CHAR POSTERS. INEJ GHAFA
she was the wraith – the only law that applied to her was gravity, and some days she defied that, too.

While I do love the hilarity of "Kaz can't actually sense Inej's presence he just says 'Hello Inej' every five minutes" you will pry "Kaz actually CAN sense Inej's presence" from my cold, dead fingers.
Does it make sense? Not really. But for a girl who survived the trauma of unwanted touch by disassociating from her body--something she refers to as "disappearing"--and whose recovery journey has involved a lot of both physical and psychological disappearing, having a boy who cannot touch her (for now) but who, instead, has an ability to "feel" her presence and always knows when she physically disappears... Idk there's something pretty special there if you ask me.

Hey! love your analytical posts! These recent ones... you've really knocked it out of the ballpark! I was wondering whether you'd like to share your take on a few moments in the soc books. Thank you so much:)
How does Kaz know what Inej's tells are? Is it because he "sees everything"? Or maybe because he always looks at her before a fight? What made him look at Inej before the fight with Van Eck?
When Kaz tells Matthias to "watch his tone" with Inej, is it because of her recent injury? Inej doesn't seem surprised by his words, so maybe he's done it before?
If Kaz had known the incinerator shaft was still really hot, would he have still sent her up ("the Wraith can manage it")? Kaz isn't uncaring, especially where Inej is concerned, so why a net for the silos but not a net (or something akin to that) for the incinerator shaft?
Hi, thanks for your question and so sorry I’ve taken so long to answer it!!
On Kaz and Inej’s tells, I definitely think it’s fair to say that he knows hers because he looks at her before the fight; that being his tell. Before the fight on Vellgeluk, Kaz expresses an awareness of this tell and implies that he was trying to stop himself from doing it - “Kaz knew the instant he made his mistake. They’d all known it might come to this. He should have trusted his crew. His eyes should have stayed trained on Van Eck. I est was, in that moment of threat, when he should have thought only of the fight, he looked at Inej.” This is interesting because Inej is entirely unaware of her tell, squaring her shoulders before a move, but Kaz is actively noticing his and condemning himself for it. This probably has a lot to do with Kaz’s self-hatred and his self-destructive nature; if there is any reason to blame himself for something then he finds it, and he takes it out on someone (in this case, Jesper) effectively to jeopardise their relationship as a punishment to himself for ‘failing’. At least that’s how I see it, it’s obviously a very subjective thing and that’s just my interpretation. What I do find particularly interesting, is that Kaz claims no-one notices his real tell because they assume the cane is his tell, revealing an attack against his bad leg to be an easy target, and this is confirmed by Pekka Rollins’ complete failure to acknowledge his tell and/or Kaz and Inej’s feelings towards each other (I’ve talk about that a bit before so I won’t go into major detail), but Van Eck does notice. And not only does he notice the tell, but he immediately recognises what he can do to exploit it - “I wonder what will prove more effective, Ma Ghafa? Torturing Mr Brekker, or making him watch as I torture you” (paraphrasing, I don’t have my Crooked Kingdom on me this second; sorry). I think this is important because this is how Kaz thinks, and there are a couple of parallels between him and Van Eck threaded through the duology as a constant reminder of two things: 1) that Kaz could have been massively successful in Ketterdam as a merchant if only he’d been born rich, meant to highlight the inequity and massive classism of the city/Kerch as a whole, and 2) That Van Eck is just as much a criminal as Kaz or anyone else in the Barrel. He’s Pekka Rollins with a lot more money and a much better reputation, because when you have enough money to outsource you don’t have to get your own hands dirty in the process of scamming people out of their money (secretly bought you jurda farms, kept property off the books, cheated on his taxes, etc), or to buy and se children who are either forced into it or don’t know what they’re signing up for (I’m using his indentured Grisha, the foreign children Inej talks about, and the fact he knows about Vellgeluk as my evidence that he is at the very least wilfully ignorant of a system he’s supporting, and at the worst an active participant in the auction blocks that the other children on the ship with Inej were being taken to or other forms of trading indentures)
When Kaz tells Matthias to watch his tone with Inej, it’s left purposefully ambiguous as to whether his concern is for her or for the general integrity of the group, since this is before the Ice Court Heist and he needs them to trust, or at least co-operate with, each other if he has any hopes of success. I think it’s probably, at least on some level, about both and that could be linked to Inej’s injury - we all know how protective he is of her in the immediate aftermath at the very least. Although I wouldn’t be surprise if he’s defended Inej in this way before, I think it’s also arguable that she has no expectation for the words to be genuinely for her; she always assumes Kaz cares first for the job, second for himself, and third for all others. It’s really only during the Ice Court Heist that she begins to notice the reciprocation of her feelings for him, which is emphasised by her discussion with Jesper in the boat about how uncertain they are that he cares for either of them, and question if it would have killed him to come and see her when she was recovering from the knife wound. We as the readers understand he couldn’t bring himself to see her due to the intensity of his fear and his feelings towards her, but he has thus far given her no reason to think he cares for anyone but himself. Even right before the incinerator shaft climb, she and Jesper express concern to each other that Kaz has set them up somehow and abandoned them to be captured and executed by the Fjerdan guards.
The incinerator is an interesting one, because Kaz never actually mentions the heat. Even when he comments in Inej’s impressive feat afterwards, his exact words are “six storeys in the dark” not ‘six storeys of burning hell in the pitch black with hot coals beneath you’, which is probably how I would’ve categorised the experience. However, having climbed the rope he must have been aware of the heat, so it’s unclear what his real reaction to this is - to be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if her hadn’t noticed at all, since this is in the aftermath of Yellow Protocol being set off by either him or Nina (it’s left ambiguous), him seeing Pekka Rollins, him being chased/attacked by a guard, and him arriving to the others late. I don’t think that any kind of safety feature would have been viable for the incinerator, since they couldn’t have brought anything with them. If they’d known that their clothes would be in the same room then they could have possibly left something with them, but the clothes’ presence was a surprise (“These are our clothes!”) and it would have been nearly impossible to conceal anything or use to her. However, I also think that his insistance on Inej using a net for is important because it’s in the aftermath of him truly coming to terms with his feelings. There’s no denying the way he felt in her absence, the gnawing, empty sensation that came with the fear of losing her, so actually think that his direct quote being something along the lines of “I just spent a lot of time and money on getting my Wraith back, I didn’t do that to lose her again” is a callous way of wording his genuine feelings in this moment. Inej’s refusal to use the net and the restructuring of the plan excluding its presence is also a tension building device, and foreshadows Inej falling from the high wire.
Thank you so much for your question, I am so sorry it’s taken me genuinely forever to answer it!!

13 Days of Fall
Prompt 1: “How come she loves you?”
Tumblr media
– a Kaz Brekker x Inej Ghafa fanfic [AO3 link]
Post Crooked Kingdom
“How come she loves you?”
In which Kaz asks Inej why she loves someone as twisted, crooked and wrong as him. And she gives a befitting response..♡
Tumblr media
It happened when they were at berth twenty-two of the fifth harbor. Inej was leaving again. To fight and save more stolen children like herself and condemn the wretched. To achieve grander feats on the seas. To do penance for her unworthy saints. To atone for the sins she believed she had committed all the time she had worked for the Dregs.
She squeezed his un-gloved hand, staring into his eyes, and his soul as if he hadn’t robbed, killed, lied and betrayed once in his life. As if he was the only man deserving of her kind smiles.
And in that very moment a spy disguised as a runner (probably from the Razorgulls or Liddies) saw them. Saw their entire exchange and immediately took off. Believing himself sly and swift as the feared Wraith herself. Believing he might get away from the clutches of Dirtyhands himself and spread the rumors about him going soft for someone. Someone they all could target and use against him to bring down him and his reign over the barrel.
This was a menial matter only he was meant to deal with. So Kaz waited until Inej’s ship left the harbor.
Then he followed the boy— young and spirited just like he used to be. And despite the ever-present ache in his right leg, Kaz managed to catch the guy right outside the Kooperom, whacked him unconscious with one swing of his silver cane and dragged him to his private room at the Crow Club.
And it was there that it happened.
The boy– now tied up, and with a swollen eye, a bleeding lip and a couple of broken teeth (and bones)– dared laughing in the face of Kaz Brekker, the bastard– the king of the barrel. And uttered the words that seared open a wound in Kaz’s rotten heart— a wound that Kaz tried stitching shut every night in the lonely confines of his private quarters at the Slat.
“How come she loves you ?”
“I don’t know.” Kaz answered without a beat, cleaning his little oyster knife.
The boy coughed blood, heaving as he spoke. “You’re no different than the rest of the monsters in the barrel. So then, what makes you special?”
It was honestly an amazing question. One he mulled about every night, laying in bed. Even when Inej occasionally laid next to him, trustingly asleep besides someone as twisted, crooked and wrong as him.
He always stared at the serenely closed lids of her eyes, gaze instinctively moving towards her nostrils and the rise and fall of her chest to ensure she wasn’t gone just like his brother. To ensure she was still alive. And mused to himself why she chose him. So much that he ended up asking her one time.
“Why me ?”
And Inej…She smiled, her eyes capturing the faint glimmer of stars in the foggy night sky of Ketterdam.
“You saved me Kaz.”
“Inej, ” He had pressed on every syllable of her name. He wouldn’t deny saving her. They had already gone through a heated debate over that and he regretted ever trying to deny that. Why she was so sensitive about that subject of all, he had no idea. But she wasn’t obligated to pay him back. “You don’t owe me anything.”
“Shevrati..” She had whined in an exaggerated display of frustration, raking her fingers through her long, un-braided hair. “It’s because it can only be you.”
That wasn’t enough for him. He was selfish and pathetic, and needed more explanation than just that.
“And why’s that?” He had asked.
Inej merely pouted, pressing her face to his chest (she liked doing that alot nowadays) and whispered, “You wouldn’t get it.”
And she was right. He didn’t get it then. He still doesn’t get it.
Kaz told the same to the young captive spy, crouching before him to level their gazes, grinning sharply. “You wouldn’t get it.”
Then stood back up and walked out the room, leaving the boy tied and locked there for the night. Maybe that will break his spirit a little and convince him to switch his loyalty to the Dregs instead.
Kaz straightened his tie, covered the smidge of that boy’s blood on his hands with his leather gloves, and tapped his cane as he descended towards the bar.
He wasn’t the best boy from the barrel. Or the entirety of Kerch for that matter. But for as long as Inej will want him by her side, he will do his best to attain some semblance of a man worthy of her.
its been a while since i wrote anything kanej, so i hope it was likeable and not OOC :)

KANEJ AU: PHOTOGRAPHER X MODEL Kaz Brekker is an up and coming photographer, talented and brilliant, everyone wants their portrait done by him, but he takes only the photos he wants. Often the subject of his works is of misery and pain; people think he’s revolutionary, but he’s just trying to release the pain that he feels within himself, a way to express the trauma he could never do verbally. At one of his galleries, a young woman looks on the photos with sad eyes and he is compelled towards her. She sees his suffering, she understands it, and for the first time, Kaz feels as though he is at last understood. Inej Ghafa is her name, she breaks down his barriers, and she becomes his muse, the new subject of his photos, representing beauty, peace, and love.

A/N: Welcome to the first installment of my Polycrows Whumptober collection! This is not affiliated with any groups or pre-set prompt list for either Polycrows or Whumptober because I can never find those and I'm not in groups that make them, haha. I thought that it would be fun to do something during October for them to just kind of get it out of my system and I was in the mood to write angst, which is how this ended up coming into being. I try to always write aftercare into my fics that deal with heavy subjects so even though the focus of these fics is going to be on the angst, there will be care and comfort towards the end of them. Each oneshot will come out on an interval of five (so fifth, tenth, fifteenth, etc.) until the end of the month. Thank you all so much for being willing to check this out and I hope you're prepared to come on this ride with me! Stay sissy and bitchy everyone <3
Kaz looked on at the flames that were licking at the sides of the stone building. They had already caught onto the straw thatch in a beautiful burning blaze, the signature purple that the Dregs used whenever they had to utilize fire during their heists. His heavy overcoat kept out the late spring chill that clung to the ground in the form of dewey droplets, trying to reach out and grasp his legs whenever he held still for too long. His cane was clasped in his hands in front of him, keeping him steady and present.
His heart was racing with giddiness and pride. He hadn’t had the best crew for the mission since his own Crows had been distanced from him recently, but he had still managed to pull it off. He was glad that despite Wylan having to do work with the Merchant Council he was able to provide Kaz with the firepower that he needed to take down the other Barrel Boss. If Kaz had to actually rely on the other explosives expert that he had under his employ then nothing would have gone nearly as well as it did.
He turned slightly when he heard the huffing and puffing of the crew that he had assembled for the job. “Rotty,” he nodded his head towards the other man.
“Boss,” the man in question gasped, bracing himself on his legs. Kaz felt a stir of discontentment at how exhausted his crew already was after such a small heist. It wasn’t like when he had infiltrated the Ice Court, or even some of the smaller jobs that the Crows had to do when they were trying to take down Rollins and Van Eck. Still, he was making due with what he had.
“Well done,” Kaz rasped. He was trying to improve morale and loyalty out of something other than fear like Nina had suggested so that he was less likely to have people that were willing to sell him out now that he was in charge of his own group. After all, what was fear of him if someone was actually torturing one of his men? If they knew that he cared for them in some capacity and would do work to avenge them or get them back, then they would be less likely to spill secrets. He still struggled with the idea that any of the Dregs could be as important as his Crows were, but Nina was right when it came to the inspiring loyalty part.
Roeder and Rotty glanced at each other, both smiling and clapping each other on the back. They were talking in hushed whispers about the praise that they had just received but Kaz could still hear it clearly from where he was standing a few feet away from them. It was infuriating to hear what felt almost like gossip when he was well within earshot, especially when one of the men that was doing it was supposed to be his new spider.
“Make sure that you get back to the Slat before the Stadwatch find out what we did to this place,” he called. He turned on his heel and began to march down the muddy path so that he could get to the trail he had taken to get there. He knew that despite the fact that he was being friendlier with his lackeys, they knew that they weren’t to follow him unless they were explicitly told to.
He was now known for being fair and good to the people that worked for him, but absolutely ruthless to the point of being borderline cruel to those that tried to hurt him or his Crows. More was known about him than had been when he was nine and wandering around the streets while stealing every stray kruge and watch that he could. People didn’t know the exact relationship that he had with the five people that slept in the same room as him and that he took on all of his most lucrative jobs, but they knew that they were close. Most also understood that Inej was the soul of his little operation and he was more lenient in the punishments that he gave when she was around. That meant that he had to deal with more people coming after him when the Wraith as docked in Fifth Harbor. He had even had a few people try to use her being there against him, until she had stabbed the first man in the heart that she had since the Van Eck job. She never lost her ruthlessness and she had never become less dangerous, she just spent less time using it for what Kaz wanted and more time using it for herself.
Kaz felt his heart ache in his chest as he thought about her. The only time that they really got to see each other for longer than a week at a time was during the winter, when the waters got perilous enough that she didn’t feel comfortable bringing her crew out sailing. The slave trade also died down in the winter months for Ravka and Fjerda because it was harder to find vulnerable young people to take when the world was white with snow. It was just barely edging into late spring, which meant that she was going to be on the longest of her trips because the most resources were available to her at that time. He didn’t know how long she would be away and where she would be docking to get the rest of her things when they needed to restock next, but the loss of her next to him in bed felt like it was going to last forever.
Matthias and Nina had returned to the woods of Tsibeya after a brief excursion to Os Alta so that Nina could work with the Heartrenders and Fabrikators that might be able to give her some answers about her new powers. They were still trying to figure out what the parem had done to her body and what her life would look like now that she had come out on the other side. It was slow going work that required her to go back to Os Alta so that she could talk with Kuwei about it often, which meant that she was also away from their little bubble of safety. She usually brought Matthias with her and the two of them would spend the bits of extra time that they had while waiting for their boat to bring them back exploring the forests near Fjerda without crossing the border. According to Matthias, they were looking for the wolf that he had been partnered with back when he was a druskelle. Kaz would have once dismissed what they were doing as childish and sentimental, but he knew what he would do to be able to get even a piece of his life before Ketterdam back.
Wylan and Jesper were only away for the weekend. They had business to attend to at one of the farms on the very edge of the city that would take them all day and made it too difficult for them to come back even to the Van Eck mansion. It wasn’t something that they did very often even if Wylan tried to present himself as an upstanding citizen that didn’t make bombs for a notorious crime boss on the weekend. Most people in the Barrel knew that he had been or was involved with Kaz, but no one was stupid enough to open their mouth where dangerous people might be listening. Jesper went wherever Wylan went, which Kaz was only okay with because of the near-assassination attempt that had happened not long after word had gotten out about how important they all were to each other.
Needless to say, the home that Kaz was going to return to would be a lonely one. They had laid off most of the staff so that they had to deal with less people on the regular, which was a necessity for them all. That meant that the servants quarters were usually mostly empty except for the four people that they had kept on. Marya kept to her wing of the house where she wasn’t disturbed unless she wanted company. Kaz had his portion of the house where he did work, though never official business, and it was usually bursting with partners. Today it would be empty.
He tilted his face up when he realized that the bright light of the full moon had been sapped suddenly from the earth around him. For a moment, he was very concerned that it had something to do with Grisha. There were tales from one side of Ravka that the tides used to be linked to the moon when people still worshipped the old gods. After everything that he had seen, he wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that someone could move the heavenly bodies to their own will.
It ended up being the far more likely reason, rather than a Grisha loaded up on the dangerous drug they had worked so hard to keep away from every government. Clouds had rolled in off the coast, where they had become loaded and burdened with sea water, so that they were coating the sky in a thick black blanket.
Kaz growled, low in the back of his already hoarse throat, as he pulled the lapels of his jacket up around his neck. He pushed his hat down further onto his head so that it would cover more of his hair and then kept on. He had strained himself too much that night when he was helping get his team into place and the pressure change from the storm had made his leg begin to ache something fierce, so he couldn’t press on as quickly as he wanted to. He was going to have to keep the steady pace that he had set back when he had left the burning wreckage of their job in his wake, even if it meant getting caught out in the rain.
Somehow, the first drop that fell trickled right down his neck. It landed just where his hair stopped and ran all the way down the length of his spine. He stopped walking and leaned heavily on the cane in his hand as he tried to fight back the sensation of bloated, pruned fingers pushing and grabbing at every part of his body. He tried desperately to focus on the hard ground beneath his feet and the fact that he was so much larger than he had been back when all of that happened.
It didn’t work.
His mind dragged him back to the night that he had woken up, fully woken up without the haze of fever hanging over him like a death shroud, on the Reaper’s Barge. He could remember the smell that had dripped through the air, the smell of bodies being burned so that the ashes could be disposed of in a place that wouldn’t bother anyone. He could remember the smell of rot and seawater that had soaked into his pores and coated his mouth. He could remember the feeling of his brother’s cheek beneath his finger as his hand gilded over the sweat-and-water soaked skin, bumping over each of the pocks that had been created from their illness.
Worst of all, he could remember the feeling of suffocating beneath the bodies of the plague-dead when the barge tipped too far in one direction and sent him toppling beneath a pile. He had gasped for breath and gotten only seawater and the stink of rot in return for it. He had sobbed until his eyes were free of tears and his chest ached something fierce, but no one heard it and no one ever would.
Kaz was only half-aware of what his body was doing in the present. He knew that his feet were on the ground and that his legs were shaking slightly, but he didn’t know if that was because of the strain he was putting onto the weaker one or because of the fear threading through his veins. His mind was a rushing mix of his own heartbeat and the screams that had torn through his throat for his bother to come back and save him from whatever nightmare the fever had caused him.
Most of all, he was aware that he was wet. He didn’t know how long he had been standing in one spot on the path that only he knew about with nothing but the memories of the worst time in his life to keep him company, but he was thoroughly soaked. His clothing was clinging to his body and felt as though it was suffocating him. It was pulling at every part of his form and trying to drag him down into the misery that would end in his death.
He forced himself to take a step forward.
He took another, and then another, before he was finally walking. The pain of his leg kept him grounded enough that the tides of the ocean were at bay so that he could tell which place to turn. He was still hearing his own voice echoing out over the vast nothingness that was the surrounding harbor. He could hear the sound of bodies popping when the gasses that had built up in their guts after their death finally got too much for the corpse to handle. He could smell the rot and the death and the plague like it was burned forever into his nose.
His hands fumbled as he got the lock on the front gate open with the key that he kept around his neck. He was numb from the cold and shaking with the memories of what true pain felt like.
By the time that he got up to the front door that would lead into the home that he had built with his own two hands, the one that he had secured for the people that had wormed their way under his skin to keep his heart beating, his hands were shaking too badly to be of much use. He grasped the key so tightly in his hand that he heard the leather of his gloves creaking dangerously. Something in the far back of his brain, the man that he had to let go when he realized that the overwhelming love he had for his partners was not something that was going to go away, told him that he had probably ruined them.
The wind was beginning to howl as it ripped over the rooves of Ketterdam. The voices of the dead, the dead that Kaz should have been a part of, came screaming at him as he sank down on his front step. He was crying now but he could barely tell what was a tear and what was the spray of the sea and his own flailing as he used his brother’s dead body as a way to save himself.
He was selfish, he was cruel, he was unworthy of love, he was a bad luck token, he was a monster.
The voices of the dead barraged him with their warnings and their condemnations of him and what they had seen him do. Sometimes it was the mother that he had never gotten to meet, sometimes it was the father that had died and started it all, and sometimes it was the brother that had been so foolish. Mostly it was the people that Kaz had to kill so that he could build his life, the people that he did feel guilt over his ruthlessness for.
His body hurt and his mind was screaming but there was nothing that he could do. He refused to let himself pass out the same way that he had in the prisoner carriage back when they were breaking into the Ice Court or in that freezing river. He was certain that if he gave up now, if he gave into the shards of water that were piercing into his bones, then he would never be able to come back.
But now he had something that he had to fight for, even if they deserved better than him. Inej would be furious if she found out that he had succumbed to the water swirling around his body without her being present to snap him out of it. Wylan and Jesper would never forgive themselves for not being there when he died. Matthias and Nina had already lost so much and faced so much death, they didn’t deserve any more. They had all given up almost every hope that they had of a shiny future so that they could be with him and he knew what kind of a sacrifice that was.
So instead of letting himself fall back into the comforting arms of the blackness that was pulling at the back of his mind, he fought and stayed in the blinding white cold. He shivered and held his body despite how fragile it felt, he screamed and sucked in the breathe that his muscles needed to live. He waited for them.
The storm raged on, as did Kaz’s mind. Eventually he had begun to think that the others weren’t going to save him. Inej wouldn’t be there to pull him up out of the waters like she had been when they were in the prison carriage. Wylan wouldn’t be there to talk practicality into his mind. Nina wouldn’t be there to soothe his heart with her hand even without her powers. Matthias wouldn’t be able to bring the grounding rage into his gut by poking just the right buttons. Jesper wouldn’t be there with his foolish smile and devious cunning. None of them were coming for Kaz because he didn’t deserve to be forgiven after the monster that he had been formed into.
He barely registered it when a pair of strong hands slipped underneath his armpits and pulled him into a standing position. He heard the sound of a lock slipping open, though he couldn’t feel his lockpicks against the slits in his gloves. The door creaked as it opened again and his mind chose to focus on whether or not it was a good think to have something that would alert them to the presence of others in their home.
“What’s going on?” he heard the voice of the man that he had been thinking of before everything had happened rush through his mind. It cut through the voices that the wind was bringing with them and the rushing of the water against his ears.
“Wylan?” he mumbled. His lips felt almost as though they were frozen together because of how cold he was. He realized that his entire body was quivering despite the warm hand that was resting on his arms.
Several footsteps echoed through the lofty room that he had stumbled into with the help of whoever had helped him stand up. He felt a pair of large, calloused hands brush across his face. The callouses were on the tips of the forefingers and the palms, not across the entire finger, so he knew that it wasn’t Matthias. Even just assessing that his partners were around him served to bring him the rest of the way out of the panic that was clinging to the bottoms of his pants like rainwater.
“Jesper,” he breathed as he collapsed forward. His body felt so weak and he was so cold, all he wanted was the safety of the people that loved him and for the cold to be gone. He hated the cold, it made his body and his mind ache.
“Hey baby,” Jesper whispered. He moved them over to the lounge that was arranged on the left side of the hall and sat Kaz down. He pressed a little kiss to the side of the other man’s face before he moved away from him. When Kaz let out a gasp of panic, scared that he was going to be left alone with the ghosts that had quieted but not entirely gone, the other man quickly explained himself. “I’m just getting you out of these clothes, sweetheart, I promise I’m not going anywhere.”
Another body moved closer to him and he turned his head to see Inej. He didn’t know when she had gotten back or why, but she didn’t look pale and sallow like she had when she was hurt so he assumed that she was back for a very important reason. “We’re not going to leave you Kaz, not ever,” she promised as her talented fingers began to weave their way through his hair. He realized after a moment that she was undoing snarls and riding it of the dripping water so that it would stop slithering down his back.
“I got some clean clothes, Matthias has the blanket,” Nina said as she bustled into the room. She sat the clothing down in Inej’s lap and then wrapped a towel around Kaz’s head. She made sure that she wasn’t covering his face with the fabric as she wiped away every single drip and drop of water. Jesper worked with her so that she could towel off Kaz’s body when he revealed it by shedding the other man of his soaked clothing.
It felt almost indecent, being completely naked while in the front room of their grand mansion, with all of his partners gathered around him. His darkest secrets were on display for anyone to see, the body that he had been born with that didn’t quite fit, the scars that had come from years of life with a gang, the softness that had developed after being coddled by his loves. He was about to say something about it but his entire form convulsed and his teeth chattered too loudly for him to get the words out.
“Shh, shh, we’re here,” Inej promised as she kissed the side of his face. She and Nina easily got him into a new pair of smalls and into another undershirt, though he noted absently that it wasn’t the binding kind. He noticed that the pajamas that he was stepping into were the woolen ones that he used when the nights were so cold that he wouldn’t be able to sleep without an ache if he didn’t use them. Matthias then swooped in with a blanket, using it to bring him away from the now soaked bench he had been on before.
Kaz looked down at the fold closest to his shoulder. He realized that it was the special blanket Nina had made for Matthias when they had gotten married. The inside was a set of furs from squirrels native to Fjerda sewn onto a thick cotton backing that was woven so that it made a flannel texture, that way both sides of it were pleasant to cuddle up in and kept the wearer warm.
He was brought up to the master bedroom that had the huge bed they could all fit in and then placed down in the center. He was left alone only long enough for the rest of his partners to hurry out of their semi-wet clothing and into something dry before they joined him. Matthias and Nina were on one side while Inej and Jesper were on the other, which felt almost as though they were representing the first people that he had fallen in love with and the last.
He glanced up and startled slightly when he saw Wylan walk in while clutching a mug of tea. “They got you in something dry, that’s good. Now I want you to drink this.”
“What is it?” he asked, trying to ignore the sore feeling that his throat was already beginning to take on. He must have been screaming in the storm, or maybe he had been crying.
“Ginger mint tea with lemon and honey,” the other man replied as he settled himself down at Kaz’s feet. He was wrapped up in his favorite shawl and had his feet tucked under him to keep warm, so he looked very domestic and cozy. Kaz liked being able to feel warm.
“I don’t like honey,” he groused as he looked down into the steam. It was warming up his hands, which was when he noticed that they had taken his gloves off and he hadn’t even registered it. Their bodies were ones that he knew well, that he trusted, and that held rapidly beating hearts.
“I know you don’t like honey. I’m trying to stop you from getting pneumonia, you podge. Now will you drink it?” Wylan chastised, sounding every bit like Marya did when they came back black and blue with new bruises.
He didn’t fight it anymore, but it felt good to recede back into the blackness. This time it promised him gentle hands and loving words, kisses and mugs of tea and favorite blankets draped over his shoulders. He drank the too-sweet tea and cuddled into the bodies that were closest to him, suffocating under their love and glad for it.

Found Families and Why We Love Them
Dominic Toretto once said "I don’t have friends, I got family" with that in mind, that will be our intro for today! Although we find that iconic line cheesy as cheese, the audience loves a great found-family setup.
Something about how a bunch of misfits and inconsiderate douchebags developing to be a family of their own in spite of their quirkiness and tragic backgrounds makes us love them more than the typical and already functional groups. Like most families, there is the father, the mother, and the child. The rest is kind of subjective.
I've talked a little bit about actual families via [The Addams Family] but I think Found Families are a different breed. Let's discuss that and explain why we love them so much~
Tumblr media
- Crows Never Forget -
While conversing with a friend I've met on Tumblr. My friend suggested that I should watch the show < Shadow and Bone > based on the Grisha Trilogy by [Leigh Bardugo] The story mainly follows Alina Starkov who lives in a world divided by the haunting dark cloud placed at the center of the three counties known as; The Fold.
Aside from the main plot you can already guess if you know enough fiction. The show features a merry band of dangerous outcasts. The Six of Crows from Ketterdam. Led by the cunning leader; Kaz "Dirty Hands" Brekker.
Tumblr media
The team is supported by, Inej Ghafa The Assassin, Nina Zenik The Heartrender, Jesper Fahey The Sharpshooter, Matthias Helvar The Convict, and Wylan Van Eck The Runaway. Like every group that shares this type of beat. The teammates do not trust one another and are only united for the cause.
This will develop as the series goes on and their trust will change from strangers to allies to family beneath the backdrop of a sinfully cut-throat and exciting city. While the series only showed Five of the Six so far. I've grown very quickly to love this group for their chemistry and their respective motivations to stay as a team.
Tumblr media
What's so interesting to watch is, despite how typical this trope is. I still couldn't keep my eyes off this concept. It's so much fun to see the Six interact even though for now, it's just Kaz, Inej, and Jesper (also, The Goat; Milo) planning a heist to kidnap our heroine. On the other end of the world, we learn about Matthias and Nina. The Convict and The Witch (Matthias's words, not mine)
Dysfunctional groups like these feel very human. They don't act like they care for the world or for one another but instead, grow in the process.
Similarly, another dysfunctional group called < The Guardians of The Galaxy > shares the same vibes as the Six. Their talent is great but it's their destructive tendencies or personal vendettas that make them less like heroes. Rather, they are people who just so happened to be doing heroics.
Tumblr media
- Where is your Supervisor? -
Part of the trick in making fun found families is the will to condense the group down to about four or three characters. In most Shonen manga/ anime, the main character (eg, Naruto) is often supported by a lancer character (eg, Sasuke) and the heart (eg, Sakura) There is also the mentor/senior (eg, Kakashi) and it will always be these four. Other examples like Harry (Potter) and Co are good samples of the main trio with a mentor (Hagrid).
It's rare that we find trios with no mentor figure. Such is the case of another show I recently watched, < Lockwood and Co > based on the book series by [Jonathan Stroud] For a quick summary, Lockwood is set in London with one big exception. The city/ world at large is haunted by lethal ghosts (AKA The Problem) and only kids can sense them. Therefore, fight them.
Tumblr media
The main cast consists of Anthony Lockwood, the cool and fearless badass gentleman who is strongest with Sight. George Karim, an all-rounder but a highly talented Researcher. Finally, our main character, Lucy Carlyle. An incredibly talented girl who's the most gifted with Hearing and Touch. Unlike the other agencies which are by the book and led by a Supervisor (an adult). Lockwood is purely independent but is unfortunately small and always in trouble with the law due to their incredibly dangerous methods.
Still, they are the best at what they do. Hunting ghosts while solving the bigger mystery behind The Problem. Despite their terrible coordination, the team has proven themselves to be better and far more personal with the cases they crack. Making it less like a job.
They are reminders that less is better. The cast plays the role of Hero, Lancer, and Heart very well and their chemistry is great and funny. Anthony and Lucy will sometimes bud heads, George will do his own thing making two of his partners incredibly proud and, you might see some tender/real moments between them.
Tumblr media
Lockwood also removes the typical hero's journey of losing a mentor figure and instead makes the characters each other's mentors. The team relies on one other with their lives to survive every mission and navigate through life as a whole.
It felt more organic for them to grow together because there's a sense for when an adult shares a piece of advice (no matter how good it is) feels very smug and dull. The characters feel like actual teens because the setting for the agency sounds like something actual teens will do. Break the rules and do right for the fun or for some deep-rooted conspiracy that the world has yet to know.
Tumblr media
- You Chose The Wrong Side! -
From the dysfunctional groups like the Six or the Guardians to the power of Three. There is one other interesting layer to the Found Family troupe. The Disbanded Found Family.
While most stories tell of how the team came to be, rare stories tell of how they split off and are no longer on speaking terms. For a while, The MCU's Avengers were at war with one another during < Captain America; Civil War > With Steve Rogers and Tony Stark budding heads harshly over the Sokovia Accords.
Seeing a well-rounded team break up is difficult for the characters and the audience because. For all the disagreements they had with one another, they've developed along the way to be close like a family. Seeing them split is like watching a divorce happening on screen and it's heartbreaking and sometimes a little bit awesome because you've got the best of the best competing to declare their superiority.
Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the best examples I have seen is through < Kuroko No Baskue > where our main character; Tetsuya Kuroko entered High School and vowed to defeat/ beat some sense to his Former Junior High School Basketball Team with his newfound team; Seirin High
Kuroko's former team is famously known as The Generation of Miracles; an elite team of young talents that excel on the court, thus making them prodigies of their generation.
The Miracles consist of; Daiki Aomine (The Power Forward Beast), Shintarō Midorima (The Star Shooter), Atsushi Murasakibara (The Ultimate Center), Seijūrō Akashi (The Emperor's Eye) and Ryōta Kise (The Perfect Copycat) From the little we have seen, the team is passionate about the sport they play and they share a very brotherly relationship with one another.
Tumblr media
As the series develops, we learn more about their personal relationships with Kuroko and with each other. We see the infighting between them and we learn about how their respective egos build. We learn about their vow during graduation and we get to see them reunited once again.
The series as a whole function in two ways. Kuroko develops new relationships with his new team and Kuroko confronts his old team to mend their relationship. It tackles the dysfunctional team setup at its lowest state and rekindles the flame for the respective parties to be healed. Also, it's really cool to see such a colorful cast together.
Tumblr media
- I Didn't Pick The Damn Team! -
With that said, it's a wonder for why Found Families are a timeless troupe no matter the settings. But, like how Amanda Waller sets up Task Force X/ The Suicide Squad. Sometimes it's not by choice and it always starts out bumpy.
What I find fun in teams like the ones mentioned is that they share a common language in spite of their unique flavors. The teams are built on trust, a common goal, and the willingness to open up. For all the gimmicks, the core values stay the same.
Tumblr media
We, the audience love a good Found Family because in an indirect way. We wanted a group like that. We longed to have a group that we can call family but, the reality of it all is. It's really up to how the characters interact with one another.
Every circle is different and no matter the status or the seasons. All are maintained by the will to reach out. It's something I hope to use for my own team in the process. To have [Them be there for you, Cause you're there for Them too]
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading

5k Followers Celebration!
Thank you all so much for five thousand followers! I feel like I keep saying this, but I never thought this would really happen. Regular requests are also now open, but celebration themed requests will have priority in earlier postings. I am so grateful to all of you, so let's have some fun!
Celebration will close on August 23rd.
Tumblr media
Prompt List
I'm bringing back the prompt list from the 3k celebration, now with ten new prompts! Simply state a character and a prompt or two, and I'll give you a fic. Prompt list linked here.
Personalized Drabbles
It's time for the classic! These have been pretty well liked in the past few events, so you know we had to do them again. State a character and give some descriptions of yourself, such as personality and what you like to do in your free time, and I'll give you 300-500 words.
Journal Entries
We have two options for this:
Tell me a fandom or a character and I'll give you an original idea for a fic that I have yet to write (ex. I have a ton of soulmate AUs for different characters that I would love to wax on about)
Shorter, more specific headcanons for a given character and situation (ex. you've just seen Pride and Prejudice (2005) and want to know Inej Ghafa's thoughts on the subject)
Friends Bonus
You've known me for too long, please get something out of it! Besties can get as many of the following as they want:
Character ships (give me a fandom, I'm telling you which character I think suits you best + a little blurb just because)
Five song playlist (no I will not stop pushing my terrible taste in music agenda, these will be specifically targeting your vibe)
CYM as anything (anyone can send these, not just moots)
Rec for rec (give me a book/tv show/movie you enjoy and I'll tell you one I think you'll enjoy as well)
tagging some but not all of the besties below the cut:
@thatfangirl42, @hiya-its-amber, @quill-of-a-sparrow, @thereagles, @retvenkos, @musicallisto, @amortensie, @zaypay, @swanimagines, @starlit-epiphany, @nocturnal-theater-kid, @spideyanakin, @justasimphere, @mystic-writings, @neewtmas, @mxltifxnd0m, @dandilicn, @ellobruv, @pinkangelinternet, and AU anon + 💫anon whoever you are

EST|20+|She/Her
Hello! My name is Bonnibel, I'm looking for an array of things right now. However, before delving into anything roleplay based I want to talk about the kind of people I'm looking for! I'm looking for LONG-TERM roleplayers, possibly open for multi-musing and having different roleplays. I'm looking only for 20+ roleplayers who are comfortable with NSFW subjects! Preferably writing Semi-lit to Adv-Lit
I'm looking for people who are happy to make moodboards, spotify playlist, headcanons, and worldbuild with me; this can be a make or break for me! I'm partial to writing female characters, I love to double; when it comes to doubling or oc x oc I am more than happy to play male characters! And finally I am NOT comfortable with MxM but can attempt FxF though I might not be perfect with it as I mostly just do FxM!
Getting into what I'm into I'll write the following fandoms I'm looking for and what characters I'm looking to have against my oc! Bolded characters are my preferred, and bolded fandoms is what I'm looking for the most
(P.S. I'm VERY picky with cc x cc, but certain fandoms I'm more than happy to just ask)
Criminal Minds: Spencer Reid or Aaron Hotchner
I can write: Aaron Hotchner, Derek Morgan, Jennifer Jareau, Emily Prentiss, Matthew Simmons
Peaky Blinders: Michael Gray
I can write: Thomas Shelby, Arthur Shelby, Ada Shelby, May Carleton
Alice in Borderlands: Shuntaro Chishiya
I can write: Ryohei Arisu, Suguru Niragi, Kuina, Daikichi Karube, Ann, Takeru "Hatter" Danma,
Harry Potter: The Weasley Twins
I can write: Just ask LMAO, again the list is much too long
RWBY OG SERIES: Qrow Branwen or Lie Ren
I can write: Anyone just ask!

Shadow and Bone: Matthias Helvar or Nikolai Lantsov
I can write: Alina Starkov, Kaz Brekker, General Kirigan, Genya Safin, Inej Ghafa, Tolya Yul-bataar

Note
Hi again! So I’ve had an idea for a Star Wars rebels fic! It’s a long one so I apologies in advance! Also, I’m not sure whether you’ll feel comfortable doing it, if not, no worries at all! But either way, thank you for taking the time to read this request!
Are you familiar with the character Inej Ghafa from the Six of Crows books, and the recent Shadow and Bone series on Netflix? (Still heartbroken that it has been cancelled!)
So, I was thinking that reader is a similar to Sabine and Ezra, and became a member of their crew a year or so before Ezra joined. She is quiet, reserved and very stealthy, able to sneak around the ship without anyone detecting her, Kanan would struggle without his connection to the force. Also, she isn’t force sensitive! She is often used as a spy by the ghost grew, using her acrobatic and stealth skills.
I was thinking if fem!reader shares a background to inej, perhaps she grew in in a travelling circus and possessed acrobatic skills, which caught the eye of slavers when she was young. She was taken from her home, and sold to slavers on Tatooine. Maybe the hutts employ her and she carries out some nefarious jobs whilst working for them, perhaps running into the rebels as some point, who offer her a way out. Maybe reluctant at first (she didn’t want to be doing such work forever) she left with them. The only problem was, the hutts searched for her relentlessly, not wanting to lose there most efficient spy, though Hera and Kanan assure her that she will never go back there. She stays with them for a year or so, before running into a band of slavers when on a mission. The others are unable to help her, and she end up back in the hands of the hutts. Weeks passand she looses faith in ever seeing them again, thinking that they have given up on finding her.
Within the weeks of her capture, the rebels work tirelessly to find a lead on their missing Spector, and along the way pick up Ezra. In the initial weeks of Ezra being there, word reached the rebels of reader being back with the hutts, and then demanding a vast sum of money in order to pay off her indenture and set her free.
Luckily they break her out, and she is returned home, but the the fear of going back there haunts her constantly. Additionally, the thought of them picking up another member of their crew whilst she was away (maybe she isn’t the nicest to Ezra when she gets back which surprises the others as she was so kind before), further unsettles her as whilst she is great fun and happy to be back, it makes her question her place. Though they reassure her that they love her, and she discovers that Ezra is nice enough and grows to him!
Again, absolutely fine if you are unable to do this, I know this is a bit more of a mature subject to write about, but slavery is common in the Star Wars universe, and I’m oretry sure Hera touches on it at some point when lando hands her over to Azmorigan (I think that was who it was) Anyway, thank you so much! Xx
it took a minute, but here it is!!
