the hackers aren’t gone (and what we know about them)
so for a while we’ve all been thinking that the ransomware hackers from season 5 left a little…underwhelmingly. its possible they aren’t done with us just yet. so i thought i’d put all we know about the hackers into one post.
1. starting off a lot further back than you’d expect, in 2x14. when the CAD system went offline, the FBI was sent to the dispatch centre to see if they had been hacked. they weren’t, but during this time the analysts gave us some very interesting backstory information:
“In 2016 a single web address went viral on twitter. people clicked on it and their phones started speed dialling 911. The attack in Atlanta last year was traced back to Russian hackers, The city spent more than $2.6 million trying to unlock their systems, rather than pay the ransom demand of $50,000 in bitcoin.”
2. Now, moving onto the blackout. In 5x01, the first things that started happening in terms of hacking was fake natural disaster alerts, phones automatically speed dialling 911, and cars gps trackers malfunctioning.
where have we heard that middle issue before? ah yes, the hack from 2016.
then both taylor and karen come to the realisation that it was not app updates and software glitches, but ransomware.
3. still in 5x01, when the air traffic control systems get overtaken, this is what happens
now its not bitcoin, but its close enough to what was described in point 1 to wonder if its the same hacker collective.
4. and finally, in 5x03, the hackers just kinda…disappear. they give back the power with none of their demands met, and just leave. in taylor’s news coverage of this, she says (there’s talking over this, so i tried to transcript it best i could):
“the hacker group initially claiming responsibility and demanding a hefty ransom has gone offline, virtually scrubbing their existence from the internet, leaving no trace behind. many questions remain, what was the motive behind this attack?”
in the end, i think there’s enough roots that have been put down quite early on in the show for them to do something big with the hackers. and i mean really big. maybe this is what season 6 has in store for us, maybe not. i hope so, because this would be kinda cool. but i guess we’ll find out…
What if the ace in Jake’s sleeve isn’t letting himself get arrested? He has Nymos. What if he knew dead sure he’d be caught in the mine, and all that’s left is one chance?
Maybe he set up Nymos in such a way that if he gets arrested, some of the information he found out after the hack will be published. As leverage.
So he was caught, but threatened that all other information would be published as well if he gets arrested.
And since it’s mostly very important for governments to keep their dirty little secrets a secret, they might make a deal.
And he said the part with "ace up his sleeve" because that’s exactly what he would have done if MC had been arrested.
And he promised to never leave MC and he would never let them separate Jake and MC..
(But I mean, then he could have done it before all those year on the run lol)
(I also considered him letting Nymos send a message to MC and then giving MC full access to all the information of the hack so that MC has leverage.)
What are the chances that our Duskwood friends have cut off contact because of the police and FBI? We break many, many, MANY laws. Besides being "involved" with a criminal wanted by the FBI.
There is also the possibility of being threatened by someone...
(not sure if this has been done already but) I headcanon that instead of the OCS recruiting Camila, Camila found the OCS.
(This, of course, is inspired by me rewatching the “Carmen Sandiego” pilot) (and this also inspired other thoughts about a CSxWN au…)
Anyways, these thoughts were specifically inspired by the character “Player”, who hacks security systems and tells the owners where their cybersecurity weaknesses are. So my idea is that Camila, who already had some coding/hacking experience before she first became a nun (maybe before everything went bad with her parents one of them was in the quickly evolving tech industry and would teach her coding for fun?), moonlighted as a grey-hat hacker, and got on the OCS’s radar when she hacked their systems.
The OCS thought that it was some malicious attempt to try and expose them, but the team that was sent (probably Shannon, Mary, Lilith, and Bea) just find this little guy with innocent bambi eyes and telling them exactly how terrible their file encryption is and “oh my gosh, I like, hacked your expense accounts in five minutes. Why do you guys spend so much of your budget on-”, and she is promptly adopted.
Well, not so simply, as one does not forcefully adopt people into the OCS (the Ava-situation not-withstanding). Superion is at first not so agreeable about the group's unorthodox decision, but after Camila demonstrates her tech skills, she gives in and allows her to stay (and writes to whoever the person in charge of transferring nuns between orders or whatever so that it can be done officially as well). Partly for practicality, as the order needs more tech-savvy sister warriors with how prominent technology is becoming in the world, but also because Camila is such a little guy and Superion could not say no.
You have to be a truly miserable, sorry ass person to go out of your way to target a fan-fiction site ran by volunteers. Like how low can you possibly get?!
So I may or may not have spent a good chunk of my day trying to learn how to look into onis code and while I may not have yet succeeded I will likely keep fucking around with shit tomorrow and if I manage to succeed it'll spell great doom for my sanity as oni becomes the interest I've officially poured the most effort into analyzing
— mc’s meaning in Hannah’s case was really just a coincidence? i dont buy it.
— i hoped we will learn something about Jake’s background, what exactly he did that he is on the run now. what happened to his mother? what about Nathan Donfort? he cheated on mrs Donfort with Jake’s mother? or Jake is just a child from his previous relationship? does mr Donfort even know that he has a son? 🤔
— Richy as MWAF was so obvious that i wasnt even surprised (but still: WHY MY SWEETHEART????)
— what about Phil? i hoped that we will be able to talk with him again. he was a really interesting character:/
BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT JAKE FINALLY CONFESSED HIS FEELINGS FOR MC<3 I LOVE EVERBYTE FOR IT AND I FORGIVE THEM UNFINISHED THREADS.
I am watching Mr.Robot and Jake character fits so close to Elliot in terms of his closed personality, introverted hacker. I also think that just like how Elliot works for cyber security , Jake used to work like that too until the government expose thing.
Anyway watching all the hacking stuff in the series, made me attracted to Jake even more 😳 as it had the most accurate and realistic hacking scenes.
While moonvale isn't enough...I have a little theory, we know that Eric Briggs is mentioned by Alan in episode 10, what if he really is part of the police but as some kind of hacker? a programmer? Alan managed to protect himself from Jake twice, so there was someone who helped him protect himself from Jake and what if it was Eric? What if he played the role of Jake in Moonvale? being a new hacker who will help us but a "good hacker" who works in the police.
Of course we don't know if it's the same Eric, but it's interesting to think about.
Hey Ho, dear, nice to see you here. Hope you're doing good as well. I'm alright I would say. Thank you a lot for asking. <3
Ohhhh! This definitely sounds very, very interesting and very logical! Very interesting. 🤔 I mean, I can imagine, let’s say MC gets very well-known for the Duskwood case. So probably it is also known that we have cooperated with a hacker in duskwood. So, what if Eric knows about that and that's why he contacts MC because we already worked with a hacker to solve a case like this. And if it’s the same Eric that Alan mentions, then it could well be that Alan left a good word about us with Eric. 🤔 And I mean, I'm sure we will need a hacker. Otherwise it could definitely be much more difficult. Much of the information to solve Hannah’s case was obtained illegally. And since we're not going to be in Grove Springs, we will need more than just a chat messenger. So, I think it's very, very likely. Even more interesting to work with the police itself. That could be veeery funny. I love this idea so much!
(Imagine Jake vs Eric, uhhhh, damn. 👀 Imagine how offended jake could be if he finds out we are working with another hacker now. "Another hacker? I thought I'm the only hacker in your life?!" "Jake, please listen to me! It’s not what it looks like! (Sorry, I just had to hehe))
Well, no, I'm going to belive in this theory now because I want it. It's good and exciting and funny. It's canon now. I will just decide it. 😌
No, joke aside, thank you so much for sharing this theory. It sounds very tempting and it really makes the most sense so far, I would say. This could really lead to lots of interesting situations. Especially the reaction of MC to another hacker could be interesting, at least for those who played Duskwood before. I imagine MC being like 'No, nope, not going to work with you, it's like cheating!'
Wahh, okay I really love it, you see? Thank you so much for sending it. I really appreciate it and I'm amazed. Hehe.
I hope you will have a fantastic day/evening/night! Take care of yourself and stay healthy and safe! 💚
Well, when we download Duskwood for the first time, this little teaser appears before starting the first episode. I downloaded it to analyze it more calmly, that's when I noticed this:
Português:
Bem, quando baixamos Duskwood pela primeira vez, esse pequeno teaser aparece antes de começar o primeiro episódio. Eu o baixei para analisá-lo mais calmamente, foi quando notei isto:
English:
If you notice well, the game's teasers always give a hint of what will happen in the episodes, but in this beginning when it shows Jake's scenes, this one itself has never been mentioned before.
Given the physical size and being something that happens at the beginning of the game introducing us to the Duskwood universe, I have no doubt that this man is our hacker. And as he already told us, Hannah and Lilly are his only family, which suggests his mother has died.
This part of the teaser shows exactly how it happened. The question now is: Was it an accident? Or does it have something to do with their pursuers?
so could brant be a Vacker, many of you will disagree but.....
Here is my reasoning
in the registry files Brants name is redacted, the only person who could do that is an emissary and who is an emissary, pretty much every single Vacker. So, if Brant was a vacker and they were ashamed of him for being "Talentless" so they could have redacted his last name to make sure there are no scandals.
brant has dark hair. Who else has dark hair, the Vackers.... though the first reason made a lot more sense.
don't tell me his last name is Alger because that is his middle name plus all the vackers middle names also start with an A
If you find evidence that he is not a Vacker please tell me.
