Awww....Tessa! 😭😩 This is so sad.... Poor Tom. 😔 I feel bad for Tom and the entire family. I knew it was coming, but I just didn't think it would be this soon. 🥺 Having lost 2 family pet dogs to death in my lifetime, I can honestly say that losing a beloved family pet is gut-wrenching... 😢 They really do become one of the family. Shoot...sometimes I've cried harder over the death of my dog than the death of some family members. 👀
I hope Tom gets some to rest and relax while dealing with this grief, but he's in the middle of a FYC campaign and prepping for the R&J play, so it might be difficult for him to find time to really process everything. Maybe when all of the work is over he'll have a bit more time to just take a mini break before stating to prep for SM4 filming. 🙏🏾
Losing a family member, because that's what our pets are, is so beyond heartbreaking, but the fact that Tom and Harry were in New York while Sam is on a vacation with his girlfriend makes my heart ache for them even more, though they all cherished her so much not just her last months since her health took a turn but her entire life. <3

I also meant to mention Dylan O'brien in my last ask post.
He's another millennial actor that was so promising, and I think he would have really gone far had he not had that tragic accident on set of his Maze Runner movie. 😥
It messed up his face, and he nearly died! 😭 Thank goodness he survived, and his face looks fine now, but I think the accident really messed him up mentally, emotionally, and psychologically. 😥😔

The problem really is the men in this era (and its fixation on white men in particular)
the women aren't having issues in my opinion when it comes to utilizing their star power and building their brand b/c alot of them have successfully utilized fashion as part of their image, timmy is the only one who has zero shame (😭😭😭) but these ( (white)men just dont have the thing that really makes them stand out as like I gotta go to the movie theatre and watch them on the big screen.
I think we have a great crop of women who are currently dominating the industry or will very soon. Jenna ortega, zendaya, anya, flo, saoirse sydney , margot, tessa thompson , taylor russell etc and then add in the number of black women who are also so talented and just need the right movie to help them hit the mainstream and make it big.
I mean, you DO have a point Anon! It doesn't seem to be the women having any issues lol 🤣
But like you mentioned, the women also have the fashion side of things to get their names and stars bigger and having people talk about them as well.
With that said, I don't think we're being fair to the men... I mean, Timmy has already proven that he can be a box office draw imo, and he's definitely Hollywood's Male "Darling" and he has Directors wanting to work with him. Michael B. Jordan is also one who I think people would go to the theaters to watch, especially if the film is a good one. His films make MONEY! "Black Panther", The "Creed" franchise. He also not only starred in, but also directed "Creed 3", and wasn't it one of the highest-grossing sports film in history? 🤔
Tom as well (is Tom considered a "Millennial"? 🤔).... I'm not sure if he's considered a "Millennial" or just a geriatric Gen Z'er tbh lol 😅 (it seems nobody can agree lol), but if he does fall into the "Baby Millennial" category, then I'd say that Tom is also definitely a "Movie Star" and has many successful films under his belt.
Austin too is definitely going places. "Elvis" did really well in theaters. I'm not sure what his draw will be box-office-wise with a non-biopic film, but I can definitely see people already are interested in watching him onscreen... So, he's definitely one who's very promising to watch also.
Chris Evans had a very promising trajectory, especially with his super fame due to playing Captain America in the Marvel films, but it seems like his films outside of Marvel don't necessarily have people saying: "OMG I have to see the new Chris Evans movie!" But he's done some successful films outside of Marvel ("Knives Out"), so I won't discount him just yet lol. 😅
Robert Pattinson is a good actor, and people seem to like a lot of his films too. They may not always be blockbusters, but he's definitely a household name, thanks to the "Twilight" franchise, and "The Batman" as well.
Also, don't sleep on Daniel (Kaluuya), Barry or Paul (Mescal) either. They're definitely going places, and Daniel has already won a ton of awards, and has been in VERY good high-grossing and popular films himself ("Get Out", "Black Panther).
I think we're selling the men a little short Anon lol.... 😅
But yea, the times we're living in are NOT like the times of Leo and Brad and Tom Cruise in their primes. Our generation has a lot more stuff to contend with, and the look of fame is totally different I feel than it was back in the Hollywood "Golden Years" lol . Maybe that's just me? 🤷🏾‍♀️

I do think sometimes we overestimate how much an influence stars are in bringing in audiences and we ignore things like genre, the director, the movie trailer, red carpets, music, even the movie poster, the IP. Julia roberts didnt instantly become a draw, she was in a rom com a very popular genre, in the 80s and 90s and it took time for her to build her profile same with tom cruise. Julia roberts was americas sweetheart because of the movies she was in and the genre she dominated which was the rom com.
Star power is industry speak, people are complicated and there are million factors into why someone watches the things that they do and marketers know this, the thing is you want to attract those who are undecided or the regular movie goer who isnt focused on red carpets but just wants to go to the cinema thats the hard part, sometimes stars are not enough they can only take you so far. "Star power" discourse blinds us from looking at the bigger picture and putting all the pressure on actors when they are one part of larger discussion.
Tumblr media
Wow, this was so well-stated Anon!
I really do think that the genre of films you do, AND how BIG the films you're in does sometimes make a huge difference in how big your star meter gets, and how much star power you get. 😊
You're right, a lot of people seem to blame the actor, when in reality, sometimes the actor was just given a lead role in a film that was huge or a big success. Or, in the case of those who aren't considered "movie stars", sometimes it's that they weren't really ever given a lead role in a huge film.
Most of the actors that have been mentioned as "movie stars" have usually ALL had lead roles in huge films, OR, have been in huge successful and popular films that made the audiences take notice of them.
Sometimes the genre and/or the IP of a film really does make a huge difference!
Great example regarding Julia Robert's.
With that said however, there are some actors who just have that star quality just automatically, even when they star in small films. Like, they just stand out! You just know they're going places. It's just a feeling....
Actor James Dean for example.... wasn't he like only in about 3 or 4 films before his death? He really didn't do that many films before he died, but yet, he was already considered a "star", and people could see him really going places.

the reason is that millenials were still competing against the older generation in late 2000s early 2010s and they couldnt match what matt damon, leo ,dicaprio, denzel, brad pitt, tom crusie, will smith, will ferrell, eddie murphy , adam sandler, cate blanchet meryl etc whose star power never faded but actually grew stronger. Gen z or the gen z/ millenials have potential simply b/c the industry changed right when they were making it big and mastered social media and transformed themselves into brands. Arguably robert pattsion and josh hutcherson are the two stand outs in that era but even then they never could match jlaw and emma stone and I would throw in anne hathaway.
Tumblr media
You make some good points Anon.
I don't think it's totally hopeless for Millennial actors to have star power.... There are some promising Millennial actors out there who have the potential for star power.
I just think, like you said, most of them (especially the older ones) have had to compete with the older GOATS of old, and the industry has changed sooo much since the early days of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and even Leo.
Jmho 🤷🏾‍♀️
