“How do you know?! How can - we shouldn’t have done -”

“Michelle,” Ned pleads, his hands up in surrender. “It was the only way to save him.”

“It was the wrong spell!”

Ned pauses, his brows higher than MJ has seen them in years before he concedes.

“Okay, so yes, it was the wrong spell but I was panicked! It’s going to wear off -”

“You know girls don’t actually have germs, right?” MJ asks, looking entirely unimpressed with his behaviour.

In Peter’s defence, she’s still the loveliest thing his twenty five year old eyes have ever seen and now she has red hair and she’s telling him he just needs to hold her hand and pretend to be her boyfriend for the evening like it’s no big deal? Like she has no idea she’s plagued all his dreams since he was fifteen and he’s thought about more than just holding her hand in the dim light of his bedroom.

Of course, she thinks he should be able to stand next to her and not tell her he was hopelessly in love with her during high school even though she spoke to him all of two times. Obviously, pretending to be her boyfriend for the night despite the way she just casually told him she’s known he was Spider-Man since the ninth grade is just not that big of a deal.

“Yeah,” he scoffs, taking her hand and pretending like his heart isn’t trying to break through his ribs.

“I don’t know what was going on in those nerdy comics you used to read, Parker,” MJ replies, fixing her shirt before she takes a deep breath. Peter’s not sure why she’s so nervous about this holiday party, but he’s not excited to find out.
