like recently is “Green Day”. I think their music is fun and good. (Bang Chan began to sing Green Day) If I’m ever going to play any instruments, I want to try the melody parts like the guitar, keyboard, or piano!
IN: Rather than watching movies, I like reading reviews other people wrote. I like to compare my own thoughts to how other people found it. I look for many reviews and enjoy reading them.
Q. Then we’ll move onto questions about music. Unlike other groups, Stray Kids can self produce their songs which is a strength, but is there anything you pay attention to or focus on?
BC: We create our own songs and weave it into the concept, making a performance. And, I think it is the most important part about self producing is to definitely put our message into our songs. We believe it is our strength to be able to tell our message from the bottom of our hearts, and Stray Kids cannot exist without that, which is our self producing.
HN: As Bang Chan said, we like to make songs that our fans can understand, but what we focus on is having others relate to us. We try to incorporate all the feelings, anxiety, and experiences that people our age might feel into our lyrics, and we really try to have other people relate to us.
Q. What do you think are the problems of the people in their 10′s have?
HN: There are a lot of young people now that don’t know what to do with themselves now, right? They are facing who they are on the insides, but they aren’t sure. So, I focus on putting in the feelings of not knowing what to do, or not knowing which way is the right way in the lyrics.
Q. Next, I’ll ask a question your beauty. Please tell us the secrets on how you stay good looking all the time
HN: Honestly... I was born good looking so... hahaha! There isn’t anything. Next, fashionista Changbin!
CB: I think its better if you don’t stress if you want a nice or gentle look. Its important to think positively all the time!
BC: To take in nutritional food once every day! There’s no point if your body isn’t healthy!
SM: Rather than being good looking, I think it is important to keep in mind the feelings I had towards music when I started as a Stray Kids member. A straightforward heart!
FX: When I’m on stage playing with the members or performing, or when I am communicating with the fans, I think thats when we look the best.
HJ: Isn’t how good we look on stage the true style for us? Even when we make a little mistake during practise, we practise until we go on stage and make sure the outcome is a 100%. We can accomplish that because we try that hard. We heighten ourselves to the best version of ourselves, and as professionals, we showcase the perfect version on stage. I believe that is how Stray Kids maintain our good looks,
LK: I used to go on diets and care about how I look on the outside, but now I’m focusing on who I am, trying to face my own heart.
IN: Who I am on camera and off camera, me on stage and off stage, I try to make sure its all the same me. My definition of good looking is whoever that can be truly who they are, wherever they are. I always try to maintain that mindset!
Q. Okay, so how you maintain your good looks differs. How about a easier question now - please tell us anything that you specifically focus on in terms of eating habits
HJ: I always make sure if there are no eggplants in my meals! I really don’t like eggplants. The members always try to make me eat eggplants, so sometimes I eat them without noticing.
BC: There is something that I specifically focus on. It’s table manners. To not make noise when I’m eating, if I blow my nose I make sure I won’t trouble the people around me. It’s also important to chew a lot during meals, so I try to chew a lot.
SM: I don’t eat dinner the day before a shoot. Instead, I eat everything I want to eat for breakfast and lunch! I’m the type to lose weight if I don’t eat, so I make sure of how much I eat the day before.
HN: On off days, there are days where I don’t eat properly, but I have decided to eat something I really want to eat deliciously once a day! Within the group, I don’t have a lot of likes and dislikes, and I think I eat a lot. Even if I bloat the next day, there’s no point if I have no strength! Really, its an excuse though haha.
FX: I’m starting to like eating spicy foods! But, when I eat spicy foods, my body doesn’t handle it too well. I get stomach aches. Days before I have schedules, I refrain from eating spicy foods.
IN: I don’t snack at night! I really bloat easily.
Members: Han is a night snacker, so I.N. always says he’s envious of him!
IN: When I began snacking at night, I can’t stop. I eat the next night too... I can’t stop myself. So I made a promise with myself to stop. I allow myself to snack at night about twice a month!
BC: I try not to snack at night, but I usually can’t help myself and end up eating.
LK: To work out, I’ve been taking a lot of protein lately. I eat whatever I want to eat and take in proteins. I heard about green tea diet before and I was drinking Green Tea frappuccino but it was no use... But, salad and hamburger is good for dieting. Because its filled with carbs, proteins and vitamins, right?
Members: That’s Lee Know’s excuse!
CB: I should take care of what I eat, but I don’t. There is one thing I do focus on, though. I don’t eat cold food and cold drinks. Cold food isn’t good for the body... But, if there are only cold food, I warm it up in my mouth before I drink it in. It’s good for digestion too.
Q. The key content for this month is “fortune telling”, but have any of you had your fortune told before?
LK, HN, IN: We have!
Nylon: Did you believe the results from those fortune tellings?
IN: I was told 2015 won’t be a good year, but 2016 will be better...
HN: At that time, I.N. and I were part of a project. We went to a fortune telling together, and we were told “August will not be a great month” and August was really crazy. I was scolded all the time! Even the smallest things I was scolded for... I should only look at the positive things from a fortune telling, haha!
LK: I was told that my luck will go up when I’m around 30...
Members: Hahaha! How many more years do you have to wait?
IN: I actually don’t believe in fortune tellings. My parents went to a fortune teller before, and the fortune teller told them their son will either become a judge or a prosecutor. Thats why I didn’t believe in it... but, when I went with Han when I was a trainee, I thought fortune tellings are quite nice, so now I believe in half of it?
Q. A lot of the readers of NYLON JAPAN are people who treasure their individuality. Please give an advice or message to those who have dreams and ambitions.
IN: Don’t care about what other’s say about your individuality, and work on your own pace!
BC: There probably are people around you that accept your individuality, and people who relates to you and became your friends. I think it is important to be able to push on for what you enjoy.
HN: I want the people to talk about how happy and blessed they are. Even having a dream is a big part of happiness. I hope your dreams will come true!
Q. The theme for NYLON JAPAN’s 15th anniversary is “NEW POWER NO BORDER”, but is there anything of this that you relate to?
FX: NEW POWER NO BORDER! (in his native accent)
BC: We always say our greeting by saying “STEP OUT!”. This “step out” means “stepping out of the borders”. With our own style, and our own music, we want to step out of the borders! This “Border” means “border” right? That’s something I relate to.
Q. What do you want to tell the youths?
HN: There are people with dreams and people without dreams. Those who have dreams may stumble at some moments, and hard times may come along. But, if you can get over those hard times, your dreams will definitely be accomplished. For those who do not have dreams, don’t worry and look at who you are carefully. It’s not late when you find interest in something new, and I hope you’d be able to have some space for that in your heart. “Those who are talented cannot surpass those who try, and those who try cannot surpass those who have fun.” Even at the hardest times, trying your best won’t backstab you, and whatever you are doing, having fun is the best. I really want to tell them those words!
BC: It’s a little simple, but “Just enjoy!” Even at difficult situations, I think the winners are those who stay laughing. If you can have fun, good times will come. You’re still young, and life is long so “carpe diem” !
IN: Even if you can’t see the future, don’t worry about not being able to see, and it’ll be good if you focus on where you are now.
Members: Those are words for us too
Q. Within your busy schedules, what stimulates you?
LK: This is obvious, but STAY’s are a biggest motivation! This is a fact!
BC: We’re really busy and there are so many things to get done, but interestingly, when I’m talking to the members, I think “maybe the future is bright?”. I feel like I don’t have to worry. The members help me. The existence of a group is good for the energy too. We can take care of each other and stimulate each other!
Q. I didn’t think you’d enjoy this as much. Now, the interview has come to an end. Lastly, you announced your Japan debut! Please tell us how you are feeling about your Japan debut
BC: It has been about a year and a half since we debuted as Stray Kids in Korea, but we are “debuting again” in Japan, which is a new feeling. Everything is new and exciting! We really can’t wait for our Japan debut! We’re all very motivated! Fighting!

46. “OH MY GOSH SHUT UP THEY’RE GOING TO KILL US!”
66. “How did you manage to get us lost in a corn maze?”
🎃🎃🎃
Crisp fall days were the way you always really felt yourself getting into the holiday season. It was hard to get into the Halloween spirit when it was 75 degrees and still humid. So, when the temperature first dropped down to the high 50s in New York and there was a slight breeze in the air, you hit up your friends to head out of the city for a Saturday. There was a perfect fall place that you knew of called the Farmstead that had a pumpkin patch, sunflower fields, hot apple cider, hay rides, and corn mazes (of both the scary and non scary variety).
Everyone replied in the group chat that they’d be able to make it: Rami, Lucy, Ben, Gwilym, and Joe. You rolled your eyes when you saw the dumb pun that Joe sent to the group.
Joe: Hell yeah I’m down, the group that spooks together stays together #SquadGhouls!
Y/N: Save it for the Instagram post Mazzello
It wasn’t that you disliked Joe, he was just… annoying a lot of the time. Plus, the two of you brought out each other’s competitive sides, which led to a lot of heated moments. Rami and Gwil thought you two hated each other and were always surprised when the two of you made sure to include each other in the group plans, going as far as to make sure that it worked for the other’s work schedule. Lucy and Ben thought you should just fuck and get it over with.
Day of, Joe came around to pick everyone up since he was the one with the SUV that could hold all six of you. He was picking you up last since your place was the furthest along the way there. When he pulled up to the curb, you were surprised to see that the passenger seat was still open. You assumed that Gwil or Ben would’ve been sitting there.
As you got in and said hi to everyone, Joe explained the reasoning, “I figured you should sit in the front since you’re the one that knows where we’re going. Plus you have the least weird taste in music out of any of the others.”
All four of the others protested, but you talked over them, “I’ll take that sad excuse of a compliment. And hush up all of you, you know it’s true. Ben and Gwil, you guys always try to play that weird euro-techno stuff, and Rami and Lucy, no one else likes the death metal.”
Joe laughed, Lucy and Ben flipped you off, Gwil made a shocked face, but Rami just drawled, “What can I say? She converted me.”
That set all of you off, and Joe started driving in the direction of the destination as everyone caught their breath.
It was about an hour and a half drive and you all amused yourselves with catching up, recountings of old stories, and a song guessing game. Ben was in the lead when you were in charge of the music, but that was because neither you nor Joe were playing. When the two of you kept heckling the others however, Ben grabbed the phone from you and had you and Joe face off. Rami and Gwil had wide eyes full of concern that something drastic would happen like you grabbing the steering wheel to throw Joe off or Joe screaming at you about the answer instead of looking at the road. Lucy saw where Ben’s thought process was going and egged the two of you on.
Luckily for everyone’s safety, you and Joe were able to keep civilized; he focused his eyes on the road and you didn’t distract him as the two of you fought for the answers. It was a game of back and forth, though. Joe would get an answer first, and on the next song you would. Then you would remember the title of a song but not the band and Joe would have the opposite predicament. After about half an hour of the score volleying, you arrived at the destination, but neither of you would let anyone get out of the car until the tie was decided.
Ben conferred with Lucy for a second, leaning over the back of his shared bench seat with Gwilym before describing the rules, “It’s sudden death, you can listen to the first thirty seconds of the song and then tell us the song, artist, and album. The one who gets the most elements wins.”
They played the song, and you knew it with just the first two seconds. Joe looked confident too as they stopped the song. You bit your lip in anticipation and noticed Joe look at your lips and wet his own in what you assumed was the same nervousness.
“Okay, driver first. What’s your guess Joe?” Ben asked, and everyone leaned forward to hear him.
He cleared his throat and then said with conviction, “Queen, ‘Sheer Heart Attack,’ from the album of the same name.”
Ben’s face did not change at all, and neither did Rami or Gwil’s (though their lack of change was more from a lack of knowledge than remaining impartial). You saw Lucy’s eyes widen ever so slightly and were unable to keep the smirk off of your face.
“Okay, Y/N, what about you?” Ben asked.
“Queen, ‘Sheer Heart Attack,’ and News of the World,” you replied with 100% confidence.
“Fuck,” Joe said under his breath as Rami and Gwil gasped at the difference in answers.
“Y/N is correct. ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ was originally written for the same album, but it was not published until News of the World,” Ben said in a stoic voice and the others erupted into a chorus of “ohhhs.”
Joe stuck his hand out to shake yours and said, “Good game, Y/N.”
“You too. Although I am a little surprised at you. A bit of an amateur move, Joey,” you replied in a teasing voice. Joe’s grip tightened around your hand and his eyes darkened, but you didn’t know whether it was out of anger or something else.
You shivered under his intense gaze and he noticed, “Cold already? We haven’t even gotten out of the car.” He didn’t let you make up an excuse before he let go of your hand and turned off the car, quickly opening the door and getting out.
Shaking whatever that feeling was from your head, you grabbed your gloves and scarf and joined the others in climbing out of the car. The six of you made your way over to the entrance and paid the fee that would allow you to go anywhere and do anything. They stamped the back of your hands with a cute little jack-o-lantern stamp and you continued onto the property.
The afternoon was spent picking out pumpkins and then carving them at the station they had already set up. Rami and Lucy worked together on a giant one that they carved into a spooky graveyard scene, you did a traditional jack-o-lantern face, Gwil made his into a cat, Joe did a creepier type of jack-o-lantern with sharp teeth, and Ben didn’t let anyone see his until he was done.
Ben turned it around with a, “tah-dah!” and revealed an incredibly intricate forest scene with delicately carved trees, an owl, and a glowing moon. All of you gasped softly in response.
“Ben, I never knew you were so good at pumpkin carving!” Lucy exclaimed as you all took a closer look.
“What can I say? I’m a bit of an artíste,” he said with a smirk, causing everyone to laugh. Travelling in a group, you all took your pumpkins back to the car, stashing them in the trunk before heading back into the Farmstead.
For the next hour or so, you all took turns taking pictures with different pumpkins, in the sunflower field, and with an array of scarecrows. When the sun was just starting to sink in the sky, you decided to go on a hayride before it was too dark. It was a big old tractor pulling a trailer that was lined with hay bales along the sides and the back. You and Joe climbed in first, each planning to sit at the end of either side. However, as you were sitting down across from each other, Lucy grabbed you and Ben grabbed Joe, both roughly pushing you to sit down at the head of the trailer, squished in next to each other.
Then Lucy sat diagonally to you on the side, as did Ben with Joe, Rami and Gwil sitting on the other side of them. Effectively, you and Joe were trapped sitting next to each other. Joe shot Ben a puzzled look which he ignored, and you rolled your eyes at Lucy who just winked at you. Two more couples got on, filling up the four empty seats.
The person who would be driving the tractor climbed up, holding five medium sized flannel blankets. It had cooled down considerably since the afternoon, and it would be especially cold sitting still. They tossed a blanket to each pair then climbed down and went to get in the tractor and start the ride.
“Here, you can have the blanket,” Joe told you, handing you the folded up blanket he caught.
You took it from him, but replied, “Oh please, it’s freezing, literally freezing, and this blanket is plenty big for the two of us. Just scoot closer.”
Joe moved like two inches closer to you, but the gap between you was still about 6 inches across. You rolled your eyes at his hesitancy.
“Like this,” you said, moving until your thigh was firmly pressed against his. “I won’t bite.”
You watched his adam’s apple bob as he swallowed, though you couldn’t tell whether it was because of your closeness or your words. You ignored the implication that either way it was because of you.
Draping the blanket over your legs, you smoothed it out, brushing your hands across both of your laps. It was mostly an innocent touch, but you were also testing out your theory. Although he tried to hide it, his breath hitched when you got a little further up his lap, but you kept your hand from going anywhere that would make what you were doing obvious. You smiled to yourself triumphantly, but put a pleasant smile on your face as the hay ride started.
The hay ride was fun, and you all took more pictures. It did get pretty cold, and you had to huddle closer to Joe, for purely warmth reasons. You all chatted, but also took time to just enjoy each other’s company in silence.
When the hay ride ended, you all decided to grab a snack before choosing the next activity. There was a little shack of a café that sold caramel apples, apple cider, soups, and hot sandwiches. Everyone got something to fill their stomachs and warm up a little. Once everyone was done, there was talk about what to do next. Lucy and Rami wanted to go to the scary maze, since it was finally dark enough to be good, but Gwil and Ben seemed a little scared of doing so. You weren’t so scared, but you did want to go through the regular maze because you wanted to solve it, and you convinced Gwil and Ben to come with you. Joe seemed like he was leaning towards the scary maze, but you could tell that Lucy wanted some time with just Rami (or maybe she just wanted you and Joe to go together, who knows?).
“Joe, why don’t you come with us? Bet I’d be better at solving the maze than you are,” you said, making it interesting for him.
“Oh, you’re so on,” he said, moving to join where the three of you were standing.
“Okay, perfect. Meet back at the shack by 11:00?” Rami asked and everyone agreed. He and Lucy headed off towards the scary maze hand-in-hand, already giggling in excitement.
“Aw, aren’t they just the cutest?” you said aloud, and then turned to see the three boys watching them walk away with the same adoration in their eyes as they nodded.
“Alright, come on, boys,” you said, linking arms with Joe and Ben who were closest to you. Gwil linked arms with Ben on his other side and the four of you headed off to the entrance of the maze.
“Look at us, we’re like The Wizard of Oz,” Joe said cheerfully and you all laughed.
“Wait, then who’s who?” Ben asked curiously.
“Well, I think it fits that I’m Dorothy, especially since I’m the one that’ll be leading this quest,” you started.
“I resent that,” Joe interrupted.
You shot him a look and continued, “Gwil is definitely the Cowardly Lion because he was the first to say no to the scary maze.”
Gwil shrugged and said, “I’ll own up to that. I don’t like being scared.”
“Then Ben is the Scarecrow,” you started, and Ben made a sound of disapproval. “Just because your blonde hair matches the straw, Benny,” you added, ruffling his hair.
“Y/N, not the hair,” he complained, dropping your arm to fix it.
Taking advantage of you not being attached to Ben anymore, Joe tightened his arm around yours and tugged you to the side.
“What’s next, you gonna call Gwil ‘Gwilly’? And what, I’m the Tin Man ‘cause I’m heartless?” Joe practically growled in your ear.
Frowning in confusion at his first question, you wondered what about you calling Ben ‘Benny’ would have made him mad. Nevertheless, you couldn’t stop the shiver that took over your body at his closeness, but tried to return to a neutral face, “It’s the only one left, and it’s not a perfect metaphor. You’re the one who brought it up, anyway. Plus, if you’d ever read the book, you’d know he has quite the love story.”
Joe’s arm relaxed around yours slightly at your words, and the frown on his face changed from annoyed to confused. To your surprise, though, he didn’t release your arm and you stayed linked as you continued walking. Not that you necessarily wanted to get away.
The four of you reached the entrance, and Ben and Gwil took maps, but you and Joe refused to look at them. You dropped Joe’s arm once you were all inside the entrance and turned back to face everyone.
“Let’s split up,” you said plainly.
“Let’s not,” Gwil and Ben said in unison.
“I’m not prepared to face anything in this maze with any less than three other people,” Gwil said, unrelenting.
“But Gwil it’s not even the scary maze. There’s nothing in there that will jump out at you,” Joe tried to reason with him.
“That’s exactly what they want you to think,” Ben said, shifting his gaze from side to side as if he were a conspiracy theorist trying not to let on that he knew a secret.
“Yeah,” Gwil agreed.
“Oh come on, how are Joe and I supposed to compete if we’re in the same group?” you asked them and Joe made a sound of agreement.
“Ummm…” Ben hesitated, but Gwil had been looking at one of the maps and spoke up.
“Ah ha! It says here that the fastest anyone’s ever gotten out was in 36 minutes. Why don’t you two just work together to beat that time?”
You and Joe looked at each other and sized up what the other was thinking. Coming to the same conclusion, you said simultaneously, “Okay.”
“I’ll go tell the people at the entrance that we want to be timed, and then we’ll get a move on it,” Joe told you and you nodded before he jogged off to tell them. He was back in a second, and you started right away.
“Okay, if we stick to one side the entire time, it’s a surefire way to get out,” Joe told you.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking. Left side? Let’s go,” you confirmed, and the two of you took off purposefully, leaving Gwil and Ben hurrying to keep up.
It was a pretty simple way to solve a maze, but it worked way better than just wandering around and hoping for the best. Every so often, your group would come across what looked like a real path, but you weren’t sure. One time, you were about to head down one of them when you stopped the others.
“Wait, this isn’t a real path. All of the others have been about four feet across, and I’d say this one is only about three and a half. Also, you can see where some of the stalks have been trampled down instead of cut,” you pointed out, matter-of-factly.
“You’re right. Good catch,” Joe said seriously and the two of you moved to the next real path.
“They’re like fucking bloodhounds,” Ben said in disbelief.
“Yeah,” Gwil laughed with him. The laugh died in their throats though when you and Joe rounded a corner and they couldn’t see you anymore. They basically ran to catch up to you, and you and Joe both laughed at their harriedness.
“Real talk, guys, if you ever do lose us, just go southwest and you’ll find the exit. Even if you have to make some new paths, you’ll get there,” Joe informed them.
“And how exactly are we supposed to know which way is southwest?” Gwil asked incredulously.
“The sky, duh,” Joe replied.
“Are you sure you weren’t a soldier in a past life or something?” Ben said in confusion.
“No, I just played one on TV,” Joe joked and you laughed, lightly touching his arm. He laughed along with you, looking at you cheerfully.
“That’s fine, don’t tell us. We’ll just die out here when you ditch us because you have to win,” Gwil said grumpily, though you knew it was more to make you feel bad than him actually being worried.
“Aw Gwil-” you stopped yourself from saying Gwilly, remembering what Joe had said earlier. You shot a glance his way to see him looking relieved that you hadn’t and then continued, “We would never desert you guys.”
Gwil looked satisfied with your reply, and so you hit your hands together and said, “Let’s get to it, then!”
The rest of the maze was going well, and by your own timing, it had only been 25 minutes and you could tell you were close to the end. That is until the two of you let Ben and Gwil take the lead for a minute since they said they had figured out how the system worked.
You and Joe were walking behind them and chatting when you noticed a similar pile of corn cobs as you had seen before. You pointed to them and asked, “Haven’t we seen those before?”
Joe looked at them closer and replied in exasperation, “Yes, we absolutely have.”
“Ben, Gwil, How did you manage to get us lost in a corn maze?” you asked them, bringing your hand to the bridge of your nose.
“Um…” Ben was at a loss for words again.
“Isn’t that the whole point of a corn maze?” Gwil asked sheepishly.
“Not when you’re trying to beat the best time!” Joe insisted.
“You guys said you knew what you were doing,” you reminded them.
“Oh come on, we can’t be trusted to do this kind of stuff. It’s on you guys for believing us in the first place. You should be mad at yourselves,” Ben said, pointing an accusatory finger at you both.
“Believe me, we are,” you said, giving up on being mad at them. Ben was right, they were always getting lost, and they were too cute to stay mad at anyways.
“If we hurry, we can still do this. We didn’t pass this place the first time too long ago,” Joe encouraged you and you agreed.
Staying in front this time, you and Joe set off a faster pace to make up for having to retrace your path. Gwil and Ben trailed a little, not far enough to lose sight of you, but far enough that they could complain under their breath for their perceived mistreatment.
“I can’t believe they’re blaming us for that,” Ben complained to Gwil.
“I know, it’s not like we tried to get lost,” Gwil grumbled.
They were silent for a couple seconds and then there was a rustle of corn stalks somewhere behind them.
“Shhhh,” Gwil told Ben.
“What are you shushing, I haven’t said anything,” Ben pointed out.
“Can you hear that? Something’s moving behind us,” Gwil whispered and Ben listened with him. Sure enough, they were more sounds of movement, and they were creeping closer and closer to the boys faster and faster.
Looking at each other with fear in their eyes, they screamed, starting to run to catch up to you and Joe.
Startled by their screams, you and Joe turned back to see what was happening. Joe saw what was coming first and pulled you to the side with him to keep you from getting hit. You were just in time to see a blur of long limbs and shorter, more powerful ones running past you and hear Gwil yell, “OH MY GOSH THEY’RE GOING TO KILL US!”
The two of you tried to yell “wait” after them, but they just kept going. Luckily for them, you and Joe had only been about 200 feet from the exit, and they were able to run straight out of the maze.
You and Joe looked at each other in confusion and then looked behind where you were standing to see two kids jogging towards you. They didn’t slow down, instead just calling out an explanation, “We’re trying to beat the record, excuse us.”
Realizing that your friends had been scared out of their wits by two twelve year old kids made you and Joe crack up. The two of you laughed, leaning on each other to stay upright as you lost your breath and wiped tears of laughter from your eyes.
“Oh my- oh my gosh, I can’t believe they were so scared-” you got out between heaves of breath before you dissolved into another fit of giggles.
“I know, I didn’t think- didn’t think either of them could run that fast. You know, Ben’s not really a cardio guy, and Gwil hates to run,” Joe said, which just sent you two into another full on laugh-attack.
After a little while, the laughs died down and the two of you were left standing incredibly close, breathing heavily in the same proximity so that you were sharing the same breath. The smiles died from your faces as you continually stared into each other’s eyes, searching for a sign that you should do exactly what you were both thinking about.
You didn’t even know what you were going to say next, but you started with, “Joey-” and that was his sign. He closed the distance between you and crashed his lips against yours, taking what was left of your breath in a searing kiss.
Moaning into it, your mouth opened slightly and Joe took the chance to run his tongue just along the inside of your bottom lip. You followed his tongue with yours and wrapped your arms around his neck, keeping him unbelievably close.
His arms went to your waist, and even through the layers of your coat, sweater, and undershirt, you could feel the warm pressure of his hands on you that made your skin burn for more.
Before the kiss could go anywhere else, you heard laughter coming from around the corner and broke apart, smiling at each other for a second before you started walking towards the entrance. You didn’t say anything, but Joe linked your arm through his again and you leaned into him.
As you exited the maze, you found Ben and Gwil standing together, looking pretty embarrassed.
“Hey guys, you doing okay?” Joe asked in mock concern.
“Yeah, or do we have a couple of twelve year olds to give a stern talking to?” you said in the same tone.
“Very funny,” Gwil said sarcastically.
“Yeah, by the way, those twelve year olds just beat the record and you two are two minutes too late,” Ben taunted, trying to get the mocking off of him and Gwil.
“I’m okay with that,” you said calmly.
“Yeah me too,” Joe agreed.
“Who even are you?” Gwil questioned, looking at you two suspiciously as if you were about to go off and blame the two of them for losing the contest. Ben on the other hand saw the way your arms were linked and noticed the flush of Joe’s cheeks that hadn’t been there earlier, even from the cold, and came to his own conclusion.
Before Ben could say anything, you spoke up, “Shouldn’t we head to the shack? It’s almost 11:00.”
“I s’pose,” Ben conceded, and the four of you linked up again, though this time Gwil was next to you and Ben was on the other side of Joe. Someone started skipping and soon you all joined in, so you arrived, out of breath and cheery to find Lucy and Rami sipping on some hot apple cider outside the shack.
They laughed at the sight of you and Lucy asked, “So, how did it go?”
“Pretty well, until Gwil and Ben literally ran screaming out of it because two kids had been walking behind them,” you explained as everyone dropped their arms, Joe hesitating for a second before dropping his from yours too. Lucy caught it, but didn’t say anything, instead she just stood there with a thoughtful look on her face.
“Guys, I know you don’t have that much experience with kids, but trust me, they’re not that scary,” Rami said, and everyone but Ben and Gwil laughed.
“Whatever, I’m going to go get some cider,” Gwil said and turned on his heel to head inside.
“Yeah, uh, me too,” Ben said, following him in there.
Joe leaned in and said to you, “I’ll be right back.”
Lucy, again, noticed it and gave you a knowing look, “So, Y/N, anything else happen in the corn maze? Anything Ben will be excited to tell me about?”
“Well, Joe and I were trying to beat the time for solving it, but when Ben and Gwil distracted us, we decided to let those kids win instead,” you replied, being purposefully obtuse.
“Haven’t you said before that nothing could distract you from winning? Seems like something as trivial as the boys being scared or some kids wouldn’t stop you,” Lucy pointed out, trying to get you to admit that something had transpired between you and Joe.
You didn’t want to give her the satisfaction and were about to give a counter argument when Joe, Ben, and Gwil all emerged from the shack.
Joe was carrying two cups of cider and handed one to you, “Careful, it’s hot.”
Taking it from him with a smile, you leaned in and whispered, “Thank you, Joey.”
He wavered for a second, nearly dropping his cup before he regained his composure. That was certainly one experiment you had discovered the solution for: call him Joey more.
“You’re welcome,” he managed, voice cracking on the second word.
You giggled softly and then turned to see the whole group watching the two of you. As soon as they were caught, they all turned to each other and started their own conversations, extremely obviously trying to cover up.
Making eye contact with Joe, you rolled your eyes and he did the same, before taking the lead in walking back to the car. Everyone piled in, careful of their cider, and Joe had the car on with the heat blasting as soon as he could.
You put on some soft music à la Fleetwood Mac and James Taylor. With the heat and the music to lull them, soon everyone but you and Joe had conked out. Looking back, you chuckled at how Gwil and Ben were more cuddled up than Rami and Lucy were.
When he saw in the rearview mirror that everyone was asleep, Joe sucked in a breath and said, “So…”
“So…?” you asked.
“So I had a really good time tonight. Working with you to win a game, for a change,” he went on.
“Yeah, I did too. Maybe we should try more of it in the future,” you suggested, moving your hand to touch his where it was resting on the middle console.
He intertwined his fingers with yours and squeezed your hand in his, “Yes, we definitely should.”
Neither of you knew it, but Lucy had woken briefly when Joe started talking and saw the two of you holding hands. She smiled happily to herself before snuggling closer to Rami and closing her eyes again to fall back asleep.

I dunno if anyone else has this thing that I have but I felt like sharing to get my mind off other things
My brain is like a music encyclopedia. No I do not mean I remember the names of songs and artists or anything actually useful like that, but I have this uncanny ability of recognizing the notes of obscure songs I have heard before.
FOR EXAMPLE Before any Hulu show theres that low humming sound while they show you the rating for whatever show you’re watching. And everytime I hear that hum, it is the EXACT note/sound that plays right before Asia’s Heat of the Moment so I bother the fuck out of my mom by hearing that sound, clapping, and blurting “I NEVER MEANT TO BE SO BAD TO YOU” because otherwise it’s just a note and it bothers me, not completing the melody.
There’s way more examples of this. Most often I will be in the middle of listening to other songs and a very similar sounding key or melody will make me think of that other song, so I start singing that other song over the one I’m currently listening to. Honeypot by JAWNY is in the same exact key as Cake by the Ocean by DNCE and I’ll sing that chorus over HoneyPie everytime I hear it. Most of the time I don’t actually know what the song s I’m singing are, like their names and artists, I just remember the tune. I had to specifically look up Cake by the Ocean to even make that reference here. (Btw, do you hear it?)
I can’t turn this off! It always amuses me greatly when I realize another song sounds like a song I’m listening to, or one chime or note reminds me of a random chorus, and I’ll sing whatever songs they remind me of. Which... tends to annoy the hell out of my friends and family who don’t know what I’m talking about or referencing
This also happens with obscure movie quotes. Someone will say one word with the same vocal cadance of a character from a movie or TV show and I quote that show or movie and giggle to myself while no one else understands what the hell im talking about.
My brain makes these audio connections all the time and for me it’s like brain teasers and a big accomplishment when I recognize the key of another song or remember a weird quote, but it bothers most of the people I hang out with.
Does anyone else experience this, or something similar to this?? I’ve always wondered but I’ve never had the patience to put it into words. I hope this all makes sense lmao. Anyway.

TWO NEW FILMS
Tumblr media
Viewed by Henri Duvernois
Le Bataillon des sans-amour [Battalion of the Unloved]
(The Mayor of Hell)
I was greatly moved by this film. The dreadful existence of some delinquent children, I believe, can never be shown enough. And it is not blindly optimistic to declare most of them capable of reform. During my research for a novel, I discussed this subject with the man most qualified to do so, the head of instruction at the Petite Roquette [a Paris prison for boys 7-20]. He told me flat out:
“Eight out of ten, at least, if they are treated kindly, intelligently, gently, are capable of becoming splendid fellows. And I myself would not hesitate to have them associate with my own children. If you write a book on this subject, your surest inspiration will be pity.”
He told me this at a time when France did not yet have a juvenile court, and where judges, broken-hearted—more than once I saw tears in their eyes—were obliged to condemn a poor tubercular starveling of twelve, guilty only of vagrancy and not the slightest crime.
The effect of these films on the public is healthy. There are still too many martyred children—as recent news items show—but there are, above all, unrecognized, too many unfortunate children. Their sad stories do not always end in suicide, like the poor little Rozentweig child, victim of brutish imbeciles [a minor cause célèbre of 1933: Sonia Rozensweig, 13, a refugee Polish Jew, drowned herself after an encounter involving herself, a 7-year-old brother or cousin, and a local shopkeeper, which ended in the police station; leftwing and rightwing papers gave widely divergent accounts of the affair], or the baby slowly tortured by an appalling stepmother. Children are beaten. Children are, morally, abandoned. I was struck by these lines, during the courtroom scene of the film: “I’m sick of supporting him!” says one father, to which the boy replies, “When did you ever support me?”
The battalion of the unloved, then, is made up of young vagabonds left to the streets by the carelessness or poverty of their parents. A director may, through his careful reproduction of life, make a work of art at art’s finest: the sensitive transposition of truth. So it is here. The actors are between twelve and fifteen years old. Each, by his physical appearance, voice, costume, is a chapter of a  novel. Here is the snitch, the traitor, who steals and pillages but can and will sell out his comrades. Here is the leader, quick to deal out chastisement, bolder and more energetic than the others, more dangerous too, in whose generous nature his good and bad instincts are at war. A kind word, a caress may save him. But one must divine his heart and pierce his tough shell to reach it. There is the hate-filled one, who would love with the same fervor if he were given the chance; the fat kid, greedy and lazy; the pickaninny who follows the gang because he’s hungry; the sickly boy who wants to have a little fun before he dies.
The whole gang is condemned to reform school. The latter is directed by one Thompson, whom the film’s authors have perhaps made too starkly a villain. There are (and, above all, there have been) a good many of these civil servants who, without being monsters of cruelty like Thompson, even while undeviatingly pursuing their duty—what they believe is their duty—have produced equally deplorable results.
But there must be a counterforce: Dorothy, the reform school’s nurse. She is not satisfied merely to take care of the boys when they are ill. She wants them to be better treated and better fed. Her smile and her blondeness perform the miracle. An inspector is named, an insouciant young man placed there by crooked politicians. For love of Dorothy, he no longer smiles and approves. He furloughs the savage director and takes his place. Surprise! The mess hall’s foul gruel is replaced by bacon and eggs and cream cakes. The boys are made responsible for organizing themselves; they name one judge, another chief of police, etc. There is laughter and song in what once was hell. But the director returns. By a rather too neat coincidence, Gargan, the inspector, is charged with murder. The other triumphs. Once again the school is a prison. A little TB case, confined to an icy cell, dies of cold. The boys revolt, a torch-bearing mob. Terrified, the director jumps off a roof and falls to his death. Gargan, found innocent, returns. Order is restored and Gargan will marry Dorothy.
The film is full of exquisite details. One, especially poignant, bowled me over. This was not the death of the little TB case, admirably handled though it was. It was the moment when Jimmy, the gang leader, while being upbraided, takes a sheet of paper and a pencil and, in a few strokes, makes a lovely sketch. If someone takes an interest in him, flatters him with a few compliments, he might become a great artist. If he is treated roughly, he will surely become a criminal… The agonizing question of vocation is raised here. And a detail like this honors and illuminates a film.
This film is marvelously interpreted by the boys, headed by Frankie Darrow as Jimmy, very well by Madge Evans and James Cagney as the nurse and the inspector, and with great sensitivity by Arthur Byron as the kindly judge.

La Porte des rêves [The Door of Dreams]
(The Keyhole)
The Keyhole tells the story of the beautiful Anne, wife of Maurice, her former partner in a dance act. Believing herself divorced, she has married a rich older man, Schuyler Brooks. But the divorce was not finalized. Maurice takes advantage of the situation, blackmailing his ex-wife by threatening to reveal the truth. He makes her meet with him, extorts large sums, tears her jewels from her.
Terrified, Anne asks her own sister-in-law for help. Maurice must be gotten out of New York. He is a foreigner; they will arrange that his return visa be refused. Anne claims she is going to Cuba. Maurice will follow her there and she will be rid of him.
Brooks thinks she is traveling because she is weary of her luxurious but dull conjugal existence and seeks an adventure. He hires a handsome private detective, Davis, to seduce her and become her lover. When he has done so, he is to telephone the husband, who will fly to Cuba and take the couple in flagrante. But Anne falls truly in love with the detective, and he falls in love with her. He saves her from an ambush arranged by Maurice. When Brooks, alerted by his sister, arrives to take Anne back, the ex-husband flees, falls off a balcony, and is killed. Brooks opens the door. Anne is in Davis’s arms, passionately kissing him. The jealous husband has gotten what he paid for…
Of course, any plot summary is derisive for a film of this type, whose worth lies in its dramatic sweep and the talent of its interpreters. The action is here only to serve the actors and give a pretext for ingenious images, marvelously coordinated. There is no question of psychology. In any event, to disarm criticism, the actors in The Keyhole make the heroine a former dancer, accustomed to a certain liberty and who may thus, over the course of a cruise, swayed by sweet music, the sea, and the starry sky, let herself be beguiled by a mere detective, private though he be.
But what delighted me and must be set apart is, in the role of Dot, a little blonde tart, the charming Glenda Farrell. We have already seen her in certain supporting roles where she struck us by her intelligence and acuteness of observation. Glenda Farrell belongs to that small number of actresses who produce true literary creations, through the amused tenderness with which they realize a character who would be, with another, insignificant and purposeless. She was from head to toe the cruise ship charmer who shares her takings with the barman, chooses lonely and naïve men, and drops them when she sees that the game is not worth the candle. More and more, talking pictures will use and showcase talents of this sort. And it is among them that directors must seek future stars, rather than among the immobile beauties, vamps or victims, inherited from the late silent cinema.
Such a reproach is not addressed to Kay Francis, who has magnetism and authority and, above all, that invaluable advantage for a cinema artist: a ravishing and sensitive shape to the mouth. I do not have the space here to develop this argument, but the mouth is of capital importance in film—more so even than the eyes—and not for the final kiss alone. Smile, emotion, irony, fear, radiant youth and sudden aging, it expresses everything. Take, for example, in France, the mouth of Gaby Morlay and, in America, that of Irene Dunne. If so many actresses disappoint us with their monotony, it is above all because nature has refused them this power of expression.
Henry Kolker has naturalness and ease. He establishes the character of a deceived husband and saves it from convention. Finally, the rhythm of the film is excellent and its technique fully mastered, meaning that it does not intrude and serves the story without overwhelming it.

A/N: This is my first fic written on Tumblr (I usually write through wattpad with my OCs) so please bear with me and if there’s anything you think I could improve on please do not hesitate to tell me <3
CHAPTER ONE
The day you received the email that would change your life forever was like any other. You had woken up at seven, needing to walk your dog, Rex, and started working straight away. You needed to edit a piece you had left unfinished and needed to meet the artist's deadline (you had been trying a freelance piece of work where artists could contact you if they wanted you to produce their work) which would take you the whole morning. By half-past one, you had only just finished; you had to cancel lunch plans with your sister in Myeong-Dong for the second time that week.
You had remembered to eat at about half four because you were just about to start recording, resulting in you heating up half a packet of ramen noodles and leaving them forgotten on the side. It was about half-past ten when you finally finished editing your work, scheduling the upload to go live at midnight. Just as you were about to log off, your email notification sounded. Curious about who would be contacting you at this time, you furrowed your eyebrows and clicked on it.
The name listed wasn’t one you recognised but, your curiosity persisted and you opened it anyway.
Dear Miss Y/N Y/LN,
I am writing to contact you regarding your work as a music producer. My employees and I have been greatly impressed by the quality of your work, your talent cannot be found everywhere. I am the CEO of the BigHit Entertainment Company, we currently manage Bangtan Sonyeondan - or BTS - and are in the process of producing another trainee group.
We would be interested in meeting to discuss a job opportunity for you. We would like to offer you the position of lead producer and songwriter for BTS. Our previous producers will be focused on preparing on the new group’s debut and we want someone of your ability to have BTS as their priority. You would be working alongside them to write their material and produce it ready for release. This will be decided after a week-long trial, the decision will be determined with input from myself and the group members - they should be comfortable with someone who they are working closely with.
Please reply to this email with your response, if you would like to take the opportunity we will set up a meeting soon with myself and Kim Namjoon as the group’s representative.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Bang Si-Hyuk
You blinked at the screen. Then again. As though they were moving of their own accord, your fingers were rapidly typing out a response telling Bang Si-Hyuk that you would be delighted to meet with himself and Kim Namjoon to discuss the opportunity. You pressed send with a triumphant smile on your face. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. You had heard of BTS and listened to some of their music, you enjoyed it and found that their music resonated with you. It was one thing to be producing and performing your own music for a couple of million followers but, to produce music for one of the biggest bands in the continent. This was everything.
The response was almost instantaneous. He expressed his happiness that she would be meeting with them and listed the address of the BigHit building where the meeting would take place. You didn’t bother to contain the excited squeal that came out your mouth, slamming the laptop shut and jumping to your feet. For a second, you just stood there. Then, you screamed quietly - not wanting to wake the neighbouring apartments - and bounced around the room, dancing from foot to foot and spinning around in circles happily.
Eventually, you calmed down and managed to fall asleep but, the grin was permanently imprinted onto your face. The next morning, you woke up with the same bounce in your step, staring at the clock as though that would make the time go any faster. You were dressed in a matching beige blazer and pencil skirt set with a large tote bag containing your tablet, it had all of your best material in case they wanted to listen to some of it.
The reception area was covered in white tiles and had glass walls, the receptionist smiled at you welcomingly. “Hi, welcome to BigHit Entertainment. How can I help you?” Her voice was sweet and she had kind eyes which were behind large, black-framed glasses.
You smiled nervously, you folded your hands other each other tightly to hide the trembling that had started. What if you messed up the meeting? What if Namjoon didn’t like you or your work and didn’t give you the job? So many things could go wrong. Instead of vocalising your jittery thoughts, you said, “Hi, my name is Y/N Y/LN. I have a meeting with Bang Si-Hyuk and Kim Namjoon?” You phrased the last sentence as a question, showing a hint of how unsure of yourself you were.
The receptionist looked down at her computer screen, searching from the system for the list of visitors. She smiled before leaning down and grabbing a visitor’s pass, “Here you go,” she said, sliding it across the desk, “Take the elevator on the left and go to the twenty-third floor. PD-nim’s secretary will direct you from there.” You nodded your thanks, gripping the visitor’s badge tightly between your fingers as you hurried over to the elevator, pressing the up arrow several times.
You spent the entire journey to the twenty-third floor bouncing on the balls of your feet, eventually pinning the badge above the pocket of your blazer. As the elevator doors began to crack open you tried to get rid of the non-existent wrinkles in your clothes and tried to brush away the dust - which wasn’t there. Immediately, you spotted a large office at the bottom of the corridor and headed towards it, assuming that the secretary would be nearby. You were right, she was sat behind a desk similar to the one the receptionist had been behind and looked up as you approached.
“Hi,” you said, smiling at her brightly, “I have a meeting Bang Si-Hyuk and Kim Namjoon at half-past two.” The secretary returned your smile, looking down to her computer and nodded, pointing to the large set of double doors to your left. “Thank you.” You hurried over to them, breathing deeply before knocking.
A deep voice came from inside of the office, “Come in.” You pushed the office door open, a shaky smile on your face as your eyes met that of Bang Si-Hyuk sat at his desk. “Hello Y/N,” he said, rising from his seat, “It is so lovely to meet you.” He gestured to the man sat opposite him, “This is Kim Namjoon, the leader of BTS.”
Namjoon smiled at you, dimples appearing in his cheeks as he bowed at you slightly, “Hello Y/N, it’s nice to meet you.” The smile on his face was encouraging, as though he knew how nerve-wracking this meeting would be for you.
You bowed deeply at the waist towards both men, rising after with the nervous smile still on your face, “Mr Kim, Mr Bang. It’s an honour to be here.” Surprisingly, the latter only laughed, an amused yet kind smile on his face.
“Please, just call me PD-nim.” He gestured towards the seat beside Namjoon and you hesitantly took it, allowing the others to sit back down as well. You placed your tote bag awkwardly on your lap, glancing around the large office nervously.
From her left, Namjoon leaned over, “Please, just call me Namjoon.” You nodded hesitantly, giving him a shaky smile before looking back over to PD-nim.
“So, we’re holding this meeting to discuss the opening we have for lead producer and songwriter,” he looked over to you, “You have accepted the position on a trial basis to ensure the job is right for you and you work well with the group,” he moved his eyes to Namjoon, “Is there anything you would like to say?”
Namjoon nodded, clasping his hands together thoughtfully as his eyes flickered between the two, “Before we go any further, I would like to hear some of your work. I, personally, haven’t heard any of it before and I’d like to be familiar with your style.” Frantically, you nodded your head and you moved your tote bag to the ground and opened the zip.
As you pulled out the tablet you looked up, an excited twinkle in your eye that hadn’t been there before, “I compiled some of - what I think is - some of my best work,” you turned to Namjoon to further explain whilst the files loaded up, “I studied Music Production at university and I’ve been writing, producing and performing all of my own material and uploading it for digital streaming.” He nodded to show his understanding as you pulled up the first song you wanted to show. “This is ‘Crocodile Tears’, this is from about six months ago.”
Holding your breath, you clicked play. The familiar, prominent bass came from the tablet speaker - which was now propped onto the desk - and you almost grimaced when the first verse started. The words flowed from your mouth like honey, pausing halfway through when a sarcastic laugh could be heard. From then the speed picked up and the backing vocals that had been there before were replaced by a quite harsh synth sound.
As the closing words were spoken, you tugged your lip into your mouth and chewed on it nervously. The song had never sounded worse to you before. This was one of your best works - at least, you thought it had been. You looked over to Namjoon who appeared to be deep in thought. He glanced over to you, “Is that you rapping?”
You nodded hesitantly, your fingers finding a loose thread in your skirt to fiddle with. Namjoon whistled lowly, looking back over to the song file and flicking through your material before coming back to the first one. He pulled up the data for it, seeing exactly how you had produced it. “And the backing vocals?” You nodded again and he let out another impressed noise. He looked back over at you, noticing how uncomfortable you appeared in the formal clothing, “You can wear whatever you like when we’re working just so you know.”
Not quite realising what he was saying, you gave him a toothy grin and laughed as though he was telling you a joke. Then, you froze, staring at him in shock. “Wait,” you spluttered, gesturing with your right hand towards him, “You want to work with me?”
Namjoon nodded slowly, giving you a reassuring smile, “I haven’t heard anything like that before,” noticing the slight distress on your face, he added, “In a good way! It’s refreshing and unique. It’s almost retro but, I get a bit of trap-style - it’s hard for me to put my finger on it...” His voice trailed off as his thought process came to an end. He looked back over to the CEO, grinning at him excitedly, “When do we start?”
Bang Si-Hyuk returned his smile, clapping his hands together triumphantly, “Well, first things first: I’ll get your contract sent through. Then, the trial process can start as soon as possible.”
They both looked at you expectantly and you nodded your head quickly, an excited grin on your face as you practically bounced in the seat, “I can start whenever I’m needed.” Bang Si-Hyuk nodded over to Namjoon who got to his feet, holding his hand out to help you to your feet.
“If you start tomorrow, we can begin with you meeting the other members.”

19 Jun 2019
Evening all. It has been a few weeks since I posted last due to holiday / laziness / other but I am now, as Take That sing, back for good so please sit back and enjoy the latest blog post. Same principle, three more songs to get your teeth into and if you like what you hear then take some time to explore more of each artists’ music!
First up today and a band that I enjoyed greatly during the early 2000′s, The Music. Formed in Leeds in 1999 they enjoyed reasonable success with their three albums that were released before disbanding in order for each band member to explore other musical ventures. I was reminded of one of their songs on a ‘2000 Indie’ playlist I asked my darling Alexa to play for me as I was at home a week or so ago and as soon as this song started my ears pricked up, eyebrows raised and the pathetic exclamatory remark ‘TUUUUUUNE’ was uttered to my very non-plussed cat. Taken from their self titled debut album from 2002, the song I’m sharing was one of the groups four top 20 singles released and I think came to my attention as one of those songs which appeared on the sort of indie/alternative compilation CD’s I used to get purchased for me religiously by people who didn’t really know what to buy me for birthday’s or Christmases. There was normally some absolute dross on there which would’ve struggled to break the top 100 in the charts and would never been seen again but then you’d get some very decent material from bands such as The Music. Other songs to try of theirs are ‘Take The Long Road And Walk It’ and ‘The People’ from their debut album and also ‘Freedom Fighters’ from their 2004 follow up ‘Welcome To The North’. Sadly not around anymore but on their day they came up with some great indie tracks.
The Music - The Truth Is No Words - https://youtu.be/ywsHRKd5YZ8
Secondly today and something a bit left field for you in the form of John Cooper Clarke. I was visiting my Dad a few weeks back and we were talking music, more specifically the albums he owns on vinyl which he has been collecting since his University days. Cooper Clarke came up in conversation and I immediately had the image of a pair of glasses combined with a comedy nose and moustache on a sky blue background with light fluffy clouds, this being the album cover to Cooper Clarke’s 1978 album ‘Disguise In Love’. Up to that point I must admit I had never listened to any of his musical work but have been a fan of his written word every time I have seen him perform. Cooper Clarke became famous in the punk era of the late 1970′s and went onto release a number of albums comprising of Cooper Clarke reading his poetry, often with some form of musical accompaniment. Having arrived back from my visiting my Dad I decided to give Cooper Clarke a listen and some of his work is very honest, some of it is slightly bizarre and some his work, namely the song ‘Twat’ is very amusing indeed! The song that caught my attention was a song which was covered by Arctic Monkeys from their album ‘AM’, ‘I Wanna Be Yours’. I would class the musical works of Cooper Clarke as an acquired taste but you cannot deny the words & vocabulary used don’t stick in your mind and they will have you raising a smile or three. My personal favourite of Cooper Clarke’s work is his attempt at a haiku, which is a 17 syllable verse. ‘To convey one’s mood in seventeen syllables is very diffic.....’

Finally tonight and the very talented singer songwriter from Rathcoole, County Dublin by the name of Dermot Kennedy. I have friends who know about this sort of thing who half introduced me to his music during a visit to see them one evening but I was too busy filling my face with great home made curry and equally lovely German beer. Dermot Kennedy has released a number of singles as well as a couple of superb EP’s, the best of which are contained in his debut album which was released earlier this year. He has been performing for around ten years and made his name through word of mouth after being a relentless busker of his music around Dublin. Having won a talent show in Ireland, which was a big springboard to greater popularity, he started releasing music and self-published his material via Spotify and from there his reputation grew and grew. His style differs between the acoustic empathy of a Ben Howard track, think ‘Keep Your Head Up’, right through to the hip-hop feel that Ed Sheeran brings to some of his music, something along the lines of ‘Drunk’. His most popular song according to Spotify is ‘Power Over Me’ which is a great place to start if listening to his music for the first time. I have also liked ‘Young & Free’ and ‘Boston’, the latter being a song which is a tribute to his time busking over in the USA. The song I’m sharing is a new track which was released last week and will hopefully be included on his upcoming second album to be released later this year. I had him on constant loop at work yesterday and it made me realise one thing, I should really pay a lot more attention to all musical suggestions my friends make............DAMN YOU home made curry!

There we go. Good to be back to posting songs again and plenty of great music to come in a fortnight’s time. Be good, see you in two weeks!

Title: Ballerina
Character: Eunkwang and Minhyuk
Sequel to: Thumbelina
Summary: Another episode in the life of a florist and his tattoo artist neighbor.
---
Ever since that faithful day when his heart stirred at the feel of Minhyuk’s arms catching him, Eunkwang couldn’t help but let his gaze wander to the tattoo shop situated next to his humble flower shop. The florist would shake his head whenever he caught himself trying to see what the tattoo artist was trying to do in his dingy shop. Still, Eunkwang would continue glancing in between his work hours.
That was another thing the florist added to the few things he hated or at least, disliked. The man’s act of “heroism” during the bug incident did merit Minhyuk some points but the aftermath quickly erased that. It annoyed him greatly that he became even more curious of the tattoo artist.
Eunkwang quickly snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the bell on his door ring, signaling a new customer. His welcoming smile quickly formed on his lips at the sight of a returning customer.
“Hi, are you getting flowers for your girlfriend again?” Eunkwang greeted but the customer shook his head.
“No,” he smiled. “I’m getting for my mom this time. No special occasion though. I just wanted to give her flowers. Do you have anything you can recommend?”
Eunkwang thought hard about it. “Can you tell me some things about her?”
A fond look fell over the customer’s eyes as he thought about his mom. “She’s poised and really polite to other people. She may seem the quiet type of person but she’s always full of surprises,”
“I have the perfect bouquet in mind. Please wait a moment,”
The florist quickly went around his shop as he picked out flowers for the arrangement. Once he was done, Eunkwang proudly handed the bouquet which was primarily built around the flower Alstroemeria.
“The Alstroemeria basically represents the personality of your mom. I added other flowers too to highlight the Alstroemeria,”
The customer beamed when he reached for the bouquet. “It does look somehow like my mom’s personality,” he chuckled.
Eunkwang waved as the customer left, a light feeling in his heart once again.
The day continued on. Once in a while, he’d look towards the dark shop beside his. Even when he was starting to close his shop for the day, he thought about his neighboring worker. Eunkwang wondered if he’d been too harsh on the tattoo artist. After the incident, he started rethink all the good deeds that Minhyuk was trying to do. Maybe he really was being a nice guy.
‘Maybe I judged him too much because he’s practically the opposite of me,’ Eunkwang thought. ‘His shop is too dim and dark while mine radiates and is open for everyone to see what’s inside. His music preference is too loud for my ears as compared to mine which soothes the soul. He’s too friendly to everyone and he’s not afraid to open conversations with strangers while I find it difficult to interact with just anyone,’
His train of thought was cut off when Eunkwang passed by his shop. The door was open enough for Minhyuk’s loud music to blast through and for Eunkwang to be able to see inside. Annoyance was starting to build up inside the florist the longer he stood there. Once again, the tattoo artist was disturbing the neighborhood with his loud music.
Eunkwang almost rolled his eyes when he heard grunting along with the music. ‘If he was going to do some private sessions, he should close his door and not rely on his loud music to drown out his grunting,’ the florist bitterly thought. Aside from annoyance, there was a bit of jealousy that was bubbling inside him.
Shaking his head, he went on ahead but he still took a peek inside, curiosity fueling his actions. The sight almost made him laugh as all the negative emotions he felt vanished.
Inside, Minhyuk was dancing along to the music. It was a funny sight to watch because it looked like he was just waving his body along with the beat. His grunts seemed to be like low humming instead.
For the first time since their paths crossed, Eunkwang smiled at Minhyuk.
Since then, Eunkwang would be softly chuckling whenever he sees Minhyuk. It confused the tattoo artist greatly but to be honest, he preferred seeing Eunkwang laughing at him instead of his eyebrows furrowing and eyes filling with annoyance. It made the tattoo artist smile as he thought that maybe this was a start for them.
“Good morning,” Minhyuk smiled at Eunkwang as he walked by his flower shop. The florist was carrying a sack of fertilizer and it seemed like he was having a hard time. Of course, Minhyuk immediately volunteered himself and immediately helped carry the sack. The tattoo artist was expecting Eunkwang to brush him off. Instead, all he heard was a stifled laugh.
Eunkwang wanted to tell him off but the image of Minhyuk dancing around stopped him. It took all of his effort to not laugh and drop the sack. The look on Minhyuk’s face made it harder. He appeared so confused but he didn’t look annoyed at all.
“Okay, Thumbelina,” Minhyuk chuckled as he shifted his weight to just one foot. “You’re been laughing at me for almost a week now. What is it?”
The nickname usually threw the florist off but this time, it made him feel happy that it was a name reserved just for him. His heart stirred once again, just like that time when he fell into his arms.
“N-Nothing,” Eunkwang huffed, trying to go back to his previous attitude.
Minhyuk rolled his eyes at the other man’s pretense. “Come on, let’s get this inside your shop,”
“It’s fine, I can do it,” he gently said, unlike in their previous exchanges when he would snap at the artist. It surprised both of them but they kept it to themselves. It was a welcomed change for both the two males.
Eunkwang gestured Minhyuk towards the backdoor that led to the storage.
“I’ll take it,” Minhyuk didn’t offer any room for argument as he shifted all the weight of the sack towards him.
Eunkwang was too surprised to argue. He was in awe that it was possible to do something like that. The florist almost blushed when he realized that he was thinking of how manly Minhyuk is. He shook his head as he let Minhyuk bring the fertilizer while he opened the radio to the local station.
He almost choked on air when the station suddenly played the song Minhyuk was dancing to. Eunkwang forgot that today’s radio program was pop and dance.
“Oh no,” he softly laughed as the image on Minhyuk dancing popped in his mind again. It didn’t help that the said man suddenly appeared in front of him. Not able to take it anymore, the florist finally laughed his heart out.
It took a while but Minhyuk finally realized what was happening. He was dumbfounded but at the same time, he was amused.
“You…,” he shook his head, “You saw me dancing.” It wasn’t even a question anymore and his suspicions were confirmed when the florist laughed harder.
“You’re not as graceful but maybe I should call you Ballerina now,” Eunkwang snickered as he looked at the man in front of him.
Minhyuk couldn’t help but smile brightly as he shook his head while repeating the word ‘ballerina’. It was against his image but if Eunkwang gave him that nickname, who was he to argue? The artist believed that the nickname was a step forward into this friendship or maybe something more in the future.
On the other hand, Eunkwang had to stop laughing because he was taken aback by the smile Minhyuk showed. His heart raced once again. He pursed his lips as he just stared at Minhyuk. There, he started seeing the tiny details in his face.
‘Maybe he’s not so bad after all,’ Eunkwang thought.

An Exploration through My Inspirations: Influenced by Art in Various Forms (Content#1)
INSPIRE
CREATIVE
OUT-OF-THE-BOX
These are the three words that I breathe and live by. These are the words that I want my readers (you) to know me by. I want these three adjectives to be attached to who I am as person and as a brand. I want you to read those three words together and think of one name... Meryll.
Okay, okay I think we need to stop right there. I was starting to sound like Narcissus. Well, let me start by saying, Welcome to my blog! I know this sounds like a “typical” blogger so far but bear with me (I just wanted to do some formalities). First, I want to introduce myself. My name is Meryll Gabionza and I am an art and an artist. Okay, I know what you are thinking. an artist? So, you mean you paint right? or you create art projects? Well... let us just say, I kind of do but I technically do not. I know it is confusing, but I will explain it more for you. I consider myself as an artist because not just because I create art, and I am inspired by art, it is because I believe that art resonates in my blood and in my soul. I want to produce meaningful pieces that are meaningful and truly reflect my views and personality.
Like what you have read in the title of this article, this will be an “Exploration through my Inspirations”. I will walk you through some great works, and artist that greatly influence my life and aspirations.
LIFE IMITATES ART
Have you ever heard of the saying, Life Imitates Arts?
Tumblr media
Well, I first heard this quote from a Lana Del Rey’s song, Gods and Monsters. This quote was inspired from one of the most well-known poet and playwright of his time, Oscar Wilde. It was derived from his essay, The Decay of Lying that was published in 1889 and was included in his essay collection entitled, Intentions.  In the essay, there were two main characters debating about their opinions and theories about art. It reflected Wilde’s own bias between Romanticism over Idealism. One of the characters in the story, his name was Vivian argued that “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life”. He also stated that, “Life holds up a mirror to Arts”, he meant that people create art to mimic the dreams or fantasies they wanted to live by. They envision this “Life” that they create by using art as an inspiration. This piece of statement spoke to my heart in a different way and thinking of it further it is true. We make these visions for ourselves to satisfy a certain goal, or our endless needs.
THE MASTERFUL THEIF OF CINEMA
Tumblr media
Let me start this topic by asking question, what is the difference between creating homages from stealing?
Well, Tarantino was asked about this a lot. His movies are littered by “stolen” scenes from different films which he had re-created to match the story and scene for his movie. These scenes are apparent or in better term, ‘in-to-your face’, especially if you are familiar with some of these historical pieces. So, how does one determine if someone is copying or if some one is just creating visual reference from a classic?
I have watched this insightful video created by the media outlet, Business Insider. In the video, they discussed how Tarantino does it so masterfully. In a 1994 interview with Empire Magazine, he quoted that “Great artist steals, they don’t do homages”. This resembles another great artist saying, “Good artists copy, great artist steals”, his goes by the name Pablo Picasso. He also admitted in the same interview that he steals from every single movie ever made.

Tarantino uses this technique called Pastiche, it is where artists mimic or imitate another artist’s work, the artist themselves, or a certain type of movement. The word Pastiche based on the Italian word pasticcio which means to ‘paste’. The purpose of this is give homages to famous and/or controversial works, artists, or movements.  This technique was an important part of the Post-Modernism movement, where Tarantino takes a huge part in. In this movement, they believe that ‘Art are Recycled’. They pay tribute to a certain genre or movement that they are greatly inspired on and stitches it into a new masterpiece.
The usage of these visual references throughout his films became his trademark. All his films are inspired by a particular movie or movement. Tarantino was not taught to make films from a professional setting, he learned everything by binging on a lot of movies. So, there is no denial that he truly understood the source of his materials and pays respect on them a lot.
GRAFFITIS & CONTROVERSIES – THE ART OF BANKSY
Tumblr media

Who is Banksy?
That is the question of a lot of people who have followed or have had seen his works. Well, he is a famous anonymous artist from England. He is a graffiti artist, a filmmaker, and a political activist. He is known for his massive street art pieces painted on the street of Britain. Banksy’s works provokes and sparks a huge interest and controversies by creating taboo subjects that give awareness or trigger people’s beliefs and opinions.
He is known to use stencils to create his artworks, probably it is faster so he can protect his identity (which is an important part of Banksy). He is greatly influenced by a fellow European and street artist, Blek de Rat.

One of his well-known work is an art exhibition built in Somerset, England. It was called ‘Dismaland’, it is a dystopian theme park that mocks the famous theme parks. Instead of being amused, the goal of the pop-up is to ‘be-amuse’ the visitors. The imagery shown in the park are rather depressing and off-putting than the ‘Magical’ moments people feel whenever they are in a traditional theme park.
---
Well, these are just some of the people and works I get my inspirations from. Like you can tell by now, I idolize people who are also greatly influenced by artist who made impacts on their lives. We can use these works to create new pieces that represents you and your idealisms.

10 Anthems From System, Hamburg's Notorious Early- '90s Techno Temple-- Telekom Electronic Pounds
Tumblr media
When the initial Device club opened in Hamburg in 1989, it was actually embraced as a choice to various other places that worked on tighter time limits and also frequented much less main sites. Unlike Face, the pioneering nightclub that introduced property popular music to Germany-- and also probably multinational dancing floorings--, the 1st Unit at Talstrasse corrected at the center of some of among Europe's most significant amusement places, notorious red illumination area around Reeperbahn, and also as a result of this its own parties can last much longer.
At initially, the popular music at Unit was no different to what was actually participated in somewhere else around town-- a common post-acid residence boom mix. Soon however, the resident DJs like Gary D, Tobias Lampe and also Holly, and guide nationwide and also international guest DJs, switched towards techno and later hypnotic trance, as well as Unit became a leading lighting in developing and pressing these noises more along with various other nationwide pillars in Berlin and also Frankfurt.
The 1st System room needed to approach 1994 as a result of improved criminal activity in the area, yet it resumed the very same year as Unit II in a brief area likewise near to Reeperbahn, prior to System III resolved in an outdated manufacturing facility area in one more area. As the club increased much bigger in size and aspiration, the groups performed certainly not observe match, and Unit shut for really good in 1999. Our experts inquired DJ Tobias Lampe for a checklist of reports that made the very first System manifestation and also his and Henry's residency, phoned Pure Power, such an enduring mind.
A Homeboy, A Hippie & & A Funki Dredd, "Complete Complication (Heavenly Mix)" (Tam Tam Records 1990)
"This is one of the early anthems at the nightclub, which I think was actually additionally presently greatly played due to the initial Unit DJs Pari D and Dual UMF. The very early years were really quite open minded. They participated in a blend of property, hip hop, techno, even downtempo beats and a style contacted hip home. And it represents basically exactly how it was actually functioning in the UK also, this period when no person at the rave possessed tensions regarding having 808 State, Pop, Frankie Bones, Orbital and Guru Josh all on the very same stage."
Foremost Artists, "Extended Attraction Variation (Foresight Model)" (Nu Groove 1990)
"I guess I to begin with heard this magic piece when Boris Dlugosch played it at the Front club. Tough to clarify why, but it surely always made this enchanting, extreme ambience, both at Front and at Pure Electricity on Fridays, where Holly as well as me played this keep track of nearly each week. Few various other tracks may record the feeling of the time therefore strongly-- at that time it was led through residence and also techno songs coming from London, Nyc Metropolitan Area, Chicago and also Detroit. Front nightclub was hugely important, along with the Friday purchasing journey to the Container Records establishment, which imported all the songs directly. As Boris Dlugosch played much less and also much less techno at Face, our company tried to play and work with all factors of it at Pure Power, and also specifically techno from Detroit."
Psychological Trouble, "Joey's Riot" (Ambience Records 1990)
"Especially in The Big Apple Area, designates like Nu Gouge as well as others were actually launching music that appeared like each home as well as techno. Our experts commemorated specifically these hybrid appears and also in knowledge this might possess been what Hamburg was constantly approximately. Regularly open-minded as well as somehow in between. Our team were actually obviously trying all kinds of noises at that time. We participated in pretty tough thumping techno and also very early hypnotic trance, however at the primary of what we participated in was always what our company phoned tech-house. This prime goose bump example of the tech-house noise our company loved was actually produced by Joey Beltram, that for our team was actually one of the leading Nyc producers in this field."
Format, "Solid Treatment" (ESP Records 1991)
"This Orlando Voorn one was a what we called a Voll-Brett. Brett indicates plank, it's a term utilized for especially reliable flooring fillers-- we embraced this language from the Frankfurt setting. It's a certain shot that consistently contents skins in the nightclub. It was actually one of the noticeable anthems, at the very least for our nights."
The Hypnotherapist, "Pioneers Of The Warped Canal" (Increasing Higher 1991)
"We managed bus journeys from Hamburg to the first Mayday event and Love Parades. I still remember our experts invested 3 times preparing up the 1st Breather The Limitations Go Crazy at Kasematten/Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, and after our company were actually performed partying, we removed whatever and then moved towards Berlin for Mayday in a bus packed with Hamburg ravers.
Henry and also I were actually therefore run through that our experts must cancel our Pure Power gig there, as well as instead our company partied on as most effectively as our experts still could. And then, eventually, The Hypnotist jumped on phase, and they threw hundreds of green radiance sticks into the crowd. The lightings and also fog carried out the remainder.
The surroundings at Halle Weissensee was actually magical, and then the songs began. It simply blew me away how a lot of music effects they might combine. Trance was actually certainly not a musical condition for our company then, yet if you use it to a mood The Therapist probably was the act that toenailed it down best, particularly at that job. Obviously, our team could not help it, and really felt need to celebrate these keep tracks of at System, preferably from 4 a.m. onwards."
Ramirez, "Los Angeles Musika Tremenda (La Tormenta Mix)" (DFC 1991)
"Ramirez created a minimum of pair of masterpieces of very early tech-trance (which is what we eventually called this type), as well as this is one of them. I carry out not understand just how to define it exactly, yet the monitor had this subliminal dirty contact, as well as when I hear it, I am going to permanently consider sweat-drenched ravers, trembling blinking light, solid smog and the experience of strolling out into vast daytime after partying. This keep track of was always the one to activate the final reserves."
Golden Girls, "Dynamic (Frank De Wulf Remix)" (R&S Records 1992)
"In this listing, I am actually also making an effort to show how a considerable amount of different scenes and circles from various components of the planet produced this magical universe of sound our team enjoyed back then. This is actually a perfect example of the effect of the Belgian audio. I still think that Belgian as well as Dutch songs's influence has regularly been actually under rated. This was a significant and also surefire sausage at Unit."
Vainqueur, "Lyot (Maurizio Mix)" (Maurizio 1992)
"This keep track of is actually characteristic of the impacts of Berlin and also Detroit to our noise. The Berlin/Detroit axis remained in early progress during that time, and also our company took trips to Berlin to discover this noise at Hard Wax as well as Ecstasy. We partied to it at Tresor, Teknozid as well as Earth, however also at Hamburg's Front nightclub, before the first Unit opened up. For us, Basic Stations's discography offered the first major releases coming from Berlin, even in relations to techno. I think we additionally believed Maurizio was actually a person from Detroit. The minimalistic, dubbed out as well as darker parts of techno, tinted with some references to EBM, played a significant role at Device. Actually my very first night at System got on a Wednesday as well as it was actually called Tekkno Nightclub, with 2 k, of training program. It was actually even more devoted to EBM, Dark Surge as well as Acid, as well as then it opened to the impacts from over the garden pond, UK, Berlin as well as Frankfurt."
Vapourspace, "Gravitational Arch Of 10" (Plus 8 Records 1993)
"I may not remember where I initially heard this, however I keep in mind just how surprised I was. Ever since, I intended to share this feeling, as well as it was actually played at least twice an evening. I likewise remember we experimented with switching out the strike out and also blasting the haze machine prior to the kick drum was available in, and it regularly brought about incredible screams from the dance flooring. Not considerably eventually, Henry and also I marketed the Plus 8 night with Vapourspace stay together with DJ collections by Richie Hawtin as well as John Acquaviva. Our experts were pretty impressed through his analogue reside specified pageants."
Marmion, "Schöneberg" (Superstition 1993)
"Holly and I were actually doing the Pure Electricity night every Friday at System. Our experts threw probably all the pertinent names back then, from Derrick Might to Sven Väth. It was actually such a small act in a handful of German urban areas in those days that our team all felt a little like loved ones. Early buddies from our go crazy trips to Berlin, Frankfurt as well as Munich were actually, for instance, Mijk vehicle Dijk and also Marcos Lopez, that provided me this Berlin development as a demo a few times after a job at Unit. This EP and also track actually turned into one of the breakthroughs of Fear Recordings, the label I just had established three launches back. Specifically this fourth release gained the label as well as both manufacturers a significant international following. And the keep track of is what I phone a perfect mix of residence as well as techno components; it's a real techno house standard."

Differences Make the Difference
A person who entertains is marked with stigma throughout his whole life, yet those who persevere consider it on of the greatest achievements in their life. Entertainment is one of the hardest professions to succeed at because not all audiences have the same interest and taste when it comes to for example, movies or T.V.-shows, music, and different forms of performances.  It requires a special type of person to be able to entertain its viewers because the challenge for an entertainer is to create mutually relatable experiences applicable to all audiences. One must be able to think quickly on his or her feet, and must be creative and unique to the form of entertainment he or she is performing, one must also have composure when performing in front of a large audience. More importantly however is how one achieves his or her reputation in the industry in order to achieve a wide audience. All entertainers have experienced the same form of struggle when it comes to being known in the industry. Most have experienced failures and rejection prior to being famous, and even when they have made a name, entertainers still experience detest of the opposing audience.
Tumblr media

A type of entertainment that demands such characteristics from the entertainer is no doubt the job of a stand-up comedian. Anyone can be a stand-up comedian, but few are known due to the skill set and demands of the industry. Different comedians have different styles of comedy to entertain or amuse an audience. One comparison to elaborate these differences is between the comedic styles of Bo Burnham and Kevin Hart in the aim to show that one can still entertain no matter the style of comedy (specifically by being either socially engaged or not) being used. It is important to note these similarities and differences to show that one can still succeed despite being unique and different from societal and industry norms.
The first to be elaborated is on Bo Burnham’s use of creativity to entertain his audience. His means of presenting his comedy is unique to him as is his style. First is that his method makes use of songs and music, and different portrayals and actions that one may relate to, (evident in his 2016 show “Make Happy”) as a medium to present his piece. Second is that his style is unique to himself as it does not follow the norm of stand-up comedy, where usually comedians (i.e. Kevin Hart, “Fluffy” Iglesias, and Joseph Glenn Herbert) use experiences as a medium of entertainment to amuse their audiences. Burnham throws in the usual lessons he gains from his life, but mixes it with different issues that affect society. The central theme for most of his shows such as “Words, Words, Words” and “Make Happy” are usually overlooked “first world problems” such as love, “white problems”, suicide, culture, manipulation, and ironies. One example is when Burnham made a reference to how different entertainers lie and manipulate their audiences, and that such act, according to Burnham (2016) was “the end of culture”. The example he presented was about a segment, on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” namely “Celebrity Lip-Syncing” wherein a “rich, young white actress ironically lip-synced to a hip-hop song” and that it was an irony because rich, young white actresses have not experienced the same “class struggle”, as those who produced the song.

The second however, is the more popular, typical type of stand-up comedy, one that does makes use of social constructs, but rather is a composition of stories an audience can relate to. Kevin Hart proves a great example of one that uses the standard convention of comedy to make it big – by making fun of common, relatable, everyday events that all can understand. Some examples of which are evident in Hart’s 2009 show “I’m A Grown Little Man” which includes make believe scenarios such as women always looking to a man for help when faced with disaster or calamity, or when Hart elicits his lack of an ability to face an aggressor who “knocked out” a particular person because of fear of facing the same outcome as him or her.  One talent Hart is unique to is his ability to portray the scenarios as real as he can, making use of his mic, voice, facial expressions, as well as body language, which greatly affects the imagery of the stories he tells.
Despite the differences, both artists have managed to make a name in the industry, with Kevin Hart making a 2017 net worth of $120M, and Bo Burnham coming up at around $3.5M. This proves that the difference between the artists do not matter because they have the ability to amuse and entertain no matter how unique a performance piece is executed. The end objective of these artists therefore is not only to make a name, but to exemplify the overlooked details, may it be socially concerned or not, in an entertaining fashion. No style is better than the other, as long as an entertainer’s end objectives are met.

Everybody Cut Footloose!
Just a little side drabble I thought of while reading @wittyy-name's lovely klance fic "Shut Up And Dance With Me" (there's also art by @wolfpainters which is AMAZING pls go check them out) between Pidge and Anita (my voltron OC). I will use they/them pronouns for Pidge instead of she/her this time, as they're used in SUADWM and other fics of Wittyy's. All credits go to the amazing writer and artist, and go read SUADWM and the other fics bc they're super great!
Edit: this got really long so technically it's not a drabble anymore. Plus it was hard describing dance moves so y'all might have to listen to the song while reading that part rip me
They saw her every Tuesday without fail. Every Tuesday Pidge would see the same girl at the park during the weekly dance meets with Hunk and Lance, always watching in amusement as they danced. By now they could spot her in the circle of people instantly; standing around 5'4" with medium length raven hair, dual-colored eyes---the left dark blue and the right green---and light tan skin, her left arm tattooed with a sleeve of pink cherry blossoms. They couldn't miss her, and they couldn't deny that she was cute, too. Whenever Pidge caught sight of the girl, she was cheering and clapping along with the rest of the crowd as they, Hunk, and Lance switched in and out of the dance circle, however she always seemed to cheer the loudest for Pidge, boosting their confidence greatly.
However, what caught Pidge's eye a few times was that the girl looked anxious to dance in the circle like other people did at times. She takes a small step forward, only to pull back and stay where she is, resorting to dancing shyly with the crowd. What she needed was a little push of encouragement, and Pidge decided that they would be the one to give it---and maybe get to know her better.
Tuesday rolled around again, and Pidge, Hunk, and Lance set up the speaker and donations bucket per usual. As Lance and Hunk talked amongst each other, Pidge looked around to see if that girl was here yet. And sure enough, they found her standing a couple yards away under one of the park's trees, fiddling with her phone. She wore an orange short-sleeved shirt with the shoulders cut out that hung loosely around her torso, dark grey leggings, and teal high-top Converse.
Pidge excused themselves as they made their way toward her, an excited grin forming all the while. Don't be awkward. Don't be awkward. Don't be awkward, echoed their thoughts. They saw the girl look up from her phone and at them, smile widely, and wave. Pidge happily waved back. "H-Hey!" they stuttered with a voice crack, mentally kicking themselves afterwards. Great first impression, Pidge. They stopped in front of the girl, ears burning, and oh god she was cuter up close. Upon observation, Pidge noticed that the breast pocket of the girl's shirt had a little green alien with its middle fingers up peeking out from the top. Cute.
"Hey," they said again.
"Hey," the girl repeated brightly. Her voice was smooth and nice to listen to. "I didn't think I'd finally get to personally meet one of the park's legendary dancers." Pidge laughed at the girl's spunky tone and rubbed the back of their neck sheepishly. "Well, here I am, haha. I'm Pidge, by the way." Pidge pointed to Hunk and Lance. "The lanky one's Lance and the big guy's Hunk. We all go to the same dance studio."
"Anita. You guys go to the Altea dance studio, right?"
"Yeah. We're all practicing for regionals auditions there, actually. Hunk and I are doing a duo dance."
A thick blanket of awkward silence passed over the two then, both not knowing what to say next. Thankfully, Anita saved the day. "I, uh, I like your shirt," she said, gesturing to Pidge's "Non-Binary Day" t-shirt. "Huh? Oh, thanks! Lance got it for me. I got him one that says "Gettin' Bi" in return. I like yours, too. That alien represents 90% of my day." Anita giggled before thanking them. The heat from Pidge's ears spread to their cheeks. They were starting to believe that whole 'love at first sight' shtick.
"S-So I've noticed," they then said, "that whenever you're here, you always look like you wanna step in and dance at some point. But then you always go back." Anita looked surprised at first; they found out so quickly. Now it was her turn to rub her neck. "Cat's out of the bag, huh?" she replied with a nervous chuckle. "If I'm being honest, I don't think I'm that good, not as good as you three, at least. Dancing isn't really my forte...."
"Oh no, don't go starting that with me," Pidge said, mocking Shiro's 'stern dad voice'. "I'm sure you can dance at least a little. Why don't you show us? Just me, Lance, and Hunk." Pidge saw Anita's face light up. "For real?" she asked. "O-Okay!"
Anita followed Pidge to where Lance and Hunk were. After she was introduced, Anita went to plug in her phone to the speaker and picked a song from her playlist. She then stood a good length away from the three dancers and waited. Once the music played, Anita tapped her foot in time with the beginning beats. Pidge immediately realized that Anita's pick was Kenny Loggins' Footloose.
As more instruments came in, Anita's foot tapping switched to swift hip movements and light bouncing. It continued like this until the lyrics were heard, to which then Anita added arm movements, steps, and small kicks to the jerks of her hips. Once the beat dropped and the lyric "Now I gotta cut loose, Footloose" sounded, all of Anita's moves increased tenfold. She jumped, kicked, nodded her head, shook her hips, and swung her arms in time with the music perfectly and smoothly.
Throughout the song, Pidge saw that Anita's dancing had a certain vibe to it. It wasn't as strictly choreographed like Lance, or as well calculated like them or Hunk. It was carefree and out there while still hitting every beat just right. Anita was letting loose with a smile on her face, feeling as if she was dancing on air rather than the hard ground.
Oh man, Pidge was falling for her more, and they were falling fast.
As the song came to end, Anita cried the last lyric, "Everybody cut Footloose!", hit the last five beats, and finished with her arms spread next to her in a star pose. It was then silent, but it was followed by Pidge, Hunk, and Lance clapping for her. Onlookers who gathered were applauding as well. Anita saw Pidge clapping the loudest, however, like she did when they danced, which made her smile.
The clapping ceased and Anita made room for Hunk to dance next. She went over to Pidge, who had an obviously proud grin on their face, and sat next to them. "And you said dancing wasn't your forte," was the first thing they said. Anita rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You proved me wrong, Pidge. How did I do, though?"
"I think you did great. It was....nice watching you dance so freely."
Anita felt her cheeks heat up at that. "Th-Thank you." She paused for a moment watching Lance join Hunk in the dance circle. "H-Hey, Pidge, do you....wanna go out with me sometime?" Pidge felt their stomach do backflips just then. Did they hear correctly? Was this actually happening?
"Y-You mean, 'out' out? Like, just the two of us? Like a date?"
"Yeah, like a date. I've been meaning to ask ever since I saw you here, but that would've been ridiculous of me. Plus I didn't really want to bother you with it because you'd probably think I'm weird...."
Okay, so this was happening. Pidge was not, in fact, dreaming. This was real. Very, very real.
Pidge was at a loss for words. Anita could clearly see that their face was bright red. "Pidge, you okay?" she asked. Pidge nodded so quickly that they thought their glasses were going to fly off their face. "Y-Y-Yeah, I'm great! A-A date sounds nice! And it's not weird, either! I've....actually wanted to say the same thing to you, but I never had the guts to talk to you. But now that I have, it can be settled!"
Anita smiled brightly at Pidge's answer, immediately pulling them into a hug, to which they almost fainted from the emotional overload.
Later, after everyone went home for the day and Hunk and Lance were gathering their things, Anita and Pidge exchanged numbers. "So...." Anita started, "I'll text you the time and place on Saturday?"
"Sounds good," Pidge replied, still shaken from the moments that had unfolded before. In a sudden act of boldness, they stood on their toes and pecked Anita's cheek. "I'll see you then," they said happily, then running off to Hunk and Lance, leaving Anita frozen in place to process what had just happened.
Anita reached up to touch the spot where Pidge had kissed her. "Holy fuck...." she said to herself. She then turned and walked out of the park, smiling, but screaming internally.

How to Write a Rap Song
Knowing how to write rap songs requires an comprehension of the basics. Each rap song has a beat, hook, and verses, but there are additional factors relevant to writing a rap song. Each song, while it's hip hop rap, R&B, or a different genre, includes a base style or pattern that is common to every song belonging to that genre.
The basic element is the beat. Every rap has a beat. It may vary according to the kind of tune the artist would like to make, and it may be exhausting. Not many raps are angry and filled with violent beats and loud hooks; there are rap songs that are composed to many others along with dance beats that are joyful rather than filled with lyrics and harsh words. Virtually every rap tune has three basic parts - poetry, and the hook or chorus, intro. It is these three components that need to keep in mind when learning how to write a rap song.
There are various ways as to how a rap song may start. Writers try to ascertain which will fit the song the best generally when working on the best way best to compose a rap tune. Raps usually start with an instrumental bit that's followed using a verse or two. But based on the rap artist, the song may start with the hook that then contributes to the instrumental, which can be followed closely with the first verse. Based on the sort of song the artist is currently hoping to compose, the number of the components of verses and arrangement fluctuates.
Some songs have four verses and 32 bars each, although on average rap tunes consist of three, 16-bar verses. It is dependent upon the lyrics and beat of the rap. The verse is the part that has the true lyrics or rap or vocals. This is the part which includes the majority of the lyrics and in which the song's significance is portrayed to the audience. Normally, the various verses in the song are of the same length, but that isn't a requirement. The duration of verses might differ if the beats of the song varies.
Tumblr media
Composing a rap tune demands an understanding of the fundamentals of rap song composing. The demands of writing rap comprise knowledge of rhyming approaches, of original lyrics, and developing. Rap is composed of both rhymed couplets, which are normally set beat and drum. Possessing a good rhyming flow and technique is crucial to writing a rap tune.
Tumblr media
Lyrically, the first step to writing a rap tune is to select a topic that is good. The topic serves as the central subject of the rap song. It could be about just about anything, or pain, love, joy, greed, racism, justice, partying.
The beat is crucial to writing a rap song. Lyricists compose their lyrics into the beat, but others write the lyrics first and then make the track. A rap song cans crack or make. A musician can produce a fantastic bass beat working with an electronic drum loop or bass guitar. It's this bass beat that drives the rap trail along with also the flow. The rapper should keep up with the bass beat.
There is A hook essential to form this rap tune's chorus. Lyrics should be written with the rhyming scheme that was selected and the bass beat. Lyrics are considered the core strength of a rap. Lyrics are the characteristic of rap, making rap songs stand apart from others, even the ones that possess the same instrumental beat.
Writing a rap tune requires structuring after composing the lyrics. This involves incorporating breakdowns or bridges to add depth to the song arrangement and interspersing the verses. Lyrics are listed over bridge, verses, chorus, and the bass beat. The accession of punch lines can be used to bring an extra level providing amusement and humor. Drum fills such as beats of bass and melody lines can be inserted to add depth.
To compose good rap songs, you'll need to customize your rap lyrics and listen to and examine famous rap artists and songs that are popular. An ideal Mix of scheme, word drama punch lines, melody, and bass beats, is going to result in a rap song. Many rappers collaborate to write a last draft rap song and work.
By following some basic writing measures of structure and pattern, writing a rap song, can be achieved. Rap as a genre may seem limited by a set of beats and verses, but there's a lot more that goes into a rap song than those elements. Each rap song has components that are common to all songs, no matter artist or the genre. For instance, each rap has hook a whip, chorus, and verses; it is the arrangement of these components that differs from song to song and artist to artist.
When writing a rap song, the artist will start before writing the lyrics and vocal tracks, with working on the beat. This is because when the defeat is finished, it's typically simpler to write lyrics that than writing the lyrics first and then trying to create. Many raps consist of a monitor and bass line that plays along with the beat. Because the portion of a rap is your track, especially few instrumental parts are required.
These days, however, rap tunes are becoming collaborative and more experimental, and artists collaborate during the process of writing a rap song with other rappers. This leads to a final product that is a blend. Furthermore, it forms a new style and creates the song writing process more manageable and more interesting as every artist has a distinctive perspective.
Along with all the tracks and bass lines, a rap tune samples loops of tracks by artists. Samples coating over the first instrumental tracks to add another dimension to the song. This brings about a blend of two unique Hip Hop Songs genres which collaborate for writing a rap tune that has all of the components of a traditional rap, with the defeat, hook, and poetry in addition to a looped sample track that adds a new layer to the rap song.
Composing a rap tune requires editing and training. In all likelihood, your first draft will probably be mediocre at best. That is nice and will be expected. Just rewrite, reorganize, and rework it until you achieve the desired affect. You might employ a rap author and editor to help turn your rough draft into a finished song.
When you have a couple skills needed to achieve that it is possible to write your own rap tune. The main skill that you will need is a good imagination or thought process. Other abilities include having the ability to concentrate, knowing about rap music and using a great format. To begin with, having an imagination is important when it is time to write your own rap song because you'll need to come up with a few rap legends which people will want to obey.
There are several rap music out there on the market today and it's difficult at times to think of something that's fresh and unique. You need rap lyrics which will stick out from the rest. For this, you want to use your creativity. You don't want to go with the standard rap lyrics that everyone else is using. The more unique and imaginative your rap lyrics are, the greater chance your rap song will probably have of making it. This involves a thought procedure that is good.
Tumblr media
Next, when you compose your own rap tune, you'll need to think your lyrics out and compose them. There are lots of ways in which you'll be able to create a format the best way is to write out every stage of the tune according to the sequence that each phase will appear. Starting with the title, you'd write your own rap tune from begin to finish as if it were an article. Including your chorus and verses. Write each thing as you come to it that you are not overwhelmed.
You should be Knowledgeable about the rap songs in The audio business and the artists that created them. This will enable you to know what songs have been effective and which ones haven't. Break apart the tunes that are well-known and consider what's made them popular use your knowledge to write.
People rappers who pride themselves on writing their own rap songs collaborate with other writers. Whether that means having a rapper compose a verse or even the tune or bouncing ideas, there's nothing wrong with alliance. The ghostwriters are not recognized and the rapper performs with the rap, although most rappers use ghostwriters to write whole albums.
Are you really interested in learning how to write a rap song? Well if this guide should be able to give you a hand and have you writing rap songs in no time flat. As a manufacturer I am familiar with the process of composing rap songs. Because I feel I have some information that others are going to greatly benefit from I chose to discuss it. In this article I will discuss some steps which will help.
You should bear in mind that there are ways which you can go about studying this process. What I am about to share with you are the steps that I use to make rap songs. Use or follow these steps. It is entirely your decision.
Receive a Topic - Get a idea of what your song will be around. At times the mood that you are in will give you a few topic ideas that are great. For example if you're feeling happy and at a party mood you may choose to compose a tune along those lines. Perhaps you are having. This may provide you with a slew of ideas for your rap tune. If you let your mood determine your song topic it would be a matter of time until you have a set subject to write about.
Tumblr media
Brain Storm - This is a role if not the most important part of learning how to compose a rap tune. Brain storming is a great way to get the creative juices flowing. Before I pick up a pen I sometimes sit in my chair for 30-45 minutes. Just let thoughts flow before you start actually writing anything.
Consider A Title - is a great time to think of a title for your tune. This doesn't imply that the name can not change later. Picking on a title will provide you somewhat.
Tumblr media
Write The Chorus/Hook - I personally like to write the chorus of the song before I begin writing the verses. I do so because it actually helps me to determine exactly what the lyrics will be. A good idea is to truly feel the beat out and then write your hook to really match if you're writing to a beat. You should be aware that in case the hook is what makes or breaks a song, so when making yours, take your time.
Write Your Verses - I recommend writing 2-3 verses 3, When it comes to writing a rap song. Each of your 3 verses would normally be, if you're going to use 2 verses they should be somewhat longer then. A verse usually consists of 16 bars (a set of rhyming sentences = I pub). Make sure that you are currently writing them to really fit your chorus when composing your verses. Your fundamental rap tune arrangement goes intro, verse, hook, poetry, hook, verse and hook. Of course you'll be able to change this structure for your liking. Be sure it sounds to outside the normal.
Twist It Up - Now that your song is completely written you need to go over it. You truly ought to make sure that your lyrics make since and that your hook is ideal for the song. Don't wait over your song several times before you promote it or capture it on your own. Learning doesn't have to be tough and hopefully this article hopefully demonstrates that.

A Conversation: Lights
Tumblr media
“Lights Poxleitner-Bokan, known mononymously as Lights, is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, author, and illustrator.“
First and for most, Lights, you’re an artist who loves to reach a broad audience. Pop, electro, punk, you have ties to all these communities. Let’s talk about your punk rock connections to start off. Underground Operations. Ten Second Epic. Protest The Hero. Less Than Jake. Warped Tour. Where did your interest come from? When I was a teen, the music I listened to was mostly pop-punk and post-hardcore. I was in pop punk band then later a metal band and went to Warped every summer. It’s all important to me even now, always will have a special place in my heart!
Let’s talk Toronto. Now you’ve noted Toronto as your musical hometown since it is the place you really started your music career. What are your impressions of the city’s music and artistic community since you’ve been there? It seems like a cultural hub rivaled only by the likes of Montreal, but Toronto is making some noise for sure –Fucked Up, The Weekend, Drake, yourself, just to name a few… Your thoughts on the city? Toronto was a great place to enter into the music world. There are tons of venues, you could do a show every night in a new place. When we first started doing shows back in ’07, we would take transit to shows, and we’d do residencies at free indie-music nights that sometimes served free food to feed the artists and entice people to come. It’s definitely a city geared towards live music more than many other places. And great music does emerge from there, Holy Fuck for example, who put their mark on my record.
While we are on the topic of the big T.O. I noticed since you hit it big, that your fashion/style has also seem to be hitting big yo your young female fans these days. I was curious if these clothing ideas you put together have had as big as impact as you thought they would on the teenage world? Did you know you would become a trend setter? Even growing up, I watched how trends set by artists were imitated and manifested by the public. It amused me greatly! I always knew if you had something small for people to latch on to, to identify you by, it would become a “thing”. When I started wearing a headband a lot I suddenly began seeing it at all the shows, it was crazy! It’s exciting to think about when letting your fashion tastes progress.
I’m not going to ask you much about your childhood…. It’s a well known fact that you moved around a lot and spent time in the Caribbean and Asia and all points in between. I was wondering though the extensive touring you do if you ever feel like a nomad; Is moving around just in your blood and is it something you think you’ll always do? Being raised a missionary kid definitely set me up for this kind of lifestyle. I learned at a young age that happiness is about who you’re with, not where you are or what you have. I learned to not cling to anything solid - it’s the non-tangible that really matters in life. The song “Siberia” touches on this idea.
Now that you are taking the world by storm via tour, How is the tour life been going so far? Most memorable moment or performance? Anything crazy happen? Tour (life) has been amazing! It’s awesome finally getting to play a bunch of new songs, and having enough material to switch up the set each night. It’s awesome seeing the growth everywhere we go.
Lets talk about the album that started all that wonderful success for you; Siberia which came out almost 10 years ago. The album cover looking a little straight forward and ‘straight to business’. Where did the inspiration for Siberia come from? Siberia is a place that’s always been fascinating to me, so distant and unknown. So many mysteries about it! Regardless though, the process of creating this album felt a bit like that for me. What we were creating, the hard, grit contrasting the soft, melodic pop was so new feeling. We were exploring unknown turf, it was a bit scary but totally cool and adventurous. Aside from it also being a song on the album, it just felt like the right title.
Tumblr media
Lastly, there has been something that I have been noticing with your music something while I was listening to your early songs, that seemed to make them different then your newly released songs, of course the lyrics but more specifically, the change of sound. What exactly influenced you to change it up like that? It’s important to let your music catch up with where you are in your life. The things I’ve been listening to are a little grittier, darker, dubstep infused. Also, having toured for a couple years on the first record, you get a sense of what comes across best live and subconsciously apply that to the new stuff you create. Not to mention that through that experience I’ve become a better singer, performer, player, etc. All of these elements lead to the next release hopefully being that much better than the last.

Coree Marx‎ to Christopher St. Clair It had been too long since the last time Coree and Christopher had spoken. He'd been the first person to seek the girl out when she was only seventeen years old after her first song had been written, sold, and hit number one on the charts. She would never forget what it felt like to hear his voice on her voicemail asking her to call him back, that he'd like to talk about an arrangement with her. She had been so nervous to write with the man and yet they would do it many times over since that time, ultimately developing what was an easy friendship between the two. When she was finally ready to take herself to that next level, to attempt performing her own songs, it had been Christopher that had encouraged her to speak with the executives at the label he was on and everything kind of snow balled from there. Although she was struggling her way through, finding performances to be far more difficult than she'd ever imagined, freezing every time her feet touched a stage, she hadn't yet lost her faith. Life was changing quickly for the young woman, but she'd never lose touch with the person she was, even in the midst of things coming together.
Just after six in the morning, she was awake before the sun as usual. Her long time boyfriend, Barron Presley, didn't have to be up as early as she did and for once, she wouldn't bother the man. Instead, it was a walk with the new boxer puppy, Gremlin, a quick shower, and a cup of coffee by the floor to ceiling windows that lined the living space of the new apartment. Everything felt new and although sometimes she didn't feel like it was real, she knew that she was right where she belonged. Glancing into the bedroom, she'd assure that Barron was still sleeping before she'd close the door gently as to not wake him. A quick text was sent to Christopher. -If you're up, give me a call.- Sitting down in a chair by the window, she looked out into the darkness, not at all able to shake the energy she'd experienced the night before, an energy that she wanted nothing more than to bottle and keep forever, an energy that she wanted to share with one of the few people that knew how deeply the woman had struggled for the last year, an energy that might just change the platform for the young artist entirely.
Christopher St. Clair The transplanted Brit was only too familiar with the struggles and perils of a sudden sky-rocketing career. There was a misconception the general public had about fledgling celebrities and thier seemingly ill-gotten gains -- the recognition that propelled his career (he’d often been confided in by random passerby) wasn’t a feat of fate but rather misinformation, slyly given. That people saw him as this slick operator with an agenda was greatly amusing to Christopher. In fact, there had been nothing ill-gotten about his modest beginnings. Given his rough start into the career that had been his saving grace both, both literally and metaphorically, he felt it his joyous task to provide for someone else as someone had been kind enough to provide for him. In the living room of his agent who had been gracious enough to put him up, he had donned headphones and sat on the couch, eyelids shut fast as his iPod shuffled through songs of faceless and altogether nameless aspirators. True inspiration and talent is hard to fake and in these zen-like hours that were the way he spent his evenings, Christopher had heard enough songs from wannabes that he wanted to shove superglue in his ears so that he would never have to hear such fakery ever again when sincerity shone through. Her song was honest, revealing in a way that no one could ever doubt. The bones of her song -- the lyrics, the haunting melody -- she was an oasis in a desert of posers.
Five o’clock in the morning and it wasn’t at all uncommon that he was up, fucking around on the guitar that had been his constant and unyielding companion since he was fourteen years old. Making music was easier when it was purely for the fun of it, not determined by a deadline. Given that he was still residing in his agent’s abode (on a couch he was sure had born witness to the Sixties) the whip of the ruler was always being slapped. Mechanically strumming chords, his mind had long sense gone off into its own world: fretting over minor details of his upcoming tour, how his dad’s birthday had come and gone last week and he hadn’t given any acknowledgement to it, how the springs in the couch had successfully broken through the material that separated his body from the metal coil and as such, had left a scar on his cheek because he was too knackered to wake up to deal with the residual sting. Mulling through his thoughts, he’d almost missed the text alert if his phone hadn’t been resting on the table, the prompt causing it to vibrate and make a particular annoying sound that he could’ve sworn would have woken his nana from her grave all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. Instant regret settled in as his eyes blurred over the contents of the message and focused on the name. Coree. There was no reason, that he could think of, that would’ve justified his reasoning for haven’t calling her in the past or even taking the small two hours and thirteen minute drive from his place to hers for a luncheon. In fact, he’d been in Nashville only yesterday to work on his record, but had negated to offer up an olive branch to her. Tapping on the phone icon by her name, he sat the phone on top of his guitar, pressed the speaker button and strummed on the instrument some more - the sound of a ringing phone had annoyed him for as long as he could remember - until he heard her voice on the other end. “Coree. Yeah, hi, it’s Topher. What are you doing awake at his god awful hour?”
Coree Marx The sound that came from the other end of the phone told her everything she needed to know.  He was awake and she hadn’t woken him up in the slightest.  She’d laugh instantly as her phone rang, bringing a brilliant smile to the blonde’s features at the name on the caller I.d.  Not a stranger to the early mornings, Coree had been an early riser ever since she could remember and didn’t know any other way.  Being involved with a man who loved his sleep hadn’t changed things for her, often giving her those first few hours of the morning to wake up slowly, walk the new puppy, Gremlin, and even delve into some writing of her own, she was normally careful not to bother anyone else at this hour, but she’d awoken just as excited as she’d gone to sleep and it would be evident from the first one to pass her lips.  “Topher!” she immediately exclaimed, entirely too awake for that hour for most human beings, yet it was par for the course with the woman.  “I always get up around now,” she confessed a moment later, reeling her voice back into something more manageable and less frightening.  “Barron says it’s a curse. I say it’s a blessing,” she confessed as she valued those hours at the beginning of the day.  She’d stay up late with him and get up early, never requiring much sleep at all, which he couldn’t seem to understand, and yet somehow she knew Topher would.
“I’d ask you if you’re busy, but by the sounds of it, you are,” she teased, hearing the strumming of his guitar there in the background as she’d quiet for a moment to just let herself listen.  The man was a musical genius as far as she was concerned and nothing could change her mind on it.  From the first time she’d had the pleasure of writing with him years before until now, the woman was just as mesmerized by him then as she was now.  Humming softly to the tune he played, she let her eyes fall closed and the music play through the phone as she swayed softly to the music.  “God I’ve missed you,” she confessed all too easily in a hushed whisper as she knew his fingers on those strings could simply do no wrong.  After a short time, she was back to reality, sitting in her New York City apartment, her coffee suddenly calling for a refill as she made her way back to the kitchen with the phone in one hand and a boxer puppy at her heels.  Recalling what it was she’d reached out to him for as his musical display there had caused quite the distraction in the woman, she’d clear her throat.  “So I had to tell you… I’ve got a show tonight playing with…” she paused, knowing the name would come across as someone entirely too well known for her to be playing with, aside from the fact that the man had been retired and no longer did shows at all, only running a record label and being spotted here and there.  “Trevor Masters,” she’d offer, giving another moment of pause for effect. (Jon Bellion is the musical inspiration)  “But that’s not even what I called to tell you really.  I called to tell you that last night… well, first, you know how the stage and I are in a love hate relationship, mostly on the freezing and not saying a word hate level?  Well.  We did rehearsal because Trevor’s got this idea that pushing me into bigger crowds is the only way to combat this stage freight thing… so we do rehearsal and then we go to dinner.  At dinner, the man literally hijacked the grand piano in the restaurant, started playing, and had me sing for the entire place, and I think we might’ve found my problems.  It’s not that I can’t sing or even perform to a crowd like I’ve been telling you for how long now?  No. I can’t perform /my/ stuff.  Give me anything else and I’m good to go.”  Whereas many artists would not be excited to find this out about themselves, it was a great relief to Coree, as was well marked by her quickly spoken, rambling words.  “So, as it turns out, I’m not a fucking loss!”
