Das Zirpen von Grillen ist für viele Menschen ein vertrautes Geräusch, insbesondere in warmen Sommernächten. Der Ton wird von männlichen Grillen erzeugt, die versuchen, weibliche Grillen zur Paarung anzulocken. Es ist ein ausgeprägter und beruhigender Klang, der Menschen beim Entspannen und Einschlafen helfen kann.

Grillen gehören zur Familie der Gryllidae, zu der über 900 Grillenarten gehören. Sie sind mit Heuschrecken und Katydiden verwandt und kommen auf der ganzen Welt vor. Grillen sind meist nachtaktive Insekten, das heißt, sie sind nachts aktiv und schlafen tagsüber.

Das Zirpen der Grillen entsteht durch das Aneinanderreiben ihrer Vorderflügel. Männliche Grillen haben eine spezielle Ader an ihren Flügeln, mit der sie den Ton erzeugen. Sie reiben ihre Flügel in einem Prozess namens Stridulation aneinander, der ein deutliches Zwitschern erzeugt. Der Ton wird mit hoher Frequenz erzeugt und kann von anderen Grillen und einigen Tieren gehört werden, ist für Menschen jedoch normalerweise nicht hörbar.
