A far too long post about this Hatsune Miku figure lol (under the cut)

I got this figure off Amazon from a second hand seller. I bought her with a gift card I got over the holidays so very technically I got her for free! :D Honestly, because of the price I wasn’t expecting much from the figure beyond “cool Hatsune Miku,” and the expectation that her pigtails might fall out (mentioned a lot in the reviews).

I only recently got into Vocaloid beyond the classic songs you’d hear all over the place on youtube in 2012, mostly because of Project Sekai, but also because I live with my brother, who has been obsessed with Vocaloid since he was 10, so they encouraged me to get fully invested.

In general though a lot of Miku figures are super cute, so I’ve always thought about buying one but couldn’t justify it. Until now that is!

The figure’s really cute overall! I love the pose and expression, they translated her design pretty well into figure (though the patterns on her skirt(?) under her dress aren’t there and are instead blocks of color, which is a small thing so it’s fine). The figure came in separate parts, which included her left arm, the bow on her dress, her tail, and her two pigtails.

As I said before, the reviews on the amazon page I got her from mentioned the pigtails would fall out. “Surely they mean when you move her,” I naively thought. But no the pigtails unfortunately are very prone to falling out, due to how shallow the supports are; there’s just not enough to hold them steadily in place, especially against gravity. Her bow also falls out A Lot, because of the same reason but a little more extreme.

My solution to that isn’t exactly great, as if you are in the habit of keeping figures in mint condition while on display, this damages that quit a bit, however I found that using very small balls of sticky tack to secure the removable pieces helps to stabilize them for display (I used small pieces of a kneaded eraser because that’s what I have laying around lol).

Final Thoughts

I’m really happy with her! I think she’s super cute, and I’m glad she’s my first miku figure! Despite the problems with some pieces falling out lol.

Do I recommend this figure?

Yes definitely! I think it’s super good for the price point and who doesn’t want a fun Miku figure?

Okay, tell us about your fave jellies specifically! I'd love to learn more!

If I'm going to be honest, most of my jellyfish knowledge sorta floats around aimlessly unless I'm looking for something specific, but I am all for telling a few of my favourite jellyfish facts! (For the record, my favourite jellyfish is the Upside-down jellyfish- specifically the Cassiopea andromeda :>)

Anyway I'm done with the beginning ramble now, I'll just get started :)

Scientists have only begun to tag jellyfish rather recently, beginning near the start of the century (if memory serves me right). Lots have been discovered through this, such as their daily migration patterns and whatnot

Though, what does interest me the most is the fact that scientists have discovered that the box jellyfish (likely the C. fleckeri, or the poster child of venemous jellyfish) "sleep" (or at least, lie motionless on the sea floor at nighttime). It's very funny, and a behaviour I believe to be shared with all box jellies of the Chironex genus (though... who knows? Maybe it might be typical box jellyfish behaviour)

What is proven is that Upside Down jellyfish do, in fact, sleep! This particular study also showed that melatonin works on Upside Down jellyfish as well... which is pretty neat I think.

If you'd like to preserve a jellyfish in liquid, a 5-10% formalin solution will do (or a 70% alcohol solution). The first reply in this thread is very helpful, actually! (though I doubt anyone here is interested in liquid preservation)

Another thread suggested using Magnesium Chloride to kill (oof) and fix jellyfish for pictures and then transfer(?) to a solution of alcohol or formalin.

The Compass Jellyfish is a sequential hermaphrodite, being born functionally male and then developing into a female upon maturity!

The Black Sea Nettle (C. achylos) and Purple Striped Sea Nettle (C. colorata) happen to be very close genetically :D! I suppose they are found roaming similar areas (around the mid to southern coast of California and Upper Mexico), so it makes sense.

They are also my favourite sea nettles and after realizing that the Monterey Bay Aquarium had wallpapers of them, they have swiftly replaced the subway bosses as my lockscreen :)

Jellyfish in the wild have slow metabolisms, so they can actually tolerate the numerous "dead zones" in the ocean for quite a while (dead zones being areas that algae and the like have completely sucked the oxygen out of).

One of these jellies is the Egg Yolk jelly, which often frequents these areas during the day (when competition is high)

The black sea nettle has "internal anchoring structures" that make it suited to swim through high currents without damage, though when I tried to look for that "internal anchoring structure" online I found nothing. Consequently, the author of my first jellyfish book, Lisa-Ann Gershwin, happened to be one of the biologists that described the species in 1996(?), so good for her :)

Ok, last bullet point before I run everyone ragged with jellyfish facts... Moon jellyfish are generally difficult to differentiate between species but here are a few distinguishing characteristics:

The A. labiata, sometimes referred to the Pacific Moon Jellyfish, may have 16 scallops (curves at the edge of their bell), while the A. aurita (or the posterchild of all moon jellies) tend to have 8. (This method may be imperfect, though. Or I might just be bad at counting).

The A. limbata has beautiful distinguishing brown bands at the edge of its bell, and generally resides in Arctic waters. Some of its polyps attached to pieces of trash were believed to be found at the coast of Northern Japan in the Spring and Summer of 2014, which is really interesting....

Anyway! That ramble ran for a while, ehehe... It's almost been an hour since I sat down and wrote all of this, hopefully you've learned something!

lando was frantically pacing your apartment when you walked in, eyes wild, as if he hadn’t slept, and hair an absolute disheveled state. his usually sun-kissed skin seemed to get even paler when he heard the door shut behind you, coming to a halt in your kitchen and staring at you as though he’d seen a ghost.

“lando?” you questioned, confused as to, a) why he was here so early, and b) why he looked like he was about to confess that he had killed your entire bloodline.

“baby, i’m so sorry.” your blood ran cold. what had he done? he closed the space between you, tentatively taking your hands.

“lando… what’s going on?” you tilted your head, starting to sweat in your oversized leather jacket. you’d just been out running errands, picking up bits for the dinner you were supposed to be sharing with the mclaren driver, much later in the day.

“i didn’t think anyone had seen us but then i had my assistant, the entire pr department and my mother phoning me, and then max called and said that him and pietra wanted to see if we were okay, before i could call anyone else back which confused the fuck outta me, so i finally checked twitter and there it was and i just got in the car and came here but god, i’m so sorry.” lando finally exhaled, looking like he was about to pass out, with creases so deep on his forehead that you thought they’d stay there permanently.

“okay, lando? sweetheart? yeah, okay i’m gonna need a bit more info.” you over enunciated each word, stressing that you were still in the absolute dark about whatever was on the verge of sending him into cardiac arrest.

“there’s photos. of us. kissing.” he finally said, quietly, and after a good ten seconds of staring at you in utter fear.

“fucking hell, i thought something terrible had happened. jesus christ, lando.” you exhaled, eyes wide. he stared at you like you’d grown a second head, stepping forward to mockingly rest his hand against your forehead as if he was checking your temperature.

“are you… are you… okay?” lando asked, eyebrow quirked. he was shocked at how calm you were.

you’d both agreed to keep your relationship private, and over the last five months, that had gone swimmingly well. but some low quality photos taken, as you waited for some friends outside a restaurant in the outskirts of london, had fucking launched the cat out of the bag.

“how bad are the pictures? are we naked or something?” you scoffed at him and now lando was truly confused.

“no, but- but i thought we were gonna keep this quiet.” he murmured.

“i know, baby, but okay, it’s out. is that really so bad? it was bound to happen eventually.” you reasoned, and lando finally saw your point.

“i just want to protect you, from all of the lights and the flashing cameras. love you too much to lose you to those vultures.” lando dipped his forehead against yours as he spoke, eyes locked on yours. you couldn’t help but smile at him, the loveliest man you could have wished for.

“oh, my sweet, sweet boy,” you crooned, pecking his lips. “you know i love to show off.” he laughed at that, a low rumbling in his chest.

you pulled away, stepping around him and walking further into your apartment, dropping all of your stuff down in your kitchen.

“anyways, i already saw the pictures. we look hot.” you ignored his incredulous ‘what?’, waving him off. “now, come here and help me make dinner.”

He blushes when he lies, he's a scarily good liar but if you ever want to catch him in a lie, point out the fact that his cheeks are red.

Whenever he has a drink with a straw, he holds the straw in-between his tooth gap.

Masky:

He has a NASTYYY side eye, and sometimes he'll scrunch up his nose while side eyeing someone just to make it sting even more

Contemplated getting a mullet once, he never went through with it though.

He coughs like someone's grandfather who smoked three packs of cigarettes a day for 40 years

If someone says a word that reminds him lf a song he likes, it'll automatically get stuck in his head and he'll hum it all day after that.

he isn't weak when it comes to stinky smells, but if it's stinky enough to make him gag he's extremely overdramatic.

he learned how to sew because of how much he ripped his jeans, shirts, etc.

Sleeps so hard sometimes people think he's dead, he'll just be laying there looking casket ready but everyone is too scared to check on him cause he gets super grumpy when woken up.

he always keeps a little money hidden somewhere, even if it's just a 5 dollar bill.

he's superstitious, if he sees you attempt to walk under a ladder he will physically drag you back and make you walk around it.

he has a pair of brass knuckles which he only saves for "special occasions" they're his favorite things ever, he even named them.

he only uses his phone to call, text, or search something up, and that's it.

he doesn't even have YouTube installed.

hey i have a question. do you kmow what’s up with the ichiban kuji jojo’s assemble (2021) josuke figure? the one from this:

it looks really nice in the promo pictures, but the one i own, and every single one ive seen anyone else own, looks absolutely terrible. the face is sculpted completely differently to the promo pics and looks super ugly. i don’t think it could be a bootleg because i’ve literally never seen someone own one that looks like the promo photos. do u know what happened with this thing? it’s super disappointing since theyre on the pricier side but the worst quality of any jojo fig, and i don’t want to buy anything else from this collection if if could turn out the same

The quality issue's probably because it's a kuji figure. They tend to be made with simpler molds and lower quality control since they're meant to be sold as lottery prizes and crane machine items. The upside of this is it keeps the prices down vs. the retail prices on scale figures, but stuff can go awry with some releases looking terrible.

(His Josuke's face looks like it's painted well but I can see how the sculpt could make it really weird since the nose is just oddly shaped).

I guess the best way to be safe is to wait until the kuji figure's been released and then look up a bunch of photos before you buy it, although sometimes that's less of an option with pre-orders. Sorry about your Josuke :(

The lost boys are all at least some level of queer and not just because David's actively thirsting after Michael for the entire movie, but those boys are really physical with each other. I mean- they constantly be touching or standing really close to one another. And as a gay man who's lived in several conservative areas, let me tell ya, straight men don't like to stand that close to each other or be touched. It wasn't until I was around other queers that it was normal for a man to casually touch a man's shoulder, or put their hand on their back, etc. And hell yeah you share drinks from the same bottle, or share cigs and joints. I'd say this pack of vampires are at least all queer to some varying degrees. I'm not saying Marko's a sub for David but damn that boy definitely takes orders from David without hesitation.

So I've compiled some evidence for you to enjoy of the vampires being touch-y with one another in chronological order lol. Enjoy!

And then there's this one. I actually almost missed this one, but if you look, either Dwayne or Paul has their hand on David's shoulder. Like there's no reason to? But he does it anyway:

This one is really just a bonus of Paul standing really freaking close to David. I mean personal space, right? David's shoulder is practically in Paul's chest.

Now this one I find really fascinating. This is right after David gives Michael the joint, and the reason I find it interesting is because probably... ten-ish seconds before this David puts his hand on Michael's shoulder and Michael shoves it off. But this time he let's David do it. David stares at Michael a lot:

I'm going to say Paul doesn't give a crap about personal space because here he is in Michael's face after he pats him on the back:

I think this is such a cute one. Marko put his arm around Dwayne and Dwayne then returned it. So adorable! I had to edit it a little bit because it was very dark:

This next one is a small bonus, but just know that currently David has his arm around Michael (and I'll show that in the image after):

And then when the camera moves, you can see that David's arm is around Michael's back (you can see his wrist sticking out from his jacket just a bit. As he moves to face Michael you can see his hand move to Michael's shoulder):

And y'all know that after Michael falls from the bridge he's caught by David.

I left out some smaller things such as Paul playfully shoving Marko when getting on his bike and the kicking during the bridge scene. But I rest my case. These boys don't mind physical touch between each other, and even actively seek it out. Which, with 4 men living and sleeping together and being very co dependent, it just screams queer all over the place. Even in the book it mentions that the cave is larger and has other tunnels, but yet they'd all rather sleep together 🥺 ALSO just gonna point out that when David turns people, he makes them drink his blood, but at the end of the movie Max just goes to bite Lucy? Unless that's a perk that only the head vampire has, seems a little sus that David wants everyone to swallow his fluids

I am still feeling a little surreal that I finished it. I had the idea of drawing Cas comforting Dean after a nightmare for so long --- last year when I first started posting Destiel fanart I was in no way capable of laying out my ideas so I settled on just one piece of Cas kissing tearing Dean (and not a satisfying piece at all lol). Can't believe after one year I managed to do so many panels in less than one week… Not really single-piece quality but still :D This is insane lol

Perhaps I should redraw the old piece someday :D

Sorry for the sudden style change lol I wanted to draw recognizable scenes from the show but then the first half looks like a terrible photo collage after poor color altering lol this is not what I wanted T^T then in the second half they basically become very --- manga? simplified? unrealistic lol.

would u mind saying ur opinion on brendon urie and whether u think he is awful/just annoying but not evil/overhated/underhated/not-hated-the-right-way etc. sorry i know most would b able to understand your stance from context clues but i am so autistic

I have mixed feelings on Brendon. I think Brendon is pretty talented, I might even say “very talented,” but I think he has problems playing well with others creatively. I think Brendon has some positive qualities too, like I genuinely really do admire him for his relationship with religion and how he handles that and his family seemingly so effortlessly, and he can be charismatic and is normally a great live performer. But I also think it seems like he enabled a lot of Zack's bullying, and sometimes even participated in it himself, and I feel like all of that stuff together crossed a line into "Not cool."

I don't think all of his "solo" music is terrible-- I quite liked Death of a Bachelor quite a bit and think he did a great job with that record. I also think some of the negative things about Brendon applied to other people in Panic at the Disco, but because there has been no one else in Panic at the Disco for so long people are mythologizing the lore in a way I feel is inaccurate. I also think Brendon tends to not think before he talks and has said/enabled some comments that are very offensive, ie "knee grows" or retweeting a photo of a fan mocking her weight. I find that behavior to be pretty unacceptable.

I’m sorry to say it’s going to be a little late. I got caught in a meeting yesterday that went way too long and I was absolutely exhausted when I got home and couldn’t finish it off.

I promise I won’t draw it out though, I know how excited you guys are for this one.

But I have a snippet!

Aelin unlocked her phone and opened the app just to see who this person might be. The first piece of information she was given was a name, Rowan Whitethorn. Not a bad start. She tapped through to his profile, he was a lawyer, lived in the city, his age was left blank—a little odd but apparently that was a subject some of the clients could get a bit touchy about. The final piece to the puzzle was his photo. Aelin touched the icon to make it bigger and—

“Oh.”

It was terrible quality. Like whoever this Rowan Whitethorn was had cropped his photo from a much smaller one. All she could distinguish was silver hair and his general facial features if she squinted. She grimaced and not at all pleased with her prospects. This looked likely to be some old guy wanting company. It was only the hollow feeling in her stomach that prompted her to open the chat.

He has a whole story laced into the canon/impled canon of monkie kid, mainly with Pigsy. might do a whole lore dump on here just for funsies some time. but for now, this is just him around the age 16-17, when he went to secondary school with Pigsy :]c !!

So, I haven't dabbled in any form of visual arts in awhile, and I'm feeling the need to scratch that itch in some way, which has led to me revisiting various projects from over the years and, look, I'm not winning any awards any time soon, but also, I feel that some of what I've made is pretty okay. Prepare to be whelmed.

This was my youngest brother's graduation card -- I think this was entirely in crayon minus the mortarboard sticker

Some cookies I made to celebrate "Cat Day", which was when I roadtripped to Austin with a friend so she could pick up the kittens she was adopting:

These are from my watercoloring phase (I swear, I painted things that weren't badgers, but this is what I have photos of right now):

My digital art phase (the spooky trees were a result of freehand work/me just playing around with various brushes in Procreate; the other two involved me attempting to follow Bob Ross instructions in Procreate. I still don't actually know the ins and outs of digital painting, and since I have all the necessary tools and it will require no additional space or purchases, this may be what I get back into for now):

My old office used to do a door decorating contest during the holidays, and I didn't win, but I strongly feel this deserved props at least (snowmen and snowy hills are felt, background is kraft paper, snowflakes are a mixture of regular printer paper and wax paper that I cut with my own hands) (technically, I cut all of this with my own hands) :

Sometimes, I fancy myself a photographer, but not terribly often:

And I swear I've made better use of acrylic paint than this, but it's the only photo I currently have of something I've painted (I know the pattern gets janky at some point, and I am extremely sorry about that. If it helps, I'm pretty sure completing this without redoing the entire thing probably counted as exposure therapy for my OCD):

Not pictured: that time I attempted using charcoal with little-to-no research, a variety of bullet journal spreads, the pom-pom wall hanging from my living room, the many, many magazine collages, and thousands of doodles similar in quality to this:

And, yeah, my handwriting is atrocious. Always has been, always will be, probably. Unless I decide that my next foray into visual arts will involve lettering of some kind. Then, maybe it'll be fair-to-middling.

Absolutely! It's a LONG ASS POST, so I put it under a cut.

So for the photo op me and my sister got in line and they were running super behind schedule but I think they were trying to ensure everyone got in and out close to their allotted time.

So me and my sis got in line, and we were ushered in. The first thing that hit was just how handsome he was, his smile lines and his eye crinkles were so sweet! And also noticed just how skinny he was??! Like I feel like he lost a lot of weight since KIN and even the born again set pics?

Then it was our turn and he fistbumped me and my sister, gave us both a side hug and was the SOFTEST HUMAN ALIVE. Like he made us feel so special in the 10 seconds of interaction and said "bless you for coming" as we walked out.

The autograph was a little different and I put it in bullet points this morning:

But I got to meet him and was one of the early ones in line

He was once again so sweet and soft spoken

I have a tough name to pronounce so he asked

“Am I saying it right?”

I said “yes, im sorry that it is tough to pronounce” and

he said “ don’t you dare apologize for your name it’s lovely”

Then I asked him if he was enjoying Toronto

And he said he loves the city but didn’t get to explore this time

Then he signed and told me to enjoy fan expo and I told him the same, and "thank you for doing what you do and hope you have an amazing day"

Finally the panel! I was in line a couple of hours before the event started because I knew how crowded it was going to get. I met some lovely people who were SUPER nice to me and we got to the beginning of the line for the panel.

Charlie and Vincent were HILARIOUS. Just so sweet and funny and kind.

Memorable Highlights:

He gave an anecdote about pulling an all nighter before his stardust audition

He wants to cosplay at a fan expo with his 6 year old daughter, and thinks Bluey may be a good idea

He made a joke about him and Vincent showering together

He thinks All Dressed Ruffles are "tremendous" and HATED ketchup flavored chips

WHEW that's all I can think of at the top of my head. I'm still processing it all and am just insanely happy.

I'll be posting my terrible quality videos of the fan panel on tumblr as well.
