That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.

Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."

The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.

And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?

Cattonquick boarding school sweethearts/romeo & Juliet AU

In which Oliver also comes from old money and he and Felix fall in love in boarding school(?). The Quicks and the Cattons have been business partners since Queen Victoria was still kicking so Ollie and Felix have known each other their whole lives (summers and holidays always spent together) but when their family ties are suddenly severed after a hostile fight between their fathers, the boys’ last year at Eton is irrevocably ruined. As a reaction they decide (it was Felix’s idea and he succeeded in cajoling Oliver to agree) to elope run away on the first day of the Christmas holidays (imagine their respective chauffeurs endlessly waiting for them at the school gates lmao) and get married on a whim (also Felix’s idea to somehow "fix" things like ta-da! Can’t separate us now dad, we’re fucking married. Oliver is now a Catton. Family peace restored! No, not really Felix lmao.)

Me here realising that Oliver was born 9 months after Felix. You know, 9 months...as if he had been made and born for Felix. Because he just never existed in a world without Felix...until his 20th birthday.

Ye so.. the other day I was lurking in a stream, n something abt kissing someone's chest was mentioned. n simp brain was like "ok what if Fell- no wait, what if Tac?" and so I had to stop what i was doing to draw this.

Thinking about Farleigh and Oliver. About how Farleigh was the only one who could see through most of Oliver’s tricks because he’s the same kind of animal. They’re both the people pleasers of Saltburn. They’re the only ones who have to put on a show to be allowed to stay. But Oliver doesn’t confide in him for that. Because at his core I think he’s scared of genuine human connection. I think he’s afraid that if he acts like himself, people will leave. He’s always putting on an act, he’s been doing it for as long as he can remember. Because he never wants to disappoint. Maybe if Farleigh woke up while Oliver was making that text, they could’ve had a moment that was real. Farleigh waking to the blueish illumination of a phone screen, asking ‘what are you doing’. Oliver doesn’t have an answer. But Farleigh keeps pressing, until he gets one (or rather assumes one). It’s instant, his reaction. A barrage of ‘what the fuck is wrong with you’ and ‘why do they make Olivers so psychotic in that fucking factory’. But everyone is sleeping, and he has to keep his words hushed to keep it that way. Oliver’s only reply is ‘I don’t know’. It’s frustrating, but eventually Farleigh just turns over and tries to sleep with his phone clutched tightly. It’s too late for this bullshit. Oliver just stares with his eyes wide. Farleigh cracks one of his own open, asking (less angrily after he’s had a chance to cool down) ‘why’. And again, Oliver doesn’t have an answer to give. He’s just ‘I needed to’. And then something something Oliver tells Farleigh about his lack of identity in a moment of sleep deprived weakness and Farleigh sees himself in Oliver’s story yada yada and then they cuddle

Only update I’ll be posting for now is that I met Max early this morning. He was coming down the stairs with his dad and I asked if he can sign my hat, he said yup, signed it then I asked for him to sign a second one, and he said sure, signed it, was so sweet.

As I was shaking and freaking the fuck out after, a marshal who was standing by came over, and he was like “you’re lucky, you know. That doesn’t always happen” and then we had a solid 10 minute convo where he told us about how he’s known Max since Toro Rosso. How he’s one of the nicest guys, got into Red Bull and had a single focus and has since relaxed. How when his dad is around he’s a bit more tense, but that he’s so genuine. He said he doesn’t always talk to people when he’s stopping which is why he said I was lucky.

Feeling blessed on the eve of my 30th birthday.
