“That’s you?”
Damian glared at you as you attempt (and subsequently failed) to hold in your giggles.
“Yes. Yes it is.”
“I thought Grayson’s was bad but — BAHAHAHA”
But it was too much. You see, you first met your boyfriend a bit later in life. As such, you never saw his fantastic hairdo back when he was little. It was as if he styled it so it’d impale once he headbutted them.
“No Ice Cream for you two tonight.”
“NOOOOOOOOOO!!”
“Why’d I get caught in the crossfire?!”

Martin: Okay, Jon. I'm going to need you to listen t-
Jon: Are you really about to lecture me, the most powerful avatar to the fear of knowledge, about multiversal theory?
M: Yes. Yes I am. Cause, okay, listen. I might not have an actual degree-
J: I'm well aware.
M: -but I've watched enough Doctor Who and Star Trek to know there are two options.
J: I already know. Either destroy our own world, or release the fears into countless others we've been talking about it for hours.
M: NO! That's not it. There are two possibilities. Either there are no other universes and we are alone in existence, and we could release the fears and they'll be stuck in a void for eternity. A winning situation.
J: I've already said, I don't want-
M: OR! And this is the important one. There are infinite realities out there, infinite worlds.
J: Which I don't want to taint with the fears.
M: Ah, but you see. There are infinite worlds, infinite possibilities. Every choice ever made has infinite worlds with minor differences. There's a world exactly like ours, except your favorite sandwich is a PB&J.
J: Eugh.
M: Which means, for every choice, every possibility, every option is and will be chosen.
J: I don't see your poi-
M: Therefore, there is a 100 percent chance that at least one of those worlds will release the fears into all of the un-feared worlds.
J: ...
M: So we might as well make it ours and save ourselves.
J: *sigh* Okay.
M: Now, I know you're still adamant, but- wait what?
J: I said okay. I might not want to be the one to doom countless other worlds to eternal damnation, but if someone's gonna do it, we might as well benefit.

So I've seen plenty of people convinced that Steve or Eddie or Max are gonna die, and there are believable reasons for all of them no doubt, but I'm fairly convinced it'll be Jonathan
The best thematically? No. But stranger things is on Netflix, and art isn't their priority. They also demonstratively don't want to kill of fan favourite characters. Hopper dying was really important to the end of season 3, but he's back anyway. The show doesn't have the hold it used to on its audience, the LAST thing netflix wants at this point is anything that could lower audience investment. So, yeah, I don't think it'll be Steve.
The show also has an aversion to killing or seriously hurting the younger kids, which, fair, so I don't think it'll be any of them. Could be Eddie, sure, I'm just not convinced he counts as a major character. And also the writers must know how cheap that would be
But they have said someone will die, and assuming that isn't a bluff, there's a few things said character needs:
-The audience needs to care. Like, Murray is a major character, technically, but I don't think anyone would cry for him
-The characters need to care. Bob and Billy were impactful, not just on their own merit, but because their deaths touched other characters
-Not be essential to the show going forward. You're not gonna take El out of stranger things. Any character that feels like the show still needs them are proooobably safe (don't quote me on that)
So we have Jonathan. He's not a fan favourite, sure, but he's been around from the start. Most people would feel something if he died. And if a viewer isn't invested in Jonathan, they might still be invested in his dynamic with the other Byers, or with Nancy
Jonathan's an established member of the Upside Down squad. Even for the characters without a defined relationship with him, he's one of the group. And, more characters would give a shit than Billy, ya know. Max cared. No one else did. Jon has enough connections to carry that aspect
And what has he been doing in season 4? Oh nooo. He and Nancy have been growing apart?? But that's been his only plotline post season 1!
Hey it sure is weird isn't it, how Nancy and Steve, having pretty firmly moved on are now interested in each other again? Little odd how despite the fact Jon and Nancy clearly still love each other (I'll be taking no criticism, I'm not sure where the idea Jon doesn't love Nancy anymore came from, even if the reverse may apply), the show is setting up an alternative romantic subplot for Nancy?
But, if Jonathan dies the show won't be able to... Nothing. Nothing changes. He's really not had much to do in season 4. There's the Nancy thing, and some weird, vague, 'I want to do what's right and stay with my family, uh, and like college I guess?' kinda plot, I don't know. He's not even the driver!!! Argyle does that!!
So yeah, I mean, Jonathan doesn't need to be in the show anymore, he's got just enough audience and character investment to matter, and no one could call it cheap, being a main season one character
Plus, if it's him, we go 4 for 4 on Joyce losing a loved one!

INSPIRED TO CONFORM
Inspired to conform,
To a view keeping me from harm….
Me for only her
And the living Word,
My cheering section says struggle on!
–
Giving up the passionate ways
And anyone who on him preys…
Preparing new life
That’s real, not hype,
Wanting to do as she says!
–
Breaking from his recent past,
Struggling for love that lasts…
Taking time
To stay in line,
Not letting his life be type…
