Summary:

Yamaguchi Tadashi plants his hands on his knees and fixes his eyes firmly on the title sequence in front of him. Usually, he falls asleep during movie nights; his parents never let him stay up as late as he’s allowed to at the Tsukishimas’, so his body isn’t co-operative, no matter how much fun he’s having. Not tonight, though. This is Kei’s favourite movie. Tadashi isn’t going to miss a second of it.

Three times Tsukishima and Yamaguchi watch Kei’s comfort movie franchise, though middle school, high school, and college.

Tonight, the night before the second training camp, Tadashi is sleeping over. While Kei sits with his laptop, dreading being flattened all over again - for six days straight, this time, instead of just two - Tadashi is buzzing. He paces the room as he chatters, half to himself, and draws out the shapes of the new attacks with his hands as if he can see Coach Ukai’s diagrams in the air. As if he’s going to be in the matches for more than a few seconds. As if the practice matches matter at all.

His palms smart, recalling the slap of countless blocks; his head pounds as if it’s stored up all the heat from the past week and locked it away, building a miniature sun in the space where his brain ought to be. The skin of his shoulders and neckline feels clammy and hot - burned, no doubt, and still mockingly oily with residual sunblock.

He remembers Tadashi.

Chapter summary:

“Tsu-kki…” Tadashi calls, from where he’s laying upside down on Kei’s futon. “You’re so slow.”

He’s holding Ichika (a green brontosaurus) up above his head, facing her towards Kei and bobbing her up and down like she’s talking. Kei rolls his eyes as he finishes pulling on his sweater, tugging the sleeves down so they cover as much of his wrists as possible. All his clothes are getting too small; he’s going to hit 175cm soon. From the way Tadashi talks, you’d think he was already at 2 metres.

(Kei and Tadashi have a Christmas movie-night sleepover, eat too much chocolate, and try to keep warm.)
