Going very British tonight: putting together some quick chicken tikka masala with Patak's curry paste!
Never been as wild about that one, but it was the curry paste variety that I spotted in a supermarket here. Better variety in the cooking sauces, but I prefer to use the paste actual BIR takeaway style. They usually buy the Patak's pastes by the bucket.
Tonight, the sauce is getting the ever-popular "half a thing of whatever tomato product is open in the fridge", passata this time. Mr. C also bought light cream (here, matlagningsgrädde or "cooking cream") because I forgot to specify. It's all good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On more of a hillbilly fusion note, though, I'm also planning to make some half-assed take on a dry cabbage curry in the Instant Pot, to go with it. We had half a big head of cabbage in the fridge. This is basically just going to be a pressure cooker version of my usual fried cabbage, but with different seasoning. Which is true enough of a lot of actual South Asian versions, probably including the pressure cooking sometimes to speed up the braising part. People there usually have access to a better assortment of spices than I do right at the moment, though thankfully that should be partly remedied after we get the latest Drakfrukt order.

Anyways, here's roughs of Captain Ironside and Young Jack! (As always, ramble below the cut!)
Like I said, these are rough designs for them! Ryan's only on lvl like, 36, and Young Jack is literally an npc I hyperfixated on because his plot is ridiculous. Ryan (Silent Ryan Ironside) is on the right, Young Jack on the left 👍

So, lore ramble as I warned about:
Ryan has the Grizzleheim origin, and her parents were killed in a Mutiny. She's a Swashbuckler, and her First mate is consistently Subodai (horse Warrior). Ryan became a Mute after her parents were killed, and communicates with her crew solely through a complex system of tapping patterns, or simple hand signals. She's slow to trust, and is very loose with dropping people at the first sign of disloyalty, but she picks up her crew like they're each a stray sopping wet kitten. She's still a teen, so when they all joined her, they basically pulled "It takes a village to raise a kid" and the entire Crew works to boost her up as well as keep her safe.
Young Jack recap (w/o bias I hope) I'd that he's the nephew of a guy on the docks of Flotsam who went missing. You find him near the broken lighthouse, he's cursed, you hunt down the dude who made the curse and kill him. Give the head to Young Jack to keep him from getting zombified. Young Jack swears off pirating, and that's the last time he's seen.
Personal Explanation for the art above:
Ryan took the quest would really planning to follow through. She stumbled across Young Jack's trail by chance and found him injured and surrounded by undead. His old crew. She sympathized, and helped him back to his uncle, but Old Scratch and everyone else of Flotsam agreed that the boy was doomed to die of his curse by sundown. Only way was to kill this old immortal famous pirate, so Ryan did just that. She felt like she couldn't just stand down, and she killed the guy and presented it to Young Jack just before sundown.
Jack swore off pirating and retreated with his uncle back home, but I like to think Ryan kept in contact. Jack started work in the tavern, and Ryan made Flotsam her crew's go-to stop just to check in on Jack. They were friends, Ryan's first real friend, and got along swimmingly. Ryan taught him the codes and translations for her taps, and they bonded. (Currently they're still courting. Jack thinks she's just the coolest girl he's ever met, and she thinks Jack is reckless, but sweet.)
One time, I like to think just after Monquista, Ryan went to the tavern, only to get news that Jack had been kidnapped, by pirates, then the Armada. Ryan has a paralyzing fear of the Armada, but snuck away from her crew. She was trading her surrender for Jack's safe return. Ryan managed to send Jack back safe, giving herself up to Deacon in the process.
Jack, in my headcanon, has a giant slash scar across his face because of this incident. When he got back and tried to tell Ryan's crew what had happened, Subodai was furious. Subodai is basically Ryan's mentor and adoptive father, so when he heard what had happened his was in such great distress he didn't even think. He drew his sword and slashed Jack across the face without a second thought, before the crew could stop him.
Everyone ended up bannmding together to vet Ryan back in one piece, but that incident is what I think drove Jack to join Ryan's crew. If he remained away from her, he'd only be a dangerous outlier for enemies to use against her. Staying close let both of them be safer, and happier, despite how he swore off pirating not long ago.
Obviously Jack doesn't fight, he's not an npc I can pick up and take with me, so I like to think he's just kinda the housewife here. He keeps the ship and crew in order when Ryan's going onto land for extended periods of time. He also probably keeps track of Ryan's debts, favors owed, and things of that nature. Besides that though, they're just really close, and it's good that Ryan bonded with someone outside her crew for once, even if he ended up in the Crew in the end.

Vox's Definitive Ranking on Dress Shoes!
This is going under a read-more because there's So Many of them.
Note, I am not making a distinction between Oxfords, Brogues, and Derby shoes, they're slight variants on what is otherwise the same theme.
Classic Lace-Up Oxfords
Whole cut Oxfords: 2/10
They're not the worst. He needs that to be said, they're a perfectly... serviceable shoe. They're just hideous. The lack of tongue, the lack of decorations. Unforgiveable.
Plain toe Oxfords: 4/10
Immediately worlds better. Still not perfect, but he would get those over the whole cut any day.
Cap-toe Oxfords: 5.5/10
They're better than the others... unfortunately he doesn't like the cap toe. They're just a straight line, no. It looks like you ran out of shoe and had to make due.
Wing-tip Oxfords (one colour): 9/10
A pinnacle of shoe design. No notes, the perforations, the shape in the embellishments, he's got multiple in his closet, they're his go to shoe design.
Wing-tip Oxfords (duo/two-tone): 10/10.
there's a ton of slight variants in where the colour can go, and he loves them all. They're what he wore the most of in life, though they've gone out of style since. While he doesn't wear the two-tone ones as much anymore, he still has several pairs in his closet.
Slip On Loafers
Penny loafers: 6/10
They're fine? Depending on the look they work. He likes the slight decoration on them.
Bit loafers: 7/10
Better than the penny loafers. He's seen ones with more variant in material choices, that makes them more interestingly duo-tone and those would score higher, closer to a 7.5 or an 8.
Tassle loafer: 3/10
No, just no. Get them away from him, cut them off.
Kiltie loafers: 2/10
They're even worse than the previous. Even the two tone variants cannot save these. They're like an old man made his slippers into his day wear. Burn them with fire.
Black Tie
Opera pump: 3.5/10
They're there? There's not enough to be offended by, but it sure comes close some days. Has no notes only because he can't think of how to fix it.
Ribbon opera pumps: 2/10
You'd think this is better than the other variants but NOPE!!! You will never catch him in these. He doesn't care that they seem more feminine, he just hates them. He doesn't care its supposedly a staple.
He's not reranking the Oxfords. If he needs a black tie shoe its those.
Boots
Chelsea: 1/10
He's opposed to their classification as a dress shoe at all. Which honestly is his problem with most of this category. He wants to go to a business meeting not on a hiking trip, or hipster cafe.
Chukka boots: 4/10
They're on thin ice. They almost get to count. Some of them are better than others, but he can't see why you'd ever go for these and not any of the much better options.
Cap-toe boots: 5/10
A pass! These are clearly formal wear... he still think you should just get a normal shoe, and he still doesn't like the cap toe style but they're acceptable. He doesn't own any, but he might not mock you if you do.
Wing-tip boots: 6/10
The closest a boot is getting to winning him over. They're good for shorter pants, for longer ones. He probably owns a pair, they're good for dealing with Alastor. But even his beloved wingtips aren't enough to fully get him on board.
Monk boots: 1/10
He's a business man not a caricature of a witch. Oh you want him to get on a broom and cackle? No, fuck you, and fuck these shoes too.
Monk Straps
Single: 5/10
He's seen jazzed up versions that tend towards duo-tone and more jazzed up wingtips and those are better.
Double: 3/10
Usually he's all for adding more decoration to shoes but these do it badly. The gap between the buckles, the shape, no. It takes an already ish shoe and makes it bad.
Tripple strap: 5/10
Fixes his problem with the two-strap variant, but not enough to net it more than a pass. Just go for a laced version, we're all adults here, you don't need the patent leather version of a velcro shoe.

Aha, I'm less in the know than you think!! But I can assure you there IS a new trigun, trigun stampede, a reboot which seems to have different takes on some of the characters and themes!! I've not seen it yet and don't plan to for a while (I'm trying very hard to be kind to my brain and at least let the og settle in my head as I read the manga), but what I've heard sounds super cool!!
#in honesty i find the art style a little offputting (it's 3d and i'm sure i'd get used to it given the chance#but rn it feels like looking at a video game)#and i've heard mixed reviews on the character portrayals-- mainly that everyone seems younger and ww is edgier?#my main problem is they REMOVED MILLY#and replaced her with SOME GUY#WHAT COULD POSSIBLY JUSTIFY THAT. “prompt” #7: I gave myself an hour before bed to write and this is what happened
March 2024
Maya is harried, to say the least.
She rushes from one end of the apartment to the other, muttering to herself as she stacks things on the kitchen table, laying them out and then rearranging them moments later.
Carina watches from a safe distance, settled on the living room floor with Andrea in her lap. He’s entranced by the frantic movements of his mommy, his little feet bouncing as she disappears and reappears over and over.
After about the sixth time of her walking past without acknowledging him, though, he finally squawks his disapproval.
Maya stills immediately, turning on her heels to flash him a wide, albeit anxious-looking, grin. “Hi, bubba,” she coos, strolling across the room to scoop him into her arms. He squeals with delight, hands flapping before they settle on her chest, grabbing hold of her t-shirt.
She smacks a kiss against his cheek and moves like she intends to set him down. In an instant, his bottom lip begins to quiver; big, crocodile tears welling in his eyes and spilling down his face.
“The baby has spoken,” Carina says triumphantly, point a finger at her wife when those worried blue eyes flick her way, “Sit down.”
“Carina,” Maya whines, “There’s so much to do!”
“No,” Carina argues, shaking her head as she rises from the floor to guide Maya towards the couch. “You have been running around like a sightless turkey -”
“Headless chicken,” Maya corrects.
“- but now you are going to sit and hold your son.” She pushes Maya down onto the couch cushions, quickly dropping down beside her to curl into her side.
Maya purses her lips together, pouting slightly. Her fingers still wander into Andrea’s curls, stroking the back of his head when he turns to look at his mama. “His party is tomorrow,” Maya reiterates, the tension she’s feeling about that fact evident in the hold she has on every muscle in her body. “And we don’t have everything ready.”
Carina blows out a breath, smiling when the sound makes Andrea grin at her. The tears have already been forgotten, cast aside in favour of this undivided attention. “It will be fine, bambina,” Carina soothes, one of her hands beginning to work at the tight muscles in Maya’s neck, “There will be food and friends and whatever we’ve missed... who cares?”
That warrants a huff of exasperation, though, Maya’s shoulders hitching upwards like she’s about to bolt. Carina grabs onto her, pinning her to the couch. “It’s his first birthday, Carina,” Maya whines, “His first ever.”
“Ba, ba, ba,” Andrea babbles, clapping his hands together.
“That’s right,” Carina nods, mimicking his movement with her own hands. He smiles, waving at the air between them excitedly. “It’s your first birthday, right Andrea?”
“Ba, ba, ba,” he repeats.
“And you won’t remember any of it,” Carina nods, her eyebrow arching knowingly as she turns her gaze on Maya. “Bambina, you are making yourself crazy. For what?”
“His first birthday party,” Maya echoes, clearly believing it’s the most obvious answer in the world. Her grasp on Andrea tightens, his little body forced closer to her chest. He frowns, twisting in an attempt to get away from the snuggles. “It’s important, Carina.”
“Si, si,” Carina agrees, loosening Maya’s hold on their son. “To you. He only cares that you are there.” As if to prove her point, Andrea yells, his big, crocodile tears making a reappearance. He pushes at Carina’s hands, leaning back into Maya with displeasure at the very idea of being taken from his mommy’s lap.
It’s enough to make Maya start to relax. She settles her chin atop their son’s head, his dark, baby-soft curls brushing at her cheek as she nuzzles in, breathing in the warm, familiar scent of his skin. “Okay,” she sighs, “You’re right.”
Carina chuckles, shifting closer to kiss the curve of Maya’s jaw. Andrea reaches for her mouth as she does so, smacking the palm of his hand against her lips. She kisses there, too, smiling when he hums happily in response. “That was on Mommy’s clipboard,” Carina murmurs to him, “‘Tell Mama she’s right’: check.”
Maya laughs, loud and unrestrained for the first time all day.

If Robin ever found a copy of Frakenstein, he'd be baying for Victor Frankenstein's blood very quickly. (Grima's basically a Dragon version of Frankenstein.)
Oh for sure, the Frankenstein parallels are right there, right down to unreliable narrator. Though I wonder if Robin would really write off Victor completely, or if perhaps he would understand *some* parts of his perspective...
