hey! i just constantly review my vocab + grammar and try to read webtoons occasionally (i love the mystic messenger webtoon lmfao, i was and still am a big fan of the game). i also occasionally watch kdramas/youtube videos without subtitles, or just with korean subtitles

september 28th, 2019 | went to denmark for the international bsp (unesco baltic sea project) camp and met a german boy there who i've been talking to ever since. so i thought—why not? and that's how i've started learning german.

the photo on the left is from sweden, not from denmark though.

also lately i've been very into red-white-black aesthetic, if you can't tell.

#13: What color is your water bottle?

Okay, I don’t actually keep a water bottle since I’m at home now and I can just get easy access to water, but I do have this spare water bottle that I’m hoping to use in college and it’s a marbled color! It’s so pretty and I hope to use it more often.

#14: Have you ever dyed your hair/would you ever want to?

I’ve never really considered it before and I think I’d much rather prefer highlights in my hair or maybe a balayage style. I have dark hair and it’s kind of difficult to pull off lighter hair colors that’d thoroughly match my skin tone and also I don’t really want to stand out so, nope, I don’t think so!

#23: How long have you been friends with your longest friend for?

Oh wow, whenever it comes to the topic of friendship, I always get myself in a bit of a crisis since I’ve drifted away from many of my friends and I don’t really have that one person who I can call my best friend. However, I do have this one sweet online friend that I met when I was twelve and we still talk up to this day! So, that’s been around eight years which is crazy. We’ve basically grown up together like she’s a senior this year and she’s so sweet and I’m grateful for her! She’s also really excited that we’re starting college the same year and navigating through the ups and downs together.

1) Would you rather spend an evening at home with your family/by yourself or go out with friends?

Deffo staying in!

2) What's your favourite line from a book you've read? If you don't have one, what's one of the first books you remember reading?

this is lowkey messed up but: "Terrible place – dangerous work – other day – five children – mother – tall lady, eating sandwiches – forgot the arch – crash – knock – children look round – mother's head off – sandwich in her hand – no mouth to put it in – head of family off – shocking, shocking.-” said by Alfred Jingle from Pickwick papers. idk y this, whilst horrifying, made me snort. (although knowing alfred he was probably lying)

3) What language do you usually dream in? What language feels like home to you?

English and english but somali and certain arabic dialects always instil familiarity

4) When you feel sad out of the blue, what do you do to feel better?

depends on how sad i am; if it’s mild I go off to organise stuff or tidy. i usually forget whatever it was fast. if it’s a bit more serious my go-to is prayer and qur’an.

5) What did you want to be as a child when you grow up, what do you want to be now?

A writer loll. hmm although i am happy with the path im on at the moment alhamdulillah i haven’t completely given up the writer stuff. i also hope i may one day be able to make/collaborate on making films.

6) What place do you really want to visit? Can be a city, a country, a region or even a continent, doesn't matter.

if we’re talking tourism/exploration it’s gotta be japan. i also really want to go back home to somalia/kenya for a bit. Makkah/Madinah are my ultimate lifetime goals too.

7) Are you more of a big city, small town or country side person? Why?

hmm if i had to choose it’s gonna have to be the countryside (but i’d be walking to the town regularly ¬ ¬) i just love the solitude and calm and how time slows down- i really feel like i’d be able to get a grip

8) Have you ever seen the milky way with your own eyes?

nope but i get to hear my mum go on about how she did as a kid back home and how trash the night skies are here in the uk and she’s right but like that barely visible orion constellation is all i got rn 😔 (on that note, the north star is v bright tonight)

9) Do you have a green thumb? What was your first plant? Is it still alive?

i was convinced absolutely not when i killed 3 seperate cacti but now that the garden isn’t completely a screw up i guess i do. the first thing i planted was celery and they never had a chance lol- the cats shat on/dug them all up

10) What's your favourite historical era? Can be in any part of the world (i know academia is very eurocentric)

edo japan are vibes fr but idk if it’s my favourite favorite. spain in the Islamic golden age takes the cake with this one.

Hey katrina!!!!! How have you been

hi nesi! i’ve been alright!! work has been taking up a lot of my time and i’m very tired, which is why i haven’t been as active as i’d like for the past couple months. you’re welcome to read my last life update, if you haven’t already, and i guess i’ll be adding onto that here in this reply:

for my first job, i’ve reduced my working hours a bit! we’re finally getting some new employees, and i’ve been training them and helping them get more acquainted with our company. i’ve taken on more responsibilities as well. in a way, i’m kind of a temporary manager on my managers’ days off, which is pretty cool! :D

for my second job, i’ve finally started substitute teaching! i now understand the struggle of mispronouncing names that aren’t easy to pronounce when doing attendance, haha. it’s also difficult to get the whole class to be quiet and pay attention, but i’m especially grateful for the students who are well-behaved. i’ll be taking some time to regroup, reflect, and think of what i can do to be better. if there’s anyone out there with teaching experience, please feel free to give me some advice – it will be greatly appreciated!

as for other things:

i’m still working on my composition that i started in november. i know i meant to finish by christmas, but life happens and that’s okay!

i almost got sick a couple times, but thanks to a combination of many home remedies, i’m okay now ^_^ the key is to TAKE ACTION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (i highly recommend gargling a cup of warm salt water) when you start feeling something funny towards the top of your throat!! once that feeling gets deeper, it’s too late.

i recently finished reading american panda by gloria chao! it’s an accurate representation of how many asian americans grow up, dealing with the pressure of having to do well in school and meet your parents’ expectations, as well as balancing two different cultures and feeling like you don’t quite fit into either one. it’s the kind of book that i wish was around when i was in high school – i could really relate to the main character, and a lot of her experiences resonated with me. it’s a good book, and i recommend checking it out!

i’m still watching season 4 of boku no hero academia, and i’m excited for the next arc!

i’m also watching season 4 of haikyuu!! i’ve been enjoying it a lot so far, and i really love the new opening and ending songs. i look forward to learning more about the new characters, especially miya atsumu…he seems very intriguing and cute.

still bopping to stray kids, as per usual. i wish i could go to one of their concerts since they’re touring in the usa right now, but i can’t :(

also been listening to more japanese music lately! thanks hen @lavietudier for the recs, ahaha. “spacecraft” by sui sui duck ft. mako and “1LDK” by reol are two of my current favorite songs!

tl;dr: ya girl is tired, but work is going pretty well! music is always on my mind, and i watch anime and read in my free time :’)

13 - What has been your favourite class you’ve taken?

It’s going to have to be the digital media production class I am currently taking WHICH HAS BEEN RUDELY INTERUPPTED and I don’t think it will be able to go online sooooo... I don’t even know if I’ll be able to continue it, especially since it involves a group film assignment.

24 - Best book you’ve had to read for a course?

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. It was for my sci-fi and fantasy class. It’s a fantasy graphic novel and I think it’s the quirkiest graphic novel I have ever read and I highly recommend it.

32 - What is an area of your subject you wish your university taught but doesn’t?

Technically, my University does teach this but not on the campus I am currently at. I would love to learn more about media production and design and whatnot but they teach it in another city so I can’t do that unless I move which isn’t going to happen until I graduate. Maybe it will be a post-grad venture for me when I’ve finished my bachelors degree.

How are mochi & snoopy doing??

good!! snoopy was v mad at us for days bc we had to trim his nails, which involves picking him up (he hates being picked up and gets V MAD whenever we do so we never pick him up unless we absolutely have to) - he wouldn’t look at us and wouldn’t accept pets or even treats from us which HURT lmfao but we’re all good now!! mochi is good and being the same sweet lil baby as always, though she keeps littering outside her designated area which is not so great :(

1. What is your favourite period of history to learn about?

The Japanese Sengoku period!! I really like the stories of the shogunate and I have a book on Tokugawa Ieyasu that I have yet to read

and also partially bcs I used to play Ikemen Sengoku ahahaha

10. If you could be fluent in three languages, which would you choose?

1. Malay, my mother tongue. I feel like I missed out on learning it and being able to speak it properly :(

2. Japanese, so that I can read and understand their literature

3. Dutch, bcs i like how it sounds

14. If you were a season and a type of weather, what would you be?

season: I think I'd be autumn. I love the warm red tones

weather: if I were type of weather I'd probably be warm and sunny ☀️ bcs somehow body temp especially my hands are warmer than usual compared to others

but if we're talking about favourites then it's autumn and cold weather
