A Letter to the AMC Press Center--Feel Free to Use!
@ca-suffit
Link to contact the AMC Press Center:
Feel free to make changes to your own letter where you see fit:
Dear AMC Press Center, As a fan of what your creative team has done for the show Interview with the Vampire, I am disappointed in your decision to include Elisa Hansen (aka Maven of the Eventide) in your press events. What your creative team has done is provide an adaptation of a story that explores themes of race/racism and queer relationships and how these two things intersect that the original source material did not. As a result, you have opened this story up to people who otherwise have not been included in this type of media. It is for this reason that I am disappointed in your decision to invite Hansen to any of your events. Hansen has promoted negativity toward the show in ways that illustrate a lack of respect for what your creative team has set out to do and has made her space unwelcoming to the very audience whom this show appeals to and who, arguably, have been its strongest supporters. Additionally, Hansen herself has admitted that she has not entered any contests to be invited to any events. It seems unfair that she should get this privilege when other content creators have been more supportive of this version of the story being told. Again, considering how important this show is for your strongest supporters, this is a disappointment. I hope you will make better decisions in who you choose to give this kind of privilege and opportunity to in the future.

On related note, a few years ago, the Entomological Society of America officially discontinued the use of "gypsy moth" and "gyspy ant" as common names for Lymantria dispar and Aphaenogaster araneoides. L. Dispar is now known as the "spongy moth," so named for the appearance of their eggs, but I don't think a new common name has caught on for the ant species yet.
These changes we brought about, in large part, by the advocacy of Romani people in academia. You might not think that bug names are a very serious issue, but I believe that language matters. These species became known as "gypsies" because their attributes were likened to certain stereotypes and negative perceptions of actual Roma, so the continued use of those names reaffirmed those negative associations in the public consciousness. Slurs and pejoratives can never be truly decontexualized.
In my mind, one of the biggest obstacles that Romani people face when we are trying to advocate for ourselves is a lack of recognition as a marginalized group that deserves the necessary consideration. Even for seemingly trivial matters, like bugs or comic book characters, the way that people talk about us-- and talk down to us, when we get involved-- is telling. So, I always think that changes like this are a win, because it means that people are willing to learn and grant us the dignity we deserve. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to effect change in your own field, even arts and science.

"This is freedom of speech"
Yeah, you don't think these guys try to take advantage of the same "it's my freedom of speech" argument yall try to pull, which ironically shuts down and censors arguments? You're not even using the term right. Freedom of speech just means that government officials can't intervene. And even then, it's a faulty system in which politicians pick and choose what freedom of speech depending on what benefits them
If you can't recognize the difference between content moderation and actual censorship, you just contributed to actual censorship. You allowed bigotry and pedophiles to feel safe and prosper and grow, and when that happens, they will censor those marginalized voices that attempt to speak out
"You guys are convinced when you do it, it's not censorship" is such an empty and disingenuous fallacy you have to wonder why these people keep on propping up the "antis" or whatever as some alt right puritan group, when theyre the ones that use their exact same talking points
Anyways, we know yall dont give a damn about freedom of speech because you cant even say "BLM" or "Free Palenstine" w/o mods all of a sudden banning users and staff. Or the fact you guys really hate we use our freedom of speech to call you racists and pedos. What you're looking for is freedom of consequences. The same way these dudes in the images above think they can just do all of this and keep their jobs and not get punched in the face afterwards
Pick your poison

Into the Lupo-verse
Tumblr media
First row: We got our boy, the OG 14 yr old Lupo with his default look. All the other variants to the right of him are essentially how he looks when he’s older. Like 16-20+. He sports various twist hairstyles and some piercings that resemble a lot like Hazels. I don’t see him wearing other hair accessories other than his headband unless it’s for specific occasions
Second row: Third Eye Lupo AU w/ and w/o headband. Lupo's headband here has an eye pattern. Some say it's redundant......anyways the others next to them are older Lupo in this AU that also wear twists and piercings. I would say he doesn't really have twists cover his forehead on the account of the eye situation
Third row: We got Mercenary 23 Lupo, 23 for short. Has a much shorter and jagged hairstyle compared to the rest. He also has the Ryoma scarf because I love that scarf, it defies the laws of gravity. He sadly has a lil scar on his lip 😔. On the last end to the very right is Bad Timeline Lupo. Pretty much looks the same as OG, it’s just he doesn’t change his hair all too much when gets older. Just gets the one twist on the left side. He also doesn’t get piercings, he usually wears the scouter anyways. BT Lupo tends to share the same eye shape as 16 yr old Yamcha, mainly because he is very tired. His headband is a lot longer than the others too. Also I didn’t feel like drawing it but this Lupo has a mechanical arm……on the center we have The Aether. Very fancy guy that has his carnival themed mask. His headband has two large feather accessories placed on either side, and on the center is a lotus shaped pendant. He has a sparkly transparent silk scarf floating around him too. Very appropriate for a god, how’d he get up there?
And that’s about all the variants I can’t think of aside from 1 I’m not sharing

Hey Y'all-
I know yall might not mean to, so don't take this in bad faith:
I DO focus on writing here too guys lmao. please stop saying this. It hurts my feelings, because I put in a lot of effort and it feels dismissive. The visual examples WILL help you write. You have to be able to picture your characters and the examples of how race applies will help you write. Hair, complexion, blushing, lighting, etc. all those descriptions will help!
I've mentioned it before, but how can you write well about your Black characters if you don't know what we look like? If you aren't familiar with our textures, our hairstyles, with how light works on our skin, with things we might do in our day to day lives? If you ever want to commission art for your fan character or OC, how are you gonna know if it looks any good, if you can't spot what makes it thoughtfully done?
I'm sure y'all don't mean harm by it, but it does make me a bit sad to think that my lessons aren't helping those who want to write.

I feel like the way some straight dudes read the character of Odysseus can be used as a bit of a litmus test--Do you read him as a man who fell victim of his own arrogance and as a man who was forced to be unfaithful to his wife more than once in order to have any chance of seeing her or their son ever again *OR* do you see him as a "lucky" man who *got* to sleep with goddesses?
I think this answer can vary based on the version of the story someone is most familiar with, so it's not black and white. But I think it could be used as the opening of a good, informative conversation
