marina toybina really waltzed into the my chemical romance world and proposed working on the tour herself and then got the job, proceeded to pull that cheerleader dress out in the matter of a few weeks, absolutely knocked it out of the park for the entire tour, got gerard on the new york times best dressed people of 2022, made a chainmail gown and generally was behind one of the most lifechanging events for mcr fans and trans people, is the first known public figure to use they/them for gerard way in writing, then did a podcast saying that the universe was behind all this and it was fate and destiny, and used both he/him and they/them for gerard out loud for ten whole minutes, then designed the most cunty secretary look ever and waited until several days after tour to tell us it was her. motherfucker i love her so much. welcome to the family marina

People that think Scott would ever abandon Stiles because of what happened in season 5 or season 3b make me cackle. Scott??? Turn away from a possible murderer?????? Let me just give you his track record.
- Peter Hale: Tried to make Scott kill all of his friend by forcing him to shift against his will, wake up in the middle of the forest with no recollection all while Scott was trying to understand what werewolf even was. = Amicable relationship, never forced him to part from his nephew, only ever truly fought him when he wanted to hurt others.
-Jackson: All round asshole, killed people in his sleep, literally bullied Scott and threatened to ‘out’ him to a family of werewolf hunters. = More than amicable relationship, Scott defended Jackson more than once and was the one of the only people that fought to save him.
-Gerard: do I even need to say anything.= Found a way to subdue him without killing him (#chemist Scott), didn’t harbour any bad feelings towards Chris when he healed his father in season 6
-Chris Argent: Shot him in the fucking arm for no reason, threatened to blow his brains out for being together with his daughter= literal besties
-Victoria Argent: tried to suffocate him to death= didn’t say anything to ANYONE because he didn’t want to tarnish her memory
-Deucalion: calls himself “The Demon Wolf”= besties, Scott’s trust in his goodness turned him into a pacifist and an ally on multiple occasions.
-Theo: isolated him from his pack before killing him= Didn’t completely freak out on Liam for reviving him even though Theo killed him less than six months ago. One can argue that he would’ve totally housed Theo if he knew Theo was homeless
Y’all think he would kick Stiles out for supposedly bashing one dudes brains out with a wrench??? One pesky murder??????
Scott is the walking personification of “but mother I can fix him”, he was overwhelmed at the moment with a bunch of teenagers dying and Malia wanting to kill her mum and Kira wanting to fight everyone and now Stiles supposedly killed someone. His reaction was understandable and he handled it like a champ I’d say. But he would NEVER EVER abandon his brother, murder and miscommunication be damned.

neverafter premiere night so here are some thoughts!
emily axford is truly godsent. the relationship she and ally have already crafted between ylfa and timothy, the way she plays this congested prepubescent girl, her backstory scene; god, the entirety of her backstory scene was SO good, though, i don’t know why i’m surprised. emily axford has never been anything shy of perfection and she won’t start now in a season where her ability to act really needs to shine through. also the fact that she’s playing a barbarian, i am so glad i guessed correctly because it’s going to be so fun to watch her play one especially with how they’ve set it up.
lou fucking wilson. i love everything about his character, his backstory which i LOVE that they left for last. this season seems to be one for double intros and he and zac are going to be incredible together i KNOW it. i made a few guesses as to who would be what class and NOTHING could have prepared me for him being a warlock to his stepmother, the way they’re interweaving the fairytales is brilliant i am truly so excited.
zac oyama… i love him with the entirety of my being but i couldn’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed with his backstory scene, like no way he’s just some random little cat that can speak? surely there’s more to him! i love the almost-brotherly relationship pib and pinocchio seem to have but i do have a theory i’ll run by you all: we all know in the disney retelling of cinderella, stepmother has a black cat named lucifer, i wonder if pib is another patron of pinocchio’s stepmother or maybe a familiar of hers sent to watch over pinocchio and ensure he isn’t messing things up. JUST A THOUGHT! if not, i’m genuinely very excited to get more backstory out of this character.
opening the show on siobhan’s introduction was obviously the way to go considering how beautifully she executed her scene. the briars… god, the briars. i have no issue with reading and listening to body horror and brennan painted a vivid word picture with his narration for her, it was all so good. i constantly complain about the intrepid heroes never having a ranger and they’ve finally got one and it’s the damsel princess, i absolutely adore that. i also love that rosamund still has that bit of naivety to her considering in her mind she’s still eighteen and she probably lived a pretty sheltered life all things considered. her simply knowing that there’s a prince out there looking for her and that he is her true love, i can’t wait to see what kind of spin brennan is going to put on this curse and inevitably what kind of curveball he’s going to throw siobhan/rosamund.
murph is playing this vapid and vain prince so well, but i cannot wait to see when he actually gets into this fighting that prince gerard seems to turn his nose up at. the scenes with princess elody were bordering on heartbreaking but still fully leaning into embarrassing on the prince’s part, i have an inkling as to why he’s regressing back into his frog form, as should most, but all in all i think this is going to be a pretty silly character, very cody-esque, one that i’m very excited to see and watch grow nonetheless. also, the whole exchange between prince gerard and princess rosamund, i hadn’t realized how little i’d seen murph and siobhan’s characters interact in previous seasons until i got a full and uninterrupted conversation between the two of them when their characters met and now it’s truly all i want to have them be silly little cousins fighting to protect each other.
finally, the person, the myth, the legend: ally beardsley. i hadn’t really though about how important mother goose would be to the plot as a whole until about a week before today because i know that mother goose is not only a writer of fairytales but the writer of the fairytales, so i really, really enjoyed a lot of timothy’s exposition and how much he cares for children—like ylfa—now that he’s lost his own. like i said before i am thoroughly endeared by the relationship ally and emily have already built between the two of them, and i cannot wait to watch it grow and i’m really excited to see what ally does with this character and where they go.
brennan hasn’t answered any of the questions that were asked about if this season is going to be similar to acoc in terms of lethality or if the pcs have created secondary characters, so i think it’s safe to say we should definitely be cautious considering there are no clerics in this party, but all in all i’m shaking with excitement and the thought of the rest of this season we’ve got like seventeen episodes to go and i think they’re going to be SO much fun.

Ylfa has never been the type of girl who follows the path that stretches out in front of her. So when she was confronted with writing her story anew, she could only bring herself to write a few lines:
Once upon a time, there was a young girl who loved her grandma very much. Her name was Ylfa Snorgelson. But she was better known as Little Red Riding Hood.
She tucked the page away. There was no need to write more. She would stray from the path anyway. And she knew exactly what was waiting for her at the end of the story. An old friend. A part of her lost in the final battle.
The Big Bad Wolf continues to provide an end to all the stories, but she does so in a kinder way than her predecessor. She too has remnants of memories of an adventure that she went on when a part of her was still a little girl.
The day comes, when Death meets the first of her companions again. She finds Timothy Goose surrounded by his husband and son, falling asleep peacefully.
„Old friend“, he greets Death kindly. „Thank you for joining me on this last path.“
„Of course.“
And they walk together, away from something and towards something else that no one in the world could ever understand. Tim tells death about everything he lived through. A life filled with ink, love and an occasional pickle that Tim cherishes very much.
The next two familiar faces meet the Big Bad Wolf shortly after each other. Gerard had lived a life of adventure, finally laying down his life to protect a new ally. Next to death he makes his way down a path that leads into a similar direction as Mother Goose‘s.
Pib, on the other hand, has a lot of reincarnations left. Death, to him, is merely another stop along the way. But when he meets her, he looks a little wary.
„Rest here as long as you want“, the Big Bad Wolf offers. „You deserve a little rest.“
„Thank you“, Pib meows and jumps onto the back of the Wolf that he once knew so well. Prodding his paws into the soft and warm fur, he prepares a little spot to lie down and sleep without an open eye for the first time in his many lifetimes.
Rosamund greets Death like an old friend, bowing deeply as she leaves her life behind. A life filled with wonder and grace, with adventures and saving as many young maidens from what she once knew as destiny. Now she knows it’s nothing even close to that.
„I‘m not the first, am I?“
Death shakes her big head.
„Will I see them again?“
„I don‘t know“, Death admits. „Where this path leads is hidden even from me. But that doesn‘t mean it will be bad. Quite the opposite, I believe.“
And Death turns so that Rosamund might look upon her old friend again, who is still nestled in the warm fur.
„I don‘t think this path is meant for me“, Pib says looking down the road that some of his companions have already taken.
„Then let‘s stray together“, Rosamund smiles and opens her arms. Death watches as Rosamund carries the little cat down a way that even Death herself can‘t tread.
After that, Death spends a lot of time with people she doesn‘t know, but cares about deeply nonetheless.
Then, one night, an older man finds himself by her side. He looks at Death with love in his eyes, recognising something in her that the Big Bad Wolf has already forgotten.
„Will she join me?“, Pinocchio asks, lovingly running his now human hand through the dark fur.
„Was one lifetime not enough?“, Death asks, genuinely curious.
Pinocchio smiles: „Is it ever?“
The last one to join the other side is an old woman in a red cape. She has a spark in her eyes that tells of a lifetime filled with love, crazy decisions along no path anyone could ever form, and an absence of the pain that was once destined for her.
She looks at Death with kindness, not recognising her. But Death does. She looks behind what everyone else could see directly at the young girl who had once been her.
Many upon a times ago.
„Let‘s just sit for a while“, Death offers and the girl gladly accepts.
„Are you waiting at the end of every story?“
The Big Bad Wolf turns to look at her, memories of adventures and friendship returning in a way that Death never thought possible.
„This is not the end, Little Red“, she whispers quietly. „There are a lot of stories left to be written.“

Hello, sorry for the inconvenience but I wanted to know if you can do one of Chris Argent where he is married to Yn and they are expecting their second daughter since Allison is the first, also that Peter has been obsessed with Yn since they have been in high school but Yn I have always been in love with Chris.
Tumblr media
@allisonargent144, thanks for the request and it's no inconvenience, I love getting requests! I hope you enjoy your fic!
I also want to point out that I changed Allison's age to 16 and she never failed a grade because she wasn't moving all over the place. The Argent's are still hunter's but they actually stick to their code (kind of) and Chris has been in Beacon Hills since he was a child.
I still hate Gerard and Kate so Gerard still broke the code and was killed and Kate just never existed, no one needs that bitch for anything anyways.
--------------------------------------------------------
I knock on the white door of Allison's room again as I yell, "Come on Allison! You're gonna be late for school."
There's a muffled grumble, "Fine! I'm up, Jesus, give me a minute."
I roll my eyes, teenagers, yay, "Watch your mouth young lady! If you aren't downstairs in the next ten minutes I'm coming in."
I can practically feel the eyeroll that my comment earned before she mumbles out an okay and I smile as I hear her stumbling across her room.
When I walk into the kitchen Chris looks up from one of his books and smiles, "She awake?" I hum in affirmation as I grab orange juice from the fridge, "Yeah, and from the attitude I got I'm going to bet she woke up to a surprise throughout the night."
Chris snorts as I place a kiss on his cheek and slide onto the barstool beside him. He closes his book after marking the page he was on and then turned to me, "And how's our other little princess?"
I sigh as I rub my stomach, "Energetic, she'll make a great soccer player if her kicking is anything to go by." He smiles and rubs my lower back, "Only a few more months and she won't be bruising your intestines anymore."
I lean into his touch after I take a sip of orange juice, "I can't wait, but I have been asking myself why we waited so long to have another baby. I mean, I had Allison when I was 18 and now I'm 34. I wasted my 20s. I'm putting this out here for future reference, I am all for having more kids but I refuse to get pregnant once I'm 40."
Chris laughs before grabbing his coffee, "I think we held off on more kids in our 20s because Peter decided to start his whole 'Y/n's rightfully mine' movement and my father went on a killing spree. You know, I saw him the other day and he asked me if we were still married. I told him yes and he walked away grumbling about how we need to get divorced."
I roll my eyes and snort, "That man just doesn't know when to give up, honestly wish he would have stayed dead. He's been chasing me for years and I tell him every time that I love you and I always have. Makes his eyes flash blue every single time."
Before Chris has time to respond are grumpy little gremlin comes stumbling into the kitchen and grabbing a coffee cup. I smile as she gets her coffee how she likes it before she turns around and there's a shy smile on her face.
She brushes a hand through her hair before coming over and giving me a hug, "Sorry, Mom, I woke up at like 3am and had to change sheets and get a shower."
I give Chris a look that says 'I told you' before pulling away from the hug and kissing Allison's temple, "It's okay Ally, I figured something happened."
As we're getting ready to leave to drop Allison off at school, because she doesn't want to get her license, I still don't understand that one, she turns to me and whispers, "Umm, can I talk to you in the car?"
I smile and nod, "Sure, Sweetheart, come on." I grab my keys before looking at Chris, "I'll take her today, I feel like she wants some privacy."
He nods and with that Allison and I are out the door.
---------------------------------------------------------
I look at her at a stop light, "Alright, what's on your mind?"
She looks at me with a blush that I recognize almost immediately, oh this is going to be fun, Chris is going to lose his mind.
"Okay, well, do you remember Scott?" I raise an eyebrow before asking, "The bitten werewolf? The one with the really funny friend?"
She nods before speaking, "Yeah, yeah him. I was wondering if you could kind of break it to Dad that I'm dating him."
I let out a cackle and squeeze her hand, "I'll try my best, but I make no promises. He doesn't like the idea of werewolves dating Argent women."
She raises and eyebrow in question and I realize she never heard the story, "Oh my goodness, I never told you." She shakes her head and I smile, "Okay, so I met your Dad in high school, as you know. He was this attractive, older, 'bad boy' type and like every other girl my age I was enamored. Loved him from the first time he said hi."
Allison rolls her eyes with a smile as I continue, "Anyways, there was another boy, your Dad's age, named Peter." Her eyes widen, "Peter Hale? The one that bit Scott and used Lydia to resurrect him? Seriously, who uses 16 year old kids for that?"
I nod, "Yeah, that's him, anyways, he didn't know how to take no for an answer, especially after I started dating your Dad and found out about the supernatural."
She looks at me eager for details and I laugh, "Okay, well after my lest rejection to him in high school he went absolutely crazy. Like batshit crazy. Turned into a stalker and it got to the point where I was terrified he would hurt you to get to me. So, Gerard took things into his own hands and royally fucked everyone over. He did genuinely care about you but he also used Peter as an excuse to start a whole 'every supernatural creature deserves to die' lifestyle."
Allison's eyes widen, "The Hale house fire." I frown and nod, "So many undeserving people suffered, even Peter didn't deserve that, none of them did."
Allison frowns before asking, "So, what happened on your final rejection to Peter?"
I snort before telling her the story, "Okay, it was senior year and you know your father and I got married the weekend after I turned 18. Well, the last rejection in high school happened a few weeks before I turned 18...."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Flashback-
"Hey, Beautiful." I roll my eyes as I slam my locker shut to come face to face with Peter Hale. I roll my eyes before spinning on my heel to walk away. I groan slightly when I hear feet following behind me, "Come on, Beautiful, just one date."
I stop and spin around smacking the side of my face with my ponytail in the process. I look him in the eyes, before speaking "No, I already told you, I'm not interested. How many times do I have to say that?"
I spin around again and start marching down the hall to help with cheer practice but I'm stopped by a hand grabbing my forearm forcing me to stop. I huff and turn to look at Peter before ripping my arm out of his hold, "Peter, look, I've told you a million times that I'm in love with Chris. I love him and we're actually actually getting married in a few weeks, so I think it's time you got over your obsession with me."
Peter's eyes flash blue and I frown remembering the reason behind the different eye colors of a werewolf. His eyes return to their normal blue before he growls, "Why the hell are you marrying him?"
I take a deep breath trying to maintain my patience before replying, "Well for starters I love him, and maybe if you used your werewolf senses you'd know the other reason."
I cross my arms as Peter's eyes close and he focuses on his senses. His eyes fly open, lit up in the supernatural electric blue before he yells, "You're pregnant!"
I smile and nod, "Yeah, we were already engaged when I found out but we moved the wedding up a few months."
"Get rid of it."
My eyes widen and my mouth falls open, "Excuse me! What the hell, Peter?! I'm not getting rid of my baby, I have no reason to and even if I did I still wouldn't!"
He growls, eyes still glowing blue, "It should be my baby, not some low life Argent."
This time I growl, "Fuck this! Peter, get this through your stubborn, thick ass skull, we will never happen, ever! I'm in love with Chris, and I'm never going to love you! I never have and I never will! So, just leave me, Chris, and our child the hell alone or so help me god I'll put you down myself."
I storm away from him and out the doors before he has a chance to respond.
-------------------------------------------------
Present Time-
"Holy shit, Mom, I never knew you were so badass and don't even yell at me for my language you know it's true."
I roll my eyes and put the car in park, "Look, perfect timing, and maybe just a little."
She grabs her bag and jumps out the door but before she closes the door I yell her name, "Allison!" She turns around and tilts her head in question, "I'll talk to your Dad, but no promises it'll end pretty."
She smiles and cheers, "Yes! You're the best, Mom."
She runs off slamming the door and I watch as she runs straight to Scott excitedly talking to him. He looks up and makes eye contact with me before smiling and waving. I smile and wave back before remembering something.
I pull up to where Scott, Stiles, and Allison are talking with the window down and I catch part of there conversation, "Guys, my Mom just told me that when she was in high school Peter Hale was obsessed with her and when he tried to keep her from having me and marrying Dad, she went all badass and cussed him out before storming out like the badass she is!"
I chuckle slightly when Stiles responds, "Dude, I'm just saying, I told you she was badass when I met her. She's freaking awesome."
I decide to make my presence known after that, "You're right, I am pretty awesome."
All three jump before Allison turns to me, "Are you spying on me?"
I shake my head, "Nope, just forgot to tell you I love you, and good luck on your chemistry test. That Mr. Harris is a complete ass."
I faintly hear Stiles not so quietly whisper, "She keeps getting better and better." I ignore him when Allison smiles and responds, "Thanks Mom, and I love you too."
-------------------------------------------------------
I kiss Chris on the cheek when I walk into the living room before ripping of the Band-Aid, "Allison's dating, Scott McCall."
I walk straight out of the room barely stopping to talk to him and I have to bite back a smile when I hear his book hit the floor, "She's what?!"

He calls Red kid.
Shouldn’t have put the kid on team extraction. We need to figure out what’s going on with this kid. If she’s hurt, Gerard, the biggest coward Pinocchio’s ever known, fucking Gerard, challenges the perpetrator to a duel.
Pinocchio’s not sure why he’s jealous, nor is he sure that’s the emotion. He knows a book won’t win you a fight. The rules of a sword don’t matter when the game’s played with magic.
Red’s no kid. She’s a monster, and Pinocchio thinks that with no judgement. No, just jealousy--though the emotion is still murky. She said she chose her path, but Pinocchio doesn’t buy it. Monsters make the path. Monsters make the rules. Monsters can be better than mothers, if the monster’s like Red and the mother is like his own.
When Pinocchio would smart-talk his dad, his dad would say wisdom’s a burden no child should have to bear. He thought it was his dad smart-talking him back, but he can’t ask for clarity now. All he has of his dad is the blood on his nose.
That same wisdom is what clarifies his emotion. He is not jealous of Red: they are allies in fates they did not choose, even if hers is preferable.
He is jealous of Gerard, who had the option to run and hide. Who believes that horror is temporal and not permanent. Who can call someone who’s fought battles he’s only read about kid, without a single trace of irony.
Pinocchio has lied. He’s been rude. He didn’t really have a choice.
He is jealous that Gerard, the kid’s, only punishment was to turn into a frog.

Stiles and Allison are twins and they were raised by Chris (and only Chris) 'cause Chris was Claudia's best friend — Claudia was a hunter, but a good and sane one, she also had magic, so...yeah — and when the Sheriff started drinking a lot, Chris just thought it would be better if he took Stiles and Allison for a while, but for a while became him legally adopting the twins 'cause the Sheriff died in duty. Chris then takes Stiles and Ally away from Beacon Hills and never plans to go back to the city that took so much of him and his kids.
Time goes by and the twins are now 17 and Chris needs to go back to Beacon Hills 'cause the Argent Matriarch wants him to end Gerard and Kate once and for all, seeing that they're a shame for the Argent name. Chris gives Stiles and Allison a option: they can go back with him or stay in the city they're living now. Chris promises that if they choose to stay he won't hold it against them. Both decide to go.
When they arrive at the Beacon Hills High School, Scott was immediately obsessed with Allison, and she wasn't interested 'cause her interest was all on Lydia. Scott kept stalking Allison and asking her out and being creepy in general. Stiles had enough, he started asking around about Scott and found out Scott is a Werewolf, which is good for him he can use that to threaten Scott, since he and Allison were trained to be hunters by their mom and Chris since they were like 4 or something. Stiles tries threatening Scott in every way possible, but it doesn't seem to go through the stupid wolf's head he's being threatened so Stiles just says "Fuck it" and shoots Scott's ass...Literally. Stiles shoots Scott right in the ass, with arrows and bullets (silver bullets, 'cause he isn't shooting to kill). And even if they don't get along, Scott goes to whine about it to Derek.
Derek knows that there's a hunter family that just moved to Beacon Hills, but he expected them to be sane and reasonable, since they followed all rules and protocols, but apparently he was wrong. Derek goes to confront Stiles about why he shot an innocent werewolf, to which Stiles replies "Innocent? I'm sorry but your beta might be innocent of murder, but he isn't innocent AT ALL. He has been stalking my sister since we moved here, you see, she likes them sane so she didn't waste time on him. She is tired of telling him to leave her alone. I'M tired of threatening your fucking stupid beta to stay away from my sister. He doesn't listen. So yeah, I might have overreacted by shooting him so many times, but I can't say I wouldn't do it again 'cause I would. And if he still keeps being creepy and keeps stalking my sister, then I WILL shoot to kill and I wouldn't be punished for it 'cause I would be on my right." Derek stays silent for a bit and then says "Fair enough. Though I have to say, he's not my beta, he's part of my pack just enough to avoid having an omega running wild here." Stiles shrugs and says "Well, now that this is solved, is there anything else I can help you with?" to which Derek replies "Yes. You can go on a date with me, what do you think?" and Stiles replies "Why yes, I would be honoured to go on a date with you."
The date goes extremely well that 5 years later they get married. Allison and Lydia are the wedding planners. And Lydia proposes to Allison not long after Sterek's wedding.

Btw, i wanted to ask: what makes you hc Gerry as transfem? I'm more of a nb/transmasc gerry leaning person but i love reading about different interpretations of characters and you are obviously very passionate About it (feel free to ignore if its an uncomfortable question, there's no judgement behind it-im just curious.)
hello hello! no worries, i didn't perceive any judgment here, this is all in good fun! my gerry is on the nonbinary side of transfem anyway (which to me is an important thing to portray in general) but it is special to me both for logical reasons and just because it just feels so healing to me. i wrote a big meta about it here a really long time ago, and answered a more recent ask here, so i'll mostly just link those to avoid being too repetitive.
however, to me (just me personally!) the logic comes in as like... mary calls him gerard. she doesn't exactly strike me as a supportive ally parent who would gender her trans son correctly. eric also refers to gerry as his son, and he died when gerry was like 2, which is a little early for a kid to know they're trans. thirdly, he has a canon preference for a nickname that Isn't the name his mother calls him, which to me can signify dysphoria, and that chosen name happens to be a little more androgynous! plenty of women use the same nickname.
i don't believe canon gerry would have really had much of a chance to explore this side of him, as i also just believe he's a late bloomer, so to me it usually comes out easier in AUs where he's able to live for once. live free of his oppressive mother and her expectations of A Son And Heir, live free of the violence of his childhood and the things she made him do, live as a softer person. i think he would benefit from letting himself be softer, i think he would feel healthier and stronger and more himself if he gained some distance from The Son And Heir archetype forced on him from Pretty Much Birth. there are things to be said about what's expected of "sons" and how awfully people are often treated to try and mold them into the right kind of son, and that's something that gerry's story strikes close to for me.
all of that, and i also just find tenderness in this HC that fills my heart with love! i have gotten to write some really beautiful moments of exploration and intimacy and solidarity through this portrayal of him and it's just been so warm. so many people, especially on this site and especially fucking lately, have been expressing ideas that suggesting that someone might be transfem is inappropriate compared to suggesting that someone might be transmasc, that being transfem is a bad thing or a curse or an insult, and ngl it's all such bullshit.
we need kinder and more loving portrayals of transfeminine people of all walks just in general. and sometimes you just get the egg vibes off of somebody and it's okay. so, yes! i simply think estrogen could have saved her.

now that I've said my piece, I need everyone (my 3 followers who don't know what the fuck I'm talking about) to know that this episode has only further pushed my gerard/elody "allies or enemies" agenda. are they allies or enemies? this WILL be the death of me.

I promised a post elaborating on the ordering of the one-on-ones, and I’m here to deliver! Be prepared for some VERY passionate structural and functional analysis.
So the order was Lou/Pinocchio -> Zac/Pib -> Siobhan/Rosamund -> Emily/Ylfa -> Murph/Gerard -> Ally/Timothy and here’s why this is brilliant and Brennan was very smart in picking this order:
First, Pinocchio is an EXCELLENT place to begin. PERFECT for establishing tone and ambiance and stakes for the multiverse/body jumping that is going to be repeating across the other characters WITHOUT too much lore-dumping upfront specifically because the Stepmother is so deliberately withholding and obfuscating. We get all the VIBES of what’s going on without getting much detail about the mechanics or rules of this crossing.
We follow that up with Pib. Also an inspired choice. We get a much needed reprieve from, y’know, all the child abuse in Pinocchio’s segment, and we learn a bit more about how this is all working. Specifically, not only the notion that the same characters appear across stories (which was mentioned in Pinocchio’s, with the horrifying detail that that Pinocchio had to die for this Pinocchio to enter that world) but that the same archetypes can transcend individual characters and stories entirely. This is brilliant to reinforce so soon after we see the Stepmother again because (as we’ve suspected since episode 2 at least with the mirror) she is the only entity of that type that we’ve encountered so far.
Also one of my favorite books as a really young child was called ‘Cat and Bear’ and it was about a cat named Cat who was a little stinker, so idk this segment was weirdly nostalgic and warm and fuzzy
Next, ROSAMUND. CINDERELLA. HOT WOMEN. What else is there to say? Well, we’re back to the plot that the Stepmother was alluding to but not stating outright. We learn more about the mechanics and rules of this world, and in addition to confirming how the crossings work, we get the pivotal piece of information that these other stories are (a) not infinite and (b) getting progressively worse as the better stories are either exhausted or die off.
Cinderella is also key as, three one-on-ones in, we are getting our most reliable narrator to date. She gives Rosamund a clear goal, something to drive the plot forward that’s less cryptic than the book.
And on a beautiful fucking nat 20, Rosamund gains an incredible awareness of her past lives and other stories that supercharged her character arc. I wonder if it is for that awareness that Rosamund (and Ylfa) didn’t get new character portraits when they crossed over: that they are able to retain more of a fundamental essence of self (Rosamund because of the nat 20, Ylfa because she succeeded on the CHAR save).
Coming off of Rosamund’s almost empowering note, the affective roller coaster continues with Ylfa, in which Emily Axford breaks my heart for like thirty minutes straight and I thank her for doing so. We get more of a glimpse of the rules and forces at work in this world, the Wolf continues to be my absolute favorite metaphysical NPC in Dimension 20 history.
Again, each session dovetails beautifully with and builds off of the one-on-one before it to show us new aspects of how this masterwork of a world functions, all while varying tone and affect in a way that isn’t jarring but keeps interest throughout the 2+ hours. I can’t gush enough about how much I admire all of the intrepid heroes and their role-playing skills.
And it was Murph’s segment that made me want to make this post in the first place. Obviously the intrepid heroes did not know what was going on in everyone else’s sessions, but the timing of Gerard as comedic relief is SO perfect. Such an excellent follow-up to Ylfa, again another point of reprieve as Murph commits to Gerard just not fucking getting the concept that we as an audience have had presented to us now for four different characters.
And again, the presence of the fairy brings us back to the PlotTM. We’re getting a sense not for the metaphysical bigger picture but the factions that are at war in this world and the consequences that their fight is having for everyone else. We also get a delicious seed of interparty ~drama~ as Rosamund and Gerard (and Pinocchio) are being courted by different sides in this tale-spanning battle. I NEED to see how much they all tell each other when they finally meet back up again...
Finally, we end with Timothy because, like, how could we possibly end anywhere else than with the storyteller? The book is one of the keys to understanding this world and takes on additional symbolic weight as the characters are passing through to another story, a different, darker book.
But there’s still hope. Things are going to be harder this time around, but there’s still a chance, in another once upon a time.
Just... I commend all of them so much, Brennan for laying the tracks for the emotional, narrative, and lore beats of the episode and the intrepid heroes for picking up on them and responding to and expanding them like the endlessly talented improvisors they are.
WHAT A GOOD FUCKING EPISODE, CAN’T WAIT FOR EPISODE 5

thinking about the d20 intrepid heroes ahhhh
I hear so much praise for Ally, Lou, and Emily for their play styles and characters and amazingness (and it is absolutely warranted holy cow they're fantastic, I love watching them) but I feel like I never really see that much praise for Murph, Siobhan, and Zac
aka I'm just in a rambly mood so I'm gonna talk to myself on this post
Siobhan is CLEVER and she figures out puzzles just in the way a DM would hope, she blends into and enriches the world that Brennan is creating with everyone seamlessly, she knows where the gaps in the party need to be filled.
Zac is known for being the guy who does simple stuff and keeps quiet except when delivering excellent comedic timing, but I don't think he gets enough credit for just. Being Good At DND. He knows the mechanics, he pulls some awesome stuff with them, he knows how to play the game well! I just started watching Startstruck and this season (so far) really has let his skill shine.
Murph fully delves into his characters mindset (of which he has a CRAZY range hello? Riz to Kug to Theo to Barry to Gerard I mean c'mon they're all SO DISTINCT) and he does it so naturally I forget how much he's going in on his character. Going right between campaigns is an awesome way to highlight just how differently but authentically he plays through his PCs, and it impresses me BECAUSE of how often I forget he's playing a character.
basically I love all the intrepid heroes and they're all so talented

The idea that the characters will rise up and literally kill the author is one that I desperately hate for a few reasons.
1) Authors are not inherently evil. They’re storytellers who are often telling the story they wished to hear or read as children with characters they have put pieces of themselves into. They write the ink which dries but it is for them.
2) If there is a force which demands more suffering or more drama, it’s editors or publishers not authors. I know from personal experience all the stuff that’s hurt my characters has been exacerbated from the first draft because other people have enabled me to do so. My original ideas weren’t as traumatizing as what hits the page.
3) already you guys are forgetting what one of the central themes of this season is. The lack of agency. Pinocchio cannot do anything morally bad or he becomes a puppet, Rosamund is destined to sleep for a hundred years. Ylfa must always be eaten by the wolf, Gerard is always a frog. The horror this season is a lack of agency, even provided by Brennan himself in so much that the PCs choices have had very little bearing on the storyline so far imo. So I think we’ll finally see our characters take their stories into their own hands and drive them off the rails like so many authors like to joke about
And Finally?
4) The Itsy Bitsy Spider. If Brennan’s whole ethos this season was “needless suffering of fairytale characters is bad” then he would’ve had the itsy bitsy spider go into the book. But he doesn’t. And even before Ally shuts the book the spider is wary. Because he knows that he needs the rain for the sun to come again. He doesn’t want it to be all sunny all the time. Because yes suffering sucks, adversity sucks, but you can always overcome it. And if you constantly live in a world where it’s happily ever after all the time, you never grow nor do you appreciate the sunshine when it is all you see.
Anyway it’s not as black and white as other people are making it out to be and no it’s not capitalism.
