here's the big question then......if this is a swap AU, and Lu Ten is in Iroh's place, does that mean Iroh died at the Seige of Ba Sing Se 👁️👁️
Tumblr media
Yup, Lu Ten survived, but Iroh died.
After this his son tried his absolute best to be just like him, to be a good fatherly/brotherly figure towards Zuko and Azula.
(I had to crack out my mediocre Chinese skills for this I hope I did okay. I only know a few grammar rules and words so forgive me if the writing makes no sense lmao)

Watching reaction vids to Avatar one thing remains as true now as it was back then: Nobody survives the Tale of Iroh with dry eyes.

You know what proves the creators knew nothing about the ATLA fandom? Cause it’s so easy to understand us, truly, if only they tried.
One of the most popular episodes in the fandom, and one of the highest rated, is - Tales of Ba Sing Se. An episode where absolutely nothing happens to progress the story (except Appa’s footprint at the very last second). That episode is nothing but characters. No plot points, no tension, no fight scenes - nothing! Just our favorite characters going about their day.
While the live action is the opposite of that, it’s all plot and no character. So if you really want to make a good adaptation you should listen to your audience, cause it’s not that hard to figure out what we like.

I love how Azula was “I’m gonna take over Ba Sing Se but I’m gonna do it with culturally accurate clothing”

So I've been watching atla for the first time, and I just watched Tales of Ba Sing Se, and can I just say that I did not expect Uncle Iroh's to end the way it did.
When he started sing Little Soldier Boy to Lu Ten's picture, I started sobbing like a baby. My eyes are wet and my heart hurts.

Lu Ten's letter to Iroh that we see in "Tales of Ba Sing Se" is signed "I will see you again after we win the war, your loyal son."
When Zuko kneels in front of Ozai and refuses to fight him right before being burned and banished, he says "I am your loyal son."
One son speaking of loyalty and fighting a war that he won't come back from, another loyal son refusing to fight and being sent away.
How hard it must have been for Iroh seeing Zuko thinking he had to prove his loyalty to his father by fighting a hopeless war. Iroh saying he wished he could have helped his son, realizing too late that he'd taken Lu Ten's loyalty for granted.

tales of ba sing se is one of my favorite episodes (of television in general tbh), and it’s just proof that sometimes filler episodes are 100% necessary.
let’s stop with these 8 episode shows. they’re too rushed and the pacing is awful 80% of the time anyway. why are we so afraid of filler?? it’s so important for delving into the actual personalities of the characters instead of just seeing how they act when completing some harrowing quest.
i want to see how they react to a girls day or to an awkward first date. give me all the fun superfluous details that we would never see otherwise. i love filler episodes so much!!!

Hehe I have made fanart for the levels fic A Tale of Spirits by @unorthodoxx-page!
Tumblr media
I did take a few liberties on the rise boys designs but I stuck mostly to how I felt they were described (single shots and one without the text under the cut)

A Tale of Spirits last sneak peek!
Yes, I know the sneak peeks are early this week lol.  There’s going to be a lot going on in this chapter, but it’s flowing for me right now.  So here’s the sneak!
Like always, it’s unedited and subject to change.
SNEAK PEEK (Iroh POV)
He moves through the steps with a leisure he hasn’t felt since his family was whole.  This small kitchen almost reminds him of his time at sea with his nephew.  When he would brew Zuko’s favorite on those colder nights and play a relaxing game of pai sho.  He folds the tea leaves gently in a smooth cloth and brings it to sit just below his chin.  Iroh takes a soft sniff and hums in approval at the richness of the aroma.  He moves his hand just over the moving flame in a seemingly useless gesture and frowns.  His fingers twitch against the urge to adjust the heat by a few degrees.  It is not worth the risk.  He moves to the teapot and lets his fingers run along the curve of the ceramic with a light smile.  He dumps the warm liquid and replaces it with fresh boiling water to steep the leaves in.
“I’ve never seen anyone preheat a pot before.”
Iroh chuckles and sets the teapot on the open flame.  “That is one secret to great tea,” he says, “a warm pot ensure that the temperature of the water does not drop too much when steeping.”
A loud snort echoes through the empty shop and Iroh’s smile grows tight.
He’s back again.
The boy sits close to the open kitchen with a dark scowl on his face.  His eyes flicker between Iroh and his fumbling nephew with an unwavering focus.  He hardly moves during these moments, and only the twitch of that perpetual stem between his teeth betrays his fury.
Iroh though he detoured the young man from his nephew when the boat made it to Ba Sing Se.  He recognized the intensity in the boy’s eyes the moment he and Zuko came back from the food raid.  Although young, Jet has the gaze and words of a seasoned general.  He would not stop until Zuko was recruited to his cause, so Iroh acted preemptively.  He called to the man serving tea, made a loud complaint at the beverage being ice-cold, and ensured Jet was watching when he warmed it.  The boys face had pinched in revulsion at the truth of what they were, and that should have been the end of it.
He miscalculated.
Jet’s hatred ran deeper than anything Iroh’s ever encountered.  An immeasurable, festering rage that promises death to all firebenders, no matter how innocent they might be.  He should not be surprised, Iroh himself has probably created children like this during his campaign, but he will not let this child ruin his nephew.
Iroh jumps at the sudden bang of plates.  He turns just as Mikey slams the utensils against the table.  “Are you going to do anything else besides glare at us all day?”
“Why,” Jet spits, “got something to hide?”
“Yes, Uncle’s patented tea process for one,” Mikey snaps.  “Shouldn’t you be working?  It’s like seven in the morning!”
“I am.”
Mikey crosses his arms.  “Stalking doesn’t count, and I know it doesn’t pay the bills!”
