Cleric Merlin: [oblivious to Arthur watching him sorting out potions]

Arthur smiles, before it disappears from his lips quickly once Merlin turned around to see him standing in the doorway.

Cleric Merlin: [surprised] Arthur! What are you doing here? Are you injured? [Walks over to the Templar, eyes scanning for any visible wounds]

Templar Arthur: [chuckling, staring fondly at his friend] I'm fine, I just came to inform you that we'll be leaving early tomorrow so best pack what you need now instead of later.

Cleric Merlin: [nodding and smiling] Okay, thank you for telling me.

How much did Helena and Arthur interact before the conclave?

before the conclave, like while arthur was in the circle? a handful of times. the trevelyans visited often at first, but that trickled away over time, and helena was quickest to stop coming. (i imagine their father insisted at first but it was harder to do when their mother started refusing too.) i actually can’t think of a reason she would have met him as a templar because i imagine both she and the order would have insisted on the separation and it’s not like he had freedom of movement. so i decided she came to visit a final time just before she joined the order and despite her having written ahead he was ambiguously “indisposed” (read: knew his sister was coming but, thinking a noblewoman could always come another night, sacrificed it to watch another mage’s back even if it got him a few nights in the dungeons) and she never got to see him. after he found out what she’d been meaning to tell him, he sent a letter that opened with the line “are you that afraid of me, hel?” and she burned it with the rest unread. (or folded it up with deep angry creases unread, so i can bring it back to let him speak from the dead sometime. hmm.)

so they haven’t seen each other since they were still kids basically. early to mid teenage. that’s actually why she wears her hair like she does; it’s how it used to be braided up when she was younger. she wore it that way to the conclave because she had to find him, out of some stupid impulse that he wouldn’t recognise her otherwise. she doesn’t know why she’s kept doing it

the funny thing about the Knights Templar is that Philip IV's witchhunt and persecution of them was so successful that despite being a major part of Europe's infrastructure, they pretty much vanished. this combined with everything he accused them of means they have the weirdest fucking reputation of like great conspiracy-levels of mysterious. most modern Americans know absolutely nothing about them except that they're vaguely associated with inane lizard people conspiracies. then of course the alt-right latched on to this and took it to new heights as if your average Templar wasn't just a bank teller.

anyway the result of this is that none of Arthur's children know anything about the Templars but nonetheless have some weird ideas about them and by extension Solène. meanwhile Arthur, who was honestly somewhat infatuated with Solène because he's still really into the chivalric code and shit, is just mortified and deeply offended that his children would talk such shit in front of him like this.

Merthur AU where Merlin is a medieval peasant who was tried and convicted as a witch in twelfth century England.

And Arthur is the poor sap who found a cool artifact in the woods while hiking and picked it up.

Now Merlin is hardcore haunting him and Arthur is....not having it.

He's exhausted. Merlin hasn't had someone to talk to in ages and not he's commenting on EVERYTHING Arthur does.

Arthur doesn't wanna bring up the dying horribly thing but he can't figure out if Merlin realizes his death is the bedrock of a famous folk tail.
