not to nancy hate on main but this is literally her acknowledging that her brother's best friend going missing and then dying was traumatic for him but then never being shown to actually try and TALK to him or even do ANYTHING about it, and remember this is a tv show, there is no 'offscreen', thats like the whole mileven offscreen atraction bs, if they wanted to show nancy caring for mike they couldve, they made time to show jonathan caring for will even tho he wasnt even in the show in s1.

I think it's really cool to have Karen Wheeler as a character. Because Mike is the outcast boy who just wants to enjoy his interests in peace. Nancy is the ambitious girl who wants to be able to have control over her own life. Troy and James are people who enforce the norm by bullying. But Karen is passive.

Karen is a representation of what happens when you give in. She put it that was herself. When the world beats you so hard that your priorities shift from your dreams to just wanting to be normal treated decently.

Nancy frequently expressed not wanting to be like her mom in becoming a passive housewife but lately in Mike in contrast, which is interesting given their opposite starting points, there have been these little moments where it feels like, like Finn Wolfhard said in an interview, he *wants* to be normal. So Karen from a different perspective represents that ease. Giving up. But that idea of "I just want to be normal". Even if you're not committed to actually following through on that.

Karen represents a cautionary tale to Nancy. But she also represents a doubt eating away at Mike. What would be like if it was just...easier? It's everyone's individual choice. But Karen represents the less fulfilling but socially more tolerable. When you're unfulfilled you don't want that. When you're socially broken down, sometimes you do. Just to wonder what it's like.
