The Ending You Deserve
Tumblr media
Jake x MC - Duskwood One Shot
I wanted to practice angst and creating suspense. This happened. It has a touch of humor, a hint of fluff, and other things! Sassy MC. No smut for a change. It feels weird 🤭
Can Jake run from death and make it to MC?
Or will his demons win the race?
MC isn't named or described as it was more for the emotions. It's all from Jake’s POV.
Pain.
Aching. Cold. Hot. Burning, burning, burning. It rolled through him in waves.
He couldn’t breathe.
He couldn’t see.
Dread wove through his internal organs and strangled him from the inside like an invasive vine had taken root in the core of himself.
Smoke and ash choked his airways as he stumbled and tripped through the mine.
His heart rattled savagely against his ribs.
It felt like a creature in its death throes, trying to break out of his chest.
His foot collided with a jagged, jutting rock and he went down like a house of cards. Crumpled and folded as he rolled and rolled.
Hissing as tiny sharp stones cut into his face and hands.
Ash ridden sweat trickled down his face and stung the many small slices leaking blood as he lay on his back panting and cursing himself as the ominous orange glow of raging flame inched along the underground tunnel.
The air grew thinner and thinner.
The smoke grew thicker and thicker.
The gasoline fueled fire was a monster bearing down on him and he scrambled to his trembling feet. Taking off at a staggering jog, one hand braced on the rough, dirty wall.
A pinprick of light opened up far ahead and a jolt of adrenaline surged through his bloodstream. He hurried, panting and terrified, breathing too shallowly as the rising heat nipped at his neck.
He knew he had a choice to make.
It was death by fire or FBI.
Neither option appealed to him, but as he looked back and saw the swirling, furious flames licking nearer and nearer. He knew he had to decide.
It wasn’t fair.
He wasn’t innocent or free from any wrongdoing. But he didn’t deserve to die like an animal, run over and left bleeding out and twitching on the side of the road until he grew cold and stiff.
No one would miss him.
No one would look for him.
He was all alone. It was a surety. He was always, always alone.
That’s not true though, is it, Jake?
It hasn’t been for a while now.
The voice in his head made his breath catch, and his heart pounded painfully in his throat.
It felt as though someone had reached inside his chest, broken through his flesh, muscle and grasped his bones to pry them apart, an invisible fist that gripped his pulsing heart and shoved it in his mouth. Forcing him to swallow it.
It beat there like a Wardrum. Marching him to his death.
It throbbed and choked and filled his mouth with copper. He couldn’t stand it. The pain was corrosive as it ate through his nerves and left them exposed to the heat and acrid taint of smoke.
She is waiting for you. Don’t let her down.
You PROMISED.
A soul deep sigh huffed through his nose as his feet sped up, pebbles and broken glass crunched under his boots as he raced toward the gradually growing dot of light.
The roaring fire and echo of his escape bounced off the stone and haunted him as he ran for his life.
Four years of running.
Four years of searching and shame and seclusion. Running had been his gift. His lifeline.
Yet he felt wholly unprepared for this last sprint.
He was tiring.
Steps shortening faster than his scalding breath as black smoke slithered overhead and wrapped its insidious tentacles around his body.
He would not make it.
He would not see her after all.
The thought felt like a poisoned blade sinking into his chest. He could feel the barbs of it twisting and cutting through sinew.
He would soon bleed out without a sound.
The fight left him as the intangible knife punctured his hope and foolish dream of having a love he didn’t deserve.
They’d been writing their own story, filling the pages with dreams and fragile, flourishing love.
He felt like coming here was akin to him tearing out those pages and ripping them up.
It broke him so completely he almost stopped and let the flames embrace him.
He could already smell the sickly sweet and pungent scent of his blistering flesh. Like tanning leather over a flame.
He was going to burn.
It would hurt more than he already did.
It would roast through his flesh, flay it from his bones and incinerate muscle and blood to dust.
He could already feel it.
Creeping closer, singing the hair on his nape, and filling his nose with the cloying scent of dangerous smoke.
No one would know it was him.
Nothing would remain for her except blackened bones and the memory that he had gone to the mine instead of her.
She would blame herself for this.
It would destroy her.
And it was all his doing.
No.
Never.
He wouldn’t be a cause of her pain anymore than he already had.
A burst of fresh speed and determination glittered through him as the fire drew so near he could feel the flames whispering in his ear.
Too slow, Jake. It’s too late.
You can’t run away from this.
Your luck has faded.
He forced it aside and sobbed through his clenched teeth as the dot of light swelled and came toward him.
His legs were heavy. Growing weightier with every leap over fallen support beams and shattered rock.
His rabbit heart raced faster and faster. It deafened him to the groaning, popping wood as the fire devoured it.
Tears streaked through the soot and blood on his face. Leaving pale tracks through the grime and coating his chapped lips with brine.
His vision blurred as his emotions broke free of the locked and coded vault he’d stuffed in the back of his hive mind to come here.
He attempted to shove them back in.
It didn’t work.
They spilled out and utterly overwhelmed him.
He’d spent years locking them down. Beating them into submission, so they listened to him and not him to them. The steel and stone fortress he erected around himself had already crumbled for her and there was nowhere left to hide.
He’d given her everything he had, and it wouldn’t be enough.
You always knew you weren’t enough. Let’s not think too highly of ourselves.
She deserves better than this.
Better than you.
That is a truth you will never escape.
His heart fractured as his mind fought against him and his flagging spirit frayed further.
She deserved better than this.
He was failing her. Had failed her since he let her in.
He’d always known he’d cause her future hurt.
He just hadn’t expected it would come so soon. That he wouldn’t get to watch from afar as she healed from his vanishing.
They had always lived on borrowed time.
And now, the fire was so close sweat slid like rivers down his back and legs, eating away at his nerves as they flared wildly under his soaking skin.
Jake knew it was futile. The ball of light in his vision seemed to run away from him as his eyes blurred and cleared repeatedly. His hands curled into two tight fists and he fought the urge to punch the wall in fury.
He bit down on the inside of his cheek instead. Biting down hard until the skin gave and blood welled over the tattered edge, glazing his tongue with the buttery, metallic taste of it.
It acted like a stimulant.
His eyes focused and his heart pounded fiercely as he ran and ran and ran.
Feet pounded stone as fire blazed through the mine. He had to outrun it.
He would outrun in it.
There was no other option as his blood pressure skyrocketed and his breath became harsh, shallow.
The fire sucked away the air before it could go in as he tried to gulp it down.
There was no oxygen.
His insides kept writhing and twisting.
They knotted up and up so tightly he swore felt something tear. Something that made him cry out as the air was crushed from him.
He could see shadows in his periphery. Specks of darkness and sparks of light as his lungs ached and screamed for oxygen. For rest.
Resting meant dying.
Dying meant failing her.
Failing her was never an option before.
It couldn’t be one now.
He put his head down and ran.
He jumped over another wooden beam as the light ahead broadened and he landed atop aged wooden boards.
He only had time to scream as they broke under his weight and their age.
Jake fell. And fell and fell.
He screwed his eyes shut before he hit the ground.
The impact was so brutal, he almost wished it had killed him.
He hit the ground with a resounding whack.
His head cracked off the stone. Pain, blinding and bleeding, radiated through his skull and brain, frying his rationality completely and leaving room for fear to consume him wholly.
Warmth seeped across his scalp and his hand came away, stained in crimson when he reached to feel the damage.
Head wounds bled worse than they were and the gash didn’t feel too bad once the stinging pain subsided a little. He internally surveyed the rest of himself. Finding nothing broken despite his ribs feeling as though a giant had stomped him flat.
Dirt and blood coated his teeth as he wheezed and coughed. Choking and spluttering as he tried to get a handle on himself.
He’d bitten through his lip, and it bled like a bitch.
Something was stabbing into his shoulder.
As he stared up at the hole he fell through, a sensation like a thousand razor blades slicing down his skin moved down his spine, coiling in his lower back. It swirled there, a ball of cutting, primal fright that soon bled through the rest of him.
A rickety ladder leading up and out offered a small ray of hope.
He clung to it and calculated how long it would take to climb in his current condition.
Fire scoured over the opening and left no place for him to escape.
His hope died with a breathless whimper.
He barely even heard it as agony rippled through his bones and he rolled onto his knees, panting.
“Fuck!” He spat. The word was more like a vicious curse as it rebounded off the mine walls and into his ears.
Mocking him as he squinted into the darkness and tried to figure out what to do next.
The fire would keep the police and FBI away from the mine until it burnt out. They wouldn’t rush in until it was safe enough. He knew that.
He could use that.
Jake kneeled on the filthy ground and schemed.
The temperature rose and rose as he shuffled through his thoughts.
He neatly ordered and arranged everything, thinking of his brain like a filing cabinet.
He could slide one drawer open and find a treasure trove of data and memories.
Some would get stuck as he tugged at them. Rusty and dusty, hardly ever opened for fear it would cut off his ability to feel nothing.
He pulled at one that had eroded so much he had to kick it and smash it to smithereens to pull the files out.
It was like opening Pandora’s box and expecting sunshine to pour forth.
A veritable flood of emotion, memory, and agony spilled free of the mental drawer and absolutely annihilated his hold on himself.
He’d forgotten what it was like to feel everything so fully.
Everything of the last few years had felt like he was competing against time itself. And time was humanity’s greatest enemy. There was never enough of it and it actively fought back when you tried to beat it.
It was a losing game and in order to keep playing, he’d become a ghost.
He muted everything that made him human in order to survive.
Calculated.
Clinical.
Cold.
Jake was all of that.
Now, he felt everything.
He wanted to survive. He wanted to live.
Lingering as a phantom on the periphery of reality no longer appealed to him. He wanted to feel and touch and be. He wanted everything life had to give.
The bitter and the sweet. The hurt and the relief. All of it.
Jake just wanted.
And when Jake wanted something, he got it.
He pushed up on his hands. Curling his fingers into the gravelly dirt and ignoring the bark of pain as his nails cracked and split.
His blood mingled with the muck, and he clambered to his feet.
Everything ached and bled and felt so heavy he could barely put one foot in front of the other as he carefully headed down the tunnel he’d dropped into.
His throat was raw. Torn to shreds from smoke and screaming. His hands quaked and his mouth was so dry his tongue curdled in his mouth as he smacked his lips together and tried to create some lubrication.
It was useless. He needed water.
He needed to rest soon, or he would pass out in sheer fright and exhaustion.
It’s too late, Jake.
Give up.
Only fools persist in fighting when the odds are stacked.
Jake’s head throbbed as he thrashed it, as if to dispel the sinister crooning, and muttered, “The odds are always stacked. It’s how you play the system.”
The voice went quiet again, and he breathed a sigh of relief as he tripped over rock and wood, hands scrabbling at the walls to ensure he wouldn’t get himself lost.
He risked taking his phone out of his pocket, scowling at the shattered screen as message after message came through.
MC: Jake. You can’t just tell a woman you love her and then ignore her!
Answer me.
Please.
Just give me a sign. A smoke signal. Send a damn carrier pigeon if you have to! They’re saying there’s no way in or out. But I know better. You’ll find a way.
Keep going. Please don’t give up. You’re not alone in this. I won’t allow it.
If you die, I will hunt you down, drag you back and kill you again. You must live, Jake. Not for me, not for Hannah or Lilly, but for you. You will make it back to me.
He swiped them away. Deleting them. They made his heart shiver and fracture more. The rubious fissures would leave silver scars behind. He groaned as another came through and he immediately memorized the coordinates she gave him. Deleting the message once he had. He put all his remaining energy and will into planning his escape.
His mind wheeled with memories from before.  Prior to being forced into hiding, he had experienced a life of color and fluctuating joy. It wasn’t a perfect life, but it was his. The day he had to leave it all behind, he’d severed all strands of his old life and assumed the identity of many and none.
He’d learned a lot about humanity and its cruelty in that time. He knew how it worked.
Life was a battle against human cruelty. It always was and always would be. Wisdom, strategy, and hope were the only factors that could hope to gain over cruelty.
And his hope lived on.
Hope, he understood it lived with her now. He’d given her it and she had offered him her own. He would not waste it.
He flicked through his brain and memories, shelving what didn’t matter and keeping what did. Everything that made him ache, he kept. Everything that made him feel safe, he lost.
If safety meant being alone, lost in a mine until he either burned or starved to death, he didn’t want it.
He reached into the mental vault containing their chats.
Their conversation about her coming here was the most potent file he had, and it would fuel him to make it out.
She had complimented his research on the mine and he’d told her about some entrances/exits.
He informed her of the ones he thought were most likely to get him caught. It was a manipulative decision, so she wouldn’t get the stupid idea of following him.
He kept one exit loaded like a bullet in the back of his mind.
It was risky.
It was idiotic.
Still, Jake took off running for it.
The tunnel was narrowing as he traveled along it. He had to duck before long.
His heart still frothed behind his sternum. Relentless and out of time, with his sawing breath as the walls closed in on him.
He had to crouch now. His head scuffed off the rugged ceiling and he bit back a shout as the pain merged with that of the wound still leaking blood on the back of his skull.
He felt drained. His body became so weighty, he was grateful when the tightening passage forced him to his hands and knees.
Jake crawled and crawled. Palms scraped and searing as sweat irritated all his grazes. His eyes prickled with fresh tears as a draught of fresh air snaked into his nose.
Dread rose to swallow him, but he kept going. He didn’t know what awaited him on the other side, but it was better than dying alone, never to be mourned or found.
The fear of being arrested was so strong it almost halted him as he squeezed through the ever shrinking tunnel and felt like he was caught in a vice.
If he got stuck—No, he couldn’t think it.
He had to turn his fear into a weapon. Run from this place and reclaim his name. The sweat on his brow, the blood running through his veins; it was that of a survivor.
This was just another glitch.
He told himself that over and over as he army crawled through the crushing mine.
He was blind.
The darkness entrenched him.
It would entomb him if he allowed it.
His coat snagged on the rough wall and dragged him back. He shook his sore body as much as the tight space would allow and panted through his clenched teeth.
It kept sticking. He had stretched his hands ahead of him.
There was no room or way for him to tug the fabric free.
His heart stopped dead in his chest.
Helplessness stole his flagging fight, and he slumped into the dirt, hiding his filthy face in it.
Abruptly, Jake started sobbing like a child. Great, gasping cries tore from him and his entire body shuddered with it. So violent and soul destroying he couldn’t temper it.
No matter what he did, it went against him. He’d never worked with such horrendous odds. His brain was a mess of emotion and regret.
He wished he’d written everything he felt and hoped for them down and mailed the letter to her before he entered the mine, but he’d been cocky then. Too confident in his ability to escape any trap or cage.
Jake gave up and accepted his fate.
If he died, if that was his due, there was no stopping it. He’d been living off begged and borrowed and stolen time for years.
It had finally caught up to him.
He was so lost in defeat. Consumed by it. His throat contracted, and he felt like he might be sick.
He hoped he choked on it.
Make it quick.
“I don’t want to die,” He whispered without meaning to and his mouth kept moving, the words kept falling from his bloodstained lips, “Not like this, anything but this.”
His heart shriveled and went cold as he struggled and tried to shuffle forward. He couldn’t breathe properly. All his weight was on his front. His ribs felt bruised and cracked, every tiny inhale felt like a sledgehammer blow.
It is over, Jake. Feel that? The cold creeping in? Soon, it’s all you’ll know. This darkness? It’s all there is. All there ever will be. It’s what you –
“-- I don’t deserve this.” Jake growled with a certainty he’d never known.
Adrenaline coursed through him, lighting up his veins and filling him with new trembling energy as if someone had injected him with a drug.
He rocked and shook his body until his bones jolted and his skin felt too tight. He forced what little breath he had out through gritted teeth and felt the tendons in his neck straining as he dug his fingers into the dirt and put all his strength into pulling himself free.
The sound of fabric ripping caused his heart to start beating again.
He gave a laugh like shattering glass.
Unhinged and desperate as the momentum of his coat coming free shoved him forward a few feet.
From there, it wasn’t easy. He felt like a clumsy serpent as he slithered through the mine.
He kept laughing. His heart kept pounding.
The voice in his head was silent as his hands connected with something that fell away as he shoved at it.
Glorious, clean night air hit his sweaty face, and he gulped it down as he pulled himself out of the horrible tunnel.
It seemed to cling to him. Like invisible hands tugged on his ankles to keep him trapped. He refused to allow it.
Damp earth, long green grass, and dried leaves crunched under his hands as he lay on his back on the forest floor and stared at the starry sky.
He considered the spectacle of stars as the greatest gift he could have received. He analyzed it, finding the North star and thinking of the co-ordinates MC had given him. He quickly checked them on his phone before he threw it away, and was relieved when he discovered it wasn’t too far to make it there on foot.
If he headed in a North- Easterly direction, he could make it there at sunrise.
He didn’t bother looking toward Duskwood, didn’t need to know how close his pursuers might be or he’d lose his nerve.
He shakily got to his feet and started walking.
Time meant nothing to him as he traipsed through forest and open fields. He stayed away from the roads he knew were always busy.
In his current condition, some good samaritan would call for help thinking they were aiding him when in fact they’d be signing his death.
He was so tired. It clung to him like a shroud of smothering fog he would never break out of.
He kept moving.
Through shadow and moonlight, he kept walking and ignored the pain in his body as best he could.
There was no end to his exhaustion as pink tinged sunlight shimmered through the pines.
The sun was rising.
How strange, he thought, that his world could burn down around him and yet the sun still rose.
He eyed it and felt strange, like it was an abstract painting absolutely out of place in this world of cruelty, death, and flame.
No matter how deeply or irrevocably the world burned. No matter how thick the shadows grew and the amount the freezing darkness consumed, the sun would always rise.
It filled the world with light, warmth, and color and precious hope.
He felt the soft warmth kiss his hurting face, and it energized him as he broke out of the cover of trees and came to a halt in a motel parking lot.
Jake frowned, glancing around in suspicion and doubt as he failed to understand. Why would she send him here? He hadn’t stayed here. It was too out of the way.
And just how did she know of it?
He stood straight and fear thickened in his throat as his attention snagged on a window. The curtains had moved. He was sure of it.
He moved as though to sink back amongst the trees, but the creak of a door opening made his head snap toward it.
A small, slender hand poked through the gap in the door, beckoning him. He was moving toward it before he could give his feet the command.
His heart picked up speed again. His pulse and distress ratcheting up and infusing him with tension like someone was turning a screw too tightly.
He was only a few steps away from the door now. His skin felt too sensitive and everything hurt in some way. His throat felt like he’d been eating sandpaper and gravel.
The shake in his hands intensified, flight or fight. His nervous system couldn’t decide.
As he hesitated, a female voice trailed through the open door and it was like a salve on his exposed nerves. He had heard that voice, he could recognize it anywhere.
His heart raced for an entirely different reason as he listened to it.
“It’s safe. Come in and I’ll explain.”
Jake didn’t care about her explanation as the adrenaline left him so suddenly he drooped and nearly dropped to his knees.
He tripped through the door instead.
She didn’t give him time to rake his gaze over her the way he wanted to. She gripped him and forcefully dragged him into an embrace, causing him to groan in pain as it aggravated his many minor injuries.
She instantly pulled back, grimacing and apologetic.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t think. Here, I have supplies. I figured one of us would get shot or stabbed or maimed. It felt important to be prepared. Thankfully, the worst injury I’ve had is paper cuts. You don’t look like you’ve been so lucky. Are you bleeding anywhere? What do I do first? Are you burnt? You smell like someone roasted you over a spit! Are yo-”
Jake chuckled roughly at her babbling. Touched and amused by her care and thoughtfulness.
It was the first genuine laugh he’d had in years, and it turned into a cackle before long. It just slipped out of him and sounded more like crying by the end.
His gritty eyes closed as emotion swallowed him and he welcomed the darkness they offered.
It was familiar.
It was safe.
He woke hours later very confused and so stiff it felt like he was breaking his bones to sit up. His grunt of pain escaped his teeth as a lilting voice cut through the static in his mind.
“Oh, good. I was worrying. That’s nothing new, but you look like someone just dug you out of your grave. I cleaned and patched you up as best I could without stripping you. I thought I’d let you buy me dinner before we got to that stage!”
Her tone was light and filled with humor, but there was an edge of despair and anxiety in it that told him she’d fussed over him the entire time he slept.
His sluggish heart resided in his empty stomach as she approached him slowly like she thought he was an injured animal and she was afraid to spook him.
“Where are we? Why are you here? You promised to stay away.” He managed as he accepted the glass of water she offered him.
His fingers left dirty streaks on the glass as the dirt mingled with the condensation. The water was cold and crystal clear and he gulped it down to clear the sour taste out of his mouth.
She huffed at his words and waited for him to sink the water before she responded, “Typical. I come and help you and you scold me. Well, shove it.  If it weren’t for me and Alan, you would be dead or rotting in a cell. And I did stay away! I didn't go to the mine, did I?”
His gaze flew to her indignant face, lovely and open despite the fury razing hell in her narrowed eyes.
He felt shocked that he could speak because his tongue felt so thick in his mouth. “My apologies. I’m still—I’m sorry... Alan? I thought he would be more interested in helping them catch me?”
She smirked, tossing her hair over her shoulder as she sat down beside him.
“That was until I ripped him a new one. The fire helped most, but Alan is currently playing down your involvement to give us time. He’ll make contact with us once we find a safe place to stay.”
He opened his mouth to demand she go back home, and he’d message once he was safe, but she flung up a hand to silence him.
“None of that. I’ll explain better once we know the scope of the fallout in Duskwood. But I am coming with you. No, if ands or buts about it, Jake. I make my decisions, not you. The last time someone tried to decide for me, I bit them. Don’t make me bite you too. Are you in?”
Her eyes were hard and unwavering, not a sliver of doubt to be found.
Everything inside him protested against dragging her into his mess, but he was tired.
He was tired of being alone.
He was so tired of losing everything.
Four years of fatigue and depression sank through him like a millstone and he hung his head in defeat. He was in no condition to run alone, anyway.
And he didn't want to. It was selfish. It was daft. But he didn't care.
He hadn't expected to survive this long. Plus, she had been his reason to make it out. He sighed and let his shoulders curl inward. Having someone else to protect would keep him sharp and ready for anything. She must've sensed his resolve weakening.
She reached out and threaded her clean fingers through his muddy ones, dark and light; he thought stupidly as his skin tingled at the contact.
It had been so long since he’d been touched gently. With obvious affection and because someone wanted to, not because they had to.
He was used to bruises and hurt. This was — this was what he'd survived for.
He’d forgotten what it felt like as he met her gaze and felt his stomach fluttering with something that felt like excitement.
It felt like hundreds of tiny birds had taken flight in his abdomen and a frisson of tentative anticipation filtered through him.
Her eyes glittered and his mouth twitched with the want to smile as he gave his response.
“I’m in.”

After the End (part two)
“MC! It’s me, stop screaming!”
She gasped for air, causing a pause of her screaming. She couldn’t still see him properly, but the in the shadows she could see his dark hoodie.
“Jake?” she whispered and swallowed. Her saliva tasted like blood. She had probably bitten her lip again.
“Yes, it’s me”, he answered in a low voice, and she could hear worry in his tone. “You need to breathe. It’s alright, you’re alright.”
She did as she was told and tried to get a glimpse from his face. She could see his chin, covered in short stubble, and smelled his natural fragrance; musk and hint of green forest after the rain. She grasped his hoodie and tried to calm down. Her draws of breath were rattling, but even with their pace. The dizziness started to ease, and she felt her feet become steadier. When she finally managed to look up to his face, she saw pair of brown eyes, looking at her back.
“This was definitely not my plan”, she managed to say with a cackle. “I was coming to rescue you and not be rescued.”
She saw that the emotions in his face were changing fast, there was a glimpse of something she didn’t recognize and then he just looked angry.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” he asked and couldn’t hide his annoyance. “This is too stupid and reckless, even from you.”
“I know you’re mad, but could this wait? We need to get out of here”, she pleaded to him stubbornly. He hated when she pulled up plans like this, which put her in danger and had expected this kind of reaction from him. And he definitely hadn’t missed her tone of sassiness.
“You’re going to be the death of me”, he said furiously. “I told you that I’d contact you after I get out!”
She held his gaze and saw the glint of emotion again in his eyes. It wasn’t anger, but something else. She put her hand gently at his cheek and brushed it lightly with her thumb. His skin was so warm under her hand, and she felt like she had touched electric heater.
“You can yell at me later as much as you want”, she told him in a kind tone. “But now I am going to get you out of here first. Or you get me out, I don’t care, as long we both do get out. I have created a distraction and we should have enough time to get going without being noticed.”
He opened his mouth and she saw that he was going to interrogate her about her plan. She moved her thumb to his lips, shushing him. They didn’t have time for this.
“You have said many times, that you trust me. You need to do so now.”
He stayed quiet and after a while, he nodded. She suddenly realized that her finger was on his lips. They were soft and warm, and she felt her cheeks reddening. She withdrew her finger and grabbed his hand.
“Follow me.”
They walked in silence, following the stone piles where she had built them. She saw Jake looking at the marks approvingly, proving that she actually did had given some thought about her plan. She made sure that he wasn’t looking on her when they walked and stared at his back and face with every opportunity she had. His dark hair was short, he was tall, and she could see that he had muscular back. And when she lowered her gaze, she could see that he had firm bottom. When she realized that she was staring his butt, she blushed again heavily. Eyes up, she reminded herself and was just about to open a conversation, when Jake stopped. She was confused, why weren’t they moving?
“Ja- “she started but shut her mouth quickly when she saw his face. He looked alarmed and they listened the darkness together. She couldn’t hear anything. Suddenly he pulled her behind the corner of the tunnel before the crossroad and pressed her back against his chest, his hands around her waist. Jake switched the flashlight off and they stood in the darkness, leaning on the wall together. She swore she felt his heart pounding against her back, within the same rhythm than her heart. What was going on?
“There is someone in there”, the words were whispered so quietly that she thought she might had imagined them, but then she felt his breath behind her ear. The hairs in her neck rose instantly and she couldn’t help but shiver. She felt his arms on her waist tighten as a response. His fingers brushed her bare skin in between the shirt and jeans, and she shivered again, this time violently. The sensation of his fingers flashed through her whole body. She could hear his breathing getting tighter, mirroring her own, but he didn’t let go.
She kept her eyes looking at the darkness and finally she picked up the quiet tone of someone’s footsteps, and by the sound of them, it was a man. The voice was coming closer, starting to echo at the walls. She could see another light, illuminating the way behind the crossroad. They stayed in the dark, not to be seen and waited. She was on the verge of losing it, the man was so close, it would require him to just turn behind the corner and he would see them, there was nowhere to hide. She had been so loud while trying to bring herself down from her panic attack. Had the man heard her? The fingers in her waist started circling soothingly, getting her attention. She looked up and saw Jake's eyes looking directly at hers. They were assuring and steady, trying to tell her that she needed to calm down and he would take care of the man if needed. She opened her lips and tried to inhale more air quietly. He looked approvingly on what she was doing and set the rhythm for breathing with his fingers, drawing circles for every inhale and exhale. Breathe in, out, in and out…
The quietness was disturbed with a loud beeping, static and rattled voice, which was coming from a radiophone. She stopped breathing and heard rumbling voice, with couple of curse words in a grumpy tone.
“This is Stevenson, repeat the message, over”, she heard him say. There was again static noise and she heard him cursing again: “this fucking mine”. There was a sound of adjustments on the radiophone and then the voices cleared, apparently there haven’t been proper connection through the phones from where the man was coming from. He hadn’t had connection for the outside world and that’s why he was still in the tunnels when everyone else had left.
“Get out there, Stevenson. He isn’t in the tunnels, he left us a message. Return to starting point. Over”.
“Copy that. Over.”
She saw the light fading away and the footsteps got quieter with each step the man took away from them. She didn’t realize that she had been holding her breath for a minute now and tried to gasp air without making a noise. She felt the hands on her waist loosing up and soon they stepped out from the shadows.
“That was close”, she whispered, Jake nodded, and she continued. “I thought I had managed to lure them all out.” “What kind of message I have left?” Jake asked with a hint of laughter in his question. “I don’t recall leaving anything.” “There might or might not be a picture of man without a face with on every public screen in the city”, she stated carefully. “And some mocking text of “catch me if you can”, sent by the local electric company but signed from Ny-m0s to every phone in the area.”
“Every time I think you cannot surprise me anymore, you pull up something like this”, he laughed aloud now and nudged her gently. “Come on, lets go. We don’t want to run anyone else who also didn’t get the message of withdrawing the area.”
Soon they were at the bottom of the stairs towards the entrance. He didn’t let her go first but looked at her for confirmation.
“This is where I came in”, she told him and tried to peek at the top. “The area was emptied then.”
Jake took her hand and they started climbing the stairs cautiously. They had to move slowly, because she couldn’t see the steps properly from behind Jake, but he flashed the light for every step she took. When they finally felt the fresh air coming from top of them, they turned the light off and stumbled the stairs in dark. They tried to be as quiet they could, and soon she could see form of trees in front of her. They kept in low and crouched out from the entrance. The forest was silent, except for one owl which hooted in top of the trees somewhere.
She examined the area and saw the familiar hill where she had surveyed FBI agents before. “My car is around one kilometer that way.”
They started the walk towards the car, keeping their senses alert for every noise and movement. When she finally saw a glimpse of her car on top of the path, her heart was filled with joy. Jake had seen the car too and he glanced her with a smirk on his face.
“Am I allowed to ask now, what’s the plan?” he asked teasingly. “Or am I still just following you?” She blushed, again. Blushing had become a habit, what she didn’t want to have. But there was something about being with Jake, which made her anxious. Not in a bad way, she was more excited.
“Well, this part is something I left us to plan together. I have booked a cabin for two nights, which is located pretty close. We don’t have to go there, it was more like a plan B”, she explained and stumbled with her words. She was suddenly very nervous and being this close with Jake, didn’t help. She felt drawn to him, and while they had walked, she had unconsciously stayed close to him. She hadn’t given a much of thought about the afterwards of her plan. They had agreed on meeting in Duskwood after all of this, but the plan of that had been very vague from the beginning. She lowered her gaze, unsure what to say, and played with her car keys. She heard him stepping closer and kept staring at the ground.
She felt his hand below her chin, rising it slowly up, so she would have to look at him. She settled her eyes somewhere around his nose and didn’t realize that she had started to bite her lip again. They both were silent, and she mustered up all her courage and moved her eyes to look at him. He was also looking her, but not her eyes, but her lips.
She was so sure, that he was going to kiss her. She stopped biting her lip and opened her lips slightly and leaned forward. She saw Jake doing the same, still staring at her lips. She could feel her heart pounding fiercely, demanding to have this moment. There was something setting in her abdomen and fluttering.
Owl hooted again somewhere in the distance, and it broke their illusion. Jake let go of her chin with a small laugh and put his hands on his pockets and she took a step backwards. Her cheeks were hot again and she didn’t know what to say to him.
“Let’s go to the cabin, and think about our next move tomorrow”, he said, clearing his voice with a small cough. She nodded as a response and opened the car doors with her keys. They got seated and she started the engine. She told Jake that she didn’t see any roads closed on her way there, but they should be prepared for those now, since FBI thought he had escaped.
“Do they know what you look like?” she asked nervously, and Jake shook his head. “What if they need to see our ID’s?
“I have a spare ID for situations like this”, he assured. “This isn’t my first encounter with them.”
“What about me? Do they know my identity?” she was afraid to ask. Jake nodded.
“It is very likely that they do, since they have been trying to hack your phone before”, he reminded her. “But I have already gotten you a fake ID, so you’ll use that.”
“You what?” she was amazed. Jake seemed to realize that this was something that they had not discussed previously and started to look uncomfortable.
“I should have told you”, he muttered and scratched his back of head, looking very intimidated. “I just wanted to be prepared for everything.”
“So, you had been prepared me to be needing spare ID’s?” She asked amused, still wondering his motives.
“I have been thinking about some scenarios, where they would be necessary”, he stated and somehow sounded embarrassed as well. Then it drawn to her, he had gotten her fake ID’s because she would need them when they would be together. He had every intention to keep their deal.
“Thank you”, she replied quietly and felt very emotional.
“I promised to protect you”, he simply stated.
This statement calmed her nervousness and she started steering the car away back to the road. Jake told her to shut her phone and remove the battery before they would go, and she did as she was told.
“We should still practice, what we say if we encounter them”, she thought about the possible road patrols.
“Easy”, he smirked again and leaned back on his seat. “We are a couple who have come to visit Duskwood’s famous Pine Glade Festival. Perfect cover story.”
Jake's words hit her consciousness like a hammer, and she swallowed. Something warm pooled in her stomach and she smiled.
“Sounds convincing enough.”
They did manage to avoid all the road patrols and saw only one car during their drive to the cabin, driven by some old lady. During the drive she could feel him watching her and tried not to pay any attention to that. Once she was convinced that his eyes were looking somewhere else, she looked at him with corner of her eye. He was still watching her and met her gaze. She felt his gaze as intimidating and looked quickly back on the road. Her skin felt like it was on fire. When they finally saw the cabin in the end of the road, she finally let herself relax.
She had received a text message from the owner, who had told her where she could find the keys. There was a key box with a code hanging on the gate, and she got it open with the code easily. The cabins’ location was perfect, there was no neighbors, and it was in the lake area. Water carried all the noises easily, so they could hear a possible car arriving from kilometers away. The road was ending in the yard of the cabin, so they were sure that if there was car coming up, it was coming to them.
The cabin itself was simple, but cozy. There were two rooms, other one being combined living room and small kitchen area, and behind of it was the bedroom. Quick peek behind the bedroom’s door revealed to her that there was only one bed. She hadn’t paid too much attention on the pictures when booking, but rather on the location. She didn’t want to think about the situation with the bed just now, so she tried to think something else.
“You’re probably hungry”, she stated, and he nodded.
“Didn’t plan on getting stuck in the mines when I left”, he replied and gestured towards her backpack. “Did you bring something to eat?”
She opened her bag and pulled out the eggs, bread, and ramen noodles.
“Not a gourmet food, but should ease up your hunger”, she apologized. She also had some protein bars somewhere in her bag, if needed.
They cooked their food in silence and kept bumping each other’s in the small kitchen area, muttering “sorry” under their breaths. The situation had become so awkward, and she didn’t know what to do. This was their first time actually seeing each other’s and even though they had texted for weeks now, it was very different to be with him in the same room. But every time they touched, even by accident, the feel of his skin touching hers was giving her small jolts. She wondered if he felt them too.
They continued their silence when they ate and only noise in the room were their cutleries clinking against the plates. She kept looking at her plate, until she finished her food and then returned to the sink to wash her plate. She heard him moving behind her back and somewhere deep she hoped that he would come to her, take her in his arms and told her that everything would be alright. The sound of the door revealed to her that he had gone to bedroom and when he returned, he had pillow and a blanket in his arms.
“You’ll take the bed and I’ll sleep on the couch”, he said and didn’t look at her. Her emotions betrayed her and showed for a couple of seconds disappointment and sadness in her face, until she could control herself to put up a neutral face.
“Thank you”, she replied and finished drying up her plate. Jake told her that she was going to take a shower, and she nodded. The air in the cabin had become heavy and she felt the urge to go out. She didn’t put her shoes on when she slipped to the porch. It was a beautiful night; the sky was clear, and the stars were visible. She sat down on the porch’s step and looked the lake, which glimmered from the light of the moon. She was exhausted and all her limbs felt heavy. Her sight was blurry, and she blinked her eyes to get rid of the tears, which had started to water her eyes.
She wondered what would happen now. She had succeeded with her plan and had got Jake out from the mines, but what would come next? Would he continue his hiding alone and leave her in Duskwood? Would they keep their promise for a one day together and then he would disappear? He had promised to her that he wouldn’t leave her, but that was before the FBI had gotten into this mess. Would this be their only night together? But then he had gotten her new identity? Shouldn’t that imply that he meant to keep her close?
He had told her that he loved her, and she had returned the feelings. But now when they were together, the words didn’t come as easy when chatting, and she concluded that this was probably the moment when Jake would have gone offline. The situation of being together was new to them both, but she did know him, he wasn’t some mystery stranger. He had been the source of her feelings for a long time now, they had real connection. Even when everything was complicated as now, she was sure that she loved him, even if she wouldn’t find a courage to say those words aloud to him. She felt being at peace now when she knew that he was safe and even if their roads would separate tomorrow, he would still be safe, and she was glad that she had part of it.
She smelled him before she heard him, the fragrance of his was intoxicating. It was combination of the shower gel and familiar musk, with a hint of green forest. She inhaled deeply, trying to memorize his smell. He sat down next to her on the step and looked at the view with her.
“Are you going to yell me now?” she asked carefully, trying to keep her tone light. He turned to look at her, and probably saw the sadness in her face, which she was so keen on hiding. He sighed.
“No”, he replied and took her hand on his, laying them both in between them. She looked at their joined hands, her hand was smaller but a perfect fit with his. She brushed her thumb against his palm. He looked thoughtful, like he was contemplating what to say.
“It was still a reckless plan”, he continued. “I told you not to put yourself in danger, especially for me.”
“But you did put yourself in danger for me”, she argued quietly, giving him a stern look. “It wasn’t fair. You knew that I would have accepted his offer. And now we know that it was Richy, he wouldn’t had hurt me.”
“We didn’t know that then. I promised to you to keep you safe”, he responded and drew circles in her palm in return. “That no matter what, I would protect you.”
“You cannot keep sacrificing yourself for me, you know”, she stated and looked at him with hunger in her eyes, but she didn’t know that. Something shifted in the air and her mouth felt dry. He held her gaze and she could see the moon reflecting from his pupils, which were dilated. “Remember what you asked me?”
“I have asked from you a lot and you had filled all my requests without a hesitation”, he murmured back, not taking his eyes off her. The familiar flutter in her abdomen was there again, this time with heat. “You were so trusting from the beginning, and I have no idea why.”
“It felt right, it always felt right, even when others tried to convince me that I shouldn’t trust you”, she confessed, and her voice sounded fragile. The world had stopped around them and nothing else existed in it except them. “You asked me to see all of this with you till the end.”
“I did”, he answered and slowly, lifted her hand towards his face. “And now it is after end.” She followed her hand with her gaze, and all she could think about was his lips. He pressed them against her hand, and she thought her heart was going to explode. Small sigh escaped her lips and Jake's pupils seem to dilate even more. The heat from her lower abdomen was anxiously waiting, I need more, more and everything.
“So, what comes after end?” she whispered, her eyes were still fixed on her hand on his lips. The sight of it was mesmerizing. She felt her hand trembling slightly but brushed his lips with her thumb for a second time today. Jake pecked lightly her finger.
“Us.” He brushed her loose curl away from her face with his other hand. The only thing she could think that she wanted to Jake touch her forever. “If you still want me.” He tucked the curl behind her ear and touched the side of her face lightly. She thought that this might feel the same when you’re hit by the lightning. Every nerve she had was on fire and she gasped again, not realizing that it was vocal one.
Then his lips were crashing on hers and they were greedy from the start. Nothing was careful in their first kiss, it was demanding and overwhelming, she could feel the neurons transmitting messages of pleasure to every part of her body. Her brain was finally exploding, and all she could do was to return the kiss. Jake’s lips were eating her alive, sucking her lower lip and his tongue found a way in her mouth. It was exploring and evasive, he was claiming her and all she wanted to do was to give herself to him. Her hands were all over him, trying to grasp every inch of him, dragging her closer to him. Jake lifted her up from the stairs and pulled her to his lap, and her legs quickly found their place when she straddled in his lap, not interrupting the kiss even for a second. She moaned in his mouth, when his hands found her back, pulling her closer, closer, and closer to him. The anticipation had been building up for weeks now and all they could do, was to set it free. The fire burning inside of her was eager to be unleashed.
Their lips separated for a moment and they both gasped air. She was panting, her nipples were rock hard, and she hadn’t never been so aroused in her life than now. “Don’t you dare to leave me”, she told him and pressed her lips again to his. That was all it took, and if she had thought Jake was forceful before, her words had evaporated the very last drop of any resistance from him now. They crashed in each other’s again and again, their mouths were hot and when his lips latched on her neck, she heard a guttural sound coming from her own throat. He sucked and nibbled her neck and when he found again the very same spot where she had moaned, he gave it special attention with tongue. She vaguely realized she was constantly grinding him in his lap, but everything felt so good, that the thought got lost somewhere back in her brains. His cold hands were under her shirt, causing her to shiver and Jake continued his trail of kisses towards her cleavage. She didn’t know where her own hands were, but they were touching something warm and covered.
When his fingers found her bras, she was shaken with the touch and the pure need which felt consuming her. She pulled with his help her shirt away and the couple of seconds where his lips had been away from her, felt like hours and she demanded them back with hers. His hands were in her hair, pulling her head back, exposing her whole neck to him. She wanted him so much that it hurt, her cunt clenched with need and she grinded again in his lap against the hard bulge. Jake growled and his hands traveled to her breasts, which were still hidden inside of her bra. He pulled the cups of the bras down, exposing her hard nipples. He circled the areolas with his fingers and continued his trail of kisses from her neck down towards her breasts. He sucked his thumb and then flicked her right nipple with it, and she couldn’t help voices of pleasure escaping her lips, throwing her head back.
“You’re so fucking beautiful”, she heard him say before she noticed his lips back on her right breast. She focused his hard cock against her groin and rolled her hips, putting pressure on it. He responded with a muffled vibration around her nipple, and then he sucked it hard. His act jolted million bolts in her sex, and she was drenched. She heard herself moaning his name, which just kept fueling his actions more. He played her other breast with his left hand, changing hands when his focus with his mouth was changed.
“Please”, she pleaded, and her hands were rubbing his cock through his trousers. “I need – “
She didn’t have to finish her sentence, because he lifted them both up, she still in his lap. They stumbled back inside, and she let him carry her while she was sucking his earlobe. This caused him to misstep, and they crashed in a wall, she got pressed between the wall and Jake. She tried to unbutton his jeans while he was doing hers, they pulled his shirt off together and Jake continued his mission to get her trousers off. She quickly looked around and pulled them together in the couch, where he laid in top of her, finally getting rid of her jeans. She felt his hands on her bum and lifted her ass higher as a reflex. He grabbed her knickers waistline and she saw him to look at her for a reassurance. She responded by pulling him in a fierce kiss and made sure that he understood that she was all in.
She felt his finger finding their way between her wet folds and the sound which came out of her mouth was inhuman. The finger circled her clit, before flicking it gently and she lost it. She moaned his name again and again; her whole body was shaking, and she was drowned in a bliss. His finger was rubbing and circling her clit with steady pace, his mouth was again on her breasts and her hands were… inside of his trousers. She didn’t remember how her hands got in there (and when they did get his trousers off?), but she was stroking his cock and Jake pushed himself on her hand. The lips from her breast unlatched and her hands got moved away, when she realized in her blurry haze, that something was on her entrance. When he slipped a finger inside of her, she cried and clenched around his finger. His right-hand fingers were still focusing on her clit, while he inserted a second finger from his left hand inside of her. The fingers moved from inside out repeatedly, pumping and the pressure of rubbing of her clit was increasing. Something was building inside of her, and only she could do, was to make incoherent voices. “Oh, oh, Jake – “, she cried, and she felt his mouth on her stomach, peppering the sensitive area with kisses. She had never felt this good; everything was fireworks and exploding neurons.
“Come for me”, he told her in a raspy voice and curled his fingers inside of her. And she did. Everything went white, she trashed and could hear herself screaming his name. She was so high, the sensation of bliss swallowed her as a whole and cherished her for a time which felt like hours. When she finally came back to her senses, she saw him looking at her with such an intense gaze filled with lust. She grabbed his face between her hands and kissed him.
“I love you”, she said against his lips. She meant it with every cell in her body. “I love you. I love you.”
“I love you”, he murmured back, nibbling her lip with his teeth.
She pushed him off from her and she managed to get a glimpse of his confused face, which soon vanished when she reversed their previous position. She straddled again his lap, and grinded once more on his cock. This time, there wasn’t fabric in between them, and her wetness was all over him. Now it was his turn to shiver, and she felt his hands pressing her bottom firmly while moving her body on his cock. “I didn’t pack condoms with me to my rescue mission-”, he confessed, “- didn’t seem necessary”. She told him that she had been on birth control pills for a couple of years now. With that settled in between them, she kissed him once again and slowly sank into him. They both moaned in unison and tried to get adjusted with the new feeling. She felt so full and stretched, and she repeated the movement of getting off and then sliding herself back to his cock couple of times, and it every time it kept feeling better and better. Then she tried rolling her hips. The sensation of the movement hit them gently like a knife in brain, it just felt so right and good. She rolled her hips again, this time faster and he groaned from somewhere deep in his guts. He supported her movements with her hands, and when she moved up and down with his cock, occasionally rolling her hips, fastening the pace with each movement. It was now his turn to form incoherent words, but she could pick up words like “amazing”, “fuck”, and “beautiful” repeatedly. He pulled her upper body closer to him and kissed her breasts again, occasionally giving the nipple gently tug with his teeth.
She felt another wave of orgasm coming up, her movements started to get irrational and all she could think about was how she wanted to do this with him forever. She got herself up too much and his cock slipped out of her, but before she could sink back in, he had lifted her and turned her on her back side on the couch. He grabbed her right leg and lifted it towards his chest and entered her again. She helped herself up from the couch with her elbows and watched him pumping into her where they connected. It was the most erotic sight she had never seen and when he rubbed her clit with his thumb while pressing his fingers against her lower abdomen, she exploded abruptly again, chanting his name.
She heard him grunting and his pumps were irrational, hitting her cervix relentlessly over and over again. She looked at his face when he came, the emotions of lust, pleasure and the final climax was the sight she wanted to burn on her retinas. They locked their eyes together and her expressions of love was mirrored from his face.
“I love you”, he told her again, panting with shortness of breath.
“And I love you”, she repeated with a smile, before she reached out to kiss him.

Author Notes: Whew! I am so overwhelmed with all your comments and likes on part one! I am myself's worst criticizer, it's always terrifying to post my stories.
There is at least one more chapter on this story, but I'm supposed to work on my thesis and that unfortunately is taking lot of my time. I'd love to write longer stories, but I don't think that is possible in current situation of mine. I can still say with a good confidence that chapter three is posted in couple of days.
I hope you enjoy this chapter, and I would love to have comments, likes and reblogs, if you think this would be worth it. *3*
p.s. Birth control pills doesn't protect from STD's, so be good kids and use protection when necessary. Jake and MC were irresponsible, but let's forgive them. It has been so, so long. :D

Warnings: Beside containing ep 10 spoilers, some swearing and I believe nothing else, but as usual, if you stumble upon something, please let me know 😊
A/N: Ok, I'm sorry, but I just cannot come to terms with not knowing 100% what happened to our beloved hacker at the end, so here I am! 😁
Oh, and this is the first time I am writing a GN!MC, so please, if you see any mistakes concerning that, do let me know so I can correct it :) Also, thank you @yuvon-augold79 for your advice and help!
A/N2: Ok, please, I beg you, as you read this, just don't go searching too much credibility for the mine events part, this is just fiction/fanfiction after all, and I just wanted to give me some concrete closure, be it possible or not. Thank you in advance! Hope you will like it! 💚
Jake: If I could deactivate the fake stream and transmit the cameras' real images instead
Then that way we might be able to find Hannah and Richy.
Jake press send on his chat with Mc focusing quickly back on the comptuer in front of him. He already spent way too much time in this room but if he succeeds doing it, the chance for him finding Hannah and Richy grow exponentially.
MC: Oh, you haven't heard yet
Alan just escorted Hannah out of the mine
„What!?“ he blurts out not believing his eyes and grabs his phone.
Jake: Hannah is safe?
MC: Yes :)
Closing his eyes for a moment, he takes a deep breath and exhales relieved that Hannah is finally safe. But she wasn't the only one they needed to find.
Jake: But what about Richy?
MC: Alan will find him
Jake: All right.
I must leave this mine immediately.

Reluctantly, he peels his eyes from his phone screen and tucks it to his pocket. It was time to get the hell out of this place. And fast.
Unfortunately, that is not going to be an easy task.
With no knowledge in what part of the mine Michael might be exactly, the map of the mine on his phone being of no use and the hatch at the Grimrock  locked, it's going to be extremely hard to leave this place.
Not to mentione that most likely all the known exits are probably guarded with cops, or the FBI agents, it's going to take a miracle for him to leave this place unnoticeable.
But that's not going to stop him from trying. He made a promise to Mc, and there was nothing that's going to stop him from keeping that promise. Especially not now when he finally managed the courage to confess his feelings to them.
It's been so long since the last time he felt like this – since he felt so alive. With everything that happened to him, he forgot how good that feeling was, how everything gets a different meaning when you have something to look forward to. Or rather to say someone.
And it is amazing how fast one can get used back to that feeling again, especially with the right person. So damn right he will do everything he can to get out of here alive.
But first thing first – he needs to get back to the higher level, it will definitely be more probable to find a way out from there. And even if it was a big risk, he should try to use the same ladders he took to get down here. Finding a new set of ladders blindly might take him way too much time.
Reaching the ladders, he carefully starts climbing. He tries to focus his hearing for any signs of movement, but the sound of his own heart beating uncontrollably made it hard for him.
While climbing, he remembers he saw a side tunnel not that far down from the beggining of the shaft. He should try using it rather than going back all the way up and risk getting caught immediately.
When he reached the side tunnel, he carefully takes his phone out from his pocket, holding the ladders tightly with his other hand. He turns the flashligh on and points it at the tunnel.
The side tunnel was definitely used in the past – there were still wires with the lights on each side of it, and that kinda gave him some hope that this tunnel could maybe take him to some other useful part of the mine. Hopefully.
There was only one way to find out.
Not even a few steps in, he had to get into an uncomfortable half-crouching position to continue through it, slowing him down. He just hoped it won't take him long to reach the end of it – this place was very unstable, it was hard to keep the thought of this tunnel collapsing out of his head.
Luckily, he soon found himself reaching the end of it, ending up in what looked like another main tunnel. Streching a bit, he notice that the lights on the wall in this part of the tunnel are working, and he wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. But what he did know was that he needs to keep moving.
The tunnel had only two options – either take left or right – and if he calculated correctly by the position of the shaft and the side tunnel, it would be better to continue on the left and make some distance from the Grimrock entrance.
The eerie silence of the tunnel was not helping in making him any less jittery, and the sudden thought how he told Mc earlier about the catastrophe that happened here all those years ago, and allegedly 'calls of the deceased workers' still being heard echoing through the mine makes his skin crawl.
Get a grip, Jake, and focus! he scolds himself and shakes his head with a low chuckle, focusing back on the path in front of him. He knew better than to believe in some old ghost stories, but he couldn't deny the fact that this place was definitely creepy.
„Oh, fuck!“ he curse outloud after a while, coming to a dead end. The semi circular room he reached was blocked at the other end, and after a bit more thorough examination, he had no other option but to retrace his steps.
A sudden loud boom of an explosion cuts through the eerie silence of the mine.
„What the...“ his eyes turn wide, both from fear and unexpectedness of it. What the hell was happening? He better ask Mc what is going on, and make sure everyone is fine.
But the moment his hand went for his pocket, the whole place started vibrating, immediately followed by a violent shaking, and he barely managed to keep himself from losing his footing.
The walls around him began to crumble, and he had just enough time for the thought how, after everything, his promise to Mc might end unfulfilled. And that thought pained him extremely.
Then everything went dark.
~ ~ ~ ~
His eyelids fly open and he gasps for air, instantly followed by the rapid coughing attack. His mouth were full of dust and he definitely didn't want to swallow any of it.
When his cough subsided and his eyes adjusted to his surrounding, he tries to sit up and immediately wince in pain clutching his shoulder. He had no idea if his shoulder was dislocated or just extremely bruised, but the pain in it was strong. He desperately needed his backpack.
Being on a run for all these years at least thaught him one thing – always keep some essentials in you backpack. So knowing that he had some strong painkillers and a bottle of water in it relieved him a bit.
Pushing some rocks and debris of off his legs, he was able to move more easily. Slowly, but not withouth some more painful wincing, he manages to take the backpack off his back.
Thankfully, the water bottle survived and he immediately takes two painkillers with as little water possible. He had absolutely no idea how long he might be here, so being cautious with his water consumption would be a smart move.
Allowing himself a moment, he close his eyes and leans on the wall waiting for the painkillers to do their magic. He was aware they won't help completely, his shoulder was pretty beaten up, but it was better than nothing. And he couldn't actually believe how extremely lucky he was to come out of this with only a beaten up shoulder and some negligible cuts. It really is a miracle he is still alive and kicking. Well, not kicking maybe, but close.
Few minutes later, he reach for his pocket only to take out his completely borken phone. He snorts at the sight of it - he was already lucky enough as it is, so something was bound to go against him.
Taking the flashlight from his backpack, he push himself against to wall to stand up. This place was now even more unstable than before, and he definitely didn't want to stick around here more than it was necessary. Turning the flashligh on, he start to inspect the place.
His hope in finding a way out of here soon began to fade the more he looked around - no matter what side he turned to, everything was completely blocked. But when he turned his gaze up, his heart jolted with excitement.
The collapse revealed a hole in the ceiling of the wall, or he just didn't had a chance to notice it before, but that was irrelevant now.
Upon taking a closer look at it, he saw that there were some kind of a wooden boards, placed conveniently to resemble a ladder, and surpisingly looked pretty sturdy, too.
Now, he only had to figure out how to climb up there, and fast - the pain killers did start to work and his pain bacame much more bearable, but he was positive that won't last for very long.
With again some unknown luck on his side, there was just about enough stones and debris laying under the hole already, so it didn't take him too long to add some more and make sure it is safe enough for him to climb it and reach the boards.
Collecting his stuff, he slowly starts up the pile and peeks head first into the hole. Straightening up, he see that the first board is at the level of his hips, wich made it much easier for him to start climbing considering his shoulder injury.
Carefully making his way up, the thought that his climb will soon end in another dead end scared him. And that was exactly what happened.
Screaming out every possible curse that he could think of didn't really help in changing his sittuation, but what else was he suppose to do.
And when the place once again rapidly began to shake, there was notthing else for him to do but to laugh "I guess my luck finally ran out."
The pieces of the wall crumbling and hitting him gradually became larger and larger, one of those hitting at his injured shoulder almost making him loos his grip of the boards. Not that it would matter anyway, because if the shaking doesn't stop he is screwed either way.
Unfortunately, the shaking just intensified, but that was actually a good thing - because in that moment another hole opened up above him, and without giving it much though, he rush towards it, and soon fills his lungs with a breath of fresh air.
Hastily, he pulls himself out taking a few steps away from the hole just to be on the safe side before collapsing to the ground.
Turning on his back he tries to calm his rapid breaths, and finally, as he gaze at the starry sky above him, it hits him that he made it out alive and kicking.
Not a second later, he again begins to laugh, a bit hysterically this time, not noticing that the tears started rolling down his face "Piece of cake."

TWO MONTHS LATER
„Hello, Mc.“ Chief Alan Bloomgate answers his phone without bothering to check at the caller's ID. He knew who it was the moment his phone started to ring - they've been calling every day, at the exact same time in the evening for the last two months, inquiring the same thing. And each time his heart sank lower for giving them the same damn answer.
They might had a shaky begining, but he grew more fond of them with each passing day. Not to mention, that he did feel bad for not believing them from the start of this whole thing with Miss. Donfort, but what's done is done, he can't change any of that.
And nothing of that can change the fact that he had no new information to tell them. Not yesterday, not today, and probably not tomorrow.
He takes a deep breath „You know, Mc, maybe you should head back home for a while, hmh? I understand, you want to be here in case something changes, and I know you think you're doing what is best, but you're just torturing yourself like this.“
He couldn't bring hiself to say exactly what he meant, but he knew Mc were smart, and they perfectly understood the hidden meaning behind his words.
It's been two months, and with the rainy season that started in Duskwood, it would take them forever to safely check every part of the mine that collapsed. And lets be honest here, how long can one survive in such harsh conditions after all.
„Thank you for your concern, Alan, but I think I'll just stick around for now.“
Ofcourse they will, he already knew that was the answer he will recieve from them. And honestly, he couldn't blame them, he would probably be the same if the roles were reversed. He himself knew very well how difficult it was to give up on something. Even harder on someone.
„Very well, Mc. 'Till tomorrow, then.“
~
At the other side of Duskwood, Mc desperately lowers their phone on the bed after the call with Chief Alan. It's been three weeks since they arrived here and made Mrs. Walter's motel their temporary home.
They knew Alan was right, but how could they just leave!? No, that is out of the question! The chances might be close to zero, but until there are some firm evidence, they are staying right where they are.
They grab back their phone and opet the chat with Jessy - some distractions would do them good, and they were positive Jessy would feel the same.
Just as they were about to start typing, the screen of the phone turns completely black. "What the hell!?!" they protest, pushing nervously on the side button in hope to make the phone working again.
Suddenly, the screen flashes and a familiar symbol appears on it.
They stare in awe at the Nymos eye floating on their phone screen, grabbing the phone tighter with shaky hands as the loud sound of their heart frantically beating echoes in their ears.
The screen flash once again and Nymos eye disappears, but there was now a pointer flashig and the letters begin to appear on the screen.
I apologise for my lateness
:)
But it is as I promised you
We shall see each other in Duskwood
They waited nervously for another message to come on, but the screen stayed unaltered. Frustrated, they groan out loud "Arghh, what's that suppose to mean!?"
A few seconds later, all the previous messages disappear and another one starts forming.
Knock, knock, Mc :)
They watch even more confused than before as the screen gets back to normal as if nothing happened. But when a knock came at the doors of their motel room, in a flash they cross the distance to it and open them abruptly.
With one hand on the door, and placing the other defiantly on the hip, they glare at the young black-haired man in front of them "You're late!"
The young man nods his head respectfully "My apologies, again. But there were some...inconviniencess I had to take care of first."
Mc raise their eyebrow "Inconviniences you say. All right. And is that over and done now?
"It is." the young man shortly comments.
"Good." Mc replies. "So, what now?"
"Now" the black-haired starts taking a step closer to them, his eyes flashing with a devilish glow "I will ask you one last time."
His closeness made their skin crawl with goosebumps, and his eyes were so hypnotizing, it was hard for them to concentrate. Swallowing hard, they manage to find their voice "Ask me what?"
The young man smiles "Do you still want to be with me?"
Mc smiles back and close the remaining distance between them, wrapping their arms around his neck. Before their lips finally met, they softly whisper "Always."

Y/n's really leaving.
It's the mantra that kept playing over Jessy's head like a broken record player.
As Jake dropped the call, you hadn't had the chance to spare them any more glances as you prepared your things. You had inspect the gun you have with you along with its ammunition multiple times already. You even took out a hunting knife and place it in a holster wrapped around the side of your leg.
She shivered at the thought you even had to use them.
When you confessed about your true self, what she said was true. Nothing had changed about what she thought of you. You're still Y/n, the one she had grown to care and love.
Yes, love. She knew love is such a deep word to use when she had only met you not too long ago. She believed before that finding love online is futile, and it was difficult to establish trust with some strangers she met online. Her boyfriend was able to cheat on her after years of being physically together, what more can someone from miles away where they'll be away from her sight and touch?
But when you came, all these doubts seemed to wash away. The fact you made her feel safer more than anyone else just by merely being on a phone with her, making her feel special just by asking her on a virtual date, making sure she's okay and the occasional sleep calls with you, none of the people she had dated made her feel the same way you do and you weren't even here physically.
There's no room for doubt anyway. Not when you had risked your life for this group many times already.
Now as she watch your back, ready to risk your life for the last time, she realized that you really are determined to go.
And she didn't have the heart to stop you.
She wanted Hannah and Richy back. She really does. But at the expense of you? That's something she finds hard to accept. She knew you were fully capable, but that doesn't do anything to ease her worries.
What if you get hurt?
What if you don't come back?
The mere thought clenches her heart so painfully that breathing felt like a chore now.
"Guys, please don't give me that look."
The cabin was so silent that the request that left your lips seemed louder than ever.
****
The next few minutes of preparation were a lot of crying on the girls and Thomas' end. Dan, well, his tipsy ass kept passing you drinks (that Lilly always takes away from you). You assumed that's his way to say 'Be careful.'
You appreciate what he's doing though. You didn't want to leave them feeling like this. Like they just sent you to your death and they can't do anything about it.
After leaving everyone's safety to Dan, you decided it's time to go.
You were surprised when Jessy volunteered to walk you to the porch. You assumed she wanted to say goodbye properly.
The porch was bathed in moonlight when you stepped outside, casting long shadows on the wooden planks. You turned to her, her red hair illuminated by the soft glow.
"Jess," you began. "I'm sor—"
"Don't," she sniffed, stopping you from your statement. "I'm sorry I'm making it hard for you to leave. F-for... for being selfish." Her voice cracked. "I just... it's dangerous and I— God. I just didn't want you to get hurt. I'm sorry..."
You couldn't help but wrap her in your arms. You held her close, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "You've got nothing to apologize for, baby."
"There's a lot. And a lot to thank for, too," she breathed, leaning into your embrace for dear life. "And I'd like to tell all of them to you once you come back."
"You mean..." Your eyes widened at her implications.
"Yeah... I'm letting you go." The way she lets out those words seemed like it's physically hurting her. She lets out a watery laugh, "and It's not like my opinion matters this time."
You couldn't believe what you are hearing. You leaned back to her embrace, hands carefully gripping her by the shoulder. Puffy, tear-filled eyes met your own.
But they are not begging you to not go this time, but begging you to come back.
"It matters." You reached out and gently cupped her cheek, your thumb brushing against her skin, eager to make your point across. "It sounds so screwed up and yet," you paused, your eyes boring into her own with great intensity. "you can tell me to stay, and I will."
Whatever may happen tonight is a huge gamble to play.
Lose and you will lose everything.
Win.
That's all there is to it.
Fight and win.
You can't afford to lose. Not now.
"No... No, Y/n." She shook her head gently, her touch on your hands warm and comforting. "We both know that's not who you are."
"Jessy..." Your eyes softened drastically.
"Save Hannah and Richy, okay?" She took hold of your hands on her cheeks, her voice quivering but determined. Despite the tears running down her cheeks, there was a fierce resolve in her expression. "If there's anyone who could do it, it would be you, Y/n/n."
Her words hit you deep, like a surge of energy coursing through your veins. She had an unwavering belief in you, and it only made you more determined to succeed. The lump in your throat grew, and you didn’t trust your own voice enough to speak without breaking. And so, you did the only thing you thought would convey your emotions best at that moment.
Leaning in, you brushed your lips against hers in a tender kiss. It was a mixture of longing and reassurance, a promise that you'd come back to her. There was a softness in the way your lips met, a silent exchange of emotions that words could never fully capture. When you finally pulled away, her eyes were teary but determined.
She tasted like salt from her tears, the faint sweetness of strawberries, and the familiar comfort of home.
"I love you," she whispered as you both separated, her breath warm against your lips. Your eyes widened at her confession, a mix of surprise and joy filling your chest. "Don't," she breathed, eyes still closed. "I'll wait for you to say it back once you come back. I just want to say it."
"You're no fair, Miss Hawkins." A watery laugh escapes you, and you couldn’t resist the pull any longer. You leaned in, capturing her lips in another tender kiss.
"Just want to make sure, Agent," she replied, her voice holding a hint of teasing. "Now go, save our friends, and come back to me."
It looks like you have to speed up the process because waiting for days to say it back is going to kill you, you’re sure.
Despite everything, despite the danger that lay ahead, you found yourself smiling.
You were still under the same sky, and somehow, that thought gave you comfort.
Everything’s going to be okay.

"Any updates on Michael's whereabouts?"
These were Jake's first words to you as he entered the car. You didn't have to look to know it was him. The same monotonous voice can be recognized from miles away. The heavy door of the car clicked shut, sealing the two of you in the confined space.
Oh, and of course. How could you forget? The guy loves his comfy hoodie so much, his mask, and his favorite beanie that his mom personally crocheted for his birthday. Even in these circumstances, he still clung to his attire like a security blanket.
"None so far," you settled on as a reply.
You started the engine once again and sped past the mini stop you and Jake agreed upon on. It was a little far from the cabin but it was relatively closer to Jake's hotel.
Tonight was cold and you wouldn't really blame Jake for his chosen clothing. However, this type of cold is something a warm coffee couldn't handle. It was the type where it send chills down your spine, you felt a sense of impending doom, not for you but for Hannah and Richy. Time is against you two and you know from experience that time is an opponent you cannot win against.
"You know you really don't have to do this."
"I have to. It is the best option we have. You have put yourself in danger for long enough. Listening to Michael's demand would be suicide. That is why I cannot allow you to go alone, but at the same time, I cannot allow Hannah and Richy to be in danger. They are both in the Ironsplinter Mine. I can almost pinpoint their exact location. I cannot say how long this will be the case." Jake's voice remained steady, his tone unemotional, though his words conveyed a sense of urgency and conviction.
"I didn't know you'd be this talkative personally," you chuckled. "But in all seriousness, I am glad to be doing this 'kamikaze' mission as Dan would like to say, with you."
"Indeed, we've come a long way, haven't we?"
"Yes, we have, Jake. Yes, we have."
The car ride continued in a comfortable silence. There was an understanding between you and Jake that didn't require many words. It felt weird but right in some way, like two puzzle pieces that somehow fit together despite being from entirely different sets.
Both of you are polar opposites. An investigator and a criminal. Who would have thought both would remain seated in a confined space and talk about the most random things.
If someone would tell you you'd be partnering up with a hacker and probably one of the most wanted criminals in this part of Europe, you'd probably give that person a glare of a lifetime, yet here you are with Jake.
Indeed, you'd come a long way.
****
"Y/n," Jake began after minutes of comfortable silence.
"Yeah?" You turn to look at him briefly, careful to not let your eyes stray for too long away from the road. You wouldn't want to have a repeat of Hannah and Amy's mistakes. The forest was dense, and the road was illuminated only sporadically by dim streetlights. With its numerous twists and turns, you couldn't afford any distractions.
"I wish to ask one last favor of you." He continued as he typed away on his laptop. The hum of the car's engine and the occasional tapping of his keyboard filled the space between his words.
"Sure, what do you want me to do?"
"I would like to ask you to tell Michael that you are on your way to the Grimrock." He looked up at you, his gaze steady and serious.
"Makes sense," you mused. Slowing down a touch, you pulled out your phone and started composing a message to Michael, ensuring to keep your driving steady at the same time.
Tumblr media
You grinned at your own antics. You showed your phone to Jake, knowing he shares the same humor as you.
"Seriously?" He lets out a soft laugh, the subtle crinkles around his eyes giving away his amusement. "This should not be a laughing matter, however, I find it really funny."
You snorted, unable to suppress your chuckle. "I just can't miss the opportunity."
****
"I don't get it, you know?" You mumbled aloud, the words escaping your thoughts unintentionally. It felt like you needed to voice your confusion, even if just to the air in the car.
"Hmm?" Jake turned to you with a quizzical look, his attention fully on you now.
"Thomas is right." You muttered after a beat or two, your gaze fixed on the road ahead as the car continued its journey. The cave on the outskirts of Moonvale was getting closer with each passing mile. "I am literally the highest-ranking criminal investigator in the region. I don't get why you're all so protective of me. I am fully capable of subduing someone like Michael. I've been trained for it for years." You voiced your thoughts with a hint of frustration in your tone. "I'm just not used to it," you exhaled sharply, your breath carrying a mixture of resignation and confusion.
"Jessica cares for you," Jake responded slowly, each word carrying weight as if he was carefully considering the impact. "You can be Superman, and be all invincible and she'll still be worrying about you. You cannot take that away from her. The same goes for everyone. They have grown to care for you."
"But what about Hannah and Richy?" you countered.
He didn't respond immediately, his fingers still dancing across the keyboard.
"Just because they don't want you to go doesn't mean they don't care about them. It just means they don't want you to go, however, it wasn't really their choice to make as the situation still demands you to go. It's not really a matter of choice of who is more important than who, and who is more capable than who." Jake's gaze met yours, his expression serious. "Remember your question back then, when Jessy was attacked and you were ready to fly here?"
"How far is too far when it comes to saving a life?"
"Precisely. Life is life, Y/n. No one will be greater than the other. We do not want you to put yourself in danger just because you have the capacity to do so."
"And you're allowed to do the same thing?" You scoffed. You know Jake's response was logical, but it didn't quite quell your frustration. "Why can't the same rules apply to both of us? I have seen that they are mostly relieved to be knowing it will be you who will go rather than me. And I saw their distress when I decided to come along, too, Jake."
You wanted to say it's unfair because it is.
"Y/n, you cannot blame them."
"I am not. It's just not fair." There you said it.
"You have formed a bond with them. A genuine one, it will only be natural for them to be more worried about you." He tried to explain. "I have threatened them and invaded their privacy on multiple occasions. That's why I do not expect them to warm up to me the way they have to you."
You wanted to laugh at the hypocrisy. If they have known you have access to their private data as well, would they have thought of you the same?
You don't even want to know.
You sighed. You're also being unfair to them, thinking about them like this. They have accepted you for who you are, and you having access to their private account seemed to be shallow compared to what you have done, and yet they turned a blind eye to them.
This is some fucked up shit, really.
"But what about me?" You spoke softly, almost to yourself. "You have formed a genuine bond with me. So, my opinion for you not to go doesn't matter?"
"It meant the world to me, Y/n. That you cared for me. But I have already made the decision to protect you at any cost." He said softly. "I have been on the run for four years. One event changed my whole life completely. I lost everything in a single night. My home, my identity. Every single person in my life, Y/n. There was nobody I could trust even though I did not want to."
"I am sorry to hear that." You let out a sigh. "I just didn't want you to think that no one cares about you."
"There is no need to be sorry," he replied, ruffling your hair, which earned a playful groan from you. "I knew what I was getting into. I made that decision."
"But that doesn't mean it's not hard."
"You do not have to sacrifice your life and career for me. I am already used to running away. I also knew you wanted a life here, with Jessica, and the others. I will not take that away from you."
You smiled sadly. Yes, you do want that.
But will the situation permit you? You're not entirely sure.
"Don't you ever have the desire to stay here with Lilly and Hannah?" You questioned back. "And live a normal life?"
"Of course, I do." He answered, eyes growing a bit distant. "However, I know it will be impossible."
"Can you maybe stop predicting things, Jake?"
"You and I both know how this will all end."
"Do we?" You challenged, a small smirk creeping into your features. "Maybe we should start trying for a few alternatives."
"What do you mean?"
****
"Well, here we are," you announced as you parked the car. The headlights illuminated the end of the road, revealing the entrance to the cave. It wasn't exactly a picturesque spot, with a glaring red "No Trespassing!" sign catching your attention. "Looks like it's pretty isolated."
Jake stepped out of the car, closing the door behind him, and took in the surroundings. The air was heavy with anticipation, and the looming darkness of the cave entrance only added to the eerie atmosphere. "Seems like no one's really allowed around here," he observed.
"Hmm, so I guess we don't have any choice. We're going to have to do this the old-fashioned way," you said, stretching your fingers and rolling your shoulders to relieve some of the tension from the long drive.
"By old-fashioned, you mean breaking and entering?" Jake quirked an eyebrow, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
"Yeah," you grinned. "Cleo would be so proud of us."
A soft chuckle escaped Jake. "She does have a reputation for breaking in."
"Shall we contact the others?"
"Yes, that would be ideal," Jake agreed, his expression serious as he retrieved his phone.
****
"Hello?" you greeted everyone, your voice carrying through the phone's speaker.
From the other end of the call, a collective sigh of relief seemed to escape.
"Oh my goodness, there you are!" Lilly exclaimed.
"You've been gone for ages," Jessy added, her voice tinged with concern.
"They were only gone for a little over an hour, Jessy," Dan interjected. "Hey there, Sherlock and Hackerman. How's it going?"
"Oh shush it, Dan. One hour is long enough." Jessy shot back with a playful roll of her eyes. "How are things going, you two?"
"We have reached the Ironsplinter mine," Jake told them.
"Yeah, see this big opening with these do not cross tapes all over it?" You explained, turning your phone's camera to capture the scene. The cave's opening was imposing, shrouded in darkness and warning signs. "That's the entrance. We're going to have to cut through the tapes and climb our way through to enter."
"Yeah," Cleo's voice came through the phone. "So, technically no one should be allowed inside?"
"Exactly," you replied, a playful grin in your voice. "I can now see why you like breaking in."
A burst of laughter echoed on the other end of the call, most notably from Dan. "Good one."
"Seriously, Y/n?" Cleo can only facepalm in exasperation. "I was afraid Dan has already corrupted you, and it was only a few hours since you arrived here."
"Hey! I'm not that bad."
"Anyway, there will be instances where we will be suddenly offline, but don't worry. The reception here is just really unreliable as you can imagine." You informed them.
"I thought as much," Thomas chimed in.
"Thanks for the heads up," Lilly added.
"We're lucky to even have any reception at all," Cleo remarked.
"Be careful, both of you," Jessy's voice held genuine concern.
"We'll keep you updated as soon as we can, okay?" You assured them before ending the call. Turning to Jake, you said, "Now, shall we head inside?"
****
In the dim light of your flashlights, you and Jake ventured into the cave's mouth. The air grew cold and heavy, laden with dampness that clung to their skin like a shroud. The walls seemed to close in, the jagged rock formations looming like the teeth of some ancient, evil creature.
"Comfy," you whistled as the interior of the cave unfolded before you. If the outside was already pitch black, then the inside is pretty much the epitome of darkness. Outside, at least there was the moonlight to help you make out your surroundings, but inside? If you hadn't brought flashlights, you'd likely be navigating blind. "Creepier than I imagined."
"Well, considering its history, it has all the right to be called creepy," Jake mentioned while examining his map. "During my research, I found out quite a bit about this mine."
"Sounds like you," you playfully nudged him.
"I wanted to be prepared, just like you," he scoffed. "I'll handle the tech stuff, while you do your agent thing."
"Jake, I'm everything but prepared." You sighed as you navigated the uneven terrain, moving with cautious grace. Your steps echoing softly. The cave's floor was uneven, a mosaic of rocks and pebbles. Occasionally, you would need to clamber over a protruding rock or duck beneath a low-hanging stalactite. "I just want to get them both back," You added after a while.
"Since when did Dolos come unprepared?" he remarked, his flashlight tracing patterns on the cave's wall.
"Guess there's a first time for everything," you conceded with a shrug. The cave's darkness seemed to breathe, and an unnerving ambiance hung in the air.
"Dolos... the spirit of trickery, a master at cunning deception, craftiness, and treachery," he mused. The glow of the flashlights danced along the tunnel's walls as you both continued deeper into the cave. "I can see why you chose that alias. It has quite fit you apparently."
"I'm not sure if I'll take that as a compliment." You raised an eyebrow. Did he just call you a liar? Just in a metaphoric way?
"It is a compliment," he affirmed as he led you to a tunnel on the right. The narrow passage led you deeper into the heart of the cave, each step echoing softly against the rocky walls. "I was fascinated by you from the start. It's no secret that I have access to all private and public information of this group. But I do not have access to yours." He paused, his tone contemplative. "And I know you only let me access your phone because it's a dummy phone that only has your private messages with them, nothing else." He continued, his footsteps echoing faintly. "You know the basic tricks in hacking, and there are also instances where you've demonstrated advanced techniques. Things that a normal citizen wouldn't have knowledge of."
"I am a covert agent for a reason," you replied, your voice steady in the echoing tunnel. "As a master in psychology, it is easy for me to deceive my targets, which is a vital tool in becoming an undercover agent."
"What I am saying, Y/n is that you're the only one capable to subdue Michael." He paused for emphasis before continuing. "Play with his brain the way Dolos would."
"Roger that." You smirked. "Though it surprises me you'd known about Dolos a lot already."
"Maybe Dan is not the only biggest fan of yours."
****
"I must say, it's quite smart of him to use this mine to hide Hannah and Richy," Jake commented as you both treaded cautiously through the depths of the cave.
"Because it's so extensive," you nodded, the beam of your flashlight cutting through the darkness.
"Correct," Jake affirmed. "The Ironsplinter Mine has a total length of more than 60 miles. The main entrance in Terrendale has turned into a museum, with a part of the tunnels accessible to visitors." He gestured at different parts of the map. "However, most of the tunnels beyond that point are blocked off and in danger of collapsing. I'd estimate that Michael has about 30 miles of tunnels at his disposal."
"A perfect place to hide," you agreed, a thoughtful expression on your face. Then, a realization struck you. "Jake, what if he's been hiding here from the beginning?"
"Then we must assume that he knows his way around quite well," Jake said through gritted teeth. The tension in the air grew as you both continued your journey, maintaining a brisk pace while staying alert.
Your eyes scanned the surroundings, your hand never straying far from your weapon. Being ambushed by Michael Hanson was not a situation you wanted to find yourself in.
Suddenly, Jake came to a halt, his flashlight revealing a hole in the ground with a ladder leading down. "Looks like a shaft," you commented.
"Indeed," Jake replied.
"Let me just update the group."

With your phone safely secured in your pocket, you turned your full attention to Jake. "Anything else I should know before we head down? It felt like you deliberately left something out when talking to the others."
"It's kind of unsettling how you can pick up on that," Jake sighed. "According to my research, the ladders in this shaft go down for about 200 feet. In case any of the ladders are damaged or missing—"
"Hmm we're fucked, right?"
"I was going to say our plan will fail but I guess it's the same thing."

Upon midway in descending the ladder, your phone began to vibrate incessantly in your back pocket. The unexpected vibration caused you to falter for a moment, your grip on the ladder tightening instinctively to prevent any accidents.
Once your feet were firmly on the ground, you retrieved your phone and checked the screen. It was flooded with notifications, indicating that you and Jake had been exploring the mine for a longer period than you had realized.

"We have to be thankful that the ladder was relatively stable," Jake mentioned, his gaze fixed on the map in his hands once again. "However, they have been exposed to constant moisture for years and are quite rusty."
"I think we should seriously reconsider using them on the way back," you remarked, a shiver running down your spine at the thought of relying on rusty ladders above a 200-foot drop. "The last thing I want is plummeting straight into the abyss."
"Right, especially if there are four of us."
"Is there any other way out?" you inquired, your eyes scanning the intricate network of tunnels that surrounded you. Without a map on hand, getting lost in these winding passages seemed like a very real possibility.
"Yes, there is. However, they come with some extensive detours."
You sighed, a sense of fatigue settling in. "Oh, boy... this is going to be one hell of a night."

A/N: Hello! First of all, I want to apologize for making this fanfiction under WIP for months. I have read your comments and everything and I want to thank you for spurring the author in me once again. School has been a pain in my ass and it has been a hassle juggling life and boosting my GPA along with some personal issues. To make it short, it had emotionally and mentally burned me out to the point I can't even write anything. Not to mention I was bombarded with paper works so I really have to force myself to vomit words just to survive the semester so yeah, I think that sums it up. My apologies again because I have to cut this part out upon reaching 4.5k because I feel like the whole part will be far too long and I wouldn't be able to put a breather between scenes. The next part will be uploaded soon after this, don't worry.
Question tho: what are your thoughts on my writing style? Because I feel like I'm stretching out the storyline more than it probably needs, adding details that might not be entirely essential. I want to hear what's on your mind.

Note
i would love to see Richy during the ending maybe him staring at the lighter in his hand or him sitting down as the fire all around surrounds him
