Chapter 1: Stranger Things
November 6, 2023: Mornings on Demand tv show
Voice over:
In 2016 the world of television was blessed with the amazing show Stranger Things.
In 2022 the world would be shocked when Nancy and Jonathan Byers, both of whom were fictional until this point, came out and released a book called “The Hawkins 16” chronicling their fight against the evil Vecna.
Some still don't believe their story while others want to know how the Duffer Brothers knew so much and why they changed their story.
Host of Mornings on Demand:
We are here today with the author of the best-selling novel, The Hawkins 16, Nancy Byers. Her husband Jonathan Byers provided the photographs and all sixteen of the members pitched in to write it.
We also have the creators and actors from the hit show Stranger Things that seems based on the book.
Today we see if we can prove the sixteen actually exist and if so how the Duffers knew and why they changed their story so drastically, especially with some of the sixteen.
So if we could have Dustin, Max, Lucas, Jane, Mike, Will, Jonathan, Steve, Nancy, Billy, Barb, Eddie, Robin, Chrissy, Argyle and Heather join us on stage, and also Matt and Ross Duffer along with Gaten, Sadie, Caleb, Millie, Finn, Noah, Charlie, Joe, Natalia, Dacre, Shannon, Joseph, Maya, Grace, Eduado, and Francesca come to the stage.
Nancy and Jonathan came out first and sat next to the host.
Slowly the others trickled out with the host explaining every person's personal life.
Jonathan and Nancy have been traveling the world letting people know the truth. They have an adopted daughter starting Hawkins Middle named Carrie.
Steve and Chrissy along with Billy and Heather all came out together.
They made headlines recently by deciding to raise their kids as a poly family. Between them, they have four boys aged 11.
Chrissy and Heather happened to go into labor the same day and both had male twins which prompted the discussion that it was the fate they all stayed together.
Aiden, Levi, Conner, and Issac are all excited to start middle school this year, the teachers in Hawkins, not so much.
Next Was Dustin and Jane, Lucas and Max, Mike and Will all came out in one big group. They each held the hand of their partner.
Will and Mike just made news by adopting their second child, a two-year-old named Olivia. Their first child, Conner turned eleven this week.
Jane and Dustin have decided to wait on kids while Lucas and Max have an eleven-year-old daughter named Zoe.
Barb, Eddie, Robin, and Argyle came out last.
Barb and Robin are focusing on advancing their careers before having kids and Eddie and Argyle are traveling together with Eddie's band.
As the host finished the last part the cast and crew of Stranger Things headed out altogether.
The host had become silent during this making Nancy a little nervous.
Nancy looked over at Jonathan and whispered “what’s going on now”?
Jonathan shrugged his shoulders and tried not to act as nervous as he was.
Suddenly the room went dark and when the lights came back on only the actors remained on the stage looking scared and bewildered. The Duffers looked like they were reliving a nightmare.
The host tried to calm everyone down but couldn't hide his own fear and guilt.
He had set this up. Worked with Vecna to get all his enemies in one place.
Vecna had promised him the sweet taste of power. He promised once he would be an important part of proving to the world that he was real.
Breathing in and out several times he watched the lights on the cameras click on and off while production assistants and the security team ran around trying to figure out what happened.
Then came the laughter. It was full of malice. Then he was there. Vecna himself and with him the sixteen that disappeared in chains.
Nancy gave the host a look of utter disgust and said “you fucking sold us out you asshole”.
The host looked pale and suddenly was grabbed by two officers and handcuffed.
“Vecna help me,” the host cried. Vecna raised his hand and suddenly the host was floating in the air, his bones cracking and his eyes fading to the back of his skull and then he dropped while Vecna laughed maliciously.
“I guess this proves your story is the real deal Nancy. You thought you best me but I just went into hiding to heal, to come back and exactmy revenge on all of you.
This world and everyone belongs to me now,” Vecna said and tugged the chains connecting the sixteen to him.
They gasped for air as the chains tightened.
“Now if everyone would just calm down, Ms. Byers will be reading the story she wrote. My niece is such a wonderful writer isn't she” Vecna said and pulled Nancy's chain so she was in a sitting position.
“What's he mean Nancy,” Mike asked nervously. “I don't know Mike but let's play the game for a while. Our kids are like us, they will figure it out. Plus our parents are there as well” Nancy replied as she picked up the book dropped at her feet.
She began to read:
The Hawkins 16; A story of survival
Written by: Nancy Byers
Photographs by: Jonathan Byers
This book is dedicated to all the amazing people in Hawkins who never gave up and to the fifteen people who stood with me to defeat the evil known as Vecna.
Taking a deep breath Nancy looked at Vecna who motioned her to continue.
Then she looked at the Duffers who looked pale.
“How did you know?” Nancy growled.
Both brothers looked at the floor. “We were born in Hawkins and grew up during it all” Matt said making Nancy even more livid since now she knew they knew the real story.
Feeling the chain connected to her tight she looked down at the floor, gathered her senses, and continued.
Chapter 2: Hawkins 1983
At the Harrington house in Hawkins: 2022
Hopper and Joyce watched in disbelief and anger. They would've been there but they volunteered to watch the kids.
“We have to figure out how to save them,” Joyce said, panicking. “I agree Joyce but what are we supposed to do?” Hopper said thinking about the kids.
Before Joyce could answer she heard Nanyc start to talk again. “For now let's keep our eyes on them this way,” Joyce said cuddling into Hopper's arms.
Hopper held her tightly as they went back to watching.
Back at the studio
Nancy continued reading.
Chapter 1: 1983 - the arrival
Nov. 6, 1983
Billy and Max Hargrove pulled up to the Welcome to Hawkins sign.
“Ready for a new chapter kiddo,” Billy asked ruffling Max’s hair
She nodded and they continued on their way.
They weren't that far in when a boy on his bicycle fell in front of them, luckily Billy was going slow enough to stop in time.
He saw some other kids ride off laughing and sighed. “Even in small-town Indiana kids are shits,” he said and went to the kid who fell.
Helping him up he said, “my name is Billy what's yours”? The kid wiped the dirt off his face and replied softly “Will Byers”.
Billy laughed at the coincidence. “Well kid why don't you put your bike in the trunk and I will take you home,” Billy said picking up the bike and leading Will back to the car.
He was about the same age as Max. Maybe she won't take too long to make a friend. The kid looked like he could use one anyway.
Will gave Billy his address and shocked Billy again. Their house was right next door.
The drive there was silent. Neither Will nor Max said anything and Billy didn't know what to say to a couple of twelve-year-olds.
As they drove they heard a disturbing howl from the forest but chose to just ignore it.
As Billy pulled up to Will’s house a woman and a kid his age came out the door.
As soon as the car stopped Will got out and the woman ran over to hug him.
The scruffy-haired kid looked at Billy and said “thank you for bringing him home. We were worried. I'm Jonathan and this is my mom, Joyce”.
Billy leaned against the car making Max groan. She knew that move. That was his “turning on the flirt” move.
“So Jon, what do you do here in Hawkins for fun and how would you like to experience that fun with me?” Billy said running a hand through his hair.
There it was. The “I'm smooth move”. Max just wanted to hide under the blanket that Billy had put on her during their drive from California but she was also awkwardly interested.
Jonathan blushed and shifting his weight said “I like to do photography if you would like to join me”.
Billy cracked his victory smile and leaning in said “how about you and me take some photos in the woods tomorrow” making Jonathan go red as a beet.
Jonathan nodded silently. “Oh yeah, we just live next door so if you ever need anything don't be afraid to knock,” Billy said making the shade of red on Jonathan even darker.
Max slapped her forehead and looked over at the other house. She didn't she the moving van which meant they were going to have to sleep on the floor making her groan again.
“Oh by the way the moving truck beat you so they moved everything in. The beds are in the bedrooms but the rest of the stuff is just in the living area. I went ahead and made the beds and everything. When my husband gets home with our daughter I will send him over to help move the furniture” Joyce said holding Will close to her.
“Thank you, Mrs. Byers, for helping with the beds and that would be appreciated but maybe he can come by tomorrow so we can get some rest. We've been sleeping in the car for about three days and could use the sleep on a real bed. Plus, I have to get the paperwork out for Max and me to start school here” Billy said looking exhausted.
Joyce looked sadly at the young man and wished she knew their story but she would wait. “Why don't you stay here tonight? Tomorrow is Saturday so Jim will be home all day and I can help you with the paperwork” Joyce said.
Billy looked at Max who had fallen asleep. Taking a deep breath he accepted and went to the driver's side, picked Max up, and followed Joyce and her kids inside.
Joyce got Max set up in her daughter Janes room on a fold-out bed and let Billy have the guest room. The kid looked like he hadn't had a good night's sleep in ages.
Joyce went to get some water for him and when she got back he was completely collapsed on the bed. She took his shoes off and got him covered up and quietly left.
Max was also sound asleep in Jane’s room so Joyce went to the living room to wait for Hopper and Jane.
When she heard his truck she went out to meet them. She told Jane that Max was asleep on a cot in her room and to be quiet and let her sleep.
Jane looked annoyed but nodded and after hugging her mom she went in and headed to bed.
Hopper and Joyce went inside and Joyce told him the whole story.
“You want them to move in don't you?” Hopper said with a knowing smile and Joyce nodded.
“It's fine with me and we can use the other house as a place for the kids to move into when they are eighteen” Hopper said with a laugh.
Joyce kissed him and snuggled into his arms. They both fell asleep right there on the couch holding each other oblivious to the fight that was heading their way.

Baking! (Yuta x you)
a/n : heyyo it’s friday, let’s have some “me” time and enjoy some imagine with Yuta! Idea came from @yutahoes comment on previous post HOT PATCHED
warning : none! suggestive, how you ended up with a bun in the oven! (your beloved Nami), and of course 2020 was a baking year and I am more than willing to share you the recipe i am referring to for this story! DM me :D also i got a bit too carried away :) but it’s gonna be fun :D
tagging : @2-3-t-i @yutahoes @ailoveyuta
with that said.. enjoy your scene!
Ever since the pandemic started and staying at home becomes a mandatory rule, you and your fiance, Yuta have been trying to overcome boredom with all possibilities. On the first month of staying home, you two are very excited about having “leisure” time while working at home. Both of you are delighted by the fact that you don’t have to wake up early, drive in the busy streets, and you just have to slip into your proper clothes when there is a board meeting. Considering your job is a magazine editor, you have meetings but luckily not every day.
Second month, you start to do yoga and exercises with Yuta every time he is bored, and he has nothing to do. Well, his comeback is still in preparation, so he only comes for regular practice and always got home when your office hour ends.
Fourth months, you pick up a new hobby and because your magazine company needs to make a new fresh content that suits the situation, the team comes up with a baking page. You are assigned to make the content, including taking pictures and trying the recipes your team made. You also have to do the editing but there’s help with that. You take the challenge, though you never bake before you see this as the perfect opportunity to start a new hobby. Things were great, the content is rising in demand since the world is baking suddenly! You got your raise and you enjoy doing this until your silly ass fell from challenging yourself to a wild yoga pose. You hurt your arms, they are a slightly fractured and you cannot make your baking content for the first three weeks of recovery, but you are so irritated to just stay in front of the laptop and watch your other friend make the pictures and cakes. So, when you can no longer hold yourself back, you plead the director board to give you back the baking section and they did love your job so you won the part back.
“Yuta can you come home earlier today?” you question the man who already wears his mask and has his training bag ready on his shoulder.
“Me?? I guess I’m done after lunch, I only have to practice singing today. Why?” he asks you back
You put on your sweetest smile “Don’t you want to try baking? I need some help with the rubric.”
Yuta’s eyes twinkle, it’s been his wish to try baking but because of practice and the amount of tools to wash and lack of time he hasn’t been able to do it. Now that you are offering him, he thinks he can seize the opportunity.
“Okay, I’ll try, who knows NCT will have a baking vlog after this, might flex about my skills” he smirks and you only grin at his cockiness.
“Okay, you can go.” You push him away after kissing his cheek and blushing when he winks at you and disappear behind the door.
Today you just have to wait for the team to send you the ingredients and recipes. You wonder what you’ll bake today no, what Yuta will bake today.
He was lucky the baking procedure he has to do today is easy. Simple lemon cake and you manage to get good pictures of Yuta’s hands and the aesthetic bowls and whiskers. You manage to hold the camera with your stiff casted hand, but it works even when you look super silly.
“Oh gosh! This is healing.” Yuta exclaims when his first cake comes out of the oven nicely and with a good aroma. You quickly take pictures and once it’s done, Yuta has already cut a slice and pops it into his mouth. “Yummy, I am talented indeed.” He sounds so confident and you hate to admit, his cake is better than what you expect and knowing your husband, you know he won’t stop bragging about this, he might even go as far as trying more baking recipes.
--
Your nightmare comes true, once his promotional schedule with NCT is over, he comes home with a load of baking supplies.
“Yuta, what’s all of this?” you ask when you help him bring in bags of spices, butters, and decorating tools.
“My promotional week is done and I have our well deserved rest! I am going to be productive and bake for you every day!” he smiles like a little kid who just get a chocolate and you can’t say no to him.
“Oh no, not every day Yuta!” you joke as you help him organize the spices into the kitchen racks.
He brought different types of flours and sugars, even bought yeast and baking sodas. Oh he really is planning to bake!
“Well, I have to finish some works have fun baking! Make sure you wear the apron and don’t set the oven too high. Wash the bowls too okay.” You pat his long hair and skip into your room.
Yuta takes his time to shower, sing in the bathroom, check the internet for easy recipes and even compare recipes from different websites.
His choice finally is decided on the famous banana cake, it doesn’t require mixer and he notices you have bananas at home.
“Flour, bananas, eggs, butter…” he bends to take the things out and places them all on the counter. Next he brings out the bowls and whiskers and the rest of the stuffs he needs.
“Okay all set,” he rubs his hands and takes the apron you have. Yuta’s lucky he can use your apron well, (thanks to his small waist). “And where is it,” he walks to the living room to get his small rubber band and as he bites the rubber between his teeth you happen to leave your room to get some water.
“Oh!” you exclaim when you see a hot scene reveling in your eyes. If you bring something, you’d drop it already.
There under the golden hours of the sun from the window, Yuta is tying his hair up and his lip bites is not helping you. Not to mention the apron fitting him well. You kinda regret not buying a “cute” apron.
“Let me help,” you grin when Yuta fails to tie his hair. Somewhat in the middle of tying his hair we was surprised to see you gawking at him. He blushes a little when you step closer and take his hair into one bundle and expertly you tie the band around it.
“There you go! Neat and tidy.” You click your tongue and run a hand down his exposed biceps.
“You’re teasing me, aren’t you?” you playfully ask him this when you learn just how “dolled” up he is. In your apron, smelling good, looking hot, and smirking.
“As much as you want me to tease you, see that?” he points to the kitchen and you follow his finger direction “I am baking you cake.”
You lead him to the kitchen, cool yourself down with a glass of iced water and Yuta starts to busy himself with the recipes.
He starts by measuring the cups of flour, sugars, and spoons of cinnamon and baking soda.
You choose to observe him instead of coming back to your work. You’re glad you have saved your works earlier and don’t have to return for it.
Yuta looks super serious when he cracks the eggs and starts mixing them to the dry ingredients. You take note at how accurate he is, you learned about the small details about baking through your rubric.
“Need help?”  you ask when Yuta starts to whisk the mixture together. He brings his bowl to his waist and with his tilted head and angled hand, he starts whisking the batter.
You have to hold yourself back when you see how he looks delicious right now. With an apron, a tied hair, tongue sticking out of his lips from focusing, his flexed arm and how he smirks at you. Gosh he’s the real cake here! You wonder how will he react if you suddenly come and bite him there on his neck which is inviting you to bite a mark there. Hey mark!
“No, I got this.” He winks at you and continues whisking the ingredients. Another minute passed by, he adds the mashed bananas and some cut apples for better taste. You focus on his actions but mostly enjoying the show he gives to you.
“You look hot.” You blurt that out loud as you secretly eat the choco-chips he will add later. “You think I look hot? You haven’t seen me whisk a whipping cream or make a meringue!” Yuta says as h places the bowl down and begin doing the next step.
You lean over the counter, eager to see what he is doing next. “Okay, all set just add choco-chips and stir and pour to container.” He smiles nicely to you, expecting to get praises or just a satisfied face. But all Yuta sees is your side smirk.
Yuta can always read you like a book, so without losing his cool, he checks you up from head to toe. He notices how you’re not focusing on him, biting your lips, and your ears and cheeks are as red as strawberries right now!
He connects the dots in his head and snaps his finger in front of your face. You jump in surprise “What?” you yell, clearly annoyed that your fantasy session is destroyed.
“No you’re staring at me too intensely! Stop it,” he acts like his innocence just got violated.
You click your tongue “Yuta, blame yourself!” you pull your hair in despair when you feel your body heating up more and feel tingles slowly creeping up.
Yuta is ignoring you when he shows off his flexibility by bending forward to put his container in the oven. “And that’s the right temperature, now we wait!” he tosses the mittens aside and leans his body to the table you’re seating at. He glances to the cup of water with only ice cubes left, he grabs it up and swirls it around before sipping the remaining drops.
“What are you looking at Princess?” his playful remarks are slipping from his lips. You bite your lips down and try to shake whatever idea you have in your head after seeing him drink the last drop of water like that is the best water in the world. His Adam’s apple bopping is not helping you at all, you lick your lips and lowkey will kill him for making this looks so yummy and advertise-able.
“Nothin’” you lie though it is as clear as day that you are “eating” him in your mind.
“You sure? You don’t look like that.” He says and then knocking the glass to his lips to take the remaining ice cubes in his mouth.
You nod your head and turn redder if it’s possible. Dang Yuta is clearly teasing you and you love it. “I-“ you can’t stop your sentence for the next thing he does is taking your lips there with ice cubes in his mouth. The cold sensation wakes you up from your day dream and you press your hands over his trained arms. He passes the cube into your mouth and you’re surprised with this new sensation. Oh Yuta and his surprises!
He continues taking you there until there’s no more cubes left and both of you are already breathing harder and the atmosphere has turn super hot. Next thing you know, you’re already on the sofa pinned down by Yuta as he teases you with butterfly kisses here and there.
“Yuta-“  you moan out his name when you have the chance, your hand pulls on his hair so he can stop kissing you for a while “Your cake.” You breathily remind him about the cake in the oven.
“Hm? My timer hasn’t gone off.” He ignores your attempt to stop taking you here.
“You want this right? Or do you want to eat me instead? You really look desperate earlier.” He nuzzles into your neck and gives some generous kitten licks there.
“Oh you were teasing me!” you defend yourself “Admit it.” You push him away to see his eyes and get the truth out, but Yuta is Yuta and he always has his way of making you lost. “No, I did not. You were this turned on by me, that you were having such sexy thoughts in the middle of the day.” His hand travels south and you already stifle a moan so he won’t be cocky about it.
He already plays with the hem of your pants, only seconds to pulling them away and eating you raw there, but his timer goes off and he has the biggest grin on his face, while you the biggest disappointment. “Yuta!” you’re already sounding so desperate, tears are forming in your eyes and Yuta only chuckles, he wipes your tears and stands up from between your legs.
“Oops! My bad, cake is done! Why don’t we try it when it’s hot?” he leaves you to turn the oven off and takes the cake out. He left you like that! All teased up and messy.
“Yuta- you will pay for this.” You groan before ignoring the pain from the edged pleasure and stomping your feet angrily to the kitchen.
“Come try this, tell me if this is good.” He offers you a forkful and you angrily chomp down on it.
“Bad.” You mutter, as you cross your hands over your chest but still chew on the delicious cake.
“Bad? This is so yummy! I can take this to the boys, and they’ll ask for more.” Yuta towers above you.
You pout “Fine, its yummy.” Your hand reaches out for some more bites, but you stop and shake your head “You. Finish what you did to me, or I cannot enjoy my cake.”
He giggles and in one swift motion already has you in his arms “Alright my princess, let me enjoy my cake instead!” he brings you to the room and you’re already giggly again, giving him kisses and playing with his hair.
You swear you will kill him if he only leaves you in the room and goes back to eat his cake in the kitchen, lucky you he did not do that. You both know that the cake will be cold once you’re done with the session but who cares when Yuta can bake more of them!
And that is probably how you end up putting a bun in the oven with Yuta!

A Love is Lost, a Love is Won (Joe Mazzello/John Deacon-platonic)
A/N:  This was written for @deakys-chesthair who asked me for a soft Joe and John.  Hope you like, Love. Here’s my vision of Joe finally meeting John, who is living a gratifying life. They share their commonalities, joys and challenges. Also, Joe has an amazing movie in the works!! There’s a little repurposed content from a Love is Love chapter, now Joe-focused with mostly new material. The title is from Brian’s beautiful gem, Dear Friends.
Warnings:  Reflections on death of parent and friend; some angst, mostly fluff
Sitting at the desk in his extra room just after daybreak, Joe eyed the weights and other exercise equipment around him, willing himself to work out for an hour. He sighed.  OK, a half hour. Nope. Not happening.  He stared hard, hoping the barbells could be moved through telekinesis and give his biceps a nice burn.
Joe slumped into the chair and logged into his phone instead. He hovered his finger over the Instagram app and then dipped it gently. It had been quite a while since he posted. He moved into the bedroom and took a quick picture of himself next to his packed, open suitcase on the luggage rack. He added the caption, “Headed to the UK for a great project.  Stay tuned.”
As soon as he posted, the hearts and comments flowed:  inquiries and congratulations about the project, declarations of love and a few marriage proposals.  Given his non-existent love life, Joe wondered if he should consider them.  Not all of those stans were crazed, he reasoned with a smirk.  But then a wave of darkness crashed over him as snarky, negative comments were posted. Why were people outright mean?  His heart rate quickened and he felt a sheen of sweat erupt behind his neck, physical signs of rising distress and anxiety: What if his fans were disappointed and the reviewers panned the movie?  He wished he could call his father and hear his calming voice reassure him.  With that not an option, he turned off his phone to stop those negative thoughts.
A few hours later, the phone rang with a London number.  He presumed it was someone from the production calling to provide some details.
“Joe Mazzello.” He answered cheerfully.
“Hello, Joe!” The sweet, melodic British accent was unmistakable.  “Brian May, here!”
“Brian, Hi! Wow! What’s up??” Joe asked excitedly.  Had it really been almost a year since they spoke?
“Well, I saw on Instagram that you’re headed to the UK!  Another movie?”  Brian asked positively.
“Yes!” Joe responded, excitedly.  “A tango of espionage and romance.  Directed by Ron Howard.  He’s a great guy.  So far, so good.”
“That’s fantastic!” Brian said.  “You deserve it!”
“Thank you! How have you been?” Joe inquired, adding, “I’d love to see you and Roger when I get settled in London.  I’ll be there a few months.”
“Things are good.  Families are good…Of course, we’d love to see you.” Then Brian hesitated, wanting to change topics.  “Uh, Joe, I have a proposition for you.   No pressure….I saw your post just before I rang John-Deacy-for our regular monthly call.  I mentioned you’d be in London.  He was very curious about you in a way he hadn’t been before.  He said it was time for you two to meet.  What do you think?”
“No kidding?? Wow!  Yes! I mean….you’re sure he’s ok with it?” Joe was excited, though a bit of trepidation crept in.
“Yes, very much so.” Brian said definitively.  “Veronica too.  I’ll email you his contact information.  It’s been a long time coming, yeah?  Will you let me know how it goes?” Brian inquired, his voice rising with curiosity.
“Of course.”  Joe said, thinking the conversation seemed surreal.  He refocused on the call.  “Great to hear from you.  I’ll reach out to John-and definitely will be in touch with you. And thanks, Brian. Thanks.”
After Brian bid farewell, Joe smiled in a daze.  He couldn’t believe he’d finally be meeting John Deacon.   He laughed to himself as he conceptualized the reunion as a television mystery drama: “John Deacon: The missing link from BoRhap….uncovered years later.”  He was curious how the show would play out.
*****
Joe stretched his legs and settled in comfortably in the back of the cab as it drove through the well-appointed residential communities on the outskirts of London.  He couldn’t wipe the smile from his face if he tried. Nor did he want to. His mind was peppered with positive thoughts.  It felt good to have a day trip out of the city – and a break from the intensity of work. Though he wasn’t complaining; the filming was going very well.  The cast and crew were fantastic, and working with Ron Howard was a dream.  Not only was Ron a creative and supportive director, he and Joe bonded over their experiences as child actors whose impressive careers continued into adulthood.  The film had already garnered a lot of positive buzz.  Joe felt he was positioned for a professional resurgence, thought it took longer than he wanted.  The worrisome thoughts and sadness that sometimes lapped at him were at bay.  As the cab pulled into a circular driveway with two cars, the August sun ducked behind some clouds painting a silver lining.  He paid the fare and grabbed his backpack.  The footprint of a modest house was built out with additions.  He checked his watch as approached the heavy wood door and knocked, pleased he arrived right at the appointed time for tea.
“Hello, Hello!” Joe heard that unmistakable, slightly garbled voice enthusiastically approaching the door.
John opened the door and stepped out into the covered portico.  “Joe.” he said, extending his hand with a warm smile. “So nice to meet you.”
Joe grasped John’s hand. “So nice to meet you.”  Joe responded. As Joe looked at John, decades of the bassist’s images flipped through Joe’s mind.  It was hard to believe this icon he had played on the big screen  was before him.  They were both overcome with emotion.  It was indeed a moment that couldn’t be scripted. Their hands still joined, they each lurched forward into a hug.  John rubbed Joe’s back affectionately, and Joe held John tightly in the embrace.
John pulled away and he took in Joe slowly starting with the wavy auburn hair sprinkled with golden highlights of the summer sun.  He moved down to the firm biceps protruding from his t-shirt and the outline of the broad chest. His eyes dropped and landed on his slender waist leading to fit legs accentuated by the low-slung black jeans.  He was even more handsome in person.
“I clearly got a needed visual upgrade from my movie doppelganger.” John chuckled and winked at Joe playfully breaking his gaze.  Joe laughed and stared at John. He was struck by John’s charm and ease, considering all he had heard about him being dower and anti-social of late.
“Come in, let’s get you comfortable.”  John said warmly, as held the door and he stretched an arm out toward the spacious living room off the foyer.  Joe unzipped his backpack and took out a blue silk pouch, which he slid into his front pocket.  He left his backpack in the foyer and took a few steps into the comfortable room.
This life lived, which he knew from his research, was laid out before him.  Gold records were displayed against a long wall in a den beyond. A long table in the back of the living room displayed photos in an array of elegant frames.   There were intimate shots of John’s family, as well as a few of him with various combinations of his band mates.  On the wall above the table hung a large framed photograph with about 20 people standing in a backyard.  Joe walked toward it, curiosity overtaking him, and then halted, suddenly sensitive about invading John’s privacy.
“Oh, that’s….”John’s voiced hitched.  He walked up to the photo and beckoned Joe with a long finger.  John took a deep breath, steeling himself to go back in time to that moment. “That was September 1991.  Had everyone over for a cookout to celebrate Freddie’s birthday.  Veggie burgers for Brian, of course.” John chuckled, deflecting the emotions from the day, now rising in him.
“It was the last time.” He paused, his voice shaking a bit. “The last time I saw Freddie fairly at ease, before he…his final deterioration….”   Joe took a small step closer to the photo. Freddie’s thin frame was accentuated by the large belt around his narrow waist.  Freddie leaned into Jim, and John was on the other side of Freddie, his arm skimmed the singer’s back.  Roger leaned into John, and Brian eased closely next to smiling Roger.  All of their broods were in front of them. Freddie was enveloped by the love of his band mates and, though not legally acknowledged, his husband.
“That’s lovely.  Shows how much you all loved him.” Joe said.  John looked wistfully at the photo and then, he looked down.  His eyes scanned for a new subject, needing to distract himself. Joe related to that reaction; looking at photos of his dad since his passing conjured a range of emotions that sometimes felt too much to bear.
John picked up a framed black and white photo of the band performing.  “This was one of our earliest shows, when I joined the band. I thought you did a great job portraying that time in the movie-the energy, the possibilities.  The four of us finding our togetherness….” He returned the photo to the table.
“Thanks,” Joe said, allowing a faint smile.
“Ah….,” John lifted a color photo in a wood frame which featured him in a blue t-shirt and pants standing behind Freddie at his piano, casting a loving gaze at the singer.   “Some version of this is floating around out there.   Freddie and me during “Somebody to Love” at the Montreal Concert.   One of Freddie’s favorites. He got me to sing on the recording, amazingly.” John laughed.  “There wasn’t much I wouldn’t do for him really.” John said solemnly as he stared at the photo.
“You were such a good friend to him,” Joe interjected positively.
“And, he to me,” John countered, his eyes intense.   John opened his mouth to say more, but closed it as Veronica entered.  She carried large tray with a teapot, butter, jam, sugar and cream-and a beautiful round loaf of bread on a wood cutting board.  She placed it on the coffee table that held plates, napkins cups and saucers.  The treats were surrounded by comfy chairs and sofas.
“Ah, here’s my blushing bride, Veronica.  Ronnie, Dear, this is Joe, Joe Mazzello.” John exclaimed.  Returning the photo, he shifted his focus to the present and his temperament to upbeat.
“Ah, I do see the resemblance.  A bit uncanny, actually.  ” Veronica intoned with a grin.  “Welcome, Dear. Come sit and relax. How about some tea and bread-made by John!” she offered graciously, as she sat on a chair and started to serve.
“Really?” Joe queried. “ I’m impressed!
“Well,” John said, a grin spreading over his face, delighted to launch into the explanation. ‘For many years, I’ve gone to this little café most mornings to get a cup of tea and a treat-and read my paper.  I read mostly online these days, amazing isn’t it? But I do like the feel of a freshly printed newspaper.  Anyway, they make lovely bread, and I spoke with owner about her techniques. I’ve always loved fresh bread-and the science behind it.  So, I took a class and have built bread baking into my routine.  It’s calming and nice to have a tangible product for your efforts. This is a cottage loaf, two loaves melded together.”
“We all enjoy this hobby,” Veronica enthused.
“This is fantastic, so buttery. Thank you,” Joe said, licking his lips after swallowing a generous bite.
After tea, John asked Joe. “Would you like to see the garden?
“I’d love to!” Joe said.
John led Joe through sliding doors into the expansive backyard that had a magical and peaceful quality to it.  Off to the side there was an intricate climbing structure in the shape of a castle, complete with a moat, drawbridge and turrets. The edifice included ropes, nets and bricks for climbing to the large room on top and a slide for a quick departure.
“Wow, this is unbelievable!” Joe said.  John walked over to the castle, Joe in tow, and he flicked a switch under the slide.  Suddenly, the window of the top room was framed in colorful lights.  Joe’s mouth opened incredulously.
“Was bored one day, and rigged that up.  The grandkids have their ice cream up there in the summer as the sun sets.” John said factually.
“Great to have a grandfather with an electronics degree.”  Joe said admirably. “Gosh, my nieces and nephews would have a field day on that. And I would too with them!” he added sheepishly.
“Uncle Joe, eh? How lovely,” John praised.
Joe nodded.  “Yeah, they keep me young.”  Both men laughed.   Joe looked around at the manicured plantings. “Your garden is stunning.”
“Thank you, yes, gardening is another past-time I enjoy.  Keeps me grounded. No pun intended,“ John said with a giggle.  “Let me show you my absolute favorite.”
John led Joe toward a large bed surrounded by a white wood fence, and he opened the gate.  Twenty or so fragrant rose bushes of all colors surrounded a sturdy, hand-crafted bench, its weathered wood was lit by the late afternoon sun. John stopped at a yellow rose next to the bench that featured orange and pink shades at its billowy edges.  “This is the Freddie Mercury Rose!” (1)
“No? Seriously?” Joe bent to take in the heady scent.  John gestured to the long bench, encouraging Joe to sit.  John took a deep inhale of the fragrant roses as he sat and Joe joined him.
“Yes, RosaBatMercury, introduced around 1994.”  John elaborated,  “Fan club members raised money to name a rose in memory of Dear Fred.  It has special meaning for me; it helps pull me back when I start to descend into my caverns of darkness:  loss, sorrow, worry.
“I have those caverns too.” Joe said, looking down.  “Especially since my dad died.”  Joe focused on the Freddie rose next to him to keep the tears at bay.
“So sorry to hear. When did he pass, Joe?”  John asked softly.
“May 2018, as we were filming Borhap, “Joe said, looking down.
“Must have been so hard for you.” John’s empathy showed in his eyes.
“Yeah, but the guys…they were so supportive. I don’t know how I would have gotten through it without them.”  Joe said.
Ah…good to hear you had their support.” John whispered.  Then he let out a loud sigh. “Fatherless sons. We can be a sad lot.”
“Yeah, I know your dad died when you were so young.  That must have been hard on you. I’m sorry..”  Joe said softly, raising his eyes to John.
John nodded.  “Thank you.  It was-and it made Freddie’s death so much harder for me.  Another profound loss.  But Fred always lived his life to the fullest-and kept sorrow and worry in their place-even at the end.  I know he wanted me to do the same,”  John smiled.
“I’m working on that.” Joe said, wiping his eyes on the back of his sleeve.  John reached over and hugged Joe, and Joe welcomed the older man’s embrace. Then Joe pulled away, a smile spreading over his face.
“I guess life hasn’t always been ‘a bed of roses,’ Joe smirked, adding, “Sorry, I couldn’t resist.”
John giggled.  “True, hasn’t, can’t always be, can it?  But yet-here we are,” he said, motioning to the tangle of beautiful, vibrant rose bushes surrounding them.
“One thing I’ve learned,” John said, “Millions of pounds in therapy later, is that sorrow can coexist with happiness.  And it doesn’t have to be the melody of the song.  It can have its day-yes, and sometimes it pulls you in.  But then, you get on with it.  You let in the good things-and the pleasant surprises along the way, yeah? The big success of BoRhap-and now this new movie for you.  New hobbies for me.  And a deep love of family – for both of us.”
Joe nodded and smiled. “It’s good to see you’re well. And happy.  It’s a relief actually.”
John smiled cheekily. “Yes, the mind fills in what isn’t provided, and the narrative is often a negative one, isn’t it?  Roger and Brian fuel it by pretending that we aren’t in touch.  They’ve certainly had some dramatic words to describe my detachment,” he said, more bitterly than he intended.   “But,” he countered softly,” I know they do it to protect me.  They are well-practiced in protecting friends they love.”   Both John and Joe looked down.
“We missed you during BoRhap,” Joe ventured cautiously, making eye contact with John to detect his reaction.   John nodded slightly.
Joe continued, “I would have loved to have had you on set.  And at the Oscars,” Joe’s face lit up, thinking of that special night.  Then he focused on John again.   “But, I respected your choice not to be involved.”
John looked over at Joe. “Sometimes, there’s no in-between. You’re either all-in or all-out and that’s what happened. I enjoyed it – well, most of it. But it ran its course, and after Freddie died, I didn’t...it was too painful without him.”  Joe nodded.
John looked around at the roses and said, “’to everything there is a season and a time to every purpose.’ (2)  That season had passed for me.  Had to move on, protect myself-and focus on my family.   I’m happy for Brian and Roger, that they’ve continued and their shows with Adam are successful.  We all got what we wanted.”
Then John smiled and touched Joe’s arm lightly, “It’s great the movie was made, and you showed our music to so many new fans--and increased our royalties.” He laughed.  “I really am appreciative.” John leaned in and hugged Joe.
Joe broke apart. “I have something for you.  When we wrapped BoRhap, we were able to take some props.  I took a few picks-and always hoped I’d be able to give you one. Not that you need it, of course.” Joe dug into his front pocket and retrieved the silk pouch and handed it to John.  “And, Happy Birthday!”
John smiled at him and carefully removed the pick and held it up.  “How thoughtful of you.  Well, we must give it a workout, mustn’t we?”
“Oh, no,” Joe said, “I’m way out of practice.”
“Well, good,” John laughed, “You won’t upstage me, then.  Come.”
John led the way back to the house and they entered a door at the basement level.  He pressed a few switches on the wall and a studio with track lights came into view.  Basses on a stands, amps, a small drum set, microphones and speakers were positioned around the ample area.  “Luke uses this space mostly now.   Here, let me set you up.”  John gave Joe a bass and took one himself. After some tuning, John strummed and said, “So, how about ‘Under Pressure?’” They jammed for awhile, and then Joe looked at this watch.  “I should head back. Due on set early tomorrow.  He took out his phone and called for an Uber.
They stood at the entry foyer as the car pulled into the driveway.
“It was so great spending time with you.” Joe said.  “Thanks for inviting me.”
“You’re welcome.  And, Likewise,” John said. “I’d like to stay in touch. if you….”
“I’d really like that.” Joe said.
As they hugged good-bye, Veronica looked on holding a parcel of bread for Joe to take with him.
John released Joe, “I think we can count each other as dear friends.”

GRAFIC LUCY
April 26, 1953
Tumblr media
On April 26, 1953, Lucille Ball appeared on the cover of the Chicago Sunday Tribune’s Grafic Magazine.  Inside, the article is titled “Lucille and Desi. $8,000,000 TV Stars” by Hedda Hopper.
Tumblr media
The photo on the cover is very similar to one that also appeared on this 1954 issue of Dell’s “I Love Lucy” comics. It is likely the phots were taken at the same time during the same photo shoot.
Tumblr media
By HEDDA HOPPER
LUCILLE BALL, and Desi Arnaz. in their wildest dreams during their upsies and downsies, never imagined that one day they - a couple of strolling players - would be signed to a two-and-a-half year television contract for $8,000,000.
That's a heap of cash in any man's language, and in American money it's like finding the Glory Hole gold mine or stubbing your toe in your own back yard and starting an oil gusher. For actors to sign that kind of contract it's a Disney fantasy come to life.
Lucy has used a lot of gold dust in her hair, but she's certain now that Peter Pan came to life and covered her from head to toe with pixie dust. But, being Lucy, her one comment after signing the fabulous deal with her TV sponsors was: "It couldn't happen to a nicer pair of kids. I mean our two children, of course."
And those kids are as famous as their ma and pa. All over America last January, second in news importance to Ike Eisenhower's inauguration, was the birth of Lucille Ball's baby boy. The interest in the big event was fantastic. Tho they've been kicking around Hollywood for a long time, Lucille and Desi have grown into an American Institution in two years via TV. They've received more than fifty awards; their names have become household words.
I was In Washington for the in inauguration, when Desidero [sp] Arnaz was born.
I’d like to straighten out one point. Lucy didn't have her baby by caesarean to please her sponsors. The operation was necessary. She had her first child by the same process, and since the caesarean operation could be set for a definite date, the birth was worked into the script of the show. The writers took full advantage of it. Since the show deals with an average couple, the pre-natal period reflected that of millions who have, or were having, babies. And to make sure that nothing in poor taste crept in, the Amazes had a Catholic priest a Jewish rabbi, and a Protestant minister check each script.
Tumblr media
Lucy wanted a boy, and her doctor told her she'd have one. "I didn't pay any attention to his prediction," says Lucy. "He told me my first baby would be a boy, too. So I had a girl."
Their show sticks to real life situations and mirrors the trials, tribulations, and fun of marriages enjoyed by millions of average men and women.
Desi credits the success of the show to that fact "Its an average love story with humor," he explains. "Audiences believe I'm in love with Lucy, and I am. Lucy ' could be a straight dramatic show. In fact, I think there's no really good comedy that couldn't be turned into drama. I believe the average man gets a kick out of Ricky (the name he uses on the show), because he somehow always manages to dominate the woman, tho the victory is not great. Women love Lucy since she gets by with things they'd like to do, but wouldn't dare try."
A fan wrote Desi: "I used to think my wife was crazy. But after following Lucy, I'm convinced all women are that way, so I'm reconciled to my wife's behavior."
Desi is proud of the fact that he and Lucy help many couples in distress. “Lucille and I used to fight a lot," says he. "Then we discovered a sense of humor about situations that came up at home. We learned to live together and like it just as Ricky and Lucy do on the show. In real life, we still have our differences, but we never go to bed without speaking. We may have a peeve between us, but one of us will always say, 'All right What are you mad about? ' That either settles It or starts a real battle, which gets the beef off our chests."
I wanted to know how much Lucy and Ricky resembled the real life Amazes.
"A lot"  Desi laughed. "For example, we can never agree on the temperature of our home. I like it hot Lucy wants it cold. We put that In the show. For television the characters have to be exaggerated for the sake of comedy. But sometimes situations come up at home that give our writers ideas. For instance, our baby. Writing him into the script was completely natural. We knew what happened to couples expecting a baby."
“It was the first nine-months' pregnancy that lasted only seven weeks," said Lucy, meaning that the baby business was only on seven programs.
“And neither of our writers, Madeline Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr., is married," said Desi.
"But they know whereof they write," said Lucy. "Within three weeks after the baby was born, we received 20,000 letters, 2,000 telegrams, and hundreds of packages.”
"How many products do you indorse?" [sp] I asked.
"It's easier to tell you what we haven't indorsed, [sp]" said Lucy. "We haven't indorsed [sp] locomotives or aircraft. We have art office now on 5th Avenue in New York just to handle merchandising."
I asked how much money they could keep from their $8,000,000 contract.
"About four dollars and fifty-five cents," said Desi. "In the dear old days before taxes we could have retired for life In one year. But the government needs money. We're not complaining. Lucy doesn't have much business sense anyway. When it comes time to pay taxes, she doesn't bother trying to get exemptions. She just says, 'Bring me the check, and I'll sign it.'
"And you're still expanding instead of cutting down?" I asked.
"Yes," said Desi. "I put in 10 hours daily at my office."
"I don't bother with business," said Lucy.  “That's Desi's department."
“We've got over a hundred people working for us now," said Desi. "We'll do 32 television films a year, and I'm getting a man to take over the business management so I can devote more time to the creative phase of our work. We. plan to produce other shows. Then there are pictures."
"I'm happy you two are going to make 'The Long, Long Trailer,' " I said.
"That," said Desi, "is a dream. I read the book and tried to buy it But I didn't have the money to compete with Metro. So Pandro Berman called me up and asked if Lucy and I would be interested in reading the script I told him sure, to send it over. And It was 'Long, Long Trailer.”
"It's a honey," added Lucy. "I once lived with my family in a trailer. It was all right until we all got claustrophobia. That's bad enough when you get it alone, but when it hits a whole family at the same time whew!"
"We can make pictures any time we like," said Desi "But we'll concentrate on television. But if either Lucy or I wants to do a movie, we can always pile up a backlog of TV films that will tide us over."
"I'm not particularly interested in going back to movies," said Lucy. "TV is my dish. We don't see a script at least I don't until 10 o'clock Monday morning. On Tuesday, we read from 10 to 12, then lunch. After that we start shooting. The writers usually aren't even on the set If I don't understand something, either the producer, Jess Oppenheimer, or our director, Bill Asher, explains it to me. We work four days and rest three. You cant do that in picture-making.”
"Incidentally, Desi's malapropisms aren't written into the script. The script is written in straight English. But If Desi butchers the King's English during a rehearsal, it stays in."
"Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance are wonderful additions to your cast," I said.
"We were lucky to get them," said Lucy. "When Bill's name was mentioned, I almost dropped dead. He was a big star and we couldn't afford him. But somebody said it wouldn't hurt to try to get him. Remember this was two years ago; and everybody here was scoffing at TV. Nobody knew."
People didn't know many things. For years I've watched Lucy's work and considered her one of our finest comediennes. She has versatility and great timing. But nobody gave her break. Tho he'd done several pictures, Hollywood just couldn't see Desi for dust. He had to make a living with his band, and this put him on the road for long periods. Result: "I Love Lucy."
"When we got the idea for the show, people said audiences wouldn't accept us as husband-and-wife team," said Lucy. "They didn't think audiences would believe that a girl like me and a Cuban like Desi could be married. I remember telling you this, Hedda, and you yelled back, 'But for Pete's sake, you' are married!'".
Because the Amazes finally decided to portray life as they found It regardless of how dizzy it was, they found their way of life, says Lucy. "If you have a hunch, back it," is Lucy's advice.

Jensen Ackles’s Supernatural journey began and ended with a road trip.
Fifteen years ago Sam and Dean Winchester (played by Jared Padalecki and Ackles, respectively) began their drive across the country in a jet-black 1967 Chevy Impala, hunting monsters, demons, and, eventually, God himself. Ackles was 26 years old at the time (the same age as the James Dean–like figure he portrays on the CW series), single, and coming off a steady career on TV, including a popular role on Days of Our Lives.
The actor is now 42 years old and just finished filming the 15th and final season of Supernatural after the coronavirus pandemic shut down production for several months. To mark the occasion, he did what Dean would do: He took a road trip. But this time things looked a little different and not just because he lacked monster-killing weapons and the iconic Impala.
“It was a sprinter van,” he tells me, back at home in Austin, after driving to the East Coast with his wife, One Tree Hill actor Danneel Harris Ackles, and their three young children. And instead of fighting the forces of evil along the way, he questioned what life might look like without the show that's been a vital part of his identity for a decade and a half.
“I needed to get back home and start figuring things out and start unpacking my life that's been in Vancouver for 15 years,” he says. “What's the next move? Where am I headed next? What interviews am I going to do? Luckily, my wife was like, ‘Stop. Can you just take a breath for a minute and play with your kids on the beach?’”
So he did. But now he’s back, talking to me over Zoom with his new, prized commissioned drawing of Winchester brothers’ smashed-up Impala behind him (a gift from his wife by artist Alessandro Paglia), trying to put into words what it feels like to leave behind a 15-year legacy.
“How have you changed in the last 15 years?” he asks me. Well, I've watched a lot of Supernatural, to be honest.
Existentialism aside, Ackles is clearly ready for his next act, even if the show's massive, fervent fandom—known as the SPN Family—may not be. Back in March 2019, Ackles, Padalecki, and their costar Misha Collins devastated diehards when they announced they'd be ending the series on their own terms after more than 300 episodes. A bit of good news is that fans will still have the conventions that honor the show and cast meet-ups that take place all over the world. Eventually.
“I love how big it's gotten and how we feel like a traveling circus going from town to town,” Ackles says. “Obviously, we'll have to wait until we're all allowed to gather in large crowds again, but I think as soon as we can start going to concerts and festivals and movie theaters, we'll start those back.”
For now Ackles is preparing for his life beyond Dean Winchester, which includes his anticipated role as the first-ever superhero in season three of Amazon Prime Video's The Boys, as well as a new production company he's starting with his wife. He filled me in on all that, how the Supernatural finale changed due to COVID-19 restrictions, and, of course, how he got his hands on the iconic 1967 Chevy Impala—which he drove to Starbucks the morning of our call.
Glamour: I almost don’t know how to ask you how it feels to end a life-changing, 15-year project like Supernatural.
Jensen Ackles: I understand how rare it is and that it's a bit of a unicorn to have a show that runs this long and to be as intensely part of it as I have. I mean, you've got procedural dramas—you know, Law & Order and stuff—but a lot of those casts come and go. To have the same two leads in every single episode for 15 years, I think, is a pretty rare feat. So I'm proud that we did it. That was really the overwhelming feeling when we filmed our last day and our last scene. It wasn't a mourning process; it was more of a proud moment of “Look at what we've done.”
The finale of Supernatural was already planned before COVID hit. Did anything in the last two episodes have to change because of filming restrictions?
We had to drop some ideas we had for the final episode, but it didn't change the story. We were supposed to have a lot of familiar faces come back, and we were going to try to filter them into a montage. It was going to be almost a break from the story and a look at how far we've come—a little tip of the hat to the fans—and we would all be able to celebrate together. Obviously, we couldn't do that. So that part of the finale episode got nixed. But the story and how it ends up, that stayed the same.
You’ve been talking about wanting Dean’s Chevy Impala, Baby, for literally years now. Did you get it?
I've wanted it since the second episode. I was like, “Wait a second. What's going to happen to this car when it's over?” I've been angling to get that car since literally season one. I was thinking, Why wouldn't they give me the car?
Then as the years went on, I thought, Oh, I'm gonna have to fight for this now. So I kept seeing if I could put it in my contract, like for years and years, and the studio, the producers were like, “Don't worry, don't worry about it.” Wink. I was like, “Yeah, you say that now.” So, in my last contract that we had, I didn’t ask for a bigger trailer; I didn’t ask for more money or more time off or anything. I said, “I want the car.”
That car is sitting about 40 feet from me and my garage. I actually drove it to Starbucks this morning and picked up some coffee.
Your wife, Danneel, has been appearing on Supernatural since season 13. Do you two have any plans to continue acting together?
We've got a company now, Chaos Machine, and we're starting to produce things together. So it'll be a more of a producing team as opposed to an on-camera duo. That’s the thing with this industry...you never know where the roads may lead or what’s just around the corner. But she and I love that. And we certainly love a challenge.
You two already run a brewery, Family Business Beer Company, together while raising a seven-year-old and three-year-old twins. How do you work together as husband and wife versus as business partners?
Very similarly actually. Divide and conquer.
Speaking of behind-the-scenes roles...you’ve directed five episodes of Supernatural. Any plans to direct Jared Padalecki's new show, Walker?
I would absolutely love to, but with my new gig on The Boys, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to. We're trying to figure out scheduling.
They're in the midst right now of building my costume for The Boys, which is a custom-built superhero suit. That is way more intense than I anticipated, which is cool. But I have to literally be in L.A., like, every two weeks for the next three months. I think it's six fittings and they're each like three- to four-hour fittings. They're literally molding things to my body, so it's intense.
What will be on your playlist for you to listen to while they mold things to your body?
Actually, funny enough, that was the first thing they asked me. Laura Jean Shannon, the costume designer, she says this is important because every superhero [she’s worked on] has a type of music. So she was like, “What would Soldier Boy listen to?”
To be fair, the first time we see him, it's World War II. So we're talking the ’40s. So we listened to big band and swing the whole first day.
In addition to your new projects, you’ve also been posting a lot about Black Lives Matter this summer—from handing out supplies at a protest to giving over your social media accounts to Black activists and politicians. What have you learned?
Looking at my kids and being a father, I’m thinking, Wow, what kind of world are they gonna have? So I've started to listen a little more and I've started to want to understand other people's experiences so that I can make a better choice about the actions I take. I've gotten pushback—[in the past] even I've looked at actors using their platform to be political and been like, “You know, nobody needs to hear that. Just do your movies and do your show. You're not a politician.”
But I've now learned that, no, you've been given a platform now with social media. And even before that, when you would give an interview to a publication, there's a voice there that is yours and you get to choose how you use that. And I think that's a responsibility that people need to take seriously. So I’ve tried to do it as inclusively as possible.
Before I let you go, please tell me what fans can expect from the final episodes?
I've said a few times that the second-to-last episode really feels like the season finale and that the final episode feels like a series finale. The series finale, episode 20, is this beautiful throwback to the whole show—to what it was, what it has been, and what it is today.
Okay, one more! What’s the creepiest thing that’s happened to you on set, in honor of spooky season?
Anything that's kind of been paranormal or supernatural? I think that they stay away. If that stuff was to happen, it's not going to happen on our set because we've got too many tools to take them down.
If your lore is correct, that is...
Right? That's true. [Laughs.] Oh, it was pepper, not salt? Damn it!
Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. E.T. on the CW. This interview has been edited for clarity.

An Uninformed Rumour (TUA)
Hi everyone
I have chosen to do another character deep dive of my fav glamorous gossiper, Allison Hargreeves, The Rumour. much like my Grace deep dive i will be using one aspect of her to anchor my ideas, the focus will be on her as a mother as suggested but @nikkiwriteswords
(Disclaimer: I will be taking about Allison's relationship with Luther, now these are to be critical and analytical observations of the text but there is going to be some personal insights, in that i formulate an opinion based off the text, I am not a professional by any means so i am not qualified to talk about the overall topics of incest and/or abuse, but i will try to be as respectful as possible, but if there is something i get wrong or is distasteful, please politely point it out to me and i will either rewrite of get rid of whatever it may be if needed, I do not want any misinformation or anything accidentally hurtful here, but if that is the case i apologise and i will fix it)
now with that out of the way
Allison’s character is well crafted for may reason’s (as they all are) but want stands out to me and a lot of others is that she is a character in the middle of a transition.
from a self centred girl who got anything she wanted, when she wanted it and would do anything too just about anyone to get it, into trying to be a loving sister and in my opinion one of the true hero’s of the story
but for me she’s oh, i love her.
So what brought about this change? in order to do that, we must look at what lead up to her behaviour in the first place.
As a child
now the show lays it on thick that she wants or wanted attention
1- Vanya’s book, when saying this cuts to Allison
2- the fact she went to Hollywood and become a star and get roles she did not get off her own talent (rumouring for them)
3- she even has a posters of herself in her childhood bedroom (kid her, there are at lest 3)
Tumblr media
in this image we see all the kids going to say good night to Hargreeves, Allison is front and centre, she is the standing the most straight, with her hands behind her back and she’s first to smile and the only one to be angry, note that
1- this leads me to believe that this whole lets say goodnight to Dad thing was her idea, as i said she is in front and is the only one who has an angry reaction
2- the fact she wants Hargreeves attention at all says she has some level of need for him she’s not getting anywhere else (her siblings or Grace, mind you that’s not to say they don’t care about her, it’s just not what she’s after)
3- her ‘he’s always busy’ means she might have tried this before, not this exact thing per say, but tiring to get his attention through acts like this, (e.g getting everyone together to do something or talk to Hargreeves)
4- this is adult Allison’s flashback
now this straight up neglect and rejection for Hargreeves time and time again, leads me two think that since she could not get what she wanted form Hargreeves she went to the next best thing in her mind, Luther
NOW let me be clear, when I say she went to Luther for attention it is because
1- He was Hargreeves favourite, his number one
2- she saw Luther (as first) as a way to understand what she needed to be to get to there father.
3- she probable did not do this intentionally, I think she simply did the opposite of what Diego did in that, Diego resented Luther and saw pulling away form him as being the same as pulling away for there father.
4- so Allison pulled Luther closer to try and be seen in the same way he was, to get what she thought was the love Luther got, (now we all know that Hargreeves did not love Luther, it was merely the perspiration of what the kids thought love was at the time)
Tumblr media
Now this scene, were they broke the rules, Luther gave her the locket and Hargreeves interrupted them. a few things to note:
1- she must have come up here multiple times to set this up
2-they planned to go up together
3- it’s made to look like a like house with ‘framed paintings’ and ‘wallpaper’ she is literally playing house with Luther (also making it more clear she set it up, with Luther’s reaction to it)
4- Luther got her this locket WITHOUT Hargreeves finding out
5-Hargreeves dose not care that they are together he is mad that they disobeyed him
6- They NEVER came back up here
My guess is that this was when the kids started to turn on Hargreeves as shown by the fact Luther is breaking his fathers rules (getting the locket). now i know they broke rules as a group (donuts and the bowling ally) but this is the only time that we see them doing so individually (expect five but that’s why he’s gone)
Now Allison is starting to rebel, and seeing Luther as separate to there father, this was most likely when everyone else was starting to do the same. when they where all about to question what they where doing and why they should stay. I think even Luther to degree but since they never went back to this place until ‘the day that wasn’t’ I think Luther dug in his heels a bit to not break his fathers rules again (unless in the group)
This could be seen (by Hargreeves) as another example of her being selfish by distracting his number one and doing what she wants and not think about the team or the worlds needs. my guess is that she was told as much but not directly as that would give her some attention and she would do more things like this if that were the case (because he’s an ass-hole) but she did not, as i said they never came back up here.
Tumblr media
1- she’s looking at the ground and not Hargreeves
2- Luther is looking at him
3-the lighting is colder in there face’s and warmer on there backs (the good time is behind them, they are not safe and warm anymore)
Then it happened, Ben died
This shook everyone of them to the core and was the turning point for just about all of them.
This is when Allison’s turn begin from a little girl who wanted her fathers attention, to the attention seeking, selfish diva.
I think the moment this path set in for her was the day she left but more specifically when she left Luther’s locket behind. Leaving it behind meant that, she was leaving her last connection to the umbrella academy behind to make a new life for herself.
also note that this is also when we see her first breaks a promise she made to herself and someone she cares about ‘I’ll never take it off”
Luther saw this as Allison leaving him behind as well because of this, he was wrong though. She said so her self in ‘We only see each other at weddings and funerals’
this scene in given more weight when Allison told Luther she wanted to leave.‘this place yes, but not you’ that’s what the locket was to her a product of the place and not the person how gave it to her. This also shows that in some ways she still see Luther as part of there father (even if just subconsciously). Meaning she never took Luther’s feelings about it into count (not that she meant to hurt him, it just never cross her mind that it would)
(I will finish this thought, when i get to her turn in the shows time line in ‘the day that wasn’t’)
(Side note I LOVE the re-watch value this show has)
As a Diva
Tumblr media
Now we never see her fully absorbed into her diva self (expect the snip-it from ‘I heard a rumour’) but we know,
1- she did not get parts fairly
2- she did literally any role (Romcom’s, to Oscar bait movies i.e wheel chair lawyer, and oceans 8 in this universe nothing against that movie but it was a big cast with big names and Alison jumped on that band wagon)
3- she was superficial to the point that someone actually asked her what fashion brand she was going to wear to her fathers funeral (this one is on the paparazzi but they seemed really comfortable asking)
Now this leads me into the other part of her life her, husband Patrick and her daughter Clair
I think she did to Patrick what she tried to do with Luther but on a bigger scale, She’s playing house with him. Not to say she didn’t care about him just she build up a fantasy in her head of what her life should be and tried to fit him into that model. And she could probably do this relatively easy with or without her powers as we don’t really know the type of person he is outside of protecting his daughter from Allison’s powers.
so his is a somewhat decent person
but that doesn't mean he was not into her fame, money and overall willing to do as she asked, as she is by her own admission very controlling. so Patrick went in somewhat knowing this.
BUT there was only one person in Allison's life that was not swayed but her money, fame or words alone
her daughter.
As a Mother
ok now lets look at Allison as a parent before the start of the show, (or main plots timeline)
we see in 1x08 ‘I head a rumour’
Tumblr media
that she is willing to MIND CONTROL her daughter into going to bed, now this scene on it own is not to harsh (for people how have not experienced abuse like this). but note that
1-  that Allison tells Luther that she did this a lot to the point that I dare say Clair my not have been able to have much of a personally outside of what her mother demeaned for her (as i said she is playing house and she was losing so she cheated into get what she wanted)
2- she did it not just do this to her daughter but to anyone that was in her way, the Rumour's in the car (audio only) there’s soccer team, film roles, making someone her friend and of course the most damning being “i head a rumour that you love me”
Side note: I find it oddly hilarious that she had to rumour her way onto a soccer team, because she a trained superhero, but then again it could have had more to do with her inability to work on a team that made this needed
3- she did not see this as a bad thing (at first) as she said to Luther she felt like she just had an advantage, I feel like this is a common theme for her as through out her life that’s all she did take what ever advantage she had and ran with it (mind you this is most likely the instinct that kept her alive)
4- we see her plead with Patrick after he finds out but she did, not to say sorry but to simply let her explain.
We know what followed next for Allison a divorce and losing her child, 8 months before the funeral. at the funeral we see she is a very different and remorseful about what she has done to her daughter (as she said to Luther)
So what happened?
we know losing her daughter is what dives her to be better, but at what point did she realise she was wrong?
We don’t get this answer which i love because in transitions like this it’s never just one thing or moment that makes you question how wrong you were its reflection on everything you’ve done as shown in the car in ‘I heard a rumour’.
Moving on,
let’s talk about her as a mother in general now that i have laid out the ground work for Allison’s character,
I will do this by looking at the other mother in the show Grace,
Tumblr media
(this pic looked cute, plus it was the only one i found of them in frame together)
Now both love there kid’s
But Grace as I have explored in my post ‘The Grace of motherhood’
Grace as a mother
1-get’s freedom and humanity form being a Mother
2- is build to be there Mother, it is her whole life
3- but is still a bit hands off in that she has no say in there hobbies, interests (out side of encouragement) and them leaving her in the end as she dose not try to keep them there either.
Now Allison as a mother
1- It’s not all that she is
2- she has a life out side of it she has a job, friends (not real ones) and her relationship with Patrick ect
3- is more controlling the Grace ever was, in that she wanted Clair to behave and act a certain way and will force it if necessary
4- using her powers all the time
now Allison dose change this mind set and what I find interesting is that she never compared herself to Hargreeves or Grace when taking about her parenting, nothing like,
i was just like Dad
i don’t know how Mom did it
Mom only had us and nothing else
Dad was never around so i tried to be there for Clair
In fact the closest she ever came to this was when talking about Grace ‘No wonder she lost her mind, to be away form yours kids.’even then this was out of empathy for Grace and in reflection not excusing or exampling her own choices.
This actually really in character for her actually because, as he says to Vanya again in reflection ‘Your an adult now Vanya, you don’t get to blame any of your problems on anyone but yourself.”
Theses are the words she lives by now, that sums up her arc to a tee.
She may have been left uniformed to how to be a good person by her father and was not given the tools to be a good mother but she can’t and won’t dell on that. This ambition chases her to make a lot of mistakes and she must reassess herself to try and find a better way. As she is not giving up on being a mother she just needs to find a better way to it.
Can i say how refreshing that is, as I see a lot of media going with someone is just a mother or they should be more than a mother (I’m not apposed to that story). but what i like about Allison and Grace is that it takes that idea and says, no one is Just a mother by happen chance (in that you actually care, love and support your children)
look at it this way, Grace and the audience found her humanity by realising that she cares and loves these kids and they care and love her.
Allison finds her personal redemption in being better person is the only way to be a better mother to Clair and that’s what she wants more than anything.
As a Hero
Now I said at the start that i see Allison as one of the main hero’s of this story and I meant that. But the thing I adore about it is how she did it.
She kept a promise.
what do i mean, I have already mentioned one of her promises
Promise 1- keeping Luther’s locket on,
In ‘the day that wasn't’ she put it back on when she gave up on the world and going to see Clair just before this scene.
Tumblr media
she has it on and this the only time in the series that they are able to reconnect and find an understanding with one another, and Luther is also more open to her here and willing to move past his life and go with her to find something else (meeting Clair)
To ‘the day that was’ and Allison never put the locket back on and the whole thing went different as she went with five to save the world and Clair (five says so himself more or less)
now this made a ripple in there relationship when Luther when to the rave and was with a furry. now they connected in the phone booth but until then they were at odds about Vanya (a subject i’m not touching with a ten foot pole)
Promise 2- not to use her powers any more
she made this promise after losing Clair as way to insure that the things she had in her life where real and her’s.
she only beaks this promise when Vanya is getting out of control note that,
Tumblr media
(i’ll use this angle as to not show blood)
1-  She told Luther she doesn't do it any more because she ‘made a wish and she could not take it back’
2- she dose not use it against Hazel or Cha cha even tho they are trying to KILL her
3- she dose not use it on Leonard to get him away from Vanya or to tell her why he is hanging around Vanya
4- to get Patrick to let her talk to Clair
5- or to keep Clair for that matter (as she said to Luther)
Now when she did break her promise she did so hesitantly but it didn’t matter it ended badly for her, she was left without her voice.
But not voiceless
The Final promise and the only one she did not break.
Promise 3- be a better sister to Vanya
“all i ever wanted was to be a good sister to you”
breaking her own promises is what lead to her down fall, with Luther her daughter and then her own voice. she had let Vanya down there whole lives but not this time.
she was going to keep this promise even if it means the end of the world, she was not breaking another promise, not to herself and not to Vanya, (I love the dramatic irony of whenever Allison breaks her word bad things happen, almost like an anti-rumour)
But good god do i love this conclusion.
Tumblr media
she spares Vanya as she can’t bring herself to kill her sister not when she knows why this is happening. They all had there parts to play in the end of the world and she did not want Vanya to be the only one who payed for it. Allison is trying to be better and she feels that Vanya is owed the same chance.
Vanya and Allison need each other and there brothers if they are going to fix this, fix themselves, to keep a simple promise they need to make to one another and themselves.
we need to try and be better.
and that is how Allison is one of the main hero’s of the show (for me anyway). she shows change in action, the mistakes and the learning curve that takes. The strength to look at yourself and say you did horrible things now it’s time to change. You can’t change what you did but you can be better. You can rebuild your relationship with your family it’s going to take work anger and pain but you can start again if you both want to.
and that’s how this chapter ends
with them having another chance (as kids) to do better by each other. If they can do it is something else all together. The love is there they just need the understanding.
that’s how the girl who wanted attention saved the world by paying attention.

How Melissa Benoist got ripped for Supergirl
She's not a bird or a plane, and she's definitely not Superman! In 2015, Krypton refugee Kara Zor-El — aka Kara Danvers — threw aside her glasses and donned her family's S-shaped crest to follow in her cousin's footsteps and give National City its very own superhero on the CW's Supergirl. Back then, Melissa Benoist — the actress playing both Supergirl the superpowered alien and Kara the shy personal assistant — was best known to TV fans for her role as sweet newcomer Marley Rose on two seasons of Glee, and she also had a small role in Best Picture-nominated Whiplash.
Taking the lead of a show — especially one with such a strong legacy on-screen and off — was a big step up for Benoist, both performance-wise and also physically. So how did she get ripped for the role? Well, Benoist said that landing the part meant stepping up her workouts, not just because we tend to take our superheroes with six-pack abs and toned biceps, but so that she could keep up with the action. The self-described pacifist and musical theater nerd suddenly found herself learning how to throw a punch and how to fly. So here's how Melissa Benoist toughened up to play Supergirl, at the gym, in her fight scenes, and high up on the wires.
She made it through a full-on audition process
Obviously the CW couldn't cast just anyone as Supergirl, which meant that Melissa Benoist had to go through a rigorous audition process before she got anywhere close to landing the role. The wait was made even more excruciating because, according to Benoist, "I believe I was the first girl they saw." That first audition was in October 2014, and it was just the start. In 2015, she told Entertainment Weekly, "It was a long, drawn-out, three-month process. I auditioned around Halloween 2014 and then didn't land the part until February 2015. I went through multiple screen-tests, multiple auditions with the producing team. There was a lot."
During that extensive audition process, Variety reported that Benoist found a champion in producer Greg Berlanti. "Greg championed me the whole time and was in my corner," Benoist remembered. "Even when I didn't think the part was mine, he was always rooting for me. That support goes a long way, especially when I'm fighting for something I want so badly. His belief in me really touched me." Berlanti echoed the sentiment, saying, "If we had not found her, I would have said, 'I don't want to make this.'"
The first episode aired almost a year after that first audition, on October 26, 2015, and since then, Benoist has seen hundreds of kids in their own versions of her costume. "Every Halloween there are quite a bit of Supergirls," she told Jimmy Kimmel, so it was worth the wait.
Melissa Benoist worked on her core strength
While comic book titans DC and Marvel have both made noise about introducing more diversity to their products, one thing that all superheroes have in common are incredible abs. Benoist's Supergirl is no exception. She told Entertainment Weekly that to prepare for the role, she did "some boxing, strength training, and a lot of core work." At Comic-Con, she said that her workouts included Pilates, boxing, and plyometrics.
If you've never had cause to get into superhero shape, you might be wondering what fresh hell plyometrics are. As Healthine explains, plyometrics involve exerting your body to its maximum ability for a short period of time — for example, by jumping — to improve strength, speed, and power. They're a pretty advanced form of exercise, as Benoist found out! On CBS's This Morning, she explained, "I did quite a bit of training. We did this stuff called plyometrics, which is like jump training. And all of it was really hard — just hard things!"
And the core work isn't just to look good. As Benoist added, the core work comes in handy when you're doing the flying stunts. "I'm up on a wire," she said, "and you have to hold your entire body weight so there's a lot of training involved."
Work is a workout on Supergirl
Melissa Benoist wasn't the only cast member who had to up her workout intensity to give the action sequences the effort they deserved. Chyler Leigh, who plays Kara's adoptive sister Alex, said that the actors work really hard with the stunt coordinators to get the fight scenes just right. And those action-packed days are full-on workouts in their own right. "When we do fight scenes, we're working out for six hours, just doing the same thing," she told CBS. "We are burnt for the next few days. I think that's really where I get my caloric burn count."
Even when they aren't shooting, Leigh and Benoist try to use those periods of waiting around that happen on the set of a TV show to stay in shape. "Melissa and I try to do as much as we possibly can," Leigh said. "In my trailer, I've got resistance bands and medicine balls and things like that. I try to do it in between, but we have very little downtime." The two on-screen sisters also have a shared interest in the same workout. "I love Pilates," Leigh told CBS. "It gives such a good core foundation. When I can go, it's awesome." And you thought TV sets were all craft services and hanging out in trailers.
Melissa Benoist learned to fight from the best
Thos Robinson/Getty Images Another crucial element of being a superhero is being able to kick butt convincingly. This didn't come naturally to Benoist, who confessed to the Chicago Tribune, "I had never punched anyone! I maybe slapped my sisters when I was a kid, but I'm not an aggressive, violent person, and I had no idea how to throw a punch." To help her find her inner fighter, Benoist took up boxing. "I definitely had to learn technique. Like how to actually punch someone and not hurt yourself more than you're hurting the person you're punching. And so boxing was part of it," she told InStyle.
Fortunately for Benoist, she had access to excellent tutors. In addition to the stunt team, former karate and kickboxing world champion Lexi Alexander (pictured above) directed an episode in the first season. Having worked on Supergirl's fellow Arrowverse show Arrow, Alexander said she was excited to work on a story about a female superhero. "I realized that this is the first time I'm choreographing and directing a fight scene for a female lead. I did some fight directing for a woman here and there … but for a female lead? I've never directed a female lead in an action," she told Den of Geek.
Her directing stint was short, but Alexander said that she pushed her star "to the next level of fight choreography," and that "they've now changed [Benoist's] fight style from [Alexander's] episode onward." Benoist might still be more lover than fighter at heart, but we wouldn't challenge her.
She does (some of) her own stunts on Supergirl
Believe it or not, it really is Benoist doing some of those hair-raising stunts on the show. The actress told Variety that she likes to get involved with the action when she can, saying, "I have been doing a lot [of stunts], and I want to keep doing them. Already I've fought a male on the show. Supergirl's fight moves are boxing. She's really heavy-handed. There's some flying that involves kicking and punching mid-flight that's kind of awesome."
However, not everyone was thrilled with Benoist's hands-on approach to fights. Her mom, Julie, told her that she found it difficult to watch her daughter's fight scenes, especially against men. But Julie Benoist needn't have worried. Benoist knows her limits, and she's heaped praise on her stunt doubles. In 2015, she said of stunts, "I think they're so fun. There are some that I just can't — I really could get injured. … My stunt double is amazing. She was Jen Garner's on Alias and Buffy's. She's all over the place, and she's so cool. I wish people could see what they go through. It's insane."
Benoist's stunt double in 2015 was Shauna Duggins, whose resume includes Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the recent Star Trek movies, and 2000's Charlie's Angels (as well as many other movies and shows.) After doing 20 episodes of Supergirl, Duggins went on to work as stunt coordinator for shows including Ray Donovan, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and GLOW. She's a real-life superwoman.
She likes to get out of the gym
Although Benoist diligently puts in her hours in the gym, the Colorado-raised actress is happier getting her exercise in the great outdoors. Her Instagram shows photos of her hiking with her husband (and Supergirl co-star), Chris Wood, and their dogs, Farley and Drift. She also recalled being jealous when she found out what her co-star and Supergirl predecessor, Helen Slater, was doing to get in shape.
After Benoist recounted the boxing and core work she was doing to Slater, "She gave me this look, and I was like, 'Why, what did they have you do?'" Benoist told Entertainment Weekly. "'Oh, I went horseback riding, and fencing and doing some archery, and I was swimming.' She went through this whole gamut of awesome outdoor activities that I would love to do to train." Speaking to E! Online, Benoist said of Slater's exercise regime, "She was on trampolines a lot and dancing and prancing and doing all these cool activities for training. I wish I had that much fun."
The conflicting training schedules aren't coming between the two actresses. Benoist added to EW, "Also, she's just so kind and such a sweet, sweet woman. That's really what I've learned from her. She really is a super girl. I'm so honored that I'm following in her footsteps." She'll just have to wait for a filming break to take a hike.
Melissa Benoist has a dance background
Glee was not Benoist's first experience with musical theater. She told Jimmy Kimmel that she did "tap, ballet, and jazz class at four years old" and children's theater, even performing at Disneyland. "In front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle, we sang a Stephen Sondheim medley where my solo was 'Send in the Clowns,'" she recalled. She also studied ballet, although she wasn't a perfect student. "All the years I took ballet class … I was the one kid in class who the teacher was always like, 'Urgh, her turn-out,' and, 'She is not standing up straight,'" Benoist told Kimmel. She did better with another form of dance. In a video for Glamour, she said, "I have a secret superpower — that I can tap dance," and she demonstrated to prove her point.
That dance training comes in handy on the set of Supergirl — and not just for Benoist's part in the musical crossover episode of The Flash. Benoist said that her dance background helps her with the wire work and even the fight sequences. "With the wire work and flying, even the choreography, I grew up dancing, so that kind of came like it would if I were learning a dance routine," she told the Chicago Tribune. Plus, it keeps her and the crew entertained between takes.
She learned how to fly (well, on wires)
Melissa Benoist's favorite thing about her superhero role is exactly what you'd expect: the chance to fly. When Jimmy Kimmel asked about the best part of playing Supergirl, Benoist said, "I mean, I get to fly!" Upon further questioning, she acknowledged, "I mean it's hard work, I'm essentially attached to a fork in the air." She also told Variety just how hard it was and how she prepared, saying, "The wire work for training is mostly core work. It's mostly ab-centric — the whole area of the body that nobody wants to work out. You have to get strong. You have to carry your whole body weight when you're up in the air."
However, it's worth all the working out. "The wire work is really difficult, but so fun. And when you get it right, watching the result is exhilarating," Benoist told People. "It's a really, really cool feeling to know what it felt like, the energy I had to exert to create those flying scenes. And then the way they look is really rewarding."
Benoist got some help perfecting her flying technique. When Kimmel asked how she figured out Supergirl's flying style, she said, "There's this sort of superhero physicality school that you kind of have to go to — at least we did on the DC shows — where the stunt team will teach you to walk like a superhero. … They're awesome and they've really helped me." And that's how to look fly in spandex.
Benoist eats healthy, but she's not a dieter
All of that working out and on-set action builds up an appetite. But as a female superhero who's expected to squeeze into a spandex suit every day and have the muscles to beat up bad guys without actually looking bulked up, Benoist can't go to town on craft services. Fortunately, she's pretty into fruits and vegetables anyway. "I love supermarkets, I love grocery shopping, I love the produce aisle, because to be super you have to be healthy," she told Glamour. "And I would probably stock up on all the fruits. I love fruit."
However, she isn't about to totally deprive herself of comfort foods. In the same Glamour interview, she said, "If I could supersize any food it would be [an] ice cream Drumstick, vanilla caramel. They're so good." In 2016, she told the Chicago Tribune that she was excited to attend that year's Chicago Comic-Con and Entertainment Expo (aka C2E2) because she wanted to check out the city's restaurants. As she explained, "I've heard the food scene is incredible, and I'm a foodie, so I can't wait to go out and eat."
Benoist also said that her own partiality to the occasional junk food splurge inspired the writers to add it into her character's personality. "I love junk food, I love doughnuts, and they put that in there quite a bit," she said, laughing. "There are these doughnuts all the time." This diet sounds super.
She got ripped to show women being tough
Kevin Winter/Getty Images One reason Melissa Benoist was so invested in making sure her character could be physically impressive was because she wanted to inspire other women to feel strong and powerful. In an essay for Time, she wrote, "I think the more the show goes on, the more you see this fierceness and what women are really capable of. It puts [Supergirl] on this equal playing field. … That's so meaningful to me to help children understand that girls can have just as much fun as their male counterparts in the superhero world. It's about confidence and hope, and Supergirl really embodies all of that."
Even though Benoist also wrote that she grew up in "this really strong, feminine family," she told the Chicago Tribune, "I didn't really believe that I could be that character or play a superhero. It's something I never thought of myself as doing, but I just knew I had to go for it because there's so few female superheroes and just strong females that fight back and do it with grace and do it with love." She's also said that she didn't want the character to be a female version of male superheroes, saying, "What I think is cool is to try to bring kind of a femininity to her strength. … I do like the idea of bringing in like a grace to it. And a fluidity and kind of this femininity to flying. It's fun." In other words, Melissa Benoist is out here bringing new meaning to (Super)girl power.
