Me, 4 years ago: Boy, I sure love the song "Guitar Hero" by Amanda Palmer! But I can never clearly hear what it is she shouts in this one segment - I'll just look it up real quick!
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
[it was the n-word]
#original#amanda palmer#dresden dolls#and that's why I can pinpoint the exact moment in time I stopped looking up to Amanda Palmer#she's a white lady there is no excuse. cartoonishly 'white feminism' nonsense.#it is additionally bizarre bc it has nothing to do with the song. like there's nothing she could have done to justify it but it's#so nakedly just for flavor. racist racist flavor. i was fucking horrified#it is one thing to make art exploiting your own trauma but to be white and to exploit black trauma in your art is such fucking garbage#like I don't think that when someone makes tasteless art about abuse we should demand that they out themselves as an abuse survivor#but something fuckin tells me Amanda Palmer has never experienced anti Black racism#and it's really hard to give her the benefit of the doubt that she's approaching art about other people's trauma in good faith + w/ respect#when she clearly thought this was just... funny? cool? i have no idea what. i mean talk about losing a role model in 5 seconds flat!#imagine being white and saying the n word and then recording yourself in a song saying it and releasing a music video for that song#at least the other racists have a good sense not to record themselves saying it Jesus Christ what a stupid thing to do#how often are you using that word that you felt like it was time to put it in a music video?? I often have trouble hearing lyrics#but usually i work them out from context clues. I never caught this one bc it has no context#and bc I truly believed she was better than that so it never even occurred to me. like all of her edgy artsy bullshit was not fun anymore

I am convinced Wish straight up stole the story from the Stardust episode in Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire. How so?
-A gathering ceremony of a man called the Oracle granting “destinies” to people that become of age
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Setting is set in a North African region (Egypt most likely) and the MC(Nawara) is most likely Amazigh. This is based on her design, and what I’ve seen Amazigh people tend to wear-take my words with a grain of salt. But even if that is not the case, Nawara’s design shares similarities with Asha’s concept art
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Similar tower observatory structure because the Oracle, like Magnifico, look into astrology for their source of power
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-An MC that approaches the Oracle for the intention for her own ambitions being granted
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-The MC feels wronged when denied their wishes/destinies, and plans to steal them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-There is great emphasis on a fallen Star. Stars in general, but mainly this particular “wishing Star”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-She becomes the apprentice of the Oracle(he’s not actually a villain, but alluded to be). Hey Remember when Asha applied to be an assistant, and that was never explored on what they do?
Tumblr media
-The story is essentially telling you that you can make your own wishes/destinies come true
-Literally has Nawara end the short saying “nothing but this!” (Look at lyrics of This Wish)
Taking into account that Kizazi Moto is region locked with Disney+ (I don’t think most African countries can even watch it), and that Disney barely advertised the show, I would not be surprised they scrapped everything they originally had, just to poorly mimic this story. There are just way too many similarities between these two for it all to be a coincidence
Kizazi Moto has been in development for years btw, so yes it is possible for Disney to steal aspects of the premise for Wish
It would explain why Wish’s characters and plot barely get any development and just feel empty. This one short was able to immerse us in a finished world building perspective. The city in Stardust actually feels magical, and the MC changes by the end of the story. Feel like the reason Wish failed in these aspects is partly because they tried to mimic Stardust, but divorced it from its own lore and context. And so you just have a movie of nothing
Disney has always had a habit of stealing works from others to make profit. Remember when they tried to copyright Hakuna Matata?
I’m already mad they hardly advertised Kizazi Moto to begin with, but now I am more mad at the fact that an 8 min short did Wish better in every aspect, and it’s probably because Wish stole these concepts from African animators like Ahmed Teliab(directed and written Stardust)
And there are other cool episodes in Generation Fire, I would appreciate y’all checking out. African animators and writers hardly get any recognition for their talents.
Even if Wish really didn’t steal this episode’s concepts, again, Stardust does everything better than Wish in every way
Conclusion: Go watch Kizazi Moto, but yknow pirate it. They don’t even show the series in African countries anyways. You might as well look into their works, and support them. The company supporting a genocide with some of those African countries, ain’t going to care about them

I had this ongoing thought about Vesper lately.
What if we made a song for him but instead of lyrics it's just the sound of people moaning with some instruments in the background.
I don't know if anyone else agrees with me but the sound a person makes when they are pleasured is the most beautiful thing to me. I don't think there is a word in the english vocabulary that i could use to describe my infatuation with the sounds, a thing to not is that I'm not talking about the fake moans porn stars make for the audience, I'm talking about sounds of true pleasure, the rapid breathing, the chocked breaths, the gasps, the moans, the groans, the unintelligible babbling, the begging, hell even the moment silence someone has during an orgasm before letting out a shaky sigh. I think it's the most gorgeous sound in existence, one that is worthy of being produced into a song.
If I knew how to make one I already would have, but let's just pretend for the sake of this ask that I already did and gave it to Vesper as like an anniversary gift or something.
(Sorry for an any errors)
[There's nothing like a shaky sigh at the first hints of real pleasure, I do love that sound too.]
You can have conversations about this with Vesper for hours. Genuine hours.
He'll tell you about the noises he prefers to hear from others and explain why some are as valuable as they are, especially when context can be gleamed off them. The sounds of carnality are music to him, in their own way. The molding of bodies and the cries of differing stimulus are art to the population of Lust, and Vesper is no different.
His tail will not stop swatting before you even put the track on, and it won't either while it's playing. He's genuinely getting emotional about it, which is admittedly a weird sight- Giant demonlord crying while weirdly rhythmic erotic vocalizations are playing...
If, by some chance, there's even just a smidge of your vocals in there, Vesper will identify them, and grin even wider as he points out that's you, his favorite.
He definitely wants more people to listen, so be ready to have this all but broadcasted everywhere.

I saw when you said you liked lyric analysis so here is: My rant on why I think Demolition lovers by MCR is one of the most skk coded songs ever
Fyi I'm putting the lyrics in italics
Hand in my, into your icy blues
-chuuya has blue eyes (sometimes ig)
And then I'd say to you “we could take to the highway. With this trunk of ammunition too”
Motorbikes do sometimes have a small trunk at the back, and it be being filled with “ammunition” but no guns makes sense as Chuuya can use gravity manipulation on them like that scene with the helicopter
I'd end my days with you in a hail of bullets
Dazai is suicidal but honestly my take on things that he really doesn't want to die alone, and in that context of the story imo if one of them dies the both die in one way or another
I'm trying, I'm trying
To let you know how much you mean to me
In their own twisted way they do care for each other
And after all the things we put each other through
And I would drive on to the end with you
They have put each other through hell, especially Dazai to Chuuya but like I said, the way they care for each other is twisted
A liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full
Being for real they both have issues with alcohol
And I feel like there’s nothing left to do but prove myself to you, and we'll keep it running
They are both kinda petty and don't like losing, especially to each other but I feel like it goes deeper than that.
They both want to “prove” themselves to each other, because at heart I think they are too incredibly insecure people trying to love each other
All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this
They have both time and time again being used as pawns in other people's fights, that what the pm dose, no one cares about them accept each other
You're the only one
Like a bed of rose's
There's a dozen reasons in this gun
I mean, have you seen this official art
Tumblr media
Also Chuuya literally shoots Dazai, I know it was the plan and whatever but still
And as we're touching hands, and as we're falling down
Cough cough I'm looking at you dead apple
Tumblr media
I'll meet your eyes, I mean this forever
Firstly, they make way too much eye homosexual eye contact and secondly
They are forever, in every universe forever in one way or another
And that concludes my very gay rant
OMG SKK SONG ANALYSIS??????? THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WAS SUCH A JOY TO READ THIS FITS THEM SO WELL😭😭😭

hi! wanted to ask a few people this: since wembley is in 2 weeks, do you have any predictions on what might happen, or do you think sleep token will do anything special?
Hey Anon! Ty for the ask (and I'm also super sorry if I'm the last person to answer). I have a few predictions for the Wembley Ritual, yeah, mostly what I’ve heard from other fans, though. I think the majority of these were already listed by others, but here are my predictions in order of least likely to most likely:
Sleep Token will unmask I honestly never see them unmasking, at least not on stage. There may be identity acknowledgement at some point, since it’s getting harder and harder for fans to dodge that information, but I don’t think we will ever see Sleep Token live on stage performing without their masks, especially at Wembley. It would go against the “separation of art from the artist” viewpoint that Vessel and the band have.
Vessel will speak I don’t think Vessel will directly address the audience for similar reasons that I mentioned above. The focus is on Sleep Token’s music, not on the people performing it.
The ritual will be professionally recorded/live streamed The band has strict photography rules and employs their own photographer for a reason. Also I'm 95% certain that their photographer had said in a TikTok live several weeks back that the band did not want their rituals professionally recorded. (If I'm remembering that incorrectly or if that statement is out of context, please let me know, I don't have TT and didn't watch that live)
Hozier will be present Not saying it’ll be a collab/duet, but... Hozier is playing the same venue on December 15th sooo it’s possible he might be spotted watching Sleep Token (like Will Ramos was at BRRF 2023).
A new AI-voice message will be played for the audience I’m not sure what it would say, but they’ve played messages for fans all last September/October as well as important ritual dates like the 2021 Heavy Music Awards and the Room Below ritual.
Vessel will confuse the lyrics on Aqua Regia 🎵🎶No wonder my arms are still ringing 🎶🎵 (I can’t be the only person who loves when this happens, right? I just think it’s endearing)
It will be a regular show As much as it sucks, this might just be a ritual with nothing spectacularly out of the ordinary. Even if this is the case, it’s still going to be an amazing experience for all 12.5k fans in attendance, and all other fans who will live vicariously through their recordings on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
Sleep Token will play Take Me Back to Eden and/or Euclid live for the first time It’s gonna happen. It might actually happen during one of the Germany rituals, but it will definitely happen this year (if they don’t I will be so disappointed, like you have no idea)

Analysis #1: Bladee's Requiem
An analysis of Bladee's Requiem: a single comprising two songs, Requiem and Obsessed with Death.
Requiem and Obsessed with Death are the two songs released under Bladee’s recent single, titled “Requiem”. Considering their status as a single, it was expected that they would sound similar to one another or that they would revolve around the same subject matter. And they do both speak to the same subject – though it is not entirely evident at first. Regarding their sound, they are quite different. Requiem has the clear, distinct Bladee style, whereas Obsessed with Death – while still very clearly Bladee – moves in a different direction, and stands out from the rest of Bladee’s discography, where it has clear gothic influences. And yet, the two songs feel like two sides to a coin. The exploration of both sides, the embracing of duality, and the unboundedness of Bladee are some of the highly respected qualities of the artist and make his work an undeniably unique experience.
Again, the two songs are very different – their lyrics, melody, etc., but it’s super cool that their linking tie is death and the idea of death. Obsessed with Death states this clearly in the title, Requiem too. Requiem – meaning a mass for the dead – is a Catholic Christian ceremony performed to grant the dead eternal rest. Obsessed with Death could be seen as the chasing and desire for this eternal calm.
Looking at the lyrics, Requiem takes a much more positive view of death, where the discussion of “memento mori”, “we’re victorious, I am very fortunate” (nice reference to his song Victorious with lean as well lol, where they discuss being fortunate + victorious even though they have faced much turmoil) “very blessed by Elohim” (the name for God in biblical Hebrew), etc. The song takes an almost absurdist outlook with “Trauma ties the bond in an unbreakable knot/The door behind is locked, we forever fall apart”. Bladee’s statements sustain that this route is undeniable, that the past is something you cannot escape nor return to, and that the future is set. And while this may seem very depressive, the context of the song allows these lyrics to become more absurdist rather than nihilistic.
“Love should be like war, and this war must be like art” references the H.L. Mencken quote “Love is like war: easy to begin but very hard to stop”, to say that love should be a powerful force, and not just that, but it “must” – it is a requirement – that it be like art, encapsulating beauty and creativity, otherwise, it is not love.
“Victory is ours, written in the stars”, again, the positive outlook is made clear, victory is his God-given right, it is his fate, and has been his fate since the birth of the stars. This line reiterates the idea that the future is set, as stated previously.
“Life is on the line, purpose beyond time” truly speaks to me on a personal level. “Purpose beyond time” is undeniably beautiful. Too many people arrive on this earth wondering what their purpose is, why they have been sent here – and not just wondering – but looking, searching for their purpose, thinking, believing it is an essential part of who they must be and an integral part of life itself. But it is not. Purpose is irrelevant, and not just that, but it is not limited to this earth. Purpose may find you in another lifetime. If at all. And there is nothing the matter with you. “Life is on the line” could be interpreted as a lifeline. A purpose is sometimes made to be a person’s lifeline. It is often thought that without a purpose, you are unimportant and unneeded. Hence, your life is on the line when you believe that a purpose will be enough to sustain you.
Looking at Obsessed with Death, the song has a much darker outlook. Requiem discussed “very blessed by Elohim”, while obsessed with death discusses evil and sin. Truly two sides of a coin. “The city's evil lights, like evil eyes/Like ice, I'm cold, I'm cold, I'm cold (I'm cold, I froze)”, the personification of the city - which is likely a reference to society in general - brings it to life, furthering the dreadful tone. The cold, dead eyes of the city cause Bladee to be physically cold, and the “I froze” could be interpreted as either that the coldness of the city has caused him to become emotionally cold and distant, or that the corrupt attitude of the city has entirely overpowered him, and he is frozen in place, unknowing of how to react, or even that he is dead, physically frozen.
“And it's like it demands life, it demands life/To die, to die, to die tonight/To die tonight, a sacrifice/A sanctioned kill”. This lyric is spectacular. The diction “demands” is very striking. That it demands life. It is truly weird if you think about it. This idea could be applied to God as well. That god demanded life of us. The allusion to God would not be unusual in a Bladee song, but in this context, it seems to be to sacrifice. Sacrifice demands life, and it’s “sanctioned”. Someone or something demands life, and most likely Bladee’s life in particular. This could be interpreted as general dislikers of Bladee attempting to pull him down, or even as something such as a deal with the devil, which would further the duality previously discussed of Requiem speaking on blessedness and God, and Obsessed with Death communicating evil and sin. Additionally, the imagery of death links back to the idea that “I froze” could mean death, and the cold that overtakes one's body in death.
“The buildings commit, it slits your wrist, you cease to exist/You feel nothing, you feel nothing, you feel nothing/The curtains are ripped, the cranium split, and in the blood spill/A temple is built, a tower of guilt, a tower of sin”. The use of imagery in these lines and Bladee’s delivery of these lines are beautiful, genuinely poetic. He furthers the personification, the buildings come to life, “it slits your wrist”, the ambiguity of this line furthers the dark tone of the song. Do the buildings slit your wrist? Or is this something you do to yourself? This method is generally one of suicide and is referenced in a previously released Bladee song Wrist Cry, though it could also be interpreted as both – the cold, evil city pushes him to the edge, and he commits. But delegating to the buildings the blame of the committing of the actual act is very powerful. To not take responsibility for your own suicide. The actual act of it. A very strong line. Next, “cease to exist/You feel nothing”, when you die is it over? This seems to imply so, especially with the repetition, but revisiting Requiem, “purpose beyond time” tells us differently, reinforcing the duality between the songs.
“The curtains are ripped, the cranium split, and in the blood spill/A temple is built, a tower of guilt, a tower of sin”. The imagery of the curtains being ripped reminds of a theater - when the curtains open to indicate the beginning of a show. But here, the curtains are “ripped”. This is a lot more violent, as though someone has been forced to perform before their time, and before they were ready. “The cranium split, and in the blood spill a temple is built”, to have the brutal imagery of a split cranium and a blood spill, right next to a temple – a sacred place, a place of worship – is crazy. It emphasizes the viciousness and the sinfulness. And these images have not just been placed next to one another, but the temple arises from within the blood, built on it. Does goodness come out of bad? Or is it a guise? A guise of goodness that capitalizes off of a bad situation, makes it seem pretty, to be more digestible to the public? Bladee furthers this imagery, “a tower of guilt, a tower of sin”, it is inferable that this is the capitalization of a bad situation – and not positively where you see the silver lining, but in a way where evil benefits off of a good person’s bad situations, leaving goodness in the dust. The tower – it's of guilt, but it goes beyond that, it's of sin. It is made of sin. It seems as though the guilt simply passes through, it is not there to stay, it’s a fleeting feeling that is quickly dismissed, to make space for further sin. Additionally, the negative connotations of a tower – a tall, spindly building, beginning in hell and reaching for the heavens in the sky.
Bladee then goes on to say “Destruction, desolation/Desperation, despair []/Destination nowhere”, the alliteration of the letter “d” creates hard, plosive sounds, where the abruptness emphasizes each word, furthering the eerie mood of the song. This all works to reinforce the ideas of evil and sin, and by ending the lyric with “destination nowhere”, ending it with a single word that fails to fall into the alliteration, “nowhere” holds a lot of power. Additionally, it is a beautiful line, as though you’re running with no direction, you just need to get far away. The whole song feels like a dark, thunderous, rainy night, where the only hints of light come from the intermittent flashes of lightning. There is some irony in that as well. That the only sense of reassurance emanates from someplace frightening.
And of course, it’s Bladee, so he must bring in and end on, “Yes, I must confess, (I want your flesh)” – cannibalism as a metaphor for love. Though it may not necessarily be love this time. It could also be him taking on the perspective of the city. But why does the city want him dead? And specifically him? What is it that he has? Or is it a generalization?

Song Pic Saying Tag Game
Thank you to @vacantgodling for tagging me!
Rules: Pick an OC and post a song you relate to them, an image that represents them in some way (aesthetic, picrew, art, etc), and a quote of dialogue or narration from them. Totally feel free to expand and explain!
This got long so I'll do the tagging right up front: @duelistkingdom @liv-is @hallwriteblr @mjjune @zeenimf and anyone else who wants to!
I have the perfect combo for this in the form of Justice, everyone's favorite emotionally conflicted angel
Song
For non-Spotify users, here is a Youtube link to Songbirds by Ben Thornewill, and just the lyrics if you don't feel like listening to audio.
I picked this song for Justice because throughout the story he struggles with his perfectionism, a sort of "holy imposter syndrome" (i.e. not being good enough of an angel), and a crisis of faith once Heaven has made clear he's no longer welcome. He's still loyal to God, he wants to continue being an angel and do what he's been created for (serving humanity and being a literal embodiment of justice), but now he's been told he doesn't belong. And on Earth, he's the "songbird in the city air" as mentioned in the song. He feels like he's never going to "make it" -- never be good enough to get in Heaven's good graces again. He has a stubborn sense of morality and refuses to compromise on his ideals, which is exactly the thing they rejected in him. He starts to realize... maybe they were right. He doesn't belong. Obviously that's a bit of a downer for him.
When it comes to "playing the part," he still acts the part of an angel even though he's as close to being a fallen angel as he can be while keeping his wings attached. Being able to literal sense human pain and suffering, he is programmed by God to help every person on the street no matter what. And despite doing this, he doesn't really get the sense he's actually materially helping, at all. No matter how many problems he solves, there's never a dip in the grand scheme of things. He cares so deeply that it hurts, and despite his estrangement from Heaven, he's more than willing to bend over backwards for humanity, doing whatever anyone needs. To his own detriment, sometimes.
In a way, he doesn't really belong anywhere anymore. Not in Heaven, not in Hell, not on Earth. He's in a perfect in-between, everywhere he goes. Like a bird in the city.
Pic
Tumblr media
This art was a commission from @auroblaze and also directly inspired by the song above!
We can get the obvious symbolism out of the way right now - Justice, large wings, sitting and watching some birds, who are flying merrily into the sky. Free to go wherever they please, while Justice can't. He's kept all the holy signifiers, his wings and halo, but is unable to use them the way he wants to. He's up high, closer to Heaven, but will never be able to reach as high as the birds can.
Also please take note of the grandma sweater. That has nothing to do with this symbolism, but it is a very important part of his character.
Saying
Okay so. Most of these thoughts are in my head instead of on the page, but there is ONE I can use.
Context: Justice invites Pride to a church event and when they get home, they have this conversation.
“I know, I guess I…” Justice leaned against the wall, brow furrowed. “I was trying to prove something to myself.” “Like what?” He didn’t answer right away, picking at his nails. “I know you don’t want a relationship with God,” he said, slow and deliberate, “and that’s fine. I would never ask you to. But I don’t think that means you have to be abandoned by me—by us. We can still get along, we don’t have to be separate to coexist. Does that make sense?”
Justice is both trying to prove to himself that Pride's demon status doesn't preclude him being able to hang out with humans (and at least one angel) in a civil way, and in turn that the eternally suffering that God prescribes for sinners to be illegitimate. Justice, deeply faithful even after being thrown out by Heaven, feels like it's wrong for him to be cast out, but for his many thousands of years of life, he's been told demons deserve it. If that's wrong too... maybe all of it's wrong.
And also he invited Pride because Justice liiiiikes himmmmmm~~~~

yes this is the dante theory list for those who liked this post but im also making it my pinned
First; Hi, I'm Md (they/it/she) and welcome to my autism hole. Boops you. HERE is my art blog, HERE is my eldritch sideblog, HERE is my berserkerlot sideblog, and HERE is my photoblog, HERE is my AO3, HERE is my Flight Rising, HERE is my BlueSky. Okay, now back to the actual post.
Md's hot hot list of Dante limbus theories that I've been sitting on since I started playing
ONE OF THESE WILL BE RIGHT. MAYBE. cut for length. discuss in the comments. contains ruina and lobocorp spoilers. maybe even leviathan spoilers. assume spoilers for the newest content. pinning so i can keep adding to it in the future. (edited 4/7) (up to canto 6.3)
Theory 1, from early march 2023- Dante has the option to get their head back, takes it. Human Dante is shown. except clearly hiding unfamiliarity with the sinners. The clock head is still alive. A clock doesnt need a body to live. Human evil dante uses the golden whatever to cause Problems and has the sinners chained to them. vergil is free tho so he can beat down evil dante. (this now works with a canto 5 tidbit where vergil said he'd only step in if "all sinners dead, dante is beaten, and the hands of the clock are about to be torn off".)
T2, 3/12- 9 circles of hell, Dante, and a few subsections. Dante is sinner 10. Charon is also in the divine comedy so she'll get a section. Dante are u lucifer. who is the lucifer of the setting?? i'm saying pre-dante Dante until otherwise noted. (not personally fond of this one)
T3, 3/15- iori saw limbus going a certain way and guaranteed it by making sure Dante got factory reset by force. villain to cause heroism. (dont know enough about Iori for this one)
**T4- Backwards clock relation possible. (possibly canon validated) (even more possible connection as of 6.3)
T5- Saying Dante had a significant other named Beatrice is way too low bar but It's a necessary one. ech
T6- Dante IS Beatrice and given the name of someone else. (too ez)
T7, 3/17- future Dante guaranteeing the future changes by getting past Dante's head removed. issue solved. This one is based on the opening and reading the lyrics real goodly.
T8, 3/20- Dante's head has a lil bit of angelas ai in there. or ayin data. benjamin. any of them. carmen even. fuck whatever. maybe hokma bc ticking in ruina theme. (this one lead to some Better Ideas. see later) (4/7) POSSIBLY SUPPORTED BY 6.2. WHY DID THEY SEE THAT.
T9, 3/23- The three censored letters. B E A, S I N, E G O, A L I, who knows. v e r. could be anything this one is nothing
T10, 3/26- Faust VERY SPECIFICALLY says that brains cant be replaced-- so even if Dante gets their head back, it's incompatible now. (!! this is a Top Theory)
T11, 3/28- Beatrice or someone else died around Christmas, which makes Dante sad even without their memories. The pain exists but the context is missing. (They also seem to know Christmas music without any issue, able to sing along with Charon in their head. This is not addressed in canon.)
T12, 3/30- Beatrice was one of the orphans that died in Leviathan :) the time period matches up. It was around Christmas.
T13, 3/31- HARD LOBOCORP SPOILER. Thinking about In Hell We Live (Lament). "Each loop we live/die thru"? How many times? How many times has Dante done this? Or Pre-Dante, anyway. Faust is probably in on it. The new L corp took one look at what Ayin was doing and went "we can do that too lmao". Losing their memory was a base requirement to prevent madness. I rewrote this theory on 9/19 but added "to prevent a paradox"
T14, 4/18- Less a HC and more a suggestion, just use F Corp's shit to Unlock Dante's memory. If we ever visit District F, you KNOW Faust is gonna keep them on one hell of a tight leash.
T15- Is the Star a Singularity? Did Dante STEAL it? Are THEY the singularity? The clock? This one's too easy too though.
T16, 5/8- WAT IF THE STAR IS LUCIFER. MORNING STAR. CAN MANIPULATE SOULS IN HELL. (weak but proj moon loves their Christian imagery. this will come back repeatedly) not this one
T17, 5/10- Dante is either connected to whitenight OR a jesus figure (12 apostles, sin, not dying when killed, revives people, etc. the christianity again. it will continue. i already drew plague doc dante.) (4/7, possible but carmen is the lucifer adjacent if 6-34 is anything to go by. jesus is still open.)
**T18. 5/16- Dante's clock hands are made from a Golden Bough. ez. LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO canto 5.2
Tumblr media
T19. 6/16- This has 0 canon basis but what if Dante was a Bloodfiend, would that be cool or what? They already don't need to eat, but is that from the clock or something else? Do they get IVs with nutrients? How does this work? Idk. I just want Dante to cut their hand open, make giant claws and rip a man apart before eating dirt. Dante can chew on a Sinner as a treat. c:
T20- Wouldn't it be fucked up if Dante found their head and it had either Distorted or was an Abnormality??
T21, 9/29- Religious Bastard Dieci Dante Aligheri.
T22- Dante has gotten Very Attached to the Sinners as their only form of contact while they've gotten themselves together. They recently realized many Sinners are doing this for the end goals, not to be a team. This seemed to upset them. UPSET THEM MORE. DISTORT THEM. DANTE REALIZES THEY'LL ALL LEAVE WITHOUT A CARE IN THE WORLD. Carmen! Come get this bitch.
T23- Actually, Dante should distort for any reason. I Absolutely Understand the Mechanics (lying). Got too depressed, hit -45 SAN and decided they're just a useless tool instead of a person? Absolutely. You're now a piece of equipment. (when Heath asks if they're okay in canto 5 bc they got injured, dante responds "the clocks fine so who cares?") (I now understand the mechanics but want it anyway) They won't.
T24- Building off the previous, they're really starting to believe they're just a tool like how Gregor thinks he's a bug. That Is Not Good For Your Mental Health (garry ib icon.png)
T25- Putting this here just before my fav one, their skin. We never see it, so a list of potential possibilities excluding Being White bc that's BORING: Any POC, ashy skin (like vergil), dark ashy (charon), pure black or close to (a lot of people do this, me included), dark and covered in stars, very tattooed, very mechanical, just outright a robot, bloodfiend again, ETC. Based on the few images we have that show anything, it's just pitch black under there unless it's a skinsuit. the rest of them may be any of the above but for now most of these are defunct.
Tumblr media
T26- My Current Top Theory of All Time- Dante is an AI. They have never been human, just machine. At least one of their creators cared enough to do better than Ayin ever fucking did, fostering curiosity and a desire to live in the little AI. Thing is, after Angela, AI became Very Illegal. There's no way their creators survived. L Corp New got them. Old AI Dante was, at their core, still an unfeeling machine that made decisions based purely on cold logic. New Dante is a person that is learning and growing, refusing to follow the colder path at times.
Is the clock part of them? Unsure. That can work either way.
But they're definitely becoming a person who doesn't want every encounter to end in bloodshed and death. Good for them. (this part is correct)
T27- Dante is not Ruina Dante. they didn't get booked. I think they'd throw hands on sight.
T28- Verg/Dante that's all glory to yaoiville
**T29- Dante navigator skills IM SO FUCKING HAPPY I WIN FOREVER MOM HOLY FUCK
T30- I missed one! Their eyes with a human head. This has a few that rotate. Red eyes, Gold eyes, Gold with the star, heterochromia with only one gold/star and red, pitch black (pre-d), or night sky/star. mix and match. who cares?
T31- I personally like the idea of Dante being a redhead (real red not ginger like ish) but realize it doesn't make much sense. Black hair works too, esp smoky, but they need more color. maybe fire streaks? if POC, maybe dreads?
T32- I am now also accepting heathcliff/dante post canto 5.1 he care so much.... actually just sinner polycule is valid. so is sinner family. both work. the only part I dont like is dante/faust. doesn't feel right. Charon excluded. that is our child.
T33- Forgot an old one where I figured Dante was a hacker that got into a Lot of trouble and being sinner #10 was meant to be a suicide mission.
T34- Dante being an ai part 2, having been planted in a body. maybe even a body they knew.
T35- another i forgot but dante being all scarred up or stitches or frankensteiny and-- [etc]
T36- Memory loss being fully intentional to kill their previous self and only carry over the necessary. A new start.
T37- Yknow how we never SAW Dante being an upper torso and arm in canto 3? Why? What is being hidden that's so important? robot parts? are you a robot? are you a -
T38- Dante being an artist of any kind. musician, poet, painter, etc. even post amnesia. give em a hobby
T39- Somewhere else I discussed forms that'd be fun for a Dante Distortion but i cant find it so ill reiterate: coffin spider, all around helper clock, useless fucking thing. all of which have gold chains suffocating them and it doesnt fight back. give it morphine
T40- this one's insane but dante's og self being the Player. thats why they were "me" and not "dante" we're not them. but we also are.
T41- This ones a joke but og dantes name actually just being "Me". (but not pronounced that way) (alternatively it was a nickname)
T42- Dante being an interviewer or reporter- A big name one. No wonder they keep secrets like K corps singularity. They can release that publicly later... if they choose to.
T43- RECREATE CARMEN. DO IT PUSSY. That 5.5 Blade scene is Damning as all hell. That or the bough + the monolith had an Interaction.
T44- Dante's internal programming knows the City Lore but Dante isn't allowed to know. The fact so much of that scene was censored...
T45- Dante is Bongbong
T46- I haven't beaten Ruina so I don't know a lot about Constructs or Librarians but like. Maybe they were one of those.
T47- Dante is going to eventually explode (figuratively). Even they can only take so much abuse and bullshit. Self-esteem can only go so low.
T48- Dante being a disaster chimera of stuff. AI made of someone else's brain, in someone else's body, with other stuff installed, etc, etc, etc.
T49- The Star reminds me too much of Blue Star, talking about Sin and such. Maybe it's an abno relating to that. who knows.
T50- Dante is an ID and there's a mirror in their head keeping them active. I hope they do a Charon/Lapis and totally overwrite the og bc the og's an asshole.
T51- Dante's the first successful "new human"
T52- Dante IS fucked up but something in their head hides the fuckedupness from everyone else.

Pick and choose from the following :>
3 for k, 4, 6 for k, 6 for not k, 7, 12, 17, 19, 23, 25
gonna answer the unspecified ones for k as well bc i'm overjoyed about an excuse to choose violence about this (un)dead horse of a fandom over a decade later so thank u :D skipped 4, 19, & 25 bc nothing came to mind or i couldn't remember. rest under cut bc it got long rip
3. screenshot or description of the worst take you’ve seen on tumblr i do not have screenshots of any takes like 11 yrs later but i think everyone who had to put up with me circa 2k12 and the years onwards probably knew it was the whole ~mikoto only cared about one (1) person/thing and everything else was meaningless~ shtick -- the antithesis of which i apparently then made the hill i was gonna die on :)
honourable mention to that one arcade fire lyric being directly attributed to him as a quote as well though. like. what was that
6. which ship fans are the most annoying?
look i am older and wiser than 11 years ago! i will let humans have complexities!!! i am friends with people who ship things i don't ship!!! all ships have rights i suppose!!! it's mktts*
*for legal reasons this is now a joke :')
for non-k...hmmm i remember v*ltron fandom reaching new heights of toxicity i'd never thought possible but i've fortunately eternal sunshined most of that from my memory now!
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
hmm i dont think hate is the right word. i think if anything, fandom 'flattened' how i saw some characters and i had to like sit with my interpretations in more or less a vacuum to figure them out when writing them. misaki and totsuka come to mind for obvious reasons bc they were so often only considered in the context of a ship and i've had to flesh them out in a way that make sense to me for a while. on the flipside, i couldn't stand the vast majority of the fanon takes on fushimi but he is SUCH a fun playground of a character in canon!
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
not unpopular as in disliked but more like overlooked - but i think more people should get obsessed with hidaka like me and then write me super niche hisaru fic!!!!! <3
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
it would be Really Nice if chiaki and i weren't pretty much carrying the mikoizu fandom on our backs :'))) but my running joke has always been that my relationship with that ship is their relationship with each other ie. IT'S ROTTEN WORK / NOT TO ME NOT IF IT'S THEM 😭
also obvs perpetually manifesting the great izumotatara takeover of 2kforever!!! lbr though i'd be delighted about new k content tailored to any of my biases in the year 2k24 (hint hint to anyone reading!)
23. ship you’ve unwillingly come around to
i wouldn't say 'unwillingly' (lol i feel like i'm answering all these questions Wrong) but once i had sufficient time and space, i do think i have much more appreciation for mktts and s*rumi dynamics and their emotional weight without the background noise of all no good very bad fandom takes in the fandom's heyday!

Things said about Copper King: we met on tumblr in 2013 and the first time i heard them sing i knew it was only a matter of time before their music joined the ranks of widely beloved indie classics. it’s been almost a decade since then and that time has yet to come but the amount of growth in their craft has done nothing to deter my certainty that they have whatever “it” factor there is out there found only in stars. their lyricism, their voice, the instrumental parts of each song—i’m not the smartest about music but it’s like everything they do is crafted with magic. their song cavity has been my #1 spotify song every year since it came out and the only thing that’ll ever dethrone it is a song that’s currently only availible on patreon. their voice is like a spell that dissolves anxiety and stress. i saw a video of them performing at a college party once, in a crowded room, conversation ongoing between most of the people there; as soon as they started singing, it’s like the room had been enchanted, nobody able to do anything but pay attention to their performance. also, that’s my best friend in the entire world and i love them so much. (@inncarnate)
Beautiful vocals and interesting composition

Icarus: What IS that awful racket?
HIMBO: MUSIC!
Icarus: ...no. It's not.
SilverVixen: Is it pre-Zero Day music? Or did you somehow manage to record something contemporary?
HIMBO: IT WAS MADE BY A COUPLE PEOPLE WORKING ON A DAM. THE PLACE THAT ENDED UP BEING BANUK TERRITORY.
FlameHairSavior: Yellowstone National Park.
HIMBO: YEAH, I THINK I SAW THAT NAME. ANYWAY, I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE HEARD IT BESIDES THE LADIES WHO MADE IT. THEY USED THE ENTIRE DAM AS AN INSTRUMENT, SO IT'S TOO BAD NO ONE ELSE KNEW ABOUT THEM.
SilverVixen: Oh God, you've discovered indie music.
DIVINER: Oh my Ancestors, you're right!
HIMBO: I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. BUT IT'S NOT MY FAULT YOU GUYS DON'T APPRECIATE TRUE ART.
DIVINER: And he's even a music snob like a true indie fan!!
SilverVixen: I'm tempted to show you some of the classics.
DIVINER: Ummm... does that actually WORK? Or does it just make him a bigger snob?
SilverVixen: Point.
Icarus: Why are you even playing it out loud? You can set it to private easily. In fact, that should be the default.
HIMBO: I WANTED TO SHARE!
ADMIN [Zo]: It's my fault, really. I asked Varl not to smack him for it.
SilverVixen: Spare the rod, spoil the child.
DIVINER: ...that sounds horrible. I mean, if I have the context right.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Makes perfect sense to me.
FlameHairSavior: I'm not sure I want to hear about Tenakth child-rearing techniques.
DIVINER: You don't actually beat your children, do you??
MARSHAL Kotallo: I don't have any children myself. But no, of course not.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Punishment is an important part of any sort of teaching method. No cook is more careful than the one who has cut his hand. You cannot learn to dodge a blow unless someone tries to hit you.
ADMIN [Zo]: I understand the basic principle, though I disagree with any sort of physical retribution.
MARSHAL Kotallo: Not every problem can be solved by waiting three months. Sometimes more immediate consequences are required.
HIMBO: CAN WE NOT TALK ABOUT HITTING ME?
DIVINER: Okaaay...
DIVINER: Sylens, what kind of music do you listen to?
Icarus: Very little. I found some interesting atmospheric melodies, but I mostly use them as background noise, so nothing with lyrics.
FlameHairSavior: Huh, I almost expected you to say you only listened to some weird math thing.
Icarus: Ha ha. There is no "weird math thing" music.
DIVINER: You haven't found Rush????
SilverVixen: Remind me to show you Rush.
SilverVixen: Oh.
DIVINER: [Squee.gif]
FlameHairSavior: Of COURSE there's some weird math thing that Sylens would like.
DIVINER: There's something for everyone! From Norwegian Death Metal to Pop Rap, the old world was full of music!
SilverVixen: Really, it was. I preferred the classics, of course, but sometimes it seemed like every other kid was inventing a new genre.
FlameHairSavior: What do you do in your spare time, Sylens? You can't be plotting and scheming all the time.
Icarus: I prefer to watch documentaries.
FlameHairSavior: Of course.
DIVINER: Wait wait! What kind of documentaries?? Because I doubt you care about, like, the biography of the first president of the United States or whatever??
Icarus: There is a fascinating series called "How it's Made," which are short videos on what were, at the time, ubiquitous parts of daily life. There is a similar series with higher production on the History Channel, though as the name implies, that focuses more on the people and the history.
DIVINER: Oh I love that series!!
DIVINER: But the Quen weren't able to get much useful from it! So much of the data is corrupted! I don't think we have a single video about advanced technology!
Icarus: Unfortunately, I was not able to find much more that was useful. I did find an interesting video on how to build an electric engine, but I lacked the materials to replicate it. Besides, GAIA's machines are superior, and more readily available.
HIMBO: I'M SURE YOU LEARNED A LOT ABOUT HOW TO DISASSEMBLE AND RE-PURPOSE MACHINES FROM IT, THOUGH.
Icarus: That is true.
FlameHairSavior: Wait, if you couldn't get much technology out of this show, why do you like it so much?
FlameHairSavior: What kind of things did you learn from it?
Icarus: ...
Icarus: Cheese.
FlameHairSavior: I'm sorry, did you just say that you like to watch a show about how to make CHEESE?
Icarus: Yes.
DIVINER: Are you EMBARRASSED?
Icarus: I do not see how that is relevant.
HIMBO: LIKE, WHAT, CHEESE FROM A GOAT?
MARSHAL Kotallo: It's not all that complicated.
Icarus: The chemistry is quite fascinating, and the old world used a very interesting process to increase efficiency. And they used milk from an entirely different animal, which was never reintroduced into the ecosystem.
SilverVixen: Oh right, you don't have cattle.
SilverVixen: That means none of you will ever have a proper steak au poivre with cognac and frites.
FlameHairSavior: I refuse to believe those are real words.
SilverVixen: It's French.
SilverVixen: So no, they're not real words.

Share a snippet from a wip without giving any context for it.
Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing?
How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of?
Thanks for the ask! :) :)
19) Share a snippet from a wip without giving any context for it. Part of me wants to skip this and substitute another question but I am working on some art for the Librarians exchange at the moment. That has to be secret but I don't think it's too much of a #Spoiler to do one line like
"Librarians win with what they know - not magic!"
36) How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of?
I'm quite fond of song titles to be honest. Not usually lyrics, or not formatted as such anyway.
Another place I have looked for titles are episode titles. Not for the show I am writing for usually, but from any show I have watched and liked. I used to keep a text file with a list of titles I had seen that I liked, and when titling a fic I checked that list first to see if anything fit.
Sometimes there is a line in the fic, or the prompt that inspired the story, that just demands a certain title.
As for the one I'm most proud of? Monstrare, Monere perhaps. A Warehouse 13 oneshot. The actual fic itself I am a bit meh about after all this time, but the title and summary I am like "I wrote that?" I also really like and the Sins of Atlantis. Totally self-indulgent ridiculous fic which I enjoy more than I should. It uses the same episode title structure as the Librarians show (I did that for all my prompt month fics that year, which I loved). I particularly like this one though as I feel like there's so many layers to it. Sins - so evocative, so many questions. Atlantis - how? why? I don't know. It was fun.
(Under the cut for the writing advice because despite making myself stick to just one point, I still went on a lot. Oops.)
28) Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing? Ooooh boy ok. The answer is both lots, and nothing, because writing is very individual. I can advise based on what works for me but it's so much a YMMV situation. I always feel like any writing advice needs to be prefaced with this.
So I don't write an essay (and I probably will anyway) but I will stick with just one point so it's not thousands of words. It's actually something I read once and no it isn't the classic "I can fix a bad page not a blank page" (which is also good advice btw). It's actually a point I super hated for a long time and that is probably why I have forgotten where I read it, so I apologise for the lack of attribution. The quote was something like - "Write what you want to have written, not what you want to write." Now that's crazy talk right? Well yeah, and I hated it, but I see the wisdom in it now.
Now a personal anecdote to illustrate the point. Writing fanfic brought me joy. I loved the plots coming together, how I could sneak in references. I don't know if this is egotistical to admit but I still re-read my old fic sometimes - I was my own intended audience - and I love it. However, I have original novel ideas. I have a dream of publishing. It's a future that I would like to build. Possibly just a fantasy but it's a dream that I've held for decades and it scares the hell out of me. Writing novels is hard. It's facing the fear of never being good enough every day, and making myself do the work anyway. Writing fanfic is so much easier and (for me) it became a way to self-sabotage.
Now I owe fanfic a tremendous debt because it has broken through writers block, it has given me soooooo many ideas that I have mutated into something else entirely. Don't ever think I don't respect fanfic but I'm chronically ill and I only have a limited amount of spoons. I have written novel-length fanfic and pouring weeks/months into a fanfic, was weeks/months I wasn't spending on my original work and I hated myself for that. I was writing something that I really wanted to write but even in the middle of the process I was sometimes like "what am I doing???" and questioning my life choices. I love my fanfic ideas and I get so nostalgic sometimes for the ones on my list that I never got round to writing.
Fanfic was something I desperately wanted to write, but it was not what I wished to have written. It brought me short-term joy for long-term anguish if you like.
So my point - my writing advice - is essentially a riff off "life is short". Be damn sure before you invest so much of yourself creatively in a story (whatever that story might be), that you won't get hit by regret later. It's so easy with fandom events: exchanges, bingos, prompt months etc. to get bursts of inspiration and giddy FOMO, only to get months down the road and wish you hadn't happened that earlier WIP.
We all have a story to tell right? So don't write what you think will get you kudos/comments. Write what is in your heart to write. Not some surface level impulse, but what you will be proud to have committed to a year down the road.
I can't bring myself to regret any of my fanfics. Hell as I said I enjoy reading them. But I had to stop so my energy could be focused in a direction that brought my longer-term peace, rather than short-term joy.
Fandom can be a fickle place, and also playing in someone else's sandbox can turn to ash. When a show has gone in a direction I can't follow, or when there's drama in the fandom, it has stolen my joy. I suppose what I'm really get is with writing, it's a creative journey, it's pouring so much of your soul into something. Protect your mental health. Invest yourself wisely.
Write with joy.

EUCLID ANALYSIS.
Part one -> Title and meaning
Part two -> You're already here!
Part three -> Line by line analysis part two
Part four -> Musical/intrumental notes
Part five -> The Night in Sleep Token
Part six -> Conclusion
Tumblr media
“Just run it back, give me five whole minutes” → The song itself is five minutes and 13 seconds long, but Vessel only starts singing these lyrics at the 13-second mark. As the listener, you give him five whole minutes to say what he’s gotta say, but he still asks for more time. I see it as a representation of humanity. A set lifetime to do and say so many things, to change in so many ways, but it never seems to be enough.
A realisation, a revelation almost, develops across this song; change is inevitable, and that’s okay, and that having a set lifetime, having five whole minutes, is entirely what makes people human. What makes humanity.
“Thick tar on the inside burning” → This is a vivid description that can symbolise depression. Tar is a very viscous liquid that causes physical damage (rashes, headaches etc.) by merely touching it, plus, it’s very easy to get stuck in it; to let yourself be consumed by it, like depression. It’s used in literature as a metaphor to represent the feeling of being weighed down or emotionally trapped, afterall.
It could also be in reference to the visualisers for the whole album, which ends in a black liquid pouring out of the album art creatures.
“I’ve got a ghost in the hallway grinning” → This is both a callback to ‘The Apparition’, and a symbol for the past. Ghosts are relics of the past; haunting places and people they can’t let go of because they don’t know how, which means the Ghost in the hallway grinning can either be about Sleep, the people in Vessel’s past, or about Vessel himself.
Grinning is typically associated with joy, however, in this context, it adds a much more ominous feeling to the line. It implies that The Ghost is mocking Vessel with his past, finding amusement in his suffering at recalling what he wants to leave behind.
“And a heavy head that won't stop turning” → This describes how Vessel is burdened by his past that just won't leave him alone. He’s constantly kept awake by memories that taunt him, keeping him in a state of emotional turbulence.
“If my fate is a bad collision” → Callback to Granite and its foreboding theme of car crashes. ‘Bad collision’ suggests a sense of inevitability and a negative outcome. An argument in a car that goes a little bit too far and ends badly. However, what’s interesting is the comparison of fate with collisions; it illustrates the feeling of Vessel being caught up in circumstances beyond his control. His past, present and future are controlled (by Sleep) and he can do absolutely nothing about it.
“And if my mind is an open highway” → This line flows perfectly with the previous lyric. In contrast to the presented idea of fate as a collision, this line portrays Vessel’s mind as a vast, open space symbolised by a highway. Highways are typically associated with freedom, movement, and endless possibilities, but, matched with the previous line, the freedom becomes terrifying because of the way Vessel has spent his known life following fate. It becomes predestination versus free will. Divinity versus humanity. Lore-wise, it creates a perfect representation of Vessel as a vessel; a human holding a God inside his body and having to deal with it.
“Give me the twilight two-way vision” → Yet again, lyrically, duality is brought back. Twilight is the transition zone between day and night and it symbolizes mystery and threshold between opposing states. The choice of twilight over sunset or dawn, for example, suggests a desire for a moment of transition, change, as opposed to the stark clarity of daylight or the complete darkness of night. Vessel does not want the past, daylight, but he does not want his present either (night).
Further, The term ‘two-way vision’ introduces the idea of seeing life from two different perspectives, which could be about Vessel’s past and present self, Vessel and his partner, or Vessel and Sleep. The concept of this dual vision implies the recognition of the coexistence of opposites. It could also be in reference to Higher’s “‘Cause I look for scarlet and you look for ultraviolet”.
“Give me one last ride on a sunset sky lane” → The phrase ‘one last ride’ implies a sense of finality or a farewell, which links to the theory that Euclid is a eulogy above all things. Vessel is asking for one last good thing before he leaves– changes– for good. A change between day and night is yet again brought up here; sunsets bring the night, which “comes down like Heaven”; it’s the last few minutes of time Vessel has to himself before he has to devote the Holy hours of the night to Sleep. The end of the day is a time often associated with reflection, and contemplation and is one of the transitions from day to night, which is also right before twilight.
“Call me when you get the chance” → Can either interpreted as a message from Vessel to his partner, to Sleep or vice versa. The echo-y effect placed on the lyric makes it feel almost like a voicemail as well.
“I can feel the walls around me closing in” → With this lyric, the previous line can now be interpreted as a plea for help. A ‘Please help me, but only if I’m not an inconvenience. I know we are not what we were, but I need your comfort again’.
Further, walls built up around people are typically used as symbolism for boundaries; metaphorical walls put up around a person to stop them from getting hurt. Vessels’ walls are collapsing in on him because he’s changing and learning how to trust again (which is good), but it scares him enough for him to try and go back to the past. Go back to the ghost in the hallway grinning. Overall, it creates a very claustrophobic and visceral image.
“Just running forwards, a life like wires” → Wires, robots and algorithms are referenced a multitude of times throughout the whole album, which this lyric carries on. Despite it all, the vessel is running through the complicated mess of wires that is life. To quote Genius; ‘the path taken has been inevitable. The wires will continue to carry the circuit forward, and instances of life are inevitable, similar to how some view life as being ‘written in the stars’’. Which means, again, fate and predestination are being referenced.
“As I see the past on an empty ceiling” → Vessel’s memories continue to haunt him, no matter how far he runs from them. However, Vessel is still running despite it all. He’s accepting the limited amount of time he has as well as that whatever has happened is in the past now.
Plus, an empty ceiling quite literally suggests moving out and moving on; the bare ceiling which doesn’t have all the familiar stains on it reflects what once was like a mirror for him.

Today I ascended from this mortal plane and remembered why I love movies and want to pursue filmmaking.
For context, I watched Barbie, and the Miraculous Ladybug movie today.
So, I saw Barbie with my mom, in a theater full of women. The first five minutes, I was sat there like "Did the internet lie to me again?" cause I was genuinely confused about what the hell was happening onscreen. But once I managed to get into the groove of things, I really enjoyed myself. I didn't play with Barbies growing up, and it was still enjoyable to me. It was so campy and funny(thank you Kate McKinnon and Michael Cera for being a big source of that), but it had some pretty deep themes, such as criticism against both a patriarchy and a matriarchy, the struggles of women in society, existentialism, and mother-daughter relationships. Definitely a movie for the girlies, but I think it's enjoyable for everyone.
I think the music was great. My mom hates musicals, despises them with her whole heart, but she told me after the movie that she loved I'm Just Ken. And yeah, it was so much. My favorite bit was the fast paced "Can you feel the Kenergy" moments. I've been playing Identity V, and I use that to hype me up for matches. It gives 80s power ballad, and it's super fun to listen to over and over again. Ryan Gosling did a very good job with it. I can see I'm Just Ken and Peaces battling it out for Best Original Song. Push was great as well, despite being underused in the movie, the full version(which is a cover of an existing song) is very interesting, and lyrically fits the movie so well.
I'm not typically a fan of bright colors in movies, catch me watching The Batman any day, but Barbie is the exception, as it just made certain scenes feel so much more important. Mattel offices being cold and gray, really sold that corporate vibes, and the soft white at the ending with Ruth definitely made it feel like Barbie was reaching a life-changing conclusion. It's a wonderful use of color.
Now the themes are the big draw of the movie. Regarding the patriarchy, matriarchy, and daily struggles of women, those themes are definitely hard to miss, but they do so much good with them. Showing Ken being essentially brainwashed by the idea of the patriarchy is interesting, and definitely rings home for anyone who grew up with boys as friends. I've seen a few guy friends of mine turn from sweet guys, into womanizers as they grew older. And it also shows that a matriarchy isn't good either, by showing how the Kens feel less than in BarbieLand. The Ken's situation is a muted version of women's situations in the real world. The Kens aren't sexualized or hated, but they're ignored. In the real world, both in the movie and real life, women have it worse than the Kens, and feel in a similar position. Makes it easy to enjoy both perspectives. Barbie focusing on thoughts of death and change as a whole hits with me on a personal level, as I have a lot of issues with existentialism, and any movie with death as a major theme usually brings me close to tears(such as Puss in Boots 2, curse you good movies). Seeing Barbie meet her creator in Ruth was so sweet, and was incredibly heartwarming.
Special mention to the line "We mother stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they've come". It made me want to give my mom the biggest hug, and I'm in no way a hugger.
Then I went home, and watched the Miraculous Ladybug movie because I had nothing else to do. I've been with the show since 2020, which isn't as long as other fans, but the show still sticks in my brain the same. I knew the animation was going to be great, and that the art direction would make up for any shortcomings in the story. And while yes, the plot was rushed (duh, like, how many years has it taken to get to this point in the show? its gonna feel rushed) but the art was absolutely stunning. My favorite moment was from Hawkmoth's villain song, Chaos Will Reign(available on Spotify) when they pulled out the Disney Villain lime green color. I love that color, and seeing Hawkmoth with it made me ascend. I really love the ending battle as well, the use of colors, lightning effects, butterfly textures, was just perfect. The animation was also really smooth, down to the small details of hair movements, such as when Nino and Alya are on the roller coaster, or when Chat Noir's hair gets wet.
The music was probably my least favorite part, just because I think Cristina Vee could've slayed it, and that the songs sounded kind of generic. But Oh My God, Chaos Will Reign had me bopping and replaying it. In fact, I'm listening to Chaos Will Reign and I'm Just Ken while writing this. It definitely gave me old Disney villain song vibes, mixed with the slightest hint of a Danny Elfman soundtrack. It just sounded so evil, but in a way that I can get behind. Keith Silverstein can actually sing, and that note at the end was wonderful. The vibrato gave me life. I was lowkey hoping Nooroo would stop talking so I could hear more. The chanting was awesome, and gave Friends on the Other Side vibes. I was (and still am) a big fan of villain songs, and this is a throwback to my theater kid days when I exclusively played villains and enjoyed it. Definitely overthrew the Hawkmoth Rap as my favorite Miraculous Ladybug song, but the Hawkmoth Rap is like, second place still. The only crime this song had was being too short. Release the ten hour cut.
Finally, aside from the glory that is Chaos Will Reign, I want to say that the two identity reveal scenes were amazing. I'll start off with Adrien and Marinette's, just because I care about that one the least. I think it was a creative way to go about it, with the masquerade masks. Fanfiction wins again. But I have so much to squeal about when it comes to the Adrien and Gabriel reveal. This version of Gabriel was definitely way more sympathetic than his show counterpart, despite committing atrocious acts. I actually wanted this Gabriel to get some redemption, and I think that bit of forgiveness from Adrien is just that. Let them have a good bond, PLEASE! The whole battle scene was just amazing, the fact that Hawkmoth was willing to do literally anything, and very nearly came close to winning. I knew he wasn't going to win, it's a kid's movie, but I was still on the edge of my seat and biting my nails.
I need both of these movies injected into my bloodstream ASAP.
Do I recommend them? Depends on your preferences. For Barbie, I can see why people wouldn't like it, it's campy(in a fun way), and it's anti-patriarchy and anti-matriarchy, which would make the misogynists and misandrists mad. But I think if you're open to a goofy time that will make you appreciate the women in your life, then give it a watch. It's definitely worth it.
For Miraculous Ladybug, it's a kid's movie, based on a show with a big following spanning years. I think it's something to watch if you're a fan, former or current, of the show. If you're just starting to watch Miraculous, it'll be a better watch if you sit through the show. But, it's a good movie, and still enjoyable for novice Miraculers.
I'm definitely watching these over and over again.

that is very understandable about preferring to save money and not really keep up with the latest tech haha, but it really is too bad that companies don't make their games compatible with older devices. maybe someday if you end up wanting or needing to replace yours you'll have a chance to play the game! and if you ever do then i hope you'll enjoy it. the songwriters for wish were two people who had only ever written for pop singers before, which i guess isn't automatically bad--after all, phil collins did a great job with the songs he wrote for tarzan. but i wish that for disney's 100th anniversary movie they had gotten a team that was experienced with broadway-style music, the way they usually do for their musicals. the song "at all costs" from wish is an especially strange song to me because just listening to it, you'd think it has a way different context than it actually does in the movie. oh wow i've actually not heard of that book series before, but it's cool that it's getting a disney+ series! i hope the show turns out well. the only thing i'm reading right now is "disney's art of animation: from mickey mouse to hercules", which so far is a great overview of disney's history and i really wish it had had a newer edition. ooh that sounds interesting, i might try and watch greystroke sometime! what do you think of the direct-to-video sequel (or midquel, i guess) to disney's tarzan, and the tv series, if you've watched those things? i remember watching them both when they originally came out, but i don't recall much of what happened in them and i don't think i saw every episode of the tv series. also, i saw your post about the supervising animator of jane following you on instagram--that's so cool, congratulations!! -🌟
I was listening to Hercules this morning at work, and all I could think about was how amazing the lyrics were. The line from One Last Hope "I'm down to one last shot and my last high note, before that blasted underworld gets my goat" is so satisfying because it rhymes perfectly, makes sense, and is a clever pun using a common phrase that is also in this case literal given he's half goat. And in Zero to Hero there's the line "and this perfect package packed a pair of pretty pecs" is probably the best example of alliteration I've ever heard in a song. Also, all the songs fit perfectly in the movie. They don't sound like something written to get radio plays or to hit the top of the charts and then stuffed into a movie they don't belong in.
More and more lately it seems like Disney's really just going for the quick buck. Just trying to get things out as quickly as possible with out putting the effort in to making it quality like they used to (nothing against the crew, at the end of the day they have to do what their bosses say). So frustrating… just because something is popular does not mean it's the best. Thinking back to growing up in the 90s and the music that was popular then. I loved the music, but it would have been awful to shove that into the movies. Technically it did happen with Mulan. I love that movie, and I do really enjoy True to Your Heart, but it is soooo out of place with the rest of the songs that it practically pulls out out of the movie, like you just changed to channel to something else, and it ruined the ending for me. I honestly feel like skipping the end every time I watch it. One of the reasons the 90s worked so well is they brought in that broadway style that worked so well, and kept the pop music out of the movies (and in the credits where it actually makes sense).
I think the reason Phil Collins worked so well is he was making music for the movie, not what was popular at the time. It made complete sense to bring him in because he's probably the best known drummer at the time. From what I've seen and read he came in willing to learn, because he'd never done music for a film before. This wasn't just writing individual songs, this was telling a story and moving that story along. If you listen to his other work you can notice the difference. Still distinctly Phil Collins, but still serving the film they were made for.
I also remember seeing an interview a few years back with a number of different film composers talking about writing for movies (this one was specifically Marvel movies) compared to "back in the day". One thing that really stood out to me was they said that the movie's are filmed or story-boarded and the director will watch playback with temporary music, sometimes music from other movies that have already been released. The composers said that by the time they are brought in to write the actual music for the movie, the director has "seen the film" so often with the place holder music that that's what they want in the film. So the composers have to write something new that sounds similar to the temp music, instead of having the freedom to create their own music. I wonder if it might be a little of that going on too.
Ooo, I picked up a copy of that art of animation book at a convention a few years ago, still haven't gotten around to reading it though. It's always a shame when book series don't continue. Would be interesting to see a newer version of that series now with todays computer animation included.
I enjoyed the tv series for the most part. A lot of the episodes were based on the original novels, and I loved seeing new adventures for Tarzan. But at the same time, it felt off. The animation was understandably poor (they had only a tiny budget), but the thing that bothered me the most was the way the characters behaved. I know some of it was to make the story work, but they for the most part felt like different characters playing the ones from the movie. Jane was probably the worst, she seemed even less equipped for life in the jungle in the series than she did when she first appeared in the movie. Tarzan and Jane was basically 3 episodes of the series tied together as flashbacks for the story of their 1 year anniversary.
Tarzan 2 was basically an expansion of the Son of Man segment of Tarzan. It had far better animation than Tarzan and Jane (the characters were actually on model!), and the story was pretty cute too. I loved the new songs in it, although they weren't quite up there with Tarzan's songs, it was nice they were able to bring Phil back to write them. Also love that the one was reworked and put in the broadway show.
OMG, thank you!!! I'm still over the moon about that… I keep checking back to see if it actually happened and I didn't just dream it, lol.
