What a strange–and good if not great–record this is. Full of acoustic guitar and cello and plenty of excellent electric bass playing, this is what Bruce presented as a follow up to Cream while Baker and Clapton did Blind Faith. So it’s marvelous as a contrarian statement even as it’s just pretty good as an album of songs.

One of my favorite Pitchfork reviews ever is this one; the reviewer is, if I can properly distill it, sincerely *offended by the existence* of Monastic Living, or at least tracks 2 - 9 of it, and I say this not because I dislike the EP, but because I actually dig it quite a bit. ML is skronky, kranky, freaky, and frooky. And even if this . . . experiment, I'll admit that . . . isn't your cup of tea, it is absolutely more goddamned sincere than fucking Metal Machine Music, plus it's much less abrasive. Suggesting otherwise as the Pitchfork review does is is just magnificent, flamboyant, silliness
