The Quest for Buddhism (112)
Buddhist cosmology
Brahmaviharas – From the teachings preached by the Buddha to his son Rahula (Ref)
“O Rahula, deepen your meditation on loving-kindness. Because if you deepen your meditation on loving-kindness, any resentment, hatred will disappear.
O Rahula, deepen your meditation on compassion. Because if you deepen your meditation on compassion, all harmful intentions will disappear.
O Rahula, deepen your meditation on sympathetic joy. Because if you deepen your meditation on sympathetic joy, any dissatisfaction will disappear.
O Rahula, deepen your meditation of equanimity. Because if you deepen your meditation on equanimity, any anger will disappear.”

2024 reads / storygraph
The Saint of Bright Doors
a surreal Sri Lankan fantasy about colonialism, revolution, mixing fantasy with the modern world
follows a man raised by his mother to kill his father, a god-like cult leader
but as an adult he puts aside his life of violence and moves to the city for a quiet life
he becomes fascinated with ‘bright doors’ around the city that never open and have no other side, and joins a group studying them to find out more
and a support group for those with divine heritage that becomes increasingly revolutionary, until the task he was made for reemerges and his life upends
#the Saint of Bright Doors#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#this is kind of hard to explain I dont know if I did a very good job here lol#it is weird and full of so many interesting elements. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it but?? I really liked it mostly???#It starts pretty small scale focused on the MC & slowly unravels the wider worldbuilding and narrative elements in a really interesting way#The first chapter or two I assumed it was typical high fantasy but then it’s like. oh this is a modern city. with emails and stuff.#The pacing is a bit weird - it’s quite meandering and also pivots significantly in the second half. tbh I’m still ????? about the ending lm#but also I am happy to float through on vibes.#and there’s some elements (like the doors that become….not that relevant) that I want to know more about. (as an aside - I saw someone say#that it’s a very clear retelling about Buddha’s son? which idk enough about but probably could give a deeper context to a lot of it)#writing style is kinda detached from the MC but also there is a reason for this that makes sense with the twist near the end!#which is a kind of twist i LOVE. Maybe I wish it had been emphasised a bit more over the story though? unsure.#I thought his mother's story was interesting also - you think she's an terrible parent just there for background context at the start but#then when she tells her story it's like ohh there's more context here.#also I hesitate to just say ‘if you like the spear cuts-- you should read this’ because I think the elements that are similar are done in a#kinda different way and might disappoint you if you’re expecting it to be the same as spear….but regardless the sort of dreamy writing#rich world; narrative with fantasy but also modern day elements; some of the writing style; mlm MC (tho not a romance)#idk. it will definitely not work for everyone but I enjoyed it overall#also it is full of queerness#bisexual books

Buddhist Dragon Balls
I first became interested in Journey to the West thanks to the manga/anime Dragon Ball Z. The series is named after a set of seven glass-like orbs (fig. 1) that were created by the Namekian-turned-protector deity Kami for the benefit of mankind. When all seven are collected, they summon the dragon god Shenron, who grants a single wish. One common wish is to resurrect a beloved fighter who had previously been killed in battle.

The seven dragon balls.
But what would the Dragon Balls be like if they appeared in the Journey to the West universe? There are two possibilities. The first is the most obvious, the Cintāmaṇi (Sk: "wish-fulfilling jewel"; Ch: ruyi baozhu, 如意寶珠, lit: "as-you-will treasure jewel"). Also known as "dragon jewels" (longzhu, 龍珠), these luminous orbs are commonly held by Bodhisattvas in Buddhist art (fig. 2), thereby signifying their ability to grant any wish that a believer may have. They are also mentioned in Buddhist scripture. For instance, the Treatise of the Great Perfection of Wisdom (Sk: Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra; Ch: Da zhidu lun, 大智度論, c. 2nd-century) reveals that the Cintāmaṇi is a bodily relic found in the brains of dragon kings (longzhu chu longnao zhong, 龍珠出龍腦中) (Buswell & Lopez, 2014, p. 193). Therefore, we would be able to maintain the connection to dragons in Journey to the West.

In East Asia, the Cintāmaṇi is closely associated with our second possibility, the Śarīra (Sk: "body"; Ch: Sushe/zi, 舍利/子) (fig. 3). These pearl-like beads figure among the bodily relics left over from the historical Buddha's cremation. [1] Strong (2004) explains: "[They are the result] of a process of metamorphosis brought on not only by the fire of cremation but also by the perfections of the saint (in this case the Buddha) whose body they re-present" (p. 12).
They are said to come in different colors and sizes depending on the country and religious tradition (Strong, 2004, p. 11).
Tumblr media
Photo of Śarīra relics.
Journey to the West could have one or even both of these bodily relics. For example, the Cintāmaṇi would allow demon kings or lesser spirits to wish for powerful heavenly weapons, thereby helping them fight stronger opponents; or, the Śarīra could grant the devils more spiritual power, thereby allowing them to bypass centuries of spiritual cultivation.
But neither of these items could help evil beings achieve immortality. I've previously noted that Journey to the West was heavily influenced by the Buddho-Daoist philosophy of the Southern Quanzhen School Patriarch Zhang Boduan (張伯端, mid to late-980s-1082). He believed that in order to become a true transcendent (xian, 仙), one had to achieve both the Daoist elixir of immortality and Buddha-nature (Shao, 1997; 2006). The first extends your life, while the second frees you from the endless rounds of rebirth. While the aforementioned spiritual objects may grant them divine longevity, it won't make them unkillable. And if they are killed, they would still be subject to the wheel of reincarnation. It would be up to them to achieve the last step in this two-step process. But that would require these spirits to mend their evil ways and “return to the right path” (gui zheng, 歸正)—i.e. convert to Buddhism.
Note:
There are three main types of Buddha relics: 1) those of the body left over from his cremation (hair, teeth, nails, bones, and Śarīra beads); 2) those that he used (walking staff, alms bowl, robes, etc.); and 3) those that he taught (i.e. lessons from scripture) (Strong, 2004, p. 8).

The Quest for Buddhism (69)
Early Buddhism and the disciples
Ten Principal Disciples No. 9: Rahula - foremost in practicing the dharma meticulously and properly
Rahula (Ref1) was a biological son who was one of the 10 principal disciples (Ref) of the Buddha, was regarded as the first to have performed the righteous practice of esoteric Buddhism. He is also one of the 16 Arhats.
The story of Rahula is mostly in the Vinaya Pitaka (Skt, Pali; lit. 'Basket of Discipline') which is a Buddhist scripture, one of the three parts that make up the Tipiṭaka (lit. Three Baskets).
Raised by his mother Yashodhara (Ref2) and his grandfather King Shuddhodana (Ref3), the young Rahula followed the Buddha, when the Buddha returned to his home city of Kapilavastu, in spite of the hindrances of his mother and the king.
After Rāhula reached the Park of Nigrodha, where the Buddha was staying, the Buddha considered that the heritage of the throne would one day perish, and was tied up with suffering and stress: "I will give him the wealth I obtained under the tree of enlightenment thus making him the heir of an inheritance that does not perish."
Once Rāhula had become novice, the Buddha taught Rāhula regularly. His instructions were very age-specific, using vivid metaphors and simple explanations. Besides the Buddha, Sāriputra (Ref4) and Maugalyayana (Ref5) also helped to teach Rāhula. Rāhula often assisted Śāriputra on his rounds for alms in the morning, and sometimes on other travels. Every morning, Rāhula woke up and threw a handful of sand in the air, making the wish that he may be counselled by good teachers as much as those grains of sand.
Still in the same year as Rāhula's ordination, the Buddha taught his son the importance of telling the truth in a discourse known as “the Ambalatthika-Rāhulovāda Sutta: Instructions to Rahula at Mango Stone”. In this discourse, the Buddha taught and encouraged consistent self-reflection, to help let go of all evil actions that lead to harm to oneself and others, and to develop self-control and a moral life. He encouraged reflection before, during and after one's actions, and explained that lying makes the spiritual life void and empty, leading to many other evils.
King Shuddhodana, who was shocked by Rahula's ordination, pleaded with the Buddha not to ordain any more princes of the Shakya clan without their parents' permissions, which was accepted by the Buddha. Subsequently, it was established in Buddhism that parental permission was required for underage ordination.

End of the World and Non-Euclidean Geometry: Mathematics Note -5 (essay)
Tumblr media
The main character of the Journey to the West, Son Goku, was so proud of his power that he went on a rampage in the heavens. Buddha makes a bet whether he can go to the end of the world. He takes the bet, flies clouds, reaches the place where five pillars stand, writes "I'm here" on the pillars, urinates, and returns. However, when he came back, Buddha said, "What you think is the end of the world is nothing more than what is on the palm of your hand." Smelly urine is dripping. Buddha's palm fell over him, and Son Goku fell under the mountain.
Well, this anecdote is also interesting as a topic of "Euclidean geometry" and "non-Euclidean geometry" in mathematics. Euclid's ``Theory: Stoikeia'', a compilation of Greek mathematics, caused a great deal of controversy in later generations. There is only one."
A "postulate" is a truth that can be accepted as correct without proof, but this postulate of parallel lines is more complicated than other postulates. Is it?”, and there were many people who worked hard to prove it. However, the effort was not rewarded, and some people even doubted the parallel postulate. As a result, instead of denying Euclidean geometry, another system of geometry without contradiction was established. These are called "non-Euclidean geometries".
Make the distance between the inner point (which sets up a circle) and the circumference infinite.
Therefore, for humans inside this circle, the circumference is infinitely far away, and no matter how much they walk, they cannot escape from this world. Only the inside of this circle is the whole universe. But for those of us who are looking at this world from the outside, the circumference is at a finite distance within reach. It just shrinks as you get closer. It's an illusion that they look parallel. intersect at infinity.

A young Buddha story I always liked (you might have heard it). When the Buddha was a young prince he was sitting in the garden one day when suddenly out of the sky a swan came crashing down, blood spurting everywhere, an arrow firmly lodged in it’s neck. It flailed on the ground piteously. The Buddha had not yet Awakened, so he ran over and panicked, started calling to his servants to come help him.
From around the corner comes his infamous cousin Devadatta with a big smile on his face. He says ‘don’t take it away! That’s the best shot I’ve made yet. That’s my spoils’. The Buddha is horrified, Devadatta is proud. ‘The bird needs help’, the young Buddha said. ‘The bird is my trophy,’ says Devadatta. The advisors aren’t really sure what to do, and the two boys can’t agree. So they go to the court room where the king and the ministers are gathered, and the court decides to hear the case between the two boys as a kind of break.
Devadatta makes his argument clear: ‘I shot the bird. By doing so, I claimed it. This is how everything works, every stone in this palace and each place of land one owns.’
The Buddha, young and bashful, says ‘Everyone agrees that things that hate each other belong apart, and that those who love each other belong together. Devadatta showed violence to the bird, who will not leave my lap, so you have to understand it as hate; I cared for the bird, who will not leave my lap, so it is clearly love. Hence the bird is under my care.’
The council weighs the arguments after the boys have spoken, admiring Devadatta’s maturity and a little embarassed by the Buddha’s emotional plea. Just as they’re about to make their judgement in favor of Devadatta, the king gives a small cough, and the courtiers remember themself: The Buddha is in the right, the bird belongs to him. Devadatta is outraged, screams injustice, storms out of the room.
Telling this story later in life, the Buddha says ‘Do you know? Devadatta had the better argument, of course. I only won because I was the king’s son—-pure privilege. In a sense, it wasn’t right. But I did care for that bird, and a week later it flew away squawking and happy.’

For the sy transmigrating in his hospital gown au
I got you some lines sy might say while high:
"it's cold... I mean it's always cold in that place but could I at least get a warm blanket or something?"
"my wrist hurts... my arms always hurt, this is such bullshit!" *Gets teary eyed*
*staring at any of the peak lords* "oh my hair used to be very long too(a mullet that reached just past his shoulders)! Such a hassle it was with all I had going on... It would always get pulled (when readjust himself on a gaming chair or laying down) so I had to cut it."
*talking about a newly patched up stitch* " oh I hate how long it takes for these to heal, they're always so tender and sensitive but I know how to take care of them without any help now!" He says as he gives a very accomplished smile to mqf
"I hate how nauseous these drugs make me, I'm just thankful I don't have to deal with this often. But the pills afterwards suck not gonna lie."
"did you know I'm forced to take like, 20 different pills a day?! And depending on whether or not I take all of them or not I get either the bad nausea or the very awful and uncomfortable nausea? I just can't win!"
"if it wasn't for the fact that I couldn't put my family through the fact that their son committed suicide I would've killed myself ages ago, istg..." Said grumply
"STFU!!! One of their residents was supposed to check up on me like RN!... Yo, I'm in so much trouble if I somehow found a way out of my room..."
*in a sleepy voice* "this place smells nice, kinda like my grandma's garden...........she has a really big garden...*starts tearing up* I'm never gonna see that garden again huh...*
"Are you here to stab me again?" (for IV fluids).
"Eldest brother is busy all day because of the government investigation. I haven't seen him for so long..." (A mandatory government audit required to win some contract. But it sure sounds like he comes from a prominent political family that lost the favor of the emperor. This big brother is probably being tortured in prison.)
"When I get better, I want to eat Buddha Jumps Over the Wall again. Mom, you know it's my favorite-" (This dish is so complicated to make that it was basically an imperial family only dish.)
"Or even beef steak."
[More in #shen yuan interrupts a peak lord meeting by transmigrating into PIDW in his original body and in hospital clothing AU]
