Will we ever get anything quite like Code Geass again?
I don't think it's possible.
Code Geass is Japanese nationalist propaganda disguised as a global political drama, disguised as a military mecha show, disguised as yaoibait, disguised as a teen melodrama, disguised as a high school romcom, disguised as a Pizza Hut commercial...
...except those layers aren't layers at all, but are instead comingled in a giant snake ball of insanity.
The lead writer, Ichirō Ōkouchi, only ever worked as an episode writer for other shows prior to Code Geass, and never took the helm of an anime series ever again. And it shows. [EDIT: Several people have pointed out his other lead writing credits to me. So I misread Wikipedia—sue me. I maintain that this guy is a better episode writer than he is a lead writer.]
The minute-to-minute pacing is impeccable from a mechanical standpoint, with tension and stakes rising to ever-higher peaks, balanced out by the slow simmers of the b-plot and c-plot. It keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat at all times. Meanwhile, the large-scale plot is the most off-the-wall middle school nonsense I've ever seen, continually surprising the viewer by pulling twists too dumb to have ever have been on their radar—and therefore more effective in terms of raw shock value.
"Greenlight it!" was the mantra of this anime's production. It must have been. It has, in no particular order, all of the following:
Character designs from CLAMP, the foremost yaoi/BL group in Japan at the time—for characters who are only queer insofar as they can bait the audience, and only straight insofar as they can be more misogynist to the female cast.
Speaking of the female cast, hoo boy the fanservice. We've all seen anime girls breast boobily, with many cases more egregious than Code Geass, but there's something special about it happening immediately after—or sometimes in the middle of!—scenes of military conflict and ethnic cleansing.
Pizza Hut product placement everywhere, in every conceivable situation. High-speed chases, light slice-of-life scenes, intimate character moments, all of it. Gotta have Pizza Hut.
The anime-only Pizza Hut mascot, Cheese-kun. He wears a fedora.
The most hilarious approximations of European names—which I would love to see more often, frankly. Names like, I dunno, "Count Schnitzelgrübe zi Blanquezzio."
A depiction of China that is wholly removed from any modern reality, with red-and-gold pagodas, ornamental robes, scheming eunuchs, and a brainwashed child empress. There's a character named General Tsao, like the chicken.
Inappropriate free-form jazz in the soundtrack, intruding at the most unexpected times.
A secret cabal not unlike the Illuminati, run by an immortal shota with magic powers, holding influence all across the world, at the highest levels of government. They matter for approximately three episodes.
An unexpected insert scene of a schoolgirl using the corner of a table to masturbate. She's doing it to thoughts of her crush, the princess Euphemia—because she believes Euphemia to be as racist as she herself is, and that gets her off. This interrupts an unrelated scene of our protagonist faction planning their next move, which then resumes as if uninterrupted.
Said schoolgirl, in a fit of hysteria, threatens to detonate a worse-than-nuclear bomb in the middle of her school. She then goes on to develop an even more destructive version of that bomb, and become a war criminal, in a chain of cause-and-effect stemming from the moment she finds out that Euphemia wasn't actually that racist.
A character called "the Earl of Pudding."
A premise that asks us to believe that the name Lelouch is normal enough that he didn't need to change it when he went into hiding as an ordinary civilian. "No, that's not Prince Strimbleford von Vanquish! That's our classmate, Strimbleford Smith."
The collective unconscious, a la Carl Jung, within which the protagonist fights his villainous father for control over the fate of humankind. After this is over, the anime just keeps going for about ten more episodes.
An episode in which a mech tosses a giant pizza.
A gay yandere sleeper agent who can manipulate the perception of time.
Chess being played very badly, even to the untrained eye. Lelouch frequently checkmates his opponent by moving his king. This goes hand-in-hand with the anime's crock of bad chess symbolism.
A fictional drug that can most succinctly be described as "nostalgia heroin."
Roller-skating mecha in knightly armor, and some of the most sickass mecha fight choreography that I've seen.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. This anime is what the average Westerner in 2006 thought anime was, and it was made in a confluence of factors that cannot be replicated. I've never had so much fun watching something that I found so... insulting. Repugnant. Ridiculous. Baffling. I love it sincerely.
Catch me cosplaying Lloyd Asplund at a con sometime, or maybe even the big gay loser himself, Lelouch vi Britannia.

Have you ever considered one (probably Marco lol) or multiple of the animorphs post war on some kind of celebrity tv show (ie game shows for charity or something like dancing with the stars)?
Oh man, if you throw Marco's win-at-all-costs attitude in with his natural trollishness, and then you take into account the media landscape of the naughts... Hoo boy.
Survivor: In a rare unanimous outcome, Marco is voted off by complete consensus after the third incident where he gets his team disqualified from a challenge by turning into a chimpanzee to complete an obstacle course.
The Dating Game: Marco is supposed to be the third contestant to introduce himself to the bachelorette. Instead, he comes out of his booth directly after the second contestant is done speaking, declares "Well, that's me persuaded!" pulls out his bouquet, and presents it to the man next to him: "Wanna go on a date, handsome?" The second contestant, blushing but looking flattered, takes Marco's hand in his; they walk off the set together.
Crossfire: After public statements about "not too sure on this climate change," Marco is invited to oppose an ecologist as they debate the reality of global warming. During the episode Marco remains silent as the scientist presents her arguments, even when the host prompts him repeatedly to argue. The host starts arguing with the scientist, only to have Marco shush him and go "I'm trying to listen!" After filming 3 hours' footage, during which the climate scientist spoke for 2 hours 50 minutes, Marco goes "Gotta bounce — have fun editing that!" and disappears into an air vent.
The Apprentice: Honestly, we're not sure what happened here? The host, like, disappeared, directly after the end of the season Marco appeared in. He's not dead, we don't think — I guess he moved to Uzbekistan? But no one's heard from him since he donated all his real estate holdings to the American Cancer Society and fled the country. Go figure.

how do you draw so.. raggedy ann..
aargh such high praise!! this ones especially for you!
Tumblr media
for real thank you so much :D a few people have said this, esp since i've drawn ragatha. and to be honest i am pleased as punch. i've been watching that 1977 movie on repeat it's so beautiful.
if you wanted an actual answer, i don't know if i'm bright enough to be able to explain it, but i think its mainly a mix of medium and the way i draw fabric!
the raggedy ann & andy movie is traditional hand-drawn animation, ann herself being primarily animated by the one and only Tissa David. most of my character art is scanned in from pencil on paper and edited for higher contrast. this might be why, since that gives it a slightly sketchier finish, which raggedy ann definitely has (in comparison to like, recent ghibli movies).
as for fabric, i really like drawing fabric. it's so fun to make ragatha as soft and stitched and pillowy-looking as possible, especially compared to a kind of rubbery, stretchy-toy pomni. in my head, ragatha hugs pretty much replicate the feeling of being cosed up in bed.
earlier today me and a friend were at college on a bear-hunt online for this spread, which he found, and which is so fun and informative:
Tumblr media
note the unironed dress, baggy shoulders, and hands like mittens a size too big! literally adorable.
i want to get my hands on the book that this came from because hoo boy there are some beautiful drawings from it i've seen dotted around niche animation blogs and forums.
anyway thank u so so much and if you were looking for an attempt at answering your question then i hope u have it ^_^ if not then anyone can feel free to ask/recommend/show me stuff about illustration & animation bc it is my study and i love to talk about it! if anyone wants the few other development pages of the raggedy ann & andy movie that i've managed to scoop together then do ask!! (& if anyone has links to more then u know what to do o_<)

fuck it i'm making this c!awesamdreamity sitcom AU (dr3 edition) a real thing for the funnies alone. why the hell not
premise: they get thrown into a sitcom. that's it. they're in a sitcom world that plays by sitcom rules, which means that everything that occurs Has to conceivably work within the genre. that means no throwing dream in a cell underground and treating him as a prisoner, sam, that's not funny enough. they can't leave or escape, and if they try to do something that Doesn't work within the genre they'll either just be completely unable to do it or they'll be foiled in some genre-specific way (ex: sam tries to build a cell on the property anyway and ends up in a three-episode arc about his fight with HOA)
the main point of this set up is that anything is technically possible as long as it works within the bit. also, yes, there's a laugh track, and whether or not the characters can hear it has everything to do with what's the funniest option (c!sam fucking hates the thing, for the record.)
highlights of this include:
the sitcom Demands A Relationship. because neither c!quackity nor c!sam is willing to do the whole married couple spiel with c!dream, that means that c!awesamq are the ones that are officially "together." this goes so fucking badly and is like, the primary reason why i'm making this a thing in the first place
c!dream isn't Allowed to be a prisoner, but he does have to stay within the house. between the genre and c!awesamq's opinions, he's not really going to end up as just "the roommate" or family or you know, an official third part of the throuple, so the maid it is
a level of violence is allowed but like, the actual pain/consequences has everything to do with whether it works For The Bit or For The Drama. like, c!q might hit c!dream with the car and nothing will happen bc it'll be played off as a punchline, for example, but also a dramatically timed fall might lead to someone walking around with a broken arm for an 'episode' or two. there's no magical accelerated healing here, just the Power Of The Bit
similarly, a lot will be allowed to slide as long as you're genre savvy about it. c!quackity won't be able to get away with outright torturing c!dream for hours, of course, but pushing him around is fine as long as it's funny enough. especially if it comes with a side of romantic drama
speaking of the romantic drama, hoo boy are c!awesamq a fucking TRAIN WRECK. like my god are they so toxic. c!sam is literally the quintessential asshole condescending boyfriend on that server and c!q has a quick fuse, a hell of a temper, and generally reacts to being talked down to with several knives and cursing. they take to a domestic romantic relationship as a fish does to . uh. lava maybe. like it's BAD
think screaming slammed doors things being thrown there's a glass sailing towards c!sam's head screaming over the banisters holes in the drywall fine! FINE! [laugh track] bad. it'd be gloriously, ridiculously toxic. the crowd goes wild
c!quackity has to contend with the fact that his husband is absolutely down horrendous FOR THEIR STUPID GODDAMN MAID .
the maid also wants his husband more than quackity :/ sidelined in his own relationship once again (i wonder why, Q)
how well they adjust has everything to do with how well they acclimate to the genre. c!quackity does the best job--he knows how to play a crowd and do so well. c!sam by FAR acclimates the worst. he's inherently completely offended by the idea of everything about his job and the prison being turned into Entertainment, into something Funny, into A Show To Consume and basically reacts to the sitcom thing by trying to ignore it. this, of course, means that he ends up generally being the butt of the joke
c!dream is. well. at least he's got less stress about dying i guess. and is generally a lot less injured bc starvation and torture lead to lower comedy ratings smh. is still kinda in hell but you know yesterday he got to watch c!quackity hit c!sam over the head with a frying pan and literal cartoon birds appeared so
honestly he's kinda quietly having an existential crisis and lowkey earning sympathy points from the proverbial audience by being the one that comes off the least as Just The Complete And Utter Worst
(meanwhile: c!sam is yelling at c!quackity for how he's apparently cut up all of his dress shirts while c!quackity screams back about something something and he can stick the scissors up his ass)
[laugh track]

Okay, I make a lot of jokes about Jason drinking poison just because Nico asked him to and drinking poison because someone said "If we're friends drink this poison" is a wild thing to do. But it's also like... this is kind of Nico's answer to Jason telling him to take a risk and trust that Jason really is his friend and really does want to help him? Jason says "If you want to belong anywhere you're going to have to take some risks and trust that people want to be your friends", Nico is now turning around and saying "If you really want to be my friend, prove that you trust me instead of just asking me to trust you". Nico's been burned before by trusting other people blindly! Basically everyone he's ever cared about has let him down in a really big way! But he tells Jason to trust him and Jason does without a moment's hesitation. And it's like... people usually don't trust Nico, the Seven in particular (Hazel aside) have been looking at Nico with nothing but distrust since he got out of Tartarus. And here's golden boy Jason taking this poison without hesitation because Nico told him to and in doing so saying "Yes, I trust you with my life, I have faith that you really do intend to help". That would mean a lot! Jason is willing to literally put his life on the line based solely on Nico's word that it's necessary! That's a level of faith that basically no one else shows in Nico, especially in this series! Even when characters do trust Nico, it's usually because there's no one else who can do what he's doing (no one else can lead the Seven to the Doors, no one else can shadow travel the Athena Parthenos, and honestly given he's not actually one of the Seven he's... kind of expendable as far as the quest goes). But Jason just... trusts him, without hesitation or reservation.
Just adkajf;lsdkjfl;daskfjdslkfj it's so much????? Jason and Nico's relationship is so sosososososo good whether you read it as romantic or platonic! It's honestly wild to me that Rick managed to make these two's very close relationship work and feel incredibly real with such a rapid development, because... yeah, there isn't actually a lot of time between Split and Nico leaving with the Athena Parthenos, but the clear affection and concern between them and how they worry about each other while they're separated and how delighted Jason is to see Nico again (and presumably vice versa but we're in Jason's head at the time) at the final battle and Nico actually letting Jason hug him still all makes sense. This is a friendship that is still in its early stages but clearly already means a lot to both of them just because of the circumstances they established it in and the way they mesh as people (and probably because neither of them have a lot of friends as it is, Jason is popular but I don't get the sense he has a lot of friends and Nico is Nico, but that's sad so let's not dwell on it), it's fantastic! I'm really disappointed that we don't get to see them interact in ToA and I really hope there are flashbacks to them interacting in TSatS (and/or Jason's ghost shows up) because I would love to see what their friendship is like after they've had a chance to settle into it in a non-apocalyptic situation. Clearly they stay very close post-HoO given how broken up Nico is after Jason's death and him missing Jason to an incredibly tragic degree in TSatS (assuming that doesn't get changed in editing), but I want to see them! Let me see them being friends, Rick!

HOO BOY I am capital F Fucking Mad about the ""twist"" near the end of Near Light. What the actual shit were the writers thinking? This reads like some soap opera shit where they need to find a narrative twist to propel another season. Nearl is infected and I categorically refuse to engage with the boneheaded as fuck decision to suddenly make it canon that Margaret lied to everyone close to her and just pretended to have the struggle of everyone else around her. It turns her fight with the Blood Knight from an amazing battle of ideals where neither side is wrong and both are necessary for the future to improve into Margaret stolen-valoring her way back into her privilege while inspiring exactly 0 infected because they all should be rightfully mad at her for doing that shit.
I refuse to let such a compelling genuinely Lawful Good positive character, whose spice comes from the contrast she makes against a wide world of greys and necessary evils that make up living on Terra, become just another fucking Neolib who "really understands the struggle she swears". Anything I write in this setting, including my planned fic with her as a main character, will have her Infected as a plot point just like most of the Rhodes cast, and I absolutely refuse to acknowledge otherwise.
EDIT:
adding this thought I had so my thought is not lost along the reblog chain:
To make a further point here, I think it literally makes an unrecoverably-large plot hole if Nearl is not infected.
This means she knew the Blood Knight would eventually gas out due to his Oripathy and let it happen without saying a word.
This means every time another operator confided in her after a hard day, she was lying to them if she said a single word in shared understanding.
This means that the character who is said by everyone to be stubborn as a mule and straightforward has actually been perpetuating a conspiracy for several years on end.
I don't know about y'all, but that literally does not sound like Margaret Nearl. I think that ruins her to the point that all positive impact of hers is offset across the entire narrative. That all previous characterization of her was a front, a show to make sure that no one found a reason to question her. And I respect her way too fucking much for that to be how she goes out. So Margaret Nearl is infected, and the writer of Near Light made a mistake.

The Pros and Cons of Silent Hill: Ascension
Hey there! Are you planning on sitting through Silent Hill Ascension, either because you're excited, want to build up hype/support for further Silent Hill projects, or maybe you're curious about what new shit show Konami's cooked up? Well, I've sat through the first two days, and let this post be a quick run-through on the good, the bad, and the very, very ugly about Silent Hill: Ascension!
Pros:
There's honestly very little, but I'll run through them nonetheless.
Voice Acting is, right now, okay. Some actors are clearly better than others. I have to give special shout-outs to Rachel Hernandez and Xavier Candless. They're both doing really well with their characters so far and I'm excited to hear how they'll act in more emotive scenes. Of course, we're only two days in so we'll see how that changes.
Silent Hill Ascension features minigames which average around "okay." I'll talk about it more in the 'Bad' section, but the good ones are fun little brain teasers that I find satisfying enough to solve. This is not across the board, but it's enough of a positive that I felt it okay to list.
The site is functional enough that the catch-up videos seemed to work without any hiccups (edit: so long as there isn't a livestream occurring at the same time. If you want to play catch-up 30 minutes before the new stuff is released, odds are the livestream will cut in and mess up your video). Plus, the grace period for decision making is very generous so far, ranging from a full 24 hours to multiple days, so they do give you enough time if you can't watch live.
Credit where credit is due: the monster/creature designs are genuinely well-made. You can clearly see where the budget went, and it was towards making these things look cool and be animated well enough to translate that creepy factor. While nothing is abundantly original right now (we've yet to see the flaming box head guy) I won't short-change the monster designers and animators here, they put effort into this.
There was a bit of misinformation spread around that you'd have to pay to participate. Thankfully, that's not true, you can "play" Ascension without paying a cent and I, personally, wouldn't call this a "pay-to-win" type of game with its set-up. In other words: DO NOT PAY, it's absolutely not worth it here.
Bad:
Animation quality shifts from middling to horrible. The main criticism I have for this "experimental idea" is that everything Ascension tries, the 2000s nailed long before. If you've ever seen one of those 3D straight-to-TV movies that airs on cartoon networks during the holidays, congrats, their animation is likely better and has more charm than Ascension. Characters in Ascension move stiffly, either emote too much or not enough, and lip syncing seems off no matter which language you pick. Animation in SH1 is easily better than this, so don't expect a visual spectacle.
As an addendum to this: Ascension is dark--no, not the content, it is literally hard to see. Going into a Silent Hill-adjacent media, you expect visibility to be impacted by fog. Ascension, on the other hand, skips the fog entirely and just makes everything dark. It is incredibly difficult to see anything that's happening (this includes QTEs which, hoo boy! look at the next segment for that). I don't want to be cynical, but I truly do believe that part of the reason why is to cover up the stiff animation. Until Dawn and other Dark Anthology games had some moments of animation weirdness, but Silent Hill Ascension is easily worse than that on a pure technical level.
App and website responsivity is baaad. Minigames are designed for both platforms with zero differences, but this means some minigames are better on desktop than on mobile and vice versa. Two minigames stand out as particularly mixed/bad: a find-the-object game and a guitar minigame. The find-the-object game was better on desktop because your hovering cursor could find clickable areas more easily than on mobile. The guitar minigame was just bad--it wasn't a rhythm game, it was a game where you had to click finger positions for chords on the guitar strings and, my god, it played horribly no matter which platform I picked (though mobile was noticeably worse) and actually hurt my ears.
As an addendum to that, the live QTE events (yes that's a thing) ALSO suffer from this lack of responsivity, with more destructive results. Live participants were abruptly thrust into QTEs with no warning, no tutorials, and no preparation. There were 4 types of QTEs: a quick button press, a hold-release button, a rapid-tap, and a quick swipe. Of these, only the hold-release and rapid-tap worked regularly. The quick press barely responded, and the swipe indicator is practically hidden due to it being borderline invisible.* While you can try the minigames over and over as much as you want, the QTEs are limited to the live showings and cannot be "replayed." In addition, they have been heavily implied to be a major determining factor as to whether or not characters survive, so if every character's fate is based on successful QTEs, every character is going to die in this show, no matter what you do. This is why I said it's not pay-to-win, you can't pay your way through live QTEs, and this set-up feeds into the unsatisfactory system the entire "game" perpetuates. Even if YOU do well, decisions are based on the community, so if they fail, tough nugs.
The story isn't shaping up to be anything remarkable. There's no major hook in the opening scene and even less of a hook for the three scenes that followed. I'm not intrigued by the "horror" being shown, the way this is being shot and told is more confusing than anything else and, while there are some 'good' actors in this, a majority of them are bad and lack any hutzpah to sell the continued experience. I'm going to hold out for the end of the week, when the first "episode" is done airing, but if nothing hooks me I'm not going to continue.
Ugly:
The "Battlepass." Oh dear god the Battlepass. By paying $20, you can get more "influence points," which you can use to determine actions in this game. You also get exclusive little emote stickers for the live chat (oof) that are, at best, a cringey nightmare and, at worst, absolutely stupid and useless. You also get accessories for your avatar (did I mention there's an avatar? it's so pointless I don't even know WHERE to put that tidbit). Why is this even here? You already have freemium options where you can buy influence points, what does a battlepass add?
The "live chat" just shouldn't be there. I'm sorry, it shouldn't. You can already see the community casting votes and helping with QTEs, having a live chat that is barely moderated with hundreds of thousands of people signing on at 9 to watch the stupidity unfold is a bad idea. It also contributes to the stupidity of the Battlepass system--I don't want emotes, I don't want a 3D avatar that can appear in the show if I give enough points--so nix the whole thing. EDIT 11/1/2023: I kinda got my wish! After the amazing lack of moderation on launch, they've either temporarily OR permanently disabled the live chat! Unfortunately, the video's dimensions to compensate FOR live chat have not been altered, so there's a big gap of black negative space where it should be. People can only reply with the dumb stickers the devs have shoved into this, BUT if you have the battlepass, you can apparently type messages! Ironically, this retroactively gives the battle pass an actual fucking purpose since it gives you a privilege, and the stickers serve a purpose since they're the only way for non-battlepassers to communicate in live chat. Fucking brilliant, they've stumbled backwards into an unintentional solution. EDIT 11/4/2023: Genvid's CEO, Jacob Navok, has made various claims on twitter that of course they tested they tested their AI moderation for basic slurs, it's just that the system got overwhelmed by day 1 traffic. Well, I absolutely DON'T believe that (the testing, not the overwhelmed thing, connection and stability were terrible day 1) seeing as people are getting around not being able to TYPE swearing and horrific racial slurs into chat by simply making their usernames swears and slurs without any letter substitution (a la leetspeak). Here is a link to a video of someone who was streaming Ascension and had the chat open, only to see have someone with the user name "Fuck_[n-word]s" in chat (I'm not typing the actual slur fuck that). When he goes to try and flag the user, he is given no ability to report the username. So, yeah, even if you see some incredibly racist/bigoted shit, you can't flag the user and report them to, y'know, assist with the absolutely real robot-powered moderation that totally exists! If there was the most BASIC moderation in the world to catch english swears and slurs, that username would not have been permitted under any circumstances, so I fully do not believe this fucker.
The decisions themselves shouldn't have labels. What I mean by that is that, so far, every option has three possible options. These options are labelled under three categories: redemption, suffering, and damnation. In other words, the watcher can literally see the paths leading towards the "good, neutral, and bad" endings for Ascension. This shouldn't be a thing, period, because it immediately introduces biases into your choices. Every option so far has been massively skewed towards the "redemption" path because people aren't blind, they can see the "good" ending on the horizon, and they want to go for it. The worst part is, the options on their on aren't explicitly good or bad, so if they got rid of that labeling it'd still work. idk, it just feels stupid. (NOTE: day 2 introduced ONE choice that doesn't have this same labeling system. No clue if that's a bug or if there are going to be decisions that don't have a label. Even then, it seems like a small decision in the overall scheme of things, so...)
Yes, the decisions are permanent, thus denying you the ability to see 2/3s of whatever Genvids has worked on. I just think that's dumb and, though many in the community have criticized this already, it feels even dumber when watching the show play out live. There's no way that the money Ascension could possibly make would subsidize the effort put into this if you're effectively nixing 2/3s of anything you can see (and it does seem like major alterations to the characters and their routes so far, nothing minor, so... yeah, you're missing out on a LOT). This also means that because of the audience effectively being enticed to pick the clearly labelled "good path," if you put any effort into a different choice, odds are you wasted your time with minigames for the day. This means Ascension is set up to be as unsatisfying as possible for individuals, and only satiates half of the community engaging with it. There is no way this is going to last the entire scheduled 6 months this is intended to run for if this is the system they're operating under.
In conclusion: give this one a pass. If you're really curious, you can watch now and get a good idea of its future quality. This isn't remarkable at all and looks more like a time sink than anything "fun."
I still don't understand why this isn't a video game, other than Konami hoping some suckers will pay for the influence packs and get them more money than a $60 one-time-purchase. Quantic Dreams and Supermassive "Dark Anthology" games are really fun and well-liked because of the CYA angle they take. This could've made a decent amount of money if it were just, y'know, a normal game.
*MINOR EDIT: tested the QTEs on desktop instead of mobile and they were better overall: prompts respond easily to mouse clicks and aren't nearly as invisible on my phone screen compared to my desktop. If you are REALLY interested in trying it live and getting a feel of the "authentic, live experience", I'd recommend accessing the site on desktop over downloading a mobile app.
EDIT 11/2/2023
Yeah I know I keep editing this honestly BUT I do have a big-ass critique I just noticed relating, again, to the minigames.
Here is a screenshot of the rewards you can receive for your performance with the minigames. You are rated on a scale of 1-3 stars, with a failure being 0 stars. In return for your performance, you gain "Interactive Points" and EXP. Tell me, after looking at this screenshot, what the problem with these rewards might be:
Tumblr media
Do you see it? Well, if you don't, let me point it out to you.
THE AMOUNT OF INTERACTIVE POINTS YOU RECEIVE, THE CURRENCY YOU USE TO ACTUALLY MAKE DECISIONS AND PROPERLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE STORY, GOES DOWN IF YOU DO WELL AT THE MINIGAMES. THE GAME ACTIVELY PUNISHES YOU FOR PLAYING WELL.***
100 interactive points, by the way, is not enough to vote on a decision! You need 200 minimum. You also cannot repeatedly play the minigames to farm IP or EXP so, once you get two stars, you can't get the rewards for three or vice versa. And remember, if you're not a battlepasser, you only get two of these minigames per day.
Why on earth is it scaled this way? The difference between two stars and three stars is the exact same, why does it not increase when you do the minigames well? 100 for one star, 200 for two, 300 for three, it's so god damn easy AND you can still keep the scummy interactive point packages they sell!
But, I here you asking, what does the EXP do? Well, ignoring that a 10 EXP difference is exceeding minimal, EXP gives you... nothing!
Yeah, not even kidding with this one. There does seem to be a leveling system attached to your profile, but I cannot see a single thing connecting it to rewards (which are across the board useless), giving you a power boost with your voting, or just giving you perks. As far as I'm aware, EXP doesn't grant you a god damn thing, and that's the only increased reward from doing well.
***CORRECTION (because nothing in my life can ever be simple): the minigames DO reward you better than the screenshot above. Just did today's minigames and I got 330 IP from a 2 star ranking. However, if that's the case, I GENUINELY do not understand why this is labelled incorrectly? This doesn't even add up correctly (the 1 star + 2 star ranking should equal 300, NOT 330).
So, at best, the site is poor at labelling things (which wouldn't surprise me, the UI is a mess most days on this) OR my view of the site/rewards are bugged! Who fuckin' knows at this point. Sorry for the long rant y'all but honestly? Considering I only noticed the labelling earlier today and couldn't test this until the reset happened, I could only go off the labelled point system above.
I WILL say that tonight was the first night the community succeeded at the endurance scenes! I'd be happier about that if the game itself gave a shit, because apparently, what we do does not matter (as this game seems rapt with telling us)
Tumblr media
Yes folks, despite the community succeeding two (2!) of these long ass, repetitive QTE events, for some fucking reason, Karl's hope went down further! This is, again, despite the fact that the community AT LARGE succeeded for the first time since the premiere date, but we still lost! Fucking how.

If Kate wants to recover in privacy it is her right, but hoo boy is Team Wales once again giving a masterclass in how not to handle something.  I truly think they don’t understand how much press and PR have changed in the last 10 years and did not expect people to have this reaction.  Hopefully this is just a poorly handled press campaign and not an indication of something more serious.
Tumblr media
This. ^^ I've spent many years in communications leadership roles, and transparency is key, 100% of the time. And it's easy to achieve.
The way William and Catherine's camp has handled things is just so crazy. What did they think would happen? Yes, she's entitled to her privacy — but what are the parameters? Why tell the public enough to make them curious, then shut everything down?
An example of the way this could have been communicated:
"Catherine, Princess of Wales, will undergo surgery this week for a benign digestive issue. Her prognosis is excellent. On the advice of her physicians, she will be resting and working on her recovery at home for the next several weeks, and regular updates will not be forthcoming. The Princess is expected to resume working in April."
Easy-peasy, direct, and non-invasive.
Another example: "William, Prince of Wales, is saddened that he will not be able to represent his father, the King, at funeral services for King Constantine II of Greece. The Prince has been diagnosed with a mild case of influenza A and does not wish to expose others to his illness. He is expected to recover fully within days, and he has reached out to the family to express his regret."
There is nothing difficult about this. The King's PR folks seem to be a little better at at it, but it would have made sense, IMO, to be more forthcoming about type and treatment. Perhaps they still will.
(Edited to add: No, we don't NEED to know this. And I wish the whole family the best. But if the goal is to stop speculation and chatter and to control the narrative, the more transparency, the better.)
Tumblr media
You have to divide what is owed versus what is sensible.
She doesn't owe anyone her medical history. If she chooses not to disclose it, that's her right.
If she chooses not to disclose it, people are going to speculate and that is entirely out of her control.
If people are speculating and then her husband has a series of embarrassing gaffes while she is recovering, that is going to amplify speculation.
If all of that happens, and the royal rota has no stories to publish, and the Monarch is sick, and the heir looks incapable of doing the Monarchs job, and there are no other young interesting royals to take up space in the media, and you have no strategy for dealing with the reality of public relations in 2024, then you have...
This.
On the whole, I think it would have been better to just clarify what it was, without excruciating detail. But she absolutely is not required to do so. It's just her choice - mixed with other circumstances- has led to a shit show for the BRF.
Tumblr media
Yes! So well-said. If you don’t control the message, someone else will try to control it for you. IMO, it speaks to a lack of experience on their team. Someone should have advised them differently.
William has always hated the press so much that he won't hire real PR and media teams. He's stubborn. He hires people he decides he likes and trusts, even if they aren't fit for the job. It's understandable, but it's also a complete disaster.
Tumblr media
She owes no one anything, but if they want the chatter to stop, her handlers can offer more information. If the noise doesn't bother them, they can keep doing what they're doing. As the saying goes, nature abhors a vacuum; if you leave an open space, someone will come in and fill it (in this case, with their own information).
Tumblr media
The RF has a right to privacy. That said, they can’t cry foul about speculation if they choose not to divulge what’s happening.
Exhibit A: Charles. Even though we don’t know what kind of cancer he’s been diagnosed with or the kind of treatment he’s receiving, he’s been transparent from the get-go about his surgery and his subsequent illness. I get that we’re working with a different situation here because he’s the monarch, but we’re seeing him out and about. He’s working a bit. He said people’s cards and well-wishes are making him cry. He’s barely put a foot wrong with this whole thing. Kudos to whoever is spearheading his PR.
Exhibit B: Catherine and William. “Abdominal surgery” announcement is made. William takes some time off to help. All good. But then, Catherine – one of the world’s biggest draws from a PR perspective – seems to have disappeared. The same woman who was on the hospital steps with a blowout hours after having a baby is just ... gone, and William mysteriously pulls out of King Constantine’s funeral, and people speculate, and their reps put out a pissy response. (And no, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. It's pretty clear she's home and recovering, and all will likely be well.)
Yes, yes. I know the initial announcement said she’d be gone until after Easter. But if William and Catherine are bothered by the speculation, they would do well to issue a genuine statement, not a crabby one from a comms team that can’t do its job.
Like it or not, the RF is more reliant than most celebrities on public approval. William and Catherine are doing themselves no favors. If they don't care about the chatter, though, they're obviously free to carry on.
Tumblr media
100% agree with you. Even though, initially I had no problem with their vagueness as it seemed they were following the late Queen playbook. But, she had her children working and representing her and quashing any death rumors to journalists in public appearances. If William isn't going to work might as well tell everyone what she has and say she will be on leave for the rest of the year as it seems to me something serious.
Yes! I mean, I have no skin in the game here. I’m American. But I think there needs to be some accountability on William’s part. If he’s not going to work because he’s helping out at home, great — all the more power to him. But it’s not a good look for the future king to essentially say, “I’m on what amounts to an extended leave of absence, but I owe you nothing in the way of explanation, so piss off.”

Twisted Wonderland Daemon AU (but my brain is not that big), or just Animal Companion AU - Heartslabyul Edition
The Basic Gits: Daemons are the external physical manifestation of a person's 'inner-self' that takes the form of an animal. Usually the daemon will have the opposite gender from their human. During childhood, daemon can change into any animal but when human matured, their daemon settle into a permanent form (you can’t choose the final animal form). When a human die, their daemon will turn to dust. And it’s taboo for a human to touch any daemon except their own.
It has been a long time since I watched/read The Golden Compass, so I might get some points wrong. I technically made this before the whole Yana Toboso interview that said there would be more familiar. And in the discord server I was like “My daemon au is confirm!” XD
This is a personal choices with a help from a friend. This is harder than I thought it would be. Discussion is much welcome. I’ll be only making for the humans. So, no beastman, mermaid, ghost, fae, or any mythical creatures.
.
.
.
Ace Trappola
His daemon name is Penelope. In Greek, the name means ‘weaver’. It is also the name of the hero Odysseus’s faithful wife.
Penelope settled into your regular urban raccoon. Raccoons are known to be a trickster, just like Ace. The culprit who knock down your outdoor trashcan. The black mark around their eyes resemblance of a thief mask, thus they’re often associated to thievery. But this also show their intelligence to be able to steal food without anyone noticing. And with the busy and dangerous city road, a raccoon need to adapt and be resourceful with their surrounding. Thus, they can also represent craftiness, resourcefulness, problem-solving, tenacity, adaptability, and endurance.
I want a raccoon representation in this AU, so I’m giving it to Ace lol.
Deuce Spade
His daemon name is Carwen. It’s the female variant of Carwyn, a Welsh name means “blessed love”.
Carwen settles into a flame skimmer dragonfly. From many colors available, we get an orange one that will compliment Deuce’s blue aesthetic. Dragonflies may represent, growth, transformation, impermanence, ephemerality, or adolescence. Because dragonflies, both as nymphs and as adults, are such prolific hunters, dragonflies may also be connected with acuity, agility, and ferocity. In addition, dragonflies are typically born in the summer, and as we know, it’s the holiday. But can also be the time of nostalgia and connection to the youth.
Right from the get go I wanted Deuce to have something that symbolize change/metamorphosis. I can’t pick butterfly because we all know who will get that, so a dragonfly it is.
Cater Diamond
His daemon name is  Avyukth. It’s a Sanskrit girl name means "Peace of Mind; Clear as Crystal; Name of Lord Krishna." Cater gave her “Avie” as a nickname.
Avie settles into a potbellied pig. Pig symbolism is fascinating and varied depending on which side of the world you're in. In English language, there are many idioms where pigs become the subject, like "pearls before swine", "when pigs fly" dan "whole hog", thus giving pigs the symbol of gluttony or slovenliness. But, in China, pigs become the first animal to be domisticated, thus connecting it with domesticity, the home, and the success of the family. It can also symbolize status, wealth, prosperity, honesty, and virtue. Not to mention, pig is one of the animal in the twelve zodiac despite overslept and took up the rear.
For Cater, I was looking for “animal that's kinda sus” and found out that ‘Sus’ the genus of wild and domestic pigs. After that, a friend suggested those little teacup pig. I’ve never heard about it so I looked up and hoo boy it did not disappointed. With the many symbolism of the pig, we can take this as not really knowing Cater daemon’s true reason of her settled animal.
Trey Clover
His daemon name is   Frideswide. It’s a  modern form of the Old English name Friðuswiþ. It is formed of the elements frip, which means ‘peace’ and swib, which means ‘strong.’
Frideswide settles into a Newfoundland god. When you think of dogs, the first thought is usually the term “a man’s best friend”, an animal that will give you unconditional love and devotion. They are also a fierce protector and a faithful companion with their endurance, perseverance, domesticity, and playfulness in life.
I kinda joked around that I’ll be giving Trey a companion animals, and the first pick is a dog. For the breed, Newfoundland dog can be a great mama (other than Labrador Retriever), and also a symbol of hard work and genuine loyalty.
Riddle Rosehearts
His daemon name is   Aurealana. It’s a combination of two words; ‘aurea’ which means “golden” in Latin, and “alana” which  can be derived from the Irish language term "a leanbh" for "child".
Aurealana settles into a Northern mockingbird. From it's habit of "mocking", these birds represent learning, memorization, plagiarism, and music. Mockingbirds are also socially monogamous and will go out of their way to choose a partner who aggressively defends the nest and is an active and devoted parent, thus they can also represent communication, stability, defense, protection, parenthood, or commitment.
From the beginning, I know that Riddle has to have a bird daemon. It’s the usual ‘bird can fly, flying means freedom’ and Riddle being in his mother control feels like ‘a bird trapped in a birdcage’. I also headcanon Mama Rosehearts has a big cat daemon, or something like a lion or tiger, which makes it scarier compare to Riddle’s small bird.

Rebels Rewatch: "An Inside Man"
The beginning of my endless stressed paranoia about Thrawn, also obvious reveal is obvious.
I expect this recap to be pretty breezy, I've already liveblogged this episode once.
Hoo boy I cannot tell you the amount of tension there was before this episode. The TV adverts were packaging the footage from both this and "Visions And Voices" together in order to hype up the midseason closer, before the show went on break for the winter.
So you know, the hype was real.
Let's get into it.
[EDIT: Oh screw you, Tumblr, that was a whole forty minutes of work that you just ate, this is ridiculous.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right, so that's not subtle at all.
Tumblr media
In addition to leaning heavily into the "Axis-occupied territory in WWII" aesthetic, the smog around Capital City is so much thicker, practically a new ozone layer, ammonia yellow in color. That is not sunset that is the city lights bouncing off the cloud of pollution wafting through their streets.
I haven't mentioned it before but Taylor Gray sometimes has this way of pronouncing the word "my" that gives Ezra just a little bit more of a "folksy" drawl, fitting for an Outer Rim farming planet. I do love how you can kind of "geolocate" where different characters come from by how they talk. High British or Imperial British accent? Core World. Southern American drawl? Outer Rim.
Now imagine Pryce with an accent like Ezra's and remember that every time she speaks she's totally faking her Core World accent. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks a bit like downtown LA, frankly. Minus the skyscrapers.
Yeah no, still love this shot Ezra pulls off while balancing precariously on the speeder engine. Such skill. Much badass.
The Kanan-Ezra tag team against the walker is great too.
Oh! Just noticed the non-fanfare titlecard has a bit of the dark male chorus from Thrawn's theme. Nice.
Something nice to note, the show does multiple chase sequences on this highway and none of them feel identical to each other. They're all uniquely staged.
I rewatched a couple times and the second speeder was actually taken out by debris from the first, bouncing forward and ricocheting off something.
Fitting right in with the WWII theme, internal saboteurs at the Imperial factories is very French Resistance. I honestly didn't expect to see the Sumars again so this was a pleasant surprise. Also a bit sad now, considering what happens.
*whispers* They paralleled Mr. Sumar's first conversation with Ezra.
This attack on Lothal's factories has been in the planning for a while now, since Season Two at least I think. Even though we were driven off Lothal, it's never been far from mind, and we've been constantly trying to get back there to liberate it. To Phoenix Cell and the Alliance it's a matter of strategy, of crippling or slowing down the Empire's war machine, but for the Spectres, for Ezra, it's personal, and it's been their focus from the very beginning. (Mostly. Ezra does get sidetracked with his obsession of personally destroying the Sith. More to meta ramble about that later when we get to "Twin Suns".)
Ha ha I remember when we all thought that the "new type of weapon" being referenced here was the Death Star. And personally, as I've said before, I still think Lothal was heavily involved in the Death Star's construction, that process was spread out across multiple Outer Rim worlds, resources and materials gathered from all over the place to keep it secret.
But once they introduced Thrawn they kind of had to give him a personal connection to Lothal, too. His rivalry with Hera wouldn't have cut it, that can play out anywhere, in any theater. (Hera's own stake in Lothal is also tenuous, generic, halfway between Ezra's personal drive and the Alliance's practical strategic considerations.) His being there at Pryce's bequest to help quell the Rebellion there offers no personal incentive outside of serving the Empire. But putting him in charge of the TIE Defender's development is perfect, in-character and easy to fit into what had already been established about Lothal, that it was a primary location where new TIEs were being produced.
Recall that Thrawn is not opposed to the Empire's tyrannical authoritarianism but he does think it's often ineffective. Advocating for the development of superior starfighters is right up his alley. If Thrawn had had his way or Palpatine had listened to him more, the resources, materials, and labor pooled into the showy but money-guzzling Death Star would have gone instead to bolstering the Empire's naval superiority, into better faster starfighters, more Inderdictors, and more capital ships like the Super Star Destroyers. Things to counteract the Alliance's flashbang hit and run tactics.
And the Rebellion probably would have lost.
So yeah, giving Thrawn a pet project specialized TIE fighter to be developed and constructed on Lothal was the perfect narrative decision.
...I went way off into the weeds there didn't l? Lol. Where was I?
Right, infiltrating the factory.
Love when Mr. Sumar asks Ezra if has any manufacturing experience and when he admits no, Ryder laughs and says he'll fit right in. Commie-style forced labor gang-pressing yaaaaaay!
Tumblr media
Once again, the imagery is very deliberate and not at all subtle.
Ezra grew up on Lothal and he doesn't know who Pryce is on sight. This bitch been shirking her planetary governing duties for literal years, busy trying to be "hip and in with the cool kids" as it were, the perfect Imperial suck-up and sycophant.
A large part of Thrawn's effectiveness as a villain in Rebels is that you never quite know just how much he knows at any given time. Was his coming to the factories to inspect them just an unlucky coincidence or did he know Kanan and Ezra were going to be there? Is he just Dangerously Genre Savvy? How does he keep turning up in places right when the Rebels have made their move? It stressed me the crap out when I was originally watching, gave me hella Paranoia Fuel, and made his presence in every scene just that much more uncomfortable.
Tumblr media
Like right here, with this scene where they linger just long enough on Thrawn observing the disguised Ezra to make you nervous, and the feeling lingers even though he steps away, because you almost think he picks Sumar out of the line-up because Ezra's there, targeting him for execution (basically) in order to flush Ezra out.
Also, btw, love the menacing cellos that accompany Thrawn's footsteps into frame.
The absolute slow dread and dramatic irony of this whole scene. D: It just builds and builds and then explodes (literally and figuratively), Thrawn's theme coming in full strength to emphasize the horror of the moment.
See, Thrawn's not above Make An Example Of Them when he thinks it's effective. (See also having Rukh behead that one officer in Legends canon.)
Lyste, you really should start questioning when Imperial astromech droids act crazy randomly around you lol.
It's a smidge distractingly fortuitous that there's always a convenient Scout Trooper around for Ezra to steal the armor off of.
This scene between Pryce, Kallus, and Thrawn is like some kind soothing British ASMR, everyone's voices are just so calm and smooth.
Tumblr media
Ooof, Thrawn's rare displays of emotion are always a big deal, I flinched just from this tiny flash of anger.
Something else effective about Thrawn's presence is just how much more competent other Imperials start acting when he's around. Not officers like Lyste or Konstantine but the low-level grunts always seem more keen to cop on to things, just a bit smarter and more ruthless, when Thrawn's in an episode, like he brings them up to more rigorous standards of performance just by being there.
Probably why Pryce immediately falls apart and makes stupid impulsive decisions as soon as he's more than thirty feet away from her lol.
Tumblr media
So there's Sabine's wall graffiti, already pulled off the building, I think that painting is from TCW, there's Ezra cadet picture, the mosaic from the Syndulla house, and a bunch of ancient Loth-cave scribblings.
I suspect Thrawn grabbed the retaining wall for the starbird (incidentally getting the Loth-cat drawing he'd later use to identify Sabine's work on Ezra's helmet in "Through Imperial Eyes"), and the cave paintings, obviously, because ancient Lothal culture.
Once again, Thrawn's deductions are razor sharp, but not OP. He's noticed the Phoenix cell has a particular attachment to Lothal, thus they will inevitably try to return to it.
Slowed down and replayed Kallus revealing himself a couple times just to look at this fight, Kanan starts by elbowing Kallus straight in the collar. Kallus reflexively throws a punch which gets pushed aside by Ezra. Kallus almost kitten bats the two of them before Kanan pins him to the wall.
Still LOVE how utterly flabbergasted Kanan and Ezra are at the reveal and how much grief they continue to give him after it lol.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: Kallus gives his very slight double-take at Kanan when Kanan pulls off his helmet, like he's surprised to see the scarring across his eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Living for how much Ezra just casually bullies Kallus here. <3
"Or perhaps... an expected one." Lol nope, I can safely assure you, Thrawn, they did NOT expect Kallus to be Fulcrum.
Case in point about Thrawn's mere presence making everyone else more competent, the AT-AT pilots immediately question the AT-DP's presence.
This was really clever, having Ezra drive the chicken walker behind the AT-AT and use it for cover. I may have mentioned but it bears repeating.
Tumblr media
MONEY SHOT.
Tumblr media
Back when the show was airing and people were speculating about eventual defeats for Thrawn I think I was one of the very small number of people rooting for Marida Sumar to get to shoot him in the face.
Still want that AU.
TIE Defenders be no joke, people. They are fast, agile, shielded, and they have hyperdrives. They would have shredded the best the Alliance had.
Tumblr media
Still love Zeb's chagrined grimace in the background there.
Ngl, once again, the ambiguity of "Just how much does Thrawn know?" is scarily effective. Thrawn's addressing Kallus seems deliberately calculated, like he's making some kind of subtle threat.
And whew!
After the shaky quality of the last episode this return to form is quite a relief. The tension is tightly wound and palpable throughout, and there's a genuine sense of danger. Thrawn is placidly competent. We suffer an actual loss. Everything is pretty much excellent this episode, even without the benefit of seeing Kallus's turn we believe it.
Love rewatching this one. <3

WARNING: slight spoiler for The Glory
NGL I genuinely assumed that they were going to make Jeon Jae Joon, from the The Glory, the male lead or one of the love interests. Since he was a bystander to the brutal bullying of Moon Dong Eun and was not seen participating physically in it (which is just as bad).
I thought they were going to make his character similar to Rui Hanazawa/Yoon Ji-Hoo from Hana Yori Dango/Boys over Flowers. Someone who was friends with bullies but didn't do much to stop it. I'm glad they didn't go through this route. I never liked the idea of it.
In the first episode, it looked like he might have felt guilty or sympathetic towards Moon Dong Eun while she was being tortured in the assembly hall. But nope, I was wrong. This man didn't give a crap at what his friends were doing and might have found the whole thing uninteresting and never his problem.
Like the man had the money and power to stop it, compared to other students, he just didn't. Like he wasn't going to lose anything from stopping it.
As the show progressed, it became clear that Jeon Jae Joon shared the same violent tendencies as his friends.
I'm currently on ep 6 so I don't how his character is going to evolve (or devolve) in the next two episodes and in Season 2.
Hopefully they criticise him for being a bystander. There could be a scene where Jeon Jae Joon is like: Why are you going after me?! I didn't do anything to you!
And Moon Dong Eun is like: You stood and watched while I screamed as they burned me. You're just as guilty as they are.
Maybe he did physically hurt her and we aren't shown it yet.
Maybe he is involved in the murder of the previous bullied victim (So-hee was it? Don't remember her name). We saw how violently he reacted when his classmate made fun of his colour-blindness.
So-hee might have angered him (NOT HER FAULT) resulting in him pushing to her death. But on second thoughts, there isn't any signs to show that he was involved in it and was probably Park Yeon Jin. Maybe he was and has gotten over it. He didn't feel any remorse for Dong Eun so why would he feel the same way for So-Hee. Probably just happy he got away with it.
This was supposed to be a much shorter post but I just rambled my thoughts. Sorry if it didn't make sense. Quite sleepy actually.
That's it.
EDIT: finished the show. I was wrong, Jae Joon also tormented her. Should’ve watched the whole show before writing this. Oh well.
was also wrong about So-Hee’s murder. Park Yeon Jin was guilty all along apparently

Director Ishihara ✕ Chief Director Ogawa Discussion (re: Sound! Euphonium ~ Ensemble Contest)
Tumblr media
My translation of the discussion featured here on the official Eupho site. Figured it might be worthwhile since I suspect Ogawa's gonna be a major figure at KyoAni in the coming decade. Caveat lector though.
A Prologue to the Kumiko 3rd Year Arc
─Special Edition: Sound! Euphonium ~ Ensemble Contest (Ensemble) is the first entry in four years for the Sound! Euphonium (Eupho) series, and production is currently underway. How’s it going?
Ishihara: Coming back to Eupho again…hoo boy, it’s a handful! (Laughs)
Ogawa: (Laughs) The animation for the instruments and stuff can give us trouble here and there, but in my opinion, this is the sort of anime where the real problem is figuring out how to portray the drama. First of all, Ensemble was originally planned to be an OVA, and also Ensemble is tied to the Kumiko 3rd year arc (scheduled to air in 2024), so I’ve been thinking about how that’s gonna work.
─So at first it was planned to be an OVA?
Ishihara: The Kumiko 3rd year arc in 2024 is still pretty far away, and we know we’re keeping the fans waiting, so we got to talking and felt that we should have something in the mean time. To that end, there was a story in the novels from the back half of 2nd year that we didn’t portray in Sound! Euphonium the Movie ~ The Promised Finale (Chikai no Finale) about Kumiko’s first efforts as club president with the ensemble contest. We decided it’d be a good idea to put it out as a standalone episode. In terms of composition, we made it like an extension of the TV series. However some time later, it had turned into something we could show as a film, so we made it with the big screen in mind. Truth be told, the drawing count really got away from us. (Laughs) It might not look quite as flashy as a movie, but I think you can look forward to it with tempered expectations: it's a depiction of unspectacular everyday life.
─You talked a bit about it being tied to Kumiko’s 3rd year arc. How exactly does Ensemble fit in with the series?
Ogawa: I think one of the biggest points is that it serves as a prologue to Kumiko being club president. The first season closely depicts the activities of the wind ensemble club, and the second season focused on the human relationships. When I think about what’s interesting in the Kumiko 3rd year arc, the biggest thing has gotta be how Kumiko’s future is shaping up now that she’s a club president. Ensemble is connected to the 3rd year arc, so this fits in as a prologue to her being president.
The balance of realism and entertainment
─What’s been at the front of your mind while making Ensemble?
Ogawa: This applies to the whole of Sound! Euphonium, not just Ensemble, but when it comes to the wind ensemble itself, to my mind, the keyword is “lifelike,” or “realistic.” “Like you're really there.” We’ve been very much focused on balancing this goal with making it entertaining as anime.
Ishihara: Absolutely, that’s exactly what we were thinking when we were making Eupho and pursuing that sense of verisimilitude in animation. Drawing the instruments as realistically as we could and all…
Ogawa: That said, sometimes you'll have a scene that just screams "hey, make me a highlight!" and you can end up over-directing it, so it’s pretty hard.
Ishihara: Yep, that’s it, that’s the experience. Just because you have flashy scenes doesn’t mean you’re telling your story, and in fact you can often tell a story by resolving the characters’ emotions without having any flashy scenes at all.
Ogawa: On the other hand, I do think it’s better to do something anyway and regret it than not to do it at all, even if it ends up over-directed and loses that sense of realism, because there really are a lot of cases where it turns out better as a result…I’m constantly struggling with that feeling.
Ishihara: Also, and this doesn’t have anything to do with directing, but there are some seniors who show up who’ve moved on from the band, which I think people will like.
─It’s been about four years since the last Eupho visual project. What does the staff look like?
Ogawa: There are a lot of people who watched Eupho as students and told me they joined Kyoto Animation because they liked it so much. Their desire to do something great really comes across.
Ishihara: Part of me wondered what’ll happen now that there’s so much new staff who hasn’t worked on Eupho before, but they draw Eupho the same as always, and with utmost care. It makes me so glad. It’s been a long time since we’ve drawn instruments, but the movement in the marimba cuts is so good to the point where it looks nearly like it was rotoscoped. Nope! It was all animated solely from the reference footage.
Ogawa: Man, the staff is working so hard. It used to be that even when we used 3DCG, we needed to retouch it to give it texture. That caused us all kinds of trouble. Since then, the 3D and compositing staff have improved even more and come up with all kinds of tools. As the series has incremented, we’ve all really come to appreciate the advantages of both 2D and 3D animation. We’d like to improve ourselves even more with the Kumiko 3rd year arc.
Eupho: Past and Present
─You mentioned instruments. Regarding the music, I hear the piece you planned on using, “Omens of Love,” is the subject of some discussion.
Ogawa: There’s a passage in Ensemble that features “Omens of Love.” I was in charge of the boards for half of Ensemble, and at first there weren’t plans to use any musical compositions. However, when it became a theatrical project, we decided to utilize a piece since there was a passage that we wanted to really make an impression. When we asked around our staff involved with the wind ensemble what sort of piece they thought would be good, there were a lot of people who answered “Omens of Love.” It was a song I’d heard of through a few places too, and I think it really fits. The more I listened to it, the more I liked it, the more I got jazzed about the idea. (Laughs)
─How did recording with the wind ensemble go?
Ishihara: The performers are mostly all different from the first season, but it’s still the same ol’ Eupho. Ogawa-kun, you hadn’t participated in the recording before. What did you think?
Ogawa: It really got to me. I’d been invited to regular concerts, so I’ve heard live performances before, and those were plenty moving too of course, but this time I was listening to them closer up, and it just felt more imminent somehow…the sense of presence was just amazing. So many people were gathered for the purpose of making just one cartoon, and yet a lot of people came to tell me how much they liked Eupho. We were recording a short version of Omens of Love, and yet I was very impressed with how Ouwada-sensei and everyone else from the orchestra came up with all these forward-looking proposals for the trimming process, taking on the role of creators in their own right.
─It sounds like real teamwork
Ogawa: I came to truly understand how broad the domain is about which I know nothing. I learned a lot at the recordings, but there’s no way that could possibly cover everything, so it really did have the sense that this was something everyone was making together. What about you, Ishihara? You’ve been to these recordings so often…
Ishihara: It’s really interesting to hear a performance up close. I love places where people are making stuff, like workshops, and, of course, my own workplace included. The audio recording studio has the feel of a “maker space” too, so it just feels really comfy.
Ogawa: There are some things that you can just feel how good they are in your bones. There are some takes where you know it’s good the moment you hear it, and everyone else feels the same way. That’s not specialist knowledge; that’s just what’s so interesting about music: it really is a common tongue.
─There are some new cast members, and some who haven’t dubbed Eupho in many years. Was there anything remarkable about the dubbing process?
Ishihara: We talked some about realism and entertainment at the start, and my own directorial sensibilities have changed since the first TV season as well. Around the time of the first season, Eupho had a lot of instances of anime-like comical modes of expression, but those have gradually faded. I think the cast’s delivery has transitioned from something more anime-like to something closer to realism.
Ogawa: I feel that there were a lot of times when the sound director, (Youta) Tsuruoka, was putting a ton of passion into his directing. During the dubbing process, Tsuruoka was like “do it like you just want to start it all over again. Do it with the feeling that you want to tear down everything you’ve done up to now.” I got the sense that Tsuruoka had a very clear idea of what he wanted. I interpreted it as him proceeding under the premise that even if you break from what came before it won’t truly be a break, and that he’d see what feelings each cast members would take with them as they took their fresh start. People were saying things like “if you’re not growing, you’re doing it wrong,” and just as the cast took that attitude and grew a bit, so too did their characters – at least that’s how it felt to me.
The vision behind Kumiko Oumae’s depiction
Ogawa: There was one other thing that really left an impression on me from the dubbing, and that’s regarding Kumiko. Up until now the structure has been that other characters would be having problems and Kumiko would be looking on, but looking towards the 3rd year arc, it’s more about Kumiko herself. Tsuruoka talked with (Tomoyo) Kurosawa – Kumiko’s voice actress – about the nuances of “how to finally express the story of Kumiko Oumae.” They also discussed how to “leverage everything they had up to now,” and I thought “ahh, I see now.” It’s not a “connecting” but rather a “leveraging” process that will drive our progress towards something new, or something like that. It’s something I thought about in productions meetings and stuff regarding how to tell Kumiko Oumae’s story. As production progresses, there are times when that theme becomes so obvious that it actually becomes invisible. I came to be painfully aware of that while listening to Tsuruoka’s direction, feeling quite thankful for it, and at the same time feeling the pressure knowing that nothing will escape Tsuruoka’s eye. (Laughs)
─Do you have a message for the fans?
Ogawa: There will be new compositions in this one, so those are the places to watch and listen carefully. The power of theatrical audio equipment for listening to music is unmistakable, so I hope you all like it. I’m looking forward to it too! If you’d all walk on down to the theaters, I’d be much obliged.
Ishihara: I think we're taking a new start headed towards the Kumiko third year arc. As with everything else in life, it’s a lot fun declare “it all starts here!” and take that first step straight forward. I think that feeling is what this work is all about. You’ll be getting a glimpse of the Kumiko of the future. I hope you all enjoy it.

Audio Drama Sunday III
Woo! Been a good week with many walks beneath the cherry blossoms. Weather has been kind of exceptional but weird with the early season trees all seeming to have not flourished this year but the mid seasons are out in full flush. Podcasts have of course been my companions on my walks though I've sprinkled in a bit more music into my headphone time than usual.
As is becoming my usual going to go over my week to week waits.
Magnus is of course on hiatus which I think everyone is keenly feeling. Stay strong friends.
@innbetween released their patrons only episode and hoo boy I just got socked right in the feels. I know I can't get too spoiler-y but the portrayal of bullying, ableist horse pucky was so well done! I can't keep changing my favorite character episode to episode right? Y’k’ty currently has the top spot. Something about Emma's voicework being so deliberate and acerbic makes me feel like I am sitting watching a character speaking with the physiology of a dragon muzzle with some wicked sharp teeth. I hope that comes across as the compliment I intend it to be... Anyway brilliant writing, wonderful acting and you guys on the regular release are in for a GOOD time and maybe a few cathartic tears shed.
And now onto my won't stop can't stop listen of the week which continues to be Spiritbox Radio! So far I am approaching the deep end of season 2 and it's held up beautifully. Still a sucker for that slow burn mystery of what the heck is going on with the Man in The Flat cap's ultimate plan and getting increasing worried about m'boy Oliver who seems to have knowingly signed up for the most complicated romance dynamic out there. Definitely rooting for those crazy kids as things with Sam seem to be a rollercoaster of unpleasant discoveries. Hoping against hope still there will be no further iterations of human soup!
Show editing wise it's been a bit chaotic. We've done a whole bunch of recording sessions this past week and we just need one more to complete getting everything we need to start polishing off our doozy of a season finale. It's literally an episode and a half to work on ! Anyway the day is too nice to spend much more of it inside. I hope everyone has an awesome week in audio ahead!
