In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Romanesco is the consummation of cauliflower season. It usually is the last of the varieties to be harvested. The plants are enormous and each of the four heads weighed 3-4 pounds this year. Read more about Romanesco in a previous post.
That’s me behind the Romanesco for perspective. Harvest generates quite a pile of leaves for the compost and a number of bunnies in the ‘hood. I’ve not been able to interest any humans in the leaves and I’m too overwhelmed with cauliflower to think about options for the foliage.
Despite my staggered planting, all seventeen plants were ready to harvest within a two week period. Some were shared with neighbors and foodie friends who know just what to do with a Romanesco or purple cauliflower.
Unlike navel oranges, tangerines do not “store” well on the tree. It was time to remove them all and begin the neighborhood distribution. No one turns down the Satsuma tangerines. We’ve stored a couple dozen of the ugly ones in the fridge for our continued enjoyment. The crop was the largest we’ve ever had though it’s a mystery why. They’re extra juicy this year, perhaps due to our regular and abundant rain.
It was also the week for a major harvest and distribution of lettuce. Most of this batch is Outredgeous with some Sea of Red and Dark Red Lollo Rossa. As the weather warms this week, some of the lettuce will think about bolting so there may be another substantial harvest.
Check my blog post In My Garden, Late January to see the garden in its winter glory.
Several batches of Sweetened Oven Dried Orange Slices utilized some of the abundant navel oranges. It’s a sweet-tart way to extend the season as they store well in glass jars.
About a dozen unseasonable strawberry guavas bring winter delight. These are about an inch in diameter and luscious. I pull a couple from the fridge every day and warm them in a sunny window to appreciate all the goodness.
February Gold daffodil cheers me on the way to the garden.
Check my What I’m Planting Now page. It’s been a busy week in the garden planting the place opened by the cauliflower harvest.
Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Happy Acres Blog returns this week. Join in and see what garden bloggers around the world harvested last week.

Rose Hips Add a Splash of Color to the Garden in Fall and Winter
Tumblr media
Rose Hips Add a Splash of Color to the Garden in Fall and Winter Rose Hips Add a Splash of Color to the Garden in Fall and Winter:-The rose has lengthy been thought to be the “queen of flowers,” revered for its perfume and wonder. However much less lauded are the orange and pink hips, or seedpods, that type after the flowers fade. And that’s a disgrace. In the event that they’re left on the plant, the rose hips will take heart stage in autumn and supply a gorgeous pop of coloration by way of the winter — or a minimum of till the birds get them. Like each fruiting plant and tree, a rose’s blossoms will give method to fruit if left undisturbed. That fruit, the hip, comprises a seed. Not all roses produce hips, nevertheless. Some trendy cultivars are sterile. For the most important, greatest or tastiest hips, hunt down rambling, shrub and wild, non-hybrid species roses. My favorites are the North American native Rosa Virginiana’s shiny, scarlet hips, Rosa glauca’s clusters of small, deep pink hips, and Rosa rugosa’s candy hips, that are so giant and spherical they remind me of cherry tomatoes. To enhance and enhance the hips your roses produce, deal with vegetation to month-to-month purposes of a bloom-boosting fertilizer through the rising season. The extra roses the plant produces, the extra hips you’ll have. Cease deadheading roses in August to permit the final flush of blooms to develop hips. TEA AND JAM Wealthy in vitamin C and excessive in antioxidants, calcium and magnesium, all rose hips are edible. Nonetheless, most are too tart to eat with out sweeteners, so they're used to make jams and jellies, syrups and tea-like drinks. Solely hips from vegetation not handled with pesticides must be thought of for consumption. To reap, wait till after the primary mild frost, which can sweeten their taste, then pull hips off the plant or clip them utilizing scissors or pruners. Depart behind any which might be dried up, shriveled or rotted. To arrange hips for tea, take away petal remnants and different plant particles, then rinse properly in chilly water. Small hips will be dried complete, but when utilizing giant hips, like these of Rosa rugosa, slice them in half and take away the seed and prickly, bushy fibers from inside earlier than continuing (enjoyable truth: These prickly rose seed fibers are used as a frequent ingredient in itching powder, the novelty merchandise some may name the “king” of pranks). Place cleaned hips in a meals dehydrator or in a single layer on a baking sheet in a 100-degree oven for a number of hours till brittle, then retailer in an air-tight glass jar in a cool, darkish place. Then, everytime you’d like a steaming, nutritious beverage, add a heaping teaspoon of dried hips to a cup of boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes. Sweeten to style. To make jams and jellies, clear and take away seeds as above, no matter hip measurement, then simmer for quarter-hour. Pressure out the solids, and use the ensuing liquid in your favourite recipe. If consuming or ingesting rose hips isn’t your, um, cup of tea, you may use them in seasonal decorations. Clip every hip (or cluster of hips) from vegetation with a number of inches of stem connected, then tuck them into autumn and winter wreaths or add to vases with or with out minimize flowers. MAKING NEW ROSES Planting roses from seed doesn’t at all times yield dependable outcomes, however for those who’d prefer to attempt, slice open the hips, take away seeds and completely rinse off any remaining pulp as a result of it might forestall germination. Fold seeds right into a moist paper towel and seal in a zipper-top plastic bag, then refrigerate for 6-10 weeks (test the paper towel periodically and moisten calmly when it dries out). After the chilling interval, sow seeds indoors, ¼-deep in shallow containers or seedling trays full of sterile seed-starting combine. Preserve the soil persistently calmly moist however not soggy. It may take one to 4 months for seeds to sprout, and germination charges are low. Enhance your probabilities of success by tripling the variety of seeds you sow. Transplant seedlings open air in spring, after the hazard of frost has handed – and hope for the very best. — Jessica Damiano writes the award-winning Weekly Filth E-newsletter and common gardening columns for The AP. Bohemienne Life Summer 2020 Collection
Bohemienne Life makes beautiful wax melts, and I particularly love her summer collections. Many of my all-time favorites (Gallowglass, Little Witch, and Mermaid) were included in this sale, so I seized the opportunity to stock up for the year. These melts were purchased over the course of three different sales (a summer pre-order, a summer overstock ready-to-ship sale, and a small autumn teaser ready-to-ship sale), so I also have lots of samples to review!
Tumblr media
Gallowglass
Scent description: A blend of bracing fresh mint and watery sea kelp, and full of salty air and driftwood.
I have a love-hate relationship with mint. There are a few perfume/bath and body houses that make mint scents that I love (like Arcana), and Bohemienne Life is one of them. Gallowglass is a really beautiful and refreshing scent that makes my home smell clean and peaceful. The mint really is bracing--it’s a lot like the bright, lightly-sweetened mint of candy canes. There’s a hint of ocean here, but this scent is all about the mint for me. I love this blend in the summer, but it would also be appropriate in the winter.
Rough Washed Linen
Scent description: A combination of cashmere, amber, musk, and laundered linen to create that hard-to-capture aroma of warm rough washed linen.
I took a chance on this scent because it sounded so clean, refreshing, and interesting--and I’m really glad that I did. Yes, it’s a clean linen scent, but it’s also so much more than that. I swear that I smell a hint of orange here, but my nose could be playing tricks on me. The musk is beautiful--like a golden skin musk. There’s a very light hint of resinous, golden amber that elevates this linen scent to something very elegant and refined. I will very much enjoy melting this one and I hope that it makes an appearance again in the future!
Tumblr media
Little Witch
Scent description: Energizing potion of sage, soft mint, lavender, black tea and elder flowers.
I’ve reviewed this scent before along with Gallowglass (https://ellocentipede.tumblr.com/post/189723505153/bohemienne-life-spring-summer-2019), but it’s a favorite of mine and I thought that I’d revisit it again. This is a gorgeous mint tea scent, much like a smooth Moroccan mint tea. I always look forward to melting this one--it makes my home smell clean, happy, and refreshed.
Tumblr media
Unicorn Sprinkles Cookies
Scent description: Warm from the oven cookies, with fluffy Cotton Candy, Rainbow Candy Drops, Sugared Lemon with Unicorn sprinkles.
These really smell just like the description. There’s a base of sweet, warm sugar cookie, and it is absolutely coated in a thick layer of rainbow sprinkles, fruity gum drops, and clouds of pink and blue cotton candy. This is a really fun scent for the end of summer and the beginning of fall, and it’s making me wistful for fair season!
Tumblr media
Bloom
Scent description: Neroli & shea butter.
This is a simple blend that is really nice for spring and summer. I’m a huge fan of neroli (orange blossom), but sometimes it can be a bit sharp and perfumey. The smooth shea butter takes care of that here--smoothing the edges of the neroli and creating a beautiful, smooth, waxy orange blossom scent. This is a very pretty and happy scent!
Tumblr media
Zen
Scent descrtiption: A blend of green tea, spearmint & Lemon grass.
This is a lovely lemony tea blend. I get lots of smooth, green tea, the barest hint of refreshing spearmint, and a slice of lemon floating on top. This is a lot like Little Witch, but with lemon instead of a hint of floral.
Tumblr media
Mermaid
Scent description: An intoxicating blend of fresh coconut, plumeria, lotus, driftwood, Ylang Ylang, freesia, fresh rain, lily of the valley, night blooming jasmine.
Mermaid is my very favorite ocean scent (at least in wax form!), and I was so, so happy to see it offered in one of the ready-to-ship sales. I’d been hoarding a sample of it forever, since Kyme said that she was no longer able to offer it due to not being able to source one of its ingredients. It’s possible that the scent used for this batch is the very last that she had, but I’m hoping that that’s not the case and that instead she’s been able to track down the ingredients again. Mermaid smells like sun-warmed waxy, tropical florals (I get more plumeria than anything else), Coppertoney coconut (one of my favorite scents in life), with a hint of dry, bleached driftwood and a nip of warm ocean rain. It’s gorgeous and has wonderful throw and longevity.
Tumblr media
Raspberry Boom Boom
Scent description: Raspberries, white cake, cream cheese, rose, apples and amber.
Oh this is lovely. This is the ultimate foodie raspberry scent. The raspberries are ripe, sweet, and tart, and the cake and cream cheese are just right. This is definitely a foodie scent, but it’s not overly sweet thanks to the tartness from the raspberries. I don’t specifically smell the rose or apples, but I imagine that they’re rounding out the scent into something more refined than a simple “raspberry cake”. Really lovely--I’m so happy that I took a chance on this one.
Rose Quartz
Scent description: A refreshing crisp blend of lemon, bergamot, apple, Jasmine, cedar, orange blossoms, fern, white musk and amber.
Somehow this smells exactly like the feel of rose quartz to me--it’s bright, light, airy, and softly pink. It doesn’t really smell like the notes to me--it’s very well-blended. It smells like a light pink musk, a hint of orange blossoms on a breeze, and morning dew. A lovely, elegant, and calming blend.
Tumblr media
Pumpkin Cake Pops
Scent description: Fluffy pumpkin cake doused in bourbon, then rolled in spiced cinnamon sugar.
This smells like bananas foster to me! It’s like caramelized bourbon sauce over warm banana pumpkin bread. This is a wonderful gourmand blend for autumn.
Tumblr media
Voodoo Praline Cookie
Scent description: Aroma of rich salted caramel pecan pralines, butterscotch brûlée and soft warm cookies.
I fooled my husband with this melt--he thought it was an actual brownie! How gorgeous is this? The pecans look so incredibly realistic. The scent is wonderful. This smells like actual pralines. The pecan note is gorgeous and smells wonderful with the sweet butterscotch. This is one for the foodie lovers!
Tumblr media
Samples generously included:
Blackberry Bay
Scent description: A blend of blackberry, bay laurel, spiced apple cider, oak moss & woods.
This is a fun twist on a blackberry scent! It’s like a warm, blackberry compote, not a fresh-off-of-the-vine berry. This compote is sizzling on a wooden kitchen table in a cabin in the woods. In the kitchen hang strings of dried bay laurel and bayberry wreaths. I would not have selected this for myself based on the notes, but if this available in the autumn pre-order I will definitely purchase more. It’s a really nice autumnal (and even wintery!) scent that’s not your typical apple-pumpkin-spice variety. A lovely atmospheric blend with hints of spiced foodie goodness.
Brigid
Scent description: Celtic goddess of fire as well as an Irish saint. Honey, juicy red apples, mahogany wood smoke, and sweet amber musk.
I would likely not have tried this on my own in spite of my fondness for Brigid--the apples and wood smoke notes would scare me off. I’m so, so grateful that Kyme included a sample in my order, because this is gorgeous and will be a favorite for me in the autumn and winter. I get a lot of wood smoke, but it’s surprisingly not harsh or acrid (maybe it’s the mahogany making it so nice and smooth?), but really warm, cozy, and inviting. The honeyed apples are both sweetening and perking up the smoke. A gorgeous atmospheric scent.
Half Baked
Scent description: A blend of Applejack, Whisky and mild Woodsmoke.
Holy smokes this is good. This is the ultimate autumnal wood smoke blend. I hope it’s offered again in the presale! This smoke is so smooth and gorgeous--it’s cozy and atmospheric. The apple jack is lightly spiced with cinnamon and complements the smoke beautifully. I love this!
Lavender Latte
Scent description: Fresh coffee is blended with coconut milk and lavender honey, served with a warm sugared beignet.
I tend to avoid coffee scents, but good gravy this one is gorgeous. It is the milkiest, creamiest, lovely sweet coffee scent ever. The lavender is the icing on the cake for me--it’s smooth and gentle and almost toothsome, like sugared lavender buds. A beautiful cozy and comforting scent!
Lemon Lavender Tea Cakes
Scent description: Sweet little tea cakes infused with bright lemon zest and herbal lavender buds, topped with a dollop of decadent sweet coconut cream and a steaming cup of tea.
Typing out that description made me hungry! I get lots of the bright, zippy lemon zest in this blend, followed by smooth, warm tea and a hint of cake and cream. This is a gourmand blend, but it’s really fresh and refreshing due to the prominence of the lemon. It’s really nice, and I imagine would be a crowd pleaser!
Pink Chocolate
Scent description: Fluffy chocolate coconut cake and pink sugar frosting.
This does smell like a white chocolate coconut cake! This would be great in a spring/Easter collection--it smells like a cake that would be in the shape of a bunny or lamb. It’s sweet, but not overly sweet--the mild and milky coconut tempers the chocolate and sugar. A super fun and happy scent.
Stache
Scent description: A blend of warm woods, supple leather, rich amber, and spices.
Ooooh this is a treat. This smells like a desert market--warm dry spices, hot sun, a hint of sand, rich resins, fragrant, precious woods, a hint of worn saddle leather. Utterly gorgeous. I will absolutely purchase this one if made available!

Offering Recipe: Pastelli
Of the many types of offerings made to the gods, one is the "honeyed cake". Likely this was a sweetened, flat disk of barley flour (Baring the Aegis provides an approximation here). I thought I might be a little unorthodox and use another ancient confection: Pastelli.
Pastelli (παστέλι) is a modern Italian name for a sesame and honey bar that is thought to have originated in Greece roughly 6,000 years ago. Known also as itrion, the Cretan koptoplakous (κοπτοπλακοῦς), or gastris (γάστρις), pastelli was documented in Herodotus' Histories and Homer's Illiad where it was used to fortify soldiers during war. It was also said to symbolize fertility and was served during Greek weddings. Perhaps ideal for devotees of Hera, Aphrodite, and Persephone? 👸🐚💀
Ingredients
Pastelli is essentially a two ingredient recipe: a 2:1 ratio by volume (e.g. 1 cup to ½ cup) of sesame seeds to honey. The quality of the honey is most important and Greek honey is recommended not just because it is thematically appropriate; it also has a complex flavor.
Optional ingredients include: lemon or orange zest (incredibly fragrant!), pistachios, almonds, pomegranate seeds, and dried fruit (pankarpia, another popular offering) such as figs or apricots. I find dates too sweet but I highly recommend experimenting.
Pastelli is soft and sticky. Though it is not traditional, you might like to add sugar to stiffen it. This would be done at a 4:2:1 ratio by volume of sesame, honey, sugar.
I like to make a thoroughly non traditional change: I use black sesame. It has a slightly earthier flavor and is visually dramatic.
Method
Toast sesame in a pan on low to medium heat until it is lightly golden (or until fragrant if using black sesame). If you've elected to include nuts, toast them in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes for pistachio and 10 minutes for almonds.
Remove sesame (and nuts) from the heat and transfer to a separate plate or bowl to cool.
Prepare a baking sheet (or baking dish if you prefer thick slices) with greased parchment paper. Traditionally a marbled slab or muslin cloth would be brushed with olive oil or soaked in sweet wine for this use.
In a small saucepan bring honey to a simmer over medium heat (roughly 5 minutes). Add lemon zest and/or sugar if using, and stir gently.
Once the honey has begun to foam you’ll need to work fast. Remove it from heat and stir in sesame seeds, nuts, and/or dried nuts.
Empty onto your prepared baking pan and flatten until even with an oiled spatula.
Allow the pastelli to come down to room temperature then place in the refrigerator to cool for half an hour. If using sugar, cool at room temperature until the pastelli is semi-hard. The sugar will make them stiff and difficult to cut or shape the longer it cools.
You may cut pastelli into bars, triangles, or crescents. If I feel the offering needs a little more intent I will use a dog shaped cookie cutter. Be sure to oil your hands, knife, or cookie cutters as you go. Note: it’s best not to try to shape the pastelli until it’s at room temperature. Hot honey is not as fun on your fingers as it is in writing.
Pastelli with toasted almonds and blood orange zest:
Please let me know how the recipe works for you! What sort of things do you like to add to honor your Theoi?
My last batch of black sesame pastelli with pistachio, cut into bars. I promise tastes much better them it looks.

Dandelion taraxacum
Tumblr media
You should think twice before removing those pesky dandelions (taraxacum) from your front yard! Dandelions are not only edible, but they are also full of health benefits. These medicinal plants are packed with things that are great for you: vitamin K, vitamin C, iron, calcium and more. These vitamins and minerals help support strong bone and liver health. All parts of a dandelion are useful and good for you. For example, dandelion roots are commonly used for teas, the leaves are used as garnishes for different dishes and dandelion sap is great for your skin! Dandelion health benefits: - Detoxifies liver and supports overall liver health - Treats skin infection - Supports overall bone health - Treats and helps prevent urinary infections Common uses: - Brew roots for a tea - Use leaves as garnish for dishes - Consume as a pill
Health Benefits of Dandelion Tea
Dandelions are packed with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost your health. Ever part of the plant from dandelion roots and dandelion leaves to the vibrant dandelion flowers is edible. Dandelions contain antioxidants such as beta-carotene that help prevent cell damage. The leaves and flowers also contain vitamin C, which helps to boost the immune system and ward of the common cold. Dandelions are a good source of fiber that streamlines digestion. The leaves of the dandelion plant contain more protein than spinach, making it a good choice post-workout. Dandelion roots are often used to make tea and boast significant health benefits of their own. They contain high levels of potassium, calcium, and phosphorous. All of these nutrients promote bone and tooth health. Magnesium in dandelion roots helps to relax muscles and alleviate pain. Dandelion root also works as a diuretic and detoxifier, purifying the entire body. The roots are also chock full of antioxidants. These antioxidants work to eliminate free radicals in the body that can cause premature aging and cancer. Many of the antioxidants found in dandelion roots can help to inhibit the growth of and induce death in cancer cells.
HOW TO   Step 1: Harvest Dandelion Roots The dandelion plant features long, wiry taproots that are often twisted and deeply embedded in the earth. Use a large spade or a dandelion fork to remove as much of the roots as possible. Separate the root from the leaves and stems. Rinse well using cool water at high pressure. You can save the leaves for use in salads and keep the flowers for dandelion flower teas. Cut the fresh roots into smaller pieces using a mandolin or sharp knife. Step 2: Roast Dandelion Roots Preheat the oven to 200 F and place the dandelion roots on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Leave the dandelion roots to roast for 2 to 3 hours depending on thickness. Rotate the roots often to avoid burning. The roots are done when you can snap them in half easily and cleanly. If the roots bend and are flexible when trying to break, they need more time roasting. You can also roast the dandelion roots in a pan on medium high heat. Cast iron pans work best for imparting the smoky, rich flavor of roasted dandelions. Stir often and make sure to avoid burning the roots. The dandelion roots will be ready for tea brewing when they turn dark brown. Step 3: Heat Water You can grind the dried roots into a fine powder using your coffee grinder if preferred. Otherwise, you can simply use the small dried root pieces you roasted earlier. Use a small saucepan to bring water to a boil. Add the dandelion root to the boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes. Step 4: Strain and Serve Strain the roasted roots out using a fine mesh strainer. Serve as-is or add sweetener and milk to taste. Dandelion Leaf Tea Recipe You can make a quick cup of dandelion tea from the leaves in your own garden. Step 1: Harvest and Prepare Leaves Harvest six leaves from the dandelion plant. Choose only the leaves that are young and tender. You'll end up with bitter leaves and bitter tea if you use more mature dandelion leaves. Rinse the leaves well under running water and pat dry with a towel. Cut the leaves into small pieces or grind gently with a muddler to release flavor and healthy compounds. Add the leaves to your tea cup. Step 2: Heat Water Bring water to a rolling boil and pour into your cup. Steep the dandelion tea for 5 to 10 minutes. Taste every 30 seconds after the first 5 minutes to ensure flavor your enjoy. Step 3: Sweeten (Optional) You can drink your dandelion leaf tea as-is or sweeten it using coconut oil, honey, or brown sugar. Keep the sweeteners to a minimum to preserve the healthy nature of this tea and avoid turning it into a calorie-dense beverage. You can also flavor your dandelion tea naturally by adding a slice of lemon or orange.   Dandelion Flower Tea Recipe Dandelion flowers make for a delicious iced tea beverage that can help you cool down in summer. Combined with a little lime, this weed tea is just what you need this summer by the pool. Step 1: Harvest Dandelions Gather about a quart of fresh dandelions from your garden. Remove all the stems and leaves and place the yellow flowers in a colander. Rinse well using cool water. Step 2: Add Hot Water Add 1 cup of hot water to a large bowl. Add the dandelion flowers and steep for 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the dandelion tea into a large glass pitcher. Step 3: Refrigerate Add the juice of 3 to 4 limes for a tangy taste. Place the dandelion tea in the refrigerator and cool for a few hours. You can serve the dandelion tea with the flowers in the glass or strain them out if preferred. Dandelion tea can be saved for up to 36 hours. Step 4: Sweeten (Optional) Add a stevia leaf — leaves from the plant used to make the famous sweetener — for a light and natural sweetener. Make sure to add the leaf to the hot water and let it steep with the dandelion flowers. Read the full article

Celebrate the Holidays with 25 Keto Christmas Cookie Recipes
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and that means lot’s of holiday baking, Christmas parties, and annual cookie exchanges. Not surprisingly, this also makes it one of the most challenging times of year to enjoy holiday foods while adhering to a keto diet. Most traditional Christmas cookie recipes are so laden with sugar that even a single cookie can take you quickly into high-carb territory, kicking you straight out of ketosis.
Fortunately, there’s no need to pass up on any of your favorite Christmas cookies, because there are enough keto recipes to keep your taste buds happy without ruining your eating plan. These holiday cookies are festive, fun, and most importantly: delicious. They just happen to be keto-friendly while they’re at it! You can serve them at parties just like you would a typical sugary cookie, and in most cases, your guests will none the wiser. Time to get baking!
Buttery shortbread cookies are a must at Christmas time, and this recipe takes them to the next level with the addition of seasonal cranberry and orange flavors. No sugars or artificial ingredients are necessary, either. These cookies get all of their delicious taste from real orange zest, chopped fresh cranberries, vanilla and almond extracts, and toasted almonds on top. After making the dough, it’s rolled into a log for easy slice and bake preparation, meaning you can store it in the freezer for later, and whip up a freshly baked batch anytime you like!
It wouldn’t feel like Christmas without having a least a few decorated sugar cookies, right? These “no-sugar sugar cookies” are the perfect keto solution to a timeless holiday tradition. The buttery vanilla dough is sweetened with Swerve, then cut into adorable holiday shapes using your favorite cookie cutters, and decorated with colorful keto icing (and optional sprinkles). They’re cute as can be, and are sure to spread some holiday cheer!
A simple and satisfying holiday cookie recipe, these Italian Christmas treats are just as nice with a keto twist. Just like usual, the little dough mounds are baked, coated with a glaze, and topped with colorful sprinkles. However, this recipe uses Swerve as a sweetener in both the dough and the glaze topping, keeping things low carb.
These keto gingerbread men cookies provide of the traditional cuteness with none of the unnecessary sugar. Kids (and adults) love them, and they’re perfect for dunking in milk! They have a wonderful blend of warming spices, including cinnamon, ginger and cloves. After they’ve been baked, they’re decorated however you like with a keto royal white icing to really bring them to life!
Snowball cookies are aptly named for their charming appearance: they really do resemble little balls of snow, especially thanks to their powdered sugar coating. (Note that sometimes they’re also called Mexican wedding cakes or Russian tea cookies, but “snowballs” seems to be the most holiday-appropriate choice!) These holiday favorites are easily adapted to fit a keto diet by tweaking the dough recipe, and then rolling them in Swerve confectioner’s sweetener after baking for the powdered snow effect.
Fun little thumbprint cookies are always a holiday favorite, and these keto versions are a breeze to whip up. They get their raspberry-flavored center from a dollop of sugar-free raspberry jam (or homemade raspberry preserves), which adds the perfect pop of color to complement the buttery almond flour crust.
Who could pass up a quintessential chocolate chip cookie? Consider this recipe your master class in perfecting the keto version! Whether you prefer your cookies more crispy or chewy, there are tips for how to achieve your favorite texture, how to choose the right sugar-free sweetener, and which grain-free flours are the best. When you’re through, you’ll have guilt-free chocolate chip cookies to eat all season long!
Warm, cozy cinnamon flavors and a fun swirled pattern make these cookies a perfect holiday treat. They come together nicely by layering together a cinnamon dough with an almond flour dough, then rolling the two sheets of dough together to form a log. After slicing and baking, they’re ready to enjoy with a glass of milk.
There’s no doubt that party guests are guaranteed to be impressed by these keto pinwheel cookies! They have a beautiful spiraled design that features a mouthwatering chocolate swirl nestled in between vanilla cookie dough. A combination of Swerve and stevia extract provide sweetness, keeping the recipe completely keto friendly.
You’d be hard pressed to find cuter Christmas cookies than these! The soft, star-shaped cookies are made of delicious chocolate peppermint dough, which is baked and then dipped in a homemade peppermint chocolate coating. As a final touch, the cookies can be sprinkled with crushed sugar-free peppermints before the coating hardens, or drizzled with melted sugar-free white chocolate, forming the prettiest holiday toppings.
Biscotti is the perfect treat to enjoy with a favorite beverage, like coffee, hot tea, cocoa, or even a simple glass of milk. These delicious cookies are the perfect size and shape for dunking, and get some extra holiday flair with nutty pecans, slightly tart dried cranberries, and even a decadent chocolate-dipped base.
Coconut already happens to be a keto-friendly food, which makes these tasty macaroons a great choice during the holidays. Instead of the usual sugar, this recipe uses Swerve’s powdered confectioner’s sweetener to achieve the same scrumptious taste. And for extra pizazz, they can be dipped in melted chocolate and topped with optional almond slivers for garnish.
A perfect coffee companion, these “Biscoff” inspired cookies will have you reaching for seconds and thirds. They are deliciously crispy and spiced with a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamon, cloves, and even a bit of white pepper. For extra cuteness, you can use holiday cookie cutters to make fun shapes, and top them with slivered almonds before baking.
Lemon bars are big crowd-pleasers all year long, and they certainly provide wonderful variety at holiday parties. In this keto version, tart and tangy lemon curd forms a creamy layer above a buttery almond flour crust. There is no skimping on flavor, thanks to fresh lemon juice, lemon zest, rich egg yolks, and butter all blended into the filling (plus extra lemon zest in the cookie base). As a final touch, a sprinkle of sugar-free powdered sweetener on top completes the look and taste.
These easy-peasy cookies come together with only three ingredients! It may sound too good to be true, but some plain peanut butter, erythritol sweetener, and a single large egg are all you’ll need to whip up a batch of mouthwatering keto peanut butter cookies. After rolling the dough into balls, you can even press the surface with a fork to get the same criss-cross marks you’ll find on traditional cookies.
Inspired by Andes mints, these irresistible holiday brownies have a delicious chocolate and mint flavor combo. A few drops of food coloring achieve the perfect pastel mint green color on top, while the fudgy base below is rich and chocolatey. Just three simple ingredients form the brownie base, while the delicious keto buttercream frosting is flavored with peppermint extract for a wintery taste.
A cross between a no-bake cookie and a keto fat bomb, these delicious little treats are packed with flavor, but not the usual sugar. Instead, they use monk fruit and Swerve for sweetness, real dark rum instead of rum flavor extract, and a decadent combination of chocolate, coconut, and almond flour to form a dough. After rolling into little balls, they get dipped in melted chocolate and sprinkled with coconut flakes, forming small, irresistible truffles.
While pure maple syrup is a natural sweetener, it’s also high in sugar, and therefore difficult to incorporate successfully into a keto diet. These yummy cookies get their tempting maple flavor from sugar-free syrup, avoiding the sugar spike completely. Decadent macadamia nuts add extra healthy fats and crunchy goodness!
There’s nothing like a big, warm snickerdoodle cookie in the winter to make you feel cozy. These keto cookies are chewy and tender in the center, slightly crispy around the edges, and full of delicious cinnamon flavor. Thanks to a grain-free flour blend and a bit of xantham gum, they form a perfect cookie texture that stays nice and thick after baking. A dusting of ground cinnamon and monk fruit coats the surface when they come out of the oven, and then they’re all yours to munch and enjoy.
When all you want is chocolate, then chocolate is all you need! These decadent cookies are fudge and rich, and don’t skimp on chocolatey goodness. Cocoa powder and sugar-free chocolate chips join forces to create a double chocolate recipe, which includes a garnish of flakey sea salt for the perfect flavor punch.
Oatmeal and raisins aren’t ingredients you see in most keto recipes, which might lead you to believe that this classic cookie flavor is off-limits. Fortunately, that’s not the case! This grain-free recipe uses shredded coconut and ground flaxseed to provide the same chewy texture of baked oatmeal, and a few real raisins (and chocolate chips if you like) are perfectly portioned to keep things keto-friendly.
Is there anything better than chocolate and peanut butter together? These cute little peanut butter blossom cookies will turn anyone into a fan. The traditional recipe features a sugary peanut cookie topped with a chocolate kiss pressed into the center, but the low carb version is just as mouthwatering. A blend of three keto flours (almond, coconut, and peanut flour) make the perfect cookie dough, and a bit of melted sugar-free chocolate and butter forms a chocolate ganache button in the center.
A little bit of rum extract takes the flavor of these keto blondies to new holiday heights! Instead of brown sugar, these beautiful blondies are sweetened with Lakanto Golden, and have fiber-rich psyllium husk to ensure a perfectly chewy texture. Vanilla and rum extracts round out the flavor, and chopped walnuts provide heart-healthy fat with a lovely bit of crunch. Bake a batch to slice into squares, and you’re all set for your next holiday get-together. These won’t last long!
These delicious sandwich cookies definitely deserve a spot on your cookie tray! A combination of hazelnut and almond flour are used to make the cookie dough, while a rich chocolate layer fills the center. If you ever get Nutella cravings, then this keto-friendly alternative will be just the chocolate and hazelnut combination you’re looking for.
You might be surprised by the secret ingredient in these “rice” Krispie scotcheroos! Most grains (rice included) are too carb-heavy for a keto diet, so this spin on a classic favorite gets its crispy texture from… crushed pork rinds. Before you run the other way, rest assured that the pork rinds actually don’t affect the flavor of these goodies in any way, which get their tempting taste from ingredients like butter, vanilla, maple-flavored syrup, and a delicious layer of chocolate on top. Give them a try and see for yourself!
Conclusion
With so many keto holiday cookie options, these recipes could end up becoming your new favorite treats for many Christmases to come. Just make sure to pay close attention to the preparation and baking instructions in order to ensure that you get the best result. If you’re new to a keto lifestyle, then some of the ingredients may seem unfamiliar at first, but most are easily found online and in grocery stores, and some might already be in your pantry right now.
Keep in mind that during keto, the goal is to keep your carb intake low and your healthy fat levels high, so although these recipes are designed for a keto diet, it’s still important to track your portions so that you stay within range. As long as you follow all these tips, you should be on your way to eating some delicious holiday treats in no time!

Here are the Mother’s Day garden gifts for my daughter-in-law, Sarah.. She is a committed, caring and creative mom to our two under five grandsons. She’s also an amazing cook. I wonder what she’s do with these.
Disclosure. I wish we could grow grapefruit but we let Seley Ranches in Borrego Springs do that.

In many ways, science says, kids are what YOU eat.
Kids’ eating behaviors are shaped by their own experiences with food and watching what others—like their parents—eat. If you eat a healthy diet, chances are your kids will too—and not just because you’re in charge of the shopping and cooking. Parents are their kids’ first role models. Even if you’ve had some bad habits in the past, your kids will be observing all the healthy changes you’re making now and may want to join in.1
Since you ARE in charge of the shopping and cooking, you can help yourself and your kids by not bringing tempting snacks into the house. It’s tough to be satisfied with an apple when your kids are crunching your favorite chocolate chip cookies.
It’s time to up your snack game! Stock up your kitchen with healthy snacks for kids that also fit into your healthy weight loss plan. Here are some easy snack ideas and healthy snacks for kids—plus some recipes—that will keep you and the kids happy, healthy and satisfied.
1. Fruit Kabobs with Yogurt Dip
Fruit kabobs are a fun and creative way to get in fiber and nutrition. All you have to do is grab some skewers and slide on your favorite fruits! Slice up any combination that you enjoy into bite-sized pieces. Sliced grapes, strawberries, bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe, whole raspberries and blackberries are all tasty options.
Houston Family Nutrition recommends serving fruit kabobs with a side of vanilla yogurt for dipping.2 Just make sure you are choosing a low-fat option that isn’t loaded with a ton of sugar. You could also purchase a plain low-fat yogurt and sweeten it up with a little stevia and vanilla extract.
2. Fruit Parfait
Instead of filling up on store-bought baked goods and sugar-filled desserts, consider making a healthy parfait at home. They are a tasty snack that doubles as sweet treat! Simply layer low-fat yogurt in a glass with fresh berries or fruit, then top with a sprinkling of granola.
Try to find a low-sugar granola at the store for the kiddos, or consider making this homemade Chocolate Granola recipe! > If you’re on the Nutrisystem weight loss plan, you can prepare your own personal parfait using the Nutrisystem Granola while the kids enjoy a different kind.

7. Homemade Granola Bars
Sure, you can buy granola bars at the grocery story. However, then you have no control over the fat and sugar content. Making your own granola bars at home is a much better option, as you can pick and choose the ingredients and flavors that your family loves.
Our Homemade No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola Bar recipe is easy and quick to make—just combine peanut butter, honey, rolled oats and semi-sweet chocolate bits in a saucepan, cool and press into a pan which sets in the freezer. They even fit into your Nutrisystem plan as one Smart Carb and one PowerFuel.
8. Apple Slices and Nut Butter
Apples and peanut butter are a snack time staple. The dynamic duo pairs fiber-rich fruit with the healthy fat and protein that is found in nuts. This balanced snack is a great option to pack for s school or office lunches. Want to switch things up? Almond butter makes this old standby special. You can buy a jar of almond butter and smear one tablespoon on a sliced medium apple, or look for single-serving almond butter packets at the grocery store.
9. Ants on a Log
Every kindergartener’s favorite treat! Smear peanut butter on a celery stalk and stud with raisins. Just like the last snack, you can swap in almond butter for something different. You can even use different types of dried fruit instead of raisins. It’s a simple, three-ingredient treat that the kiddos will be asking for all week!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Healthy “Ice Cream”
Stop buying tubs of ice cream that are loaded with added sugar, fat and calories. If you have a powerful blender, you can easily make your own ice cream at home that’s just as delicious! “Nice cream” is the trendy frozen treat that everyone is blending up in their kitchen. Most recipes use bananas as the base as they create a creamy and decadent consistency that’s just like real ice cream. Then you can have fun and add all of your favorite toppings and additions.
To make a peanut butter and chocolate version of nice cream, grab your blender and combine a quarter-cup of powdered peanut butter with one medium frozen banana and a tablespoon of sugar-free chocolate syrup. Blend until creamy and then eat it right away. It doesn’t keep.
11. Black Bean Brownie Dip
You might want to keep the black beans as a secret ingredient when you serve this healthy snack to the kids. They’ll never know! They’ll also never know that medjool dates and maple syrup supply the sweet to this Black Bean Brownie Dip, which also includes unsweetened vanilla almond milk, Dutch processed unsweetened cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Serve it up with strawberries or graham crackers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12. Spicy Buffalo Deviled Eggs
If your family loves buffalo wings, they’ll love this egg version made with hardboiled eggs, buffalo sauce and light mayonnaise. Each satisfying serving (one whole egg) is only 81 calories. You can count it as one PowerFuel if you’re on the Nutrisystem plan. Get the full recipe here! >
13. Banana Pops
This “popsicle” is healthier than any other option you will find at the store. Featuring fresh bananas and low-fat vanilla yogurt, Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego recommends peeling and cutting the bananas in half and sticking a popsicle stick in the flat end. You will then roll each banana in the yogurt.3
After coating it in the yogurt, we think these tasty pops would be even more delicious with a coating of chopped nuts or granola. Pop them in the freezer when your done so they can firm up before eating. Yum!
14. Chocolate-Covered Fruit
Fruits covered in chocolate are great healthy snacks for kids.  They can even help out in the kitchen with this one! Simply melt some semi-sweet or stevia-sweetened chocolate in the microwave. Once it’s cool enough to handle, let the kids dip their favorite fruits in the chocolate. You can even use dried fruit like dried pineapple slices, mangoes, oranges, apricots or raisins. You can even sprinkle them with chopped nuts, seeds or even sprinkles!

Recipes and typical dishes from Sardinia
Tumblr media
Traditional Sardinian cuisine is a poor but very tasty cuisine. Typically land although there is no shortage of fish dishes being an island, but it is focused a lot on meat, especially pork. We will talk in this article about traditional Sardinian bread, CARASAU bread, known on the continent and indeed known in many parts of the world. As appetizers the MAZZAMURRO that is cooked throughout the island where you make different variants and panADAS, a kind of small fried savory cakes that depending on the place are stuffed differently. And apart from the first dishes that are as many as not to mention the famous Sardinian pig let's called PORCEDDU which is the recipe that most reflects Sardinian cuisine in the world. There is no shortage of fish dishes such as cod with nuts sauce and typical sweets.
CARASAU BREAD
The original Sardinian recipe is that of a unsit bread, kneaded with water, wheat flour or barley flour, crisp and light, with thin discs, for this is also called music paper because they rolled up just like music paper. It was preserved for a long time unaltered and was mainly used to soak it in water, broth or milk. According to tradition this is the typical bread of shepherds and sailors. It was eaten preferably with goat or sheep's cheese or with cottage cheese. A curious thing is that the bread paper CARASAU was used as a dish, which during the meal, was eaten little by little together with the companatic. Needed for CARASAU PANE To make PANE CARASAU you only need two ingredients: hard wheat flour Water That's why the doses are done at the time when we decide how many sheets to make. Preparing the CARASAU PANE Knead the flour with only the water, so much so that you get a rather consistent and soda smooth paste. The dough is flattened with a rolling pin until reduced to very thin sheets of circular shape. So these discs have to be fermented separate from each other by linen cloths, all covered with a wool cloth. After a few hours they should be baked in an already hot oven, wait until they refill, remove them from the oven, open them all around the edges with a sharp knife, then put them on top of each other to cool. Finally put them back in the oven to brown and roast them. This is the original Sardinian recipe as it was once done, now unfortunately with modern taste has changed to the addition of yeast or salt making it lose the characteristic of the uni. Meanwhile, prepare the filling by grating the fresh cheese in a bowl and adding the chopped mint leaves with your hands. Flatten the dough with the rolling pin and prepare many thin sheets about 8 -10 centimeters in diameter. With the filling make balls not too big to crush and lay in the middle of one half of the leaves. The other half is used to close. Weld the two parts now with a cogwheel. In a fairly large frying pan heat the seed oil and just below the temperature fry the panADAS, for a few minutes turning them halfway through cooking.

SEADAS OR SEBADAS
These sweets are typical sweets of pastoral life to the memory of the return of transhumance. They are nuremberg specialties.
