Controversial opinion, but I prefer one album release over a trickle of 8-10 singles. Especially if those singles just appear on an album again later

#this even applies for situations like streaming services where I'm not buying each new release #that said I did just drop everything to listen to the new CHVRCHES single as soon as I knew it existed #and it was worth it #i think?#so many of their tracks sound similar #which is kind of a comfort #like you know exactly what you're going to get #but also #there's Clearest Blue and there's ZVVL and then there's all of their other tracks #not something that's really worth complaining about tbh #still love their music #even if their composition method is. not what i love #based on the song exploder episode #like why is the dude telling the lyricist what to do. how about u let her do her job #anyway #pam spam

when i read this post from @emotionallychargedtowel and they said this about the game jihyun plays with jaewon right at the end of episode 10:

“the show makes a strong case for normalizing expecting a lot from–and being willing to offer a lot to–one’s partner... In a very real sense, Ji Hyun is saying, “if you distance yourself from me, I’ll pursue you. If you pursue me, I won’t distance myself.””

i couldn’t help but think, humour, hope, that the universal queer song, one of my queer anthem, would work for this show. and by god, clearest blue by chvrches does.

“if ever i try to push away, you can just keep me, tell me, tell me, tell me you’ll meet me tell me, tell me you’ll keep me tell me, tell me you’ll meet me will you meet me more than halfway?”

bc this song is just so jaewon at the end of episode 9, thinking about jihyun, wanting to have him, but needing jihyun to ‘meet him more than halfway’. just like what was said above, we so often talk about boundaries and limits in relationships, dont give your whole self away, as if restraint is equated to self respect. but a relationship is exactly where you shouldnt feel bad for holding those expectations, or for wanting to offer more. jihyun says in that game “if you take two steps back, i will take three steps forward”; i will meet you more than halfway. i will not just meet you and wait for you to take that final step, to close that gap, i will not expect that of you when i can do that myself. and i love that neither jaewon’s distance nor jihyun’s pursuit feels vilified in the show. its understandable, we hate those that hurt their partners and push them away, but we equally shout at the screen when someone who’s been pushed away doesn’t just give in. we have that ‘move on, he’s not worth it, hes not worthy of it’ response. we flip between that and the ‘i can fix him’ mentality, but when its something like this situation with jaewon, jihyun is not a fool, he doesnt respect or value himself any less, for waiting, for being patient, but also being steadfast and determined in his feelings for jaewon. he gives more bc jaewon in that moment cannot meet him halfway, and so he takes those extra steps, continues to reach out and think of him and maintain open communication. he outright refutes jaewon’s attempts to distance, and i love that that is what ultimately brings them back together. bc what jaewon needs, as he says on the beach, “you said if i was having a hard time, i could reach out to you”, and is the poignant line from tms “if its hard for you, i’ll go to you”, is someone that he can expect more from. he has perpetually played the nice guy role, the never wanting to upset anyone, always mature, always there to support others role, and what he needs is the selfishness to not only think about his owns feelings like the therapist says, but the selfishness to expect more of those around him, and have someone he can depend on, someone that will go that extra step when getting there was hard enough.

i really really couldn’t recommend listening to this song and reading the lyrics enough bc there’s rawness and honesty and desperation in how simple and to the point they are, and i know they can’t do it bc heartstopper beat them to it but that final kiss could easily be played along to the climax of this song and it wouldve broken me all over again, so i’ll just end another favourite part of the lyrics that i think work perfectly;

“just another time that i go down, but you are keeping up, holding to a hope you’ll undermine, never to be reversed”

#my clearest blue by chvrches agenda strikes again #but god this just works so perfectly for jaewon in that moment #and speaks perfectly to what towel said about giving and needing more from a partner #it is not an weakness on either side #its just a sign that you are human #the eighth sense

Not to be hyperbolic, but I think the moment in Heartstopper episode three "Kiss" where Nick sees Tara and Darcy dancing and kissing at Harry's party is genuinely one of my favorite moments ever put to film. I am always a sucker for loud, bright, colorful party scenes in teen shows; I live for the aesthetic and sonic pleasures of flashing multi-colored lights and thumping EDM bass. But THIS scene... It hits different.

Is it a little corny? Oh, yes. But the whole show is a little corny, so it fits. And it works for the same reason the rest of the show does: while its sentimental sweetness is enough to cause cavities, it is so earnest and pure of heart that you just can't help but love it.

Three things I adore:

1) The lighting. The colorful strobe lights are aesthetically pleasing, but they aren't solely an aesthetic choice - they also serve an important narrative and emotional purpose. Rainbow lights - emphasis on the bisexual pinks and blues - shine on Nick as he watches Tara and Darcy dance, sees the joy that being together makes them feel, and realizes how much he wants to be with Charlie. Everything that felt confusing and overwhelming and impossible suddenly feels attainable and easy and right. His hesitance and apprehension momentarily gives way to confidence and resolve. All the fear and uncertainty surrounding sexuality dissolves into a sea of joy and love.

2) The song selection. CHVRCHES' "Clearest Blue". God. Heartstopper is backed by a consistently great soundtrack - I was officially won over by the show when Wolf Alice's anthemic "Don't Delete the Kisses" played at the end of episode 1 - but the music is especially crucial in this scene. This moment is a narrative linchpin - a turning point for Nick as a character as well as in Nick and Charlie's relationship - and it needs to be striking, evocative, and effective. "Clearest Blue" is perfect. It helps create a moment that radiates euphoric, infectious, transcendent joy.

3) The gaze. Two girls dance and kiss while their male classmate watches them from a distance. Gloriously, it's the purest, most wholesome moment in the history of the world; there is not a hint of voyeuristic energy. None from Nick, none from the camera. Tara and Darcy kiss with joyful abandon, Nick watches with joyful wonder. It's a revelation. A teenage boy - who does like girls, mind - reacts to the sight of two girls dancing, kissing, and being happy together not by objectifying, fetishizing, or sexualizing them, but instead by feeling happy, awestruck, and newly empowered. He feels inspired to go after the boy he likes, because he really, really wants to kiss and be happy with him, too.

This moment hits like a tidal wave and makes your heart swell. It's loud and vibrant. It's electrifying and emotional. It's uplifting and heartwarming. It's sentimental and romantic. It's full of joy and innocence. It could have come across as cloying, but it doesn't. It's one of the loveliest moments I've ever seen in a queer romance - or any romance, for that matter.

It's kind of perfect, and I kind of love it.

You know, rewatching for Queen Olivia! 5. last thing i googled: I checked what time my bus leaves tomorrow - I’m visiting a friend. 6. favourite musician: Oh, no, it’s mpossible to answer that... the list is way too long, don’t make me do that :( 7. song stuck in my head: It changes so often, but currently it’s Clearest Blue by Chvrches (thank you, Heartstopper). 8. other blogs: None at the moment. 9. do i get asks: No, unfortuantely, really seldom :( 10. blogs following: 330. 11. amount of sleep: Right now it’s between 7 and 9 hours, I think. 12. lucky number: Probably 8. 13. what i’m wearing: A blue sweatpants and a yellow sweatshirt. 14. dream job: It would be amazing to translate books. I’d love that job. 15. dream trip: I would looove to properly visit the United Kingdom. And by “properly,” I mean visiting all of it! I’d love to visit all of the bigger and smaller places. 16. favourite food: Pastaaa, hands down! 17. play any instruments: Harmonica, but just a little bit. I could play the flute and the piano (a tiny bit) when I was younger, but I've forgotten everything... :/ 18. languages: English, Polish, a bit of French, and a very tiny bit of Spanish. 19. favourite songs: Again, I am sooo bad at choosing my favourites... But, top three at the moment are What's It Gonna Be? by Shura, Don't Delete the Kisses by Wolf Alice, and Why Am I Like This? by Orla Gartland (yes, yes, yes, I know these are all the songs from Heartstopper soundtrack, but what can I say? The music choice for the show is a masterpiece!) 20. random fact: It's sort of a confession - I have never tried smoking a cigarette. Just the thought of it makes me nauseous. 21. describe yourself as aesthetic things: Starry night sky, calm ocean, rainy evening, a room filled with piles of books and a great number of plants.

Soundtrack for the Kitty Bilbo fic then? 🥺😍

Okay! Links included! I will be straight up for all these soundtracks, I don't have any lyricless ones. Instrumentals are for me in the background while I'm reading or something, I don't put them on fic playlists. So this is an 8 song playlist:

Character Intro Songs King and Lionheart by Of Monsters and Men - I MEAN. You knew this was going to be on the playlist, right? Do I need to explain why?

Human by Daughter - I knew, as soon as I started making the playlist for this WIP, this song was going to be on it. Bilbo will definitely have a period where he's like "okay, so I'm just going to be a cat forever" and worries about what that'll mean. (I guess all the humor in this story is gonna come from Thorin >.>)

Arms Tonite by Mother Mother - This is the most Thorin/Bagginshield song. I have it on this (one of the first songs because I imagine it playing as they're on Ravenhill) as well as my playlist for I'll Die to Care for You, because. Well. The lyrics.

Conflict Song Control by Halsey - You know, I would say the main conflict actually is prompted by Thranduil, but it brings up all of Thorin's bad feelings about himself, which I think this song sums up pretty well XD

Scene Songs Daylily by Movements - A later scene, but at some point, Thorin will be outside with kitty!Bilbo, and Bilbo will just feel thankful that they can be together and he can see Thorin in the sunlight, even if he is stuck by his side in cat form.

Oleander by Mother Mother - Look, Thorin goes through his own (somewhat brief because he has a new cat!) angsty period when he finds out Bilbo 'left' and feels pretty awful. This is the song for that scene.

Animal by Troye Sivan - I don't know what scene in particular this will be, but I imagine it playing in the background one of the times that kitty!Bilbo is on Thorin's bed while he's recovering. Thorin would be talking to the cat, and Bilbo would be so charmed and that is when he realizes how much he loves Thorin.

Clearest Blue by CHVRCHES - This is the big scene! Bilbo will eventually get turned back into a hobbit and they're gonna confess their feelings! I just think that this song has the perfect vibes for that scene and this also just feels really good for Bagginshield.
