👀 Do you have any WIPs that you would never let see the light of day? If yes, what are they about?
How dare you ask me that. Yes. Sometimes I am compelled to write little scenes just to get it out of my head but they're NOT to be posted (theyre often smuts lmfao). There's also absolute stacks of World of Warcraft fanfiction i hand-wrote on note pages as a teenager that I will never type up simply because they're both too cringy and too precious for me to share around these days.
💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done?
I'm already interested in mycology anyway but Good Impressions is requiring a lot of research into things like mycorrhyzal networks which I already knew a little about but I'm currently trying to work a few things out (which i suspect are like, specialist subjects Actual Mycologists are trying to find out). I've also had to research a lot about space suits, astronaut psychology, space travel history and technology, etc. Even though I make a lot up, having the supports to bullshit on is...Important.
💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?
About my own work? Isn't that just canon? I'm trying to work out what this question is asking - does it mean something I never wrote in it but I know exists anyway?
I guess for the Detective AU I still have yet to write a lot of things in, but theres small details i didn't bother to mention like:
-Sylvie and Loki often chat on the phone, but because Sylvie has to use burner phones to keep her location hidden Loki has to often wait for Sylvie to call him first - sometimes this means he misses her call and has to wait like a week until she tries again.
-I don't know if I ever wrote this one in? Mobius has bad knees because he was pushed out of a second story window and tried to land on his feet.
-The puppy that followed Loki home was called Fenrir. It chewed through its leash and ran away.

What Is There To Celebrate About the Darkling? (Part 4)

He’s calculating but impulsive. Gentle yet firm. Stubborn and adaptive. Just a real mess of contradictions that makes him all the more interesting.
He loves nature. He loves the forest.
Fond of luxuries and nice things. After growing up as he did, I think he deserves them.
Very socially awkward. Introvert just trying his best. Anything that isn’t manipulation and therefore something he’s planned in his head is just a social train wreck waiting to happen.
The way he pushes up Alina’s sleeve when they first meet. This man had zero compunctions about acting completely unprofessionally in front of his soldiers and I think that’s very sexy of him.
He’s constantly tired and exasperated with the people around him.
The way he says “quiet” with the softest voice imaginable and a room full of laughter instantly goes silent.
He had no interest in Elizaveta even though she was utterly obsessed with him and I think that’s hilarious.
Elizaveta: I have a plan to resurrect the Darkling
Everybody Else: Oh the Darkling is so evil for trying to come back!
The Darkling, who just wants a nap and is sick of this mortal bullshit: Why am I even here? This is such a pain in the ass. I should have killed Elizaveta when I had the chance.
How he asks if Alina “will have” his name like a man proposing.
Has his bedroom attached to the war room.
Constantly checking up on Alina just to know how she’s doing. Never pushing her beyond her limits as she’s training.
Very creative with his shadows and the extent of their abilities. So many of the ways he uses his powers are genius.
His ending in RoW is a tragedy and an injustice. He deserves better.
This old man pouting at Alina in episode seven as he says “please, I just want to talk to you 🥺”
There is a black kefta made for Alina after like two days in the Little Palace. He really was already planning their entire immortal futures together as Mr. and Mrs. Starkov wasn’t he?
His bed is covered in maps and notes when he’s plotting how to find Alina. Also before that, the way he’s poring over the notes at his desk and giving orders is 👌🥵
Him acting like a real General at all is simply amazing.
The fact that he trusts Luda with his life. That they have a whole intimidation routine set up around him purposefully getting himself fatally injured knowing she’ll heal him.
He looks like a vampire in the show and a fae in the books.
His favorite ABBA song is probably “Lay All Your Love On Me.”
Looks composed but that’s only a façade. Is actually an unhinged feral terror of pain and misery.
That scene where he tells the king she will remain in the Little Palace to train undisturbed and he puts his foot down. ON THE RED CARPET. the king’s carpet. and uses a commanding voice that’s just on the edge of an order…I’m surprised he didn’t get flogged for that. IMO nothing conveys the fine line he walks with those in power while wielding his own like this scene. Literally he should just be celebrated for this alone.
“‘Why won’t you leave me alone?’ I whispered one night as he hovered behind me while I tried to work at my desk.
Long minutes passed. I didn’t think he would answer. I even had time to hope he might have gone, until I felt his hand on my shoulder.
“Then I’d be alone, too,” he said, and he stayed the whole night through, till the lamps burned down to nothing.
Trapped a bunch of Saints in the Shadow Fold like a true amoral disaster villain. What an icon.
His barely concealed amusement and half hidden smile when Alina comes to put his kefta on. The way he finds Alina utterly hilarious and tries so hard to act like he doesn’t.
That small amused smile when Alina jokes about finding Volcra hilarious. Please he’s so adorable 😭

Mal and the Darkling’s entire fight in the Fold: dumbass on dumbass violence.
The way he stands with his back turned to Alina when she enters his tent the first time they meet and then does the slowest Godfather turn in history. 1999/10 - points removed for a criminal lack of cat petting.
“I may lead the second army, but the king is still the king.” - the delivery of that line. the implications, the history behind it and also the foreshadowing for his plans.
That slow turn face reveal in episode one though. Like okay we get it you’re pretty alkjsdflkj
Confused Old Man Face™ whenever Mal or Alina do anything remotely defiant in his presence.
How he tells Alina to come closer and she only takes the tiniest step and he doesn’t even react.
His little head cock whenever someone says or does something that just doesn’t vibe with him.
Darklina tumblr has now convinced me that the Darkling is a cat in human form.

He glanced at where Sylvi was pouncing on another helpless tree, oblivious, and gave a single, frightened nod. How could he have been so stupid? He would have to tell his mother now, and she would insist that they leave right away. If word got out, they’d both be in danger. Amplifiers were rare, hard to find, harder to hunt. Their lives would be forfeit. Even if they got away, word would spread. He could already hear his mother’s voice: Foolish, careless, callous. If you don’t value your own life, show some concern for mine.
Annika touched his sleeve. “It’s okay,” she said. “I won’t tell.”

His smile when he’s summoning the sun. The expression on his face when he does so. Like I know I’ve mentioned this before but damn. If you ever needed a reason to celebrate him, this would be it.

The way he flips Mal over his shoulder in the Fold after Mal attempts to strangle him.
His little lecture on the Small Science to Alina when they’re going to meet the King. Info dump.

When Alina looks at him for guidance on whether or not to remove her veil and he gives her a small nod.
The handhold in the throne room after Alina’s demonstration is absolutely precious, but it’s in a room full of people he should be keeping up a façade for and it’s so unwarranted and yet he does it anyway, I’m-
The way he says “welcome home, Ms. Starkov,” in the most tender voice I’ve ever heard and then goes “ok that’s enough emotions for one day” and then just straight up leaves without even a goodbye.
He has his symbol?? Sewn into Alina’s kefta??? bRo???!?!
Disaster Simp never gets tired of introducing Alina to other people or talking about how she’s the best thing that ever walked this earth.

That scene in the war room when Alina comes to find him and he instantly drops his guard and lowers his arms and welcomes her with a soft voice.
“Am I bothering you?” “Not at all.” - girl you could be stabbing him in the chest and you still wouldn’t be bothering him.
This whipped disaster sounds like the proudest man on the planet when he talks about how much more his enemies fear Alina over him.
His shadows react to his emotions.
“YoUr’E nOt IvAn.” asjlkdfjs god he’s so embarrassing.
Local Dark Lord Sasha offering Alina the throne after she literally tries to kill him.
He gets so jealous of Mal.
Has a great relationship with his soldiers and his men. His men trust him implicitly and believe him to be an amazing general.
When he turns around after Alina puts the kefta on him and looks flustered/has to take a breath because she’s a lot closer than he expected. The way he’s breathless and literally can’t string a sentence together because he’s so distracted by her closeness.
His jokes are absolutely terrible.
GF: *jokes about throwing herself down the stairs to get out of an event*
Sasha “no thoughts head empty only Alina” Morozova: haha I’d just have my healers heal you right back up again.
How genuinely touched he is by Alina admitting to wanting to help Grisha and Ravkans.
That scene in Demon in the Woods when he notices the intricate details of the politics in the Grisha camp after one meeting with the Elders. He has the Ulle pegged almost instantly.

The way he cups his hands around Alina’s face when they’re kissing.
This man gets so starstruck by Alina walking into the Fete that he doesn’t even excuse himself from the King’s side to go to her.
Long haired Aleksander rights!
Ok I know the wig was kind of ugly but he looks pretty with long hair and I think it would look very good on him naturally.
The way he slams his hands together in the Winter Fete scene and instantly turns the room pitch black.
Literally any times he summons shadows is a blessing and we should all celebrate him for it. They are so beautiful. On god if I ever saw his shadows in real life I would be awestruck.
He asks Mal if he’s okay when they first meet.
The pure, barely contained fury directed at the Conductor for daring to harm Alina and kidnap his Grisha.
He always has to make a grand entrance.
This man is like a bloodhound when it comes to Nina. He is very invested in finding her and I feel like that’s never really talked about.
“I know exactly how she felt. The King’s soldiers treated me the same way. Because they knew- they knew that I was more important than any of them.” - the way he says it, like it’s something he has to remind himself of in his head constantly. a justification for the way he’s been treated, the fear he evokes in others. a way to protect himself from the hurt of being ostracized and reviled. arrogance and conceit as a defense against emotional harm.
Also the way his face instantly changes after that, like he’s said too much. vulnerability. lowering his eyes. shifting his eyes. literally just everything about this scene makes me love him all the more.
Dark carriage rides up to the Crows’ hiding place. Grisha circle the area as Aleksander steps from the carriage slowly, dressed all in black, floofy cloak high on his shoulders. Villain Entrance™
Him slowly pulling a knife out of his chest like it shouldn’t have killed him is hot as fuck and also totally badass. Big dick energy.
“I’ve had enough of your lies.” “And what lies are those?” - Alina, pulling out a fifty mile long scroll of grievances: Well, for starters-
This man is literally just an Alina Starkov compliments machine.
He cares so much about the Grisha and their protection. He loves Ravka and his people so much.
He had an entire cult dedicated to him.

You don’t want to part ways with Rusty but his town isn’t the safety you’re looking for. Its prime real estate for looters and practically every house is filled with the dead, not to mention the ones wandering the streets. It would take the three of you months if not years to set something up and even then all it would take is another Negan to come along and destroy it all in a matter of hours.
“Are you sure you won’t come?” Simon asks for what must be the hundredth time.
“When I’m ready,” Rusty replies, holding his arms out to you and embracing you in a tight goodbye squeeze.
“You take care of that little one and I’ll see you when I see you.”
He reaches for Simon’s hand, shaking it firmly but Simon pulls him into an embrace. “Soon,” he practically orders and Rusty smiles sadly before turning to head back into the house.
“I hate this,” you say, stuffing the car with the last of your belongings. It's only been a few weeks but a few weeks can feel like a lifetime of knowing someone.
“I do too but we haven’t got a choice,” Simon opens the car door and you get in with a sigh.
Rusty wanted time alone in the place that had been his home for so many years and you could appreciate that even if you feared what might happen to him.
When Simon puts the car key in the ignition you both look at each other, silently waiting to see if one of you has changed your mind about leaving. But Rusty isn’t your responsibility, Sylvie is.
“This sucks ass but we need to think about our family,” Simon decides, pulling from the drive and you rest your hand on his thigh, squeezing it reassuringly.
“I just hope we can find this cabin,” you say, smiling.
“I can’t believe you’re doubting me now,” he replies cheerfully and you’re both forcing it but smiling makes you feel a little better. Besides, the sun is shining and being on the road again feels rejuvenating.
You want to be somewhere you can put down some roots and start making your own home. Rusty has told you about just the place. A little middle of nowhere hunting cabin which has been in his family for generations. Given the situation with the roads you don’t know how long it’s going to take to get there but in the end it only takes two days.
What comes next is the hike and you’d be lying if you said you were looking forward to it. But you want to make the best of things and at first it’s nice. You watch Simon’s ass as he leads the way and can’t help but remember the unbearably hot day when you’d followed Simon through the woods before diving into a pool of water and… well… making Sylvie.
The only difference is the baby carrier he has snuggled against his chest and every time he turns to check you’re still with him or to stop and look at the map your breath catches at the sight of him and that tiny precious bundle of pink.
What is it about a six foot hulk of man holding a baby that turns you to mush? With a dreamy sigh the answer is… everything.
But now, hours later, you’re the one holding the baby and she’s feeling like a lead weight as you trudge along. Suddenly nothing seems dreamy or cute.
“Give me the map!” you snap, huffing with exhaustion. You’d set out at dawn hoping to make it to safety before nightfall but you should have been there by now and everything is aching.
“How about I carry her for a while,” Simon soothes, stuffing the map into your hand as he takes Sylvie from the carrier.
“I think we took a wrong turning back at that rock, we need to head more this way,” you say, gesturing but Simon isn’t even paying attention to you. He’s holding Sylvie which means his brain has turned to mush while she basks in his affection like a cub in the sunshine.
“Simon!” you say, losing what's left of your patience.
“I don’t think we did take a wrong turn, mama bear,” he replies, talking in his sing-song baby voice, his eyes never leaving Sylvie as he tries to make her smile even if all her smiles are pretty much wind or pure luck.
“You’re not even looking at the map!” you say tartly.
Simon looks at you, raising one eyebrow, “don’t need to.”
“Oh really? How stupid of me to forget you’re a man and you don’t need to look at a map. You’re just gonna use your penis as a compass to-”
Meanwhile Simon’s hand is on your shoulder, guiding you until you’re seeing what he’s seeing. A cabin, no more 30 feet away and instantly you feel three things. Stupid, relieved and just a tiny bit sorry.
Your cheeks heat but you don’t let him know that. “I guess we’ve found it then,” you say, shoulders straightening as you march forward. If it hadn’t been for Simon you would have walked right past the cabin but you’re not going to admit that either.
The original part is built from stone but there’s an extension made from wood and a deep porch just like Rusty had described. It’s prettier than you’d thought when he’d first mentioned a hunting cabin. You’d imagined bear traps and pelts but thankfully all of that was contained to a little outbuilding around the back.
According to Rusty his wife had forced him to spruce up the place if he ever expected her to spend any time there with him and even though she never came to the cabin more than a handful of times in 40 years of marriage he’d been the dutiful husband.
You smile, thinking Simon would do exactly the same thing for you and suddenly you’re feeling a little bit guilty about losing your cool, “I’m sorry about before. I was just-”
“It's forgotten,” he says softly, placing Sylvie in your arms. “You wait here while I give this place a quick once over.”
It doesn’t take more than a minute before he’s ushering you inside. Afterall, there are only two rooms and one walk-in pantry slash boot room. The original stone part of the cabin is the living room and kitchen while the newer part contains one long bedroom with a king size bed squeezed into one end and a set of bunk beds on the other.
“It’s practically a goddamn mansion,” Simon jokes when you’ve completed the grand tour, his arms spreading out wide enough to dwarf the sitting area.
“We’ll take it!” you say, brushing a fingerful of dust off the fireplace. It might not be the 3 bed, 2.5 bath place you’d had in another life but it was cosy and a perfect hideaway from the rest of the world. Still, you’re under no illusions about the amount of work it’s gonna take to make a life here but you’re ready for it and so is Simon.
You spend the rest of the day exploring the area around your new home and checking to see what supplies are in the cabin before settling Sylvie down for the night in the comfort of an empty dresser drawer. Eventually Simon will make the trek back down to where you left your car and pick up the travel cot you’d brought with you but for now it would do.
When she’s sleeping you find Simon standing by the porch, admiring the stars and no doubt enjoying the peacefulness of having found somewhere to settle. It feels good, it feels right and as he turns to you with an armful of split timber and a smile, you say, “let’s get married.”
“Now?” Simon laughs, probably thinking you’re not being serious.
“Now,” you agree, stepping closer to him and encouraging his armful of timber to the floor. “I mean, I know we’re not gonna have a wedding or anything and honestly the idea of standing here exchanging vows is kinda corny and enough to make me gag-”
Simon’s snort of laughter interrupts you and you smack your hand against his chest. “You know, this isn’t easy for me.”
He wraps his arms around you, “I know, I just can’t believe you’re asking me to marry you and being so damn romantic about it too.”
You narrow your eyes, trying to be mad at him, trying to shake yourself free from his embrace, “you know what? I’ve changed my mind.”
He only holds you closer, “well I haven’t and I think what you’re trying to say is that nothing else matters. Just me, you and Sylvie. That you love me and I love you and vows are nothing but words compared to that. But even so, I will love, honor and obey the hell out of you until the day I die. There’s no question about it. I want you to be my wife.”
He’s right. Your only witnesses are the stars in the sky and the way Simon’s eyes melt into yours. They’re all you need. White dresses, champagne, a hundred guests, none of them make a marriage and none of them really matter when you’re standing with a man who you know will not only kill for you, but die for you too.
Opening your heart never came easy before the world ended so you can’t expect it to now. And maybe saying vows is the cheesiest thing you’ve ever done but Simon’s worth it. You take a breath, sinking into the way he’s holding you. “I didn’t think I’d ever fall in love again. I wanted to hate you rather than admit the truth because I thought that would be easier. It wasn’t. There’s nothing easier than loving you Simon. And if we have to make a vow then I want us to promise that no matter what happens we won’t ever give up.”
“I promise,” Simon replies, his voice a husky whisper before he presses his lips against yours, sealing your promises with a kiss.
Your long journey hasn’t really afforded much time for intimacy and you want more than a single kiss to seal your fates together, you need to feel the weight of him on top of you and the length of him inside. Simon seems to need it too and together you tumble onto the porch seat, excited hands pulling off clothes before you finally give into comfort and grab a quilt from inside the house.
You spread it across the porch while Simon kicks off his boots and slowly unbuckles his belt. Making love under the canopy of stars feels like the perfect way to consummate your marriage and when he enters you for the first time in a long time you flinch, expecting pain but instead feeling nothing but pleasure.
“I love you,” you whisper, stroking your fingers along his spine and urging your hips to meet his every thrust.
The end result doesn’t seem to matter as much as the closeness you feel, wrapped in his arms, his body covering yours. Outside of your cabin the whole world is ticking by but on your porch it's like time has stood still to let you enjoy this moment together.
When you climax, it washes over you in one long toe curling wave of bliss and Simon’s finish isn’t too far behind, his release spilling onto your inner thigh.
“I didn’t think you’d want any more little surprises,” he says, after a while and you couldn’t agree more. You were happy with just the three of you and if any surprises happened to come along then you’d adjust but any extra family members would be just that, surprises, unexpected knocks of fate.
“I have a confession to make…” he says after you’ve been lying curled up together for a while.
You roll onto your side, watching him, waiting.
“You know that day, when…” he inclines his head to the side, “you know…”
“When what?”
“When I walked in to find you…”
Memories flood back, your cheeks filling pink even if you hadn’t felt particularly embarrassed at the time, “masturbating,” you say.
He clears his throat, you can tell he’s changing his mind about what he’s about to say next but he pushes it out anyway. “I didn’t have any reason to go into your room. There was no message from Negan. The truth is I stopped to tie my bootlace and I heard you. You sounded so goddamn sexy and I already wanted you, I’d fantasized about you so hard I thought my dick might fall off. I couldn’t help myself, I was standing in your room before I’d even thought things through properly.”
You sit up, your mouth hanging open, “you great big pervert.”
“I know,” he shrugs, smiling sheepishly, “I’m not gonna lie, seeing you spread across your bed was better than my wildest fantasies but I’ve felt guilty about it ever since.”
You think about the time you’d walked into his room to find him wearing nothing but tented boxer shorts and a smile. When it comes to Simon you know exactly what it feels like to give into your baser instincts. Still a wicked grin peels across your lips, you’re not gonna let him live this down, “I’m married to an animal!”
“So you still wanna be married to me then?” he says, pulling you onto his lap and nuzzling his lips into your shoulder.
The truth is Simon walking in that day was the most erotic moments of your life and even if it was an unusual start you were glad it happened and you were glad to be here with Simon now. Still, it wouldn’t be right if you didn’t make him suffer just a little.
“I’ll think about it,” you say, reaching for your shirt but he stops you, pulling you onto his lap.
“Maybe I can help you come to a decision,” he croons, the warmth of his hands splaying across your back as he nuzzles his lips into your neck. You love the way his mustache tickles your skin when he kisses you there and you can’t help but melt against him.
But you’re not alone in this cabin and for the first time, and surely not the last time, sex is interrupted by the baby. Her little cry pierces the night air and you both laugh softly.
“I’ll get her,” he insists but you go with him anyway, pulling on one of Simon’s shirts before all three of you settle into the king size bed.
It’s cosy and warm and you rest your head on the pillow, admiring the way Simon looks when he’s cradling Sylvie. Soon you’re sleeping soundly and that’s how you spend the first night in your new home. With Simon keeping watch over his girls, savouring the night so he can carry this moment with him for the rest of his life. It was strange to think if he hadn’t walked into your room that day then everything would have been different.

The online article ‘What is Installation Art? Take a Look at the Top Installation Artists Working Today’ will be a useful source to my thesis as it gives examples of the the selected list of installation art works of the last few years.
The article starts with a brief introduction what installation art is. Then proceeds with a concise list of the characteristics that it has in general. For example, that installation art tends to be immersive, large in scale and site specific. It gives also a brief history of it, and describes the few influential and relevant movements like Dada, Conceptualism and performance art. The rest of the article introduces the selected art works from 2013 to 2016.
While introducing selected art works, the authors describe the artwork, for example in the case where they explains the installation work Blood swept lands and seas of red(2014) by Paul cummins as the following sentence “Surrounding the Tower of London were 888,246 handmade poppies…”(My Modern Met Team, 2017). They continue to interpret the work as “…each representing a British and Commonwealth person who died during World War One.”(My Modern Met Team, 2017). Also, by explaining which socially and politically significant dates(“The first poppy was planted on August 5th, the first day of Britain's full participation in the war, and the last poppy was planted on Armistice Day, November 11th.”(My Modern Met Team, 2017)) the first and the last poppy were planted, they used Analysis and Theory in art criticism to further explain the artwork. The authors are not interpreting nor evaluating the artworks in depth from their point of view, but give a more objective and simple description with a general interpretation of art works.

In Deconstructing Installation Art, the author Graham Coulter-Smith is related to my thesis in a way that it deconstructs the idea behind installation art by talking about the role of the viewer, what materials are used and why based on social and psychological way, how other critics see it and how the point of view of installation art is changing.
The author talks in depth about the immersive characteristic that installation art carries by using terms as ‘Disembodied art’ or ‘Embodied art’. ’Disembodied art’ is art for the spectators and ‘embodied art’ is art for the engagers and the latter is explained as installation art. by using mainly Claire Bishops book Installation Art (2005) for its major resource for quotes, he develops her idea in details or refutes it. Also he compares and contrasts the fine art installation and the new media art, and concludes by explaining how the gap between is becoming narrower and that the artists will have to readjust their stance on new media art and see as competition in a way and how the new artistic dimension is emerging and expanding in this new era.
The E-book Deconstructing Installation Art the authors uses psychological theories like Hume (1711-1776)’s concept of ‘the association of ideas’ to explain the background of how mind works when the audience appreciates art. This would be using the Theory step of art criticism. Also, as mentioned he quotes other experts’ ideas and criticism abundantly which is also the step of Theory. When giving an example of a certain art work, mainly he starts with the step of Theory as well. For example, he writes about I Shop Therefore I Am Not (1990), first starting to compare her with other artists and say “The Swiss artist Sylvie Fleury is of interest here because, like Breitz, she shifts away from the ideological critique of mass media that characterises key artists of the 1980s such as Kruger, Haacke and Victor Burgin. Instead, Fleury creates a productive interface between ‘market identity’ and artistic identity.” (Graham, C.S. 2006). He also interprets her work in general by writing “She portrays female identity in the wake of the achievements of the women’s movement when the social script has been rewritten, and women can go shopping and be successful artists—or even go shopping in order to be successful artists.” (Graham, C.S. 2006).
“Also, it will be argued here that video is actually more immersive than most instances of sculptural installation art. The reason for this lies in the phenomena of the suspension of disbelief and the integration of the visual field with bodily and spatial awareness.” (Graham, C.S. 2006)

YEAR IN PHOTOGRAPHS 2016
I’m not going to lie to you, it keeps getting better and better, life that is. Maybe thats because I’m trying to suck up as much as I can all the time. Why watch it go bye, but instead live it, be in it, take it, crush it, grab it, repeat.
I’m trying to relax. It’s honestly hard, especially when you’ve been programmed to work work work, never a dull moment, can’t sit still. If I’m not doing my day job working on movies, I’m with my lovely girls, I’m reading about photography, shooting, editing, shopping, eating, studying, upping my game, trying to swallow up everything I can while I can. Why not, right?!?!
To say it’s been a year is an understatement. I’m blessed, blessed on belief to have such a wonderful wife, kids, the JAY OHH BEE, home. It’s like the world opened itself up to us and said come on in, make a mess of things, spray paint, laugh, cry, relax, go, go, go, etc etc etc. Incredible on all fronts to have arrived at the end of 2016 with smiles, left nothing on the field, no stone unturned, no page unread, checked all the boxes, and then some.
I think the year shows, especially in these photographs. The places we went, the things we saw, people we met, experiences we banked, the highs the lows and everything in between. Milestones, journeys, down time, working, family, friends, traveling and more.
To my girls, keep on keeping on. I will take you there, you can ride with me any day and I hope I can with you too. Love you with all my heart. To my wife, boy am I lucky. My muse. My love. My Amanda.

From below there is this beautiful park at the basin of a hill. When you look up, the people hiking the hill look like ants. So we decided to go for it and upon summiting, we came across this beautiful tree, weathered and old, recouping from the winter sun, with very few leaves, silhouetted against a California sky.

Words can barely describe the joy in my grandmother’s eyes as she turned 100 last January. We celebrated with a luncheon at Beth El Synagogue, a very special place dear to her, friends and family traveled near and far. This photograph is perfection like Sophie.

We weren’t happy with our room. We were on the outskirts of the property at La Quinta, but it all gets put in perspective when the girls couldn’t believe there was a pool right outside their door, basically our own private little spot. With each stroke, Sylvie gained more and more confidence as a swimmer. Each day she’d throw on her swimming suit, run out through the door, and into the pool. She wouldn’t sit still, until this precious quiet moment, with a towel around her body, eyes glazed over, staring off into the distance, silence, and then I clicked the shutter.

When I think of Palm Springs, this is the picture that comes to mind. Old deco patio furniture, palm trees, clean line architecture, case study homes, my hero Julius Shulman, rolling mountains, green grass, blue skies, and flat roofs.

Those that know me well, know that I like to to creep around our movie sets, Leica in hand, when I come for a visit. Office Christmas Party was some of the best times I’ve had making a movie because we were making it with good people. The ‘magic of the movies’ is something special, and what I love about this photograph is that it exemplifies that magic. The operator shoots the camera, the boom guy records the sound, fake snow falls from the cherry picker, Jason and Olivia perform, and the A.D. readies to yell cut. Not mention the set is made to feel like it is the top of a building but is firmly planted on the ground. Can you say, magic?!?!

Michael and I were on our way to the airport after leaving the set of Ghost in the Shell. Our driver wanted to show us a few quick sites in and around Wellington, New Zealand before we caught our ride home. So we drove to the top of Mount Victoria and the view was stunning. The vast city below, the bay creeping its way inland. We were on the other side of the world.

This is what best friends looks like. This was photograph was made just after their performance of Cinderella by Ovation Performing Arts School at Sherman Oaks Elementary. Capturing that sense of purity, proudness, and exhilaration is something that makes me want to take photographs of young people.

That Day in Paris, we sat in Room 77 of the Louvre, 19th Century France, as the world swirled around us. Though the pictures are stagnant moments in time, the room seems to breath life and energy as people from all ways of the world pass back and forth, looking at such beautiful creations. It’s easy to get up in all of it, feel rushed to see it all, but instead we’d rather take a minute and soak it all up.

It was important to me to capture this image while visiting Musee d’Orsay. I had a feeling this particular clock would be a busy stop for tourists. To get it clean would have been a miracle, so instead, what made sense was to shoot all the tourists as silhouettes, clean edges but blow out the light coming through the clock face. I love how it’s such a center piece of the museum.

Place des Vosges is special, particularly on this day when we came across these art students sketching in the park. Eager minds capturing the energy and flow that is this beautiful setting of fountains, trees, tourists, and statues. This photography hopefully captures the beauty of those making beauty.

Classic Paris. What’s unique about this photograph is the height of the water in the Seine. Record rain fall blasted France while we were there, so much rain that even the Louve was shut down for a few days, art was moved to higher ground to protect against the chance of flooding. This photograph was inspired by Peter Turnley’s book French Kiss. It’s classic, it’s timeless, could be the 1651 or 2016.
13. Amanda, Jardins du Trocadero, Paris, June 3, 2016
This photograph was taken on our final full day in Paris. There is only one place to truly shoot a subject against the Eiffel Tower skyline and that place is Jardins du Tracadero. Amanda is so happy in this picture. She wanted to recreate a photograph she saw on Instagram. I love her black scarf, the way she wore her hair that week, and her cute little body. I must’ve had her walk up and down the stairs ten times to capture this image. It’s my favorite from our trip.

It’s interesting how you can take many many photographs, create albums, selects, modify many, throw away lots. And then go through those photographs some time later only to find a gem that you had originally thrown out. When I originally made my Chicago album, this photograph wasn’t even included, but I absolutely love it. Estella’s expression of feeling slighted (about what, I don’t know!), the bent knee, doritos, and those sunglasses right out of the movie The Crush. It’s her to a T!

Ned and I wandered Hollywood Boulevard shooting a marketing campaign for his upcoming show The Movement - a motivational musical that helps people grasp their passions through music and dance. We came across this space just off the boulevard and Ned laid down like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly before him, gracefully dancing in his white stans. This kid was born to bring people together, dance and music his tool, his thought process his weapon, and much more. We must have shot 100 frames alone in this little alley but his grace mixed with the his power seemed to have come together nicely in this image.

We celebrated my dad’s 70th birthday in La Costa California this past October. For dinner one evening we went to the Chart House in Carlsbad, right on the ocean. There were these amazing rocks and lights making the view of the ocean incredible. But the view was missing something. Luckily Estella and Sylvie were near by so they jumped up on the rocks and held each other tight, two sisters connecting, letting their differences fall aside for a brief moment to show just how much they love each other.
